Speech No.1: Speech On Earth Day Celebration

  • Speaker: Professionals, Students, Teacher
  • Audience: General or Expert Gathering

Good morning,

Ladies and gentlemen, my dear student and Present Dignitaries

I am…(Self Intro.). It is my pleasure to speak in front of you.

Today is April 22, and this day is celebrated as Earth Day all over the world. Earth Day is more than just a day; it serves as a reminder to value and protect our beautiful world. It was initially commemorated in 1970 and has since grown into a worldwide celebration by people, groups, and governments to support environmental protection, sustainability, and initiatives to deal with issues like habitat loss, pollution, and climate change.

Sometimes it can seem like the last place you want to be is on Earth. In Indian tradition, the notion that the earth is the mother is firmly ingrained. We emerge from the soil. Only a representative who was also born on the same planet is our biological mother. The soil that we carry on our bodies is our true mother. The body you are carrying right now was once an insect, snake, cow, monkey, and human being, among millions of other bodies.

I am not referring to the evolution process, but rather the soil that supports all life. Not a commodity, but soil. It is significantly more intelligent and capable than you, and it is older and wiser. It is a much more extensive process than you personally know.

And there is no denying that our planet is dealing with some serious problems. A lot of issues need to be addressed, such as the destruction of biodiversity, deforestation, pollution, and climate change.

The greatest threat we are now facing is probably change in the environment or climate. As a result of the rise in global temperatures, extreme weather events like heat waves, droughts, and floods are becoming more frequent and severe. These disasters cause significant damage to ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

Pollution is another significant issue. Our oceans, air, and soil are all negatively impacted by pollution, which also has an adverse influence on human and animal health. The use of single-use plastics and other non-biodegradable materials has a significant impact on pollution.

Earth Day acts as an indicator of how crucial it is to protect the environment. Now is the perfect time to consider how human actions affect the environment and make changes in our lifestyles to lessen our carbon footprint. The commemoration of Earth Day also contributes to raising awareness of the risks posed by climate change and the necessity of taking action to limit additional harm.

World Earth Day is a significant occasion that serves as a reminder of the value of our planet and the necessity of taking steps to safeguard it. Despite the numerous obstacles we face, there are many things we can do to change things.

Let’s pledge to take action today and every day to protect the environment for the coming generations. Let’s pledge to do something to make the world more sustainable on World Earth Day. Let’s endeavor to lessen our carbon footprint and educate ourselves and others about environmental issues. Along with planting trees and restoring wetlands and marine habitats, we must also safeguard and preserve our natural ecosystems.

We can also support Earth Day by using less electricity, conserving water from the faucet, disposing of trash properly, avoiding the use of toxic chemicals in bathroom drains, sharing our vehicles, and driving an electric vehicle.

If we all make the decision to take steps toward a greener planet, the Earth Day celebration can result in a noticeable difference. Although the path to environmental sustainability won’t be simple, we must take it in order to protect our world and the generations that follow. We must cooperate for a better future, as it is our joint duty to save and restore our planet.

Thank you

Speech No.2: Speech On World Earth Day For Students

(4 to 5 Min. Speak time)

  • Speaker: School And College Student, Teacher
  • Audience: Students, Teachers, General Publi c

Respected Principle, Teachers, and my dear students,

Today is a very special day! It’s a day that brings all of us together to celebrate and cherish the incredible home we share – our beautiful planet Earth! Welcome to the World Earth Day celebration!

On this day, we take a moment to appreciate the wonders of nature that surround us. From the lush green forests to the sparkling blue oceans, from the tall mountains to the vast deserts, our Earth is filled with breathtaking sights and amazing creatures.

You might wonder why we celebrate Earth Day. Well, it’s because we want to remind ourselves of how important it is to take care of our planet. Just like how we look after our toys, our books, and our pets, we must also take care of the Earth.

There are many simple things we can do to help our planet stay healthy and happy. One of the most important things is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. By using less plastic and paper, we can protect our oceans and forests. And when we recycle, we give new life to old things!

Let’s also remember to save energy! Turning off lights and appliances when we don’t need them helps the Earth and saves our parents’ money too! Isn’t that cool?

Another way we can show love to the Earth is by planting trees. Trees are like magical guardians of our planet. They give us fresh air to breathe and provide homes for many animals. So, let’s all become little tree planters and watch our efforts grow tall and strong!

We should also be kind to the animals and plants that live with us on Earth. Just like we care for our pets, we must show love and respect to all living creatures. Remember, we are all connected in this wonderful web of life!

Now, you might think, “I’m just a kid, how can I make a difference?” Well, let me tell you a secret – you have tremendous power! Each one of you can be an Earth superhero! By spreading the message of love and care for our planet, you can inspire others to join in the effort too.

So, on this World Earth Day, let’s make a promise together. Let’s promise to be kind to our planet every day! Let’s promise to do our best to protect it, just like we protect our family and friends.

Remember, Earth is not just a place we live; it’s our home, and we must take care of it with all our hearts. By working together, we can make a big difference and create a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.

Thank you for being a part of this special celebration. Now, let’s go out there and be the superheroes that our Earth needs!

Happy World Earth Day!

Earth Day: 5 ways we’re working to heal our planet and combat climate change

International Mother Earth Day is a chance to reflect on how humanity has been treating our planet, and let’s face it: we’ve been poor custodians. And while a steady stream of IPCC reports has painted a legitimately worrying picture of the current state of the planet, don’t lose hope – here's why: there are more innovative ideas for serious climate action than ever and around the world, people are working together on solutions to help repair the damage that’s been done to our fragile home.

But before we get to the exciting stuff, there’s no denying the gravity of the problem.

The Earth is facing a ‘triple planetary crisis’: climate disruption, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.

“This triple crisis is threatening the well-being and survival of millions of people around the world. The building blocks of happy, healthy lives – clean water, fresh air, a stable and predictable climate – are in disarray, putting the Sustainable Development Goals in jeopardy”, the UN Secretary-General warns in a video message for Earth Day 2022.

The good news is that there is still hope, António Guterres stresses, reminding us that 50 years ago, the world came together in Stockholm for the pivotal UN Conference on the Human Environment , which kickstarted a global movement.

“Since then, we have seen what is possible when we act as one . We have shrunk the ozone hole. We have expanded protections for wildlife and ecosystems. We have ended the use of leaded fuel, preventing millions of premature deaths. And just last month, we launched a landmark global effort to prevent and end plastic pollution”.

We have proven that together, we can tackle monumental challenges.

The positive developments have not stopped there, the recently recognized right to a healthy environment is gaining traction and young people are more engaged than ever in the combat to take on our planetary threats.

“We have proven that together, we can tackle monumental challenges”, Mr. Guterres says.

Of course, much more needs to be done – and more quickly – to protect our home, but to celebrate Earth Day , we want to highlight five projects being implemented around the world right now aimed at repairing the damage we have caused.

These solutions are just some of the founding initiatives of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration , a global rallying cry launched last year to heal our planet. It aims to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and ocean.

So here are 5 ways that we (humans) are working to restore our ailing Earth:

1. Converting coal mines into carbon sinks

Activists of Green Forests Work planting native trees in Appalachia, United States, where surface coal mining has devastated forests...

In Appalachia, a geographical and cultural region in the eastern United States that includes Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia and is named after the Appalachian Mountains, the NGO Green Forests Work (GFW) is restoring forests on lands impacted by coal surface mining projects.

Surface mining is a technique used when coal is less than 200 feet underground. Large machines remove the topsoil and layers of rock and expose coal seams. Miners might also dynamite the tops of mountains and remove them to access the seams.

Once the mining is completed, what was once a forest is often converted into grasslands often composed of non-native species. This means, of course, the loss of large tracts of forested areas and the displacement and even loss of species.

To reverse this incredible damage, since 2009, Green Forests Work has been restoring mined lands by planting nearly 4 million native trees across more than 6,000 acres.

“Many mined lands are among the best places to plant trees for the purposes of mitigating climate change. Because the soils of reclaimed mined lands initially have very little organic carbon, they can serve as carbon sinks for decades, if not centuries, as the forests grow and build the soils,” Michael French, GFW Director of Operations explains to UN News.

He adds that by restoring native forests to these lands, they are restoring the ecosystem services they provide to society, including clean air and water, improved wildlife habitat, climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration, as well as a sustainable economic resource base.

“We at GFW hope that everyone is able to get out and experience the wonders of the natural world and make their own contribution to improving the world around them this Earth Day and every day,” Mr. French highlights.

2. Restoring ecosystem connectivity

This 300 metre long Karda (goanna) Noongar totem has been planted by the Nowanup Ranger Team in the South west of Australia.

Twenty years ago, a satellite photograph of Australia’s south-western corner showing the vast extent of natural vegetation lost due to human activity since the European settlement inspired a group of activists to form Gondwana Link.

The image showed how two-thirds of the vegetation in the region had been cleared across thousands of kilometres, and, over much of the agricultural region, many areas had less than 5-10 per cent of their original bushland (natural undeveloped areas) left.

They realized, however, that many biodiversity hotspots remained intact in conservation areas, although disconnected, across 1000 kilometres.

Even the largest patches of natural habitats are unable to guarantee the survival or continued evolution of species if they remain isolated from each other. Many bird and animal species are being reduced to small, isolated populations that are under stress, for example.

Unless these areas are reconnected , many species could be lost, something Godwana Link is working to prevent.

“Habitats are protected, managed, restored and reconnected throughout the climate gradient that wildlife will move along in the face of climate change, from semi-arid woodlands to tall wet forests. This work is being achieved in ways that support the aspirations of the Noongar and Ngadju people, who were dispossessed in colonial times but are now regaining the right and the ability to be land managers once again,” CEO Keith Bradby explains to UN News.

Mr. Bradby describes how significant gains have been made with the work of a broad range of groups, businesses and individuals contributing a 16-million-hectare habitat area now recognised as the Great Western Woodlands.

“Over 20,000 hectares of farmland has been purchased in the critical habitat gaps, with large swathes under restoration plantings and wildlife already returning. Our state government has announced the end of logging in our native forests”, he adds.

The work of the organization has been recognized globally as an example of what large-scale ecosystem restoration looks like.

“Every day can be Earth Day. We can do it – and the more the merrier”, says Mr. Bradby.

3. Transplanting ‘survivor’ coral fragments

Restored corals in Laughing Bird Caye National Park, Belize.

The image above is from Laughing Bird Caye National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Belize. It shows a restored coral reef previously victim of a bleaching event and in danger of death.

Coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse and valuable ecosystems on Earth, harbouring 25 per cent of all marine life.

They are in danger of disappearing by the end of the century all over the world due to the rising temperature and acidity of our ocean’s consequence of climate change.

Their loss would have devastating consequences not only for marine life, but also for over a billion people globally who benefit directly or indirectly from them.

Fragments of Hope is successfully re-seeding devastated reefs by planting genetically robust, diverse and resilient corals in southern Belize.

As a diver, Lisa Carne, the organization’s founder, explains that besides massive coral bleaching events and hurricanes in the region, she saw some corals bouncing back.

“These are the stronger survivors that we are propagating and replenishing the reef with,” she tells UN News.

Since the early 2000’s, Ms. Carne and other women divers and marine biologists from the NGO have been growing healthy corals in nurseries and them transplanting them by hand in shallow water.

“Our work is important because we are striving to prevent the extinction of the Caribbean acroporids corals which are listed as critically endangered which is one step away from extinct in the wild. We think it is also important to educate and inspire people to do more to understand reefs and the threats to them such as climate change,” she explains.

Today, over 49,000 nursery-grown coral fragments have been successfully out-planted in Laughing Bird Caye National Park, turning it once again into a vibrant tourism destination with thriving corals and abundant marine life. These corals have over six years survivorship and are considered the longest documented in the Caribbean.

New nursery and out-plant sites include Moho Caye (over 11,000 corals out-planted) and South Silk Caye (over 2,000 corals out-planted).

“Our message for this Earth Day 2022 is that we as a global society need to do better. What we’ve been doing so far is not working for our planet. We often think about ecosystems and biomes on a small scale but on a larger scale, business as usual is not working, so we all need to do our part to radically change our ways to protect our planet earth,” urges Ms. Carne.

4. Restoring watersheds affected by the climate crisis in the Andes

Native forests have been largely lost in the Peruvian Andes over the last 500 years following the Spanish conquest...

Another example of large-scale restoration and conservation efforts is happening in the Andes mountains in South America where local communities across five different countries are working together to grow and plant native trees and protect their water sources.

“Native forests have been largely lost in the Andes over the last 500 years following the Spanish conquest. With the last Andean glaciers melting rapidly, water security is now becoming a major issue for local communities and even major South American cities,” Constatino Aucca Chutas, co-founder of the NGO Acción Andina tells UN News.

Mr. Aucca explains that native forests, especially the Polylepis species [shrub and trees that are endemic to the mid- and high-elevation regions of the tropical Andes] and wetlands help create and store large amounts of water around their roots, soils and moss.

“They are our best allies to adapt to climate change and will help secure water for our livelihoods in the next decades to come. But we have to bring them back”, he highlights.

And that’s exactly what Accion Andina is doing: by the end of 2022, they will have planted more than 6 million native trees across the Andes . Their goal is to protect and restore one million hectares of high Andean forests in the next 25 years.

“We have found a unique way to do so: we are reviving the ancient Inca traditions of “ Ayni and Minka – which stands for collaboration and community services in our local Quechua culture. With our growing network of local NGO partners, we help communities protect remaining forests; we invest in local nurseries to grow new native forests; we organize community planting festivals – our renowned Queuña Raymi – to plant up to 100,000 trees in a single day; and we are supporting communities to make an additional living from these new restoration opportunities,” Mr. Aucca explains.

He says that while world leaders are still just talking about possible solutions to climate change, thousands of people are already acting on the ground.

“Mobilizing thousands of people to restore forests and achieve immediate climate action is possible… Our Mother Earth is tired of seeing all this hypocrisy, comfort and ego of the leaders who can decide and put on the ground the solutions to have a healthy planet. Local communities and the planet claim for more action, is time to take action for the sake of all of us,” Mr. Aucca urges in his message for Earth Day.

5. Restoring carbon absorbing seagrass

Manatees, also know as sea cows, are starving to death due to the loss of seagrass.

Seagrass provides food and shelter for many marine organisms. They are multifunctional ecosystems and are often referred as nursery habitats because they usually harbour young fish, smaller species of fish and invertebrates.

Because they are plants, seagrasses photosynthesise in the same way terrestrial plants do, using sunlight to synthetise nutrients from carbon dioxide and water and releasing oxygen.

This means that they are an essential tool in combating climate change, on top of their biological functions.

In the last 40 years, the world has lost one third of seagrass meadows due to sustain pressure from coastal development, water quality decline and of course, climate change.

Project Seagrass in the United Kingdom has been working for a decade to reverse that trend.

With the help of over 3000 volunteers, they have been able to plant over a million seagrass seeds and create awareness of the importance of these plants.

“With two full hectares of seagrass successfully restored, our organization has proved that large-scale seagrass restoration in the UK is possible. We are using a mix of cutting-edge technologies to assess sites and plan field trials”, the organization explains.

A lake inside an Amazon rainforest within the city of Manaus, Brazil.

That’s not all folks

These are just five examples of the more than 50 projects registered with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. There are thousands of people and organizations already on the ground and making a difference to protect our Earth.

When the UN General Assembly meets this September, we will find out the first 10 World Restoration Flagships , the most promising examples of large-scale and long-term ecosystem restoration.

Bringing back ecosystems from the brink of degradation and loss is possible – and people around the world are already making it happen.

“Because we have only one Mother Earth. We must do everything we can to protect her”, the UN chief reminds us.

Speech on Earth Day

‘Good morning, respected teachers and fellow students. Today, I stand before you to present my ‘Speech on Earth Day.’ Earth Day is a global event celebrated on 22 April every year. Earth Day is crucial for all of us, as it reminds us of the importance of saving Earth’s limited resources for future generations. In addition, Earth Day celebrates the efforts and accomplishments of environmentalists to protect the environment.

‘Leo Tolstoy once said, ‘One of the first conditions of happiness is the link between man and nature shall not be broken.’ Globally, several environmental movements have been launched to save earth from the harmful human activities. In India, too environmental movements like the ‘Chipko Movement, ‘Narmada Bachao Andolan,’ ‘Jungle Bachao Movement’, etc. have highlighted the importance of Earth’s natural resources.’

‘In 2023, the Earth Day theme was ‘Invest in Our Planet’ . This theme was meant to encourage businesses to shift their focus towards sustainable practices. For Earth Day 2024, EARTHDAY.ORG has launched a movement called ‘Planet vs Plastics’ . The objective of this movement is to eliminate plastic use for the sake of our planet’s health. The initial target is to reduce plastic usage by 60% in all sectors by 2040. ‘

‘With the new approach to saving the earth, EARTHDAY.ORG plans to unite governments, organisations, intellectuals, students, and NGOs to call for an end to plastics for the sake of the planet and humanity. Every year, plastic production increases to more than 380 million tons. The demand to eliminate plastic from our environment will help build a plastic-free society for future generations.’

‘Kathleen Rogers, the President of the EARTHDAY.ORG, quoted, ‘The Planet vs. Plastics campaign is a call to arms, a demand that we act now to end the scourge of plastics and safeguard the health of every living being upon our planet.’

‘Our environment’s safety is our responsibility. Plastic was once an amazing product when it was produced in limited quantity. Now this useful product has become something else. It is harming our health, deteriorating our resources, polluting our water, and damaging the environment.’

‘So on this Earth Day, let’s all unite as one and fight against plastic. Only if we act now, we can save our planet from this harmful product. Thank you.’

Table of Contents

Earth Day Speech Tips

Captivating opening.

To capture your audience’s attention from the start, begin with a captivating opening that highlights the urgency and relevance of the environmental issues we face. Consider starting with a startling fact, a powerful quote, or a personal anecdote that connects the audience emotionally to the topic. The goal is to engage their attention and create a sense of shared responsibility.

Establishing Credibility and Connection

To establish credibility as a speaker, share your personal experiences, involvement in environmental causes, or relevant expertise. This establishes a connection with your audience and demonstrates that you are passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. By showing your authenticity, you inspire trust and make your message more compelling.

Developing a Clear Message

Craft a clear and concise message that conveys the essence of Earth Day. Your speech should emphasize the importance of environmental stewardship, sustainable practices, and the role of individuals in creating positive change. For example, “On this Earth Day, let us recognize that the fate of our planet lies in our hands. It is our responsibility to protect and preserve the Earth for future generations through conscious actions and collective efforts.”

Structuring Your Speech

To ensure coherence and impact, structure your speech into three sections: introduction, body, and conclusion.

Introduction: Revisit your attention-grabbing opening and provide a brief overview of what you will discuss. Set the tone for the speech and generate enthusiasm among your audience.

Body: Divide the body into three key themes or ideas that support your central message. Focus on areas such as environmental challenges, individual actions, and the power of collective efforts. Present compelling evidence, facts, and real-life examples that illustrate the urgency of the situation and inspire action. Highlight the interconnectedness of environmental issues with other aspects of life, such as health, economy, and social justice. Use persuasive language and rhetorical devices to engage your audience emotionally and intellectually.

Conclusion: Recapitulate your main points and reinforce the significance of Earth Day. Inspire your audience by emphasizing the positive impact individuals can make through simple changes in their daily lives. Urge them to take action, such as reducing their carbon footprint, supporting sustainable initiatives, and advocating for environmental policies. End with a call to action that motivates your listeners to be environmental stewards beyond Earth Day.

Engaging Delivery

A well-written speech needs to be delivered effectively. Pay attention to your tone, pace, and body language. Maintain eye contact with your audience and use appropriate gestures to enhance your message. Incorporate pauses to allow your words to sink in and convey the gravity of the situation. Practice your speech repeatedly to build confidence and ensure a smooth delivery that captivates your listeners.

As we stand on the precipice of environmental challenges, it is crucial that we come together to reflect on our role as stewards of the Earth. This day serves as a reminder of the profound connection we share with the natural world and the responsibility we bear to protect it.

Look around you—breathe in the fresh air, feel the warmth of the sun, and listen to the gentle rustle of leaves. Our planet provides us with an abundance of resources, beauty, and sustenance. It is a priceless gift, one that we must cherish and safeguard for future generations.

However, the reality is that our Earth is facing unprecedented threats. Climate change is altering ecosystems, leading to extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and the loss of precious biodiversity. Pollution is poisoning our air, water, and soil, endangering not only our environment but also our health. Deforestation, overconsumption, and the depletion of natural resources further exacerbate the challenges we face.

But let me assure you, it is not too late. We have the power to make a difference, to reverse the damage, and to create a sustainable future. Each and every one of us has a role to play in this crucial mission.

We must start by recognizing the impact of our daily actions. It is not enough to simply talk about saving the planet; we must translate our words into meaningful deeds. Let us pledge to reduce our carbon footprint by conserving energy, embracing renewable sources, and adopting eco-friendly practices. Small changes in our lifestyles, such as recycling, reducing waste, and using public transportation, can have a profound impact when multiplied by millions.

Education is key. We must educate ourselves and others about the importance of environmental conservation. Knowledge empowers us to make informed choices and inspires us to take action. By teaching our children about the wonders of nature, we instill in them a deep respect and love for the Earth. Together, we can build a generation of environmental advocates who will carry the torch of conservation into the future.

We must also hold governments and corporations accountable for their actions. Advocate for sustainable policies, support initiatives that promote renewable energy, and demand responsible practices from industries. Let your voice be heard—write letters, sign petitions, and engage in peaceful activism. Together, we can drive systemic change and create a world where economic progress and environmental protection go hand in hand.

However, our efforts should not be limited to a single day. Earth Day should serve as a catalyst for long-term commitment and action. Let us embrace a sustainable mindset and integrate it into our daily lives. Let us pass on a legacy of environmental stewardship to future generations.

In closing, I urge you to see Earth Day as more than just a celebration. It is a call to action, a reminder of the urgent need to protect our planet. Let us stand united in our resolve, for the Earth knows no boundaries or borders. Together, we can create a future where the air is pure, the waters run clear, and the Earth thrives in all its natural glory.

Thank you, and Happy Earth Day!

speech on world earth day

Vice President Kamala Harris: ( 00:00 ) Your excellencies, distinguished leaders, and esteemed colleagues from around the world, welcome to this historic Leaders Summit on Climate. I want to thank you for being here, and for your leadership. I have spoken with a number of you about the climate crisis. We have talked about the scarcity of water, we have talked about the need to build resilience, and we have talked about the importance of investing in clean technologies. Together, of course, we come from very different places, but we share this common concern and this common threat. Here in the United States, the storms hitting our Gulf Coast are worse every year. The wildfires in my home state of California have grown in intensity. And of course, no nation or region is immune. Whether it is Western Europe, where heatwaves have made it very difficult to stay indoors while risking a health risk, or the Pacific Islands, where rising sea levels threaten to encroach on the land and homes of lifelong residents, or in Central America, where last year, two major hurricanes devastated entire communities.

Vice President Kamala Harris: ( 01:22 ) As a global community, it is imperative that we act quickly and together to confront this crisis, and this will require innovation and collaboration around the world. It will require the use of renewable energy and new technologies, and it will give each of our nations the opportunity to build healthier communities and stronger economies. Here, we believe tackling climate change, improving communities, and creating jobs can occur simultaneously, and we must recognize the importance of course, of justice, in the work that we do. The communities hardest hit by climate change are the same communities harmed by wealth and gender inequality, toxic air pollution, and so much more. This truth holds around the world. So I urge all of us to focus on these communities, including Indigenous communities, and consider their insight and experience in our efforts moving forward. They are critical leaders in this fight.

Vice President Kamala Harris: ( 02:36 ) Friends, the health of our communities, the well-being of our workers, and the strength of our economies depend on what we do now, and I can think of no one more committed to achieving our collective goals, than President Joe Biden. The president was one of the first members in the United States Congress to take the issue of climate change, and on our first day in office, he led the fact that we would rejoin the Paris Agreement. And the president is just getting started, as we work to tackle this crisis, while creating clean energy jobs across our nation. It is now my great honor to introduce the President of the United States, Joe Biden.

President Joe Biden: ( 03:24 ) Thank you, Madam Vice-President. Good morning to all our colleagues around the world, the world leaders for taking part in this summit, I thank you. Your leadership on this issue is a statement to the people of your nation and to the people of every nation, especially our young people that we’re ready to meet this moment, and meeting this moment is about more than preserving our planet, it’s also about providing a better future for all of us. That’s why when people talk about climate, I think jobs. Within our climate response lies an extraordinary engine of job creation and economic opportunity, ready to be fired up. That’s why I’ve proposed a huge investment in American infrastructure and American innovation to tap the economic opportunity that climate change presents to our workers and our communities, especially those too often that I’ve left out and left behind.

President Joe Biden: ( 04:23 ) I’d like to build, I want to build a critical infrastructure to produce and deploy clean technology, both those we can harness today, and those that we’ll invent tomorrow. I talked to the experts, and I see the potential for a more prosperous and equitable future. The signs are unmistakable, the science is undeniable, and the cost of inaction keeps mounting. The United States is in waiting. We are resolving to take action, not only our federal government, but our cities and our states all across our country, small businesses, large businesses, large corporations, American workers in every field. I see an opportunity to create millions of good paying middle-class union jobs. I see lineworkers laying thousands of miles of transmission lines for a clean, modern, resilient grid. I see workers capping hundreds of thousands of abandoned oil and gas wells that need to be cleaned up, and abandoned coal mines that need to be reclaimed, putting a stop to the methane leaks, and protecting the health of our communities.

President Joe Biden: ( 05:35 ) I see auto workers building the next generation of electric vehicles, and electricians installing nationwide for 500,000 charging stations along our highways. I see the engineers and the construction workers building new carbon capture and green hydrogen plants to forge cleaner steel and cement, and produce clean power. I see farmers deploying cutting edge tools to make soil of our heartland, the next frontier in carbon innovation. By maintaining those investments and putting these people to work, the United States sets out on the road to cut greenhouse gases in half, in half by the end of this decade. That’s where we’re headed as a nation, and that’s what we can do, if we take action to build an economy that’s not only more prosperous, but healthier, fairer, and cleaner for the entire planet.

President Joe Biden: ( 06:36 ) These steps will set on America on a path of net zero emissions economy by no later than 2050. But the truth is, America represents less than 15% of the world’s emissions. No nation can solve this crisis on our own, as I know you all fully understand. All of us, all of us, and particularly those of us who represent the world’s largest economies. We have to step up. Those that do take action and make bold investments in their people, and clean energy future, will win the good jobs of tomorrow and make their economies more resilient and more competitive.

President Joe Biden: ( 07:16 ) So let’s run that race. Win more, win more sustainable future than we have now. Overcome the existential crisis of our times. We know just how critically important that is, because scientists tell us that this is the decisive decade. This is the decade we must make decisions that will avoid the worst consequences of the climate crisis. We must try to keep the Earth’s temperature to an increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius. The world beyond 1.5 degrees means more frequent and intense fires, floods, droughts, heatwaves, and hurricanes, tearing through communities, ripping away lives and livelihoods, increasingly dire impacts to our public health. It’s undeniable, [inaudible 00:08:08], the idea of accelerating and punishing the reality that will come, if we don’t move. We can’t resign ourselves to that future. We have to take action, all of us, and this summit is our first step on the road we’ll travel together, God willing all of us, to, and through Glasgow this November in the UN Climate Change Conference.

President Joe Biden: ( 08:32 ) To set our world on a path to a secure, prosperous, and sustainable future, the health of communities throughout the world depends on it. The well-being of our workers depends on it. The strength of our economies depends on it. The countries that take decisive action now to create the industries of the future, will be the ones that reap the economic benefits of the clean energy boom that’s coming. We’re here at this summit to discuss how each of us, each country, can set higher climate ambitions that will in turn, create good paying jobs, advance innovative technologies, and help vulnerable countries adapt to climate impacts. We have to move. We have to move quickly to meet these challenges. The steps our countries take between now and Glasgow will set the world up for success to protect livelihoods around the world, and keep global warming at a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius. We must get on the path now in order to do that.

President Joe Biden: ( 09:40 ) If we do, we’ll breathe easier, literally and figuratively. We’ll create good jobs here at home for millions of Americans, and lay a strong foundation for growth for the future, and that can be your goal as well. This is a moral imperative, an economic imperative, a moment of peril, but also a moment of extraordinary possibilities. Time is short, but I believe we can do this, and I believe that we will do this. Thank you for being part of the summit. Thank you for the communities and the commitments you have made, and the communities you’re from. God bless you all, and I look forward to progress that we can make together today and beyond. We really have no choice. We have to get this done.

  • National Geographic Education: Introduction to Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual celebration that honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earths natural resources for future generations . Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 in the United States and on either April 22 or the day the spring equinox occurs throughout the rest of the world. Environmental activism during the 1960s inspired Wisconsin Sen. Gaylord Nelson to create a national celebration uniting the environmental movement. With the help of Denis Hayes, a graduate student at Harvard University, Nelson organized the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, educating participants in the importance of environmental conservation . Attended by 20 million people across the United States, the event strengthened support for legislation such as the Clean Air Act (updated in 1970) and the Endangered Species Act (1973). In 1990, Hayes organized a global Earth Day, with more than 200 million participants in more than 140 countries. Earth Day now brings together citizens and activists from around the world to raise awareness and take action regarding such environmental concerns as global warming and renewable energy . Today, the Earth Day Network (EDN) , which brings together more than 20,000 partners and organizations in 190 countries, supports the Earth Day mission year-round. This mission is founded on the premise that all people, regardless of race , gender , income , or geography , have a moral right to a healthy, sustainable environment. The Earth Day Network pursues this mission through education, public policy , and activism campaigns. These campaigns bring together more than one billion participants every year, making it one of the largest public, secular events in the world. The Earth Day Network pursues a set of core goals:

  • Broaden the meaning of environment to include issues such as climate change , green schools and environmental curricula, green jobs , and renewable energy ;
  • Diversify the movement by providing civic engagement opportunities at the local, state, national and global levels around the world. Recognizing that climate change impacts our most vulnerable citizens first and most severely, EDN often works with low-income communities to bring their voices and issues into the movement.
  • Mobilize communities by working with partner organizations to provide opportunities for all citizens to become active in the environmental movement.

Earth Days Core Issues This set of goals underlines Earth Day events and actions around the world, which can be organized into ten core issues. Advocacy : Supporters encourage individuals and organizations to meet with elected officials to discuss environmental issues. The online program "Million Acts of Green," for instance, encourages visitors to adopt lifestyle changes such as composting, reducing your carbon footprint, or recycling e-waste.

Climate Change : Supporters raise awareness about climate change , human contribution to those changes, and opportunities to slow the phenomenon . Many Earth Day supporters, for instance, encourage citizens to support the landmark Paris Climate agreement, set to be signed on Earth Day 2016.

Conservation & Biology : Supporters work to conserve the world's biodiversity . On Earth Day 2010, for instance, participants in Sri Lanka planted more than 100 medicinal plants throughout the tropical rain forest at Yagirala Forest Reserve. These plants can be used by local populations and will create habitats for different organisms, enhancing the biodiversity of the island nation. Education : Earth Day education programs provide educators, students, and the general public with resources and solutions to create a healthier, more sustainable planet. On Earth Day 2010, for instance, teachers and students in the Compostela Valley region of the Philippines participated in a day-long conference. At the conference, they learned about tree planting and care, participated in nature hikes, and presented their environmental action projects to the community. Energy : Advocates support projects that develop renewable energy sources and technologies as means of transitioning off of nonrenewable sources, such as coal and oil . Citizens of Qatar, for example, are invited to switch off their power for one hour on Earth Day in a symbolic stance against human contributions to global warming. Food & Agriculture : Supporters raise awareness about some farming practices, such as the use of chemical pesticides , which contribute to environmental degradation . Supporters also advocate for a greater support of organic , local, and sustainable agricultural techniques. Member organizations of this issue group include Articultores , based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which raises awareness about urban gardening and brings citizens and youth together to plant in abandoned sites in cities. Green Economy : Supporters advocate for the creation of green industries and jobs that are connected to renewable energy sources. For example, the Students in Free Enterprise group in Saskatchewan, Canada, sponsors a prize for student projects that make best use of recycled materials. Green Schools : The Earth Day Network sponsors the National GREEN Schools Campaign. The GREEN Schools Campaign includes a focus on healthy school lunches, environmental classroom activities, outreach to local and national leaders, and an emphasis on sustainable building techniques. Recycling & Waste Reduction : Supporters work to reduce the amount of waste that people produce, and increase the amount that we recycle and reuse. The Beach Bunch group of Brunei, for example, organizes beach-cleaning campaigns. Sustainable Development : Supporters promote environmental practices that respect biodiversity and the natural world. Costa Rica, for instance, has implemented the Viaje Limpio program, in which individuals and companies pay a fee for the greenhouse gases they produce through travel. This money goes to protect the rainforest, water resources, and biodiversity of Costa Rica. Viaje Limpio helps the Costa Rican economy, because biodiversity and the rain forest are important natural assets that bring thousands of tourists to the country every year. In only 40 years, Earth Day has evolved from a single day celebrating the environmental movement in the United States to a global network that empowers more than a billion people to better understand, protect, and improve the environment.

Why April 22? Earth Day falls on April 22. The day was chosen by the original event's organizer, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson (for the state of Wisconsin), for simple reasons. Earth Day was an event focused on college students, and April 22 did not interfere with Spring Break, final exams, major religious holidays such as Easter, and was late enough in spring to anticipate decent weather for outdoor activities.

Margaret Mead's Holy Day "Earth Day is the first holy day which transcends all national borders, yet preserves all geographical integrities, spans mountains and oceans and time belts, and yet brings people all over the world into one resonating accord, is devoted to the preservation of the harmony in nature and yet draws upon the triumphs of technology, the measurement of time, and instantaneous communication through space." <br> Margaret Mead, cultural anthropologist

Speech On World Earth Day - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

  • Speech On World Earth Day

Only the planet Earth is considered suitable for supporting human life and other life forms. We wouldn't be here if there weren't Earth, and we wouldn't have the ability to travel to other planets. We would therefore be in danger of dying if something happened to the world.

Annually, on April 22, Earth Day commemorates the victories of the environmental movement and promotes the importance of preserving the planet's natural resources for future generations.

The planet on which we reside is Earth. The fifth largest of the eight planets that orbit the sun, it is the third planet. Only on this planet are humans and other creatures able to coexist.

  • 10 Lines Speech On World Earth Day

The planet on which we reside is Earth. The fifth-largest of the eight planets that orbit the sun is the third planet. Only on this planet are humans and other creatures able to coexist.

The main goals of Earth Day are to promote environmental awareness, voice opposition to climate change and global warming, and promote volunteerism for the benefit of the environment..

The only planet where life is supported is Earth. It is unique and the only location we have. It will put our survival at risk if we can't protect it

The celebration of this day, which was once solely well-known in the United States, has subsequently spread. It is commonly observed in over 193 countries worldwide. The event includes environmental protection activities.

Short Speech On World Earth Day (200 Words)

Long speech on world earth day (500 words).

Speech On World Earth Day - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

By addressing issues like deforestation and global warming, the day emphasises the value of the planet earth and encourages people to reevaluate their behaviour.

The planet's resources are sufficient to feed everyone, but reckless resource extraction has ruined the land, the water, and the climate while significantly reducing biodiversity.

An announcement about global warming is made on Earth Day. The temperature increase has caused extreme climate shifts and global disasters.

If we do not act quickly to halt the increasing pollution on our planet, it will soon be impossible to survive on Earth.

People clean their homes on this day in the neighbourhood and by the roadside. On this day, a lot of individuals are planting plants.

On April 22, the world celebrates World Earth Day to promote sustainability and raise public awareness of the problem. More than 193 nations have observed this day since 1970 to spread awareness of the need to protect the environment. Every year on April 22, the world commemorates World Earth Day to increase public awareness of the dangerous impacts of global warming on our daily lives, openly discuss these effects, and impart knowledge on ways to prevent further damage from occurring and reverse it.

Environmental change is causing several problems, including uncontrolled deforestation, ozone layer depletion, and rising ocean levels.

Initiatives

To make this day successful, everyone can help in their unique way. On this day, some volunteers visit a local piece of land to plant trees to make the planet greener, while others opt to clean adjacent rivers or paths. We should all work together to celebrate World Earth Day on April 22 in any manner we can. People organise long-distance races, attend campaign rallies, and local governments hold a variety of Earth Day festivities. Even a small action, like turning off the lights for an hour at home, has a significant influence. We must fix the harm we have done to our planet, which is also our home.

An event known as Earth Day promotes environmental preservation every year on April 22. Earth Day was initially observed on April 22, 1970, and as of 2018, 1 billion people across more than 193 countries take part in a variety of worldwide events hosted by EarthDay.org. In 2022, the topic is "Invest In Our Planet."

History Of Earth Day

Sen. Gaylord Nelson of the United States created Earth Day as a natural protest that was first observed on April 22, 1970. The Secretary-General of the United Nations at the time, U Thant, recalled it. While the first Earth Day primarily focused on the United States, it was organised by Denis Hayes, a passionate supporter of solar energy. Nelson initially explained to the public the extent of environmental harm caused by industrial expansion.

Nelson sparked multiple large-scale movements, protested, and mobilised the American public to do this. Due to this movement, the government was forced to pay attention to these protesters' demands. And by observing the numerous environmentally friendly decisions that the administration has made. And the UN was kept informed of this topic so that it might be discussed internationally. In the UN, this issue received backing from more than 192 nations.

Additionally, everyone promoted environmental protection in their home nations. Mother Earth's protection needs to be our priority. The resources we obtain from Earth will run out after a while unless we take steps to protect them. To ensure that our future generations may also utilise these resources, we must act now while we still have the opportunity.

What Can We Do

The steps we can take to keep the environment safe are:

Utilising less land for cultivation is the first method of resource preservation. Every year, substantial forest lands are destroyed to make way for agriculture. Crop rotation can be used to grow crops that use less space, which we should attempt to accomplish.

We should concentrate on renewable energy resources like solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, etc., rather than non-renewable energy.

More trees should be planted, and humans and the environment should coexist harmoniously.

Even while holidays like Earth Day are observed annually, it's vital to realise that you may take steps to protect the planet's resources and maintain the environment at any time. The only way to guarantee that our future generations will be able to live well on the earth is to do this.

World Earth Day promotes public awareness of environmental issues and what may be done to address them. It greatly helps in lowering pollution and averting the depletion of nonrenewable resources. It teaches individuals from all areas of life various actions, such as avoiding plastic, putting more trees in the ground, recycling, conserving water, and safeguarding our wildlife and other animals.

Now since time is of the essence, we must become aware of what we are doing. We must immediately take action to repair the damage done to our planet before it is too late.

When Mother Earth sends us a message

Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. Nature is suffering. Oceans filling with plastic and turning more acidic. Extreme heat , wildfires and floods, have affected millions of people. Even these days, we are still trying to get back on track from COVID-19 , a worldwide health pandemic linked to the health of our ecosystem.

Climate change , man-made changes to nature as well as crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensified agriculture and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade, can accelerate the speed of destruction of the planet.

This is the second Mother Earth Day celebrated within the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration . Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet - and its people. Restoring our damaged ecosystems will help to end poverty, combat climate change and prevent mass extinction. But we will only succeed if everyone plays a part.

For this International Mother Earth Day, let's remimd ourselves - more than ever - that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Let’s promote harmony with nature and the Earth. Join the global movement to restore our world!

Let’s act now

There are multiple, feasible and effective options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to human-caused climate change, and they are available now, according to the last UN Climate Change report backed by science.

Why do we mark International Days?

International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tool. We also mark other UN observances .

Earth Day 2024

By: History.com Editors

Updated: January 31, 2024 | Original: October 27, 2009

A sign reading "Save the Earth / Its Fate Is In Our Hands" at an Earth Day march in New York City.

Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues, and Earth Day 2024 will occur on Monday, April 22. The holiday is now a global celebration that’s sometimes extended into Earth Week, a full seven days of events focused on green living and confronting the climate crisis. The brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson and inspired by the protests of the 1960s, Earth Day began as a “national teach-in on the environment” and was held on April 22 to maximize the number of students that could be reached on university campuses. By raising public awareness of pollution, Nelson hoped to bring environmental causes into the national spotlight.

Earth Day History

By the early 1960s, Americans were becoming aware of the effects of pollution on the environment. Rachel Carson’s 1962 bestseller Silent Spring raised the specter of the dangerous effects of pesticides on the American countryside. Later in the decade, a 1969 fire on Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River shed light on the problem of chemical waste disposal. Until that time, protecting the planet’s natural resources was not part of the national political agenda, and the number of activists devoted to large-scale issues such as industrial pollution was minimal. Factories pumped pollutants into the air, lakes and rivers with few legal consequences. Big, gas-guzzling cars were considered a sign of prosperity. Only a small portion of the American population was familiar with–let alone practiced–recycling.

Did you know? A highlight of the United Nations' Earth Day celebration in New York City is the ringing of the Peace Bell, a gift from Japan, at the exact moment of the vernal equinox.

Who Started Earth Day?

Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1962, Senator Gaylord Nelson, a Democrat from Wisconsin, was determined to convince the federal government that the planet was at risk. In 1969, Nelson, considered one of the leaders of the modern environmental movement, developed the idea for Earth Day after being inspired by the anti- Vietnam War “teach-ins” that were taking place on college campuses around the United States. According to Nelson, he envisioned a large-scale, grassroots environmental demonstration “to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda.”

Nelson announced the Earth Day concept at a conference in Seattle in the fall of 1969 and invited the entire nation to get involved. He later recalled:

“The wire services carried the story from coast to coast. The response was electric. It took off like gangbusters. Telegrams, letters and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country. The American people finally had a forum to express its concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes and air—and they did so with spectacular exuberance.”

Denis Hayes, a young activist who had served as student president at Stanford University, was selected as Earth Day’s national coordinator, and he worked with an army of student volunteers and several staff members from Nelson’s Senate office to organize the project. According to Nelson, “Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.”

Earth Day, 1970

On the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, rallies were held in Philadelphia, Chicago , Los Angeles and most other American cities, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. In New York City , Mayor John Lindsay closed off a portion of Fifth Avenue to traffic for several hours and spoke at a rally in Union Square with actors Paul Newman and Ali McGraw. In Washington, D.C. , thousands of people listened to speeches and performances by singer Pete Seeger and others, and Congress went into recess so its members could speak to their constituents at Earth Day events.

The first Earth Day was effective at raising awareness about environmental issues and transforming public attitudes. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “Public opinion polls indicate that a permanent change in national priorities followed Earth Day 1970. When polled in May 1971, 25 percent of the U.S. public declared protecting the environment to be an important goal, a 2,500 percent increase over 1969.” Earth Day kicked off the “Environmental decade with a bang,” as Senator Nelson later put it. During the 1970s, a number of important pieces of environmental legislation were passed, among them the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Toxic Substances Control Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Another key development was the establishment in December 1970 of the Environmental Protection Agency, which was tasked with protecting human health and safeguarding the natural environment—air, water and land.

What Do You Do For Earth Day?

Since 1970, Earth Day celebrations have grown. In 1990, Earth Day went global, with 200 million people in over 140 nations participating, according to the Earth Day Network (EDN), a nonprofit organization that coordinates Earth Day activities. In 2000, Earth Day focused on clean energy and involved hundreds of millions of people in 184 countries and 5,000 environmental groups, according to EDN. Activities ranged from a traveling, talking drum chain in Gabon, Africa, to a gathering of hundreds of thousands of people at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Today, the Earth Day Network collaborates with more than 17,000 partners and organizations in 174 countries. According to EDN, more than 1 billion people are involved in Earth Day activities, making it “the largest secular civic event in the world.”

Long Speech on World Earth Day in English

Dear distinguished guests, fellow environmentalists, and earth-loving individuals,

Today, we celebrate World Earth Day, a day dedicated to promoting awareness and action for the protection of our planet. On this day, we come together to reflect on the challenges facing our environment and to take steps toward creating a more sustainable future.

There is no denying that our earth is dealing with some serious problems. We need to address a number of concerns, including biodiversity loss, deforestation, pollution, and climate change.

The greatest threat we are now facing is probably climate change. Heatwaves, droughts, and floods, for example, are becoming more common and severe due to the increase in global temperatures. Ecosystems and the communities that rely on them are severely harmed by these catastrophes.

Pollution is another significant issue. Pollution has an adverse effect on the health of both people and wildlife and affects our oceans, air, and soil. Pollution is greatly influenced by the usage of single-use plastics and other non-biodegradable materials.

As we reflect on the challenges facing our planet, we must also recognize that we have the power to make a positive difference. Each of us can take action toward creating a more sustainable future, whether it’s reducing our use of plastic, conserving water, or switching to renewable energy sources. We must also hold governments and corporations accountable for their actions towards environmental protection.

On World Earth Day, let us commit ourselves to taking action toward creating a more sustainable world. Let us educate ourselves and others on environmental issues and work towards reducing our carbon footprint. We must also protect and restore our natural ecosystems, from planting trees to restoring wetlands and marine habitats.

The road to environmental sustainability will not be easy, but it is a journey we must embark on for the sake of our planet and future generations. It is our collective responsibility to protect and restore our Earth, and we must work together toward a better future.

In conclusion, I urge everyone to take action toward creating a more sustainable future. Let us work towards reducing our impact on the environment and restoring our natural ecosystems. Let us come together to create a better world for ourselves and future generations.

Speech on tree conservation on World Earth Day

Dear fellow environmentalists,

On this World Earth Day, I would like to draw your attention to the importance of tree conservation for the health of our planet. Trees are essential for the well-being of our environment as they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which is crucial for life on Earth. However, deforestation and habitat destruction have led to the loss of millions of trees every year, and this has had a significant impact on our planet.

Tree conservation is a critical aspect of environmental protection, and it requires the participation of everyone. We must all recognize the importance of trees in our lives and take action to protect and plant more trees. By doing so, we can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and mitigate the effects of climate change.

One of the ways we can conserve trees is by reducing our consumption of paper products. We can also support organizations that work towards reforestation and forest protection, as well as plant trees in our own communities. Governments and corporations also have a role to play by implementing policies that protect forests and encourage reforestation.

On this World Earth Day, let us commit ourselves to tree conservation and take action toward creating a more sustainable future. Let us plant trees, protect our natural forests, and reduce our carbon footprint. Together, we can make a positive difference and create a healthier planet for ourselves and future generations.

Remember, trees are not just a source of oxygen, but also a source of life. So, let us work together to protect and preserve them.

Since 1970, A Legacy of Environmental Action

The first Earth Day in 1970 mobilized millions of Americans from all walks of life, giving birth to a broad new movement to protect the planet. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans — 10% of the U.S. population at the time — took to streets, college campuses and hundreds of cities to protest environmental ignorance and demand a new way forward. The first Earth Day is credited with launching the modern environmental movement . Earth Day is now recognized as the planet’s largest civic event each year .

LANDMARK ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS

Earth Day 1970 led to the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States, including the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) . Many countries soon adopted similar laws, and in 2016, the United Nations chose Earth Day as the day to sign the Paris Climate Agreement into force.

EDUCATION & ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY

Climate Literacy Campaign :  Over 3 billion students lack environmental education, stranding generations without educating them on the most critical issues facing the planet.  In 2020, EDO launched the Climate Literacy campaign, urging governments attending the crucial United Nations climate summit in 2021 to make climate literacy a core feature of school curriculum across the globe . In addition to EARTHDAY.ORG, early backers range from the world’s largest trade and teachers’ unions to environmental organizations, NGOs, and elected officials from around the globe.  To date, 400 organizations representing 100 countries and over 300 million people have signed on in anticipation of stepped-up action and ambition at COP26.

National Civic Education Program: EDO launched the National Civic Education Project (NCEP) to promote the development of civic engagement skills among youth while solving local environmental issues . With the help of teachers and community organizations, students take on tough but solvable yearlong local environmental issues with demonstrable outcomes. More than 50 NCEP projects have been completed and in every case the students have logged impressive victories.

Educators Network: Over 95% of primary and secondary schools in the US and millions of schools globally observe Earth Day each year.  Established in 2004, EDO’s Educators Network reaches educators in 149 countries , providing students with the knowledge and skills to build environmental and climate literacy. In 2020, we launched our inaugural class of Earth Day Schools , featuring a global network of schools hosting environmental and civic education programs – it has grown exponentially since its creation.

Green Schools:  EARTHDAY.ORG (EDO) is a recognized leader in Green Schools and environmental education. For more than 25 years, EDO has provided well researched, peer reviewed environmental education curricula . Our efforts have reached hundreds of thousands of schools across the U.S. and in key countries abroad.

Green Ribbon Schools : EARTHDAY.ORG was a founding partner in the creation of the Green Strides Program and the Green Ribbon Schools award alongside the US Green Building Council and the Department of Education. Launched in 2011, the Green Ribbon Schools Program is the first federal program that recognizes public and private schools that reduce environmental impact and costs, improve the health of students and staff, and provide interdisciplinary environmental education.

Green School Funding: EARTHDAY.ORG helped pass legislation providing roughly $7 billion in grants to green low-income schools across the country — the first federal grant program for greening schools.

Recent campaigns have included major school bond initiatives; climate/air quality related anti- idling campaign; and energy efficiency projects. In Cincinnati, for example, students from three low-income schools worked with green architects and community groups for more than a year to turn a business-as-usual bond initiative into a green bond initiative. Cincinnati not only accepted their recommendations but also expanded upon them, agreeing to “green” almost $5 billion in school construction , now leading the U.S. in building green schools. In Los Angeles students forced the LA school district to buy new HVAC units for all LA schools after proving that LA schools failed EPA and state indoor air quality standards.

In 2012, EDO was a key supporter of passage of Proposition 39, a voter initiative generating roughly $1 billion dollars over five years to be invested in energy efficiency upgrades in public K-12 schools and community colleges. In 2013, the California legislature determined that schools with most students receiving free or reduced priced school lunches would receive larger energy efficiency grants. Under these programs, EDO worked to accomplish innovative pilot projects in low-income schools in the San Francisco and LA areas while using CRA (Community Re-Investment Act) funds to expand improvements, provide climate curricula to schools and engage local civic leaders and community members, ensuring that the projects last and expand over the long-term.

MobilizeU : Launched in 2012, MobilizeU empowers college organizations and students to make a difference on their campuses while also encouraging universities and colleges to set an example for the rest of the higher education community to follow. Over 500 colleges and universities in 51 countries and every US state have participated.

The Washington DC event became the flagship for rallies, marches, protests and teach-ins in more than 600 cities all across the world — an unprecedented global statement of unity and strength. Millions more watched online.

My Future My Voice launched on Earth Day’s 50th anniversary, bringing focus on young environmental leaders across the globe. These Youth Ambassadors help protect biodiversity, increase the green cover, manage waste, work to reach net zero carbon emission, put art forms to use as effective communication techniques, save precious natural resources and, just as importantly, educate others as well. At present, Youth Ambassadors (some even below the age of 10 years) from over 50 countries in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, South America, the Middle-East and Island States of the Pacific Rim are enrolled in My Future My Voice. We provide them opportunities to engage with discussions on UN platforms, tools, training and more, so that they hone their skills to lead environmental actions even wider.

CONSERVATION & RESTORATION

Canopy Project: Since 2010, EARTHDAY.ORG has planted hundreds of millions of trees in 32 countries , focusing on areas most in need of reforestation. The Canopy Project has empowered rural and urban people to conserve, repair, and restore tree cover to their lands and rebuild local economies. Tree planting projects take place in communities challenged by the impacts of climate change and deforestation – often drought, flood, landslide, hurricane or forest fire – with resulting food insecurity and community destabilization. Each project includes community training and education to ensure long-term tree survival and to build sustainable economies for people most in need.

The Great Global Cleanup® / Plastics Pollution Campaign:  The Great Global Cleanup successfully launched in April 2019 in thousands of cities and towns across the U.S. with 5,300 events and over 510,000 volunteers. Simultaneously in India, EARTHDAY.ORG launched a landmark citizen-led cleanup of the iconic River Ganges —India’s most famous and sacred river to encompass 100 riverside cities and towns. On September 21, 2019, working with World Cleanup Day and National Cleanup Day, over 36 million people in 169 countries participated in cleanups on a single day. In April 2020, despite pandemic restrictions, over 5 million volunteers in the U.S, and 15 million globally completed local cleanups with a goal of creating clean communities and ending waste pollution worldwide. Since launching in 2018, the Plastic Pollution campaign has increased awareness of the many issue surrounding plastic pollution ad generated millions of digital engagements .

Farmers for Earth , launched on World Food Day 2019, is a free, information-sharing platform for small and medium-sized farmers. It provides opportunities for farmers to connect with sustainable agriculture practitioners and subject experts, receive information on funding sources to avail for a switch to environment-friendly measures, and establish dialogues with growers across the country, to learn about ways they use water judiciously for irrigation as also other techniques of climate-resistant farming. Tried and tested benefits of growing multi-crops, the efficacy of collective seed banks, ways to preserve post-harvest produce, positives of a switch to solar-powered pump systems and market linkages that offer the most competitive prices, are also discussed.

Over 100 Farmer Producer Organizations and NGOs have already participated in our train-the-trainer model webinars. Their collective outreach is to around 500,000 farmers , all of whom now have access to the common platform. We continue with in-depth training for these enrolled members and widen the outreach to others, so that a significantly larger percentage of India’s farmers practice climate-resilient agriculture.

RESEARCH & SCIENCE

EARTH CHALLENGE 2020®: EARTHDAY.ORG, the U.S. Department of State’s Eco-Capitals Forum and the Wilson Center launched Earth Challenge 2020—a global citizen science initiative that unites ordinary citizens with state-of-the-art science and demonstrates how each person’s small digital acts can add up to global change.    Using mobile technology and an opensource citizen science database, EC2020 empowers people around the world to help monitor and improve environmental and human health. To date, over 50 million data points  (via 10s of thousands of app downloads) have been captured and are available to researchers worldwide, as the database continues to grow.

Urban Environment Report (2012): EARTHDAY.ORG’s Urban Environment Report (UER) broadened our view of environmental quality of life by taking into account those who often suffer the most but are heard the least. UER scored the environmental performance of 72 of our nation’s cities based on over 200 indicators , taking into account those populations which may have greater sensitivity or susceptibility to environmental, health, and social problems.

Climate Change and the American Diet (2020): In partnership with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, EARTHDAY.ORG released a groundbreaking study , covered by news outlets across the globe, on American’s food choices and eating habits, motivations and barriers to purchasing plant-based foods, and the awareness of our food’s connection to global warming.

Chris Kerr was 12 when he first observed a deathbed vision. His memory of that summer in 1974 is blurred, but not the sense of mystery he felt at the bedside of his dying father. Throughout Kerr’s childhood in Toronto, his father, a surgeon, was too busy to spend much time with his son, except for an annual fishing trip they took, just the two of them, to the Canadian wilderness. Gaunt and weakened by cancer at 42, his father reached for the buttons on Kerr’s shirt, fiddled with them and said something about getting ready to catch the plane to their cabin in the woods. “I knew intuitively, I knew wherever he was, must be a good place because we were going fishing,” Kerr told me.

Kerr now calls what he witnessed an end-of-life vision. His father wasn’t delusional, he believes. His mind was taking him to a time and place where he and his son could be together, in the wilds of northern Canada.

Kerr followed his father into medicine, and in the last 10 years he has hired a permanent research team that expanded studies on deathbed visions to include interviews with patients receiving hospice care at home and with their families, deepening researchers’ understanding of the variety and profundity of these visions.

Co-hosted by MIT Energy Initiative and MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric, & Planetary Sciences

Last year shattered global heat records. The world witnessed the effects of rising temperatures in the form of devastating wildfires, severe flooding, extreme heatwaves, and more. Poor countries and communities who have contributed the least to causing the climate crisis are bearing the brunt of its accelerating impacts. But, it’s not too late to correct course, and progress on decarbonizing energy is paramount to securing a 1.5C future. Join Ani Dasgupta, the president and CEO of World Resources Institute, for a discussion on how the just energy transition in key countries can lead to a global tipping point for a more resilient, equitable world.

About the speaker Ani Dasgupta is president and CEO of the World Resources Institute (WRI), where he works to advance the institute’s global vision to improve the lives of all people and ensure that nature can thrive. He took the helm at WRI after seven years as global director of WRI’s Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, which is dedicated to shaping a future where cities work better for all people.

Under his leadership, WRI set a bold new five-year strategy—Getting the Transition Right for People, Nature, and Climate 2023-2027—which sets the course for a new era of economic opportunity to meet people’s essential needs, restore nature, and rapidly lower emissions while building resilient communities.

He developed his expertise in positions ranging from nonprofits in India to the World Bank. A widely recognized leader in sustainable cities, poverty alleviation, and building cultures of inclusion, Dasgupta has built strong cross-sector, multi-national coalitions with governments, corporations, and civil society.

On this year’s Earth Day, theaters will showcase a special version of the film for one day only, spreading the message of regenerative models of agriculture. This never-before-seen version of the documentary includes pre-recorded Q&A sessions featuring the filmmakers co-stars of the film and along with new scenes.

Directed and produced by Joshua Tickell and Rebecca Harrell Tickell and distributed by Area 23a ( Fantastic Fungi ), the award-winning Common Ground is the recipient of over 20 major film awards including Tribeca Film Festival Human Nature Award, Boston Film Festival Mass Eco Award & Best Eco Film and the International Green Film Award.

Narrated by Laura Dern, Jason Momoa, Rosario Dawson, Ian Somerhalder, Woody Harrelson and Donald Glover, the film fuses journalistic expose with stories from those on the front lines of the food movement unveiling a web of money, power, and politics behind our broken food system and revealing how the practices forged our current farm system in which farmers of all colors are literally dying to feed us.

“We are thrilled that icon Laura Dern, and cinema titan AMC Theatres and other exhibitors, will join us for a nationwide celebration of our commitment to regeneration,” said filmmakers Joshua Tickell and Rebecca Harrell Tickell. “Their influence and reach is unmatched, and they are the perfect partners in our quest to spread the message of regenerating our food, farming and climate to communities of environmentally conscious people across the country.  Let’s unite on Earth Day to inspire positive change for the future of our planet!”

Through these perspectives, Common Ground offers a portrait of the white, black, and indigenous farmers who are using alternative “regenerative” models of agriculture that could balance the climate, save our health, and stabilize America’s economy.

Presented by Big Picture Ranch and Area 23A.
