Insights into Editorial: Can online learning replace the school classroom?

Introduction:

Online classes, no doubt, provide students to catch up on the classes lost due to the prolonged lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Attending classes online without a break is said to be causing problems like dry eye syndrome, burning sensation of eyes, and ear problems .

Educationists and doctors have their own reservations on online classes for primary classes. Doctors suggest use of laptops and external speakers, instead of earphones, to avoid eye and ear problems.

Prolonged use of earphones can result in noise-induced deafness . It can also cause tinnitus and the child may experience ringing sounds in the ear . Severe exposure may cause inability to hear certain frequencies. The problems depend on the duration and intensity of the sound.

The COVID-19 outbreak has disrupted the academic year , cancelled classes and examinations across the country.

To ensure that students do not miss out on their studies, schools moved classes online, forcing students to attend lectures via their gadgets.

However, this has also sparked a debate on whether the increased amount of screen time helps students learn or if it impedes their progress.

While Maharashtra has banned online classes from pre-primary to Class II, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh have extended the ban till Class V.

Reopening of Indian Schools:

Schools may be reopening abroad , but we cannot compare that to the situation in India. The schools that have opened in these countries are taking utmost precautions.

For instance, they are using tissue boxes for every class . Students can dump their used tissues in these boxes.

But the waste generated is so huge , and it will also require to be discarded safely .

Do Indian schools have that kind of infrastructure ?

Also, it is difficult to make children sit in the classroom wearing masks, without touching it. Or for them not to touch other children and their masks.

Reporting an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, is it viable to open schools?

• Education is not just about information or content delivered to students via screens. It is about a lot more. And most of it takes place through the social interactions in a school, with peers, with the teachers . Since online classes have begun, all that has been cut out.
• What’s worrying is the fact that the entire conversation has shifted to the use of technology .
• It is not just about computers and smartphones, even watching Doordarshan amounts to screen time.
• Nobody (in India) is really talking about turning schools into safe places , where education can resume.
• Social Interactions in schools would have other kinds of developmental and cognitive impact on the child and their development .
• It is high time that we started to talk about how the school actually can be made a space that is safe again, for children to come back to , rather than make a complete switch to online learning.

What will education look like once schools reopen post COVID-19?

There is a large section of the population that is unable to access technology and that’s a huge concern.

Children belonging to migrant families might have moved far away from their schools.

Government school teachers in Delhi were trying to reach some of the students whose mobile numbers they have, but they are not able to reach them, they have disappeared.

And these are kids who are going to be out of school soon. We don’t know whether their families will return to the cities and what’s going to happen to them.

Teachers are doing enough to develop better online modules, based on activities, but how many children are benefiting from it?

The problem is that our policy has always neglected the marginalised child . That is why we still have so many children who are not in school. All our policies tend to focus on those who already have access to certain facilities . We just forget the invisible the poor and the marginalised.

Alternatives that can ensure that students don’t fall back academically:

• During this pandemic, many of the policy fault lines across all sectors have come to the fore. Most of all in public health.
• The fact that our public health system is not geared towards such situations has become evident and obvious to everyone.
• Even within the education sector, it has become clear that we have not invested in our education system i n a way that it can take care of a situation like this.
• Going forward, we have to start thinking on these lines:
• We need to improve our education system in such a way that we do not have to keep schools closed in such situations.
• We need to make it possible for the students to have a safe environment in schools even during a pandemic.
• We need to ensure that there is no shortage of teachers . Itis not just about online instruction, but also about preparing action plans to deal with students who have lost out on education because of the pandemic.
• A majority of the students who were unable to access technology in this pandemic may become drop-outs. This goes against their fundamental right to education.

What are the dangers of exposing children to screens at such a young age of kindergarten?

Online classes for young children may cause stress on their growing brains . In the actual classroom scenario, they get breaks, interact with friends and the surrounding atmosphere would be conducive to the learning process.

Sitting for long hours watching the mobile screen or laptop is not advisable for them.

Exposing children to screens from a young age is not right. It can hamper their overall development. The light emitted from the screen can strain children’s eyes and could lead to vision problems throughout their lives.

Watching a screen is also a passive activity that can make children lethargic and affect their thinking skills.

Often, parents expose children to screens right from a young age — using videos to get toddlers to eat without a fuss is a common parenting method. This can lead to several behavioural problems.

Schools should also keep this in mind while creating online content for younger kids. The lessons should be designed in such a way that the child only spends a few minutes looking at a screen. This can be done by integrating different activities into the lessons.

Way Forward:

Early Childhood Association have suggested that during pandemics, schools can be opened in a staggered manner, with 50% students attending every alternate day .

This will help avoid crowded classrooms and give schools time to clean up their premises.

Temperature checks of teachers, students and non-teaching staff should become mandatory.

Teachers should not give students any books to carry home. Social distancing should be followed strictly by teachers and students.

Second, it will be better to give priority to opening schools for marginalised and migrant children , as they might not have access to technology . We can create separate safe spaces for these children.

Online Education: Pros and Cons Essay

Online education has recently taken its place in modern society and no one could deny that it is a rather important part of any educational system of today. Nevertheless, the use of online study still arises a lot of controversial points of view because some people support the method of online education and give their arguments, while other people oppose this method and give their own arguments that are not less trustworthy.

Our aim here is to consider both points of view in order to find out the answer to the following questions: “Can the online education provide the same level of knowledge that usual college education provides?” and “What are the main points that evidence for and against online education?” In order to answer these questions, we going to consider the arguments of both sides of the issue and make the essay more specific with the help of certain examples to support both points of view.

The supporters of online education, which is also widely known as distance learning, support their point of view by saying that online education allows a larger number of people to get a higher education degree. Besides, they say that a person does not always need a teacher to learn something, i. e. one can not be taught, he or she can only teach themselves. Concerning the first argument of the supporters of online education, it is quite trustful.

For example, this method of studying allows people who are employed or have families to study in higher educational establishments. They do not need to be physically present at all classes and study full-time. With the help of online education, they can plan their study themselves, taking into consideration their working schedule, family needs, and amount of spare time.

As for the second argument of this side, it is also good because people study themselves depending only upon their wish, and no teacher can make them study (Deane, 2005, pp. 34 – 54).

On the contrary, the opponents of distance learning, state that every student needs a teacher who would guide his or her studying process. They say that a person can learn the material her/himself but there is no guarantee that he or she learn it correctly. That is why a teacher is necessary to check the knowledge of a student and guide them in the right direction.

Another argument that the opponents of online education put forward is that it is accessible not to all people. They exemplify their point of view saying that poor people do not always have access to the Internet and that makes it difficult for them to take up distance education. What is more important is that people with physical or mental disabilities also not always can take up the online course because of the complexity of its application.

For example, a person with certain local losses of memory can not use very sophisticated systems of application the online study programs and due to this, the distance learning becomes inaccessible for him or her (Deane, 2005, pp. 56 — 75).

To express my personal opinion concerning the issue of online education, I should say that I support this method of education. I believe that it presents a wide range of options for people who do not have time for usual study due to work they have or families that they must feed. Besides, online education allows people from abroad to study in any educational establishment they wish without expenses on moving to that country and living costs there.

As for the drawbacks of online education for people with disabilities, I agree that such a problem exists and I am convinced that it can be solved. One of the ways to solve it is for the educational establishments to simplify the application of distance learning programs.

• 55,000 villages in the country are without mobile network coverage as per Niti Aayog, in its “Strategy for New India@75” report
• Proper Infrastructure: Personal computers and phones unequal to professional work
• Lack of Experience : Both teachers and students fall back on the communications grammar of the live classroom which produces confusion online. 
• Lack of Capabilities: Both teachers and students need training in how to operate in the electronic classroom, and how to deal with digital workflows.
• Increased burden : Parents have to bear the burden of keeping electronic classrooms in order

• A large number of students are not comfortable with spoken or written English. This makes online pedagogical material that much inaccessible
• The students come with different levels of prior training, which makes it difficult to have a one-size-fits-all approach with online teaching.

In COVID-19 situation, 500 million students have been affected. All schools and colleges have been shut down. Online learning has come to the rescue of these students in a virtual world. Does new media actually have better teaching standards when compared to classroom education?  This indeed has become a debatable topic over the past few months as every single thing has its own pros and cons, similarly online learning has its pros and cons.

Drawbacks of online learning

No face to face interaction: .

It’s often possible that we misinterpret what we actually see or read when we do not find somebody to actually explain it out to us. A single punctuation error changes the real meaning of the entire sentence and as it is said half and the improper information is even more harmful than no information. Hence, face to face interaction is very important for proper learning.

No regularity or discipline: 

As the students are free from the regulations and boundaries of a proper classroom environment, it is quite obvious that the curriculum will not be maintained the way it should be. They might not study the materials in a routine manner and may start taking things lightly. There are high chances that the students might get distracted while learning online. 

No time commitment: 

Since there is no one to inspect them studying they might just not complete their work and leave it unfinished further harming their own selves in the long run.

Higher dropout rate: 

Students are more likely to drop out as they are not giving their full commitment to their studies and take their studies too lightly. There will not be any particular mentor for the students to keep a track record on their progress and solve their doubts effectively. At places, where online education is difficult to reach, they might just drop out of the schools. 

Technological challenges:

Online learning is helpful to only those students who have access to a proper internet connection and have devices such as laptop and computers. Students without it cannot rely on online learning.

Advantages of online learning

Flexibility :.

The main advantage of online education is its flexibility. A student can adjust his study timings as per his own needs. One can study indoor or outdoor, in a room or while travelling in a metro. It also saves time, energy or money of travelling to a specific destination to attain knowledge.

Cost-efficient:

Online education not only saves time and energy but also money. Education has mostly become a business in educational institutions these days be it coaching, schools or colleges, everyone is just trying to extract more and more money in the name of donations etc. Online education saves students from falling prey to such fraudulent practices. All one needs to do is have an internet connection in their system.

Wider choice of courses and subjects:

In online education, one is free to choose his own combination of subjects regardless of the percentage required for taking up that particular subject. One can even take up odd combinations such as science with psychology or commerce with mass communication fearless of the fact that someone might judge them for their choices.

No language barriers:

Since online education is available in most of the vernacular languages, there are no language barriers. One is free to learn new things in their own mother tongue as well. They are not bound to understand a particular language in order to follow the text, they can read the text or see a video related to it in whichever language they please, this gives them self-pride and confidence in themselves.

Underused data:

If a student does not has the time to take down notes while studying online, he can always save the page or convert it into a document and download it. Unlike in traditional classrooms where the matter gets erased from the board once the teacher is finished teaching, one can always refer to what he or she has studied previously online by simply clicking on the history of the site.

As we are aware of the World Pandemic of Coronavirus, the demand for online learning has surged up. Many institutions who have proper resources have gone online to take classes. But in a country like India, where internet connection is not available everywhere, not everyone is benefited with such resources so that they can go digital. There are many students who do not have a laptop, internet connection and money to even buy that. It totally depends on one's personal opinion as to what is more convenient for him/her- the old traditional teaching or the new online education whoever is having a choice between both. But our country is not yet ready to turn fully digital. Online teaching is definitely a boon and can be an add-on to traditional teaching but it cannot replace it.
