Liger - Saala Crossbreed Reviews

liger movie review and rating

Artists get very riled up while reading reviews critical of their work. But they should sit in the theater during the last screening of the day and listen to the things people want to inflict on those around them in real life while watching their movies.

The conversation that persuaded Tyson to be in Liger could be its own movie. It might be more entertaining too.

There is this general insolence in the script because Jagannadh is looking for moments that can be, somehow, stitched together...

A colossal disappointment.

Not even a Mike Tyson cameo can save Puri Jagannadh’s new film about an underdog who is also a top dawg.

Deverakonda is a genuine star and certainly could have hoped for a better film than Liger to be his Bollywood debut. Even his infinite charm and dedication aren’t enough to uplift it.

There's nothing more pleasurable than a masala movie done right. But there's nothing new or fresh about the ingredients that go into the making of Liger...

An assault on your senses...

liger movie review and rating

Liger overflows with the signature tackiness of Puri Jagannadh’s films and the misogyny that Vijay Deverakonda has proudly worn on his sleeve since he struck box-office gold with Arjun Reddy.

Full Review | Original Score: 0.1/5 | Aug 26, 2022

liger movie review and rating

I am jealous of everyone who hasn't had to watch Liger this week.

The lead actor is saddled with scenes in which the other actors are required to holler at the top of their voices to make up for the monosyllables that the hero utters with difficulty.

liger movie review and rating

Liger fails to live up to the standards of either star or director and instead winds up as a below average potboiler too reliant on local tropes to feel fresh for Telugu film veterans or welcoming for newcomers.

liger movie review and rating

Liger is a dead duck from the word go.

LIGER MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Liger is a film written and directed by Puri Jagannadh, and produced by Karan Johar, Puri Jagannadh, and Charmme Kaur under the banners Dharma Productions and Puri Connects. It features Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Pandey in the lead roles while Ramya Krishnan, Ronit Roy and others play crucial supporting roles. The film also has Mike Tyson in a cameo.

Liger (Vijay Deverakonda) is a martial arts fighter who wants to become the National Mixed Martial Arts champion, something his father failed to achieve. He joins an academy in Mumbai and trains hard but is distracted by his love interest Tanya (Ananya Pandey). After winning the event, his aim is to take part in UFC. How he manages to achieve this dream forms the rest of the plot.

For a sports drama like Liger to work, the film has to show us how the protagonist learns a sport, the downfall, the difficulties in achieving a goal, the emotional battles, what is at stake and more. However, this film misses these details. For a very long time you keep wondering what the film is trying to convey because it meanders around aimlessly.

Right from the hero introduction fight, Liger's character is invincible. Even the relationship between him and his mentor isn't established properly. The training sessions are just a few montages of Liger working out in a gym. Neither is the relationship between Liger and his mother or his girlfriend shown properly.

The film has plenty of songs and each of them are huge speed breakers for an already weak screenplay. Another issue is that all the songs are identical with respect to the mood and have no relevance to the plot whatsoever. For instance, there's a scene where Vijay Deverakonda is scolded heavily by his coach and mother for going behind Ananya Pandey, and he also regrets his actions. Immediately the scene cuts to a peppy love song.

The only saving grace of the film is Vijay Deverakonda's performance which reminds us of his role in Arjun Reddy. He really shines in the fight sequences, especially towards the climax. Ananya Pandey's role lacks any meat and only comes to life during the songs. Mike Tyson's inclusion in the pre-climax and climax scenes looked wasted and he could have been used far better.

The stunt choreography is also quite stylish and has been shot well. Except the stunts, the camerawork and the music don't offer much to the film. The cinematography is unstable, with the camera moving around without a purpose, and the music is too loud. In a few places, the music gives us cues on how to react to the proceedings on screen.

Overall, the film is average technically and below par when it comes to writing. A lot of scenes look inspired from other movies, and are predictable. This affects the engagement of the film badly. A lot could have been better, but if you're a Vijay Deverakonda fan, Liger is a strict one time watch for you. For the rest, there are literally no factors that redeem the film at any point.

Liger Review: Knock Out Punch For Audience

Movie: Liger Rating: 2/5 Banner: Puri Connects & Dharma Productions Cast: Vijay Deverakoda, Ananya Panday, Ramya Krishna, Mike Tyson, Ronit Roy, Vishu Reddy, Ali, Makarand Desh Pandey, Getup Sreenu, and others Stunts: Kecha DOP: Vishnu Sarma Editor: Junaid Siddiqui Art: Jonny Shaik Basha Producers: Puri Jagannadh, Charmee, Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Hiroo Yash Johar  Story, Screenplay, Dialogues and Directed by: Puri Jagannadh  Release Date: Aug 25, 2022

“Liger” has created tremendous hype. The combination of director Puri Jagannadh and young sensation Vijay Deverakonda has occupied the media and social media space lately. Boxing legend Mike Tyson’s presence is another reason.

Besides big-ticket movies like “RRR”, “Radhe Shyam” and “KGF”, this pan-Indian film has also created buzz nationwide. Let’s find out whether the film lives up to the hype.

Story: Liger (Vijay Deverakonda) and his mother Balamani (Ramya Krishna) move to Mumbai from Karimnagar.

Balamani aims to see his son become a champion in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) as her husband died without realizing his dream of winning a title in a boxing championship.

The mother and son run a chai shop in Mumbai for a living and Liger gets trained under an MMA guru (Ronit Roy).

A rich girl Tanya (Ananya Panday) loves him and this romance changes his life altogether.

Will he become a champion or will he land in trouble due to his love story?

Artistes’ Performances: If you take away Vijay Deverakonda from the scene, nothing holds. Such a magnetic power he has in this film. He underwent a stunning makeover and developed a terrific body to play the role of ‘Liger’. While the stuttering act is not always perfect, his sincerity and hard work are praiseworthy. However, the script doesn’t give him anything to go beyond the surface.

Ramya Krishna’s role as a spirited mother lacks enough material. Despite that, the senior actress gives what is required. Ananya Panday plays a typical heroine’s role.

Boxing legend Mike Tyson makes an appearance in the climax part. But the role Puri has written for him is half-baked.

Getup Seenu, Ali, and Ronit Roy do an okay job. Vishu Reddy does justice to his role.

Technical Excellence: The film is made on a lavish scale. The Las Vegas sequences and the production values have brought the film a rich look. Vishnu Sharma’s cinematography is top-class.

“Coka 2.0” and “Aafat” are beautiful on screen but both come in the wrong places in the film. Puri’s trademark dialogues are effective here and there.

Highlights: Vijay Deverakonda’s performance and presence The beginning sequences with VD and Ronit Roy

Drawback: Lack of story No emotional high No strong conflict or villain Final moments Mike Tyson’s presence wasted

Analysis The career of Puri Jagannadh, the director of many sensational blockbusters, lacks consistency. “Liger” seemed to be the opportunity to return to his glory days of “Pokiri”. With the scale of the movie (a pan-Indian project with Karan Johar joining hands) and a rising star in the lead role, the hype it generated gave the perfect vehicle for him to show his stamp. But, it turns out to be a wasted effort as “Liger” looks like an exercise with no proper script.

The film has a Mumbai setting. Had Puri written a story as bulky as Vadapav, it would have been different. But the storyline is as thin as a paper dosa. More than the story, the film doesn’t have a strong conflict or high emotional quotient, or a strong villain, the essential elements for mass movies. Puri Jagannadh’s script writing is not at all good here.

The idea of a protagonist with a stammering problem is irritating. The USP of this actor is his dialogue delivery. Director made a colossal mistake by thwarting his strength with this disability to the character. Moreover, this deficiency in the hero hardly makes any difference to the main story.

Puri Jagannadh begins this film as an inspirational story of a rise of a champion from a humble background. But midway, he cuts to the routine love story. The main goal gets lost in the melee. At a point it appears as if written by an amateur writer but not Puri Jagannath. So shocking!

The so-called MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fights and sequences, which come one after the other, make a tiresome watch. Despite naming it MMA, the fights are similar to many boxing dramas. No difference! The film and the fights don’t provide a high.

The film further goes downhill when the story shifts to Las Vegas.  Things turn awkward as poor scenes are written to introduce the character of boxing legend Mike Tyson. A lengthy fight scene with lady fighters is another misstep. Thus, the final act completely goes wrong and becomes pointless. A legend like Tyson should have given better scenes.

Despite Vijay Deverakonda’s hard work, Puri wastes the golden opportunity to get pan-Indian fame.

Overall, “Liger” neither delivers a knockout punch nor does it offer thundering moments. It only proves that Puri Jagannadh is yet to come to his old form despite delivering 'iSmart Shakar' recently.

Bottom line: Bo..Bo..Bo..Boring

What's Behind

Vijay Devarakonda's Liger which marks his Bollywood entry is releasing on August 25, 2022 across the world. the film directed by Puri Jagannath has been promoted rigorously and the presence of boxing champion Mike Tyson increased the curiosity levels. Bollywood beauty Ananya Pandey is the female lead. Let us find out whether Vijay Devarakonda Vaat Laga Diya with Liger at the box office.

Story Review

The story is all about how a poor lad raised in the slums goes on to win the national and internal martial arts championship. Balamani (Ramyakrishna), the mother of Liger (Vijay Devarakonda), dreams of making her son raise his dad Balaram's aim of winning the national martial arts championship. Balamani and Liger land in Mumbai to raise their dreams. Liger who is an expert in martial arts undergoes Jeet Kun Do training under the instructor (Ronit Roy). Liger however gets distracted by Tanya (Ananya Pandey), the sister of his rival gang Sanjay Sahu (Vishu). When their love story is about to blossom Tanya gets to know the secret of Liger. To find out what is Liger's secret and the twists and turns in his journey to success, enjoy Liger on the big screen.

Artists, Technicians Review

The story of a slumdog conquering the world in sports and overcoming all the adversaries is nothing new. Puri Jagannath's Liger story is no different. The only thing is he showcased his hero suffering from stammering problems. This generated interest initially and the initial scenes set the stage for the bigger challenges. The coach Ronit Roy refusing to train and then testing Vijay Devarakonda and then giving a green signal are routine. Ananya Pandey's entry and scenes slow down the tempo and impact the film in a big way.

The pace slows down considerably with predictable scenes between Vijay Devarakonda, Ramya Krishna, and Ananya Pandey. In between songs come from nowhere signaling the downfall and there one understands that Puri Jagannath has no story to tell and he is just beating around the bush. The end of the first half comes as a relief but viewers still hoped that the second half turns better as they await the entry of boxing legend Mike Tyson and the action sequences of mixed martial arts. But their expectations turned out to be false as the action sequences with the lady villains and the martial arts fights in the ring and Ramya Krishna's expressions and dialogues turn out to be caricaturish and amateurish. People get excited when Mike Tyson appears on the screen. But within minutes, people will be seen cursing Puri Jagannath for giving such a role to the legend and insulting him completely. Finally, the film ends with the so-called Pushpa like- climax and it disappoints everyone.

Puri Jagannath turned out to be the main villain for Liger as it has no story and the screenplay and direction turned out to be atrocious. Puri Jagannath is known for routine commercial entertainer but he scored hits highlighting the emotions. But Liger missed everything and surprising that Puri and Vijay despite having so much time turned out to be so overconfident.

Vijay Devarakonda slipped into the role effortlessly. He once again showed his acting prowess and justified that he is a versatile actor. Vijay Devarakonada impresses with his expressions and emotions and he worked hard to show his dancing skills. He enacted high-octane stunts with ease. But all his effort and makeover turned out to be nothing as the story turned out to be extremely weak. Even at times, one gets a feeling that Vijay Devarakonda is doing roles that are turning out to be monotonous. In this film, he got limited dialogue and the stutter and stammer are ok to some extent but later irritated viewers.

Ananya Pandey for all her hot looks and glamor treat in the film failed to make an impact. Vijay Devarakonda and Ananya Pandey's on-screen chemistry did not create any magic. In fact, their romantic track turned out to be the weak link in the film. Ramya Krishna played the role of Vijay Devarakonda's mother and she is ok in her role but in the second half and at times she went overboard.

Boxing Legend Mike Tyson played an important role. But his role turned out to be a caricature and an insult to his statue. Wonder why Mike Tyson agreed to do this film. Others like Ronit Roy, Vishnu Reddy, Ali, Makarand Desh Pandey, and Getup Srinu performed according to their roles.

Songs are shot lavishly and in the backdrop of extravagant sets. All the songs acted as the speed breakers dragging back the already non-existing story. Sunil Kashyap's background music is in sync with the storyline and there is much to talk about it. The editing of Junaid Siddique is ok and he cannot be faulted as the story is routine and predictable and dragged to the end and he is just helpless. Production values are good.

Rating Analysis

Vijay Devarakonda known for his attitude teamed with Puri Jagannath known for his mass entertainers and came with Liger. The film came up with the tagline Saala Crossbreed. Truly it turned out to be the crossbreed of all the mass films and in the end, the crossbreed instead of gaining the strength of Tiger and Lion as promoted by the makers, however, inherited all the weaknesses. Liger Waat or Aag Nahi Lagaya instead Pani Dal Diya. If one decides to come up with a crossbreed of all the films, the result will be like Liger with a weak story, screenplay, and direction. Saala box-office Duba Diya. Considering all these aspects,  Cinejosh goes with a 2 rating for Liger.

Liger is one of the most awaited films in recent times. The film has been promoted aggressively and is out now India-wide in multiple languages. Let’s see whether the film lives up to the hype or not.

Liger’s(Vijay Devarakonda) only aim is to become a national MMA champion. He and his mom(Ramya Krishna) land in Mumbai to pursue their dream. Liger gets trained in MMA but the twist in the tale arises when he gets cheated on by a rich girl Tanya(Ananya Pandey). The rest of the story is about how a heartbroken Liger gets back in form and wins the international MMA championship.

Plus Points:

Vijay Devarakonda does a decent job in his role and his transformation looks good. His stammering act is irritating but he manages it well in the second half. Ananya Pandey does her best in the role of a rich girl but her character is not etched properly.

Ali is decent in his role and Getup Sreenu evokes a few laughs in the first half. Ramya Krishna as Vijay Devarakonda’s mom is good in her role and evokes decent emotions. Ronit Roy is impressive as the coach.

Mike Tyson appears at the end of the film and his cameo has been nicely shot. All his fun scenes with Vijay Devarakonda are nice. The MMA fight sequences have been choreographed well in the film.

Minus Points:

Vijay Devarakonda’s stammering act looks good in the promos but does not gel well in the film. Perhaps it is the biggest mistake of Puri Jagan to show him as a man with a disability. The audience who loves Vijay’s free-flowing dialogue delivery will be disappointed as the stammering act is dull.

Liger has a water-thin storyline that does not work. There is no proper conflict in the film and the hero’s journey looks half-baked. The love story is also forced and does not create much interest.

The first half has a proper story and some good songs. But the second half goes for a toss. Vijay’s journey to the US and how he became famous look over the top. There is absolutely no emotional connection in the film and this is where Liger disappoints.

The twist featuring Ananya Pandey looks silly and has not been handled well. The mother’s sentiment is also loud and lacks proper depth. There are no high moments in the film and the audience who wanted to see Vijay Devarakonda as a typical Puri hero will be disappointed.

Technical Aspects:

The production values of the film are neat. The camera work is also pretty good. The music sounds cool in Hindi but when it comes to Telugu, the songs do not sink. BGM by Sunil Kashyap is disappointing in the first half but was good in the latter part. The production design is not that great.

Coming to the director Puri Jagan, he has surely not lived up to the hype created. Once again, he has written and narrated a story in a rush and that is clearly visible on screen. Making the hero stammer does not work one bit.

Puri is known to elevate his hero characters but there are not many scenes that do such in Liger. Bringing Mike Tyson into the narrative looks good but the way the proceedings are ended looks quite silly. The Puri mark dialogues and emotions are clearly missing in the film.

The sports drama created by Puri is also beaten to death and has no freshness. There is no proper villain and this is where the conflict created by Puri does not create much impact. But he creates a few high moments with comedy and evokes some patriotic dialogues which will work for the masses.

On the whole, liger does not live up to the hype created. A wafer-thin storyline, Vijay’s stammering act, and rushed proceedings are basic drawbacks. But there are a few good mass moments and Vijay’s transformation which will be loved by the B and C center audience making this film a strictly passable watch. All we suggest you is to go in with fewer expectations.

Liger Movie Review (2022)

Puri jagannadh's liger, starring vijay deverakonda and ananya panday, feels like a cruel joke on those who think "south films are better".

Liger Movie Review in English

Liger Movie Cast & Crew

There's a terrific idea for a scene in the first half of Puri Jagannadh's Liger . That title refers to the Vijay Deverakonda character, who is named after his lion-like father and his tigress-like mother, played by Ramya Krishnan. Liger and his mother make their living by selling tea, but Liger falls for the super-rich Taniya, played by Ananya Panday. The scene I am talking about has Liger's mother telling Taniya how she raised him single-handedly, and it's her dream to make him an MMA fighter, and she does not want a flighty society girl to destroy that dream. A good masala -movie writer would have made this scene soar. It has everything: a mother's ambition, the rich-versus-poor conflict, a young man whose ambition is swayed by the distractions of a young woman. There is everything. And yet, the scene is a giant ball of nothing. It does nothing to you. It feels like one of many "checkboxes" someone thought they had to include in order to make a certain kind of mass-appeal movie.

It's disturbing enough that Bollywood filmmakers have forgotten to make good masala movies. But when the Telugu filmmaker responsible for Pokiri and who made a mini-comeback with iSmart Shankar fails so badly, it feels like a double disaster. Like that earlier scene I talked about, the entire movie is a series of ideas for scenes, ideas that are not fleshed out at all. There is a great idea for a scene where Taniya talks about how guys cannot handle a breakup. There's a great idea for a scene where Liger imagines his opponent as the man who killed his father. There's a great idea for a scene where Liger, who stammers, says people will call a stammerer a stammerer – there is no self-pity, he has accepted the fact. But because the love angle is so badly written, and because Liger's father remains an abstract concept, and because Liger's stammer adds nothing to the character, these ideas do not impact us one bit.

Liger feels like a bad 80s-90s Tamil or Telugu movie where a song or a comedy track would be randomly inserted, without any care about the overall emotional arc. The mother, the girlfriend, the coach figure played by Ronit Roy, the strain of patriotism – nothing and no one registers, and neither does Vijay Deverakonda. How can you evaluate the acting when the screenplay is so terrible and the director doesn't seem to be looking through the monitor to see reaction shots? The film feels like a cruel joke on those who think "south films are better". It feels like it's been made to say "south films can suck big-time, too". A few weeks back,  I reviewed the Karthi-starring Tamil film, Viruman . It is a generic template-movie, but at least that template was adhered to faithfully. There was no innovation, but whatever was done was done with a bit of conviction. Even that bit of conviction is completely absent in Liger .

The biggest question on my mind was how Vijay Deverakonda signed this film. Whether you like this actor's work or not, you have to admit that he tries to pick scripts that are different. World Famous Lover did not work, but at least you could see the potential Vijay saw in it and why he was interested. But what did he see in this collection of cliches? Did he not see that the film is an excruciating - and very randomly put together - mix of action and romance? Did he not sense that the Mike Tyson cameo is unintentionally hilarious? Did he not see that the conflict points are abruptly cut off by badly placed songs? The film's best bit has the coach dismissing Liger's stammer. He says it's okay if your words come late, but your punches should land on time. But even the fights are boring, all chopped to pieces and giving little sense of actually being there. Like everyone in the movie, even the editor seems to have checked out. The title suggests a cross between two magnificent animals, but Liger feels more like a cross between some of the worst commercial movies ever made.

Liger Movie Review: Vijay Deverakonda's Liger can't roar, it purrs

Director puri jagannadh's liger, starring vijay deverakonda and ananya panday, is a convoluted sports drama with a lacklustre story. in other words, liger is a wasted opportunity, says our review..

Listen to Story

Vijay Deverakonda's Liger hit the theatres on August 25.

  • Liger hit the theatres on August 25.
  • Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday play the lead roles in the film.
  • The sports drama is directed by Puri Jagannadh.

For the past month, we have seen Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday in every corner of the country in flashy clothes promoting Liger. Vijay Deverakonda, director Puri Jagannadh and co-producer Charmme Kaur were, therefore, confident of Liger's success. In a promotional interview, the Arjun Reddy actor claimed that Liger is already a 'blockbuster'. Has the film lived up to the expectations that the team created with aggressive promotions? The answer is a big no.

Balamani (Ramya Krishnan) and her son Liger (Vijay Deverakonda), who reside in Karimnagar, move to Mumbai to make it big in the world of MMA. Liger, (yes, that's his name, we kid you not) has a stutter and is, therefore, ridiculed at every opportunity. His fighting skills shut people up. Soon, they find a coach for him in Ronit Roy. Liger's ultimate aim in life is to become a famous MMA fighter.

Balamani, however, warns him not to get distracted by falling in love. Meanwhile, Tanya (Ananya Panday), a social media celebrity, is impressed after seeing Liger fight. And eventually, they fall in love. So, exactly what his mother warned him not to do. Hmm...

Director Puri Jagannadh, who has given several memorable films in the past, looks totally out of form. Liger took three years to make, but the story doesn't show that. It is a story that is so stale that even a child could predict the proceedings. You get no justifiable backstory as to why Balamani and Liger chose MMA as a life goal.

That said, Liger starts on a promising note. The street fight portions grab our attention. Sadly, that is it. The screenplay goes downhill from here because of the lousy love track between Ananya and Vijay. The scenes are so lazily written that every time Tanya pops up on the screen, you let out a breath in exasperation.

If that's testing your patience, wait for it. Liger's story reaches its climax 10 minutes into the second half. But, Puri Jagannadh refuses to believe it and stretches it further with literally zero stakes. The story takes us to the US and then introduces boxing legend Mike Tyson as Mark Henderson. While this cameo is intended to bring the much-needed high, it turns out to be unintentionally funny.

Puri Jagannadh's screenplay failed to evoke any sense of emotion, let alone a positive one. Except for one or two scenes, every sequence is redundant and seems like they are lifted off from other commercial films. From the trailer, Liger seemed to be a template rags-to-riches story. But, as you sit in the theatre watching the film, you realise it is neither a moving love story nor a thrilling sports drama, rags, and riches, but never together.

Vijay Deverakonda's physical transformation is commendable. But, his stammer act goes OTT sometimes. He is still in the Arjun Reddy mode and it is high time he snaps out of it as it's getting repetitive. Ramya Krishnan is loud, but she is easily one of the characters who made the film interesting. Ananya Panday as the damsel in forever distress is forgettable. Mike Tyson is a legend and it is baffling to see how he accepted such a role which has zero conviction or adds any value to the story.

Liger also joins the long list of films that blame women for men getting distracted. The film makes us question if the team spent ample time writing the script. If only Puri Jagannadh, Charmme Kaur and Karan Johar had set aside half of the time and money for the script instead of the promotions, Liger could have been a much better film. If only.

2 out of 5 stars for Liger. Published By: Nairita Mukherjee Published On: Aug 25, 2022 --- ENDS ---

Liger Movie Review & Ratings | Hit or Flop?

Liger Movie Review : Vijay Devarakonda has been stretching his acting chops in a new film titled “Liger.” The film has generated a lot of curiosity since it was announced, in part because it will be Vijay Devarakoinda’s first PAN India film. Interest in the film was piqued even further when the trailer was released.

Liger Movie Review

Despite the fact that the film has been heavily promoted across India, and of course, as we all know how Vijay Devarakonda involves in promotional activities, the film has finally been released today, August 25, 2022. Without further ado, let’s dive into the detailed review and see if the film lives up to the expectations.

Table of Contents

According to the film’s plot, Balamani (Ramya Krishna) and her son Liger (Vijay Devarakonda) are originally from Karimnagar, but now make their home in Mumbai, where they launch a chai company. Balamani’s ultimate goal for her son Liger is for him to become a famous fighter. But there’s a twist in the story that Balamani tells about Liger’s father that makes it appear like he needs a lot of money to become champion. And lastly, who exactly is the Liger Father? To what extent do we know Balamani’s history? Is it possible for Liger to join the Boxing team? Watching the film is the only way to find out this information.

Cast & Crew

Leading parts in Liger were played by Vijay Devarakonda and Ananya Pandey, with supporting turns by Ramya Krishna, Ronit Roy, Vishu Reddy, Ali, Makarand Desh Pandey, and Getup Srinu. Produced by Puri Jagannadh, Charmee Kaur, Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Hiroo Yash Johar; written and directed by Puri Jagannadh; filmed and photographed by Vishnu Sarma; music supervised by Azeem Dayani; edited and supervised by Junaid Siddiqui.

Movie Verdict

After a long hiatus, Puri Jagannadh returned to the boxing genre with this film. The genre is popular in Telugu, with a handful of excellent examples including Srihari’s Badhrachalam and Pawan Kalyan’s Thammudu. The film opens with the usual Puri Jagannadh action sequence, but the story soon shifts to Mumbai, where we see some drama between Balamani and Liger.

It seems like Puri Jagannadh stretched all the drama and love story in the first half only so that he could focus the whole second half on Boxing sequences and a Myke Tyson scene, but that seems to have backfired because the core emotion didn’t land well in the first half and that affected the second half, though if the first half could have chopped few scenes, then it might work out.

Ramya Krishna as Balamani is just brilliant, her body language, and dialogue deliver every nuance added so much to the character, Ronit Roy, Vishu Reddy, Ali, Makarand Desh Pandey, and Getup Srinu do their part well. Vijay as Liger is good as he shines so well in most of the scenes with stammering but he failed in showcasing a few core emotions.

We can see Puri’s stamp in this film—his taking, his hero’s characterization, and his dialogues—but it’s different from his previous films in that he focused more on the tale than the hero. Nonetheless, he was successful in keeping the audience interested in the picture from beginning to end.

It’s clear that a lot of money went into making Liger, and it shows: the cinematography by Vishnu Sarma is solid, the score by a variety of Bollywood artists under the direction of Azeem Dayani is excellent, and the rest of the technical departments did a fantastic job as well.

In the end, Liger is a visually stunning treat for fans of Vijay Devarakonda and an entertaining boxing story for the rest of the audience.

Liger Movie Review – Vijay’s Show !

Liger Movie Review

Liger Movie Review

TELUGU360 RATING 2.5/5

Karimnagar resident Balamani (Ramya Krishna) wants her son Liger ( Vijay ) to become a national champion in Martial arts. The mother-son duo move to Mumbai to pursue their life ambition. Macho man Liger initially concentrates on his career dream but gets distracted when in love with Taniya ( Ananya Panday). The rest of the film deals with the dispute between the lead couple, the World MMA championship in Las Vegas, and finally the Kidnaping event in USA episodes.

Puri Jagan takes off the film in a promising manner, however, the impression fizzles as he delivers very predictable stuff scene after another. Vijay’s characterization stands out in the first half while the terribly written Taniya ( Ananya Panday) – Liger ( Vijay ) love thread plays the spoilsport.

As in a typical sports film template, Liger deals with the ambitious hero. In the training phase, the director downplays him as an underdog. Vijay’s clash with rich counterparts and typical love track episodes are very predictable stuff from Puri Jagan and the team. Given the nationwide buzz, this film got from the beginning, this monotonous script and lackluster direction is unacceptable. Despite predictable narration, the first half is still able to watch. The conflict point between the lead couple is awful; the eventual justification for the conflict is laughable.

We can call out this film’s love track as one of the worst in Puri Jagan’s career. He has the capability of delivering engaging threads, and characterization with ease. That strength of Puri Jagan is amiss in Liger.

Once the hero Liger becomes the national champion, the story goes over the top. Liger gets an invitation to the international championship, Ali helps the cause, and Chunkey Panday sponsors the trip as such scenes are silly. By pre-climax, the film sounds like a comedy film rather than an inspiring sports one. The climax episode with Mike Tyson is a colossal waste of time, money, and energy of all involved persons. Ramya Krishna’s characterization is good in the first half, but the over-the-top antics in the second half unbearable.

A great opportunity to continue the pan-Indian Telugu film’s success streak is missed by Puri Jagan. His typical strengths are no longer visible. Maybe it is high time to get rid of his ‘ Deyyalu ‘ (If exists) and ‘ Focus ‘!

Performances:

Evidently, Vijay Deverakonda has put enormous effort in bodybuilding, to dub as a stammering character, and mainly to act in this tougher role. His fights are excellent, and so is the dance in Coka Song & Akdi Pakdi . Full marks to the hero and the director in this aspect.

Ananya Panday looks Okay but due to the awfully written Taniya role, the audience get irritated every time she appears on the screen. Ronit Roy as MMS coach is good. Ramya character is a mixed bag. Getup Srinu role fails to evoke humor. Chunky Panday , Ali play other characters. Vishu Reddy as Sanju is a good fit.

Dharma Productions & Puri Connects production values are good.

– The solid screen presence of Vijay Deverakonda

– Mass appealing dialogues here and there

– Coka , Akdi Pakdi songs

– Terrible love track

– Overaction to Ramyakrishna role

-Highly predictable sports template

– Farcical second half

‘ Liger ‘ is a missed opportunity. Vijay Devarakonda did all the hard work, and his screen presence and performance are very good. Director Puri Jagan has poorly executed the script and failed to put up engaging scenes. Vijay Fans and mass film lovers can try this film!

Ve…Ve…Very Bad

OUR RATING 1.75/5

Vijay-Deverakonda-Liger-Telugu-Movie-Review

Balamani (Ramya Krishna) and his son Liger (Vijay Deverakonda) move to Mumbai from Karimnagar to learn MMA. Soon they find a coach, and Liger starts training. It is the dream of Liger to become an MMA fighter.

Liger’s mom warns him to stay away from girls and not fall in love. The overall story is what happens when Liger falls in love with Tanya (Ananya Panday). The journey of Liger from a National champion to an International one, and what happens later, is the movie’s overall plot.

Performances

Without any doubt, Vijay Deverakonda is the mainstay of Liger. He has always been sincere in his acts, but one could sense repetitiveness. In Liger, one gets such a feeling despite the unique characterisation. Vijay Deverakonda plays a guy with a stutter. It is a simple tweak, but it brings a lot of freshness to the role. It comes with a problem, but more on it later.

The character trait and the action form the two shades in Liger for Vijay Deverakonda. If the stuttering dominated the significant portions of the first half, aiding the romance, then it’s the action plus stammering in the second.

If one were to assess the part strictly, there is nothing new in the act from Vijay Deverakonda outside the stutter. Even here, Puri Jagannadh goes overboard with it in the second half. Literally, every word is spoken that way which is an overkill and becomes an irritating factor. One might face the same problem much earlier too.

However, a much bigger thing is at play here than mere performance. It is the star presence. Liger is the first ‘larger-than-life’ star turn for Vijay Deverakonda. It is what Puri Jagannadh brings to the table and shows us a glimpse of VD’s potential. A better subject selection is the need of the day to create a bigger impact – as simple as that.

Ananya Panday is ideally suited for the part even though she looks too young. She effortlessly pulls off the bubbly and charming rich girl part, but there is nothing more to it. It is due to the cringe scenes if she still manages to irritate or her part feels irritating.

Director-Puri-Jagannadh

Puri Jagannadh directs Liger. His last movie came more than three years ago, which is quite an unusual gap for him. However, looking at the scale and setting of Liger, one feels it might be justified for a change.

Like most mass masala films, the story is wafer-thin and predictable for Liger. We know where it’s headed and what will happen in the end. It is that predictable.

But, first, things start on an exciting note establishing the MMA sports backdrop in Mumbai. However, it soon gives way to an utterly predictable love story. We have seen similar tracks dime a dozen in the past. A fresh pairing or a unique characterisation is an exterior garnish. What remains inside is all old as hills.

The bigger disappointing thing here is the actual ‘MMA’ sport. Puri fails to explore the backdrop properly. Many things are glossed over, and the training is over during a montage song. The high which comes out of the ‘sport’ is entirely missing here. Everything is flat and rushed.

The interval bang continues the ordinariness. But, there is still an interest because one looks forward to the sport in the second half and the journey of the hero achieving his goal.

What happens in the second half is all the expectations come true, but it all happens within the first half an hour itself. It makes one think about the movie’s point in the first place. If it’s a sports drama with a love story, then it is almost over within the first half an hour itself. But, then Puri brings in heroine kidnapping thread and Mike Tyson episode to burn the rest of second half which makes no sense.

The actual sport takes place here, but again most of it is concluded in montages. The star does his aggressive mannerism with attitude, and they are fine in isolation, but nothing comes together to make an impact. The high of the action and sport is never felt.

The narrative then shifts to the US, highlighting the cluelessness. The entire last half an hour is one big rolling the eyes sequence. It’s the kind one would reject on paper only, but we have such a big movie made out of it.

Overall, Liger is a wasted opportunity, no doubt. And the blame should be entirely taken by the actor for accepting and the director for the story. The first half is decent at best, but the second half is unbearable.

Ananya-Pandey-Liger-Telugu-Movie-Review

Ramya Krishna has a decent role with a few emotional scenes. But, she lacks the meat on her part to leave an impression. There are no highlight sequences considering her potential. Ronit Roy as a coach is alright, but overall it’s part of a flat track. And hence, it appears ordinary.

Ali and Getup Seenu are seen doing comedy. The former’s humour doesn’t work, whereas the latter is good in a few scenes. Vishu is fine playing the routine antagonist-shaded part. Makrand Deshpande is seen in one scene and is alright. Mike Tyson regrettably plays a forgettable role. The rest of the actors have bits and pieces of roles which are instantly forgotten.

Music Director sunil-kashyap

Multiple composers provide music for Liger. They don’t have the Puri Jagannadh hit music appeal in Telugu, audio-wise. But trendy on-screen picturisation and coming in short bursts offer relief. Sunil Kashyap’s background is okay in parts, even on predictable lines.

Vishnu Sarma’s cinematography is neat. The visuals and the production values give Liger a biggie appeal that must be seen on the big screens. The editing by Junaid Siddique could have been better. By the end, Liger feels very lengthy and tiresome.

Vijay Deverakonda (Second Half) Not Even Half Baked Story Clueless final 40 minutes Predictability Cringe Scenes Heroine Track

Ramya-Krishna-Liger-Telugu-Movie-Review

A proper sports drama, especially in the second half, would be an alternative take. It would have had a predictable graph, though. The challenge lies in giving the right high, which Liger had plenty of opportunity due to its MMA background. Puri Jagannadh’s plans to provide a different twist have backfired big time here.

Liger Movie Review by M9News

Final Report:

Liger has a manageable, passable first half giving a pass to ordinariness. However, the second half takes a drastic turn on the negative side with a clueless pre-climax and climax. Liger is a massive opportunity wasted by Puri, unfortunately.

— The over usage of stammering while uttering dialogues quickly turns into a speed breaker. Its initial freshness is gone due to Vijay Deverakonda overdoing it.

— Second half started. Liger enters the ring and wins the first national championship and off to Los Angeles.

First Half Report:

A stuttering Vijay Deverakonda holds things together in the first half of Liger. He is the mainstay. The rest is typical and predictable Puri Jagannadh stuff with a flimsy storyline. A big second half is needed for the movie to take off.

— Mom and son goes to Mumbai for MMA. Liger is working as a helper and waiting for his chance to get trained.

— Show started. Liger opens his flashback, followed by an intro fight.

Liger USA Premiere updates, report shortly. Stay tuned.

Liger Pre-Release Talk:

The most-awaited mass action drama in the combination of Vijay Deverakonda and Puri Jagannadh is all set to hit the cinemas on August 25th. Interestingly their last releases came a week apart, three years ago.

While Vijay Deverakonda had a delayed release in between, Liger is the next release for Puri Jagannadh after scoring a blockbuster. It isn’t, therefore, a surprise that the movie has got tremendous hype. The budget, action cum kick-boxing backdrop and pan-India ambition have made it only bigger.

The craze and hype on the project are such that Vijay Deverakonda is looking at openings close to tier 1 stars. It means if the actor scores a hit, he would have a grosser on par with them. Liger’s success will then start the process of his rise to becoming a tier 1 star.

The songs haven’t clicked in Telugu, but the trailer has become one of the most talked about since its release. The aggressive promotions have steadily increased buzz as the movie gets closer to its release. It is reflected in the openings.

In the Telugu states and the US, Liger is getting the biggest release ever for Vijay Deverakonda. The advances are superb, and all everyone is waiting for now is the talk.

As always, M9.news will bring you the ‘First-On-Net’ Liger movie review, genuinely and honestly. Keep watching this space for our updates.
