Nutrition is a critical part of health and development. Better nutrition is related to improved infant, child and maternal health, stronger immune systems, safer pregnancy and childbirth, lower risk of non-communicable diseases (such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease), and longevity.

Healthy children learn better. People with adequate nutrition are more productive and can create opportunities to gradually break the cycles of poverty and hunger.

Malnutrition, in every form, presents significant threats to human health. Today the world faces a double burden of malnutrition that includes both undernutrition and overweight, especially in low- and middle-income countries. There are multiple forms of malnutrition, including undernutrition (wasting or stunting), inadequate vitamins or minerals, overweight, obesity, and resulting diet-related noncommunicable diseases.

The developmental, economic, social, and medical impacts of the global burden of malnutrition are serious and lasting for individuals and their families, for communities and for countries.

Most recent estimates show that globally, 149.2 million children under the age of 5 years of age are stunted (too short for their age) and 45.4 million are wasted (underweight for their height).  The number of children with stunting is declining in all regions except Africa. Over three-quarters of all children suffering from severe wasting live in Asia.

Around 45% of deaths among children under 5 years of age are linked to undernutrition. These mostly occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Anaemia is a serious global public health problem that particularly affects young children and pregnant women. WHO estimates that 40% of children less than 5 years of age and 37% of pregnant women worldwide are anaemic. Thirty percent of women of reproductive age have anaemia.

Globally, 1.9 billion adults are overweight or obese and 38.9 million children under 5 years of age are overweight. Rates of childhood overweight and obesity are rising, particularly in high-income and upper-middle-income countries.

Although breastfeeding protects against undernutrition and overweight, only 44% of infants under 6 months of age are exclusively breastfed.

High sodium consumption (>5 g salt/day) contributes to high blood pressure and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Most people consume too much salt – on average 9–12 grams per day, or around twice the recommended maximum level of intake.

According to the 2016–2025 nutrition strategy, WHO uses its convening power to help set, align and advocate for priorities and policies that move nutrition forward globally; develops evidence-informed guidance based on robust scientific and ethical frameworks; supports the adoption of guidance and implementation of effective nutrition actions; and monitors and evaluates policy and programme implementation and nutrition outcomes.

This work is framed by the Comprehensive implementation plan on maternal, infant, and young child nutrition, adopted by Member States through a World Health Assembly resolution in 2012. Actions to end malnutrition are also vital for achieving the diet-related targets of the Global action plan for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases 2013–2020, the Global strategy for women’s, children’s, and adolescent’s health 2016–2030, the report of the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity (2016), and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

In May 2018, the Health Assembly approved the 13th General Programme of Work (GPW13), which guides the work of WHO in 2019–2023. Reduction of salt/sodium intake and elimination of industrially produced trans-fats from the food supply are identified in GPW13 as part of WHO’s priority actions to achieve the aims of ensuring healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

Food insecurity is one of the greatest health challenges in this country. The US Department of Agriculture reports that nearly 13.5 million households were food insecure in 2021—including 2.3 million with food insecure children. Food insecurity often stands in the way of equitable health outcomes and increases health-care spending . For children, it can hinder proper growth and the ability to learn in school.

The other harsh reality is that most of the health issues we face as a nation can be attributed to poor diet, leading to greater health risks , whereas healthy diets can help reduce risk for many chronic conditions. With food being so vital to our holistic well-being, we must all work to make healthy food accessible to more people. It’s not just about treating health problems after they appear—it’s about improving access to preventive care through nutrition, so people can stay healthy.

Research shows that households experiencing very low food security are 40 percent more likely to have a chronic disease than households that are food secure.

Health equity solutions must acknowledge this connection between diets and health outcomes. Identifying and addressing food insecurity can help prevent chronic conditions and other diet-related health issues that can lead to higher health-care costs. Health-care organizations can help enable healthy diets and prevent chronic diseases in the following ways.

Health-care companies can partner with community-based organizations or food distribution sites to increase access to food or bring nutritious food directly to people through home-delivered meals. Address the Cost Barrier to Healthy Food

Healthy food is typically more expensive than unhealthy food, and larger price differences between the two are correlated with lower odds of having a high-quality diet . Pharmacies, for example, can play a critical role in advancing Food Is Medicine. Pharmacists are seen as one of the most trusted health providers by members of their local communities. Through Food Is Medicine solutions that engage pharmacists, we can help people manage their medication and nutrition. Retail pharmacies can also play a role in addressing food insecurity by participating in programs that increase access to food, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which allows SNAP participants to pay for food using their benefits. More than 6,900 CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide participate in the program.

Vitamin K2 is essential to your health. But taking supplements isn't always safe, experts say.

Vitamin K2 is lauded for a number of important health benefits, including boosting your bones, teeth and cardiovascular system.

A new study suggests taking vitamin K2 could prevent and stall the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, though the research was conducted on mice, not humans. Past research has also shown that increasing vitamin K2 intake could lower calcium-associated health risks.

The last few years have seen a huge spike in health and wellness interest — the pandemic forced people to  grapple with their own wellbeing , and they're subsequently searching for products, such as vitamins and supplements, that are easy to purchase and implement.

Vitamin K2 is becoming one of those products. The global vitamin K2 market is expected to nearly double its current revenue in five years, spiking from $140 million this year to $265 million by 2029, according to a recent report from market research firm MarketsandMarkets.

What is vitamin K2? 

There's vitamin K1, which is found primarily in dark leafy greens and serves primarily to clot blood to prevent excess bleeding, Washington, D.C.-based dietitian  Caroline Thomason, R.D. , tells USA TODAY.

And then there's vitamin K2, which is found in meat, dairy and eggs. Its benefits include boosting bone density, cardiovascular and dental health, and also helping to regulate blood clotting.

Severe symptoms of vitamin K deficiency can include bleeding and hemorrhaging, Thomason notes. Medical experts don't see vitamin K2 deficiency as a widespread concern, though. The National Institutes of Health's Office of Dietary Supplements notes that most U.S. diets already contain an adequate amount of vitamin K.

"If you don't have a deficiency, choosing to eat a variety of foods can help you meet your vitamin and mineral needs without needing to supplement your diet," Thomason says. "If you have a deficiency or a specific health condition that can benefit from supplementing with a vitamin, it's worth exploring for better health and symptom management."

What are the disadvantages of vitamin K2?

Vitamin supplements have become trendy recommendations for wellness influencers to offer their followers, especially given the statistics about vitamin D deficiency across the U.S.. But experts warn against blindly adding supplements to your daily routine.

"Influencers (are) frequently promoting the new 'it' vitamins and making strong health claims that they attribute to their alleged supplement regimen," Thomason says. "This constant promotion creates trendy awareness but can also lead to misinformation, unnecessary supplementation and even harmful health consequences. Influencers' endorsements often prioritize trends, social engagement and popularity over scientific evidence, leading to a 'one-size-fits-all' approach and blanket statements that may not be suitable for everyone."

When it comes to adding a vitamin K2 supplement, Thomason says they're "generally safe for daily use," but stresses the importance of consulting a doctor first. Because of vitamin K's blood-clotting side effects, its vital to ensure that you don't have a health condition or take a medication that would be negatively impacted. Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also talk to a medical professional about appropriate dosing, she says.

I thought I had the flu. It was a rare reaction to a medication that almost killed me

“I think she could have SJS, though we’ll need to order a skin biopsy to confirm it,” my friend Claire heard one doctor murmur to another. After a quick Google search, we learned it was an acronym for Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a disease we had never heard of.

I whispered to Claire that SJS were my exact initials — as if it were a disease made for me. Despite the intense pain, I still managed to crack a joke. I wasn’t aware that this diagnosis would soon flip my life upside down as a healthy 20-something trying to make it in New York City.

The day before, I called an Uber to take me to an urgent care center. It was only five blocks away, but just getting downstairs from my third-floor walk-up apartment felt like an impossible feat. I was on the verge of collapsing. My mind felt foggy, and I’d had body aches and chills for three days that prevented me from sleeping for longer than 10-minute bouts. Advil and Tylenol hadn’t helped.

After negative COVID, flu and strep tests, the doctor ultimately determined that I likely just had a new strand of the flu that tests couldn’t detect. I was young and healthy, so, despite how incredibly sick I felt, surely nothing was terminally wrong with me. The doctor prescribed me a course of amoxicillin to curb my mysterious illness . I went home and took the first (and only) dose that evening — of a medication I had been prescribed many times before — but the next day I woke up in even worse condition, in an intense, feverish panic.

The doctor determined I likely just had a new strand of the flu ... I was young and healthy, so despite how incredibly sick I felt, surely nothing was terminally wrong with me.

My thermometer now read 107 degrees and the pain throughout my body was unbearable. I was in fight-or-flight mode, and the next few hours that passed were a complete blur. I took another Uber back to that same urgent care center, tearfully begging for help. They referred me to an emergency room in the Financial District, so I took yet another Uber there.

Unbeknownst to me, a rash began to form on my body. It started as small speckles on my forearms and cheeks, and within a few hours, it erupted into massive blisters from my head to my lower torso. My best friends, Claire and Pablo, arrived at the ER later that afternoon after work and class, taking turns to be with me since only one guest was allowed in the room at a time. While rotating every hour, they overheard in the hallway that I would need to be transported to the Weill Cornell Medicine burn center on the Upper East Side immediately.

Claire accompanied me on the ambulance ride to the intensive care unit, which would end up being my new home for the next month. My eyelids had crusted over by this point, making my vision go totally dark for several months thereafter. Throughout that first night in the ICU, I was probed and prodded as several doctors took multiple biopsies from my left arm and placed a catheter into my bladder.  My bodily systems were rapidly failing me. More sores developed down my throat and into my lungs, rapidly closing my airways and necessitating a ventilator.

I was so critically ill that a team of burn surgeons, infectious disease specialists, ophthalmologists, dermatologists, and their fellows in tow, surrounded me for multiple hours on end. Although the ventilator and Christmas tree of fluids were the only things keeping me alive, amazingly my consciousness remained intact. I began eavesdropping on each conversation as if I were at a soirée, only I was the main subject of the party that night.

I had been a difficult patient, or so I’d heard from the murmurs during these shift changes. Even though I was heavily sedated, I felt the weight of the words said around me. I became even more deranged by the evening hours and experienced vivid hallucinations — I’d later learn this was known as sundowning. I turned into an escape artist by night, repeatedly ripping out my feeding tube and IV hookups during my ICU stay. I remember hallucinating several times and was convinced that someone was trying to kill my loved ones.  

My doctors eventually not only confirmed that I had Stevens-Johnson syndrome, but a more severe form known as Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), since more than 30% of my body was affected. With a mortality rate of 30-50% , I received a heavy dose of steroids to slow the progression of the disease and a considerable amount of opioids to prevent septic shock. Although I wasn’t a burn victim by definition, the blisters that formed left me with internal and external second-degree burns throughout my body’s mucous membranes.

SJS/TEN is an incredibly rare disease — occurring in about one or two in a million people . It’s an allergic reaction triggered by a medication, most commonly antibiotics, or even another illness. There’s no way to know what caused my disease — whether it was Advil, Tylenol, amoxicillin or something else.  Doctors now tell me to avoid taking these altogether to avoid a relapse — this is a common and frustrating problem among survivors of SJS, who struggle to find other ways to manage their pain and illnesses.

With insufficient research on the disease, it’s a miracle that the ER doctors were able to suspect what was happening to my body in a relatively quick timeframe. I’ve met others in survivor groups who weren’t as fortunate; their misdiagnoses cost them even more pain and long-term side effects.

My nurses were my lifeline. As my body shed layers of skin, blood and thick mucus at an uncontrollable rate, they slathered layers of A&D cream, changed out fresh gauze, emptied the catheter drainage bag and cleaned out my bedpan.

Even without the ability to see or talk, I forged a friendship with some of them that I’ll never forget. They were also incredibly gracious to my friends, allowing them to litter my room with get-well balloons and dozens of photos of happier times.

I wondered if I’d ever get to see my nurses again, long after they’ve seen me during the worst days of my life. I want to thank them eternally for looking after me with a level of intense care that’s unimaginable to most.

Eventually, my condition began to improve. Two weeks into my stay in the ICU, I celebrated my 24th birthday — the head burn surgeon even surprised me with one of my favorite desserts: a rich chocolate cake from Little Cupcake Bakeshop. That same day, they removed the ventilator. I had daily physical therapy sessions until discharge day to learn how to walk again after losing nearly 25 pounds.

Nobody tells you that surviving the ICU is just the beginning. I’m approaching two years since my diagnosis this month, and while my good days are starting to outnumber my bad ones, my eyes remain the most painful reminder of the battle I’ve survived. Although I was fortunate that my eyesight returned within a few months, the scarring over my meibomian glands has left me unable to produce tears for the rest of my life. Consequently, I regularly see a team of ophthalmologists to manage severe dry eye syndrome and recently underwent glaucoma surgery.

While Shon still suffers some side effects, she's much better today, and even plans to run the New York City marathon this fall.

There is no cure for Stevens-Johnson syndrome, only a mend for the soul that has endured unimaginable trauma. After leaving my full-time job to focus on my recovery, I began freelance writing, training for the New York City Marathon this fall, and traveling the world within my health means. Most importantly, my soul finds healing by reconnecting with my nurses, meeting other survivors and raising awareness for this rare disease . As a survivor, my initials, SJS, have a completely new meaning for me.

7 Health Benefits of Honeydew Melon

Honeydew melons are the sweetest of all melons and are typically in season from July to September. The summer fruit is light green and soft on the inside and can have white or yellow skin on the outside, although white-skinned versions are generally sweeter. Honeydew is also related to squash and cucumbers.

Honeydew contains plenty of water, as well as vitamin C, B vitamins, fiber, antioxidants, and smaller amounts of other key nutrients. Eating the fruit may offer several health benefits.

1. Supports Hydration  

One cup of diced honeydew melon provides over five ounces (oz) of water. Consuming adequate water helps you stay hydrated and prevent dehydration .

When you become dehydrated, your body overheats, and you can experience unclear thinking, mood changes, constipation, and kidney stones. Drinking water also helps to lubricate and cushion your joints.

One study found adults who stay well-hydrated appear to be healthier, develop fewer chronic conditions, such as heart and lung disease, and live longer compared to people who may not consume enough fluids.

2. Supports Immune Function

Apart from water, the standout nutrient in honeydew is vitamin C . One cup of diced melon provides about a third of the daily requirement for this immune-supporting nutrient.

The immune system needs vitamin C to respond to pathogens like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Vitamin C’s antioxidant abilities also protect cells from damage that increases chronic disease risk. The body can't store water-soluble vitamins for long periods, so a regular and adequate vitamin C intake is required to support healthy immune function.

3. May Support Blood Pressure Regulation

Honeydews are very low in sodium and high in potassium, both of which are good for managing blood pressure . Potassium helps control blood pressure by causing your kidneys to excrete surplus sodium—a nutrient that can cause high blood pressure in excess. Potassium also eases tension in blood vessel walls, which further reduces blood pressure.

One study found melons , including honeydew, activate the production of a substance called nitric oxide (NO). NO helps smooth muscles in the body relax, including blood vessels, reducing blood pressure.

Other research shows eating more fruits and vegetables that produce nitric oxide is part of a diet that can help prevent and treat lifestyle-related diseases, including high blood pressure.

4. May Protect Against Type 2 Diabetes

Research shows eating fruits like honeydew melon may be beneficial for people with or at risk of type 2 diabetes .

A research review found consuming 200 grams (about seven ounces) of fruit per day is linked to diabetes prevention. In addition, consuming up to 133 grams (about five ounces) of fresh fruit per day has been shown to decrease complications and death in people with type 2 diabetes.

Data also shows while fruits with a lower glycemic load (the amount of carbohydrates in a given portion) may be helpful for blood sugar control in those with type 2 diabetes, the glycemic index or glycemic load of individual fruits did not affect diabetes risk.

An Australian study found fruit consumption preserved insulin sensitivity, or how well insulin works to clear sugar from the blood, and was protective against type 2 diabetes.

After adjusting for other dietary and lifestyle factors, scientists concluded that compared to people with the lowest fruit intakes, those with a moderate total fruit consumption had a 36% lower risk of having type 2 diabetes after five years.

Eating fruit also changes gut microbiota , the collection of microbes that live in the gut, in ways that reduce type 2 diabetes risk.

5. May Support Digestive Health

The fluid and fiber in honeydew melon are an important combo for bowel regularity and the prevention of constipation . 

Constipation is defined as having fewer than three bowel movements per week; stools that are hard, dry, or lumpy; stools that are difficult or painful to pass; or a feeling that not all stool has passed.

Common remedies for constipation include eating more fiber and consuming plenty of water; honeydew provides some of both.

6. May Support Bone Health 

Honeydew melon contains several nutrients involved with bone formation and maintenance, including vitamin C and smaller amounts of vitamin K, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidants.

Vitamin C alone, honeydew’s main nutrient, has been tied to a lower risk of hip fracture and osteoporosis (bone disease), as well as higher bone mineral density of both the neck and spine.

In addition, a study found close adherence to the Mediterranean diet—an eating pattern rich in fruits and vegetables—is protective against osteoporosis. Research shows postmenopausal women who most closely stuck with the Mediterranean diet had higher levels of bone mineral density and fewer hip fractures.

7. May Support Skin Health

Honeydew melon is a good source of water and vitamin C and has anti-inflammatory effects, all of which contribute to healthy skin. Skin cells depend on vitamin C to make collagen and to regulate the collagen and elastin balance, which gives skin its volume and shape.

Too little vitamin C can lead to poor skin healing and skin inflammation. Several studies have shown aged or sun-damaged skin contains lower vitamin C levels, although the exact link is unknown. Research indicates excessive exposure to pollutants or sun is associated with depleted skin vitamin C levels.  

In contrast, a higher intake of fruits and vegetables has been shown to decrease signs of skin aging and improve skin tightness, tone, and color.  

Nutrition of Honeydew Melon

One cup of diced honeydew melon provides:

  • Calories: 61.2
  • Fat: 0.238 g
  • Sodium: 30.6 mg, or 1% of the Daily Value (DV)
  • Carbohydrates: 15.5 g
  • Fiber: 1.36 g
  • Protein: 0.918 g
  • Vitamin C: 30.6 mg, or 34% of the DV
  • Potassium: 388 mg, or 8% of the DV

Honeydew also supplies smaller amounts of several nutrients, including some B vitamins, vitamins A and K, and magnesium.

Daily Value

Every food product has a nutrition label stating the amount of calories, fats, and other nutrients per serving. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) selects a value for each nutrient based on the needs of the general population.

These are referred to as Daily Values and are listed as percentages in the right column of food labels. The percentages can help shoppers determine how much of a certain nutrient one serving of a food provides compared to the suggested daily intake.

While melon allergies aren’t common, they can occur. Melons contain substances similar to certain pollens, so if you have a pollen allergy, you may also react to melons.

One study found those with grass and ragweed allergies may also react to melon.

Another potential risk of eating melons is contracting a foodborne illness from bacteria, like E coli , Listeria , or Salmonella , which can be found in the soil where melons grow. Most fruits and vegetables have this risk.

Make sure to wash your hands before handling honeydew melons, and wash the melons before cutting to prevent transferring bacteria from your skin to the fruit's flesh. Once cut, the melon should always be stored in the refrigerator. Leaving it out at room temperature or outdoors on a hot day can lead to bacterial growth that can cause foodborne illness.

In the refrigerator, honeydew melon can last for up to five days in an air-tight container.

Tips for Consuming Honeydew

Honeydew melons don’t ripen after they’ve been harvested, so look for one with telltale signs of ripeness. A ripe melon should be:

  • Symmetrical in shape
  • Heavy for its size
  • Free from cracks, bruises, and soft spots
  • Sweet smelling
  • Slightly soft when squeezed

There are many ways to enjoy honeydew melon while it’s in season. You can eat the fruit:

  • In fruit salad
  • Skewered with other cut fruits
  • Added to a garden salad
  • Added to slaw
  • Whipped into chilled melon soup
  • Added to fresh salsa
  • Pureed into refreshing drinks, like a melon slushy or mocktail
  • Dipped into melted dark chocolate

About a decade ago, a massage therapist in Santa Cruz, Calif., gave me a lecture on the healing properties of coconut oil.

Once a day, she said, she’d scoop a tablespoon into her mouth and swish it around for 20 minutes. Her gums had never looked healthier, she exclaimed, and she even had fewer colds.

I was in graduate school for science journalism at the time and I knew I should be skeptical. But I thought about the dull pain I sometimes felt between two of my molars, which my dentist warned could eventually turn into gum disease. Maybe this oil thing would help.

For several months, I swished and spat until my jaw hurt. And yet my gums still ached. When my dentist probed them with her metal spike at my next checkup, they didn’t look any better.

Like so many of us, I had given in to the allure of an easy fix. I knew deep down that oil swishing probably wasn’t going to do much for my oral health, but I figured I had already tried regular brushing and flossing — why not this?

The increasing complexity of modern society develops a wide range of pressures and stressors that challenges dietary patterns. Best practices in nutrition education are aimed to teach a student the main principles and norms of a healthy diet and show the simplest way how to follow them. The best practice is to involve a student/trainee in the process of change: new dietary patterns and new identity, excellent health, and no illnesses. A trainee should tackle the challenge of attempting to differentiate health styles and wellness. The teacher should discuss the possible outcomes and potential problems of unhealthy behavior patterns and their impact on a person. Whatever program is established, it is important to create and communicate a healthy lifestyle approach that meets the needs of both the trainee and his family.

The difficult task is to develop nutrition programs for poor countries. Thus, the main difficulty is to persuade people that a healthy diet is not expensive and can be successfully introduced by any family. It takes time but it brings healthy lifestyles and the absence of illnesses. A controversy that has surfaced repeatedly is whether health promotion programs reflect health care cost-containment strategies. It is crucial for nutrition educators to motivate and involve the poor in a healthy diet. In very poor countries, it is important to change negative stereotypes concerning dietary patterns and health. Because health promotion programs are relatively new for these countries, their administrative locations are not consistent across poor states. This lack of consistency brings with it a clear difference in philosophical goals. The main strategies should involve healthy cooking and a simple diet including milk products and grain, meat, fruits, and vegetables. The conclusions seem to be that nutrition education programs should be integrated into poor societies and their culture.

Mass media (TV, radio, and press) can be effective tools to promote nutrition education and diet in poor countries. It is possible to promote healthy lifestyles and a balanced diet through TV shows and press releases. Many people in less developed countries are unaware of how much, what, or where they eat. Much of the food they eat can be considered forgotten food, this is particularly so with snacks, food is eaten whilst watching TV or food tasted during cooking. Helping poor states increase their awareness of current eating habits is an essential first step in the management process.

Only when they begin to recognize the eating practices which are contributing to their excess energy intake can they move towards considering where and how to make appropriate changes. Food diaries are a very useful self-monitoring tool, encourage patients to be actively involved in treatment, and may give an indication of motivation. Special attention should be given to costs spend on healthcare and problems caused by current dietary patterns and ineffective dietary balance. It is possible to use a slogan like: health is cheaper than illness: eating and healthy diet is the best approach to save money”. Involving partners and families in the attempts to make healthier choices is important in increasing compliance to dietary changes and as a cost-effective means of extending health messages. Rather than the goal is to eat less fatty food, which is very general, it would be preferable for the patients to set specific goals such as to eat less fatty foods by changing from butter to a low-fat spread and to use fat-free salad dressings rather than mayonnaise in salads and sandwiches.

And a dirigible pilot confirmed his participation.Ultralight aviation pilots will take part in the “Air games” within the festival. As last year a campsite of ultralight aviation will base in an area near a village Milniki.

History of Perm Krai

For the first time the word “perm” was mentioned in “The Tale of Past Years”, a fundamental source in the interpretation of the history of the Eastern Slavs created in the early 12th century. Perm were one of the peoples who paid tribute to the Kievan Rus. They were found by the first Russian expeditions to the Urals, to the north of the Kama River basin. Later, in Russian chronicles, this territory was called Old Perm or Perm Vychegodskaya.

Unlike Perm Vychegodskaya, the land along the upper reaches of the Kama River became known as the Great Perm. This name is often found in the written monuments of the 14th century. In the 14th - 17th centuries, the Great Perm included extensive lands along the Kama from its origins in the west to the Ural mountain range in the east, and from the upper reaches of the Pechora River in the north to the Chusovaya River in the south.

Novgorod merchants were the first ones who got interested in the Great Perm (furs and tributes). In the 14th - the first half of the 15th centuries, the Grand Duchy of Moscow began to encroach on the lands in the upper Kama. In the early 15th century, the first Russian settlements were founded in the Great Perm.

In the second half of the 15th century, after the Novgorod Republic ceased to exist, the area became part of the united Russian state. Russia significantly expanded its borders to the east and gained access to new natural resources.

In the 17th century, the town of Sol Kamskaya (Solikamsk) became an important center of military, economic and cultural assimilation of the Middle Urals in the north. In the south-east, the newly constructed town of Kungur played the same role. In the first quarter of the 18th century, about 46,000 people lived on the territory of Great Perm, about 65% of them were Russians.

Until 1727, the Middle Urals was part of Siberian gubernia with the center in Tobolsk, then Perm was part of Kazan gubernia, and, from 1781, by order of Catherine II, the Perm region ruled by a governor-general was formed.

It remained the main mining area of the Russian Empire until the end of the 19th century. There were more than 110 mining plants producing cast iron, iron, steel. For a long time, it was the main provider of copper. Salt production was also developed. In the east of the Urals large deposits of platinum were discovered. By the end of the 19th century, gold mining grew twice.

The 20th century was marked by intense growth of the local industry: engineering structure became more complex and rich. During the Second World War, more than 120 plants were evacuated in the Western Urals. Such branches of industry as chemical, non-ferrous metallurgy, oil-processing developed intensely; oil deposits prospecting began; a number of pulp and paper mills was concentrated in the region; new towns grew on the basis of new industries.

In 1938, Perm Oblast was formed. In 1940-1957, it was called Molotov Oblast. In Soviet times, the Komi-Perm Autonomous District was part of Perm oblast. In 1993, with the adoption of the Constitution of Russia, it became an independent subject of the Russian Federation.

In 2003, a referendum was held in which the residents of Perm Oblast and the Komi-Perm Autonomous District supported the unification of the two regions into one. In 2005, these two administrative regions ceased to exist and the united Perm Krai was formed.

Perm Krai - Features

The territory of Perm Krai is located in the basin of the Kama River, which provides access to 5 seas (the Caspian, Azov, Black, Baltic, and White). The length of Perm krai from north to south is 645 km, form west to east - 417.5 km.

The climate is temperate continental. Winters are long and snowy. The average temperature in January is minus 18.5 degrees Celsius in the north-east and minus 15 degrees Celsius in the south-west, in July - plus 18.6 degrees Celsius.

The largest cities and towns are Perm (1,043,000), Berezniky (134,700), Solikamsk (91,000), Chaikovsky (81,300), Kungur (63,600), Lys’va (58,800), Krasnokamsk (51,000), Chusovoy (42,700). The national composition according to the 2010 Census: Russians (87.1%), Tatars (4.6%), Komi-Permians (3.2%), Bashkirs (1.3%), Udmurts (0.8%).

Perm Krai is rich in various natural resources: oil, natural gas, coal, mineral salts, gold, diamonds, bog iron ore, peat, limestone, precious and decorative stones, construction materials. One of the largest deposits of potassium salts in the world - Verkhnekamskoye - is located here. It occupies about 1,800 sq. km., the thickness of salt-bearing layers reaches 514 m. Forests, mostly coniferous, cover about 70% of the territory.

This region is one of the most economically developed regions in Russia. The basis of the local economy is highly developed industry. The main branches are as follows: oil, chemical and oil chemical, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, wood processing. All potassium fertilizers in Russia are produced here.

Attractions of Perm Krai

The most famous museum in Perm Krai is the Perm Art Gallery that has the world-famous collection of Perm wooden sculpture and one of the richest in Russia collections of masterpieces of Russian icon painting. The museum of local lore in Perm has a number of interesting exhibits telling about the nature of the Kama region, its rich historical past from prehistoric times to the present day.

Not far from Perm, on the high bank of the Kama River, you can find “Khokhlovka” - an architectural and ethnographic museum covering an area of 42 hectares. The museum has unique wooden buildings of the 17th-19th centuries. Every summer, various folk festivals are held in the territory of this open-air museum.

In the south-eastern part of the region, in the town of Kungur, there is a unique natural monument of nationwide importance - Kungur Ice Cave. This is the only cave in Russia adapted for excursions. The old town of Kungur, founded in 1663, is a historical town with about 70 monuments of architecture.

Solikamsk is one of the oldest towns in the Urals. There is a unique museum of salt here. The town’s architecture reflects the techniques of Moscow architecture of the mid-17th century and the local tradition dating back to pagan times.

There is a number of interesting places along the Chusovaya River connected with many historical events, well-known figures of Russian history (Ermak, Stroganov, Demidov, Emelyan Pugachev). On its way the river crosses several mountain ranges, therefore, on its banks there are many picturesque rocks.

There are several architectural monuments in the towns of Osa, Usolye. Belogorsky Monastery and Gubaha Ski Resort are also worth mentioning.
