The 7th edition of the APA title page (introduced in 2019) has separate formatting guidelines for student and professional research papers. It replaced the APA 6th edition, which was introduced in 2009. The APA 7 formatting guidelines allow for more flexibility when it comes to font size and style.

We will be taking a look at the formatting guidelines for the APA style cover page for students as well as professional papers. In order to help you create an appropriate cover page, we’ve also included an APA 7 title page template and plenty of APA cover page examples. 

What is the title page for an APA paper?

The APA title page is the first page of your academic paper that provides information on the title, author(s), professors, and institutions affiliated with your research paper. There are separate APA cover page formats for student and professional papers.

An APA 7 title page consists of the following components:

Student paper

  • Page number*
  • Title of the paper
  • Name of author(s)
  • Institutional affiliation
  • Name and number of the course
  • Name of professor(s)
  • Date of submission

*A running head (shortened version of the title) is generally not required for student papers unless explicitly stated by the professor.

Professional paper

  • Page number 
  • Running head 
  • Institutional affiliation(s)
  • Author note (Author’s ORCID iD, affiliation changes, disclosures of conflicts of interest, and the author’s contact information)

Now that we’ve gotten a gist of the APA title page format, let’s understand how to construct cover pages for both these versions in detail.

How to construct an APA title page

Before you start formatting the APA first page, there are a few ground rules you must consider. Here are the rules for formatting an APA title page:

  • Leave a one-inch margin for all pages. 
  • Use double spacing throughout your cover page.
  • Maintain consistency in font size and style. 
  • Avoid using any titles (Dr, Prof) or degrees (MA, PhD).
  • Include the running header and the page number on the top left and right corners respectively. (Simply include the page number for student papers.)
  • After leaving 4–5 lines, input and centrally align the title of your paper.
  • Include the first, middle, and last name(s) of the author(s) respectively, exactly below the title.
  • Include the name of the affiliated university/universities below the names of the authors involved.
  • For student papers, include the name of the course professor and the due date below the affiliated university. 
  • For professional papers, include the author note a few lines below the affiliated university/universities.
  • The author note should be bolded and centrally aligned.
  • Details such as the author’s ORCID iD, contact information, affiliation changes, and disclosures of conflicts of interest should be right aligned and placed under the author note.  

The APA 7 format is pretty flexible when it comes to the font style. You can use any of the following font styles in your paper:

  • 12-point Times New Roman 
  • 11-point Calibri
  • 11-point Arial
  • 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode  
  • 11-point Georgia  
  • 10-point Computer Modern  

Now, let’s take a closer look at how to construct the individual elements of both student and professional versions of APA 7th edition title pages:

The following APA cover page examples will help you locate the exact position of each component. These examples cover both, student and professional papers and will guide you in constructing your own cover page. We’ve labeled each of these components and will guide you on how to format them.

Here are the main components of the above APA title page examples:

1. Page number

The page number in an APA style title page should be present on the top right corner of each page and the title page should always be considered page number “1”.

Follow these steps to correctly format the page number in Microsoft Word: 

  • Activate the header by double-clicking on the top of the page.
  • Click on the “Insert” tab.
  • Select the “Page numbers” option.
  •  Hover over “Top of Page” and select “Plain Number 3”.

Once this process is complete, you should have a page number for all your sheets.

2. Running head

A running head consists of the title of your paper in all caps. It is compulsory when it comes to professional research papers, but is generally not mandatory for student papers.  

The running head should be in line with the page number, left aligned, and under 50 characters long (including spaces). If your title is longer, you’ll have to shorten it so it can fit the character count of the running head. Make sure to include the main idea of the title here and exclude the less important parts.

3. APA title

The title of your APA cover page must be succinct, informative, and eye-catching. It should also contain the relevant keywords of your paper, essentially providing a gist of your paper. Although not mandatory, it is a good idea to limit your title to under 12 words.

Here’s how to create your APA format title as per the specified guidelines:

  • Position your title 4–5 lines from the top of your page.
  • Select your title to centrally align and bold it.
  • Use the title case* while creating your heading.

*Capitalize the first letter of each word apart from articles and prepositions.

4. Name of the author(s)

After adding your title, mention the name of the authors under the title of the paper (leave a blank line in between). The APA formatting guidelines for the names of authors are different for student and professional papers.

Student papers

Student papers only include the names of authors involved in the process of writing the paper.

  • Make sure to include the first, middle, and last names of the authors in precisely this order.
  • In the case of two authors, separate the names with an “and”.
  • In the case of three or more authors, separate each name with a comma and input the last name with an Oxford comma as well as an “and”.
  • Don’t mention titles such as “Dr” and “Prof” or degrees such as “MA” and “PhD”.

Professional papers  

The names of authors in professional papers follow similar guidelines to those of student papers. However, they do include a few additional elements.

  • In the case of multiple affiliated institutions, use superscript numbers after the names of the authors. 

5. Institutional affiliations

An author’s institutional affiliation is placed below their name on an APA cover page.

  • Add the department and university name, separated by a comma. 
  • In the case of multiple affiliations, mention the institutions corresponding to each author in the order of their names.
  • Add a superscript number before the name of each institution to indicate the corresponding author.

6. Name and number of the course

It’s mandatory to include the name and number of the course for student papers . 

  • Align the information centrally and place it below the institutional affiliation. 
  • Write the course number in all caps followed by the course name and separate them by a colon. (For example: HISTORYLIT303: Historical Writing)
  • Write the name of your course professor below the course name and number and align it centrally.
  • Include the designation as well as the first and last name of your professor. 

7. Author note

Professional papers often contain an author note.

  • Place the “Author Note” label at the bottom half of the page, bolded and aligned centrally.
  • Add an indent of 0.5 inches for all entries in the author note and align them to the left.
  • Follow the author’s names with their ORCID iDs.
  • Mention any changes in the authors’ affiliation.
  • Disclose any conflicts of interest.
  • Add the authors’ contact information.

8. Date of submission

The date of submission for the paper is only to be included for student papers and should be placed below the professor’s name. 

  • Centrally align the date of submission using the “Month, Day, Year” format. 
  • Spell out the month and avoid abbreviating it. 
  • Include the complete year instead of just the last two digits.

If you’re wondering about making your dissertation cover page, chances are you’re nearing the final stretch of your doctoral journey. Congratulations!

Luckily, making your title page is one of the simplest tasks you’ll have to complete. Generally speaking, there’s a template your institution will use and you just have to fill in your information.

What Should a Dissertation Cover Page Include?

The inner artist in you might want to make your dissertation cover page beautiful: printed in color, maybe with pictures, or with an interesting font or design. However, you’re going to be limited by your university. 

Pretty much every university that I’ve come across has a template and guidelines that you must follow for your dissertation cover page. You may just be filling in things like your title, name, your university’s name, maybe your committee members’ names, and not much more. You won’t have much (if any) creative license.

The advantage of this is, by the time you get to that stage, you may be tired of writing and it will be easier to follow directions than to come up with something creative. Your dissertation cover page doesn’t need to be a work of art. It just needs to convey what the dissertation is about.

Dissertation Cover Page: The Title

The aspect of your dissertation cover page that you have the most control over is the title . It’s also the most important to get right. 

The main thing to remember is, keep the title simple . It should simply tell a person what they’re going to read in the document. Don’t try to intrigue people or be too clever, just tell them directly. Having a straightforward title helps your committee approve your dissertation more quickly.

Your title should include relevant information that gives the reader a complete picture of what your study was about. Generally speaking, you’ll want to cover a few specific areas.

Quantitative Title Requirements

  • Type of relationship between variables.
  • Key variables (independent and dependent).
  • Population.

Qualitative Title Requirements

  • Central conceptual issue investigated.
  • Qualitative tradition applied.
  • Participant group.

When starting your thesis or dissertation process, one of the first requirements is a research proposal or a prospectus. It describes what or who you want to examine, delving into why, when, where, and how you will do so, stemming from your research question and a relevant topic .

The proposal or prospectus stage is crucial for the development of your research. It helps you choose a type of research to pursue, as well as whether to pursue qualitative or quantitative methods and what your research design will look like.

Prior to jumping into the research for your thesis or dissertation, you first need to develop your research proposal and have it approved by your supervisor. It should outline all of the decisions you have taken about your project, from your dissertation topic to your hypotheses and research objectives .

Depending on your department’s requirements, there may be a defense component involved, where you present your research plan in prospectus format to your committee for their approval.

Your proposal should answer the following questions:

  • Why is your research necessary?
  • What is already known about your topic?
  • Where and when will your research be conducted?
  • Who should be studied?
  • How can the research best be done?

Ultimately, your proposal should persuade your supervisor or committee that your proposed project is worth pursuing.

Strong research kicks off with a solid research question , and dissertations are no exception to this.

Dissertation research questions should be:

  • Focused on a single problem or issue
  • Researchable using primary and/or secondary sources
  • Feasible to answer within the timeframe and practical constraints

  • Complex enough to develop the answer over the space of a paper or thesis
  • Relevant to your field of study and/or society more broadly

  • Which communication streams are the most effective for getting those aged 18-30 to the polls on Election Day?

An easy rule of thumb is that your proposal will usually resemble a (much) shorter version of your thesis or dissertation. While of course it won’t include the results section , discussion section , or conclusion , it serves as a “mini” version or roadmap for what you eventually seek to write.

Be sure to include:

  • A succinct introduction to your topic and problem statement
  • A brief literature review situating your topic within existing research
  • A basic outline of the research methods you think will best answer your research question
  • The perceived implications for future research
  • A reference list in the citation style of your choice

The length of your proposal varies quite a bit depending on your discipline and type of work you’re conducting. While a thesis proposal is often only 3-7 pages long, a prospectus for your dissertation is usually much longer, with more detailed analysis. Dissertation proposals can be up to 25-30 pages in length.

Generally, an outline contains information on the different sections included in your thesis or dissertation , such as:

  • Your anticipated title
  • Your abstract
  • Your chapters (sometimes subdivided into further topics like literature review , research methods , avenues for future research, etc.)

A well-planned research design helps ensure that your methods match your research aims, that you collect high-quality data, and that you use the right kind of analysis to answer your questions, utilizing credible sources . This allows you to draw valid , trustworthy conclusions.

The priorities of a research design can vary depending on the field, but you usually have to specify:

  • Your research questions and/or hypotheses
  • Your overall approach (e.g., qualitative or quantitative )
  • The type of design you’re using (e.g., a survey , experiment , or case study )
  • Your sampling methods or criteria for selecting subjects
  • Your data collection methods (e.g., questionnaires , observations)
  • Your data collection procedures (e.g., operationalization , timing and data management)

A dissertation prospectus or proposal describes what or who you plan to research for your dissertation. Normally, this format doesn’t require a cover page, but some instructors still ask for it. If you’re required to make a cover page, follow the guidelines set by your instructor .
  • Chicago Manual of Style or CMS This format is now in its 16th Edition, and it’s also commonly used in the fields of humanities and arts. In such a format, you might need to make a standalone cover page, or you may add the title on the first page of your document.

Business cover page

This style is very common in the corporate world, and its design would depend on the nature of the company or the organization. Some cover pages require formality and professionalism while others may need more flair and creativity. How to make a cover page?

When you’re thinking about preparing a cover page template, remember that it’s all about the first impression. Your document might have a lot of good content, but without a well-made report cover page, your target audience might not even read it. There are many crucial things to keep in mind when creating your report’s cover page.

The cover page is at the very start of a document. From the beginning, the purpose of this page is to provide the reader with a good idea of what your document is all about. You communicate this information by including all the relevant information on this page. Here are some helpful steps to follow when making a cover page for the project in Microsoft Word:

  • First, open a new document in Microsoft Word.
  • Click on the Insert tab to find the drop-down menu for cover page templates. From there, you can choose which template you’d like to use for your project.
  • When you click on a template, it will appear as the first page of your document.
  • Click on the fields which have already been pre-formatted and start typing the information. First, the title of your document then the subtitle, the date, your name, and more.
  • If you don’t see a style you like in among the available templates, you can also customize one of the pre-formatted templates. For instance, you’d like to change the background image of the template, simply right-click on that picture then select “Click Picture” in the menu.
  • If in the middle of making your document, you’d like to change the cover page, you can do this too. Just go back to the first page then choose a new template from the menu. In doing this, the information you’ve added won’t get changed.
  • After you’ve added all the information on your cover page, don’t forget to save it in a location that’s easily accessible.

As we’ve said, making a cover page doesn’t require much effort. Even if you want to make your own customized template, you can do this in a matter of steps and in very quick time. The pre-formatted templates available in Microsoft Word will save you a lot of time and effort. However, using such a template would mean that you can’t make your own personality and style shine through. Here are some steps to follow if you plan to design your own portfolio cover page:

  • Choose one of the pre-formatted templates from the Insert tab then start editing the template. Change the colors, font styles, and all the other elements in the template.
  • You can get stock-free images online and use those for your cover page. Move the elements around and see which arrangement is the most aesthetically appealing.
  • When you’re happy with how you cover page, save your document to preserve your customized design.

No matter how you choose to make your cover page, make sure to add all of the important elements which we have discussed in the previous section.

How to create a title page?

Title pages are simple and easy to make. However, you need to follow some specific guidelines when making them. You can download our title page template if it fits into the style you’re instructed to follow. Since making such a template isn’t complicated, you can also make it yourself. Just follow these steps:

  • Space the title of the document about a third down the page. If your document has a long title or it has a colon somewhere in it, you can use two lines for the title.
  • Make use of “title case capitalization” wherein you use a capital letter at the beginning of the important words such as the verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs.
  • Add your name as the author of the document right below the title. Use your complete name and start with your first name, middle initial, then your surname. If more than one person wrote the document, include all of the full names.
  • Add the name of your institution, organization or university. This will tell the readers where you performed most of your research. If several authors from different institutions wrote the document, add the name of the institution right below the name of the author/s.
  • Now it’s time to format your template. Your title page should be double-spaced. To do this, highlight the text and choose the double space option in the line spacing drop-down menu.
  • Your title should have a horizontal center alignment.
  • Then add a running header which appears at the top of the page and continues throughout the document. But the header isn’t the title of the document, just a few keywords or about 50 characters.
  • The next thing to add is the page number which appears at the upper right-hand corner of the cover page and all the other pages in the document.

Finding a topic.

  • What interests you? What are you curious about?
  • Read: academic research; newspapers; professional organization websites; blogs
  • Keep a journal: write down ideas; relevant topics from current events, coursework, personal life

Finding a Thesis Supervisor/Advisor

  • Talk to your current professors about topics
  • Review faculty bios on the department website
  • Discuss your ideas; seek input; broaden or narrow possibilities

Select Thesis Supervisory Committee Members

  • Minimum of two additional faculty; okay to have four total; 2/3 must be Kinesiology faculty
  • Confer additional faculty selection with Thesis Advisor
  • What are their expertise or skills? What content knowledge would they offer to your thesis topic? Are they knowledgeable about a particular methodology? Do you have a good working relationship with them?

Submit Appointment of Supervisory Committee Form

  • As soon as your committee has been formed, submit the Appointment of Supervisory Committee Form   form to the Graduate College.
  • Must be submitted, no later than the time you file the Application for Admission to Candidacy which is one semester before the semester you intend to graduate. For example, early November for a May graduation or early April for a December graduation.

Begin working on thesis proposal.

Visit the Graduate College Thesis and Dissertation Information (via Graduate Student Success Center, GSSC) 

  • Enroll in KINES 688 Proposal the semester you are working on and plan to propose your thesis
  • Download the Thesis Template from the GSSC at the start of the writing process
  • Traditional Format includes Chapters 1 – 3 (Introduction, Literature Review, Methods)

* Determine with your thesis advisor/committee if you will be completing a traditional format (Chapters 1-5) or Non-Traditional ‘multi-paper’ format.

Proposal Defense Planning Instructions

  • Thesis Advisor approves thesis proposal document and go-ahead to schedule proposal defense
  • Confer with your committee a date/time to propose, then reserve a room in the Bronco Gym building with Kevin Blume ( [email protected] ). Typically, we reserve the room for two hours so that you have time to set-up before the defense and plenty of time afterward for discussion with your committee. 
  • Prepare thesis proposal announcement using the sample form 
  • Submit formal proposal document (e.g., cover page, table of contents, page numbers, headings, references) to committee TWO WEEKS prior to scheduled proposal defense
  • Submit digital Proposal Announcement and copy of proposal to the KINES Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC) to be distributed to all Graduate Faculty and Graduate Students.
  • Review Thesis Proposal Grading Form (contact GPC for a copy)

The thesis proposal grading form is a guide for your committee to assess your document and presentation, and to provide feedback. This form should also give you a sense of the expectations concerning your proposal document and presentation.

Thesis Proposal Day

  • Plan for a 15-20 minute oral presentation to committee and invited public
  • Plan for 5-10 minutes Q&A from audience & committee
  • General audience and the student will leave the room after Q&A; the committee will confer privately
  • Student is then invited back in to discuss the proposal, any necessary changes, and next steps.
  • Thesis Advisor/committee may complete a Thesis Proposal Grading Form and/or Thesis Proposal Contract ( these are internal documents; contact GPC for copies ).

Most likely, your committee will have suggested or required changes to your proposed thesis research.  The thesis contract will be authored by your thesis advisor (if one is needed) and would include any required and/or recommended changes to your planned research by the committee. 

  • Once the proposal is approved, the IRB application should be submitted for review (if needed).

Completing Thesis

  • Data Collection: The timing of data collection will be dependent upon IRB approval (if needed) and will vary from student to student. Be sure to plan appropriately for participant recruitment and data collection processes. If this occurs over the summer the student must communicate this timeline to thesis advisor and committee members.
  • Data Analysis: Working in conjunction with your thesis advisor, you will analyze collected data.
  • Write Chapters 4 & 5 (Results & Discussion) in consultation with your thesis advisor/committee

Early-Mid Semester 4 (for May graduation)

Preparing for thesis defense.

  • Thesis Advisor approves thesis document and go-ahead to schedule defense
  • Confer with your committee a date/time, then reserve a room in the Bronco Gym building with Kevin Blume ( [email protected] ). Typically, we reserve the room for two hours so that you have time to set-up before the defense and plenty of time afterward for discussion with your committee. 
  • Prepare thesis defense announcement using the sample form 
  • Review the  Thesis and Dissertation Information  provided by the Graduate Student Success Center (GSSC). Specifically you’ll find Preparing for Your Oral Defense and Required Supporting Documents List helpful at this stage in the process. Here you will find necessary forms to have completed prior to your defense and others you’ll need after the defense.
  • Complete the Graduate Defense Notification Form (refer to the GSSC site) 2 weeks in advance. 
  • Provide a complete copy of your thesis document (e.g., cover page, table of contents, page numbers, headings, references) to your committee (2 weeks in advance of the scheduled defense date)
  • Submit a digital Proposal Announcement and copy of completed thesis document to the GPC to be distributed to all Graduate Faculty and Graduate Students.
  • Complete and submit Graduate Defense Notice for Graduate College
  • Defend by mid-semester to graduate at the end of semester, e.g., early for May graduation. See Thesis and Dissertation Deadline Dates to ensure graduation date.
  • Other deadlines associated with submitting document for review; final document
  • The thesis defense grading form is a guide for your committee to assess your document and presentation, and to provide feedback. This form should also give you a sense of the expectations concerning your thesis document and presentation.

Thesis Defense Day

  • Bring a copy of the Defense Committee Approval Page to your defense. Refer to the Preparing for your thesis of Dissertation Defense page for more information and a template to follow.
  • Plan for a 20 minute oral presentation to committee and invited public
  • The thesis Advisor/committee will complete the Thesis Defense Grading Form (this is an internal document; contact GPC for a copy) and the Defense Committee Approval form
  • Student is then invited back in to discuss any necessary changes before submitting advisor-approved copy with signed approval forms, per Graduate College requirements & deadlines .

**Note There are two deadlines for final submission of the thesis document. The first deadline listed is established for the graduate college to review and format your document. You must have defended and completed all final edits/feedback from your advisor/committee, included approval forms and checklists. The second deadline is the FINAL-FINAL version submission to the Graduate College.
