Grahanam review: A brave attempt at a thriller which ultimately becomes unnecessarily convoluted

What is it about:

Grahanam at its core is a thriller that focuses on newlyweds settled in Singapore. The wife begins to have unexplained psychotic episodes and the husband embarks on a mission to solve the mystery. The narrative hints at a metaphysical thriller revolving around the idea of the ‘blood-moon’ and grahanam meaning eclipse and how it affects the psyche of a human being. However, the movie attempts to include a number of themes and subplots. Grahanam also marks the feature film debut for director and writer Anand Paga, his wife Devika Sivan as the female lead and Gibu George as the male lead.

What’s hot:

A lot of credit has to be given for this project as it was made from scratch with an inexperienced cast and crew. The supporting characters Chinchu and Sooraj added humour in an otherwise serious script. They were also the best performances in the film. The cinematography is commendable considering the relative lack of funds for the project. The framing of some of the shots for tense situations were excellently done. Given the current circumstances with regards to the global pandemic, which has indefinitely delayed relatively low-budget projects, the producers of this film deserve immense praise for finding a platform for its release.

What’s not:

The film tries to be too many things at once and ultimately fails at all of them. The opening 20 minutes of the film resembled the often pretentious wedding photo-ops in Kerala, with montages of the newlyweds containing songs every five minutes. When the script does eventually present intrigue leaning into sci-fi with the research about the ‘blood-moon’, it pulls the handbrake and does a 180 degree turn and subverts the audience into believing that the film is actually a psychological-thriller. This does not last long either, yet again without warning it becomes a political-thriller. It continues to shift and change until the very final scene of the movie. Genre bending is a common narrative technique used in many films across the globe, this however was not it – Grahanam is the by-product of a weak script. The performances by the cast barring a few exceptions were underwhelming and the screenplay was forced with dialogues lacking any kind of depth. It relies on the shock-and-awe factor to keep the audience invested in the characters and by the end of the film even the shock factor becomes stale.

The ambition and scope that the filmmakers envisioned is commendable. The basic concept of the film is no worse than many big budget Indian releases starring big names. Grahanam unfortunately belongs to an industry that has moved on from the shambles of the early 2000s and which is currently one of the best in the country where the benchmark has risen considerably.

A small film named Dahanam which won multiple awards at the international level, has hit the big screens today. Starring Lahiri Lahiri Lahirilo fame Aditya Om in the lead role, Dahanam is directed by Adari Murty Sai.

Set in the 1980s, Dahanam is the story of a temple priest Bharadwaj Sastry (Aditya Om). The temple is situated in Vaadarevupalli in the Visakhapatnam region and belongs to Bhupathi (Santhi Chandra). Bharadwaj Sastry believes in Lord Shiva and devotes his whole life to the service of God. On one side, the temple’s income keeps decreasing, and on the other hand, he has to win a legal battle against Bhupathi to safeguard the temple. Bharadwaj Sastry believes in Dharma completely and is not a man who is after money. Hence he faces several hardships even to feed his family. The rest of the film is about how Bharadwaj Sastry tackled his life issues.

Plus Points:

Dahanam deals with not one but many social concepts. But the main focus was on untouchability and social inequalities. There is genuineness in storytelling, and the makers need to be appreciated for their attempt. The caste issue and the practice of not allowing a fewer section of people into the temples are well depicted over the end.

Dahanam also talks about the adamant beliefs which are engraved in the minds of many from generations. Aditya Om, as a priest, gave a very settled performance. His subtle act did justice to the movie’s theme. After Aditya Om, it is FM Babai who gets the lion’s share of screen time. The senior actor is superb and natural as a person who performs final rites. The way he emoted in key scenes is brilliant.

Sony Reddy, Rajiv Naik, Santhi Chandra, and others are good in their respective roles. The dialogues are very well written, and they do make one think. The way Bharadwaj Sastry’s role realizes his mistake is nicely executed, and the movie ends on a satisfactory note.

Minus Points:

While the concept of the movie is relevant, the narration is snail-paced from start to end. Films like Dahanam are not everyone’s cup of tea, and one needs extreme patience to enjoy the proceedings. There are absolutely no commercial elements, and a few groups of the audience might find the movie boring.

There are many repetitive scenes in the film which could have been trimmed. Movies like these shouldn’t be long as the impact gets diluted. Dahanam has shades of the old Telugu flick “1947 Lo Oka Gramam”. What makes the latter powerful is the way social inequalities are portrayed in a nerve-wracking manner without any inhibitions. This is where Dahanam lacks the punch. There was scope for more drama, but the plain narration hindered the overall feel.

Technical Aspects:

Satish Kumar’s music is okay. The production values are adequate. S Rama Krishna’s cinematography takes us nicely into the 1980s era. The editing could have been much better, and the film should have been cut short by 10-15 minutes.

Coming to director Adari Murty Sai, his idea to present various social issues is good. But his screenplay isn’t completely engaging and lacks enough drama. While few scenes are well handled, most of the scenes seem prolonged. He extracted solid performances from the actors, though.

On the whole, Dahanam is a slow-paced period drama that focuses on adamant beliefs and social inequalities in society. The performances of Aditya Om and FM Babai make a mark, but the slow narration plays the spoilsport. Also, the movie caters only to a niche audience for the subject it deals with. Hence it becomes just an okay watch this weekend.

Madhurapudi Gramam Ane Nenu unfolds the compelling narrative of a village, interwoven with the intricate involvement of politicians and its profound impact on the lives of two close friends, triggered by the entry of a young woman. Babji (Venkata Satyadev) harbors a fervent ambition to secure the role of an MLA and emerge victorious in the ZPTC elections, pitted against the formidable Arudra (Kallu Krishnarao) within the confines of Madhurapudi village. His journey to attain this goal is significantly aided by his unwavering comrade, Soori (Siva Kantamaneni).

While Babji's political aspirations take center stage, Soori experiences a blossoming affection for Girija (Katalyn Gowda), who arrives in the village with the intent of promoting digital banking awareness. As Girija reciprocates Soori's sentiments, unexpected and shocking events ensue, catapulting their lives into turmoil. Unraveling the mysteries behind these events and exploring the intricate connections between MLA Muddu Krishna (Bharani Shankar), IT Minister (Abbulu), and the unfolding proceedings becomes the central focus of the story.

Madhurapudi Gramam Ane Nenu: Artists Review

Venkat Satyadev portrayed the role of an aspiring MLA commendably, exuding a strong on-screen presence. His engaging smile and charismatic looks leave a lasting impression. Siva Kantamaneni delivered a noteworthy performance, effectively conveying a range of emotions as a friend who goes to great lengths to support his comrade's dreams, while also convincingly displaying his anger and concern when his fiancée faces trouble.

Katalyn Gowda, in her role, portrayed grief and pain adequately. At times, she showcased a photogenic charm that resonated with her character as a girl from a rural background. Bharani Shankar and Abbulu delivered convincing performances in their respective roles as politicians. The rest of the cast played their parts in accordance with their characters, contributing to the overall ensemble.

Madhurapudi Gramam Ane Nenu: Technicians Review

Madurapudi Gramam Ane Nenu, scripted by Malli (Mallikarjuna), explores the life and events within a village. The director chose to narrate the tale from the perspective of the village itself, rather than focusing on individual characters. While the concept is promising, he fumbles a little bit while narrating the story. But, delivered a different film towards the end. 

Furthermore, the portrayal of the so-called antagonists as people devoid of values weakens the overall narrative and undermines its intended message. The first half of the film is disappointingly below par, and though the second half shows slight improvement, it fails to rescue the film from mediocrity. The director's undue emphasis on depicting violence once again detracts from the overall experience, making the story feel feeble, with average screenplay and direction, ultimately leading to a predictably clichéd conclusion.

Mani Sharma's musical contributions are passable, with just one or two emotional songs. His background score, however, manages to enhance certain scenes. Suresh Bhargava's cinematography effectively captures the natural essence of the village atmosphere. Gautam Raju's editing is adequate, though the film could benefit from the removal of some scenes, especially those depicting violence. Dialogues are mundane, and production values fall below the expected standard.

Altogether, Madhurapudi Gramam Ane Nenu is an undeniably dated narrative. Despite director Malli (Mallikarjuna)'s earnest intentions, the film falls short of effectively delivering its intended message, primarily due to poorly developed characters and an excessive focus on glorifying violence. In light of these significant shortcomings, Cinejosh assigns a rating of just 2.5 to Madhurapudi Gramam Ane Nenu . 

Actor Siva Kantamaneni should be commended for trusting and entrusting the director Mallikarjuna Malli for believing in the interesting plot and coming up with a risky and noteworthy project.
