Students are learning to create PowerPoint (or the Apple equivalent, Keynote presentations) in early elementary school.  Here are some simple PowerPoint themes to help you and your students get started!

PowerPoints are a ‘slide show’ on a computer. Each slide is like a page in a book.  Students can write their ‘story’, add pictures, sound effects, and videos.

Initially, have the student create a ‘paper’ draft of his/her first PowerPoint Presentation (PPT) to plan what the presentation will look like.  Depending the student’s age or abilities, the student can write an outline for each slide or write the full text for each slide.

Class Project

The classroom teacher should walk the class through step-by-step instructions on how to create PPT slides and if desired, how to add features.  Consider creating a class PPT presentation; divide the students into groups and have each group create a slide or several slides that will be combined for the class presentation.  For younger students, the class PPT could be an alphabet book.  Each slide would be a letter in the alphabet, with a picture that is associated with the letter.  Add a fun sound clip too!  Example:  The ‘A’ slide could have a picture of an airplane, the word ‘airplane’ (or sentence about an airplane) and a sound clip of an airplane flying.  Students can draw the picture or find a picture on-line.  The teacher can demonstrate creating the first slide or two, then the student groups can create the rest of the slide deck.

Another class project could be to create a PPT about their class.  This PPT could include a slide for each student and staff (take digital pictures of the class/staff), the classes’ schedule, class rules, etc.  This PPT can be shown to parents during Open House and each student can keep a copy of the PPT.

All About Me

If the students are learning to write, for homework, ask the parents to help the student answer these questions:

  • Slide 1:  Name
  • Slide 2: My family
  • Slide 3: My pet(s)
  • Slide 4: I like to _____.
  • Slide 5: I like to eat _____.
  • Slide 6: I like the color ____.
  • Slide 7: My favorite thing about school is ____.

Students can bring in pictures, send in digital pictures or draw pictures. For students who are working on writing/story skills, the classroom teacher may determine how many slides are required and/or the minimum length of text per slide.

Favorite Pet (Day as your pet)

  • Slide 1: Title, author, illustrator
  • Slide 2: Main characters (intro your pet)
  • Slide 3: Setting
  • Slide 4: Favorite activity #1
  • Slide 5: Favorite activity #2
  • Slide 6: Favorite activity #3
  • Slide 7: “My favorite part”

School Day

  • Slide 2: Main characters (teachers, classmates)
  • Slide 3: Setting (Mrs. B’s classroom)
  • Slide 7: Ending
  • Slide 8: “My favorite part”

Book Report

  • Slide 2: Main characters
  • Slide 4: Important event #1
  • Slide 5: Important event #2
  • Slide 6: Important event #3

Create a PPT about your student’s eye condition, IEP modifications, preferences, technology that the student uses, etc.  For ideas, see the post on Samantha: Self-Advocating Transition to Middle School Video .  A video like Samantha’s can be embedded into the PPT presentation or the video content can be written and incorporated into the slide deck.  For additional Advocacy ideas, see the post on College Preparedness #3: How to Explain Accommodations .

This Advocacy PPT can be shared with the IEP team, current staff and next year’s staff (at the end/beginning of the school year)

How to create an Accessible PPT

Create a PPT to share with Teachers (or peers) about how to make an accessible PPT or Word Document.

Teacher Hints

  • Once the students have prepared their presentations, discuss how to include accessibility features, such as adding alt text to images, so that the PPT is accessible to everyone.
  • Have each student write the content (text) of each slide before adding pictures, animations, sounds, and other features.
  • Teacher of the Visually Impaired Hint: Pre-teach how to create PowerPoint slides, if your student would benefit from one-on-one instruction.
  • For students who use a screen reader, be sure that pictures are named appropriately to identify the picture (vs. a random number).  Once the image is placed into the PPT, be sure to include Alt Text descriptions.
  • For information on how to create an accessible PPT, see the attached Creating Accessible PowerPoint and/or go to the post, 7 Ways to Create an Accessible PowerPoint.

Data Visualization Ideas to Help Students Present Overwhelming Amounts of Data in Creative Ways

Data visualization is all about using visuals to make sense of data. Students need to pull the main points from their extensive research, and present them by story telling while being mindful of their classmates’ collective attention span.

As far as student assignments go, storytelling with data is a daunting task for students and teachers alike. To keep your audience interested, consider using a non linear presentation that presents key concepts in creative ways.

Find out how a high school teacher like Jamie Barkin uses Piktochart to improve learning in the classroom for her students.

Pro tip: make your presentation as interactive as possible. Students have an attention span of two to three minutes per year of age. To keep minds from wandering off, include some interactive games or activities in the lesson. For example, if you conducted a lesson on the respiratory system, you could ask them to practice breathing techniques.

Maintain eye contact with your students, and you’ll get instant feedback on how interested they are in the interactive presentation.

Make School Presentation Visuals Without the Hassle of Making Them From Scratch

School presentations, when done right, can help teachers engage their classes and improve students’ education effectively by presenting information using the right presentation topic.

If you’re pressed for time and resources to make your school presentation visuals , choose a template from Piktochart’s template gallery . Aside from the easy customization options, you can also print and download these templates to your preferred format.

Piktochart also professional templates to create infographics , posters , brochures , reports , and more.

Creating school-focused, engaging, and interactive presentations can be tedious at first, but with a little bit of research and Piktochart’s handy templates, you’re going to do a great job!

helping kids use PowerPoint for presentations and serious learning fun

helping kids use powerpoint

Kids are sharing their learning, and they’re learning about sharing. Or at least they could be!

My kids are a bit technically-savvy, love anything laptop, iPad, or DS–so for International Night this year, I took a little time to show my kids a few things about PowerPoint.

And honestly? They loved it.

It wasn’t all that involved–it was by no means the end-all PowerPoint intro. Just a touch. Just a taste.

And instead of making double work for us, we used the PowerPoint slides we created to decorate our France board.

Here’s the skinny. . .

  • Helping Kids Use PowerPoint for Presentations and Serious Fun: I suppose the ‘serious fun’ part may be a bit of an exaggeration, but the bottom line is that using PowerPoint for our France presentation for our school’s International Night sure upped the kids’ interest factor.
And doesn’t that count for something? Last year, we did Madagascar for International Night. This year? France. Naturally. Maddy’s choice. The kids love using Pixie , so Owen jumped right in and made us a France flag to include. I started off by asking Maddy, Owen, and Cora if they wanted to try something a little bit new for their project this year–if they wanted to use a bit of technology alongside our poster for International Night. They did. So we got rolling. I said, Okay, well we’ll try a tool called ‘PowerPoint’ that I’ve used for many of my own presentations and that Daddy also uses for his presentations at work. With PowerPoint, you can make slides that show your information. And then you can print your slides. I thought it would be cool to make a PowerPoint presentation that we could play during International Night and use the slides to decorate our big poster. Does that sound okay to you? It did. Phew. So we began: 1. We built background knowledge on the format . I showed them a really quick example of a PowerPoint presentation I used for a meeting I had a few months ago so that they knew how a PowerPoint presentation could look:     2. We started fresh . I opened a new presentation [File -> New Presentation]. I showed them all of the ways we could change basic format and fonts. We chose one that we thought would be simple and clear but bright and cool: Newsprint.   3.  We brainstormed .  We wrote down all of the topics that we wanted to include in our presentation, trying to cover all of the things people would want to know about France. We came up with: Intro, flag, food, clothes, language, people, art, buildings, history, school, and sports. Then I showed them how to create new slides: [Insert–> New Slide OR Insert–> Duplicate Slide]. Maddy set us up with a new slide for each of our topics.   4. We researched.   We jumped over to PBS LearningMedia . We used KidRex . We used Time for Kids and Kids National Geographic .   The kids came up with the search terms , something that we’ve done quite often in the past. We went simple, and we found what we needed: France map; food in france; france and clothes.       5. We created. For the sake of time, we added information to the slides as we found it. We did our best to read information, put it into our own words by summarizing it, and then typing it into each slide. Because our focus with this was simply to get them some basic information on France and to get them familiar with PowerPoint, I didn’t worry too much about proper citation of photos and information. Believe me, as a former high school English teacher, I totally understand how important that is; however, I had to choose my battles here. Instead, I created a ‘Resources’ page at the end of our slideshow, and anything we took from the internet, we added to that page. I felt it was enough to emphasize the importance of not just grabbing from the internet, but it also emI showed them how to When we needed images, I showed them how to change our search terms on Google from ‘Search’ to ‘Images’ and drag the ones we wanted to use to the desktop. Then we could easily insert the new images into our presentation. 6. We added transitions .  In a really basic way.  Since I knew we’d keep our presentation on a loop, I knew I wanted to have the transitions advance after a few seconds, so we changed that, and we unclicked ‘on mouse click’. 7. We moved slides . I showed Maddy, Owen, and Cora how to view the presentation with the slides on the left side [view–> normal] OR [view–> slide sorter] so that we could easily move slides into a different order. We moved them around in a way that we thought made the most sense. 8. We saved it. We saved it as a movie [file–> save as –> movie] so that it would loop while we stood at our booth. 9. We added, edited, and revised. And soon our presentation totally rocked the house. 10. We printed . We printed each slide four on a page because we thought that was the best size for our poster.  We followed [print –> preview –>images per page –> four], but I’m sure there are a million other ways to do it. 11. We blinged our board .  We covered it in France’s colors: red, white, and blue. We added letters at the top: FRANCE. We cut out our slides with fancy scissors. And we mounted each slide on another piece of construction paper.  Because doesn’t everything look so much more beautiful when mounted on colored paper? And we blinged a bit more, signed our work, and we were finished. 12. We gathered our French materials .  Thank goodness for our good friends whose grandmother is French and for my husband who has some French connections at the school where he works because our French display rocked. We had flags, children’s books, a beret, French money, posters, and more. And we picked up some croissants at the grocery store, c ut them in thirds, and gave our friends a little (teeny) taste of authentic France. Or as authentic as we could muster with us not being very French for real. We set our France Presentation on autoplay, and we were good. To. Go. Woot. Want a few more advanced PowerPoint links for your Digital Kids?   Check out: PowerPoint in the Classroom by ACT e-Learning for Kids PowerPoint

And really? That’s that. The kids had fun. I had fun. And they were proud of their display.

Was it perfect? Hardly. Is this PowerPoint tutorial perfect. Far from it.

But it’s here to prove that with a little bit of effort, we can give our kids a taste of something more technologically advanced than they may think they are capable of. And perhaps this little touch of PowerPoint may give them more confidence when it comes to doing another presentation down the road.

Hmm it seems like your website ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.

I too am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to the whole thing. Do you have any suggestions for newbie blog writers? I’d really appreciate it.

7 Ways Elementary Students Can Benefit From PowerPoint

Teaching elementary students is an important job you can do in many different ways. Parents and teachers often brainstorm the best ways to teach children in school; one popular method is using PowerPoint. So, what are some ways that PowerPoint can aid young students?

We all want the best for our kids, and PowerPoint can make learning easier and help your child progress. Teachers can also use PowerPoint to enrich their students’ experience and make classroom learning fun. Please read on to discover some of the best ways that students can benefit from PowerPoint.

Table of Contents

1. PowerPoint Videos Are a Learning Aid

Kids love videos, and teaching with them has numerous benefits for elementary students. It is a widespread opinion that children can learn more when videos are a part of the curriculum. With the digital age upon us, kids are often more receptive to video learning experiences than the old-fashioned teaching methods .

Suppose you only have an hour to teach a class a science experiment or show them how something grows over time. In that case, you can incorporate a video into your lesson that can use time-lapse or skip ahead so that your students can see the final result of something in much less time.

Students Learn by Seeing Real-Life Situations Unfold

When you incorporate a video into your social studies lesson, you can add a video that relates to the instance you are trying to explain. Suppose you want to show the importance of communication at home. Including a video that demonstrates positive interaction in a household can be beneficial.

However, using videos in your PowerPoint presentation can help students benefit by giving them another tool that allows them to learn and understand a subject. It also gives teachers a chance to relax and gather their thoughts which can help them provide better education to their class because they are rested and ready to continue teaching their students after a short break.

2. You Can Help Children Learn With PowerPoint Images

3. powerpoint allows students and teachers to collaborate..

PowerPoint is an excellent method for teaching students how to collaborate with classmates and teachers.

Here is a video from Envato Tuts+ on how you can collaborate on PowerPoints:

How to Collaborate as a Team on PowerPoint

Collaboration between teachers and their students can make the lessons more dynamic. Teachers know a lot, but students can sometimes add something the instructor wouldn’t have imagined.

Collaborating with other students and teachers also allows children to have fun. Add some excitement to your lessons by giving children an opportunity to discuss with each other what they think should be included in their studies or letting them choose an image or video.

This use of team-building gives students a chance to be creative and have a good time when they are learning.

When you allow children to collaborate with you, the teacher, and the other kids, you give your elementary students a better chance of having a positive view of themselves.

4. Students Can Review Lessons on PowerPoint at Home

Some of the very best ways that you can incorporate visual tools into your lessons to help organize your curriculum and give your students the best chance at learning and retention include:

There are numerous conditions that students have that can benefit from using PowerPoint. Some of these are:

Furthermore,  it doesn’t just benefit students with autism. There are numerous disabilities ranging from mild to severe that affect children. Many of these children with disabilities learn better when they use PowerPoint.

It is most likely beneficial for children with disabilities to learn with PowerPoint because they have so many different learning styles at their disposal. Whether they are looking at an image or video or reading the words, there are more ways to learn than with a traditional lecture.

12 Interactive PowerPoint Activities Your Students will Love

12 Interactive PowerPoint Activities Your Students will Love

At Slides with Friends, we're all about trying to make your life as a teacher a little bit easier. We want to provide as many tools, tips, and as much support as possible. That's why we share on topics like Review Games , Student Wellness Activities , and Tools for Measuring Student Engagement .

While we usually focus on how you can use Slides with Friends specifically, we want to bring you something a little different this time. We've compiled 12 of our favorite interactive PowerPoint activities you can use with your students. All of the activities are designed to engage your students in ways they'll love. Even better, these activities let you use a tool you're probably already familiar with.

And read to the end for an exciting new announcement!

Annotated Images

Annotated images let you teach history (or literature! or geography!) using detailed annotated images from your latest lesson. We're big fans of using visuals in the classroom. And with good reason! A study released by the Journal of Education and Practice found visual information is mapped better in students' minds across multiple types of thinking skills. By introducing more visuals to a lesson plan, and using tools like PowerPoint, lessons are more likely to be remembered.

powerpoint presentation for primary students

You can introduce annotated images on PowerPoint by picking out relevant images and adding captions or labels to them and presenting them as you teach. You can add descriptions, draw arrows, or points of interest on the image.

Check out this fun example from Ditch That Textbook .

powerpoint presentation for primary students

Even better, provide a few unique images of the lesson you just presented and have the students create their own annotations. Then, as a class, have each student present their image in PowerPoint.

Photos as Story Prompts

More visual learning! Using photos as storytelling prompts can be a great way to spark your student's creativity! PowerPoint is an ideal platform to display the photos, as it provides you the flexibility and versatility to show one photo at a time in case you want the students to focus exclusively on that image.

Simply ask them to write a story based on the photo in 1-3 sentences, and compare answers afterward. Encouraging different interpretations of a single image also helps foster critical thinking skills and encourages students to use their own perspectives when expressing their ideas.

Interactive Maps

Interactive maps are a fantastic way for students to learn about their world without leaving the classroom! And one of the easiest ways to show off these maps is through PowerPoint. Plus, PowerPoint makes adding hyperlinks to specific places (like pins), so you can click through areas of interest without having to open up a separate browser page.

If you're looking for a simple tutorial on how to create a lesson-based interactive map, check out this one from eLearning Industry . For more exploratory maps, check out the tutorial below (which includes the free template!).

Battleship Review Game

We love a good game here at Slides with Friends, so it shouldn't be a surprise to see so many options on this list. However, before doing research for this article, we had no idea Battleship could be played on PowerPoint!

In the template below, you can add words and to reveal the space beneath the words, students have to:

- Conjugate the Verb

- Use the Word in a Sentence

- Define the Word

Or one of any fun combinations.

We love this idea for language classes especially, but can also be used for vocabulary in any subject.

You can check out the whole presentation here.

Crossword Puzzle

Crossword puzzles are a timeless and popular way of testing knowledge and keeping minds alert. They can be used in the classroom to reinforce concepts and skills related to any subject, making them a great teaching tool. Crosswords can help students learn new vocabulary words, polish their grammar, understand history or science topics better, or firm up mathematics concepts.

And an easy way to do a crossword in the classroom is by using PowerPoint. You simply need to create a blank and a filled puzzle on PowerPoint and then fill it out with your class.

Check out this step-by-step guide on the best way to quickly create a crossword puzzle in PowerPoint.

Tests and quizzes are absolutely no fun, so if you can find an easy way to quiz your students in a fun way, that's a win-win! One of our favorite ways to do this is by creating a quiz show on PowerPoint.

By using those hyperlinks we mentioned above, you can easily create your own questions, assign point values, and include sound effects (or music!) to make your students feel like they're actually in a game show!

This 6 Steps to Create a Multiple Choice Quiz is a great way to start designing your next PowerPoint quiz. If you're looking for multiple ways to create a quiz show for your students, check out the detailed tutorial below .

Video Gallery

We've talked quite a bit about visuals here, not just because PowerPoint is a great tool for visuals, but because visuals are so extremely helpful in the classroom.

One way to incorporate visual activities into your classes with PowerPoint is by creating video galleries. This is especially useful if you have limited access to videos and need to play them in a certain order.

You can create a video gallery presentation by manually inserting the clips into slides or creating a series of hyperlinks to take the class through certain processes. You can also add captions, notes, and questions for further discussion.

Scavenger Hunt

A fun activity to incorporate in your classroom through the power of PowerPoint is a review scavenger hunt.

Scavenger hunts can be an engaging way to go over the material and test knowledge at the beginning or end of a unit. PowerPoint is a great tool to use when designing a scavenger hunt if you are working with students online. With the tool, you can hide clues in images, ask questions that are linked to hyperlinks, and even add video clips as hints.

Scavenger hunts also offer quite a bit of versatility in the classroom. You can have students work individually or in groups, depending on your goals for the lesson.

You can reference our Virtual Scavenger Hunt guide, which includes several hunt lists, for ideas on what to bring to your students.

Choose Your Own Adventure

PowerPoint slides can also be used to create engaging interactive experiences. PowerPoint's slide-linking feature allows you to jump between slides with the click of a button, providing users with their own “Choose Your Own Adventure”-style gaming experience. As a result, you can create an interactive story with a different ending each and every time.

While this activity will take quite a bit of upfront work, once you have it done, you can use it for countless classes.

We highly recommend this tutorial by The Training Lady on how to plan out your next PowerPoint adventure!

powerpoint presentation for primary students

Picture Reveal

Picture Reveal is a great PowerPoint activity that encourages students to think critically. In this activity, you can present an obscured picture and provides clues as to what it could be. Students must then utilize their knowledge and logic skills to work out what the picture is by eliminating incorrect answers based on the clues provided until they eventually get the correct answer.

Picture reveals are a great way to review material from previous lessons or current topics. They can also act as an introduction to a new lesson. Plus, we can't stress this enough, visuals!

Word Search

Word search games are a great way to review vocabulary and help students learn new words. Using PowerPoint, you can create custom word searches by entering the target vocabulary words in a grid. Then draw lines connecting each letter to form words! You can even add visuals that correspond with the theme of your word search for an extra challenge.

Word search games are perfect for when you have some leftover time during class or if you want to review material from earlier units. A PowerPoint word search is also great for helping students recognize spelling patterns in unfamiliar words and promoting active learning as they look for the hidden words in the puzzle.

Student Presentation

powerpoint presentation for primary students

One of the best ways to get your students engaged in the classroom is to have them lead the show. And PowerPoint is such an awesome tool for students to present their own material.

With a little guidance, you can have older students create mini-presentations about topics they've studied in class or even on their own. Not only will this allow you to assess what they've retained from studying, but it also allows your students to practice public speaking skills and become more comfortable with online presentations - essential in today's digital world!

With PowerPoint, you can easily turn any student project into an engaging presentation everyone will enjoy.

Use Slides with Friends for Your PowerPoint Activities

PowerPoint has been a vital tool in the teacher toolbox for decades. There are so many fantastic ways to use PowerPoint to engage and interact with your classroom.

Slides with Friends is excited to announce a new feature for our slide decks - A PowerPoint upload!

Now you can create your slides in an already-known program, or use slide shows you've already made, and with a click of a button upload them to Slides with Friends!

Maintain consistency: Use a consistent design throughout your presentation. Choose a clean and professional template and stick to a limited color palette and font selection. Consistency creates a cohesive visual experience for your students.

Use animations and transitions sparingly: While animations and transitions can add visual interest, too many or excessive effects can be distracting. Use them judiciously to emphasize key points or to reveal information gradually.

Practice good slide structure: Divide your content into sections or topics and use clear headings. Number your slides or include a progress indicator to help students track their progress during the presentation.

Engage your audience: Incorporate interactive elements such as quizzes, polls, or discussion questions into your slides. This helps to promote active participation and ensures students remain attentive and engaged.

Provide clear navigation: Use hyperlinks or navigation buttons to enable easy movement between slides or sections. This allows you to adapt to the flow of the class, respond to questions, or revisit previous content as needed.

Incorporate multimedia: PowerPoint supports audio and video files, so consider including relevant multimedia content to enhance understanding. For example, you can embed videos, audio clips, or simulations that demonstrate concepts or provide real-life examples.

Practice and time your presentation: Rehearse your presentation beforehand to ensure a smooth flow and familiarize yourself with the content. Pay attention to your pace and timing to ensure you cover all the material within the allocated time.

Remember, PowerPoint should complement your teaching, not replace it. Use it as a tool to enhance your lessons and engage your students effectively.

Interactive PowerPoint presentations in class

03.08.2023   •  #powerpoint #tips.

Presentations can be a great way to make your lessons exciting and informative and to informative and to better communicate information to your students. Many students do not feel engaged and integrated enough with normal presentations. To increase the attention span and arouse enthusiasm, interactive elements such as quizzes, word clouds or feedback rounds can help, to significantly increase learning success.

Common problems that arise during presentations in class

Presentations are a central element of the learning process, but they often involve challenges that need to be overcome. We have highlighted four common problems that often accompany presentations in class:

1. Lack of interaction

Standard PowerPoint presentations offer limited opportunities for audience interaction and engagement. They lack features to gather feedback or answer questions in real time and respond to requests.

2. Student passivity

Students are often forced into a passive role when the focus is only on the slides and the presenter simply delivers them in a heavy-handed manner.

3. Time managementt

Creating good presentations can take a lot of time and can be a difficult task for some.

4. Information Overload

Too much information at once, without a break can overwhelm and scare away younger students in particular. It's hard to focus on what's important and grasp the key messages.

4 ideas for interactive presentations in classes

Interactive presentations demonstrably increase learning success and retention. This is also confirmed by a study of the Keele University . The results here show very clearly to what extent involving the audience increases attention as well as knowledge transfer. It was found that the grades of the participants improved by 3.7%, as well as and the failure rate was reduced by 4.4% over the whole school year. were reduced.

1. Interactive classroom engagement

Students can ask questions anonymously and provide interactive feedback. This encourages active participation in the classroom and creates an open learning environment. Teachers could respond spontaneously to questions or interesting discussion points and customize lessons.

Here are some ways to better engage students in the classroom:

  • Voting on the desired teaching material : Teachers can include an interactive survey where students choose from a variety of topics they would like to learn more about in class. This allows students to help shape the lesson and contribute their interests.
  • Surveys in which subject areas the students need more support : Teachers can start a survey to identify areas where students are having difficulty or need more explanation. This can help to tailor the lessons to the needs of the students.
  • Anonymous questions about ambiguities in specific subject areas : For example, students can use SlideLizard to anonymously ask questions about topics they didn't fully understand. These questions can then be discussed in class to clarify misunderstandings and deepen understanding.

2. Brainstorming and unleashing creativity

Interactive slides enable teachers and students to collaboratively brainstorming sessions into the presentation, and to create a presentation. The feature allows ideas to be collected and structured on virtual pinboards. and structure them. The result is an interactive collaboration that unleashes creativity and promotes the exchange of ideas. encourages.

Here are some ideas on how to incorporate brainstorming in the classroom:

  • Brainstorming for possible solutions : When addressing complex problems or challenges, teachers can ask students to brainstorm different solutions together on an interactive slide. This encourages teamwork and creative thinking.
  • Collection of ideas for projects : Teachers can use an interactive slide where students can collect creative ideas for upcoming projects. These ideas can then be discussed and developed together.
  • Solutions for social challenges : Students can brainstorm and discuss ideas for addressing real-world social problems such as poverty, inequality, or pollution.

3. Learning with quizzes

Interactive quizzes are a highlight of PowerPoint presentations. Teachers can check what students have already learned in a playful way and track the learning success. The students in turn experience a motivating sense of achievement when they answer the quiz questions correctly. This makes the learning process not only entertaining, but also effective.

Here are some concrete ideas for how teachers can use quizzes in a meaningful way in the classroom:

  • Short knowledge tests during the presentation : Teachers can include a short quiz after each section of a presentation to ensure that students understand the key concepts before moving on to the next section.
  • Preparation for exams : Teachers can create more comprehensive quizzes that cover the entire subject matter and help students prepare for upcoming exams.
  • Continuous knowledge checks : Teachers can create regular, short quizzes to ensure that knowledge learned builds and deepens consistently over time.

4. Flexibility in teaching through discussions

Additional slides can also be used or set aside to be be flexible to the needs of the students. Teachers can react spontaneously to respond spontaneously to questions or interesting discussion points and individually.

Here are some ways teachers can use discussions to engage students more fully in the classroom:

  • Small group discussions : Teachers can divide students into small groups and have them discuss on different slides. Each group can then present their findings or conclusions.
  • Feedback and reflexion : After a presentation or lecture, teachers can ask questions on a slide that encourage students to reflect on what they have heard. These questions can then be discussed together.
  • Visualize discussions as a word cloud : The students' contributions and thoughts from a discussion can be visualized on a slide as a word cloud. Frequently mentioned words are displayed larger, which draws the focus to dominant topics or trends. This provides a visual summary of the discussion and encourages analysis of the most important aspects.

‘Clear reticence’ among some students to report bullying in secondary schools - report

One-third of post-primary students feel it is not safe to express themselves fully in school.

One-third of young people in post-primary schools do not feel it is safe to express themselves fully in school, according to a new report.

The report, by Department of Education inspectors, looks at bullying behaviour in schools at both primary and secondary level.

It is based on survey responses completed by a large number of teachers, school principals, parents, others who work in schools, and by 2,346 children and young people.

It found that approximately one-tenth of primary and special school students “occasionally, rarely, or never felt either a sense of belonging, or that it was safe to express themselves authentically in school”.

The report identified “a clear reticence” among some students to report bullying behaviour.

While there was a consensus that bullying behaviour was not tolerated in schools, children and young people indicated a lack of confidence in teachers’ ability to consistently identify signs of bullying.

This perception was more prevalent among young people in post-primary schools.

Just more than one-third of children at primary and post-primary level identified discriminatory attitudes towards their appearance as the main reason for negative commentary from other students.

Negative perceptions relating to their interests, abilities or lifestyles were also identified as reasons why they were singled out.

Second level students identified background, lifestyle, and interests as other key reasons.

Chief inspector Yvonne Keating said the feedback, particularly from the post-primary students who responded to the survey, indicated “a need for more concerted action”.

The report recommended that schools “work to enhance their procedures for reporting concerns about bullying behaviour to ensure that children and young people feel able to report”.

It also called for comprehensive audits of school environments and full implementation of curricula that support Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE), especially at post-primary level.

Most children and young people in primary and special schools found their classroom-based learning about bullying behaviour to be helpful, but a considerable proportion of respondents at post-primary level did not consider this to be the case for them.

Paxton blocks Biden’s Title IX rule protecting LGBTQ+ students in Texas

by: Anthony Torres

Updated: Jun 19, 2024 / 09:30 AM CDT

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton blocked the Biden Administration’s Title IX rule protecting LGBTQ+ students from sex-based discrimination and harassment, Paxton’s office announced in a Tuesday release.

The rule would have protected all students and employees from all sex discrimination, including restoring and strengthening full protection from sexual violence and other sex-based harassment.

Paxton said in the release he won a “major” victory against the Biden Administration’s Department of Education’s attempt to rewrite Title IX to force Texas schools to adopt radical “transgender” policies in violation of state and federal law.

“Joe Biden’s unlawful effort to weaponize Title IX for his extremist agenda has been stopped in its tracks,” Paxton said in the release. “Threatening to withhold education funding by forcing states to accept ‘transgender’ policies that put women in danger was plainly illegal. Texas has prevailed on behalf of the entire Nation.”

The Biden Administration’s changes to Title IX are set to go into effect nationwide on Aug. 1, except in states where it has been blocked.

USC student, 19, arrested in fatal stabbing of burglary suspect

by: Josh DuBose

Posted: Jun 18, 2024 / 10:47 PM PDT

Updated: Jun 18, 2024 / 11:25 PM PDT

A 19-year-old business student at the University of Southern California who was arrested on suspicion of murder in the fatal stabbing of a burglary suspect on USC’s Greek Row in Los Angeles Monday night has been identified.

The incident was reported around 8:15 p.m. in the 700 block of West 28th Street in the University Park neighborhood.

Arriving officers found an unidentified man suffering from stab wounds in an alleyway. He was later pronounced dead at the scene, officials with the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed.

Authorities say the Boyle Heights native, who is now in custody, and two friends witnessed the 27-year-old homeless man burglarizing cars. The 19-year-old reportedly confronted the man with a knife before stabbing him to death.

USC student arrested for fatal stabbing on Greek row

Gallegos, who has no criminal record and stayed at the scene to cooperate with law enforcement, told police he was acting in self-defense and that the 27-year-old burglary suspect said he was armed with a gun.

The 19-year-old’s friends who were with him at the time have not been arrested.

A housekeeper at the students’ Delta Tau Delta Fraternity said everyone in the house is very concerned about what happened.

“They’re upset, sad and worried,” she told KTLA’s Omar Lewis. “It’s very tragic for both families.”

Some residents on Greek Row say they’re already on edge from previous incidents involving property crimes there and because the back alley where the stabbing occurred is near a homeless encampment.

Fatal stabbing on USC's Greek Row

“When a lot of this stuff occurs repetitively, you have a lot more students who want to be proactive,” Greek Row resident Liam Shi told KTLA. “I don’t even know what I would’ve done in that situation.

Another student, a property manager on Greek Row just two doors down from Delta Tau Delta, told KTLA that her building has been broken into and that this incident has left students confused and asking questions.

“Someone lost a life yesterday, so I feel horrible that happened,” the student, identified only as Allison, said. “At the same time, I’m a student myself. I’m a woman. I think of all of us being students, anybody really, you’re in a vulnerable position. What are you supposed to do, wait until the gun gets pulled out in front of you?”

As for Gallegos, who is being held on $2 million bail, he now faces an uncertain future.

Regents approve a 2024-25 tuition increase for UI students

The Iowa Board of Regents has approved a tuition increase for University of Iowa students to address inflationary costs and continued support of student success initiatives.

At its June 13 meeting, the board approved a $270 increase to undergraduate tuition for resident students and a $395 increase to undergraduate tuition for nonresident students. For graduate students, the approved tuition increase is $394 for both resident and nonresident students. The increases will take effect at the start of the fall 2024 semester for all students.

“This tuition increase will support initiatives that drive student success and give our students the top-tier academic experience that Iowa is known for,” says Kevin Kregel, executive vice president and provost. “Even with this increase, Iowa offers high-quality education at an affordable cost, and we are proud to continue to do so.”

For the 2024-25 academic year, the Board of Regents requested $14.5 million in additional state funding for the UI, $10 million for a rural health care partnership, and $4.5 million to cover general inflationary increases. The Iowa Legislature approved a $5.4 million increase, which will support rural health care initiatives.

Undergraduate resident tuition and fees at Iowa remain among the most affordable for students in the university’s peer group.

2023-24 Resident Undergraduate Tuition and Fees Comparison

Some graduate and professional colleges will keep their tuition rates flat, while the board approved slightly higher increases for specific programs based on costs.

Tuition will not increase for the College of Nursing or the Carver College of Medicine’s MD, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and Master of Science in Athletic Training programs.

Tuition increases were approved for the following:

  • College of Law: a 3.5% increase for nonresident students.
  • College of Pharmacy: a 0.75% increase for resident and nonresident students in the PharmD program.
  • Radiation Sciences Program, Carver College of Medicine: a $1,617 increase for on-campus resident and nonresident undergraduate students.
  • Master of Clinical Nutrition, Carver College of Medicine: a 3% increase for resident students.
  • Physician Assistant Program, Carver College of Medicine: a 2.5% increase for resident and nonresident students.

The board also approved a mandatory student fee increase of $49. The extra funds will go to technology, medical supplies, counseling services, student activities, and recreation facilities.

2024 federal budget deficit projection rises to nearly $2 trillion

The new projection comes from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office,

In a new projection from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the federal budget deficit – the gap between government revenue vs. spending – will be $1.9 trillion for the 2024 fiscal year.

The deficit forecast is $400 billion higher than the CBO’s last estimate in February, an increase of 27%. The CBO cites a handful of reasons, including recent legislation to provide $95 billion of aid to Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific region, which Congress passed in April after months of delay, increasing Medicaid spending and $70 billion attributed to the 2023 bank failures because of a slower-than-expected recovery of payments by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

But one of the chief reasons for the projection increase was President Joe Biden's student loan policies, including cancelling loans, adjusting loan balances and implementing a new repayment plan that offers more subsidies to borrowers. The policies have added $145 billion to the deficit, the CBO said.

Biden has so far cancelled $167 billion in loans for 4.75 million borrowers, with a plan on the way to increase that reach to nearly 30 million borrowers in total. The debt relief has mostly focused on people who were already enrolled in repayment plans that pledged eventual debt forgiveness, like income-driven repayment plans that offer relief after 20-25 years of payment, or the public service loan forgiveness program which offers relief after 10 years. Both programs were poorly coordinated and often left people unable to access their debt relief at the end of their payment plans. About $119 billion of the total debt relief has so far targeted those two programs. The administration has made the case that the debt relief could boost short-term consumer spending and have positive effects on borrowers’ homeownership and entrepreneurship capabilities, but critics have raised concerns about the cost to the federal government.

Other factors have also increased the deficit over the last few months, including higher interest rates – which make it more expensive for the government to pay its debt.

And there's a looming 2024 election issue at play, too: The continuing impact of the 2017 Trump tax cut legislation, which has added trillions to the deficit. If former president Trump wins office, he says he will extend the legislation, which the CBO predicted could end up costing about $5 trillion over 10 years.

The White House sought to home in on that tax legislation to explain the deficit increase, particularly as the 2025 expiration date for the legislation nears.

"After the prior administration added $8 trillion to the debt, new CBO numbers show that the Trump tax windfalls for billionaires and corporations continue to come at the expense of the American people by driving up deficits," Andrew Bates, White House spokesperson, said in a statement.

"Republican officials are already plotting to grow the deficit even more in 2025 with tax handouts to the corporations who are keeping prices high even as inflation falls," Bates said.

Total U.S. national debt is on track to top $56 trillion by 2034, the CBO said.

For deficit hawks, the latest increase is yet another warning that the nation's debt requires congressional reform.

“With debt growing out of control, we need leadership now more than ever. This should be domestic issue number one in the presidential campaign. It’s time for Presidents Biden and Trump to put forward plans to fix our debt. And it’s long past time for Congress to act,” Maya MacGuineas, president of the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said in a statement.
