Is there good education and bad education? This is a question that has been asked for years now. Good education works towards the goal of preparing and empowering individuals to lead a productive life that definitely impacts the economic growth of the society and country they are a part of. Good education is meant to stimulate logical and critical thinking in individuals. Good education does not mean scoring high marks in your assessments. People usually perceive the notion that schooling and scoring good marks in examinations is education. Education is beyond all that. Schooling alone does not lead to learning. Getting a good education depends on a lot of factors, including the environment or society you are in, the social and economic background and the ability of the individual to understand, analyse and act according to the need of the hour.

It is a fact that quality education and skill development comes from strong education systems. Having trained and empathetic teachers is one of the prerequisites to availing good education. Education includes learning about different cultures, religions, communities, economic and social standards and grooming oneself to become a socially responsible individual. With the advancement of technology, teachers have been taken for granted because most children nowadays have their own mobile phones and internet access with which they can find answers to any questions, sometimes questions their parents, siblings, or teachers cannot explain. This is a huge drawback in the process of building a healthy society.

Being educated often makes you feel powerful. Why is that?

Imagine you did not know how to use a mobile phone, a laptop, a match stick or a bulb. What is the use of possessing something that you do not know how to use? In the beginning of time, it was found out that hitting two rocks together produces sparks that can start a fire. Every little thing you come across can teach you something or the other. The more you know, the more powerful you become.

Knowing how to drive a car would come in handy when you have to go somewhere with more people travelling with you. Knowing how to fix a pipe can help you when someone accidentally breaks off a pipe and water keeps flowing. Likewise, everything you learn will help you in one or the other way. Therefore, good education can be defined as the general and specific knowledge people gain by being taught or by experience.

Gathering a load of information is easily possible in the present age of the internet and technology. Being able to answer every question does not guarantee or prepare you for a life where experience and knowledge is accounted for.

The more you learn, the more you benefit from it. Even if you think that something that you are learning is not what you are interested in or what you think you need, do not worry because everything you come across will help you in some stage of life. An educated individual has a lot more to give to a society and a nation than a rich person. Being educated shapes the characters and social behaviours of individuals. It changes the way people think and act. The way you look at your fellow beings and treat them varies with every day in the process of learning.

The ultimate goal of education should be action and not just knowledge. In order to attain this goal, it is important to let all kinds of people understand the importance of education and the benefits of being educated in this constantly changing world.

What Is Education For?

What is education for? As it happens, people differ sharply on this question. It is what is known as an “essentially contested concept.” Like “democracy” and “justice,” “education” means different things to different people. Various factors can contribute to a person’s understanding of the purpose of education, including their background and circumstances. It is also inflected by how they view related issues such as ethnicity, gender, and social class. Still, not having an agreed-upon definition of education doesn’t mean we can’t discuss it or do anything about it.

We just need to be clear on terms. There are a few terms that are often confused or used interchangeably—“learning,” “education,” “training,” and “school”—but there are important differences between them. Learning is the process of acquiring new skills and understanding. Education is an organized system of learning. Training is a type of education that is focused on learning specific skills. A school is a community of learners: a group that comes together to learn with and from each other. It is vital that we differentiate these terms: children love to learn, they do it naturally; many have a hard time with education, and some have big problems with school.

There are many assumptions of compulsory education. One is that young people need to know, understand, and be able to do certain things that they most likely would not if they were left to their own devices. What these things are and how best to ensure students learn them are complicated and often controversial issues. Another assumption is that compulsory education is a preparation for what will come afterward, like getting a good job or going on to higher education.

So, what does it mean to be educated now? Well, I believe that education should expand our consciousness, capabilities, sensitivities, and cultural understanding. It should enlarge our worldview. As we all live in two worlds—the world within you that exists only because you do, and the world around you—the core purpose of education is to enable students to understand both worlds. In today’s climate, there is also a new and urgent challenge: to provide forms of education that engage young people with the global-economic issues of environmental well-being.

This core purpose of education can be broken down into four basic purposes.

Education should enable young people to engage with the world within them as well as the world around them. In Western cultures, there is a firm distinction between the two worlds, between thinking and feeling, objectivity and subjectivity. This distinction is misguided. There is a deep correlation between our experience of the world around us and how we feel. As we explored in the previous chapters, all individuals have unique strengths and weaknesses, outlooks and personalities. Students do not come in standard physical shapes, nor do their abilities and personalities. They all have their own aptitudes and dispositions and different ways of understanding things. Education is therefore deeply personal. It is about cultivating the minds and hearts of living people. Engaging them as individuals is at the heart of raising achievement.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights emphasizes that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights,” and that “Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.” Many of the deepest problems in current systems of education result from losing sight of this basic principle.

Schools should enable students to understand their own cultures and to respect the diversity of others. There are various definitions of culture, but in this context the most appropriate is “the values and forms of behavior that characterize different social groups.” To put it more bluntly, it is “the way we do things around here.” Education is one of the ways that communities pass on their values from one generation to the next. For some, education is a way of preserving a culture against outside influences. For others, it is a way of promoting cultural tolerance. As the world becomes more crowded and connected, it is becoming more complex culturally. Living respectfully with diversity is not just an ethical choice, it is a practical imperative.

There should be three cultural priorities for schools: to help students understand their own cultures, to understand other cultures, and to promote a sense of cultural tolerance and coexistence. The lives of all communities can be hugely enriched by celebrating their own cultures and the practices and traditions of other cultures.

Education should enable students to become economically responsible and independent. This is one of the reasons governments take such a keen interest in education: they know that an educated workforce is essential to creating economic prosperity. Leaders of the Industrial Revolution knew that education was critical to creating the types of workforce they required, too. But the world of work has changed so profoundly since then, and continues to do so at an ever-quickening pace. We know that many of the jobs of previous decades are disappearing and being rapidly replaced by contemporary counterparts. It is almost impossible to predict the direction of advancing technologies, and where they will take us.

How can schools prepare students to navigate this ever-changing economic landscape? They must connect students with their unique talents and interests, dissolve the division between academic and vocational programs, and foster practical partnerships between schools and the world of work, so that young people can experience working environments as part of their education, not simply when it is time for them to enter the labor market.

Education should enable young people to become active and compassionate citizens. We live in densely woven social systems. The benefits we derive from them depend on our working together to sustain them. The empowerment of individuals has to be balanced by practicing the values and responsibilities of collective life, and of democracy in particular. Our freedoms in democratic societies are not automatic. They come from centuries of struggle against tyranny and autocracy and those who foment sectarianism, hatred, and fear. Those struggles are far from over. As John Dewey observed, “Democracy has to be born anew every generation, and education is its midwife.”

For a democratic society to function, it depends upon the majority of its people to be active within the democratic process. In many democracies, this is increasingly not the case. Schools should engage students in becoming active, and proactive, democratic participants. An academic civics course will scratch the surface, but to nurture a deeply rooted respect for democracy, it is essential to give young people real-life democratic experiences long before they come of age to vote.

Eight Core Competencies

The conventional curriculum is based on a collection of separate subjects. These are prioritized according to beliefs around the limited understanding of intelligence we discussed in the previous chapter, as well as what is deemed to be important later in life. The idea of “subjects” suggests that each subject, whether mathematics, science, art, or language, stands completely separate from all the other subjects. This is problematic. Mathematics, for example, is not defined only by propositional knowledge; it is a combination of types of knowledge, including concepts, processes, and methods as well as propositional knowledge. This is also true of science, art, and languages, and of all other subjects. It is therefore much more useful to focus on the concept of disciplines rather than subjects.

Disciplines are fluid; they constantly merge and collaborate. In focusing on disciplines rather than subjects we can also explore the concept of interdisciplinary learning. This is a much more holistic approach that mirrors real life more closely—it is rare that activities outside of school are as clearly segregated as conventional curriculums suggest. A journalist writing an article, for example, must be able to call upon skills of conversation, deductive reasoning, literacy, and social sciences. A surgeon must understand the academic concept of the patient’s condition, as well as the practical application of the appropriate procedure. At least, we would certainly hope this is the case should we find ourselves being wheeled into surgery.

The concept of disciplines brings us to a better starting point when planning the curriculum, which is to ask what students should know and be able to do as a result of their education. The four purposes above suggest eight core competencies that, if properly integrated into education, will equip students who leave school to engage in the economic, cultural, social, and personal challenges they will inevitably face in their lives. These competencies are curiosity, creativity, criticism, communication, collaboration, compassion, composure, and citizenship. Rather than be triggered by age, they should be interwoven from the beginning of a student’s educational journey and nurtured throughout.

Why we must transform education now

Global warming. Accelerated digital revolution. Growing inequalities. Democratic backsliding. Loss of biodiversity. Devastating pandemics. And the list goes on. These are just some of the most pressing challenges that we are facing today in our interconnected world.

The diagnosis is clear: Our current global education system is failing to address these alarming challenges and provide quality learning for everyone throughout life. We know that education today is not fulfilling its promise to help us shape peaceful, just, and sustainable societies. These findings were detailed in UNESCO’s Futures of Education Report in November 2021 which called for a new social contract for education.

That is why it has never been more crucial to reimagine the way we learn, what we learn and how we learn. The turning point is now. It’s time to transform education. How do we make that happen?

Here’s what you need to know. 

Why do we need to transform education?

The current state of the world calls for a major transformation in education to repair past injustices and enhance our capacity to act together for a more sustainable and just future. We must ensure the right to lifelong learning by providing all learners - of all ages in all contexts - the knowledge and skills they need to realize their full potential and live with dignity. Education can no longer be limited to a single period of one’s lifetime. Everyone, starting with the most marginalized and disadvantaged in our societies, must be entitled to learning opportunities throughout life both for employment and personal agency. A new social contract for education must unite us around collective endeavours and provide the knowledge and innovation needed to shape a better world anchored in social, economic, and environmental justice.  

What are the key areas that need to be transformed?

  • Inclusive, equitable, safe and healthy schools

Education is in crisis. High rates of poverty, exclusion and gender inequality continue to hold millions back from learning. Moreover, COVID-19 further exposed the inequities in education access and quality, and violence, armed conflict, disasters and reversal of women’s rights have increased insecurity. Inclusive, transformative education must ensure that all learners have unhindered access to and participation in education, that they are safe and healthy, free from violence and discrimination, and are supported with comprehensive care services within school settings. Transforming education requires a significant increase in investment in quality education, a strong foundation in comprehensive early childhood development and education, and must be underpinned by strong political commitment, sound planning, and a robust evidence base.

  • Learning and skills for life, work and sustainable development

There is a crisis in foundational learning, of literacy and numeracy skills among young learners. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, learning poverty has increased by a third in low- and middle-income countries, with an estimated 70% of 10-year-olds unable to understand a simple written text. Children with disabilities are 42% less likely to have foundational reading and numeracy skills compared to their peers. More than 771 million people still lack basic literacy skills, two-thirds of whom are women. Transforming education means empowering learners with knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to be resilient, adaptable and prepared for the uncertain future while contributing to human and planetary well-being and sustainable development. To do so, there must be emphasis on foundational learning for basic literacy and numeracy; education for sustainable development, which encompasses environmental and climate change education; and skills for employment and entrepreneurship.

  • Teachers, teaching and the teaching profession

Teachers are essential for achieving learning outcomes, and for achieving SDG 4 and the transformation of education. But teachers and education personnel are confronted by four major challenges: Teacher shortages; lack of professional development opportunities; low status and working conditions; and lack of capacity to develop teacher leadership, autonomy and innovation. Accelerating progress toward SDG 4 and transforming education require that there is an adequate number of teachers to meet learners’ needs, and all education personnel are trained, motivated, and supported. This can only be possible when education is adequately funded, and policies recognize and support the teaching profession, to improve their status and working conditions.

  • Digital learning and transformation

The COVID-19 crisis drove unprecedented innovations in remote learning through harnessing digital technologies. At the same time, the digital divide excluded many from learning, with nearly one-third of school-age children (463 million) without access to distance learning. These inequities in access meant some groups, such as young women and girls, were left out of learning opportunities. Digital transformation requires harnessing technology as part of larger systemic efforts to transform education, making it more inclusive, equitable, effective, relevant, and sustainable. Investments and action in digital learning should be guided by the three core principles: Center the most marginalized; Free, high-quality digital education content; and Pedagogical innovation and change.

  • Financing of education

While global education spending has grown overall, it has been thwarted by high population growth, the surmounting costs of managing education during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the diversion of aid to other emergencies, leaving a massive global education financial gap amounting to US$ 148 billion annually. In this context, the first step toward transformation is to urge funders to redirect resources back to education to close the funding gap. Following that, countries must have significantly increased and sustainable financing for achieving SDG 4 and that these resources must be equitably and effectively allocated and monitored. Addressing the gaps in education financing requires policy actions in three key areas: Mobilizing more resources, especially domestic; increasing efficiency and equity of allocations and expenditures; and improving education financing data. Finally, determining which areas needs to be financed, and how, will be informed by recommendations from each of the other four action tracks .

What is the Transforming Education Summit?

UNESCO is hosting the Transforming Education Pre-Summit on 28-30 June 2022, a meeting of  over 140 Ministers of Education, as well as  policy and business leaders and youth activists, who are coming together to build a roadmap to transform education globally. This meeting is a precursor to the Transforming Education Summit to be held on 19 September 2022 at the UN General Assembly in New York. This high-level summit is convened by the UN Secretary General to radically change our approach to education systems. Focusing on 5 key areas of transformation, the meeting seeks to mobilize political ambition, action, solutions and solidarity to transform education: to take stock of efforts to recover pandemic-related learning losses; to reimagine education systems for the world of today and tomorrow; and to revitalize national and global efforts to achieve SDG-4.

Importance of residency applicant factors based on specialty and demographics: a national survey of program directors

With the transition away from traditional numerical grades/scores, residency applicant factors such as service, research, leadership, and extra-curricular activities may become more critical in the application process.

To assess the importance of residency application factors reported by program directors (PDs), stratified by director demographics and specialty.

A questionnaire was electronically distributed to 4241 residency PDs in 23 specialties during spring 2022 and included questions on PD demographics and 22 residency applicant factors, including demographics, academic history, research involvement, and extracurricular activities. Responses were measured using a Likert scale for importance. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square and Fisher exact test analysis were performed.

767 questionnaires were completed (19% response rate). Across all specialties, the factor considered most important was the interview (99.5%). When stratified by specialty, surgical PDs were more likely to characterize class rank, letters of recommendation, research, presenting scholarly work, and involvement in collegiate sports as extremely important/very important (all p  < 0.0001). In contrast, primary care PDs favored the proximity of the candidate’s hometown ( p  = 0.0002) and community service ( p  = 0.03). Mean importance of applicant factors also differed by PD age, gender, and ethnicity.

We have identified several residency application factors considered important by PDs, stratified by their specialty, demographics, and previous experiences. With the transition away from numerical grades/scores, medical students should be aware of the factors PDs consider important based on their chosen specialty. Our analysis may assist medical students in understanding the application and match process across various specialties.

Several changes in medical school performance assessments have occurred over the past several years. The United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1 transitioned from a numeric score to a pass/fail outcome on January 26, 2022 [ 1 ]. The score on this exam was previously considered one of the most important factors for choosing which residency applicants to interview, especially in applicants applying to competitive specialties [ 2 ]. Many medical school curriculums are graded as pass/fail during the preclinical years; thus, preclinical grades cannot be uniformly used to assess applicants. During the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous medical schools also changed their clinical year grading systems to pass/fail [ 3 ]. Given limited quantifiable data, these recent pass/fail reporting changes raise questions about how residency applicants should be objectively assessed.

The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Program Director Survey provides a wealth of information regarding factors that program directors value in selecting applicants to interview and ranking applicants in the Match. This survey is sent to residency program directors (PDs) of 23 specialties biennially, with the most recent report published in 2022 [ 4 ]. In 2021 and 2022, several items were deleted from the NRMP program director survey to allow space for more questions about holistic review and the virtual residency application experience during the pandemic, while decreasing respondents’ burden. Deleted items included questions about factors considered in decisions about which applicants to interview and rank and ratings of the importance of each factor. This survey compared the frequency with which programs interviewed and ranked specific applicant groups, including US MD Senior, US DO Senior, US MD Graduate, US DO Graduate, US IMG, and Non-US IMG. The survey also delved into the elements encompassed within the programs’ holistic review process and their significance. These factors include test scores, personal attributes, interests, interpersonal skills, ethics and professionalism, personal experiences, and geographic preferences.

While the NRMP survey results provide data regarding the mean importance of these holistic review factors, each of these factors is quite broad and does not characterize what specific attributes, interests, and experiences are of interest to program directors. In 2022, the NRMP stated that future iterations of the program director survey will re-introduce the questions about factors considered in decisions about which applicants to interview and rank. However, we felt it prudent to assess current opinions regarding which applicant factors are most important to program directors as programs continue to rely on a holistic review of applications due to decreasing objective data such as Step 1 scores.

Recent studies have surveyed program directors after the change to a pass/fail Step 1 score. One study found that approximately 40% of program directors replied that meaningful research participation would become more critical when choosing whom to offer interviews and that competitiveness of the specialty correlates with the reported importance of research [ 5 ]. Another study found that compared to non-procedural specialties, PDs of procedural specialties stated that they would place more emphasis on USMLE examinations such as Step 2 after transitioning to a pass/fail Step 1 [ 6 ]. While these studies, along with the NRMP data, provide substantial information regarding applicant factors that program directors emphasize when choosing whom to interview, the objective of our study was to analyze additional factors that may be emphasized in a holistic approach to applicant evaluation, such as athletic experience, military experience, medical scribe experience, and previous career prior to medicine. We evaluated the influence of athletic history on residency ranking given reported findings from other studies suggesting that prior participation in athletics may predict success in medical school and residency [ 7 , 8 , 9 ]. Medical scribe experience has also been postulated to be associated with academic success in medical school [ 10 ]. Military experience is associated with an increased likelihood of selecting a candidate for medical school interviews [ 11 ]. Secondarily, we assessed the importance of residency application factors stratified by PD demographics and specialty.

Following Institutional Review Board approval at Penn State College of Medicine, a questionnaire was electronically distributed to 4241 residency PDs within 23 specialties during Spring 2022. PD contact information was collected for every specialty through the FREIDA (Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database Access) website. All PDs provided informed consent when they agreed to participate in the survey. The survey included seven questions on PD demographics and a list of 22 residency applicant factors with an associated Likert scale rating system where program directors would rank the importance of each factor, as shown in Appendix 1. This survey was developed by the authors, with no collection of validity evidence. Three reminder emails were sent at one-week intervals. Responses were stratified by specialty [surgical (general surgery, neurological surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopaedic surgery, urology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, and vascular surgery), primary care (family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, medicine-pediatrics), all other (anesthesiology, child neurology, dermatology, diagnostic radiology/nuclear medicine, emergency medicine, interventional radiology, neurology, pathology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiation oncology, and psychiatry)] and demographics of the PD (age, sex, ethnicity, previous extra-curricular experiences). Extremes on each end of the Likert scale were combined for analyses as the differences between “not at all important” and “slightly important” are unlikely to affect decision-making processes significantly. The same applies to the difference between “very important” and “extremely important.”

Percentages and 95% Confidence Intervals were calculated for categorical variables. Differences between groups for categorical variables were characterized using contingency table analysis; significance levels were determined by Pearson’s chi-square statistic and Fisher’s Exact Test. P-values less than 0.05 were considered significant. The statistical analysis was performed using SAS software, version 9.4.

Analysis was performed on 767 completed questionnaires (19% usable response rate). Most respondents were male (55.7%) and Caucasian (78.6%). 38.0% of respondents were between ages 41 and 50. (Table  1 ). Specialties of respondents included 189 surgical (25%), 253 primary care (33%), and 323 other (42%) (Fig.  1 ). The survey template is shown in Appendix 1. Across all specialties, the percentage of respondents who characterized the following factors as extremely important/very important were: interview (99.5%), passing USMLE examinations (88.2%), core clerkship grades (79.1%), demonstrating leadership (70%), letters of recommendation (69.4%), personal statement (64.2%), dean’s letter (49.4%), community service (40%), class rank (29.8%), specialty-specific research (19.3%), close proximity of candidate’s hometown (15.7%), research publications (15.1%), presenting their research at a scientific assembly (10.4%), ethnicity of candidate (9%), non-specialty-specific research (7.2%), previous involvement in collegiate sports (6.9%), previous career prior to medicine (5.5%), previous military experience (4.8%), previous involvement in global health (4.2%), sex of candidate (1.9%), previous involvement as a scribe (1.6%), and age of the applicant (1.4%) (Table  2 ). P-values less than 0.05 are bolded in Tables 2, 3, and 4 to distinguish significant findings.

When stratified by specialty, surgical PDs were more likely to characterize the following factors as extremely important/very important: class rank ( p  < 0.0001), letters of recommendation ( p  < 0.0001), specialty-specific research ( p  < 0.0001), non-specialty-specific research ( p  < 0.0001), presenting their research at a scientific assembly ( p  < 0.0001), and previous involvement in collegiate sports ( p  < 0.0001). Primary care PDs were more likely to characterize the following factors as extremely important/very important: close proximity to the candidate’s hometown ( p  = 0.0002) and community service ( p  = 0.03) (Table  2 ). Data regarding the importance of residency applicant factors stratified by each specialty grouped within “all others” is displayed in the Supplemental File without p-values due to small sample sizes.

When stratified by demographics, PDs  ≤  50 years old were more likely than PDs ≥ 50 years old to characterize ethnicity ( p  = 0.04) and letters of recommendation ( p  = 0.03) as extremely important/very important. Male PDs were more likely to characterize class rank ( p  = 0.0007) as extremely important/very important. In contrast, female PDs were more likely to characterize ethnicity ( p  = 0.008) and community service ( p  = 0.005) as extremely important/very important. Non-Caucasian PDs were more likely to characterize proximity of hometown ( p  = 0.007), dean’s letter ( p  = 0.0003), letters of recommendation ( p  = 0.0003), involvement in global health ( p  = 0.001), and specialty-specific research ( p  = 0.0006) as extremely important/very important. PDs with previous collegiate sports experience were more likely to characterize leadership ( p  = 0.004) and previous involvement in collegiate athletics ( p  = 0.003) as extremely important/very important compared with PDs without athletics experience. PDs with prior global health experience were more likely to characterize previous involvement in global health ( p  = 0.009) and community service involvement ( p  = 0.002) as extremely important/very important compared to PDs without global health experience (Tables  3 and 4 ).

This survey analysis discovered numerous specific residency application factors considered important by PDs, stratified by their specialty, demographics, and previous experience.

Although several survey questions were similar to questions from the 2022 NRMP Program Director survey, our survey explores several applicant factors and their mean importance ratings that were asked in the 2020 NRMP Program Director Survey but not included in the 2022 NRMP Program Director Survey after Step 1 transitioned to pass/fail scoring. First, our survey uniquely stratifies responses by respondent demographics, allowing us to investigate how program director characteristics influence residency applicant ranking. Second, our survey uniquely expands on several residency applicant factors and supplements the 2022 NRMP survey as these aforementioned factors were removed to decrease respondent burden and focus on virtual aspects of residency applications during the pandemic, such as shifting to virtual recruitment and interviewing. Third, our survey focused on the importance of specific applicant experiences in residency ranking, including military experience, involvement in collegiate sports, experience as a scribe, and involvement in global health. Finally, our survey expanded on the importance of applicant demographics in residency ranking including age of candidate, sex of candidate, ethnicity of candidate, and proximity of candidate’s hometown to your program.

Several factors from the 2020 NRMP Program Director Survey overlapped with factors included in our survey. Across all specialties, factors in the NRMP survey were assessed for their importance in ranking applicants. Overlapping factors from the 2020 survey included several components of the interview, such as interpersonal skills (percent citing factor, average rating on Likert Scale with 1 being not at all important, 5 being very important) (95%, 4.8), interactions with faculty (89%, 4.8), and interactions with housestaff (89%, 4.8), letters of recommendation (70%, 4.1), leadership qualities (60%, 4.3), Dean’s Letter (58%, 4.0), personal statement (54%, 3.8), other life experience (47%, 4.0), any failed attempt in USMLE (46%, 4.4), grades in required clerkships (42%, 4.0), volunteer/extracurricular experiences (35%, 3.9) and demonstrated involvement and interest in research (28%, 3.8) [ 2 ]. Our results revealed similar emphasis on the importance of the interview, letters of recommendation, leadership qualities, Dean’ Letter, and the personal statement. Notably, in our survey conducted after the transition of Step1 scoring to pass/fail, 88.2% of respondents characterized passing USMLE examinations as extremely important/very important compared to 46% of respondents from the 2020 NRMP Program Director survey who cited any failed attempt in USMLE as an important factor in ranking applicants with an average rating of 4.4 on a Likert Scale of 1–5. This suggests that the importance of passing Step 1 on the first attempt has increased in importance since the transition to pass/fail scoring.

Our results also complement the 2022 NRMP Program Director survey. Program directors cited the following broad categories as important in holistic review of applicants: applicant personal attributes (88%, 4.4) (percent citing factor, average rating on Likert Scale with 1 being not at all important, 5 being very important), applicant interests (85%, 4.1), applicant interpersonal skills, ethics, and professionalism (81%, 4.6), and applicant personal experiences (81%, 3.9) [ 4 ].

Understanding our survey results may allow medical students to be better equipped in their decision-making regarding prospective residency programs in the medical specialty of their choice, knowing both the program director’s demographics and the subspecialty to which they are applying.

The decision to make the USMLE Step 1 exam pass/fail will have implications for both medical students and residency programs during the application process [ 6 ]. With this transition, in addition to many schools adopting the pass/fail curriculum for the didactic and clerkship years, students may find it harder to determine their competitiveness in a given specialty when relying solely on subjective feedback [ 12 , 13 ]. In addition, without a 3-digit-score cutoff or student decision-making not to apply to specific programs due to a particular 3-digit score, the increasing number of applications each program receives will directly conflict with the holistic application screening because of the burden placed on educators to review many more applications. This may lead to using other objective measures, such as the USMLE Step 2, to become the screening tool of choice [ 14 ].

Given the limited amount of objective data, such as USMLE test scores on residency applications, it is essential for students to understand a residency program director’s perspective in the residency application process due to this consequential change. Unsurprisingly, program directors across all specialties emphasized application components, including interviews, passing USMLE examinations, core clerkship grades, demonstrating leadership, and letters of recommendation.

Our results indicate that PDs for surgical specialties will emphasize class rank, letters of recommendation, research, and previous involvement in collegiate sports. This is consistent with other studies analyzing factors that have an implication in the residency rank process [ 6 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. Thus, prospective candidates may glean insight into trends in applicants at specific programs by understanding the demographics of the program director of that residency program. The differences in applicant preference based on the demographics of PDs, including their age, sex, ethnicity, and athletic history, suggest implicit biases may influence the decision-making process for residency applicants. However, we feel that these data should not be used to guide students towards or away from certain programs based solely on PD demographics, but rather students should be aware that both implicit/explicit bias may affect applicant ranking during the residency application process. Additional studies are warranted to elucidate this potential relationship further.

There were several limitations to this study. First, we obtained program directors’ emails via FREIDA and found that many emails for program directors were not current, as we received undeliverable emails and responses that some PDs had left their positions. Another limitation is that our survey focused on USMLE scores rather than Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) scores, which osteopathic medical schools use. Future studies may include more emphasis on the role that COMLEX scores will play in residency applicant ranking.

There are several additional survey questions that we did not include but would supplement the findings of this study. For example, collecting demographic information about the size and rank/competitive nature of programs would help applicants better understand how program size and reputation affect the perceived importance of applicant factors. Our survey asked about the importance of factors on a Likert scale of 1–5. However, future iterations of surveys could include assessing if the presence or absence of factors, such as failure of a Step 1 exam, are critical in ranking applicants (i.e., a program may not rank an applicant with any USMLE failures). Another limitation is the omission of a free response text box for PDs to include additional comments of important aspects of candidate selection that were not included in our survey. We suggest a free response section be included in future PD surveys.

Our response rate of 19% is comparable to the 18% response rate for the 2020 NRMP Program Director survey, but lower than the 33.1% response rate for the 2022 NRMP Program Director survey. Although the data and generalizability of the results may be limited by the low response rate and sampling bias of those who choose to participate in the survey, we hope that our analysis of the importance of residency application factors assists medical students in understanding the application and match process across various specialties. Furthermore, we hope our data provides insight into possible implicit biases across specialties and how that may be implicated in the match process. Future research should involve determining whether medical students who excel or participate in these identified factors lead to success during the application and match process.

Adult Education is a practice in which the adults of a community are engaged in learning activities to develop new skills, knowledge or even personality. It is a platform where adults could use years of experience and knowledge to learn new skills for a better future. Adult education might also include classes for those adults who never had a chance to go to school but are eager to learn for dignity and growth.

Adult Education also includes certifications for the acquired skills; opening better job prospects and providing a chance for social and financial development of an individual. Adult Education has no restrictions of gender or age and men women as young as in their 20s and as old as in their 60s have enrolled for adult education; for the absolute pleasure of learning and progress.

How Literate are our Adults?

Today, globally more than 207 Million students are enrolled in graduation programs in various disciplines, but on the flip side we still have 750 Million illiterate adults who never had access to a classroom . Women on the other hand constitute to 68% of the total illiterate adults.

One in every five adults (20%) has never been to a school and is unable to read or write. Asia pacific (22%), North Africa (41%) and sub- Saharan Africa (41%) are still reeling under adult illiteracy. Thirty countries have adult literacy rate below 70%, out of which 22 are in Sub Saharan Africa.

With the efforts of respective governments and other non government organizations across the world, more people are enrolling themselves for formal or non formal education; still much is needed to be done.

Reasons Why Education is so important for Adult

Types of Adult Education and Their Advantages

Adult Education can basically be constituted into three types- formal, non formal and informal education. Below we will go through the three types of Adult Education in detail.

1) Formal Adult Education

Formal Adult Education is provided in a classroom type environment, under the guidance and supervision of trained professionals. Schools and colleges are some examples of Formal Education, but Formal Adult Education typically refers to the enrollment of experienced adults into various certification or learning for career growth. It refers to a program which provides formal credentials to adults who are already gainfully employed or never had formal education, but are willing to be employed. It may include a diploma or a certificate program, depending on the choice of the adult.

Advantage of Formal Adult Education

Formal Education provides an edge to the adults who are already employed in various sectors, or those who never attended school, and seek formal employment. A professional degree, diploma or certificate is awarded based on the credits to make the adult employable or to improve his professional skills.

2) Non Formal Adult Education

Non Formal Adult Education is an education provided at the workplace or at some community centre but not in a classroom. Non formal education doesn’t have a set curriculum, but it is conducted under the supervision of a trained professionals. Though, it doesn’t allot a formal degree or diploma, it is very useful in developing specific skills and increasing the productivity of a person. A desire to learn is the driving force behind Non formal adult education. Some of the examples of Non Formal Adult Education are- voluntarily teaching the women of a community to stitching, producing bags, making pickles, producing honey, farming or any such sustainable activity. They main focus of a non formal education is development of skills and capabilities.

Advantages of Non Formal Education

Individuals, who have never been to school and lack the skills or qualities to be regularly employed, are the main beneficiaries of this type of education. The adults undergo specific training courses like in trade, crafts, agriculture, computers etc, to improve their skills which they can use to gain employment or start a small business of their own.

3) Informal Adult Education

Informal Education for Adults also lack any curriculum or certification as in Non Formal Education and includes the knowledge that is gained through observation and experience without classrooms or books. It includes manners, behavior, moral etiquettes, judging good or bad, traditions, culture etc. An educated person teaching basic calculation, reading, writing to his illiterate peers; is an example of Informal Adult Education. Informal Adult Education is conducted through meetings, community get together and is usually informative in nature. The topics of Informal Adult Education may range from culture, language, day to day life, health and hygiene to knowing the fundamental rights.

Advantages of Informal Adult Education

Informal Adult Education is aimed at raising general awareness and personality development. It makes people aware of the customs and rituals, other communities, methods to live a healthy and hygienic life, health facilities in a village or community, basic amenities and rights of citizens. Informal Adult Education may include numerous other issues of social or political concern.

Illiterate Adult Education

An illiterate adult is an individual in the age group of 15 to 65, who is unable to read or write, in any language. Illiterate Adult Education refers to the education which is provided to the adults who have crossed the age of Formal Education (15-35 Years), but still have the desire to learn. It includes basic learning skills like reading, writing, languages, vocational courses, skill development etc. Though, an illiterate adult can any time in his life go for a formal education through various correspondence courses offered by various universities, but the Illiterate Adult Education constitutes mainly non formal and informal education.

The Illiterate Adult Education may lack any formal certification but is aimed at developing individual skills which can be used as means of livelihood as well as raising social status and carryout every day transactions.

How Many Illiterate Adults Are There In The World?

There are 781 Million illiterate adults in the world out of which 75% are in Sub Saharan Africa, south Asia and West Asia alone. Women constitute a staggering two third of the world’s total illiterate adult population.

India has the largest global population of Illiterate Adults; at 287 Millions, India constitutes 37% of the world’s illiterate adult population. Though, the literacy rate in India has increased tremendously in the past two decades; still it’s lagging behind as the increase is not proportional with population growth.

How to Implement Adult Education/Ways to Implement Adult Education

1) Reaching Out To Poor

Adult illiteracy is prevalent mostly in the lower strata of the society. Poverty is the prime factor responsible for adult illiteracy. Families living in poverty are most likely to have uneducated adults. There is need for the governments to reach out to people living in poverty and make arrangements for educating them and bringing them to mainstream.

2) Promotion through encouragement

Respective governments in collaboration with Non Government Organization should make plans for the promotion of education in elders. Events can be organized at the places of public gathering- post offices, community halls, and schools to educate people about the benefits of adult education and the changes which it could bring to their lives.

3) Budgetary allocation

Governments must allocate or increase the budget allocated for adult education. More budget means better infrastructure supported by trained staff and more promotional activities. Adults undergoing vocational training courses should be provided loans to set up their own business.

4) Displaying Social Responsibility

The educated of the society- retired officials, professionals, teachers etc can come forward to organize free teaching classes for the illiterate adults. General places of public gathering like – post offices, community centers, schools can be chosen as the place for such activities. A flexible time may be chosen which suits to the people from different backgrounds- working, farmers, laborers, housewives etc.

5) Students teaching family Members

Today more families are getting conscious about educating their children. They have realized the importance of education and don’t want their children to lack behind with children of other parts of the world. Such school going children can take up the responsibility of teaching their adults. A learning child could be the best teacher for his/her parents or other relatives; making learning a fun activity.

6) Vocational training courses

Attractive vocational training courses should be offered to lure in the adults who never had the opportunity of going to school or who lack the skills to be employable. Individuals should be provided training in their respective area of choice- business, crafts apart from developing other skills to increase individual productivity and employability.

7) Public Private Partnership

Governments must work in collaboration with public sector entities; latter working as sponsor for programs on adult education. The main purpose for such partnership is to develop infrastructure for adult education- setting up skill development institutes in villages, setting new vocational training institutes, providing infrastructure for formal, non formal or informal education to adults.

8) Open Universities

Open Universities provide an opportunity of Formal Education to illiterate adults as well as further education to adults who want to improve in their respective careers. There are nearly 500 Open Universities functioning across the world, providing flexibility of courses and time and charging nominal fee. There is no boundation to attend regular classes and so they a are much popular among working professionals and adults engaged on other sectors.

Continuing/Further Education for Adults

Continuing Education is known as Further Education in United Kingdom and Ireland. Continuing Education is different from Higher Education and the both should not be confused with each other. While Higher Education refers moving traditionally from lower level to higher level of educations; continuing Education is mainly learning and skill development activity or a certificate program undertaken by employed adults. Continuing Education especially caters to the adults who are beyond the traditional age of college or universities. It includes activities like non certificate training, skill development and personality development programs etc.

Advantages of Continuing/Further Education

Continuing or Further Education provides growth opportunities to working professionals in their respective fields by acquiring skills and certificates. It also provides a chance to pursue courses of personal interests. Further education increases the employability quotient of an employee and improves his social status as well. Online Continuing Education provides an opportunity to working professional who don’t have time to attend regular college.

Importance of Adult Education in National Development

Adult Education is very much important for the development of a Nation as it could seriously improve the productivity and social structure of a nation. It provides opportunities of personal growth, employment, socialization resulting in the nation’s economical growth. Adult Education also leads to high primary enrollments, as educated parents are more inclined to make their children educated.

An educated and skilled adult will be gainfully employed in an organization or is involved in business activities; ultimately contributing to the nation’s economy.

Adult Education also raises the nation’s health and hygiene level and results in higher standards of living; abolishing poverty and misery.

Challenges Faced in Adult Education

Adults have many obligations and responsibilities, making it difficult for them to take out time for educational activities. Some may have responsibility towards family and some may be employed in different sectors. Women who are engaged in everyday household chores may find it difficult to attend education programs.

Lack of proper transport in the area can also act as a hindrance to Adult Education. Apart from that, lack of learning desire, lack of interest, lack of information and absence of required infrastructure and skilled manpower are some of the impediments to adult education.

Some adults may just be shy to join any educational program, because of their age or for the fear of family and friends.

Getting at the root of what is stopping them and finding out the ways to removing their barriers through counseling and other methods will sure make a positive change in their life.

  • Increases the employability of an adult.
  • Provides a lost opportunity to study and obtain a certificate.
  • Learning new skills that could be used as means of livelihood.
  • Improves general awareness of adults.
  • Make the adults more confident and communicative.
  • Improves the social fabric of the society.
  • Healthy and hygienic living conditions.
  • Eradicates poverty by raising employability.
  • Gives employees a chance to further progress in their respective fields.
  • Gives the women a chance to progress.
  • Provides higher salary and career options.

Barriers to Adult Education

  • Feeling out of place generally because of the age difference.
  • Shortage of time as one has to balance between learning and work.
  • Fear of uncertainty, which is absent in regular young students.
  • It takes time to adjust to your schedules of studies or learning.
  • Sometimes might lack the formal student teacher like interaction; especially in distance learning.

Education For Adults is no less important for adults than it is for children. Children might be the future of a nation, but its present rests in the hands of the youths and the adults of today. Only when the adults are educated, they will be able to safeguard their families, educate their children; prosper and grow adding to the nation’s growth and development. Our goals of sustainable development by 2030 cannot be met if we compromise on the education of our children as well as on the education of adults.
