Alternate Ending to Romeo and Juliet Free Essay Sample

Everyone knows the sad ending of the tragedy and love story of Romeo and Juliet. But, what if we could go back in time and change everything? What if the story didn't have to have a sad ending. What if Juliet could have changed the story for everyone. As destiny would have it, by reaching the end of the game, Juliet has been given a chance to rewrite her story and change the ending. Read along and find out how Juliet saved her story. The scene of the story is set right before Romeo drinks the poison in act 5 scene 3.

"And, lips, O, you. The doors of breath, seal with a righteous kiss. A dateless bargain to engrossing death." (5. 3. 113-115). As Romeo bends over to give his lady a kiss he feels something move. He glances at his lady just to see her pale and still. "My imagination is driving me insane looking for light in a dark cave." Romeo says, "Come, bitter conduct, come, unsavory guide! Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on. The dashing rocks thy seasick weary bark! " (5.3. 116-118). Romeo glimpses at his dear lady again, and back at the bottle as tears continuously drip down his face. His heart feels the sensation of Juliet breathing next to him but his mind knows it's not true. He grabs the bottle ready to drink "Here's to.." Juliet opens her eyes and looks to the side confused to see Romeo with a menacing bottle of poison in his hands. As Romeo lifts the bottle to take a sip Juliet knocks the bottle of death out of his hands.

Romeo looks to the side shocked to see Juliet awake, gasping for air, relieved that she'd woken up on time. "What were you doing? Taking your life without knowing the consequence? And what are you doing here?" Juliet scowled. "My love? How? What happened," Romeo says, still in shock. Juliet shakes her head smiling, leaning in to give Romeo a hug. "I went to the Friar when my parents told me to marry Paris. He gave me a sleeping potion so that I look like I'm dead," Juliet expresses with a smile on her face. All of a sudden, they start to hear the footsteps of people coming. "As a matter of fact, I still have some now. And I think we should both use it now," Juliet whispers. "Why dear?" Romeo replies confused. "Perhaps if our families see that we've taken our lives for each other, it will end the feud between them. If not," Juliet responds. "We shall run away to Mantua," Romeo finishes her sentence. "Yes, quickly now take some of the potions, and put the bottle of poison in your hand" Juliet hurriedly said. They both drink some of that potion and fake their death with the poison bottle in their hands.

Later that day both of their families receive news of their death. The Prince, Capulets and Montagues gather at the tombstone where Juliet and Romeo lay. Soon the Friar comes and explains all that had happened between the two. "The day that was Tybalt's last, was the day I married Romeo and Juliet. When Juliet received news of her cousin dying and Romeo's exile, she was upset about both. To make matters worse for her, Lord Capulet forced her to marry County Paris whom she didn't love. That night she came to me for advice or news that she'd take her life. I then gave her a sleeping potion to fake her death and sent Romeo a letter with the plan. That letter though never made it to Romeo." The Capulets and the Montagues look in disbelief as they realize that their fighting wasn't worth the many lives it cost. "My friend Montague, give me your hand as we lead our families into an era of peace," Lord Capulet says. Just then, Romeo and Juliet open their eyes to see their families so happy to see them awake.

Thus the fighting between the Montagues and the Capulets comes to an end. The true love of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet unknowingly taught them a lesson and ended this feud. Both of the families lived happily ever after. The End!

Inform students that they will have an opportunity to re-write the ending of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet .

Review what students have read so far. [ Author’s Note: The students have already read the first four acts of Romeo and Juliet .] Read Act V Scene iii with the roles of the characters assigned to the students. Ask students to point out some of the differences that they noticed between the two versions. (Examples: 1. In the modern movie Romeo kills himself with a gun rather than a knife. 2. In the modern movie, when they were in the tomb, Romeo and Juliet glanced at each other for a second and realized that there had been a mix-up.) Ask students which version they prefer and why.

Separate the class into groups of four. Have them brainstorm and list four possible alternative endings to the play. One student needs to be a recorder and another student will need to be a reporter. Once everyone has finished, have each group read their favorite alternative ending aloud to the rest of the class. Assessment: Each student will be assigned to re-write the ending of Romeo and Juliet . The ending must be written in play form with dialogue, and the character who is speaking must be identified. Students are permitted to use ideas that they came up with in class, but each student will complete the assignment individually.

romeo and juliet alternate ending essay

An Alternative Ending to Romeo and Juliet by Reid McGrath

If romeo had received the letter.

Romeo (in the catacomb, lying down beside Juliet)

The friar’s note said: “Romeo she will wake.” Thus here I am now with my life at stake. You’ll resurrect? Or will the potion err? the anesthesia taken on a dare, a hope that it will work, won’t stop your brain; I start to think that this is all insane. You are my other half; I’m facing you. Our eyes, like wounds, one inch apart. Into your mouth, your nose, I breath. I crawl; I turn beneath the pall, not facing you. Discern my back now ‘gainst your back. I feel you move! Aristophanes “whole-human” would approve. A caterpillar in this sick cocoon; I’ll wait to morph out of this backwards spoon.

Juliet (One month later. She is sitting at a plain wooden table with a few crumbs on it, a dirty plate and glass, a vase full of wilted flowers, with some flies in the tepid and murky water. Romeo, who is gazing absentmindedly out of the window into one of Mantua’s more sordid city streets, has two empty wineskins of Cabernet in front of him. The apartment is small and unfurnished and you can hear the mice in the walls.)

So here we are in Mantua. What now? Where once was sun a darkness clouds your brow. You stay inside all day in this bare flat. We don’t have money; yet you’re growing fat… Tell me how that works, Romeo? Recall our honeymoon, how ripped you were, the hall we ran through, to our rooms, sloughing our clothes. We really were a randy pair: God knows we sinned; we did; but not in that way, no, we were married; but Moses said: “I show you these Commandments blazed into this rock ‘Obey your parents. V.’” Is it a shock we suffer now financially, are shunned? The friar’s plan was fry-ered; I just punned.

Romeo Our honeymoon is done. There is no dough. We went to where the honeymooners go: to Rome and then to Ischia where the hares are raised in pits, and fished out, sat in chairs out in the yellow sun at some cafe consuming bread and cheese and wine all day, prosciutto from an acorn-finished pig; I clenched in purple teeth an English cig. We laid in bed all day, or by a pool, or on the beach, or on the balc’. The cool sweet air, from off the water, blew the sash. We burned and burned through bonfires of cash. For one month, oh; oh, what a life we led? But now that month is gone. Our love is dead.

Juliet What were we really thinking? How could we leave all our fam behind? Just you and me? It sounded nice while in that catacomb but Verona’s the place I call my home. It is the place that you call your home too and that is why you hate me, why you’re blue. Our dreams were dashed against the slipp’ry rocks! Our dreams, like cars, should come with built in shocks to mitigate the jolt of when they crash, because of speed and speedbumps ere they smash, careening towards the cliffs of Life, the sea of what we know is mere Reality… We should have got to know each other first. The play goes poorly when it’s not rehearsed.

Romeo You say I’m growing fat; I’m growing old. A young man ages quick pining for gold. I don’t know what to do; I’ve killed my friends by getting in the middle. Make amends? with who? O you Mercutio are dead who always mocked those silly books I read: Petrarch’s sad numbers, Dante’s early work La Vita Nuova. I was wont to shirk my duties for my father, Montague, my studies in the classroom: “Oh boohoo!” I wailed against my fate. My fate was good! It’s just that I had never understood the maxim bout the fishes in the sea. You were, I thought, the only girl for me!

Juliet I should have put you through more tests—my fault. I was bombarded by your strong assault of passion, ardor, language; Paris too was knocking at my vestal door. I flew into that bone-crib, drank the vile up, for you, alas, the better looking pup, the better talker, poet—Pilgrim, ah and here we are exiles in Mantua…

Oh Romeo, I’m sorry, you’re not bad; it’s just that when I think of what we had, I think that life is one complex mean trick. The gymnast needs to be coached ere she stick her landing safely on the padded mat. My kinsmen hate me; I blame me for that.

Romeo (after a minute, growing visibly contemplative and remorseful)

You sound like Helen but it’s not your fault. I was the Trojan Paris. I assault you even now, when I should go to work, get off my ass: The breadwinner can’t shirk the onus that he owes to his nice wife. The problem though is my entire life I haven’t worked at all; nor have I said I’m sorry, when I should have. Oh we’re wed we might as well get on with it; I’m changed. What if our marriage wasn’t pre-arranged? Perhaps you didn’t love me like you thought; you’re blameless, girl; two Parises had fought for your white hand. I had the better tongue. Should we go out tonight? I’m feeling young.

Juliet We’ll take a walk. I want to talk tonight. I am so glad we do not have to fight about this any longer. When they see us working on our marriage. It will be clearer to them that we have settled down; we have matured, are serious. The clown of our old love has lost its squeaky nose. Call our old love: “Pinocchio!” It grows (the lie) despite the fact that one is blind and ignorant — But that is all behind us now, our nose has shrunk, and we are true in that we now know what we have to do: We have to nurture this, our Love, our seed. My time of month’s long-gone and I don’t—

Romeo (interrupting her)

You’re kidding— No, you’re serious. I don’t know what to think; I have to think; I won’t! I cannot be a Hamlet-thing; I think too much (or like the Irish say) I tink. Tinking is like a chisel and I tick my Time away in tinking like a mick. I drink too much; I tink too much; I tock; I sway as if I were a kind of clock, a reed; I paint, I draw, I write, I read. But Doing-Time is here and now I need to do, (“hacer,” in Spanish), duty mad to do my duty as a doting dad. I’ll go to work wherever work may be. I’ll dig a ditch or I will plant a tree.

The Nurse (Back in Verona, having received orders from the friar to go immediately to the two women, who are in a salon getting their hair done. They jump up, startled, in curlers, when the nurse arrives…)

O Lady Montague and Capulet! I know you have been worried but don’t fret! I know you have lost sleep over your bond of friendship, lest your husbands know, abscond you need not do; but please to Mantua come see your new grandchild! I just saw him for myself! He’s healthy and he’s calm! Delivered just this morning in white balm that comes with birth: protecting him. On dug of Juliet herself! I see you hug! You know that all these family quarrels will be swallowed and forgiven like a pill that succors, uplifts. This his name will do: Mercutio Capulet Montague…!!!

Anachronistically witty and delightful, Reid! I like this ending better than Shakespeare’s. 🙂

I really enjoyed reading this!

This is a very very interesting ending and of course it’s the natural good ending too. Yes, the boys and girls go mad with love, and never think of their future. No dough, no love. Aging cures some ailments, even love. The language and narrative style and poetic style(without capitalisation of first letter…the style I follow) are all beautiful.

' src=

Delightful.

Thank you. I’m glad you all enjoyed it. It was a fun project. There’s actually a father Montague and Capulet section that I clipped for the journal because the whole piece was too long already. But now I am hesitant to share it as this ending seems to be successful.

I love it. My favorite line: “The play goes poorly when it’s not rehearsed.”

' src=

Nice, down-to-Earth, humourous take on Shakespeare, some fun vernac, chock-a-block with pleasant lines and surprising scenes.

Alternative Ending of “Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare

An alternate ending is a story conclusion considered, written, or developed but was ultimately rejected in preference for a different resolution. Alternative endings are frequently assumed to have minimal impact on the standard plot. Consequently, whenever critics and test audiences disagree with the filmmaker’s concept, the producers may create other endings since consumer preferences must supersede creative intent. Occasionally, a production firm may acquire a good bargain on production first, predicting potential concerns with test audiences before they materialize. As shown below, this is one of the most talked-about and cherished stories of all time, and the finale has elicited strong emotions among story-reading and film fans. As a result, this article will tell the story of Romeo and Juliet’s alternative conclusion.

Thus, in this scenario, the alternate ending of Romeo and Juliet’s story begins when the message of Juliet and Friar Laurence’s great plot of the false death has just been conveyed to Romeo. Earlier on, Romeo was truly lucky because the generally upsetting news of Juliet’s presumed death would have prompted him to do something exceedingly foolish or idiotic, which he later learned that he had done for no reason (Romeo and Juliet). As he rejoiced at his good fortune, he returned to look for Julie, found her, and took her away from the dreadful conflict between Montage and Capulet.

However, first, Romeo arrived at the tomb and sat at Juliet’s side, waiting for the poison she had swallowed to wear off. Unexpectedly, someone entered the grave to visit the ‘deceased’ Juliet and saw Romeo. He fearlessly requested a battle, but Romeo said that violence wore him out, and on the last occasion he challenged someone, he murdered the adversary and lost the respect of his beloved’s household. Instead of attacking Romeo, the stranger proceeded to notify Capulet about Romeo’s alarming visit. While this was going on, Juliet rubbed her tired eyes and gazed up further into the eyes of Romeo, the one person she had gone to such lengths to “die” (Romeo and Juliet). Romeo warned her about the invader and how her relatives would soon learn about their nefarious plan of eloping.

As a result, they resolved to flee and set a trap on the grave, making it appear as if Romeo had laid some curse on Juliet’s body upon exiting, thereby concealing Juliet’s death and his identity while disclosing none of their reckless and uncomfortable falsehoods. The blissfully reunited pair left the country to start a new and carefree life where they could live in each other’s memories and enjoy eternal love. They settled in a modest house and reared a child called Ruliet. However, Romeo and Juliet’s relationship had become more unmanageable than their previous one, resulting in many emotionally damaging disputes for the tiny kid. They ultimately decided it would be better to separate Juliet now had absolute control of the house, possessions, the child, and everything else they possessed. She later became a prostitute to provide for her kid Juliet, while on the side of town, Romeo was evicted from his home and forced to live on the streets.

Both individuals led a hopeless life where Romeo frequently broke into people’s homes, searching for food and other necessities. After many long years of thievery and other deplorable crimes, he resolved to commit suicide with a well-known poison he had stolen however, he failed. Romeo is presently in a mental institution distant from Verona. The booby trap he and Juliet had set in the grave, which they thought was brilliant, did not function.

Lord Capulet and Montage ultimately discovered their children’s deception and agreed to set aside their disagreements of parenting. “What have these kids done?!” Montage said “they believe they understand what love is, yet they lack discipline and wisdom! We have to do something about it!” he continued to lament (Romeo and Juliet). Montage and Lord Capulet acted on their promise that something needed to happen. They then began searching for the two lovers, which lasted for five years before discovering slight indications of Romeo’s previous street existence. They inquired throughout the neighborhood to see if anyone knew where Romeo was and soon found someone who knew where he used to stay on the streets. The person informed them that Romeo had been sent to a mental institution after attempting to commit suicide with a lethal poison.

Montague and Lord Capulet both thanked the person and proceeded to the institution. When they arrived, they chastised Romeo for his heinous behavior. Capulet believed that his crime was a suitable punishment, mainly since the whole relationship with Juliet had not been successful. After that, Montague killed Romeo while sleeping with a razor blade imprinted with Juliet’s fingerprints. As a result, Juliet was sought and detained once the police learned of the tragedy. Juliet was perplexed by these charges and began wailing for an eternity. Ruliet, the daughter, was sent to reside with Capulet and Montague. Consequently, Montague covertly became a crazy murderer due to an addiction he had developed. He transformed into a deadly psychopath who killed for many years and was never apprehended. Ruliet was far more intelligent than her parents, and she became a great philosopher, yet eventually condemned her.

Romeo and Juliet are arguably the most popular and influential star-crossed lovers in literature. They are so well-known that even though it had been centuries since Shakespeare wrote the tragic play, people from around the world still make adaptations of it—from books and short stories to film and even web series. In fact, there was even a fantasy anime called Romeo x Juliet made in 2007, loosely based on the Shakesperian play. What’s more, there was also a British-American animated movie released in 2011 called Gnomeo and Juliet that portrayed the iconic couple as garden gnomes.

The characters’ popularity is no surprise though because a lot of people enjoy stories that highlight eternal love even though they end in tragedy.
