Mudit Chhikara

CBSE Class 12 Physics Exam 2024 Important Questions: The Central Board of Secondary Education is the largest and one of the most prestigious school boards in India, and millions of students are currently enrolled in it. The annual CBSE Exams are of utmost importance for the students, and the next paper will be of Physics on 4 March. Physics is a compulsory subject in CBSE Class 12 science stream and is essential for both medical and non-medical science stream students. The subject also demands immense practice, especially the important topics for class 12 Physics, like optics and electromagnetics. There will be five sections in the 2024 CBSE Class 12 Physics exam, and the last section E will comprise two case study-based questions of 5 marks. These questions are very important from the exam point of view, and you can read the solved versions here.

CBSE Physics Class 12 Syllabus 2024

CBSE Class 12   Physics   Unit Wise Marks Distribution 2024

Why for case study questions are beneficial for class 12 physics .

Physics is no walk in the park. It is a mind-boggling subject that’s on par with mathematics for non-medical stream students. However, physics is challenging for all students due to its conceptual and numerical-based nature. Physics requires a clear understanding of the fundamentals, memorisation of several formulas, derivations and expert calculation skills plus the ability to apply them to tricky questions. All this requires practice but not blind practice. You must know which topics are important and which chapters are frequently asked in the exam.

CBSE Physics Previous Year Question Paper Class 12

Important Questions For Class 12   Physics   CBSE Board

Ques. 1  An ammeter and a voltmeter are connected in series to a battery with an emf   of 10V.   When a certain resistance is connected in parallel with the voltmeter, the reading of the   voltmeter decreases three times, whereas the reading of the   ammeter increases two times.

Answer: (2) 2V

Answer: (3) 3 ohm

  • None of the above

Answer: (1) 3/5 ohm

Ques. 2 Given figure shows a metal rod PQ resting on the smooth rails AB and positioned between the poles of a permanent magnet. The rails, the rod, and the magnetic field are in three mutual perpendicular directions. A galvanometer G connects the rails through a switch K. Length of the rod = 15 cm, B = 0.50 T, resistance of the closed loop containing the rod = 9.0 mΩ. Assume the field to be uniform.

(a) Suppose K is open and the rod is moved with a speed of 12 cm s-1 in the direction shown. Give the polarity and magnitude of the induced emf. Physics / XII (2020-21)

(b) Is there an excess charge built up at the ends of the rods when K is open? What if K is closed?

(c) With K open and the rod moving uniformly, there is no net force on the electrons in the rod PQ even though they do experience magnetic force due to the motion of the rod. Explain.

(d) What is the retarding force on the rod when K is closed?

(e) How much power is required (by an external agent) to keep the rod moving at the same speed (=12 cm/ sec) when K is closed? How much power is required when K is open?

(f) How much power is dissipated as heat in the closed circuit? What is the source of this power?

(g) What is the induced emf in the moving rod if the magnetic field is parallel to the rails instead of being perpendicular?

(a) EMF = vBL = 0.12 0.50 x 0.15 = 9.0 mV; P positive end and Q negative end.

(b) Yes. When K is closed, the excess charge is maintained by the continuous flow of current.

(c) Magnetic force is cancelled by the electric force set-up due to the excess charge of opposite signs at the ends of the rod.

(d) Retarding force = IBL

  • e) Power expended by an external agent against the above retarding force to keep the rod moving uniformly at 12 cm s' = 75 x 10 -3 x 12 x 10 -2 = 9.0 x 10 -3  W

When K is open, no power is expended.

(f) I 2  R = 1x1x 9 x 10 -3  = 9.0 x 10 -3  W

The source of this power is the power provided by the external agent as calculated above.

g) Zero: motion of the rod does not cut across the field lines. [Note: length of Pg has been considered above to be equal to the spacing between the rails.]

Ques. 3 According to Ohm's law, the current flowing through a conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across the ends of the conductor i.e I ∝ V ⇒ V/ I = R, where R is resistance of the conductor Electrical resistance of a conductor is the obstruction posed by the conductor to the flow of electric current through it. It depends upon length, area of cross-section, nature of material and temperature of the conductor.

We can write R∝l/A or R=ρl/A

Where ρ is electrical resistivity of the material of the conductor.

(i) Dimensions of electric resistance is

(a) [ML2 T−2 A−2]

(b) [ML2T−3A−2]

(c) [M−1 L−2 T−1 A]

(d) [M−1L2T2A−1]

(ii) If 1μA current flows through a conductor when potential difference of 2 volt is applied

across its ends, then the resistance of the conductor is

(c) 1.5×105Ω

(iii) Specific resistance of a wire depends upon

(b) cross-sectional area

(d) none of these

(iv) The slope of the graph between potential difference and current through a conductor is

(a) a straight line

(c) first curve then straight line

(d) first straight line then curve

(v) The resistivity of the material of a wire 1.0 m long, 0.4 mm in diameter and having a

resistance of 2.0 ohm is

(a) 57×10−6Ωm

(b) 5.25×10−7Ωm

(c) 7.12×10−5Ωm

(d) 2.55×10−7Ωm

Now, ρ = RA/ l = 2×4π×10−8/ 1 = 2.55×10−7Ωm

(ii) (b) As I = ε/ (R+r)

In first case, I = 0.5 A; R = 12 Ω

0.5 = ε/ (12+r) ⇒ ε = 6.0 + 0.5 r ....(i)

In second case I = 0.25 A; R=25 Ω

ε = 6.25 + 0.25 r ...(ii)

From equation (i) and (ii), r = 1 Ω

(iv) (a) Current in the circuit I= ε/ (R+r)

Power delivered to the resistance R is P = I2R = E2R/ (R+r)2

It is maximum when dP/ dR = 0

dP/ dR = E2[(r+R)2−R(r+R)]/ (r+R)4 = 0

or (r+R)2 = 2R(r+R) or R = r

(v) (b) For first case, ε/ (R+r) = 10/ R ...(i)

For second case, ε/ (5R+r) = 30/ 5R

Dividing (i) by (ii), we get r = 5R

CBSE Case Study Questions Class 12 Physics Atoms

Case study 1:

Each element is having specific properties as it emits or shows the specific emission spectrum of radiation. The emission line spectrum has bright lines on the dark surface. The hydrogen spectrum consist of series namely Balmer, Lyman, Paschen, Brackett and Pfund series. The Lyman series is formed in the ultraviolet region while Paschen, Brackett and Pfund series are in the infrared region. According to Bohr’s first postulate, electrons are revolving in particular stable orbits without radiating any form of energy. And in his second postulate he told that, these electrons are revolving around the nucleus in stable orbits which are having angular momentum equal to integral multiple of h/2π. And third postulate tells us that, when electron jumps from higher energy state to lower energy state it will emits some amount of energy and which is equal to the energy difference between those energy levels.

And he gave the energy of an electron in an hydrogen atom as

En = -13.6/ n 2 eV

The negative sign shows that electron is tightly bound with the nucleus. And when n = 1, then corresponding energy of electron is called as ground state energy. Bohr’s model is only applicable to single electron system like hydrogen and it cannot be applicable to helium atom also which is having two electrons.

Q 1.) In hydrogen atom, the ground state energy is given by___

a) +13.6 eV

c) -13.6 KJ

d) -13.6 eV

Q 2.) According to Bohr’s second postulate, the angular momentum L is given by

b) L = nh/2π

c) L = 2π/h

d) L = 2π/ nh

Q 3.) What is the shortest wavelength in the Balmer series

a) 656.3 nm

b) 364.6 nm

c) 656.3 mm

d) 364.6 mm

Q 4.) What are the Ha, H B and Hv lines in the emission spectrum of hydrogen atom?

Q 5.) Give the Balmer’s formula?

Answer key:

Q 1.) d) -13.6 eV

Q 2.) b) L = nh/2π

Q 3.) b) 364.6 nm

Q 4.) In Balmer series, the line having longest wavelength 656.3 nm which is red in colour is called as Ha line. Then next line with wavelength 486.1 nm in the blue green colour is called as H B line. And the third line with wavelength 434.1 nm in the violet colour is called as Hv line.

Q 5.) The Balmer’s formula is given by

1/wavelength = R*( 1/2 2 – 1/n 2 )

Where n = 3, 4, 5,…

Case study 2:

Electrons are revolving around the nucleus in particular stable orbits. The energy of the electron is increasing as we go from the orbit closer to nucleus to outer side. The ground state energy is the lowest energy and it is -13.6 eV for hydrogen atom. Thus, the minimum amount of energy required to remove or free the electron from the ground state is the ionisation energy and it has value +13.6 eV. When electrons jumps from higher energy orbit to lower energy orbit emits energy in the form of photons which are in the form of spectral lines and called as emission lines. The light emitted by the ordinary source of light consist of different wavelength. But the laser light is the monochromatic one which emits light of single wavelength. In case of hydrogen atom, the ground state energy is that energy state for which n = 1. And the states for which n > 1, all are the excited states. Where n shows the principal quantum number.

Q 1.) In hydrogen atom, the energy corresponding to principal quantum number n =2 is___

a) -13.6 eV

c) +13.6 eV

Q 2.) For ground state of hydrogen atom the value of principal quantum number is___

d) n = infinity

Q 3.) The minimum energy required to remove the electron from the ground state of the hydrogen atom is called as___

a) excitation energy

b) ionisation energy

c) ground state energy

d) excited state energy

Q 4.) The acronym LASER stands for?

Q 5.) If n = infinity then what is the energy of the state and what does it means?

Q 1.) b) -3.4 eV

Q 2.) c) n = 1

Q 3.) b) ionisation energy

Q 4.) The acronym LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

Q 5.) When the principal quantum number n = infinity then the corresponding state is having energy 0 eV. And this energy of atom is possible only when electron is totally removed from the nucleus and hence it goes to rest.

Here, we have provided case-based/passage-based questions for Class 12 Physics  Chapter 6 Electromagnetic Induction

Case Study/Passage-Based Questions

Case Study 1: Currents can be induced not only in conducting coils but also in conducting sheets or blocks. Current is induced in solid metallic masses when the magnetic flux threading through them changes. Such currents flow in the form of irregularly shaped loops throughout the body of the metal. These currents look like eddies or whirlpools in water so they are known as eddy currents. Eddy currents have both undesirable effects and practically useful applications. For example, it causes unnecessary heating and wastage of power in electric motors, dynamos, and in the cores of transformers. (I) The working of speedometers of trains is based on

Answer: (b) eddy currents

(ii) Identify the wrong statement

Answer: (a) Eddy currents are produced in a steady magnetic field

(v) Eddy currents can be used to heat localized tissues of the human body. This branch of medical therapy is called

Answer: (c) Inductothermy

Case Study 2: Self Induction. When a current I flows through a coil, the flux linked with it is φ = LI, where L is a constant known as the self-inductance of the coil.

case study questions class 12 physics chapter 12

Any change in current sets up an induced emf in the coil. Thus, the self-inductance of a coil is the induced emf set up in it when the current passing through it changes at the unit rate. It is a measure of the opposition to the growth of the decay of current flowing through the coil. Also, the value of self-inductance depends on the number of turns in the solenoid, its area of cross-section, and the permeability of its core material.

(i) The inductance in a coil plays the same role as (a) inertia in mechanics (b) energy in mechanics (c) momentum in mechanics (d) force in mechanics

Answer: (a) inertia in mechanics

(ii) A current of 2.5 A flows through a coil of inductance 5 H. The magnetic flux linked with the coil is (a) 0.5 Wb (b) 12.5 Wb (c) zero (d) 2 Wb

Answer: (b) 12.5 Wb

The inductance L of a solenoid depends upon its radius R as (a) L ∝ R (b) L ∝ 1/R (c) L ∝ R 2 (d) L ∝ R 3

Answer: (c) L ∝ R2

(iv) The unit of self-inductance is

(a) Weber ampere (b) Weber -1  ampere (c) Ohm second (d) Farad

Answer: (c) Ohm second

(v) The induced emf in a coil of 10 henry inductance in which current varies from 9 A to 4 A in 0.2 second is (a) 200 V (b) 250 V (c) 300 V (d) 350 V

Case Study Questions for Class 12 Physics Chapter 14 Semiconductor Electronics

Question 1:

Light Emitting Diode: It is a heavily doped p-n junction which under forward bias emits spontaneous radiation. The diode is encapsulated with a transparent cover so that emitted light can come out. When the diode is forward biased, electrons are sent from n → p (where they are minority carriers) and holes are sent from p → n (where they are minority carriers). At the junction boundary, the concentration of minority carriers increases as compared to the equilibrium concentration (i.e., when there is no bias). Thus at the junction boundary on either side of the junction, excess minority carriers are there which recombine with majority carriers near the junction. On recombination, the energy is released in the form of photons. Photons with energy equal to or slightly less than the band gap are emitted. When the forward current of the diode is small, the intensity of light emitted is small. As the forward current increases, intensity of light increases and reaches a maximum. Further increase in the forward current results in decrease of light intensity. LED’s are biased such that the light emitting efficiency is maximum. The V-I characteristics of a LED is similar to that of a Si junction diode. But, the threshold voltages are much higher and slightly different for each colour. The reverse breakdown voltages of LED’s are very low, typically around 5 V. So care should be taken that high reverse voltages do not appear across them. LED’s that can emit red, yellow, orange, green and blue light are commercially available.

Read the above case/passage and answer the following questions:

(i) LED is a: (a) lightly doped p-n junction diode. (b) heavily doped p-n junction diode. (c) moderately doped p-n junction diode. (d) two back to back p-n junction diode.

(ii) LED emits light: (a) when reversed biased. (b) when forward biased. (c) when forward or reverse biased. (d) when heated.

(iii) During recombination at the junction, emitted photons have: ( a) energy equal to or slightly less than the band gap. (b) energy greater than the band gap. (c) energy which has no relation with the band gap. (d) very low energy compared to band gap.

(iv) Threshold voltage of LED is: (a) lower compared to other p-n junction diodes and slightly different for each colour. (b) lower compared to other p-n junction diodes and same for all colours. (c) higher compared to other p-n junction diodes and same for all colours. (d) higher compared to other p-n junction diodes and slightly different for each colour.

(v) The reverse breakdown voltages of LED’s are: (a) very low and typically around 0.5 V. (b) very high and typically around 50 V. (c) very low and typically around 5 V. (d) very low and typically around 0.05 V.
