How to get a PhD scholarship

How to get a PhD scholarship or funding

Uni life Published 23 Jan, 2024  ·  3-minute read

If you’re passionate enough about a topic to complete a PhD on it, we think that’s amazing. But, understandably, you’ll want some reassurance that you’ll be supported financially during your research endeavours. Let’s look at how to get a PhD scholarship in Australia.

A common way for PhD candidates to supplement their income is to do casual or even part-time work while completing their degree. However, this isn’t a viable option for everyone – and it may not be enough in some circumstances.

In such cases, a PhD scholarship is just what the doctorate ordered.

What is a PhD scholarship?

A PhD scholarship is much like any scholarship – it supports a PhD candidate to complete their studies.

PhD scholarships are offered by a variety of universities, specific schools, and research institutes. For example, at The University of Queensland (UQ), there are 2 categories of PhD scholarships you can consider:

  • UQ Graduate School scholarships  (UQGSS)  – about $33K per year for 3.5 years
  • earmarked scholarships for joining an existing research project – about $32K per year for 3.5 years.

In either case, your scholarship will comprise tuition fees and a living stipend. Both types also come with the possibility of a single extension and both domestic and international students are eligible to apply.

There is also a UQ Graduate School Scholarship which only covers tuition fees and does not include a living stipend. The UQGSS-T is only available to domestic students.

Deciding which scholarship category suits you will likely come down to whether an existing research project aligns with your interests. If you’ve got a niche passion and the ambition to find your own supervisor and create a fresh research proposal , a Graduate School scholarship is likely the path for you.

If you’d prefer to join an existing team of researchers pursuing an established line of research, you might find an earmarked scholarship more appealing. You can expand your search for a project that interests you by visiting FindAPhD.com , though we’d obviously love to see you contribute to the groundbreaking research efforts right here at UQ.

UQ has earmarked scholarships available for a wide variety of research projects. Our research areas span from agriculture to creative arts, health, business, science and everything in between. Explore our research areas and find an earmarked scholarship that appeals to your interests .

How to get a scholarship for a PhD

When you’re looking at an earmarked PhD scholarship for an existing project, the process is rather simple: apply for the advertised position by contacting the project supervisor.

However, things get a bit trickier when you’re creating a new research proposal. Here are some tips for how to get a fully funded PhD project:

  • Make sure your school or institute knows you want a scholarship , as they will need to nominate you for one. At UQ, this means selecting the option in your PhD application that says I would like to be considered for a UQ scholarship…
  • Choose the right supervisor. Some of the criteria for getting a PhD scholarship include the experience and expertise relevance of your supervisor and advisory team. So, you’ll want to find a supervisor who checks all the right boxes .
  • Get advice from your PhD supervisor . The quality of your research project is another large factor in determining whether you get a PhD scholarship. At the start, the main means of demonstrating this is your research proposal, so be sure to use your supervisor’s wisdom to make this proposal as steadfast as possible .
  • Prepare the appropriate documents/evidence. Other criteria include your academic performance, your research capabilities, and the quality of your proposed research environment. This means having evidence prepared to demonstrate these factors (e.g. the academic transcript from your honours/postgraduate degree, or details of the laboratory where you’ll be conducting your research) can help you attain a PhD scholarship.

PhD Degrees in Australia

A PhD is the highest degree awarded at global universities. PhD study is based on a substantial research project in an area of academic interest, typically up to 100,000 words in length, written as a thesis which must be defended in an oral examination at the end of the program. All PhD students are assigned a supervisor, and the duration of a PhD is typically three years full-time and six years part-time.

Very few research degrees feature taught modules, and as such a, student is expected to take more responsibility for their work and schedule. Universities in Australia are known for their academic excellence and state-of-the-art research infrastructure, along with their support for enterprise partnerships.

PhD Entry Requirements

Australian institutions are free to admit anyone to a PhD program, with admission generally conditional on the prospective student having completed an undergraduate degree with at least upper second-class honours, as well as a master's degree . English language ability proof is a must, and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is generally required. There is usually a first-year assessment of the remaining study, and the thesis is submitted at the end of the completed program.

Once you have decided on an area of research and have looked into how you will fund your study, there are a number of documents required when submitting your application. They include:

  • Academic transcripts
  • Academic references
  • Personal statement
  • Research proposal

- PhD Research Proposal

A research proposal is required by all students when applying to study for a PhD. The proposal should address the research you wish to undertake, how you will do it, and why it is important. A panel of experts must accept the proposal before your program can begin.

How much does a PhD cost in Australia?

Funding and researching a PhD can be expensive. In Australia, candidates can expect to pay 40,000 AUD- 60,000 AUD. Dedicated scholarships can help support your PhD, and it is rare for a PhD student not to be supported by some form of bursary, grant or scholarship .

10 PhD scholarships in Australia for 2022

PhD scholarships in Australia

Australia has been a perennial favourite destination among international PhD candidates: cutting-edge facilities, well-regarded universities with robust global rankings and dynamic research culture. Little wonder many seek PhD scholarships in Australia.

Home to six of the world’s top 100 universities, this country is one of the world’s education powerhouses. These universities offer almost every major possible, which is another attractive incentive.

At the same time, an Australian PhD takes on average three and a half years to complete; with research supervisors who strive to ensure students complete their PhDs on time and successfully. The high emphasis placed on education in Australia should assure that the quality of an Australian PhD is not compromised as well.

All of the above, however, do not come cheap. Melbourne has “one of the world’s wildest and most expensive real estate markets .” Sydney was recently ranked the most expensive city in Australia and 14th most expensive globally, thanks to its astronomical property prices, living costs, transportation and telecommunications.

University tuition fees are not cheap either. That is why in order to attract the best talents from all over the world, the government and universities listed below have created the following PhD scholarships in Australia for international students:

Australian National University – Australian Government Research Training Programme (AGRTP) International Fee Offset Scholarship

Australian National University is the top-ranked university in Australia (QS World Ranking 2021). Located in Canberra, this research-intensive university is well-known for its research expertise and strong industry partnerships.

Note that it has four research periods – however, the submission deadline is Sep. 30, 2022 should you apply in Research Period 1 and 2, 2023.

China Scholarship Council-University of Melbourne PhD Scholarship

How to apply for scholarships to study abroad guide: Masters/PhD Research Degree Programs in Australia

We receive this question frequently: "How can I apply for a scholarship to study in Australia or abroad?" The application process can be complex, particularly for research degree programs. However, it is easier to navigate if you know exactly what you are looking for and how to proceed.

Prior to beginning your application, it is important to have a clear understanding of the requirements necessary to attain the desired scholarships. ie the  requirements , Ensure that you fulfil these prerequisites to become eligible for application. This will prevent any unnecessary waste of time on your end.

Before submitting your application, make sure to review these important checklist items:

  • Please ensure that you fulfil all the eligibility requirements for the scholarship.
  • It's important to ensure that you retain as many referees as possible for recommendation letters.
  • It is advisable to have some friends review your application before submitting it.
  • Please ensure that all of your documents are prepared and ready for use. (See a list of expected documents at the end of the post)

If all the above steps have been met, you can then go ahead and start your application. Typically, when pursuing a graduate research scholarship, the application process is completed at the same time as applying for the corresponding course. The same application process is used for both admission and/or scholarship via the University's Online Application Portal. In some cases, there is an option to indicate the scholarship you are interested in while applying for your chosen course. In some instances, indicating your interest may not be necessary. If you are accepted to study at a particular university, you will automatically be considered for any applicable scholarships.

There are two major pathways for submitting applications for admissions and scholarships to study in Australia: You can either apply for admissions and scholarships via advertised projects  or by developing your own research project and indicating interest in a scholarship . As we proceed, we will provide further details on the following.

  • #1)  So for example, after finding a scholarship online from a platform like ours: -a) Follow the link to  visit the institution's website. Most often it's a general scholarship open to any course of interest across the University e.g. RTPS scholarships, -b) I dentify a research course/program that you are interested in, - c ) If you meet the eligibility requirements, contact a potential supervisor for supervision approval. If successful, you can apply for candidacy directly online on the University admission portal and will be automatically considered for the scholarship.
  • #2)  In another situation, it can be a project-specific scholarship, in this case, a) you must choose a project from a specific list of projects, b)  Get in touch with the designated project supervisor to discuss the suitability of your application and the specific requirements of the project.  c)  Submit your candidature.
  • #3)  Another major pathway: You can equally develop your own project and send an expression of interest to the University, the university in most cases would assist you to find a suitable supervisor, and if successful, you would be invited to submit an application for candidature.

Outlined below are five detailed steps to successfully apply for a scholarship to pursue a research degree program (Masters or PhD) in Australia.  Note.  This is a standard process not only in Australia but in Canada, the USA also in several European nations .

After you have identified a course of interest Eg Environmental Engineering(or a specific project)including the available scholarship, to apply, the first step is to :

  • Check to see that you meet the minimum entry requirements, then
  • Contact potential supervisors for supervision approval, next
  • Submit an expression of interest
  • lodge your application
  • Wait for the outcome. See these steps in detail below:

Step 1- check scholarship requirements (entry requirements). .

As mentioned above, To ensure success in your research degree scholarship application, it is vital to verify that you fulfil all the minimum entry requirements before submitting any application. This should be the very first step.   You are always free to contact the University for any enquiry on how to meet a certain requirement. If there are any available projects, please take some time to familiarize yourself with these projects and make note of the names of supervisors whose projects catch your interest. It's important to become familiar with their research and work because you'll need to locate a potential supervisor later on. Make sure to check other available scholarships also on the University website and the entry requirements

See General Masters/PhD research degree scholarship requirements here to study in Australia. The same criteria go for other Universities abroad

Step 2- Contact potential supervisors.

how to contact potential supervisors

To express your interest, you will need to reach out to potential supervisors and submit an expression of interest email(COLD EMAIL). Connecting with a potential supervisor is a separate process that you will need to undertake. You might be wondering what you will be discussing with him? You will have to discuss your research interest with him and see that he gives you the approval to continue with your application. Many universities in Australia and abroad require a prospective supervisor's approval of supervision before advancing your application to the next stage. It is essential to provide this proof of approval for a successful application. When providing evidence, it is typically sufficient to simply include the individual's name in your application form/EOI, or provide a screenshot of the email confirming their approval. The first key to scholarship success is obtaining approval from a potential supervisor.

Where do you find potential supervisors? Universities have staff websites where you can visit and identify potential supervisors in your area of interest. Finding the right researcher to become your supervisor is a very important part of your application.

Prior to contacting a potential supervisor, it is crucial to conduct an in-depth review of their academic background to ascertain that they are a suitable match for your proposed research topic. This will enhance the probability of discovering the ideal supervisor that meets your requirements.

Supervisors may have a list of projects available. You can express your interest in any of the listed projects or propose your own project for consideration. Many PhD programs offer research projects.

If you are unable to find a potential supervisor, contact the Graduate Research School. They will send your EOI(Expression of Interest) to suitable supervisors who may be interested in your proposed project.

At this stage of your application, it is ideal to already have a developed research plan .

Read more here on how to contact potential supervisors when seeking for research degree studentship position. Included in the post are examples of effective cold email samples and valuable tips to improve your success rate in the process.

Step 3- Complete an EOI.

Once you have met the minimum entry requirements for the program and gained the approval of a potential supervisor, you can proceed to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI).  Most Australian Universities, not all will ask to submit an EOI for a research degree program. This is also being done in most Canadian, American and European Universities. In some Universities, for your EOI  to be accepted, you must get in touch with a prospective supervisor would is ready to work with you and provide evidence of his approval. Usually in the form of a confirmation email.

What is an EOI? An Expression of Interest (EOI) is a preliminary application form that enables the University to determine the student's eligibility. This form is usually available on the research degree application website. You will have to download the form in most cases, fill it out and submit it to the Graduate Research School. Usually, Candidature Management Advisors will evaluate your EOI and may invite you to complete an application online if deemed eligible. If are applying for any specific University project of interest, you will have the opportunity to mention that here and the name of the supervisor.

An Expression of interest will usually demand a  short description of the student's proposed area of research and a summary of academic qualifications, including grades.

If your  (EOI) is successful, you will then be invited to submit a final application for the research degree program.

Some Universities, however, require applicants to first submit an EOI, and if deemed eligible for the program, they then send a request for you to find a supervisor in your area of research interest prior to beginning your application.

Step 4- Complete your application/Apply

Congratulations on the success of your EOI! Yeah! If your EOI  was successful, you have gotten approval from a supervisor who is eager to work with you, you will then be invited to complete your application online. During this process, you will need to prepare and submit the necessary materials:

Draft a research proposal.

As part of your research degree application, you will need to submit a research proposal. This document is crucial to your success and should be given significant attention. Crafting a strong proposal is essential as it indicates a well-defined vision of the research topic, which in turn establishes the framework for your project and thesis. Usually, there is a pre-existing template available that comes with clear instructions to be followed. This mostly covers a section in the EoI form.

If you have a project in mind, it's highly encouraged to draft a research proposal earlier before contacting a potential supervisor. Alternatively, if you are interested in applying for a University project, it is crucial to draft a research proposal that aligns with the goals of the project. Additionally, it is advisable to review the previous works of the potential supervisors to better understand their research focus.

When applying for scholarships or admission to study abroad, Research Proposals are crucial. It is important that your proposal outlines a research project with a clear objective that showcases your idea or research question in the relevant field. To create a successful proposal, you must possess Fundamental Research Skills and plan accordingly. Your proposal should establish the relevance of your idea, identify gaps in knowledge, and demonstrate how your research will fill those gaps

If you're applying for a scholarship and need to write a research proposal, I suggest taking the time to read up on some tips for making it captivating. Check out this resource for more information.

Statement of purpose(SOP).

Typically, an application website will provide a template for this purpose. However, in certain instances, you may need to download the form and fill it out manually, while in others, you can complete it directly online.

Referee reports.

For research degree programs, it's typical for universities to suggest that you provide the names of two or three referees. It's important that you have maintained positive relationships with your former supervisors, whether they were academic or professional.

Scholarships -indicate the specific scholarship you are applying for .

While filling out the online application form, you will find the available scholarship sections, here identify the specific scholarship you are interested in. However, in most cases, once you receive an offer of candidature, you are automatically considered for available scholarships. There is no need for a separate application, as the process for graduate research scholarships is completed when you apply for your course. The application process for both admission and scholarship is simultaneous.

In addition to the above-mentioned research proposal and statement of purpose, below is a summary of other expected documents you should get ready for your application.

Summary of expected documents to get ready for your application:

  • Academic curriculum vitae(CV)/Resume
  • academic transcript
  • Degree Certificate
  • English Language documents(For Non-native speakers)
  • References/Letters of Recommendations
  • Previous research program information

Step 5-Wait for the outcome and pray.

Once all this is completed, you can then go ahead and submit your application and any other requested document. You will be advised on the outcome of your application usually via email.

Once you have applied for the scholarship, you will be notified of its outcome. If your application is successful, you will be informed about the relevant scholarship you have been awarded. (If your scholarship application is unsuccessful, you may still be considered for the candidature offer only. You will need to look for other alternative sources to finance your study).

If successful, applicants have a limited period to either accept or decline an offer of candidature and/or scholarship, so as to commence their candidature.

How to accept your offer? To accept your offer and the scholarship, just follow the instructions in the email accompanying your offer.

Once you have indicated your acceptance of the offer, you will receive an acknowledgement email with further instructions about the commencement of your candidature. You will equally receive an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) for visa requirements. This is the document (CoE) you will use to apply for your visa

I have just provided you with a summary of the research degree application process. I hope you find this information helpful.

Some final advice: it's a good idea to apply for as many scholarships as you can. I lost count of how many schools I submitted scholarship applications to when I was applying to study abroad. Thankfully, I received offers from three different schools, which left me with the tough decision of choosing one. You can increase your chances of success by following this strategy. Wishing you the best of luck!

'Dance Your Ph.D.' winner on science, art, and embracing his identity

Weliton Menário Costa (center) holds a laptop while surrounded by dancers for his music video, "Kangaroo Time." From left: Faux Née Phish (Caitlin Winter), Holly Hazlewood, and Marina de Andrade.

Weliton Menário Costa grew up in rural Brazil. "I come from the countryside of the countryside of the countryside," he says. He didn't have much, but from his earliest days, he loved to sing.

"I just remember looking at the singers on television and loving them," Menário Costa recalls. "I think if I could have picked a profession — if the world was equal and you could pick anything — I would have picked 'musician.'"

He took a detour into science, but ultimately he's returned to embrace music professionally. And he recently picked up a major accolade. Menário Costa won this year's " Dance Your Ph.D ." contest, an annual competition organized by Science magazine where doctoral students and Ph.D. graduates showcase their research through dance.

Menário Costa's winning submission highlights his work on kangaroo behavior and personality, but it also celebrates his identity — and what he's had to overcome to embrace it.

'I would just sing ... every day'

When Menário Costa was a boy in Brazil, he would try to sing and dance with his younger sister outside. That's when the comments would start.

"People were always like, 'Oh, that's a girl thing, you're a f** or whatever,'" he says. "Back then, I didn't even know what it was. I just knew it was negative. It's a very sexist space and homophobic and all that."

When Menário Costa did receive a compliment, it was usually for how smart he was. So he buried himself in school and excelled. He got into a competitive high school. But even so, he was chronically anxious about what others thought of him and worried that he wasn't good enough.

" So instead of going to parties and dancing or performing and doing the things I actually loved," Menário Costa says, "I would just lock myself in the room and say, 'Hey, I have homework.' But when I would shower, I would just sing ... every day."

With time, Menário Costa made it to Australia — first to study English, and then he received a scholarship to pursue his Ph.D. in behavioral ecology at the Australian National University in Canberra. His research focused on eastern gray kangaroos in Wilsons Promontory National Park in southeastern Australia.

"And my main question was, do kangaroos have personality ... different personalities?," Menário Costa explains. "And then, what's driving the behavior you see? Is it due to personality, or is it the social environment?"

It was during his Ph.D. — when Menário Costa was on this other continent half a world away from Brazil — that he managed to connect with who he really was. He came out as queer. He started singing and dancing out in the world again. And after finishing his Ph.D. amidst the struggles of COVID and bushfires, Menário Costa decided to leave science and dive into creative work.

"Now I'm gonna be a singer, now I'm gonna be a dancer, and now I'm gonna be all these things I liked as a kid," he says. Menário Costa started performing at pubs and small venues, mostly singing covers. "Then, last year, I started writing as well, and performing my own original songs."

Diversity in kangaroos — and in dance

To Menário Costa, Science magazine's "Dance Your Ph.D." competition felt like "a perfect way of exposing my work as a singer songwriter ."

His submission — the song and dance "Kangaroo Time" — was born in an act of exuberant collaboration. The music video opens with Menário Costa driving to what appears to be his field site. There are a couple of kangaroo shots, but mostly it's a joyous sequence of dancers on an open landscape in Canberra — drag queens, Capoeira performers, ballet dancers, and people doing samba, salsa, hip hop, Brazilian funk, and traditional Indian dance.

"The way they move is very different," says Menário Costa, "but also what they wear to perform is quite different. I decided to use the actual diversity we have in a dance community."

This was how Menário Costa represented one of his central findings — that kangaroos have distinctive personalities, based on how much they squirm when they're handled as joeys and at what distance subadults and adult females move away from an approaching human.

In addition, kangaroo siblings often have similar personalities, and for that Menário Costa dances alongside his own sister — the first family member to ever visit him in Australia. "One of the main reasons that made her want to come was to be in that video," he says. "It was so special having her here."

Menário Costa also discovered that when kangaroos move between groups, they adjust their behavior to conform to that of their companions. In the video, he makes his way to other groups and adopts the new dancing styles as he goes.

The main lyrics are simple, but catchy: "I'm gonna share with you... hope you don't mind... some things I learned from my kangaroo time." The phrase "kangaroo time" has a rainbow of meanings.

"It means the time I did my kangaroo research," says Menário Costa. "But [it] also means the first time I lived as a gay man. It's the first time I lived as an immigrant, five years without going home. The time of reconnection to myself, of exploring my sexuality, of bridging these beautiful communit[ies]."

Menário Costa, who now goes by the stage name WELI, says that filming this music video — when all his worlds came together in a single afternoon — feels like his most significant achievement to date. He likens his first place finish to winning the Eurovision Dance Contest.

The video ends with text emblazoned onscreen — "Differences lead to diversity. It exists within any given species; it is just natural."
