Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of courier company you are operating and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a courier company that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of courier businesses?

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the courier service industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the courier service industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy, particularly if your research identifies market trends.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section:

  • How big is the industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your courier company? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: small businesses, e-commerce businesses, manufacturing companies, law firms, printing companies, and healthcare providers.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of courier company you operate. Clearly, e-commerce businesses would respond to different marketing promotions than healthcare providers, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve. Because most courier businesses primarily serve customers living in their same city or town, such demographic information is easy to find on government websites.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other courier companies.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes standard delivery providers such as USPS and UPS. You need to mention such competition as well.

With regards to direct competition, you want to describe the other courier services with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be couriers located very close to your location.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What types of courier services do they offer?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide better packaging and delivery services?
  • Will you provide services that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.  

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a courier company, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of courier company that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to courier services, will you provide custom packaging services, fax and print services or any other services?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your courier company. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your courier company located in a busy retail district, professional district, industrial area, etc. Discuss how your location might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your courier marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local websites
  • Social media marketing
  • Local radio advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your courier company including speaking with customers, receiving deliveries, performing delivery logistics, and packaging and delivering items.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to make your 100th delivery, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your courier service into a new city or establish services in a new market.  

Management Team

To demonstrate your courier company’s ability to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing courier businesses. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing courier services or successfully running small businesses.  

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you gain 10 new customers per week or per month? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets : Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your courier company, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a courier company:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment and supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your office location lease or a demonstration of how you will perform delivery logistics and recordkeeping.

According to  NASA's eclipse safety website , the agency does not recommend specific eyewear for eclipse viewing but  does  recommend glasses that come with an IOS compliance label, or standard, of 12312-2, on the packaging. The eyewear may also be labeled IOS 12312-2:2015. According to NASA, torn, scratched, or otherwise damaged eyewear should be discarded.

There are four things likely to happen to animal behavior during the April 8, 2024 eclipse, according to Erica Cartmill, professor of anthropology, animal behavior and cognitive science at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana:

  • Animals won't do anything unusual.
  • Animals will do evening behaviors. For example, if a dog is used to a bedtime treat, he may go to the kitchen to wait for it.
  • Animals will display signs of increased anxiety such as scratching, yawning, circling and pacing or if they are animals that typically flock together, they will start grouping.
  • Animals display unexpected behavior.

Fast-food restaurants in California are laying off workers to prepare for the $20 minimum wage hike

Fast-food restaurants in California are laying off hundreds of workers to cut back on costs as they prepare for the state's $20 minimum wage for fast-food workers that comes into force in April, a new report by The Wall Street Journal details.

Two franchisees for Pizza Hut , with restaurants across various counties in California, have said they'd lay off around 1,200 workers as they scrap delivery-driver roles to rely on third-party delivery instead.

Southern California Pizza Company, a Pizza Hut franchisee, said it planned to lay off nearly 850 workers in February, according to filings made under California's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act in December and viewed by Business Insider.

In December, another Pizza Hut franchisee, PacPizza, and its affiliates filed plans to lay off more than 350 workers in February.

And in February, Excalibur Pizza LLC, a Round Table Pizza franchisee, said it planned to lay off 70 workers in April, WARN Act filings show.

Round Table Pizza, which has more than 400 locations in the US, mainly along the West Coast, told BI that the employees being laid off were delivery drivers and that Excalibur was moving to third-party delivery services. The company said it saw the layoffs as a "transfer of jobs," with more workers required at third-party delivery services instead.

"That said, delivery service fees may increase, and the customer will most likely see even higher prices as a result of this ongoing shift," Round Table Pizza's statement continued. "This is the reality of today's restaurants."

Alexander Johnson, who owns 10 Auntie Anne's and Cinnabon locations in California, told the Journal that the new law would have otherwise cost him an extra $470,000 in labor a year.

Franchisees are worried about higher prices spooking diners

California is raising the state's minimum wage for workers at limited-service restaurants to $20 an hour from April 1 — 25% higher than its general minimum wage.

The law only applies to chains with at least 60 locations nationwide, though analysts note that it could lead to wage hikes at other restaurants and workplaces in the state as they try to compete for talent.

The legislation — especially in its original form as the FAST Recovery Act — faced fierce opposition from the restaurant industry, with some chains saying it would drive up operating costs so high that they'd have to lay off workers and charge customers more.

The franchisees generally set prices, and some are concerned that higher prices could scare off diners .

"I can't charge $20 for Happy Meals," Scott Rodrick, owner of 18 McDonald's restaurants in Northern California, told the Journal. He said that in the hunt to save money amid the wage increase, he was "leaving no stones unturned."

Another McDonald's franchisee who owns restaurants in Los Angeles County previously told KTLA 5 News that her food would become "unaffordable" if she raised prices enough to cover the wage increase.

Brian Hom, the owner of two Vitality Bowl açaí bowl restaurants in San Jose, told the Journal he's raising menu prices by about 10% to cover the higher wages. He's also running his stores with two employees, down from four, which he said is slowing down order times.

"I'm definitely not going to hire anymore," Hom told the Journal.

Vitality Bowls has taken "significant measures to optimize profitability," like changing its menu and improving its tech, CEO Roy Gilad told BI in a statement. The company is "well prepared" to offset higher costs, he said.

IR-2024-88, April 2, 2024

WASHINGTON — With the April 15 tax deadline approaching, the IRS reminds taxpayers there is still time file their federal income tax return electronically and request direct deposit.

Filing electronically reduces tax return errors as tax software does the calculations, flags common errors and prompts taxpayers for missing information. Most people qualify for electronic filing at no cost and, when they choose direct deposit, receive their refund within 21 days.

Free electronic filing options

Taxpayers with income of $79,000 or less in 2023 can use IRS Free File guided tax software now through Oct 15. IRS Free Fillable forms , a part of this program, is available at no cost to taxpayers of any income level and provides electronic forms for people to fill out and e-file themselves.

IRS Direct File is now open to all eligible taxpayers in 12 pilot states to decide if it is the right option for them to file their 2023 federal tax returns online, for free, directly with the IRS. Go to the Direct File website for more information about Direct File pilot eligibility and the 12 participating states.

Through a network of community partnerships, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free tax return preparation to eligible people in the community by IRS certified volunteers.

MilTax , a Department of Defense program, generally offers free return preparation and electronic filing software for federal income tax returns and up to three state income tax returns for all military members, and some veterans, with no income limit.

Use Where's My Refund? to check refund status

The Where's My Refund? tool will normally show a refund status within 24 hours after e-filing a 2023 tax return, three to four days after e-filing a 2021 or 2022 return and four weeks after filing a tax return by mail. To use the tool, taxpayers need their Social Security number, filing status and exact refund amount. Taxpayers can also check Where's My Refund? by downloading our free mobile app, IRS2Go , from an iPhone or Android device. The tool updates once a day, so people don't need to check more often.

Taxpayers that owe on their tax return

IRS reminds people they can avoid paying interest and some penalties by filing their tax return and, if they have a balance due, paying the total amount due by the tax deadline of Monday, April 15. For residents of Maine or Massachusetts, the tax deadline is Wednesday, April 17, due to Patriot’s Day and Emancipation Day holidays.

Payment options for individuals to pay in full

The IRS offers various options for taxpayers who are making tax payments :

  • Direct Pay – Make a payment directly from a checking or savings account without any fees or registration.
  • Pay with debit card, credit card or digital wallet – Make a payment directly from a debit card, credit card or digital wallet. Processing fees are paid to the payment processors. The IRS doesn’t receive any fees for these payments. Authorized card processors and phone numbers are available at IRS.gov/payments . 
  • Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) – This free service gives taxpayers a safe, convenient way to pay individual and business taxes by phone or online. To enroll and for more information, taxpayers can call 800-555-4477 or visit eftps.gov .
  • Electronic funds withdrawal – Taxpayers can file and pay electronically from their bank account when using tax preparation software or a tax professional. This option is free and only available when electronically filing a tax return.
  • Check or money order  – Payments made by check or money order should be made payable to the “United States Treasury.”
  • Cash  – Make a cash payment through a retail partner and other methods. The IRS urges taxpayers choosing this option to start early because it involves a four-step process. Details, including answers to frequently asked questions, are at IRS.gov/paywithcash .

Payment options for individuals unable to pay their taxes in full

Taxpayers that are unable to pay in full by the tax deadline, should pay what they can now and apply for an online payment plan . They can receive an immediate response of payment plan acceptance or denial without calling or writing to the IRS. Online payment plan options include:

  • Short-term payment plan – The total balance owed is less than $100,000 in combined tax, penalties and interest. Additional time of up to 180 days to pay the balance in full.
  • Long-term payment plan – The total balance owed is less than $50,000 in combined tax, penalties and interest. Pay in monthly payments for up to 72 months. Payments may be set up using direct debit (automatic bank withdraw) which eliminates the need to send in a payment each month, saving postage costs and reducing the chance of default. For balances between $25,000 and $50,000, direct debit is required.

Though interest and late-payment penalties continue to accrue on any unpaid taxes after April 15, the failure to pay penalty is cut in half while an installment agreement is in effect. Unable to file by the April 15 deadline?

Individuals unable to file their tax return by the tax deadline can apply for a tax-filing extension in the following ways:

  • Individual tax filers, regardless of income, can electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension through IRS Free File by filing a Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return PDF .
  • Make an electronic payment using Direct Pay, debit card, credit card or digital wallet and indicate the payment is for an extension.
  • Mail Form 4868 by the tax deadline.

Things people should know when requesting a tax-filing extension:

  • Tax-filing extension requests are due by the tax deadline date, and it does not give an extension of time to pay the taxes.
  • Avoid some penalties by estimating and paying the tax due by the tax deadline.
  • Special rules for tax deadlines and automatic tax-filing extensions may apply for taxpayers serving in a combat zone or qualified hazardous duty areas , living outside the United States , and people living in certain disaster areas . They may not need to submit a tax-filing extension; however, people should check to see if they qualify before the tax deadline.
