People of any age group can get education anytime and anywhere, education has no limitations if you want to have it you can get it anytime and from anywhere. When you talk about education it not only makes you a self-dependent person but it is going to cultivate such values in you that will help you to be a respected person in society.

Today I am going to speak about the Importance of Education. Education plays a key role in the development of an individual. When we think of education, the first thing that strikes our minds is gaining knowledge. Education not only provides an individual with Education is a tool that provides knowledge, skill sets, techniques, and information to people, allowing them to understand their rights and duties to their family, society, and nation. It enhances vision and perspective to see the world. Not only this but it is also the most significant element in the nation's evolution. One will not explore innovative ideas without education. It implies that one can not develop the world as there is no creativity without ideas and there is no development of a nation without creativity.

There are certain ways in which you can teach the students and small children about the importance that education holds. Following are some important ways that you need to follow while teaching the students about the importance of education.

Since we all know that children tend to observe whatever is happening around them, you need to focus on being their role model, if you want them to learn something important like education.

Education can empower individuals in various ways. It helps in eradicating poverty, as it makes an individual capable of getting a job and fulfilling all the basic needs and requirements of the family.  A well-educated person is not easily fooled and is less likely to be involved in social evils. It makes them less susceptible to cheating and getting involved in crime. An increase in educated people ultimately boosts the trade and commerce of a country. It provides the citizens with a deeper understanding of law and order and they are more likely to become law-abiding citizens, as they understand the importance of law and order. Education helps in fighting several societal evils; it demolishes certain sexist customs of child marriage, the Dowry system, Sati Pratha, and also encourages women to become independent.

Education empowers women to stand up for themselves and voice their opinions. A good education adds to the communication skills of a person and helps them express themselves more effectively. We are regarded as a valuable source of knowledge for our society as educated individuals. Education helps us to teach necessary morals, good manners, and wise ethics to others. As well as being good at the physical, mental and social level,besides, it promotes the feeling of living a better life. A good education is constructive, which creates our future. This allows an individual to enhance his mental, physical and spiritual level. By offering knowledge of many areas, it makes us confident individuals. It's enough to say that education matters. Studies show that those educated are more likely to live longer, live healthier lives, and help strangers more.

While children are young, investing in different types of education ensures that they have a strong foundation. Good education is intended not only to get hard work and good results but to accomplish new things for the welfare of the whole human race. Not only does education allow us to study history, science, mathematics, geography, and other subjects, but it also teaches us how to deal with life's bad situations. Therefore, education is essential for a better future. Education not only means getting bookish knowledge but it involves you having knowledge that will help you to evolve as a better human and the one who can protect society from all the evils.

Today, I am here to share my views on the importance of education. Education among uneducated and poor people is still an issue in this modern, technologically advanced world that urgently needs to be addressed. People's education is a solution to all social, personal, and business issues. To live in society, proper and higher education makes us more civilized. 

Besides, it is very well known that education often generates self-confidence. To have self-confidence, which leads to many positive effects and success in life, is a great blessing for us. It enables us, for instance, to handle specific tasks, to tackle the challenges of life, and to maintain positive positions. Education also directs the individual's undeveloped capabilities, attitudes, interests, impulses, and needs into desirable channels. With the aid of education, the individual can change and modify his environment according to his needs. There are two aspects to man—biological and social. Education not only maintains and transmits the social aspect of mankind but also provides you with knowledge about the biological aspects.

In addition to preserving and transmitting social elements from generation to generation, education also contributes to the enrichment of culture. Our Constitution provides for free and compulsory education, the right of minorities to set up and administer educational institutions, education for weaker sectors, secular education, education for women, primary education in the mother tongue, preservation of national heritage, education in the Union Territories, etc. These constitutional provisions are nothing but our attempt to attain the objective 'Education for All'. Having the right education will help you to be a good human and also enable you to understand how to survive in our society and tackle all the difficulties in our way easily. Whenever we talk about education we know that we are talking about the growth of an individual as a whole. Education is the basic necessity that everyone should have. It helps you to grow mentally and will enable you to be a better human being.

You only can use these technologies when you are having a better education and knowledge about these technologies.

Whatever we learn from our parents and teachers stays throughout life with us and we pass it on to our next generation.

Our goal of getting an education should be to help other people in society who are needed to get over their vulnerabilities and superstitions. We have often observed that lower sections of society are still so much into superstitions but if they are educated in the right way then only they can overcome such superstitions and can lead a better life.

By maintaining the balance between body, mind, and soul, keeps our mind calm and peaceful.

The Constitution (Eighty-sixth Amendment) Act, 2002 inserted Article 21-A in the Constitution of India for “the right to education” to provide “free and compulsory education of all children in the age group of six to fourteen years as a fundamental Right”.

First of all, good morning to the honourable principal, respected teachers and loving friends and all of you present here today. In your special presence, I would like to say a few words about the right to education.

People use many tools and devices in their homes. When they purchase these products, a user manual is also supplied in the box. This user manual is a guide on how to efficiently use the product. Hence, this user manual is the right for the customer.

Similarly, in human life, education acts like a user manual and is a right for humans. It guides them to efficiently use their body and mind to achieve the optimum level of living satisfaction.

Not only does it help us in efficiently use our body and brain but it also creates a distinction between other living beings and the human race. Just think if a person lives a life like any other living being, then what is the purpose of having the most incredible intelligence compared to any other species?

Human intelligence carries the power to destroy the entire planet as well as the power to transform the planet into a heaven-like place. Which is better between these two? Of course, everyone will opt for the second. It can only be done by supplying education to each and every human.

Understanding the fact, the Constitution (Eighty-sixth Amendment) Act, 2002 inserted Article 21-A in the Constitution of India for “the right to education”.

This aims to provide “free and compulsory education of all children in the age group of six to fourteen years as a fundamental Right”. As a result, the literacy rate of the country will increase. Moreover, it will also fill the gap between poverty and prosperity.

Nelson Mandela correctly said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. We can build better societies to live in by educating each and every human being. Better societies make a better country and better countries will make a better world.

To sum it up, education is a fundament right for everyone and it should be free. The right to education act promises to provide “free and compulsory education of all children in the age group of six to fourteen years as a fundamental Right”. We can say that it is a step towards changing the world.

These words by Nelson Mandela pretty much sum up the importance of education in the life of human beings. Without education, human beings wouldn’t have arrived at the stage they are right now, and it is unlikely that we will be able to continue our missions to space progressively without education. 

And yet the truth remains that many, many people across the world do not have the right or ability to receive an education. Many of these people might be able to do great things if only they had the means to do so.

In such a scenario, it becomes important to spread awareness about education. Delivering speeches is one of the best ways to do so, as through speeches one can make a more personal connection with the people attending & make it more likely that they will actually do something about it.

However, it’s also true that education is a topic that many, many people have spoken about. In such a scenario, you might find yourself wondering what you can do to make your speech stand apart from all the ones that came before.

So, find a unique angle for the speech. Draw on your personal experiences and ask yourself: is there anything about this topic that I can see but others can’t?

2. Include Concrete Elements 

Concrete details or elements include things like facts, statistics, etc. 

If you don’t include concrete elements in your speech, then chances are that your speech will become abstract and hard to believe really fast.

So, make sure to back up your arguments with relevant information.

3. Use Language & Concepts Familiar To The Audience

Often, speakers have this misconception that the bigger or more difficult words they use, the better or smarter they’re going to sound. This cannot be further from the truth.

While using complicated words or concepts might make you sound smarter, they also increase the chances that you won’t be able to formulate a connection with the audience. 

After all, if they can’t understand what they’re saying, how will they connect with it?

4. Incorporate Storytelling & Props 

Stories are a GREAT way to make your speech more personal and engaging. And props, if used alongside your story, can take it to the next level. 

So, make sure to incorporate appropriate personal stories and props in your speech. Make sure that your prop is relevant to the speech, and not merely an accessory. 

5. Make Them Feel, Not Just Hear 

If you truly want your audience to be impacted by your speech, then you need to make them feel more deeply about it. You need to make them go beyond hearing and actually feel for you and the topic. 

This can be done by sprinkling throughout your speech elements like humor, stories, props, videos, real-life testimonials, interacting with them…

The list goes on. 

What matters is going above and beyond. You want to make your words mean more than their meaning. 

6. Use Humor

Humor is a great way to take any speech to the next level. Like stories, jokes are a great way to form a connection with the audience and make your speech more memorable.

However, one thing to keep in mind here is to make sure that your humor is relevant to the topic at hand. Don’t just add jokes for the sake of adding them: make sure that they relate to your speech in some way.

7. Don’t Have Too Many Points

While it’s important to make sure that your speech covers all aspects that it needs to cover, you don’t have to include too many points in your speech. This will make it difficult for the audience to figure out what, exactly, is the central theme or main message that you want them to take away.

You can have one or two key takeaways and divide those main points into multiple individual points. This will allow for better structure of your speech, whilst also making it easier to view it from multiple angles.

Ways To Begin Your Speech On Education 

1. Open With A Story 

This is a tried and tested way to open your speech. As mentioned before, it’s imperative you incorporate stories into your speech if you wish to make a personal connection with the audience and make them feel for your speech.

2. Make Them Go ‘A-Ha’ 

Another awesome way to open your speech is by surprising your audience. This will awaken them, and snap their attention to where it needs to be: on you. 

This adds doubly to your credit if your speech is on a seemingly monotonous topic like education where the audience enters with certain expectations about the speech already in place. 

There are many ways to do this. Stories with a twist are one. Another would be incorporating a joke. Yet another way would be to pull out a prop. Or you could even say a surprising statement that seems to go against the topic when you first hear it.

3. Common-Ground Open 

A common ground opening is imperative if there is a gap between you and your audience. If, for example, you’re an aged professor from a reputed university and the audience is teenagers from a local high school, then there are going to be gaps in how you and the audience perceive the world. 

You can bridge this gap in a couple of ways. One would be making a personal connection or making them see that you are similar in certain aspects. This can be done by using humor, incorporating stories, or even making a pop culture reference. You can also open with a shared goal or interest. 

For example:  When I was in high school, all I wanted to do was get out of it.

4. Open With A Show Of Hands 

Another great way to open your speech is by asking questions–particularly show of hands questions. 

This works in two ways: asking the question piques your audience’s attention and gets their thoughts rolling. On the other hand, show-of-hands provides them with a chance to move their body, which aids in making them more aware of their surroundings i.e you. 

For example:  How many of you wish you could get out of this classroom right now?

5. Open With An Image Or Prop 

Images tell stories. And stories, as mentioned above, are one of the best ways to open your speech. 

You can open your speech by showing the audience an image of something and then asking them a question about it or presenting a startling fact about it. Alternatively, you could also open your speech by employing a relevant prop.

Sample Speech On Education

Title: The Missing Ramp

On a school field trip in grade 3, I met my long lost twin. Or so I thought, anyway. The boy I met wasn’t actually my twin by blood. But he was my exact replica in every other aspect: from the color of our hair and eyes to the kind of jokes we liked to make and the cartoons we loved to watch and the fact that we both felt a little out of place in the big strange world. We were similar in more aspects than we could count, more than I can remember now. However, we were significantly different in one important aspect: While I was a ten year old, happy-go-lucky kid that hated going to school, he was a ten year old, happy go-lucky kid for whom school was a distant dream. You see, Andrew–the boy I thought was my twin–had a locomotor disability. He had to use a weelchair to be able to move around. However, there was only one school in our little town, and the school had no ramps or elevators, making it impossible for him to navigate by himself the five floors that it comprised. Not only this, but there were no washrooms available for him, either. His mother could not afford to lose her job in town, not with the already soaring cost of his treatement. Her meagre salary meant that a private tutor was out of question. Besides, she thought, what was the point of uprooting her entire life to move to another town or city when–according to her–there was no point in educating her child when he could not do anything with it? And so, despite the fact that he was perfectly capable of learning at par with the rest of us, Andrew never got an education. Imagine that. Imagine being unable to go to school when all the other kids around you are doing so because the school does not have a ramp. It sounds absurd, right? However strange or unreal it may sound, it’s the reality of the lives of many, many children with disabilities. It’s not that they’re unwilling to learn or their parents are unwilling to send them to school. It’s the lack of facilities–many of which the rest of us take for granted–which make it impossible for them to attend school. And even when the facilities are available. Even then, many, many children with disabilites are unable to achieve the education that is their basic right. An estimated one in three out-of-school children have a disability. There are between 93 million and 150 million children with disabilities worldwide. And yet, WHO estimates that in many, many countries across the world, having a disability more than doubles the chances of a child never attending school. While accessibility remains the key factor that inhibits children with disabilities from attending school, there are many, many other factors that come into play. Inflexible teacher training & support is another factor that comes into play. As does inflexible curriculum and poor structure and plan. However, another key factor that prevents children with disabilites from attending school has less to do with the physical elements of education, and more with the mindset and mentality of other people. That is, it has to do with the attitude of children and teachers in school towards children with disabilites. Often, children with disabilites are scorned and made fun of by their peers. And this is not limited to students alone. The teachers, too, might share a callous attitiude and be inflexible in their approach. I had a teacher in my school who refused to change her ‘ alphabetical seating plan’ to allow a deaf girl sit in the first bench so that she could lip-read her instructions. What this means is that many times, the children themseleves might not be willing to go to school from the fear of how their peers and teachers might react to or treat them. While delivering speeches about making education accessible to all or how it is the fundamental right of every person, we tend to make grand statements and all the big steps that we need to–or should–take in order to actually make education more accessible to people. And yet, while making all those grandoise proclamations, we often overlook the little steps that each and every single one of us needs to take. In seeing the ‘big picture’, we ignore the all the little snapshots that go into making it. And yet, it is this little things that make the most difference. A missing ramp–that’s all it took to make a child miss out on his dream of going to school. I don’t think any words sum up my words better than something Annie Campbell said: “We can teach our children to flap their wings, but conditions have to be just right for them to fly.” Our children are ready to take the leap and fly. Now it is upon us to determine what the sky will be like: full or rain or brimming with sunshine.

Good morning fellow students, teachers, and other faculty members. Today, I am standing before you to present a speech on education. 

We all know that education is the magic pill to personal and professional success. To acknowledge the significance of education in our lives, let us first understand the definition of education. Education is learning new things, unlearning wrong information, and exploring the world around us. Therefore, it is a guiding light that helps us become better versions of ourselves.

Our learning process begins at home with our parents and family members. Then we enter the formal education system in school. Our school is the most significant place where the magic of education happens. In our school, our teachers are like magicians who guide us through the wonders of learning. They help us understand numbers, explore words, unearth history, experiment with the mysteries of science, and explore the world around us. 

Knowing how pivotal education is important for us, we cannot imagine a world without education. If there is no learning in our lives, we will not be able to read, write, or communicate effectively. Thus, we can safely say that education arms us with the power to share ideas, understand society, and express ourselves. Thus, it helps us to become good citizens who contribute to our country’s growth.

Also, education helps us become kind and respect others. It also encourages us to become effective team members. These values shape us into empathetic and responsible humans. As we learn, we not only gain knowledge but also develop the skills to face the world with confidence.

We must remember that education is a privilege. Therefore, we must make the most of it. So, let us appreciate our educational institutions, teachers, and learning opportunities. Therefore, we must embrace all the possibilities that education opens for us.  

With this, I come to the end of my speech. I thank you all for listening and being patient.

What the First Amendment Means for Campus Protests

Encampments? Occupying buildings? Demonstrators cite their right to free expression, but the issues are thorny.

Protesters on college campuses have often cited the First Amendment as shelter for their tactics, whether they were simply waving signs or taking more dramatic steps, like setting up encampments, occupying buildings or chanting slogans that critics say are antisemitic.

But many legal scholars, along with university lawyers and administrators, believe at least some of those free-speech assertions muddle, misstate, test or even flout the amendment, which is meant to guard against state suppression.

Whose interpretation and principles prevail, whether in the courts or among the administrators in charge of meting out discipline, will do much to determine whether protesters face punishments for campus turmoil.

The First Amendment doesn’t automatically apply at private schools.

Public universities, as arms of government, must yield to the First Amendment and how the courts interpret its decree that there shall be no law “abridging the freedom of speech” or “the right of the people peaceably to assemble.”

But private universities set their own standards around speech and protest.

To be sure, private universities tend to embrace free expression more than, say, private businesses. Those policies and approaches, though, are driven by principles like academic freedom and the marketplace of ideas, not constitutional law.

Columbia University, a hub through this round of campus protests and the scene of an enormous police response on Tuesday night, has not forbidden all speech. But its current policy includes a set of rules, such as permissible demonstration zones and preregistration of protests, that the university says are intended to ensure safety while promising that “all members of the university community have the right to speak, study, research, teach and express their own views.”

Legal scholars have said that while the university’s approach may anger students and faculty members, and may even curtail speech on campus, Columbia faces far less legal risk than any public school might.

‘Time, place and manner’ is a crucial standard.

Academic administrators and the courts alike often find comfort in frameworks, and the notion of “time, place and manner” is deeply embedded in case law involving free speech.

Under that doctrine, governments may sometimes regulate logistical details associated with speech. The doctrine is not a blank check for state power over speech — a government must, for example, apply regulations without discriminating against a viewpoint — but it allows for some restrictions in the pursuit of public safety and order.

For university leaders, the doctrine offers a template of sorts for protest policies that can survive legal scrutiny and withstand political backlashes.

“We always thought that time, place, manner — if applied in a fair, open and completely neutral way — was the best mechanism to both allow protest and also to ensure that protest didn’t disrupt academic programming and activities,” said Nicholas B. Dirks, a former chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, which has one of the richest traditions of protest in higher education.

But, Dr. Dirks added, “That’s easier said than done.”

Another important test is ‘imminent lawless action.’

The Supreme Court, soon after World War I, delivered a First Amendment ruling that included the phrase “clear and present danger.” About 50 years later, the court adopted an approach focused on “imminent lawless action.”

That test is important in gauging whether, for example, the First Amendment protects an antisemitic chant. If the rhetoric is intended to provoke an “imminent lawless action” and is likely to do so, it is not considered constitutionally sound. But a chant that fails any part of that standard is protected, meaning that even some grotesquely uncomfortable, distasteful speech may not be subject to discipline by the government.

“The tricky part is when the conduct and the speech are close to the line,” said Timothy J. Heaphy, who was a United States attorney during the Obama administration and later the university counsel at the University of Virginia.

Some threatening behavior on campuses is illegal under federal civil rights law. Two men, for instance, pleaded guilty to using a threat of force to intimidate Black students and employees at the University of Mississippi after they placed a noose around a campus statue of James Meredith, the first Black student to enroll there, in 2014. One of the men was sentenced to prison.

Are encampments covered by the First Amendment?

Although some campus protesters consider their encampments to be a form of speech, the courts have held that restrictions on overnight camping and the like can meet the time, place and manner test, even on public property.

In a 7-2 ruling in 1984, for instance, the Supreme Court ruled that the National Park Service could refuse a request for protesters to spend nights in “symbolic tents” near the White House under its regulations against sleeping in places that were not classified as campgrounds.

“The regulation forbidding sleeping meets the requirements for a reasonable time, place, or manner restriction of expression,” Justice Byron White wrote in his opinion.

“The regulation is neutral with regard to the message presented, and leaves open ample alternative methods of communicating the intended message concerning the plight of the homeless,” he added.

A court would never see a building occupation like the one this week at Columbia, Mr. Heaphy predicted, as a protected First Amendment activity.

“Students occupied the building,” he said. “That’s conduct. That’s not going to last.”

Can universities change policies?

Generally, yes, but, for public universities, the First Amendment still applies.

Again, private universities have more discretion.

At the University of Chicago, the president, Paul Alivisatos, noted this week that while encampments violate school rules, administrators “may allow an encampment to remain for a short time despite the obvious violations of policy.”

Floating that possibility, he cited “the importance of the expressive rights of our students” and said that “the impact of a modest encampment does not differ so much from a conventional rally or march.”

But he signaled the university would not allow its policy to be eviscerated, and he urged students involved with the encampment “to instead embrace the multitude of other tools at their disposal.”

Suella Braverman wrote in the Daily Telegraph about her party that "the hole to dig us out is the PM’s, and it’s time for him to start shovelling".

She also called for the party to take a stance further to the right of where it is now.

Tobias Ellwood - a Tory MP who is much more on the One Nation side of the party - has now called for her to get on board with the PM and help his election efforts.

SNP leadership hopeful John Swinney has warned rivals against entering the contest, saying it would "delay the ability for the [party] to start its rebuilding".

The former deputy leader is currently the only candidate in the running to replace Humza Yousaf, who announced last week he would be stepping down as first minister after his decision to end a power-sharing agreement with the Scottish Green Party led to the collapse of his premiership.

But rumours have surfaced today that SNP activist Graeme McCormick has gathered enough support to launch his own bid for the top job, and if he submits an application before Monday's midday deadline, the party would begin a three-week leadership contest.

Speaking to Sky News' Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, Mr Swinney accepted there was a "democratic process" for any candidate with 100 signatures from 20 local SNP organisations to enter the race.

However, in what appeared to be a warning to any potential rival, he added: "My bid to become SNP leader has received very, very comprehensive support within the SNP. I have sent out a message which is about unifying the SNP to strengthen our party and win Scottish independence.

"I think that is necessary as the SNP is not as cohesive today as the party needs to be, and my campaign has attracted very wide support."

George Galloway, the leader of the Workers Party of Britain and Rochdale MP, ended an interview with LBC this morning when asked about comments he previously made about gay relationships.

Speaking to Novara Media previously, Mr Galloway said: "I don't want my children prematurely sexualised at all, I don't want them taught that some things are normal when their parents don't believe that they're normal.

"Now there's lots of things not normal, doesn't mean you have to hate something that isn't normal. But if my children are taught that there's – whatever the current vogue number is – 76 or 97 or whatever the number of purported genders that exist, I don't want my children taught that."

He added that he did not want children to be taught "that gay relationships are exactly the same and as normal as a mum, a dad and kids".

"I want my children to be taught that the normal thing in Britain, in society across the world, is a mother, a father and a family.

"I want them to be taught that there are gay people in the world and that they must be treated with respect and affection, as I treat my own gay friends and colleagues with respect and affection but I don't want my children to be taught that these things are equal because I don't believe them to be equal."

Asked about the comments by LBC, Mr Galloway claimed the station was "ambushing" him - and that they had shown a "clip of a clip" that was "edited".

On its website, LBC said: "The clip played was shortened, though a longer clip was then played."

The world's second-largest steel company has warned the government that a planning verdict due this week could lead to a key division quitting the UK.

Sky News has seen a letter sent by ArcelorMittal to Michael Gove, the levelling-up secretary, in which it says that a decision to allow the closure and redevelopment of part of Chatham Docks would have "seismic adverse consequences… [for] the British economy and multiple strategic industries".

In the letter from Matthew Brooks, who runs ArcelorMittal's construction solutions arm in the UK, the company urges Mr Gove to issue an urgent order to allow fuller government scrutiny of the redevelopment proposals ahead of Wednesday's decision by Medway Council.

"This is highly time-sensitive - calling in the application after next Wednesday will not be possible," Mr Brooks wrote.

He warned that if the proposals were approved, ArcelorMittal would "regrettably be left with no alternative but to leave Chatham Docks and, more than likely, cease operations in Britain, given the lack of suitable alternative sites".

Yolande Makolo, the spokesperson for the Rwandan government, was speaking to the BBC this morning.

She was asked if the central African nation was able to take the tens of thousands of people the UK government is aiming to send abroad.

Ms Makolo said: "We will be able to welcome the migrants that the UK sends over the lifetime of this partnership.

"What I cannot tell you is how many thousands we are taking in the first year or the second year. This will depend on very many factors that are being worked out right now."

But she rubbished reports Rwanda was only able to take 200 people.

Responding to Ms Makolo's comments, Labour's shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said: "This interview shows that more people have arrived in the last week than are likely to be sent to Rwanda over the next few years, and the Conservatives are just trying to con people with their failing plans. 

"Today we heard a stark admission that Rwanda can only take a tiny proportion of people who are arriving in the UK, yet the government is spending half a billion pounds of taxpayers' money on this scheme.

"At the same time the government is letting the backlog go back up and failing to process removals to safe home countries so the costs to the taxpayer will go up even further."

The last of the 107 English councils has declared its winner - with Labour holding Salford.

The net result is that Labour gained one seat and the Conservatives lost one - although this does not mean there were not other swaps.

It means that, in total, the Conservatives are down 474 seats, while Labour is up 186, the Lib Dems up 104, the Greens up 74, and other parties up 100.

Labour gained eight councils, the Lib Dems gained won, three went to no overall control or another party, and the Conservatives lost 12.

This does not include the mayoral races, of which the Tories won only one - Tees Valley.

In totality (there were lots of seats not up for election this time round) Labour now control 51 of the 107 councils, the Lib Dems 12, Conservatives six and independents one, with 37 under no overall control.

Some 255 people crossed the Channel in small boats yesterday, according to the government - in five boats.

But the Home Office has now added more data to the chart they publish -  including "migrants prevented" and "events prevented".

Yesterday, the Home Office says 104 people were stopped in six events.

According to the government, this equates to "individuals who are prevented from departing France, or those who return to France", and also "finds of general maritime equipment".

This information comes from a "snapshot" from the French authorities, and has not been verified - with the Home Office saying it is "inherently likely to be subject to a relatively high degree of measurement error".

The department also states that arrivals and preventions are not comparable. 

Speaking to Trevor Phillips this morning, Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the government's plan is "to stick to focusing on the priorities that the prime minister set out, which are the government's priorities, the Prime Minister's priorities but they're also the priorities of the British people".

But the Liberal Democrats say the Conservatives are in "complete denial".

The party's deputy leader, Daisy Cooper, said: "Mark Harper's claim that their 'plan' is working shows the Conservatives are living in cloud cuckoo land.

"Voters across the country turned to the Liberal Democrats in these local elections as we beat the Conservatives and pushed them into third place.

"Rishi Sunak needs to stop running scared of the British people and call a general election. Every day he clings on to power just does more damage to the NHS and people's living standards."

Robert Largan is the MP for High Peak, in Derbyshire, and falls under the boundaries of freshly minted Labour mayor for the East Midlands Claire Ward.

He is also under the Labour police and crime commissioner Nicolle Ndiweni.

Posting on social media, Mr Largan says: "Congratulations to Claire Ward, the new East Midlands Mayor, and to Nicolle Ndiweni, the new Derbyshire Police & Crime Commissioner.

"I sincerely wish them both the best of luck in their roles. I will do my best to work with them, on a cross-party basis, to deliver for Derbyshire."

4 Minute Speech on Education In English

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of ‘Education’.

Wikipedia defines the term ‘education’ to be “a purposeful activity directed at achieving certain aims, such as transmitting knowledge or fostering skills and character traits. These aims may include the development of understanding, rationality, kindness, and honesty.”

Education, as the above-given definition, must thus not only be confined to mere theoretical knowledge as it is often misinterpreted to be. It should rather be a holistic process which aims to hone one to become a qualified individual as one grows up into adulthood.

The process of acquiring a basic level of knowledge like this through schooling is crucial for everyone as they grow up from children to adults. Moreover, it teaches one integral values in life and helps build character and become financially independent at a later stage.

Realising the importance of education, the Constitution (Eighty-sixth Amendment) Act, 2002 inserted Article 21-A in the Constitution of India to provide free and compulsory education of all children in the age group of six to fourteen years as a Fundamental Right in such a manner as the State may, by law, determine. It also implemented The Right to Education Act of India which further decreed that private schools must reserve 25% of the seats for underprivileged children. 

Today, however, the aim of education does not have anything to do with knowledge. Rather, it has morphed into a rat race!

Being academically proficient and receiving straight As is of prime importance nowadays. Rather than understanding new concepts and learning meaningfully from them, what matters now is blindly memorizing the syllabus for the sake of ‘scoring good grades’ and writing answers that would appease the examiner with appropriate ‘keywords’!

The education system as a whole needs to be revised thus. The aim of education must shift from receiving good grades to learning knowledge and learning through a more hands-on approach. Practical skills must be given more importance thus rather than education turning into a bloodthirsty battle for marks!

Workers and students in UK continue to protest Gaza genocide

Thousands of people turned out across the UK to demonstrate against the Gaza genocide again this weekend. Socialist Equality Party members attended the rallies and spoke with some of those taking part.

At the rally in Inverness, Socialist Equality Party member Darren gave a speech advertising the international May Day rally organised by the World Socialist Web Site for that evening and drawing the connection with the fight to stop the genocide in Gaza.

Student and artist Jessica also delivered a speech at the rally, saying, “I’s so necessary for students to respond to the genocide.

“Look at the treatment of students in the US. They’ve been assaulted by US police officers who work with and are trained by Israel. I think the lesson to learn from this is that the students in the US and around the world will be treated the same way as the Palestinians. It’s only been a month of the encampments and students have been beaten, tear-gassed, assaulted. We’ve seen women with their clothes ripped off, with their hijabs ripped off.

“It just proves that the deeper we sink into the crisis of capitalism, the more danger we are all in. None of us are safe from this. Capitalism is like a disease; its crisis doesn’t stay isolated to one part of the body, this won’t stay isolated in the Middle East.

She warned, “If the resistance to Israeli colonisation is crushed and they establish Israel all over the land they wont just stop there; they’ve already started striking Lebanon, Syria and Iran. The question is where does it end? With capitalism it (the drive to war) doesn’t end. The end starts with us.”

Jessica described Zionism as “a modern expression of fascism and the love child of US imperialism and the British Empire,” adding, “They are weaponizing antisemitism. They are taking something that has so much historical pain attached to it that you can’t argue with it and twisting its meaning for their own benefit.

She noted that “The people this hurts the most aren’t just the Palestinians but Jews too. Since October 7th they’ve used the term antisemitism so much that they are determined for the word to lose all meaning.”

Asked by Socialist Equality Party members if the conclusion to be drawn from her comments was that it was necessary for workers and students to struggle for socialism, Jessica replied, “Yes, one hundred percent! And if its an issue that you don’t think effects you, that it’s just a question for the Middle East, then have a look how much your food shop has gone up this week. How much have your bills risen? It all ties in.”

Around 1,000 pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched from St Peter’s Square in Manchester down Oxford road to join a student encampment in Brunswick Square, in the grounds of the University of Manchester.

Stewards joined hands to protect the demonstrators from a handful of Zionist supporters, who shouted abuse as the disciplined marchers, many with young children and babies in buggies, passed by.

The encampment was set up on Wednesday despite intimidation from the University authorities, who declared it “wholly unauthorised”.

Each student taking part received a letter May 3 which said, “We have received a number of reports and complaints from people around the encampment and via social media regarding chanting at the protest that has caused much distress, specifically the phrase ‘from Manchester to Gaza, globalise the intifada’ which is regarded as discriminatory.

“It is important for you to know that such chanting has been reported to Manchester police.”

Speaking about the violence and intimidation meted out to students who have set up protest camps across the US, law student Nasreem said, “The violence of the police when it comes to acting against the students who are protesting and at the guys at the encampment just shows that the whole thing of freedom of speech and political dissent is non-existent really; if you don’t stand with the US and their geopolitical interests, they’ll treat you as disposable, they’ll treat you as not worth protecting.”

Isma , a student at Salford University who was attending her first demonstration, said, “The Israelis and the police say they want peace but are demonstrating the opposite. Everything they say they are standing for is completely contradictory. They promote free speech, but they are not allowing free speech—they are promoting abuse to Palestinian supporters. They are very violent.”

Her friend Hina said the conflict in Gaza was not “Jews versus Muslims. There are Jewish people suffering in Palestine. It’s wrong to say that opposing genocide in Gaza is antisemitic, it doesn’t make sense.

“Labour supports Israel. Whoever supports genocide, we shouldn’t be supporting. If they carry on they’ll drag us into another world war.”

Another student, Brian , who said he was going to join the protest camp, commented regarding the authoritarian methods to clear camps in the US: “It seems a very coordinated attempt to dismiss the movement. It’s Islamophobic. The most maddening thing is it’s Orwellian—to call [Israel] apartheid is not antisemitic.

“We need to bring together forces that can actually oppose this and that has to be the working class. We need a mass movement from below.”

Several protesters gave video interviews, including an organiser of the Palestine Action group leading the encampment:

Another organiser was so enthused by the leaflet “Release Bogdan Syrotiuk, socialist opponent of NATO’s proxy war from Ukrainian prison” they asked to shake the hands of Socialist Equality Party members distributing it and offered to help with its distribution.

He said, “It’s very nice, it’s very refreshing to see an organization that finally is willing to stick its neck out and tell the truth about issues that seem to only have one major storyline. It’s nice to see an organization that’s telling the truth and exposing the Russia-Ukraine conflict. We’re [the West] not always the good guys and the East is not always the bad guys.”

Another student explained, “All forms of injustice and oppression are completely interlinked, and without one being free, we’ll all never be free”:

In Leeds, artist Sunny said, “You have got Leeds University that has been investing in BAE Systems. I think they had someone high up working for the chancellor who had been working closely with students who had quite clear Islamophobic, anti-Palestinian ideas; they should not have been in that role.

“Leeds students have occupied the Parkinson building for quite a while now, they have been having dinners there, learn-ins. For years now there has been a push to get universities to divest [from Israel].”

Sunny continued, “In the UK, since October, millions of people have marched against this. There are a lot of Jews in that community and yet it keeps being labelled as antisemitic behaviour, which has been really damaging for people; some have lost their jobs because of it.”

She added that “If there is a war it will be the working class who will be sent out there.”

Fria , from University College London, explained, “What is happening in Gaza is genocide, thousands are being killed—more than 12,000 children. More are being killed through starvation—no food, no medicines. And the world is watching, everybody can clearly see. It’s not like the First World War or the Second World War: everyone can see it on TV.

He argued, “The Palestinian people have a right to resist. They have a right to stay in their own country.” The Israeli government “with all the powers that they have, they are using them to kill innocent people—those who do that are the terrorists.”

Fria continued, “Workers need to become more powerful; they need to grow in strength to stop the genocide,” adding, “I am sure that if we do not stop it, it will spread to the entire Middle East and then to Africa as well… The workers need to get together. Until we get together, we can’t do anything. Once we get together, we can push them [the governments] to stop the genocide.”
