Tuskegee students design Birmingham stadium through NFL partnership

April 24, 2024.

NFL stadium design TU student team

Contacts: Thonnia Lee , Office of Communication, Public Relations and Marketing                      A’Maiya Allen , NFL

Tuskegee University students from different majors worked together to complete a reimagined design of Legion Field Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama. The project is part of a partnership with the NFL and the Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science that was announced last fall .

The students participated in this multi-disciplinary initiative that created opportunities for students to focus on design, leadership and collaboration. The students designed the stadium with a focus on the fan and player experience, architectural design, engineering and construction. Students worked to complete the project throughout the semester and their experience culminated in a presentation of their proposed plan at the NFL league office in New York with league executives and members of the American Institute of Architects.

The students presented a proposal of renovations to Legion Field Stadium that included 65,000 seats, 100 luxury suites, a retractable roof, retractable fields and seats to accommodate soccer, and track and field events. The stadium is designed with solar panels, a modern water harvesting and cooling systems, a community village and garden for high end concessions contributing to the stadium’s sustainability. A hotel has been incorporated in the design as a destination location.  This unique NFL pilot program is a multi-disciplinary initiative creating opportunities for students across several schools and a part of the league’s larger goal to engage with HBCU campuses through its Campus Connection program.

“This is exactly the kind of experience we want our students to enjoy,” said President Charlotte P. Morris. “Giving them real-world experience in an industry they are working to join, gives them invaluable insight into what they should expect and the success they can ultimately accomplish.”

Professor Roderick Fluker, Associate professor of the School of Architecture and Construction Science and a faculty advisor, was impressed with how well the students worked together.

“We were really impressed with the knowledge and professionalism they exhibited throughout the process and certainly the final results,” he said. “Through the design process the team was able to research and implement stadium design innovations while also being sensitive to an urban neighborhood context.”

In addition to architecture, the disciplines they represent included construction science, mechanical engineering, sales and marketing, and supply chain management.

Jordan Pettway, a senior Sales and Marketing major from Mobile, appreciated the exposure.

“The NFL Case Study opened my eyes in so many ways,” she said. “I was able to work alongside the team learning about different aspects of their fields of study. The stadium design came to life piece by piece and I honestly could not believe my eyes when I saw what we created together in the end. This is an experience I’ll never forget.”

Senior Architecture major Chanse Huff agrees. “This project has broadened our perspectives far beyond our individual majors. My greatest takeaway is the power of true teamwork.”

Walter P. Cooper Sr., who leads the university career center, said interacting with NFL leaders gave the students an experience that exceeded expectations. “Students engaged with NFL representatives working in a variety of capacities affording each student invaluable exposure to various career pathways within the NFL. We look forward to growing this partnership to expand to other special projects with the NFL.”

The objective of the NFL’s HBCU Campus Connection program is to form relationships with students year-round through collaborative initiatives including lectures, speaking opportunities, case studies and various events promoting career development. Since 2018, the program has reached over 2,000 students.

“We are proud of the innovation and creativity the students displayed while suggesting solutions to a real issue within the NFL,” said NFL Senior Vice President of Football Operations Arthur McAfee III. “Through the Campus Connection program and our partnership with Tuskegee, the NFL’s commitment to HBCU’s extends beyond the field by driving awareness around career opportunities and providing access to the business of sports.”

The Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire speaking to Tina Coldham

Tina Coldham, Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) co-lead for The Birmingham, RAND and Cambridge Evaluation ( BRACE ) Centre in the School of Social Policy, has been honored with a Medal of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) in the King’s New Year's Honours list.

Renowned for her dedication to inclusive patient and public involvement in research, Tina has been instrumental in ensuring the active involvement of patients and the public across all stages of BRACE evaluation processes.

BRACE is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and aims to examine efforts to transform the organisation and delivery of health and care services across the NHS.

In her role, Coldham works closely with researchers, facilitating involvement from scoping to dissemination phases of BRACE projects. By convening regular meetings of a BRACE PPIE advisory panel and reviewing project outputs and ensuring that research remains relevant and impactful to the communities it serves.

Speaking about her work in patient and public involvement and engagement, Tina said: “I’ve been working in PPI for many years, self-employed. I’m a Participation, Involvement and Engagement Advisor for the Centre for Engagement and Dissemination (CED) at NIHR and was on the INVOLVE Advisory Group from 2012, becoming their Chair in 2017.

“ INVOLVE was incorporated into the new CED on 2020, and I stayed on during lockdown, when the entire landscape changed, to help set up the new centre, getting staff and policies in place, as well as helping with some of the work.

“I’ve remained a strategic voice for the public helping with the operational work according to my skill set. As someone with enduring mental health problems I’ve got into research to help find solutions to these problems and wider, knowing that the public/patient voice is important in all this. I’m immensely proud that my work for NIHR for 12 years has been reflected in being awarded a BEM.”

Tina started working with BRACE as a PPIE panel member, due to her work with INVOLVE, at the inception of the first BRACE Centre which started in 2018. Her experience and learning over those five years and the Centre’s desire to continue to further embed patients and the public involvement in to all that they do, led to the new centre director inviting Tina to be a PPIE Co-lead on the bid proposal.

My work with the current BRACE Centre came from being a public contributor in BRACE in the early years. I’m now co-lead for PPIE, strengthening my input as part of the team. I’m in a great position to advocate for more PPIE in the ongoing and new evaluations with BRACE and can work to make it happen. Tina Coldham

Tina’s British Empire Medal was awarded on behalf of the King by the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire on 18 March in Winchester, with a Buckingham Palace Garden party celebration to follow in May.

Maryland Water Resources Research Center

Department of civil & environmental engineering, university of maryland, college park, request for proposals: fy 2024 competitive grants 104(g).

The Maryland Water Resources Research Center (MWRRC) announces the release of the Request for Proposals (RFP) for the FY 2024 National Competitive Grant Program by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Water Resources Research Act Program  in cooperation with the National Institutes for Water Resources.

Section 104(g) of the Water Resources Research Act of 1984 requires that this competitive grant program focus on: “water problems and issues of a regional or interstate nature beyond those of concern only to a single State and which relate to specific program priorities identified jointly by the Secretary [of the Interior] and the [water resources research] institutes.” Objectives of this program also include the following:

  • Promote collaboration between the USGS and university scientists in research on significant national and regional water-resources issues. Proposals exhibiting substantial collaboration between the USGS and the applicant are strongly encouraged. Collaborative proposals should describe in detail the respective roles of the USGS and the applicant in the proposed work. It is anticipated that in FY2024 the USGS will have internal funds available for modest support of USGS scientists on selected proposals.
  • Promote the dissemination and application of the results of the research funded under this program, both to the scientific community and to the general public.
  • Assist in the training of scientists in relevant water-resources fields. Proposals that include a strong educational component (student support) are encouraged, as are those from early-career faculty.

Proposals are sought on the topic of improving and enhancing the nation’s water supply and availability, and promoting the exploration of new ideas that address or expand our understanding of water problems, including the following specific areas of inquiry (levels of priority are not assigned, and the order of listing does not indicate the level of priority):

  • Comparison of different water budget models, evaluation of relative model predictive skill and identification of specific opportunities for improvements.
  • Incorporation of how uncertainty in hydroclimate-forcing propagates to water budget components.
  • Evaluate scale-dependent uncertainties in water-budget predictions when using CONUS404. (e.g. How much more uncertainty at HUC12 versus HUC 8, which variables, and are specific uncertainties regional?).

Rasmussen, R.M., Liu, C., Ikeda, K., Chen, F., Kim, J., Schneider, T., Gochis, D., Dugger, A., and Viger, R., 2023, Four-kilometer long-term regional hydroclimate reanalysis over the conterminous United States (CONUS), 1979-2020: U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/P9PHPK4F .

  • Qualitative techniques to develop parameters or metrics for feedback inputs into hydrologic models (e.g. surveys/interviews/focus groups to understand how consumers change their behaviors around water use in response to supply shortages).
  • Construct utility functions of actual decision-makers/consumers that are used in the model, rather than hypothetical versions.
  • Exploration of close[d]-loop versus open-loop hydrologic models in different geographic contexts.
  • Natural language processing methods to assimilate and identify succinct hydrologic science issues in an area of interest, and additional AI/ML to provide a modeling pathway based on attributes of hydrologic model capacities.)
  • Rapid model development methods to quickly provide information regarding potential high-value data collection and guide further model development in a given geographic area.

Any investigator at an institution of higher learning in Maryland is eligible to apply through the MWRRC. If a proposal from an institution other than the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) is selected for funding, the funds will be managed as a subcontract from UMCP. Projects will only be awarded if funds are appropriated to the USGS to support the program.

Proposals may be for projects of 1 to 3 years in duration, may request up to $310,000 in federal funds, and require a 1:1 (non-federal:federal) match. Federal funds may not be used to pay Indirect Costs (IDC); the foregone IDC may be included in the non-federal match. Proposals in PDF format must be emailed to the MWRRC Director Dr. Kaye Brubaker at kbru<at-symbol>umd.edu by 11:59 p.m., May 15, 2024 to allow adequate time for MWRRC to submit the proposals by the May 30, 2024, deadline for institutes. Only proposals submitted to MWRRC by May 15, 2024  will be transmitted to the National Grants Competition Proposal Peer Review Panel.

Additional information about research priorities, proposal content, format and review process are available in the  RFP .

PIs who intend to submit proposals under this program are asked to notify the Center as soon as possible (kbru<at-symbol>umd.edu) so that we may prepare for and assist with proposal preparation and processing.
