Solutions For All Stages Of Your Dance Life

How to Write an Observation Paper or Critique

May 4, 2009 by Nichelle Suzanne (owner/editor)

Want a better grade on your paper? This guide will help you organize your thoughts regarding an observed performance (specifically a dance performance)… it may prove helpful to you in preparing and writing your reaction to or critique of anything. In fact, I’ve even used bold print on statements of universal importance.

Those of you studying dance academically at the college or high school level have probably been  (or will at some time be) asked to express in writing your reaction to a dance performance. These essays go by many names (observations, critiques, reactions), however, the format is generally the same – two pages of double spaced… what?

  • What am I supposed to write about?
  • How do I describe movement?
  • What should I be looking for when I watch dance?
  • How should I format the paper?
  • What is expected of me?

Writing Your Reactions to a Performance

Preparation and Recording

  • Develop some background knowledge. Read articles, class material, and descriptions of the dance company, artist, and/or dances you will be seeing. This little bit of additional knowledge can go a long way in helping you watch and write about the performance.
  • Arrive early to the performance and read through any program notes and biographies.
  • Keep a writing utensil handy to record notes in the program or in a pad of paper .
  • Record keywords and phrases regarding what you see, feel, hear, and experience.
  • Do not judge your own perceptions .
  • Are certain things repeated? Do the dancers move in lines or formations?
  • Is there distance between individuals or groups of dancers? Does the head follow the elbow in a turn or does the dancer focus outward, beyond himself?
  • Does the music make you tense or agitated? Do the movements remind you of popcorn one moment and falling leaves the next?
  • How does the performance affect you and/or others in the audience?

Structuring Your Paper

  • Are there themes or patterns in your responses?
  • Were your reactions to certain works stronger than others?
  • What stands out as you look at your notes?
  • Determine what you will detail in your central paragraphs. Three or four paragraphs is usually appropriate. You may want to go ahead and draft these paragraphs, covering one or two dance pieces in detail or writing in depth about aspects of the performance (themes or motifs, costumes, lighting, etc.), for example. Each paragraph should have a clear focus and begins with a thought that sets up the supportive sentences that follow.
  • Jot down a few thoughts or keywords that summarize this collection of paragraphs. This is helpful in creating your introductory and concluding paragraphs. Have you focused a lot on the color of things, be it in lighting, costume, or even mood of the pieces, for example? Again consider patterns as you seek to organize your thoughts.

Writing Your Paper

Your introduction.

Set the Scene — Include the name of the artist or company in your opening lines. Other possibilities include where and when and even under what conditions you are viewing the performance.

Your introduction should also set up the central paragraphs (the meat of your paper) with a thesis statement. A strong introduction will summarize in one or two sentences what is similar or related about the paragraphs ahead while giving the reader a sense of your prevailing reaction to the work. (For more on forming thesis statements see this article at the George Mason University website )

Your Observations

Use specific and descriptive language when writing about what you’ve seen.

  • Use action words that imply a quality or attribute of the movement (slithered, sauntered, bounded, careened instead of rolled, walked, leaped, or turned)
  • Use vivid adjectives to describe qualities of the lighting, costuming, or other elements (cast cheerless shadows, donned gaudy colors and fabrics, carved intricate pathways)
  • Generally, you’ll want to write in the present tense . What you see, hear, feel, and sense rather than what you saw, heard, felt, etc. There are cases that past tense might be appropriate but choreography or performance work is best described as something that continues to exist rather than something that has ended or passed. Whatever you choose, be aware and try not to mix tense within the same paragraph or even within the same paper.

Include your interpretation of how the work(s) develop, how they change in mood, how the themes or mood of the piece is expressed.

When offering your opinions of a specific element or how effectively the work is carried out, support these with specific examples from the work (be wary of attempting to support opinion with blanket statements of belief – “The dancer is astonishing. She is an amazing turner and moves better than anyone else on stage.” vs. “The dancer is astonishing. Her turns have a serpentine fluidity, making her a standout every time she takes the stage.”)

Your Conclusion

Sum up your overall experiences and thoughts about the performance or restate your thesis in more detail.

Relate what you’ve seen to your study or past experiences

Reading, Revising, and Polishing Your Work

  • Read what you’ve written aloud to yourself or a friend. Is your meaning clear and does it read smoothly?
  • Leave the paper and then go back to it , reading and making any necessary revisions. Cut or tighten redundant (repetitive) statements, phrases, or paragraphs.
  • Check spelling (particularly on the spelling of names and titles within the production) and proper punctuation.
  • Be sure the paper is formatted to your instructor’s specifications before handing it in.
Remember, your reactions, feelings, and opinions are neither right or wrong, however, how well you express these in your writing will determine your grade.

Composing an effective observation essay about a performance takes preparation and an openness to receiving the dance presented.

Your state of mind when viewing a work can affect your perceptions so, try to be rested when you watch a performance, clearing your head of to-do lists or other extraneous thoughts.

I hope you find this guide helpful for drafting your performance critique or simply an assistance as you view dance.

Have you written an Observation/Reaction paper or critique?

If so, what are some things new writers might avoid , if you are new to writing about performance, what are your questions.

Writing movement: why dance criticism matters

Internationally, dance criticism has an illustrious literary past. Writers such as Paul Valery , TS Eliot, and Edwin Denby, amongst others, have all written on dance performance.

Denby, a poet and acclaimed dance critic for The New York Herald Tribune in the early 1940s, influenced Deborah Jowitt’s decision to embark on a career in dance criticism as far back as the early 1950s. Jowitt is particularly renowned and revered for her long service as dance critic for the New York Village Voice , starting in 1967.

At The Voice, like Arlene Croce at The New Yorker , Jowitt was allocated an amount of space for her reviews undreamt of in any Australian newspaper. There, she was able to develop a sensibility for dance, educated by the work she saw, and to refine her criticism as a distinct form of literature.

Jowitt is in Australia this week as an invited contributor to the wider program surrounding the second Keir choreographic awards (the first having taken place in 2014). The finals of the award will be judged at Carriageworks in Sydney this week.

Jowitt was, and remains, committed to writing about the dance aspect of dance performance: how it communicates through the materials of movement, the nuances of style, and the way these are handled by the performers. In her review At home in the body (1977) Jowitt wrote of a performance by the widely influential dancer Simone Forti that it felt as though you had,

all the time in the world…Once, she took her right hand off the floor, and, as if her weight had been equally distributed between four points, acknowledged the sudden imbalance by toppling over. You could say that not much happened; or you could say that within a few concrete actions, everything happened.

There is no ready-made language for describing the effects on a viewer of dancing itself – whatever the style of that dancing. Even well known dance critics internationally, such as Cyril Beaumont, who wrote for The Sunday Times, regularly failed to say anything much about the dancing in their reviews, concentrating instead on other aspects of the production.

The so-called “descriptive” approach developed by Jowitt has influenced later generations of critics to describe what it was like to be there – as a witness to the qualities and effects of a dance’s dancing.

Jowitt’s distinctive style also encoded an ethic of reviewing that was generous, intimate, avowedly subjective, and “not in the business of rating and ranking”. This didn’t mean that she was never critical: rather she was incisive.

Her reviews stand as important documents for the archive of dance history: Jowitt was there at the first revivals of Martha Graham ’s early 20th century works; she became interested in writing at the same time Merce Cunningham was founding his company.

She has witnessed the development of the oeuvres of several generations of American choreographic artists and dancers and has become familiar with countless works through multiple viewings and casts over decades – something that any music critic, for example, would take for granted but which is rare in dance.

dance critique essay brainly

Dance performances are too often seen as a series of “one-offs”, without knowledge of their relation to a whole historical field of works and processes. A dedicated and informed reviewer can help an audience to both remember what a work was like, in its sensuous particularity, and to place the performance they have seen within a context of other works.

The reviewer can convey something of the work’s lineage. Most fundamentally, perhaps, an informed review is an indication that the work should be taken seriously.

As Richard Watts pointed out recently in ArtsHub , substantial reviewing is crucial to the development of a discerning public, which in turn supports the artform.

The Australian print media has largely failed to recognise this. All the more should we acknowledge the efforts of some long-standing and former dance reviewers around the country, including Jill Sykes and Mary Emery in Sydney, particularly at a time when Melbourne dancers were suffering the reviews of The Age’s Neil Jillet.

In an optimistic turn, online forums and the Australia Council funded Realtime are now providing a much needed opening for writers on the arts to develop their reviewing approaches and languages.

Jowitt’s visit for the Keir program will include her conducting a week-long dance writing seminar at Melbourne’s Dancehouse. We may see a much needed revitalisation of the dance critic’s craft.

SIL Electronic Working Papers, 2014-001

Sharon Merz

In this paper I examine Bebelibe family structure and social relationships. I start by looking at the overall structure of the society, which can be defined by its communities, lineages and families. This is followed by an overview of marriage and inheritance, kinship terminology and typology (duo-Iroquois) before looking at different family relationships. Of particular interest is the interplay between the maternal and paternal families. The paper includes case studies of how different relationships play out in real life and how these demonstrate the value people place on harmony and respect. I also explore the impact of social change, especially with regard to marriage.

Rights in Intimate Relationships (2010)

The resource book ‘Rights in Intimate Relationships’ seeks to understand rights in intimate relationships within a framework that recognizes rights for all women regardless of their sexuality, marital status, or legality of relationship. In proposing a framework based on ‘intimate relationships’ it moves beyond the boundaries of the exclusivist, marriage centric framework of conjugality in the law. The resource book examines customary and contemporary non normative intimacies in rural and urban India from a feminist perspective, relies upon constitutional, comparative and human rights law, to explore a transformatory rights agenda in respect of the family.

Multi-Country Analytical Study of Policies, Interventions & Cultural Practices on Child Marriage in Africa

Dr. Jack A Onyisi

his report presents a Multi-Country Analysis of Legislation, Policies, Interventions and Cultural Practices on Child Marriage in Africa. The study assessed the state of child marriage in Africa from practice to policy and interventions towards its eradication with a focus on ten countries with a comparatively higher prevalence of child marriage in the continent and globally. A critical emphasis of the study was on the nexus between the existence and implementation of the policies/legislation, and the dominant cultural and religious practices that affect the outcomes of the interventions in those countries, especially in identified hotspot areas within the countries. By focusing on the socio-cultural conditions, policy environment and eradication initiatives, the study provides critical information and perspectives, effective and appropriate programs/investment and policies in Africa to delay the age of marriage and end child marriage as a practice. The study confirms a decline in the prevalence of child marriage in the ten study countries (Democratic Republic of Congo - DRC, Egypt, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria and Tanzania) over the last three decades. Efforts have been intensified in eradicating child marriage, but it remains a persistent problem in Africa, with the study countries included in the 17 African countries ranked among those with the highest rates of child marriage globally.

Essay on Dance

500 words essay on dance.

Dancer refers to a series of set of movement to music which we can either do alone or with a partner. Dancing helps us express our feelings and get active as well. If we look back at history, dance has been a part of our human history since the earliest records. Thus, an essay on dance will take us through it in detail.

essay on dance

My Hobby My Passion

Dance is my favourite hobby and I enjoy dancing a lot. I started dancing when I was five years old and when I got older; my parents enrolled me in dance classes to pursue this passion.

I cannot go a day without dance, that’s how much I love dancing. I tried many dance forms but discovered that I am most comfortable in Indian classical dance. Thus, I am learning Kathak from my dance teacher.

I aspire to become a renowned Kathak dancer so that I can represent this classical dance internationally. Dancing makes me feel happy and relaxed, thus I love to dance. I always participate in dance competitions at my school and have even won a few.

Dance became my passion from an early age. Listening to the beats of a dance number, I started to tap my feet and my parents recognized my talent for dance. Even when I am sad, I put on music to dance to vent out my feelings.

Thus, dance has been very therapeutic for me as well. In other words, it is not only an escape from the world but also a therapy for me.

Hidden Language of the Soul

Dance is also called the hidden language of the soul as we use it to express ourselves when words fall short. The joy which comes with dancing helps us get over our sorrow and adversity sometimes.

Moreover, it is simply a translator for our hearts. What is most important to remember is that dance is not supposed to be perfect. There is no right way of dancing, as long as your heart is happy, you can dance.

When we talk about dance, usually a professional dancer comes to our mind. But, this is where we go wrong. Dance is for anybody and everybody from a ballet dancer to the uncle dancing at a wedding .

It is what unites us and helps us come together to celebrate joy and express our feelings. Therefore, we must all dance without worrying if we are doing it right or not. It is essential to understand that when you let go of yourself in dance, you truly enjoy it only then.

Conclusion of the Essay on Dance

All in all, dance is something which anyone can do. There is no right way or wrong way to dance, there is just a dance. The only hard part is taking the first step, after that, everything becomes easier. So, we must always dance our heart out and let our body move to the rhythm of music freely.

How to Write a Critique Paper: Format, Tips, & Critique Essay Examples

A critique paper is an academic writing genre that summarizes and gives a critical evaluation of a concept or work. Or, to put it simply, it is no more than a summary and a critical analysis of a specific issue. This type of writing aims to evaluate the impact of the given work or concept in its field.

Our specialists will write a custom essay specially for you!

  • best tips on how to critique an article or a literary work,
  • a critique paper example with introduction, body, and conclusion.

💁 What Is a Critique Paper?

  • 👣 Critical Writing Steps

👀 Critical Essay Types

📝 critique paper format, 📑 critique paper outline, 🔗 references.

A critique is a particular academic writing genre that requires you to carefully study, summarize, and critically analyze a study or a concept. In other words, it is nothing more than a critical analysis. That is all you are doing when writing a critical essay: trying to understand the work and present an evaluation. Critical essays can be either positive or negative, as the work deserves.

👣 How to Write a Critique Essay: Main Steps

Starting critique essays is the most challenging part. You are supposed to substantiate your opinion with quotes and paraphrases, avoiding retelling the entire text. A critical analysis aims to find out whether an article or another piece of writing is compelling. First, you need to formulate the author’s thesis: what was the literary work supposed to convey? Then, explore the text on how this main idea was elaborated. Finally, draft your critique according to the structure given below.

Critical Writing Steps Include: Critical Reading, Analyzing the Text, and Making the Draft.

Step 1: Critical Reading

1.1. Attentively read the literary work. While reading, make notes and underline the essentials.

  • Try to come into the author’s world and think why they wrote such a piece.
  • Point out which literary devices are successful. Some research in literary theory may be required.
  • Find out what you dislike about the text, i.e., controversies, gaps, inconsistency, or incompleteness.

1.2. Find or formulate the author’s thesis.

  • What is the principal argument? In an article, it can be found in the first paragraph.
  • In a literary work, formulate one of the principal themes, as the thesis is not explicit.
  • If you write a critique of painting, find out what feelings, emotions, or ideas, the artist attempted to project.

1.3. Make a summary or synopsis of the analyzed text.

  • One paragraph will suffice. You can use it in your critique essay, if necessary.
  • The point is to explore the gist.

Step 2: Analyzing the Text

After the reading phase, ask yourself the following questions :

  • What was your emotional response to the text? Which techniques, images, or ideas made you feel so?
  • Find out the author’s background. Which experiences made them raise such a thesis? What other significant works have they written that demonstrate the general direction of thought of this person?
  • Are the concepts used correctly in the text? Are the references reliable, and do they sufficiently substantiate the author’s opinion?

Step 3: Drafting the Essay

Finally, it is time to draft your essay. First of all, you’ll need to write a brief overview of the text you’re analyzing. Then, formulate a thesis statement – one sentence that will contain your opinion of the work under scrutiny. After that, make a one-paragraph summary of the text.

You can use this simple template for the draft version of your analysis. Another thing that can help you at this step is a summary creator to make the creative process more efficient.

Critique Paper Template

  • Start with an introductory phrase about the domain of the work in question.
  • Tell which work you are going to analyze, its author, and year of publication.
  • Specify the principal argument of the work under study.
  • In the third sentence, clearly state your thesis.
  • Here you can insert the summary you wrote before.
  • This is the only place where you can use it. No summary can be written in the main body!
  • Use one paragraph for every separate analyzed aspect of the text (style, organization, fairness/bias, etc.).
  • Each paragraph should confirm your thesis (e.g., whether the text is effective or ineffective).
  • Each paragraph shall start with a topic sentence, followed by evidence, and concluded with a statement referring to the thesis.
  • Provide a final judgment on the effectiveness of the piece of writing.
  • Summarize your main points and restate the thesis, indicating that everything you said above confirms it.

You can evaluate the chosen work or concept in several ways. Pick the one you feel more comfortable with from the following:

Just in 1 hour! We will write you a plagiarism-free paper in hardly more than 1 hour

  • Descriptive critical essays examine texts or other works. Their primary focus is usually on certain features of a work, and it is common to compare and contrast the subject of your analysis to a classic example of the genre to which it belongs.
  • Evaluative critical essays provide an estimate of the value of the work. Was it as good as you expected based on the recommendations, or do you feel your time would have been better spent on something else?
  • Interpretive essays provide your readers with answers that relate to the meaning of the work in question. To do this, you must select a method of determining the meaning, read/watch/observe your analysis subject using this method, and put forth an argument.

There are also different types of critiques. The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, in the article “ Writing critiques ,” discusses them as well as the appropriate critique language.

The last page of your paper should include a list of all sources cited in your essay. Here’s a general format of book and journal article citations you should use:

Book: Last name, First initial. Middle initial. (Year). Book title: Subtitle . Publisher.

Journal article: Last name, First initial. Middle initial. (Year). Title of the article. Journal Title, volume (issue number), start page–end page.

The main parts of good critical response essays are:

  • Introduction. The introduction is the most essential part of the critical response. It should be concise and include the author and title of the work being analyzed, its main idea, and a strong thesis statement.
  • Summary. This should be brief and to the point. Only the author’s/creator’s main ideas and arguments should be included.
  • Analysis/interpretation. Discuss what the author’s/creator’s primary goal was and determine whether this goal was reached successfully. Use the evidence you have gathered to argue whether or not the author/creator achieved was adequately convincing (remember there should be no personal bias in this discussion).
  • Evaluation/response. At this point, your readers are ready to learn your objective response to the work. It should be professional yet entertaining to read. Do not hesitate to use strong language. You can say that the work you analyzed was weak and poorly-structured if that is the case, but keep in mind that you have to have evidence to back up your claim.
  • Conclusion. The last paragraph of your work should restate the thesis statement, summarize the key points, and create a sense of closure for the readers.

Critique Paper Introduction

The introduction is setting the stage for your analysis. Here are some tips to follow when working on it:

  • Provide the reader with a brief synopsis of the main points of the work you are critiquing .
  • State your general opinion of the work , using it as your thesis statement. The ideal situation is that you identify and use a controversial thesis.
  • Remember that you will uncover a lot of necessary information about the work you are critiquing. You mustn’t make use of all of it, providing the reader with information that is unnecessary in your critique. If you are writing about Shakespeare, you don’t have to waste your or your reader’s time going through all of his works.

Critique Paper Body

The body of the critique contains the supporting paragraphs. This is where you will provide the facts that prove your main idea and support your thesis. Follow the tips below when writing the body of your critique.

  • Every paragraph must focus on a precise concept from the paper under your scrutiny , and your job is to include arguments to support or disprove that concept. Concrete evidence is required.
  • A critical essay is written in the third-person and ensures the reader is presented with an objective analysis.
  • Discuss whether the author was able to achieve their goals and adequately get their point across.
  • It is important not to confuse facts and opinions . An opinion is a personal thought and requires confirmation, whereas a fact is supported by reliable data and requires no further proof. Do not back up one idea with another one.
  • Remember that your purpose is to provide the reader with an understanding of a particular piece of literature or other work from your perspective. Be as specific as possible.

Critique Paper Conclusion

Finally, you will need to write a conclusion for your critique. The conclusion reasserts your overall general opinion of the ideas presented in the text and ensures there is no doubt in the reader’s mind about what you believe and why. Follow these tips when writing your conclusion:

  • Summarize the analysis you provided in the body of the critique.
  • Summarize the primary reasons why you made your analysis .
  • Where appropriate, provide recommendations on how the work you critiqued can be improved.

Example of Critique Paper with Introduction, Body, and Conclusion

Check out this critical response example to “The Last Inch” by James Aldridge to show how everything works in practice:

Introduction

In his story “The Last Inch,” James Aldridge addresses the issue of the relationship between parents and children. The author captured the young boy’s coming into maturity coinciding with a challenging trial. He also demonstrated how the twelve-year-old boy obtained his father’s character traits. Aldridge’s prose is both brutal and poetic, expressing his characters’ genuine emotions and the sad truths of their situations.

Body: Summary

The story is about Ben Ensley, an unemployed professional pilot, who decides to capture underwater shots for money. He travels to Shark Bay with his son, Davy. Ben is severely injured after being attacked by a shark while photographing. His last hope of survival is to fly back to the little African hamlet from where they took off.

Body: Analysis

The story effectively uses the themes of survival and fatherhood and has an intriguing and captivating plot. In addition, Ben’s metamorphosis from a failing pilot to a determined survivor is effectively presented. His bond with his son, Davy, adds depth and emotional importance to the story. At the same time, the background information about Ben’s past and his life before the shark attack could be more effectively integrated into the main story rather than being presented as separate blocks of text.

Body: Evaluation

I find “The Last Inch” by James Aldridge a very engaging and emotional story since it highlights the idea of a father’s unconditional love and determination in the face of adversity. I was also impressed by the vivid descriptions and strong character development of the father and son.

Conclusion

“The Last Inch” by James Aldridge is an engaging and emotional narrative that will appeal to readers of all ages. It is a story of strength, dedication, and the unbreakable link between father and son. Though some backstory could be integrated more smoothly, “The Last Inch” impresses with its emotional punch. It leaves the readers touched by the raw power of fatherly love and human will.

📚 Critique Essay Examples

With all of the information and tips provided above, your way will become clearer when you have a solid example of a critique essay.

Below is a critical response to The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

When speaking of feminist literature that is prominent and manages to touch on incredibly controversial issues, The Yellow Wallpaper is the first book that comes to mind. Written from a first-person perspective, magnifying the effect of the narrative, the short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman introduces the reader to the problem of the physical and mental health of the women of the 19th century. However, the message that is intended to concern feminist ideas is rather subtle. Written in the form of several diary entries, the novel offers a mysterious plot, and at the same time, shockingly realistic details.

What really stands out about the novel is the fact that the reader is never really sure how much of the story takes place in reality and how much of it happens in the psychotic mind of the protagonist. In addition, the novel contains a plethora of description that contributes to the strain and enhances the correlation between the atmosphere and the protagonist’s fears: “The color is repellent, almost revolting; a smoldering unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow-turning sunlight” (Gilman).

Despite Gilman’s obvious intent to make the novel a feminist story with a dash of thriller thrown in, the result is instead a thriller with a dash of feminism, as Allen (2009) explains. However, there is no doubt that the novel is a renowned classic. Offering a perfect portrayal of the 19th-century stereotypes, it is a treasure that is certainly worth the read.

Best Dance Essay Examples

Dance critique.

303 words | 2 page(s)

The movements were flowy and had constant movement. The dancers, there being two of them, did fast changes in their movement to a strong strum of the guitar in the song, which added to the flow. The arms and legs were emphasized a lot to show the fluidity of the song. The dancers started off crawling on the floor, but once they were standing there was a decent amount of spinning, and the man picked up and manipulated the woman frequently. For the most part, the song was slow, but at moments the dancers speed up a little to meet the strums of the guitar. The dancers were fluid and flowed together and around each other. There was a lot of repeated spinning and arm movements.

The dancers told a love story between two people without being too obvious. There was a clear short beginning and short end with a clear middle. The dancer fluidly danced from one spot on the stage to another and continued to use the whole stage during the dance. The use of slow movements broke up with quick movements made the dance stand out. For the most part, the music was slow, but at moments the guitar would have a fast few strums before slowing back down. There was more emphasis on the rhythm of the song then there were the words in the song.

The music gave the feeling of a close and romantic bond between the man singing and the woman he was talking to, which dancers conveyed in their movements. The costumes of the dancers were perfect for the way the song was fluid, such as the dance of the woman flowing around them as they moved. The dance reminds the viewers of the beauty of love and gives the feeling of happiness and longing.

Introduction

Take modern forms of communication, social media, twitter precisely, choreograph a few communicative moves, add captivating video, and you have a breathtaking dance performance, as a result. During this spring semester of 2014, I happened to attend a dance performance that warranted the description of outstanding. Directed and choreographed by David Roussève, "Stardust" is a trendsetter in the world of dance. Performed in the amazing auditorium at the University of Maryland, the movements, and the accentuations of video and lighting effect were breathtakingly presented, making the 85 minutes the dance lasted worth the sacrifice.

Synthesis and analysis

The dance crew consisted of 10 dancers that made the movements and combinations easy for the audience to understand. David Roussève performed a solo too, in compliment to the group routines. The dance follows the story of a black homosexual kid, detailing his struggles for friendship and acceptance in a world that seems to shun his sexual orientation. The messages screened on to the black space serve as the main elements communicating his condition. For instance, the opening message screened on to the seeming four dimension black void is an expression of his desires, ‘I want a BFF sooo bad, someone who understand how I feel and give me love’. The background of such messages expressing his desires and hopes is replicated on stage by the dancers. The messages and the movements of the dancers show his un-replicated quest for affection; thus the dance routines make much more sense when evaluated on the background of the screened messages. The dance motions kick happen intermittently with coordinated sequences, dancers dancing in unison, interspersed with a lone dancer gyrating wildly out of synch from the well choreographed moves. The synched dancers seem to represent the conformity expected in society, everyone falling in line to accustomed norms and manners. The lone dancer, out of synch with the other dancers seems to be expressing him/ herself in unfamiliar fashion, however, in rebellion or expression of his orientation. The dance progresses to a performance by all the dancers, some doing synched movements while others perform individual movements. They all withdraw from the dance floor unable to fit a common rhythm. This part shows the difficulty experienced in trying to fit society. The second segment of the dance comprised of acts by all the dancers, culminating in a sole exhibition, where the dancer gyrates energetically, culminating in a crescendo, simulating sexual gratification. The video enhancement shows a bird flying graciously against a clear background, indicating a possible harmony that would be achieved if everyone were left to pursue his or her happiness in an accommodating atmosphere (Lapecki, pag 109-45).

Analysis of the choreographic elements

The dance employed creative use of time as an element in its presentation. The theme builds up from the beginning, and then layered out in the sequences that follow, thus enhancing the ability of an observer to follow the message. At its start, the dance is slow and invites the observer to taking interest. As the time advances, the dance introduces elements that build on the initial introduction, showing the interaction of the protagonist, the gay kid, with the community, his struggles. This phase increases in tempo indicating the hustle of trying to fit in within a closeted society, in a single lifetime. Finally, at the close of the dance, and at the conclusion of time, a hypothetical success for the gay kid is acted out, and possible harmony in the society at individual liberties. The tempo in this phase is quick, showing the anxiousness characterized by one enjoying a rare success. Then, the tempo slows down showing the satisfaction of finding a rare moment of joy, and savoring it, never wanting it to end. The time is utilized, therefore, as an element that enables assimilation and acceptance of all cadres of individuals in society, in a sequential manner. The dancers utilized weight in synch with the effect their movements were intended to evoke. There were instances where the dancers seemed to float in the air, when the movements portrayed a lingering beyond the current moment (Lapecki, pag 109-45). This feature was prominent in the first and the last phases of the dance. Other movements were heavy and fast, especially in the middle phase of the dance, where the transitions between interactions were quick and mostly repulsive of contact. The stage space was utilized in conjunction with lighting. Areas where the action concentrated were illuminated by a single beam; however, it followed the dancers around the stage, helping amplify the sense of movement as an aspect of living, rather than routine in dance (Lapecki, pag 109-45). Further, the concentrated lighting and space effect helped in illumination of the beamed messages showing the happenings on stage to be happening in the larger scheme of things, the society. The contact between the dancers varied throughout the dance performance. Hard focus shone through in scenes where the performance required close contact, intimating intimacy, while indirect, indifferent, and individual performances occurred in places where solitude, neglect, and self expression were required.

Production and costuming

The dancers wore black outfits that could pass for casual wear in the body of the dance. The costumes helped make them appear as ordinary people navigating the challenges of life. In the sensual dance routines, however, the male dancers wore fitting outfits lending them a sexual feel, while the women wore loosely fitting and more revealing outfits than in the non-sensual scenes. The music employed in the actualization of the dance is a combination of jazz and hip hop sounds, which were applied in the appropriate sequences. The gloomy feeling to the dance, achieved through use of minimal lighting and dark costumes is thawed by the music, especially the hip hop beats which the audience could rock to being it not for the intenseness of the dance theme (Dixon, pag 76-87).

The dance was a successful representation of the theme it chose. The various elements are utilized to communicate the theme of homosexuality to the audience without risking portraying indecency, despite the high risk the subject matter presents. The audience leaves the auditorium informed, entertained, and inspired. The presentation manages to tackle a sensitive subject without polarizing opinion (Dixon, pag 76-87). This feat is managed by framing the struggles of the protagonist in a wider scheme of events and space. Comparison of his experiences and wishes against a wider rationalized community, rather than by stark presentation of the specificities on the subject reduces the sensitivity associated with the subject.
