What is the Standard Name for 11×17 Paper on a Printer?
If you’ve ever found yourself standing in front of a printer, scratching your head and wondering what on earth that large piece of paper is called, you’re not alone. 11×17 paper has a unique size that doesn’t quite fit into the standard A-series or letter sizes we’re used to. But fear not, dear reader, because I am here to unravel the mystery and bring you the answer you seek!
11×17 Paper: Tabloid or Ledger
When it comes to 11×17 paper, there are actually two commonly used names: tabloid and ledger. No, we’re not talking about scandalous newspapers or financial records here. These names refer specifically to the size of the paper in question.
Tabloid is the name typically used in the printing industry in the United States, while ledger is more commonly used in the context of printers and copiers. This can understandably lead to some confusion, especially if you find yourself needing to purchase this unique size for your printing needs.
Why Tabloid and Ledger
Now, you may be wondering why on earth these seemingly unrelated words have been used to describe a simple 11×17 piece of paper. Let’s do a bit of digging and uncover the origin of these names.
The term tabloid actually comes from the newspaper industry. Tabloid-sized newspapers are well-known for their compact and easily readable format. But don’t let that fool you, as tabloid-sized paper measures 11×17 inches, making it larger than the regular letter size.
On the other hand, the term ledger has its roots in accounting. Ledgers are large, horizontal books used for keeping financial records. It makes sense then that a piece of paper measuring 11×17 inches, which provides ample space for recording data, would be referred to as ledger-sized paper in the printer world.
So, which term should you use
The choice between tabloid and ledger largely depends on your location and the industry you find yourself in. If you’re in the United States and working with printers, chances are you’ll commonly hear it referred to as tabloid-sized paper . However, if you’re in the realm of accounting or handling financial documents, ledger-sized paper may be the more fitting term.
Ultimately, it’s important to use the term that your audience will understand. If in doubt, it never hurts to clarify by simply referring to it as 11×17 paper . After all, no matter the name, we can all agree that this larger-than-life paper size is a mighty tool for bringing our creative visions to life!
And there you have it, my friend! The secret behind the names of 11×17 paper on a printer has been revealed. Whether you prefer to call it tabloid or ledger, embrace the power of this unique size and let your imagination run wild! Happy printing!
FAQ: What is 11×17 paper called on a printer?
As a writer, I understand that navigating the world of printing can be a daunting task. With the array of paper sizes available, it’s easy to feel confused. Fear not, my friend! In this FAQ-style guide, we’ll answer all your burning questions about 11×17 paper and its various names, dimensions, and compatibility with printers. So, grab a cup of coffee and let’s dive in!
Is 11×17 paper A4
No, 11×17 paper is not A4. A4 paper is the standard size used in most countries around the world, measuring 8.27 x 11.69 inches or 210 x 297 millimeters. On the other hand, 11×17 paper is a different beast altogether. It’s larger, measuring 11 x 17 inches or 279 x 432 millimeters. So, if you’re searching for A4-sized paper, keep on looking!
What does tabloid mean in printer
When we hear the word “tabloid,” juicy celebrity gossip might come to mind. But in the printing world, tabloid refers to a specific paper size . Tabloid paper measures 11 x 17 inches or 279 x 432 millimeters, just like our friend, 11×17 paper. So, if your printer asks for tabloid-sized paper, you know they’re craving those tantalizing 11×17 inches.
Is tabloid paper A5
Oh, my friend, I’m afraid not. While they may sound similar, tabloid paper and A5 paper are as different as night and day. A5 paper measures 5.83 x 8.27 inches or 148 x 210 millimeters, making it significantly smaller than tabloid and 11×17 paper. So, if you’re looking to print something in A5 size, remember, you’re venturing into the realm of the petite, not the generous tabloid.
What is ledger paper
Ah, ledger paper! It sounds so important, doesn’t it? Well, buckle up, because it’s essentially the same size as tabloid and 11×17 paper. Ledger paper measures 11 x 17 inches or 279 x 432 millimeters, making it yet another name for our beloved 11×17 sheets. Whether you call it ledger or tabloid, it’s all just a matter of paper size semantics.
Is 11×17 A3 or A4
I can understand how the alphabet soup of paper sizes can make your head spin. But fear not, my friend! 11×17 paper is neither A3 nor A4. As we discussed earlier, A4 paper measures 8.27 x 11.69 inches or 210 x 297 millimeters, while A3 paper is even larger at 11.69 x 16.54 inches or 297 x 420 millimeters. So, if you’re in search of A3 or A4, you need to take a detour from the 11×17 route.
What are the different types of paper sizes in printing
Ah, the world of paper sizes! It’s a wild jungle out there. In the realm of printing, you’ll encounter various standard paper sizes. A few notable ones include:
- A4: The standard size used in most countries, measuring 8.27 x 11.69 inches or 210 x 297 millimeters.
- A3: A larger size often used for posters or presentations, measuring 11.69 x 16.54 inches or 297 x 420 millimeters.
- Tabloid/Ledger/11×17: This generously sized paper measures 11 x 17 inches or 279 x 432 millimeters.
- A5: A smaller option that’s handy for booklets, measuring 5.83 x 8.27 inches or 148 x 210 millimeters.
These are just a few examples, but there are plenty more sizes out there!
How do I print on tabloid paper
Printing on tabloid paper is as easy as pie! Just follow these simple steps:
- Open the document or image you want to print on your computer.
- Go to the Print menu by pressing Ctrl + P (or Command + P for Mac users).
- In the Print menu, select your printer from the options available.
- Look for the Page Setup or Paper Size option and click on it.
- From the dropdown menu, choose the tabloid or 11×17 paper size.
- Adjust any other printing settings, such as orientation or paper source.

Is Ledger and tabloid the same size
Indeed, they are! Ledger and tabloid are just different names for the same paper size. Both ledger and tabloid refer to paper measuring 11 x 17 inches or 279 x 432 millimeters. So, the next time someone asks if you have ledger or tabloid paper, you can confidently hand them those 11×17 sheets with a sly smile.
Is A5 the same as 8.5 x 11
Oh, no, my friend! A5 paper and 8.5 x 11 inches are two different animals. While A5 paper measures 5.83 x 8.27 inches or 148 x 210 millimeters, 8.5 x 11 inches is a standard paper size used in North America. So, when someone asks for A5, pull out your petite A5 paper and leave those 8.5 x 11-inch sheets for another occasion.
How do I get my HP printer to print 11×17

What’s another name for 11×17 paper
Ah, the wonders of paper nomenclature! Alongside 11×17, tabloid, and ledger, you might also hear 11×17 paper referred to as B size or ANSI B. It’s a like a secret code only us paper aficionados understand. Remembering all these names? Well, that’s why you have me to guide you through this paper labyrinth!
What paper size is A5
Ah, A5! It’s like the adorable little sibling of the paper family. A5 paper measures 5.83 x 8.27 inches or 148 x 210 millimeters. It’s a handy size, perfect for notebooks, brochures, or smaller prints. So, if you need something more compact than the generous 11×17 paper, A5 is your bite-sized option.
Is tabloid the same as A3
Oh, my friend, they may seem similar, but tabloid and A3 are two different beasts. Tabloid paper measures 11 x 17 inches or 279 x 432 millimeters, while A3 paper is larger, measuring 11.69 x 16.54 inches or 297 x 420 millimeters. So, if you’re in a printing pickle and need a specific size, always double-check whether you’re craving tabloid or the grandeur of A3.
How do I make my brother print 11×17
If you’re eager to have your trusty Brother printer yield those stunning 11×17 prints, follow these easy steps:
- Select your Brother printer from the available options.
- From the dropdown menu, select the tabloid or 11×17 paper size.
- Make any necessary adjustments to orientation or other printing settings.
- Hit the Print button and watch as your Brother printer works its magic on that glorious 11×17 canvas!
What is tabloid paper size
Tabloid paper is a glorious canvas that measures 11 x 17 inches or 279 x 432 millimeters. It’s like the MVP (most valuable paper) of the printing world, providing ample space for your grand ideas, artwork, or important documents. So, the next time you hear the word “tabloid,” forget the sensational news and embrace the magnificence of those 11×17 inches!
Can my printer print on 11×17 paper
Before we get your hopes up, my friend, it’s crucial to check whether your printer is capable of handling 11×17 paper. Not all printers are created equal, and some might have limitations on the paper sizes they can accommodate. To find out if your printer can handle 11×17 prints, consult the user manual or visit the manufacturer’s website for specifications. Don’t worry, though; if your printer can’t handle it, there’s always a world of print shops ready to help bring your 11×17 dreams to life!
Is A4 the same as 8.5 x 11
Ah, the battle of paper sizes! While A4 paper and 8.5 x 11 inches may have similar dimensions, they’re not quite the same. A4 paper measures 8.27 x 11.69 inches or 210 x 297 millimeters, whereas the 8.5 x 11 inches size is commonly used in North America. So, if you find yourself in need of A4 paper, don’t settle for the North American version, my friend. Always choose the size that aligns with your printing needs!
How do I make my paper size 11×17 in Word
If you’re ready to conquer the vast realm of 11×17 paper prints in Microsoft Word, follow these steps:
- Open your document in Microsoft Word.
- Go to the “Page Layout” tab on the toolbar.
- Click on the “Size” button and select “More Paper Sizes” from the dropdown menu.
- In the “Page Setup” dialog box, click on the “Paper” tab.
- Enter the dimensions “11” for width and “17” for height in the corresponding fields.
- Click “OK” to apply the changes.
- Voila! Your document is now ready to embrace the grandeur of 11×17 paper!
Is 11×17 the same as 17×11
Ah, my friend, dimensions can be a tricky game indeed! While 11×17 and 17×11 sound like sibling sizes, they are not the same. 11×17 paper measures 11 inches in width and 17 inches in height, whereas 17×11 flips the proportions, with 17 inches in width and 11 inches in height. So, whether you prefer the wider or taller perspective, make sure you get the right dimensions for your printing adventures!
And there you have it, my printing enthusiast! I hope this comprehensive FAQ-style guide has shed light on the enigmatic world of 11×17 paper and its various aliases. Now armed with knowledge and a touch of humor, go forth and conquer the world of printing with confidence, my friend! Cheers to 11×17, tabloid, ledger, and all the glorious paper sizes out there in the big wide printing universe!

How to Make a Ledger Size Lined Paper Template (11×17)
Materials & Supplies , Tutorials
Today, I’m showing you how to make a ledger size lined paper template for bookbinding. This is a great size for anyone looking to make a book that’s just slightly smaller than an A5. You see, A5 books are technically 8.3″ x 5.8″ in size. But, if you shave off 3/10 of an inch in each direction, you could easily make a book 8.0″ x 5.5.” Since 11×17 paper is easier to find and generally less expensive than it’s larger counterpart (12×18), it’s a much more affordable option for most binders.
Side note : if you’re brand new, have never sewn a signature in your life and are a little nervous, try my 8-1/2″ x 11″ tutorial and template . It’s better to get practice with a size as accessible as 8-1/2″ x 11″ than to never start at all, especially if you only have access to this size paper.
Two signatures from one sheet
Here’s the good news: ledger size paper will yield two 8.0″ x 5.5″ signatures from just one sheet ! This means there is only one inch worth of unused paper to recycle and minimal cutting. In fact, this particular template only requires two cuts! Let’s get started.
Instructions
I used Adobe InDesign to create the template because InDesign is used to organize text and other content for catalogs, books, portfolios and more. It’s very straight-forward and intended for this type of work.
Before sitting down in front of a computer, I will sketch the page on a sheet of paper beforehand. It’s not pretty, but it allows me to visualize the end result. This is important for me because I am visual/kinesthetic.
11×17 Page layout
Page height: 17.0” Page width: 11”
11×17 Page settings (for two 8.0″ x 5.5″ signatures)
- Margin-top: 0”
- Margin-bottom: 1.0”
- Margin-inside: 0.25”
- Margin-outside: 0.25”
- Columns: 2 (each column is a page)
- Gutter: 0.5”
11×17 Table settings
- Border: 0pt (I’m removing any border around the entire table)
- Space before/after: 0
- First Rows: 0 (the header is technically the first “row”, so I skip the program’s idea of a first row with a zero)
- Next: 27 rows / 0.25pt
Creating the lined pages
After creating the table style, it’s time to create the table itself. To do this, you’ll go to Table > Create table and enter the number of columns, rows, headers and footers necessary.
Each table just needs one column, one header and 27 rows. No footer.
Once the table is “drawn”, you’ll start to see the page coming together.
Creating the page title
Next, I set the height of the header row to be 1/2.” This gave the top of the page enough room for a date, entry title or anything else I might want to write before journaling. Since it’s a “header” row, the line is darker by default.
The main body of lines were set to a height equal to 0.27″ each. This is a great height for print or cursive handwriting.
Finally, I gave the last row of the table a height of 1/2″ to add balance.
Rinse and repeat
Once the first table is created, it’s as simple as copy/paste! I copied the table four times – top left, top right, bottom left and bottom right.
This can be easily printed at home, but If you don’t have a printer, export your template as a PDF, load it on a thumb drive and take it to any big box office supply store (Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, etc.). Just be aware – most of these places charge anywhere from 25 to 39 cents per sheet for double-sided printing.
If you’re printing at home, turn the sheet over and run it through again to print on the other side. This makes one signature with 4 total pages. If you have a printer with double-sided print capability, this won’t be an issue (lucky you!!).
My preferred paper & printer
I print my lined paper on a Canon Pixma Pro-100 Inkjet printer using some of my preferred paper . I choose paper that is 100% recycled, environmentally-friendly and compatible with nearly all printers.
Hope you found this helpful!

Most products can be printed 11x17, but there are some notable exceptions:
Binding Limitations for 11x17
- Books & Booklets
The binding edge cannot be more than 11", so we are limited to binding 11x17 books on the short side. Some book types, like Perfect Bound and Saddle Stitch, cannot have a finish size larger than 8.5x11 regardless of the binding edge. These two binding types in particular must be bound on the 11" when printing 8.5x11.
Perfect bound books have covers which wrap around the inside pages to create a spine, so binding on the 8.5" side would require us to print on paper larger than we are able to print.
In 8.5x11 stapled booklets, each double sided "page" in the finished booklet is actually half of an 11x17 sheet which is stacked, folded and stapled. Hence, stapling on the 8.5" side would require sheets which are 22" long, which is larger than we are able to print.
- Envelopes & Mailing
11x17 printing must be folded in half to 8.5x11 before it can be mailed. We also offer right-angle folding options, which can fit 11x17 brochures and letters into standard #10 envelopes.
The largest envelopes we have available for printing are 9x12.

You may not need to change the page size.
Instead, in the print dialog box, put a check next to "Scale to fit paper" after you've selected the printer you want to use and set it's properties to use 11x17 (ledger) paper size.

The Ledger paper size is a large landscape format measuring 17 inches wide by 11 inches tall, giving it a width-to-height aspect ratio of 17:11 and a surface area of 187 square inches. Ledger is used for expansive graphical, technical, and pictorial layouts requiring more space than standard portrait sizes. It is also referred to as Tabloid. Its dimensions match the ANSI B size but with a different aspect ratio.
The origins of the Ledger name come from its use as a reference to large formal accounting books. Ledger's association with its synonymous Tabloid size emerged in the late 19th century newspaper publishing industry to differentiate expansive broadsheet formats from compact tabloid-formatted papers. While the "tabloid journalism" connotation continues today, the Ledger/Tabloid paper dimensions persist as a standard oversized landscape format in the United States, Canada, and some South American countries. It remains popular for wide graphical and pictorial layouts needing horizontal space.

What is 11 x 17 Paper Called? – Understanding Tabloid and Ledger Size Paper
Table of Contents
If you’re in the printing or design industry, you might have come across 11 x 17 paper, but did you know that it has another name? In this article, we will explore 11 x 17 paper’s alternative names and dive into the details of tabloid and ledger size paper.
Standard Paper Sizes
Before we delve into 11 x 17 paper, let’s discuss the most common paper sizes. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has defined the A-series paper sizes, with A4 being the most widely used size worldwide. A4 paper measures 8.27 x 11.69 inches and is the standard size for printing documents, letters, and forms.
In the United States, the Letter size paper is the most common size, measuring 8.5 x 11 inches. Business cards, brochures, and flyers are typically printed on smaller paper sizes, such as A5 or 5.5 x 8.5 inches.
Tabloid Size Paper
Tabloid size paper is another name for 11 x 17 paper. This size is commonly used in the printing and publishing industry for newspapers, magazines, and booklets. It measures 11 x 17 inches or 279 x 432 millimeters and is twice the size of Letter size paper.
Tabloid size paper is ideal for printing large images, graphics, and technical drawings. Architects and engineers often use this size for their blueprints, while artists and photographers use it for their prints. Additionally, tabloid size paper is perfect for creating folded brochures, menus, and newsletters.
Tabloid size paper is also known as “B size” paper. The B series paper sizes are a bit larger than the A-series sizes and are used mainly for posters and other large prints.
Ledger size paper is another large paper size that is commonly used in the printing and publishing industry. It measures 11 x 17 inches or 279 x 432 millimeters, the same as tabloid size paper. However, the key difference between the two is their orientation.
Ledger size paper is oriented horizontally, while tabloid size paper is oriented vertically. This orientation makes ledger size paper ideal for printing spreadsheets, charts, and financial documents.
In the United States, ledger size paper is also known as “Tabloid Extra” or “C size” paper. The C series paper sizes are slightly larger than the B-series sizes and are used mainly in the envelope industry.
Ledger size paper is also used in the legal industry for printing legal documents and pleadings. It is also used in the education industry for printing large art prints and posters.
Overall, understanding the different paper sizes and their uses is essential in the printing and publishing industry. Whether you’re printing a document or creating a poster, choosing the right paper size can make all the difference in the final output. In the next section, we will compare 11 x 17 paper to other paper sizes to determine its advantages and disadvantages.
Comparison of 11 x 17 Paper to Other Sizes
Now that we’ve explored the definition and uses of tabloid and ledger size paper, let’s compare 11 x 17 paper to other paper sizes.
Compared to Letter size paper, 11 x 17 paper provides twice the space for printing. This makes it an excellent choice for creating large-format brochures, menus, and marketing materials. It also allows for printing technical drawings, schematics, and maps in their actual size.
Compared to A4 paper, 11 x 17 paper is larger and provides more space for printing. While A4 paper is adequate for printing most documents, 11 x 17 paper is ideal for creating larger prints and publications, such as newspapers and magazines.
However, 11 x 17 paper is not suitable for all printing needs. It may not be the best choice for printing small documents, such as business cards or postcards. Additionally, it may not fit in standard printers or copiers, which may require special paper trays.
In conclusion, 11 x 17 paper is an essential paper size in the printing and publishing industry. Also known as tabloid size paper, it provides twice the space of Letter size paper, making it ideal for creating large prints and publications. Its counterpart, ledger size paper, is oriented horizontally and is used mainly for spreadsheets and financial documents.
It’s essential to choose the right paper size for your printing needs, as using the wrong size can affect the final output. Whether you’re creating a brochure or printing a technical drawing, understanding the different paper sizes and their uses is crucial. So next time you’re printing a document, consider using 11 x 17 paper and experience the benefits it provides.
Now that we understand 11 x 17 paper’s alternative names and its uses, let’s compare it to other standard paper sizes. One of the most significant advantages of 11 x 17 paper is its size. It provides ample space for printing large images, graphics, and technical drawings, which is not possible on smaller paper sizes. Additionally, 11 x 17 paper can be folded in half to create a booklet or brochure, making it a versatile and practical choice for printing.
While the size of 11 x 17 paper is undoubtedly a benefit, it can also be a disadvantage. Its large size means that it requires more ink or toner, which can be costly. Additionally, not all printers can handle this paper size, so it is essential to check your printer’s specifications before printing on 11 x 17 paper.
When compared to Letter size paper, 11 x 17 paper has more than twice the surface area. However, it is not as widely available as Letter size paper, and it can be more challenging to find in stores. Moreover, 11 x 17 paper is not suitable for printing standard documents, such as letters or forms, as it is too large.
In conclusion, understanding paper sizes is crucial for anyone in the printing or publishing industry. In this article, we explored 11 x 17 paper’s alternative names and the details of tabloid and ledger size paper. We learned that tabloid size paper is ideal for printing large images and creating folded brochures, while ledger size paper is ideal for printing spreadsheets and financial documents.
We also compared 11 x 17 paper to other standard paper sizes and discussed its advantages and disadvantages. While its size is beneficial for printing large images and graphics, it can be costly and may not be suitable for printing standard documents.
In today’s digital age, where paperless communication is becoming more prevalent, understanding paper sizes might seem insignificant. However, for those in the printing or publishing industry, paper sizes play a significant role in producing high-quality prints and publications. Therefore, knowing the different paper sizes and their uses is essential for anyone in this field.

Recent updates, all reviews, the 3 best 11x17 printers - spring 2024 reviews.
Depending on your industry, you may need a printer that can print 11x17 sheets, also known as tabloid or ledger paper. These large format printers should be able to print a large number of pages at a quick pace while remaining cost-effective. Additional features like a sheetfed scanner and duplex scanning are a plus as they help streamline your work. Currently, all the printers we've tested capable of producing 11" x 17" prints are inkjets, as laser printers that support tabloid size are usually enterprise-grade models that cost significantly more.
We've tested over 135 printers, and below are our recommendations for the best large-format printers you can buy. For other printer recommendations, check out our picks for the best all-in-one printers , the best home printers , and the best printers for small businesses .
Best 11x17 Printer
The best 11x17 printer we've tested is the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740, an all-in-one model designed for small or home offices. It prints incredibly sharp documents and sports tons of features, like an 11x17 flatbed scanner, single-pass duplex scanning, and a large, touch-sensitive control panel. Connectivity options include the usual Wi-Fi, USB, and Ethernet, and you can also print directly off a USB flash drive. Its print speed is on the slower side at 12 black or 8 color pages per minute, but it does support automatic duplex printing. Additionally, its input trays hold a total of 500 sheets of paper, so you won't have to refill the tray as often.
Its page yield is great; you can expect to get around 1,100 black and 600 color prints per set of regular cartridges, and you can get XL cartridges if you print more. The ink cartridges are relatively cheap, so you don't have to worry about high running costs. While this printer is mainly for office use, it's pretty decent for photo printing. Printed pictures look detailed but noticeably darker than the original because this model can't produce bright, saturated colors and replaces them with darker tones. They also look grainier than what you can get on a photo printer like the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 below.

Best Budget 11x17 Printer
Our best budget pick is the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-7840. This all-in-one has many connectivity options, including USB, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet, and it can also print directly off a USB flash drive. The scanner has an automatic feeder and supports automatic duplex scanning, making it easy to process multi-page and double-sided documents. It produces very sharp documents and prints relatively quickly for an inkjet model. For photo printing, it has a decently wide color gamut; however, its color accuracy is just okay, and there's a lot of grain in the photos.
Unfortunately, this printer's yield is pretty low, as a set of ink cartridges only gets you around 350 black and 300 color prints. The cartridges are cheap, so the cost per print isn't an issue; however, it's inconvenient because you'll likely need to interrupt your print jobs to replace them. If you can afford to spend a little more upfront, it's worth getting the HP above, as you'll save more money in the long run due to its higher page yield.
Best 11x17 Photo Printer
If you're looking specifically to print photos and want the best print quality, get the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300. This professional-grade photo printer produces incredibly detailed, vibrant, and color-accurate photos. It supports borderless printing and paper sizes up to 13" x 19". It uses nine ink cartridges, some of which are photo cartridges that work only on glossy photo paper, meaning you won't have to worry about depleting the photo ink if you want to print normal documents or reports. Its cost per print is decent; it's very cheap to print in black, but the color cartridges are expensive. Unfortunately, this is a print-only model, so you'll have to get a separate scanner to digitize photos.
If you find the Canon too expensive, get the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 instead. It also produces amazing photos; the main difference is that it's less color-accurate than the Canon, as it tends to oversaturate the colors to make them appear more vibrant. However, it has a scanner, and it's much cheaper to maintain because its refillable ink tanks yield significantly more prints. It also prints faster, taking only 48 seconds to print a 4" x 6" picture. Like the Canon, it supports various paper sizes up to 13" x 19".
- Epson EcoTank ET-15000: If you have a large print load, the Epson EcoTank ET-15000 is a good alternative to the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740. The printer costs more upfront, but you won't have to spend as much on ink over time because it yields significantly more prints. However, its print quality isn't as good, and it can only print on 11x17 paper via the smaller-capacity rear feeder. It also has a smaller flatbed scanner and doesn't support duplex scanning.
