“Sorry, we're unable to fetch the presentation themes right now”, error

It's already the second day since I can't export to word documents into PowerPoint presentations using Word online. I am continuously getting: “Sorry, we're unable to fetch the presentation themes right now”, error.

Is it on Microsoft side or my side? I have tried all supported browsers (Firefox, Edge, Chrome) and also different desktop and laptop computers, but with no avail.

I would like to know shall I wait, meantime doing, other stuff or the fix will not be any soon?

I realize that you've encountered a problem with   u nable to convert Word document to PowerPoint Presentation using Word Online   and I understand how you feel. 

I just ran a test on your question and did not have the same problem in my test environment, my test steps are: click on the link Login | Microsoft 365 (office.com) and log in to your Microsoft account > create a Word document, enter a first level header, second level header, and body text > click on File > click on Export > click on Export as PowerPoint Presentation.

Therefore, your problem may be specific to an individual account. For the time being I suggest you try a different Microsoft account and perform the same steps to see if you are able to export PowerPoint Presentation properly.

In order to be able to provide you with more appropriate assistance, I kindly suggest that you provide me with specific screenshots of the reported error via private message so that I can better localize the problem.

This problem may also be due to your document settings, I cordially invite you to provide me with the Word file you are having problems with by private message so that I can do further testing. I did... looked that the problem was on the Microsoft side, office for web apps...

different browsers (except Safari that is not compatible)

different account

different PC

different network setting

different ISP provider (I have two providers with two separate lines)

different Word documents (even those documents that worked a couple of days before the error)

therefore, I concluded that it wasn't "me", moreover this morning it worked again as previously with no issues...

At this time, based on your situation, I determine that it may be related to the regional network and the connection between servers. Since your problem is relatively rare, I sincerely invite you to make the following notes:

You mentioned that you sometimes have no problems with this feature, so please make a note of the time period when the feature is available, as sometimes the connection to the server may fluctuate due to peaks in network traffic during different time periods. I realize this will take some time, but in order to find out the cause of the problem, I invite you to join us in documenting and troubleshooting the possibilities.

If you have legitimate VPN software, at this time I would recommend trying to use your VPN software to change your network region to another country or region and then see if the feature works consistently.

As OneDrive has recently been undergoing a UI update as well as a migration, this may have some impact on the servers, and this issue may improve after the OneDrive update is complete.

I have a similar issue. Changed the location using Opera GX's built in VPN feature, connected to NA, that did not help. Different accounts also didn't do the magic.

It seems that the solution hasn't been found yet... a couple of days ago it worked, last night it worked, today it didn't...

So, whatever it is, I'm sure it's not a user related error. Even the error itself seems to say: : "It's not you it's us!" :)

I'm having the same problem, highly frustrating. Tried every combination of computers, browsers, files, etc to no avail. Maybe I'll just wait and see if it magically works tonight since that seems to be the pattern.

Why Disney is doubling down on theme parks with a $60-billion plan

Over the decades since Walt Disney opened his first theme park in 1955, the company’s tourism business has ballooned to an enterprise worth tens of billions in yearly sales, with sprawling locations in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

Today, the Burbank entertainment giant is doubling down once again. Disney plans to invest $60 billion over 10 years into its so-called experiences division, which includes the theme parks, resorts and cruise line, as well as merchandise.

In Anaheim, the city council recently approved an expansion plan at Disneyland Resort, which could lead to at least $1.9 billion of development and involve new attractions alongside hotel, retail and restaurant space.

Why the massive investment? At a time when Disney faces revenue challenges due to cord cutting, streaming wars and a slower film box office, its theme parks are a bright — and reliable — spot for its business. Moreover, they play a major part in the company’s strategy — using well-loved movies to inspire rides and vice versa (think “Pirates of the Caribbean”), feeding an ongoing virtuous cycle.

“When you consider other elements of Disney’s business, those theme parks, they’ve shown themselves to be proven winners,” said Carissa Baker, assistant professor of theme park and attraction management at the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management. “There’s no doubt that they have stayed very competitive in the film space and the TV space, but they’ve always led the theme park sector.”

During the most recent fiscal year, the company’s experiences division — which is heavily anchored by the parks — brought in about 70% of Disney’s operating income, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. By contrast, Disney’s sports sector, including ESPN, contributed 19% of operating income. The entertainment division, consisting of the company’s TV channels, streaming services and movie studios, brought up the rear at 11%.

Those numbers represent a stark contrast from even 10 years ago, when the company was heavily reliant on its TV networks, which brought in 56% of Disney’s operating income (that segment included ESPN at the time). The parks and resorts division drew just 20%.

The tide began to turn in 2019, as the global theme park industry saw record-breaking attendance, just in time for the pandemic to hit the next year.

With the parks closed, Disney reported an operating loss of $81 million in 2020 . Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure, in particular, were shut for 15 months, due to tight restrictions in the Golden State. Since then, pent-up demand from visitors has propelled theme park revenue in a way that hasn’t been replicated in movie theaters.

“The industry was really growing quickly before COVID-19, and that obviously put a crimp on everything,” said Martin Lewison, associate professor of business management at Farmingdale State College in New York. “But it appears as long as the economy remains healthy, the industry is back on track for that growth.”

Theme parks are typically one of the fastest parts of the travel and hospitality industry to recover after economic downturns, said Dennis Speigel, founder and chief executive of consulting firm International Theme Park Services. Part of that is because it’s hard to duplicate the theme park experience at home.

“Disney sets the bar for our entire global theme park industry,” Speigel said. “The guests, the visitors, they love the way Disney immerses you in their storytelling.”

The Disneyland Resort expansion plan, known as DisneylandForward, will help the 490-acre park stay fresh for visitors. The plan calls for changes to the park’s zoning, allowing the company more freedom to mix attractions, theme parks, shopping, dining and parking. While the plan doesn’t specify exactly which attractions will be added to the resort, company officials have floated ideas including immersive Frozen, Tron and Avatar experiences.

Over the years, Disneyland has cycled out many rides and exhibits to make way for new ones — for example, of the original 33 attractions that debuted with the park , only about a dozen still exist. (One that didn’t make it? The Monsanto Hall of Chemistry).

Though Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure have recently seen additions such as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge , Avengers Campus and the renovated Pixar Place Hotel , giving guests new reasons to come back again and again are the key to increased growth. This summer, the Magic Kingdom will open Tiana’s Bayou Adventure , replacing the controversial “Song of the South”-inspired Splash Mountain attraction.

“In the theme parks business, you tend to make more money the more you invest,” said Lewison of Farmingdale State College. “People love riding Haunted Mansion 50 times, but the truth is that even that gets old. So new rides, new lands, new parks — these things draw in attendance, they create pricing power and they add capacity.”

And Disney’s rivals in the theme parks business show no signs of slowing down, meaning Disney can’t just rely on its existing hits. Universal Studios Hollywood recently added Super Nintendo World to its park, SeaWorld is touting new attractions and shows for its 60th anniversary this year, and even immersive art installation company Meow Wolf is expanding throughout the U.S.

The competition is becoming so fierce that Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger faced a pointed question during last month’s shareholder meeting about Walt Disney World’s readiness to vie with a new Universal park set to open in Orlando in 2025. He pushed back on the query, saying the idea that Disney World didn’t prepare enough attractions to compete for guests that year “just couldn’t be further from the truth.”

“We’ve been aware of Universal’s plans for a new park for more than a decade,” he said. “We have a sophisticated approach to analyzing the needs of all of our businesses and strategically deploying capital.”

The importance of the parks to Disney’s bottom line is also showing up in the entertainment giant’s search for Iger’s successor . (Iger is expected to retire in 2026.) Josh D’Amaro, the chair of Disney Experiences, which includes the parks, is considered one of four front-runners for the job. Notably, it was Bob Chapek, formerly of the parks division, who initially succeeded Iger, though he was later ousted from the role.

A disabled woman planned a 'once-in-a-lifetime' trip to Disney World. Then the park changed its disability policy.

• Disney has revised its Disability Access Service program for theme park guests.
• The updated policy came as some guests attempted to exploit the service.
• But a coalition of people with disabilities says the new policy does more harm than good.

Savannah spent nine weeks and thousands of dollars planning her family's trip to Walt Disney World .

"For me and my husband, this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip," Savannah, 36, told Business Insider.

It wasn't a simple process for the Indiana-based couple, who planned to travel with Savannah's 72-year-old mother. They had to ensure that Savannah, a lifelong Disney fan, could navigate the sprawling theme parks as someone with a physical disability.

"I have had physical issues for the last 10 years that have prevented me from doing a lot of things," she said.

Doctors discovered that Savannah — who asked that her last name not be published for health privacy reasons — had an os trigonum , which is an extra bone found in the back of the ankle, around 2013. Savannah had accidentally broken the os trigonum while running one day and didn't receive medical treatment for eight months.

The incident has continued to cause her pain and affect her mobility. She's undergone 16 surgeries since she was 17, including 12 surgeries on her ankles. Most recently, she underwent a subtalar fusion procedure in August after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 15 months ago.

Savannah had accepted that a Disney World vacation wasn't feasible until her physical therapist told her about Disney's Disability Access Service , which allowed guests who could not stand in line due to a disability to schedule rides in advance and then wait somewhere else until it's their turn.

Savannah doesn't lack full mobility but would need frequent breaks to navigate Disney World, so the service sounded like a good solution. She and her husband went ahead and booked a vacation for May 20.

"I got that glimmer of hope again," Savannah said. "Everything finally lined up, and I was sitting on cloud nine. Then, Disney dropped that bombshell."

Disney's new disability policy

The bombshell: Disney announced earlier this month that it would revise its Disability Access Service policy.

Disney's policy previously allowed anyone who had "difficulty tolerating extended waits in a conventional queue environment due to a disability" to participate in the program, according to Fox Business .

Now, the service is more narrow, accommodating "only those Guests who, due to a developmental disability like autism or similar, are unable to wait in a conventional queue for an extended period of time."

Disney's policy change was, in part, an attempt to prevent able-bodied guests from exploiting the service. A Disney spokesperson told BI last year that there's been an increase in people misusing the service to skip lines and avoid crowds. Disability services are now the most requested service at the California and Florida parks, according to The Washington Post .

"Disney is dedicated to providing a great experience for all Guests, including those with disabilities, which is why we are so committed to delivering a wide range of innovative support services aimed at helping our Guests with disabilities have a wonderful time when visiting our theme parks," a Disneyland spokesperson said in a statement.

The Disneyland and Disney World websites include information for individuals with disabilities across different categories, including mobility.

One alternative for Savannah is the Rider Switch service, which allows one adult to wait with non-riders while the remaining group members enjoy the attraction. When the guests return from the attraction, they can swap places with the waiting adult, who will be allowed to board the attraction without waiting in line again.

But Savannah said the Rider Switch service isn't a good fit for her because she intends to explore the park with her husband, meaning her mother would have to stand in the lines. "Does she really need to stand in a line for 75 minutes for me while I sit isolated from my group?" Savannah said.

Disabled fans accuse Disney of discrimination

Now, Savannah and more than 140 others are calling the revised policy discriminatory.

In a formal letter addressed to Disney's top brass — including CEO Bob Iger — the coalition pointed to cancer patients, narcoleptics, veterans with PTSD, individuals with Parkinson's disease, and other groups as people now excluded from Disability Access Services.

"Punishing disabled individuals for the actions of able-bodied individuals who abuse the system is not a solution," the letter reads. "These changes fail to adequately address abuse; people who abuse the system will still lie."

Savannah told BI that the changes have inadvertently pushed a harmful narrative about who is "disabled enough" to qualify. "You're not the right kind of disabled and you don't matter. That's the way that Disney is portraying that," she said.

She and her husband have already saved $4,000 and collected around $400 in gift cards to cover their vacation costs. However, the policy changes — scheduled to go into effect the first day of their Disney vacation — have upended everything.

"I've invested all of this money that you're not going to give me back if I can't physically go," Savannah said. "What does that look like for me? It did not feel like the Disney that I have heard so many good things about."

Savannah added that had she and her husband known about the policy changes ahead of time, they wouldn't have spent their time or money on Disney.

"I absolutely would not have gone to Disney. I would not have chosen to spend my money there. I would have spent my money at Universal [Studios], where they still treat me like a person," Savannah said.
