I am reluctant to travel, though I love to look at lovely natural sights. I am not very fond of companions and have very few close friends. As a student, I take examinations earnestly. I may not love it, but I don’t dislike it. Indeed, I like other students, am made of my own likes and dislikes.

I like the games- cricket and football alike. While playing I do not feel hungry or tired. I think I can play all the day. I like to meet my friends very often. I also like travelling by train. I enjoyed some pleasant journeys with my parents. I enjoy collecting pictures of great players from newspapers. I keep a number of pictures of various poses of the same person. Among foods I prefer sweets to meat.

Unfortunately, I dislike early rising. My love for the morning dose of sleep is deep. When I sit down to study I dislike the textbooks. They seem to be so dull. I dislike my elders being always after me because of my studies. Whenever I read a storybook my mother is there to tell me to take up a textbook. Above all I dislike exams. I feel that the student life would have been a heaven if there were no exams.

Introduction:.

Every mortal being has his likings and disliking that are determined by his social and cultural background. I have also my personal likes and dislikes.

First of all, I have a great love for nature. I feel a closeness with nature. Nature can be a true friend and real guide of a man. It never deceives a person who loves her. I always feel eager to go and enjoy steep hills, greenery of the open valleys, cool breeze, and sweet chirping of the birds. Visit to these places, always has a soothing effect on my mind.

Secondly, I like simple people with hearty smiles. Complexities of urban life and plastic smiles of the urbanites bore me. So sometimes I visit the countryside to meet the country folk. There, come in contact with simple and straightforward people.

My favorite pastime is reading novels. A novel presents a pen-picture of life, society or the characters around us. The picture may be drawn from real life or from imagination. But this is seen through the prism of the writer’s mind. Novels have an educative value. They give us an insight into the men and manners, the habits and customs, the passions and prejudices of the people around us.

Fourthly, I love my country. I cherish a desire to visit my country so that I can acquire knowledge of the people, their ways of living, and their culture. The rich heritage of India can be known only if we visit the villages.

Last but not the least, I love my sweet home. To me, the sweetest heaven is home. I live in a house where my caring mom, papa, my elder sister, and my faithful companion pet dog Jim live. I like my elder sister who is my friend, philosopher, and guide. She is very helpful and understands me better than anyone else. All these things are the essence of my life and existence.

But there are certain things that dislike. Firstly, dislike anybody’s casual approach to their essential duties. Staunch devotion to duties is the true religion of man.

Secondly, I do not like to brood over past misdeeds and failures. I do not like daydreaming over future, I always live in the present moment.

Thirdly, I dislike the corrupt and dishonest politicians. I believe that the contemporary world is shorn of great statesmen.

“School SUX !”

We’ve all heard it and some of us have felt it. It’s such a common sentiment that parents and teachers might be tempted to dismiss it. After all, school is good for you! Like vegetables. It is something you have to have, whether you like it or not.

But does the intrinsic “good” and compulsory nature of school education mean we should ignore students who say they don’t like it? Or that we shouldn’t try to make it more palatable?

Feeling positive about school is associated with higher attendance , better classroom adjustment and engagement , and higher academic achievement .

Students don’t have to love school to experience these benefits. Even those who like school will dislike aspects of it: subjects they aren’t good at, having to get up early, lack of tuckshop options, and so on.

But, for some students, dislike for school can become pervasive – they dislike almost everything about it.

Some of these students may drop out of school, which has serious implications for their future job prospects, financial security and quality of life. So, yes, it matters a great deal if students don’t like school and it’s important to know why , so we can do something about it.

How did we research dislike for school?

Our recent study investigated associations between school liking and factors that previous research suggests make students more likely to stay in school or leave: teacher support , connectedness to school , and the use of detentions, suspensions and expulsions.

Our aim was to learn how we might be able to improve schooling from the perspective of students who like it the least. We surveyed 1,002 students in grades 7-10 from three complex secondary schools. These are the grades and types of schools with the highest suspension and lowest retention rates.

We wanted to find out how these students feel about school and teachers, as well as their experiences of exclusionary discipline, and whether there were important differences between those who said they did and did not like school.

What did we find?

The good news is that two-thirds of our study sample said they like school. Almost half of these students said they had always liked it. One of them said:

“Love it. I’d prefer to live at school. Like, if Hogwarts was an actual place, I’d go there.”

Worryingly, one-third of students said they do not like school. Although school liking was highest in grade 7, most students indicated their dislike began in the transition to high school.

“Yeah, it was probably as soon as I hit high school. Year 7 things got a lot harder.”

This dislike appears to increase over time, with grade 9 having the highest proportion of dislikers. These patterns correspond with suspension rates, which double in grade 7 and peak in grade 9 .

What do students like and dislike most?

Our suspicion that students in these two groups like and dislike different things about school proved correct. While “friends” was the most-liked aspect of school for both groups, a much higher proportion of school likers than dislikers chose “learning”.

“I feel like every day I go to school, I just flex my knowledge. I like to learn. Learning’s alright.”

By contrast, a much higher proportion of dislikers chose “breaktime” as their most-liked aspect. The attraction became clearer through interviews:

“What do you like most about school?” […] “Break. So I get to see my friends.”

A similar pattern emerged for the least-liked aspects of school. A much higher proportion of dislikers than likers selected schoolwork, teachers and discipline policy as the aspects they disliked most.

“Pretty much work, because they give you all the assessments and expect it to be done so quick […]”

These findings are fairly intuitive and resonate with previous research with students with a history of disruptive behaviour who also nominated schoolwork and teachers.

The previous study found an interesting connection between the two. Students who find learning difficult will often clash with teachers whose job it is to make them do their work. Some teachers are kinder and more supportive in how they do that than others.

High school is especially difficult for these students because they have to navigate more teachers and are not good at “code-switching” to meet diverse rules and expectations.

“It was hard because you go from having a teacher the whole term who would let you do stuff and then if you tried to do that in another class, it would just be like no, you can’t do that. Yeah, and they just yell at you.”

Students who clash with teachers also tend also to experience exclusionary discipline. In our sample, not liking school was significantly associated with having received a detention, suspension or expulsion in the past 12 months. Forty-one percent of dislikers reported having been suspended (versus 14% of likers).

Our analyses also found large differences in students’ ratings of teacher support. Dislikers provided lower ratings on every item.

The highest-rated item for both groups was: “My teacher always wants me to do my best.” The lowest was: “My teacher has time for me.” The largest difference between groups was for “My teacher listens to me.”

What can schools do?

Relationships between teachers and students can be improved and educators do not have to wait for governments to act. A simple start would be for school leaders to implement student-driven school change to address issues from the perspective of all students, but especially those who say they least want to be there.

As for government policy, the findings from our study highlight one possibility for consideration. When Queensland shifted grade 7 from the primary phase to the secondary phase in 2015, steps were takens to better support children in their first year of high school. Support included a core teacher model, when one teacher takes the same students for English and humanities or maths and science, reducing the number of teachers that students have to navigate, and dedicated play areas for grade 7 students to help reduce anxiety.

The findings from our study of three Queensland secondary schools suggest that initiative may have had some success for up two-thirds of grade 7 students at least. Yet, if school liking declines in grades 8 and beyond, mirroring the rise in suspensions, is it not time to consider whether grade 8s and 9s may benefit from more intensive pastoral care?

The difference exists owing to how we all think and therefore we have our own likes and dislikes. One major area of difference in our thinking comes from our origin, family background, and climatic conditions of the place where we live. Likes and dislikes also give insight into a person’s inner self and reveal things about their personality. These traits also tell people about one’s character, disposition, and temperament. I also have a few likes and dislikes that I will discuss in this essay.

Every person has their own likes and dislikes in life. Liking something while avoiding others can reveal many things about our personality. It shows what we think, what we approve of, and what we will never try in real life. People’s likes and dislikes depend upon their family background, the place where they live, climatic conditions, and priorities. Once people start to know what they like or dislike, things can start becoming easier. In this essay, I will discuss my likes and dislikes as a teenager in the following pages.

My life has been quite peaceful because of the ability to understand situations, factors, and things that I like and dislike. I usually avoid things and the types of people whom I know will cause trouble for me. On the other hand, I give first priority to situations I am comfortable working in. Because of this ability, I am also able to learn what people around me like and dislike. This means I don’t do things my parents, siblings, and friends dislike which helps me have a good relationship with all of them. Despite all this, the world doesn’t work as you desire and life isn’t fair. I still run into situations that I hate and just destroy my peace of mind.

Talking about my likes, when it comes to people I like optimistic people. I like them because they are hopeful and confident and no matter what happens they remain positive about life. I am not saying that they never get mad, annoyed, or hurt, it’s just that they always see the positive side in people. Based on people’s habits, I like extroverts, not introverts. I am an introvert myself but I don’t like being an introvert. The thing I hate the most about introverts is they keep things to themselves. Keeping everything to themselves and not sharing it with anyone can destroy peace of mind. Other than people here’s a list of what else I like.

  • I like to travel around. I want to visit all the famous places in the world.
  • I like nature because nature is always refreshing and adds to the beauty of every other thing.
  • I like to go out with my friends and college fellows
  • I like to spend most of my time online. Platforms like Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram.
  • I like to fit in socially no matter if it’s some sports, classroom work, or party. I hate it when I can’t fit in.

Other than the likes, I also have many dislikes which tend to separate me from some people. I do not like the hypocrisy in people, I admire those who are men of action rather than words. It is ugly when people around you pretend to like you on your face and bite you behind your back. Like other people, I also dislike real-life problems, frustrations, and sorrows. Not being able to share personal problems makes them more difficult to handle.

I also dislike people who are too proud and look at others as inferior or low. Being proud of one’s own success is not bad, but I hate it when people rate others based on their wealth and status. Other than these, here are some more things I don’t like.

Things That I Do Not Like (My Dislikes)

  • I hate being forced to do things I don’t want to. Parents/ caretakers need to know when it’s time to stop telling people what to do.
  • I hate being compared with other teenagers no matter how good or bad they are. It’s because I have my own personality and I am unique in my own way.
  • I don’t like people who smoke because they not only destroy their own health but also harm people around them.
  • I hate body shaming anyone or commenting on someone’s caste, color, or creed.
  • I hate being inconsistent. Everyone should be responsible and consistent enough to perform their daily duties.
  • I hate everyone who is unappreciative of someone’s achievement because of jealousy.

In conclusion, everyone has their likes and dislikes and no one should be judged based on that. Research papers show that things people like or hate tell them about their personality. In my opinion, people need to know and respect other people’s likes and dislikes to make this world a better place to live.

Same inconsistency with my diet, my gym, even my relationship with my friends and teachers. I become mad at myself for being like that and regret it every time but I can’t help it.

In conclusion, none of us is perfect and we all have imperfections. Rather than being mad at yourself about things you don’t like about yourself or others we all should look at the positive side. If you are optimistic and positive about things then soon you will start to like everything.

School is something that, here in America, we as students appreciate and try not to take for granted, as we know that others in different countries would go to extremes for the opportunity of receiving a good education. 19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

I like to wear red colored clothes often. My favourite TV show is “Just for Laughs” because I find this show very funny. I love pets. My favourite pet is dog. I like the miniature snouzer a lot because they are well behaved dogs. Gymnastics is my favourite sport. I am doing it since 5 years. I have also attended many events for the same. My favourite kind of music is country music.

I have many dislikes too. When I talk about my dislikes I like to talk about the color I hate the most, TV shows that makes me sick, movies that I hate, pets that I hate, foods that I avoid to eat etc. Generally I like all the colors except brown because I find it very dull, dark & nasty.

I never wear anything in brown and I never choose brown color for anything. The TV show which I hate the most is “Flying colors” because according to me this title does not suit the show. This stories they show does not relate to real life situations neither they makes any sense & they even fail to entertain the audiences.

This game is boring as well as stupid. I hate cats because I don’t find them friendly at all. I would never keep cats as pets and would never suggest someone I know. I eat all kinds of vegetarian and non vegetarian food because I am very foodie but I hate peas a lot. I always avoid eating peas because when we eat it it squishes inside the mouth and I hate that feeling.

Talking about likes and dislikes in English

There’s a whole range of English expressions you can use to talk about how much you like or dislike something.

If you love something

“I love eating ice-cream.”

“I adore sun-bathing.”

“She’s mad about that new boy band.”

“He’s crazy about that girl.”

If you like something a lot

“She’s fond of chocolate.”

“I like swimming very much.”

“He really likes that new golf course.” (Remember to stress “really” in this sentence.)

If you like something

“He quite likes going to the cinema.”

“I like cooking.”

If you neither like nor dislike something

“I don’t mind doing the housework.”

In reply to a question if you like something or not, you can say: “ I don’t really care either way .” “ It’s all the same to me .”

If you don’t like something

“She doesn’t like cooking very much.”

“He’s not very fond of doing the gardening.”

“He’s not a great fan of football.”

“Horse-riding isn’t really his thing .”

“I dislike wasting time.”

If you really dislike something

“I don’t like sport at all .”

Things to remember

Dislike is quite formal.

Fond of is normally used to talk about food or people.

The ‘oa’ in loathe rhymes with the ‘oa’ in boat .

Grammar Note

To talk about your general likes or dislikes, follow this pattern: like something or like doing something.

Remember that “I’d like…” is for specific present or future wishes. “I like swimming” = I like swimming generally. “I’d like to go swimming this afternoon” = I want to go swimming at a specific time in the future.

Common mistake

Be careful where you put very much or a lot . These words should go after the thing that you like.

For example, “I like reading very much.” NOT “I like very much reading.”

Schools are essential parts of people's lives. I am going to talk about my alma mater, Al-Basrah Pharmacy College; because , I already graduated from the college and I had a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy. My pharmacy college was the first official pharmacy college founded and suited in the city of Al-Basrah, Iraq. At that time, I was among the first generation who graduated from it. I studied in it about five years and; of course; there were several things I liked and disliked while I was a student there. Following are few of them.

To begin, I am going to describe the building and the location of the college which are the two things I did not like at that time. First, the university used at 2001 a temporary old high school building which was pretty small and tight. The laboratory lacked the required equipment for chemical courses and pharmacology.Hence, we were seven students per each experiment and under any single mistake from one of our team, we lost the entire work and got lower grades. It happened to me several times, and it was pretty annoying to find yourself in this situation and incapable to do anything. Second, the location was in the worst area in my city. There were no subways or buses. Caps were available but very expensive and risky at the same time. I remembered at that point; I used my bike to cycle 23 miles every day to be on time for the class. So, I have to leave one hour early from my home and waste another hour going back home.

On the other hand, the five years at that college were not that worse for my peers and me. Since we were the first generation, we felt that we were responsible for raising the name of our, college so we worked hard and studied harder to attract foreign students from neighborhood countries to study and graduate with us. For example, we created several websites and posted many youtube videos about our lives there like our friendships and minor courses activities. At 2003, we have the number one best basketball team in the South universities who got the golden medals and raised the name of our pharmacy school at that time. Therefore, within couple years, several students from Iran, Qatar, and Yaman started to arrive and prefer to study and live in my city.

Also, our professors were so young at that time; they were five years elder than us. So, we felt they were our friends not our teachers. They shared us our hobbies and guided us to be the enthusiast to love the sturdy material which was tough to study. Personally, I suffered a lot from organic chemistry, but my teacher encouraged me to work in his pharmacy and showed me the importance to understand the chemical structures of medical substances when we treat the patient.

All in all, even though my alma matter's building were inappropriate and the location were inconvienent, I liked what we did as students for our college and the assistant of our teachers at that time.

My school is the same way! Currently getting in a couple of last glances at some good ol' DA. I swear, the woman who makes the schedules at our school does such a poor job- Literally, the entire month of september, we had nothing going on, and then come October, we have 1-2 final exams a week. I feel your pain mah brotha! It's really funny how she doesn't give two cares either. I remember during orientation week she showed up to the introductions wearing wrinkled cotton army-print capris and flip flops. Certainly a great first impression. My school has it's pros and cons; It's in a pretty academic/hospital-like setting, and has a couple good profs. The financial aid officer is EXTREMELY knowledgable, and the school provides notes, audio recordings, and free tutors. I just don't like that there are some profs that are completely imcompetent at times- we had a guest lecturer from the PhD portion of our school literally google something in front of the entire class! You've read my other rant though lol.

I don't always Go Blue, but when I do...

Exams stacked on quizzes stacked on practicals has been my experience. Does it suck? Yes, but it's nothing close to an impossible work load. We just put our big boy (or girl) pants on and deal with it. If you must get As I feel bad for you, son. I got 99 problems, but a specialty ain't one.

dental school is an enema...just let it happen and then get on with it  

We just had 14 tests in a month period. Does that make me not like dental school? Nah, it's what we all competed for and knew we were getting into. I don't like paying $70,000 in tuition and having some rude staff/professors and their priority being on their research or pet projects. I like that the curriculim is changing this year, however, that results in some disorganization. I am worried about getting patients in a few years, and I dislike how much ethics we have.  

I wouldn't say I dislike anything, so far at least. Every school has office/scheduling/being on time type of problems, but nothing we can really do about that.

Likes: - Biomedical science professors that teaches well and are nice to students - Upper class men that are always willing to mentor us first years - Dean of Student Affairs that is always there to accommodate student concerns - Helpful support staff (sim lab custodians, clinic assistants, administrative assistants) Dislikes: - Campus has no library and cafeteria in addition to being in a high-crime area; Leaving the campus at night even with the presence of campus police is not very safe - Expensive tuition fee but we have to fight for study rooms, wet lab supplies, etc. - Filler classes that are not hard but takes up a lot of time that could have been used to finish sim lab projects or study - MEAN clinical professors - Exam change requires YES vote of the entire class - Professors that are concern with minor details of our appearance (must wear solid colored long socks at the sim lab, etc.) but do not know how to teach right

Essay on My Likes and Dislikes

Have recently been promoted from the Primary to class VI and now am in the Middle school. I am quite excited to be in the new grade.

I have been counseled by my teachers to be respectful to my seniors and not to pick up a fight with them because in the middle school we would be the junior most. In the Primary we were the senior most class hence we were looked upon by our juniors.

We were also told that some seniors may try to bully us and so we must be careful. Anyway, we are ready for the new grade and look forward to the transition. On the first day, in Class VI, our teacher asked us to write about our likes and dislikes. I thought and thought and realized that there were in fact a few things which I disliked and liked.

I am a boy with very strong likes and dislikes. My parents have always to me that good people are honest, simple, and kind. Therefore, I dislike those who pretend and are artificial.

My father strongly believes that such person are like snakes who are ready to bite you behind your back. As a matter of fact, people, who are artificial, give themselves away very easily, It ism difficult to judge them because their vibes are negative and can be felt, you do not get impressed, with their hypocrisy.

Situations bring to the form their true character. My father says that one must be watchful of such people, I thus, avoid making friends who are not genuine.

I love reading books, especially fiction. I love to read Enid Blyton, Har Boys and Harry Potter. When the last book of Harry Potter was release went to the Full Circle shop at Khan Market, early in the morning, at 5,a.m. as I wanted to be the first one in my school to get my hands on those much talked about book.

Though, I am a keen reader I do not enjoy reading Newspapers at all are often scolded by my parents and teachers form keeping myself abreast with current affairs. I can not help it because I hail a very vivid imagination therefore stories and novels interest me more. Perhaps, I am a literary kind of a person.

I love playing chess and most outdoor activities in outdoor games, football the most. Somehow, I have never liked the game of cricket through all my friends are crazy about it. I also enjoy cycling and love to go on cycling expeditions.

I like to see the television but dislike watching most of the television serial. My mother and sister enjoy watching them and usually we have heated discussions on the uselessness of these ‘Sas Bahoo’ serials. I find the disgusting and a waste of time. I like seeing the Discovery channel and ESPN sports, I also like to see English movies which my sister hates; anyway this is what I am!

Nature fascinates me and every year I try to go to a hill station where I can wander in the woods away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

I dislike going to Chandni Chowk and Karol Bagh, for shopping especially with mother and sister but I do enjoy going to the Malls and do window shopping I dislike teachers, who think they are always right, those, who start yelling at you, at the drop of a hat.

Such teachers make me feel sick. Teachers, who are like your friends, are the ones, whom I respect the most. My mother always tries to explain to me that in life you have to live with all kinds of people and face many situations which may not be to your liking.

I think, when I grow up, I will learn to be more tolerant and patient. I will accept people as they are but be careful in trusting them. A piece of advice to all, you may like or dislike things, which is natural, but never have very strong likes and dislikes.

1. Talking About Things You Really Like

Justin: So, what kind of music are you into?

Stephanie: I’m a big fan of blues, classic soul , things like that. I really love Billie Holliday and a lot of stuff from that era. What about you?

J: I listen to a lot of different stuff, but what I really like is hip-hop.

S: Do you listen to music a lot at home?

J: Oh sure, all the time. My favourite thing to do at the end of a long day is put on a record and just chill out on the sofa with some good tunes.

S: Record? You mean vinyl?

J: Of course! There’s no other way to listen.

S: I wouldn’t go that far! Music makes me happy wherever I am. I can listen on my phone, at home, on vinyl, on CD. I don’t care. I just like it!

Here, you heard several useful phrases to talk about things you really like. Can you remember any of them?

If you really like something, you can say:

  • I really love…
  • I’m a big fan of…
  • What I really like is…
  • My favourite thing to do is…
  • … makes me happy

In the gap, you can put a noun, or an -ing verb . For example:

  • I really love seafood.
  • I really love swimming in the sea.

This is true for all these phrases. Look at two more:

  • I’m a big fan of 80s glam rock.
  • I’m a big fan of listening to music when I go jogging.

You can also vary some of these phrases, to make them stronger or weaker, or just to add variety. For example:

  • What I really enjoy is getting up late on a Sunday and going for coffee with friends.
  • My absolute favourite food is spicy chicken wings.
  • Doing yoga in the morning makes me feel good.

What about you? Can you make some sentences using these phrases? You can talk about music, or any other topic you like. Pause the video and write down two or three sentences, using the language from this section.

2. Talking About Mild Likes and Dislikes

J: Where shall we go? How about pizza?

S: Errgh… I’m not keen on the pizza places around here. There’s a Chinese place nearby which is supposed to be alright. Want to check it out?

J: Honestly, I don’t like Chinese food so much. I quite like Japanese food, though.

S: Are there any Japanese places around here?

J: No, don’t think so.

S: That doesn’t help then. Indian?

J: Spicy food isn’t my thing.

J: Yeah… KFC’s alright. [positive intonation] Let’s go to KFC.

S: So, we live in a town with all these great restaurants, and we’re going to KFC? Seriously?

J: What’s wrong with KFC? It’s not bad.

S: Fine, let’s go.

In this dialogue, you heard phrases to talk about low-level likes and dislikes.

If you like something, but not that much, how can you say that?

Here are the three ways you heard:

  • I quite like…
  • It’s alright.
  • It’s not bad.

The word alright doesn’t mean that something is good by itself. However, with a positive intonation, it can mean that you like something.

Again, you can use these phrases with a noun or an -ing verb, like this:

  • I quite like going for a short walk after lunch.
  • The film was alright.
  • This garlic sauce is not bad!

What if you don’t like something? What could you say?

Here are the phrases you heard in the dialogue:

  • I’m not keen on…
  • I don’t like ___ so much
  • … isn’t my thing

Let’s see how you could use them:

  • I’m not keen on horror films.
  • I don’t like going to the gym so much.
  • Getting up early isn’t my thing.

Again, you can use many of these phrases in different ways, by changing or adding words. For example:

  • I quite enjoy cycling .
  • I’m not massively keen on that plan.
  • Spending hours sitting on the beach isn’t exactly my thing.

What about you? In our dialogue, we talked about food. Can you use the language you’ve seen to make two or three sentences about yourself? You can write about food, or any other topic.

For extra practice, say your sentences out loud. Say them several times, until the pronunciation is comfortable. Try to remember them, so that you can say them without reading. This way, you’ll remember the language better.

Pause the video and write your sentences now; start again when you’re ready.

Okay, you’ve seen how to talk about things you like a lot, or things you like a little.

But what if you really don’t have an opinion about something?

3. Meh: When You Don’t Have Strong Feelings

S: What a great movie! What did you think?

J: It was okay.

S: You didn’t like it?

J: I didn’t mind it. I’ve seen better; I’ve seen worse.

S: You’re difficult to please, aren’t you? I thought it was amazing! Don’t you think he’s a great director? I really like everything he’s made.

J: I don’t have strong opinions about him.

S: So, what do you like?

J: Honestly, I haven’t seen many movies that have impressed me recently. I saw that new “Blade Runner” film.

S: And, you didn’t like it?

J: Meh… I could take it or leave it.

S: You’re annoying. Anyway, what shall we do now? Get a drink, or something to eat?

J: I’m not bothered either way, to be honest.

In that dialogue, I did not have a lot of strong feelings about, well, anything really.

Can you remember the words and phrases I used to express this?

Often, you can express this kind of idea just with a word or a gesture.

Imagine you’re watching something on TV, and someone asks you if it’s a good show or not. You can express that it’s neither good nor bad by making a ‘meh’ noise and shrugging.

However, there are also some useful phrases you can use, such as:

  • It’s okay.
  • I don’t mind…
  • I don’t have strong opinions about…
  • I can take it or leave it.
  • I’m not bothered either way about…

Like the phrases you’ve seen in other sections, you can use these with a noun or an -ing verb, except for I can take it or leave it, which is a fixed phrase, meaning that you use it as a response to someone else’s question or suggestion.

Let’s see how you could use these phrases to talk about different things:

  • The modern art museum was okay.
  • I don’t mind doing housework.
  • I don’t have strong opinions about which curtains we buy.
  • I’m not bothered either way about where we go.

When you use okay, like the word alright, a lot depends on your intonation.

The word okay literally means “not good and not bad”. However, with positive intonation, it can have a positive meaning, like quite good.

With negative intonation, it can mean something like not very good.

Listen to the difference:

  • It’s okay! [positive intonation]
  • It’s okay. [neutral intonation]
  • It’s okay. [negative/disappointed intonation]

In this way, okay can mean different things.

Also, the phrase I’m not bothered either way is more informal, and could sound rude or dismissive if you use it in the wrong situation, so think about where you are and who you’re talking to before you say it.

So, it’s your turn to practice again! Can you think of a movie or TV show that was just okay’not that good, and not that bad?

Your job is to write two or three sentences about yourself using the language from this section. If you can’t think of a movie or TV show to talk about, you can choose a different topic.

Pause the video and write your sentences now.

Okay? Finally, let’s see how you can talk about things you hate.

4. Talking About Things You Hate

J: What happened now?

S: He is the worst manager ever! I can’t stand working with him. I used to like going to work, but now I absolutely hate it! I have to find another job.

J: You know you’ve been saying that for.. Ooh… Since I met you?

S: Yeah, but this time I mean it. Even the little things are starting to drive me crazy, like the way he fidgets with his coffee cup when he talks.

J: So, have you started looking for a new job?

S: Not yet, but I will. I need a change.

J: What about your colleagues? I thought you got on well with them.

S: Some of them are alright, but I have no time for that woman in the accounts department. I really dislike the HR guy, too, whatever his name is.

J: You know, maybe you should be less negative. If you go to work with that kind of attitude, I’m not surprised you clash with people.

S: What do you mean, negative? I can’t stand people telling me what to do! What are you even talking about? I have no time for people like you and your stupid advice!

Here, you heard a lot of phrases to talk about something, or someone, you strongly dislike. Can you remember any of them?

If you really dislike something, you can say:

  • I can’t stand…
  • I absolutely hate…
  • … drives me crazy.
  • I have no time for…
  • I really dislike…

As before, you use these phrases with a noun or an -ing verb. For example:

  • I can’t stand people who cut in line.
  • I absolutely hate every song he’s ever made.
  • Walking behind someone who walks really slowly drives me crazy!

Some of these phrases are more general. You can use I can’t stand…, I absolutely hate…, or I really dislike… to talk about anything: things, people, or activities.

However, with the other two phrases, you would use them to talk about people and their habits. For example:

  • She’s always late, which drives me crazy.
  • I have no time for people who say nice things to your face, then gossip behind your back.

What about you? It’s your last practice: pause the video, and write three sentences about things you strongly dislike. Use the language from this section, and start again when you’re ready.

Video essays can be pretty neat. What do you like and dislike about them, and who are some of your favorites?

I like them for a lot of the reasons why people like podcasts. I can out on a long video in the background while doing something else, and a benefit of video essays are that they tend to more directed than certain podcasts and focus on either a single topic or a single mega topic.

By favorite essayist would probably be the Right Opinion, and despite the name seeming pretentious and one sort of stinker from him, the guy is pretty thorough and "objective" (as much as I dislike that word given how often it is misused).

One thing about video essays though is that given that the creator(s) is talking at length, there own quirks become a lot more noticable. Similarly, even when a tangent is like maybe 5% of the video, that 5% is still pretty long if the video is 8 hours long. Also, some creators can get stuck on a specific point and/or thesis and try to connect everything neatly together.

Parents, you obviously love your kids, but that doesn't mean that you love — or agree with — everything they do.

Like, maybe you found out that your child is a bully at school, and it's been a huge problem that you don't even know how to handle.

OUWB’s Afonso, Wasserman named Dean’s Distinguished Professors

Two professors from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine have each achieved the faculty rank of Dean’s Distinguished Professor. 

The Oakland University Board of Trustees approved the title changes recommended by Oakland University President Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, M.D., at its regular meeting on June 28, 2024.

Nelia Afonso, M.D., professor, and Jason Wasserman, Ph.D., professor — both from OUWB’s Department of Foundational Medical Studies — each received the title.

“This prestigious recognition is not merely a personal achievement but a testament to the collaborative efforts of our academic community,” said Afonso.

Wasserman shared similar thoughts.

“The thing that means the most to me is that it was the result of a nomination of at least 10 of my colleagues,” he said. “It’s a really nice honor.”

The rank of Dean’s Distinguished Professor was established in 2021 upon approval from the OU Provost and the OU Assistant Vice President of Academic Human Resources. It’s a permanent, honorific title that acknowledges contributions of employed, full-time, tenured faculty at the rank of professor.

According to the recommendations from Pescovitz, the designation “shall be afforded to awardees who have superior teaching skills that encompass the breadth and depth of their discipline, a distinguished record of public service, and scholarly, creative, and artistic achievements.”

‘Truly been a privilege’

Sarah Lerchenfeldt, Pharm.D., associate professor and interim co-chair, Department of Foundational Medical Studies, nominated Afonso.

In her nomination, Lerchenfeldt said Afonso “exemplifies the criteria” for the title.

“Since joining OUWB as a founding faculty member, she has demonstrated unparalleled dedication to medical education, significantly enhancing both the academic and practical aspects of these fields,” wrote Lerchenfeldt.

The nomination noted Afonso’s scholarly excellence, particularly in the domains of education, clinical skills, women’s health, and vaccine hesitancy. Lerchenfeldt said that Afonso was principal investigator for the Merck Investigator Studies program project called “Promoting Vaccine Confidence in Medical and Dental Students.” The project secured about $179,000 in funding.

The nomination also pointed to Afonso’s efforts to develop and refine the curriculum for OUWB’s Art and Practice of Medicine (APM) course, previous awards she received, commitment to service, and leadership roles with organizations like the Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education.

“Dr. Afonso’s tenure at OUWB has been marked by a commitment to advancing medical education, research, and community health,” wrote Lerchenfeldt. “Her work not only reflects the values and mission of our institution, but also sets a benchmark for academic and professional excellence.”

Afonso said it has “truly been a privilege” to receive the title.

“I have been fortunate to be part of this medical school since its inception and I am grateful for the numerous opportunities provided that have fostered my growth as a physician, educator, and researcher,” she said. “I appreciate the dedication and commitment of our faculty and staff, whose support has been instrumental in implementing various curricular innovations.”

‘Invaluable member of OUWB faculty’  

Wasserman , who joined OUWB in 2013, was nominated by a group of 10 other faculty from the Department of Foundational Medical Studies.

They called him a “prolific and influential scholar” on several topics: homelessness, clinical bioethics, and Holocaust medicine.

“His scholarship and research range from core bioethics topics, such as autonomy and informed consent, to empirical research and qualitative inquiry into homelessness and medical ethics,” they wrote, and noted that he has published three books, 12 book chapters and supplements, 64 peer-reviewed journal articles, 22 editor-reviewed articles, and seven invited articles.

“Dr. Wasserman’s extensively cited research has contributed to important debates surrounding ethics in medical education, care for homeless individuals, pediatric ethical concerns, euthanasia, the rights of patients without decision-making capacity, and immunization policy,” wrote the nominators.

They also noted Wasserman’s roles in shaping the Medical Humanities and Clinical Bioethics (MHCB) curriculum, replacing traditional essay assignments with extemporaneous self-reflection videos, development of interactive iBooks, serving as a mentor to more than 50 OUWB students for their  Embark  projects, and developing a national training course in bioethics for the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.

The nominators also mentioned Wasserman’s history of service. In 2020, he was appointed as one of only two Provost Fellows for Faculty Diversity at Oakland University. In 2022, he was honored with the OU Founder’s Day Award for Faculty Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. He also chaired the admissions committee for five years, served as director of student professionalism for nine years, co-founded  Street Medicine Oakland , launched the Center for Moral Values in Health Medicine, and more.

And he has plans to do even more, including launching a new student-led journal on ethics, humanities, and social justice, and a health care ethics debate tournament that will be open to all OU students.  

“One of the reasons I came to OUWB was because it was a new school and there was a lot of opportunity to be entrepreneurial,” he said. “I didn’t want to go to some well-established place where the expectation is you teach your courses, you write papers, and otherwise just let things run.”
