Word problems  can be challenging for students, especially second-graders, who may still be learning to read. But, you can use basic strategies that will work with nearly any student, even those who are just starting to learn written-language skills.

Instructions and Strategies

To help second-grade students learn to solve word problems, teach them to use the following steps:

  • Survey the math problem:  Read the word problem to get an idea of its general nature. Talk with your students about the problem and discuss which parts are most important.
  • Read the math problem:  Read the question again. This time, focus on the specific details of the problem. Which parts of the problem relate to each other?
  • Ask questions about the operations involved:  Reflect again. Determine the specific math operations the problem is asking you to perform, and list them on paper in the order they are to be performed.
  • Question yourself about the steps taken:  Review each step you took. Determine if your answer seems reasonable. If possible, check your answer against the book's answers to determine if you are on the right track.
  • Wrap it up:  Scan through the text of the word problems you will be solving to identify any words you do not recognize. List them and determine their meanings before solving the problems. Write brief definitions of the terms for your reference during problem-solving.

Solving the Problems

After reviewing these strategies, use the following free word-problem printables to let the students practice what they've learned. There are only three worksheets because you don't want to overwhelm your second-graders when they are just learning to do word problems.

Start slowly, review the steps if needed, and give your young learners a chance to absorb the information and learn word problem-solving techniques at a relaxed pace. The printables contain terms with which young students will be familiar, such as "triangle," "square," "staircase," "dimes," "nickels," and the days of the week.

Worksheet 1

This printable includes eight math word problems that will seem quite wordy to second-graders but are actually quite simple. The problems on this worksheet include word problems phrased as questions, such as: "On Wednesday you saw 12 robins on one tree and 7 on another tree. How many robins did you see altogether?" and "Your 8 friends all have 2 wheeled bicycles, how many wheels is that altogether?"

If students seem perplexed, read the problems aloud together with them. Explain that once you strip out the words, these are actually simple addition and multiplication problems, where the answer to the first would be: 12 robins + 7 robins=19 robins; while the answer to the second would be: 8 friends x 2 wheels (for each bike) = 16 wheels.

Worksheet 2

On this printable, students will work six questions starting with two easy problems followed by four more of increasing difficulty. Some of the questions include: "How many sides are on four triangles?" and "A man was carrying balloons but the wind blew 12 away. He has 17 balloons left. How many did he start with?"

If students need help, explain that the answer to the first would be: 4 triangles x 3 sides (for each triangle) = 12 sides; while the answer to the second would be: 17 balloons + 12 balloons (that blew away) = 29 balloons.

Worksheet 3

This final printable in the set contains slightly more difficult problems, such as this one involving money: "You have 3 quarters and your pop cost you 54 cents. How much money do you have left?"

To answer this one, have students survey the problem, then read it together as a class. Ask questions such as: "What could help us solve this problem?" If students are unsure, grab three quarters and explain that they are equal to 75 cents. The problem then becomes a simple subtraction problem, so wrap it up by setting up the operation numerically on the board as follows: 75 cents – 54 cents = 21 cents.

Subtraction Word Problems 2nd Grade

Welcome to the our Subtraction Word Problems 2nd Grade. Here you will find our selection of free subtraction word problems to help your child learn and practice solving subtraction problems with numbers up to 150.

Subtraction is a process which most children learn quite naturally as soon as they learn to start counting. During kindergarten and first grade, it is really important for kids to have the chance to work practically with their math.

An example might be that a child has 10 sweets. They give 3 to their teddy. How many do they have left? What if they gave another to their teddy? What if their teddy had 8 sweets, how many would be left for them?

Later on, when children are confident Subtracting practically, they can progress on to number lines or counting back in their heads. When children have understood this, they can begin to learn their Subtraction facts and progress on to column Subtraction.

During Second Grade, children should be learning the following mental subtraction skills:

  • learning their subtraction facts to 20;
  • subtracting 1, 10 or 100 from any 3 digit number;

For pencil and paper methods, children should be able to:

  • subtract numbers with up to 3 digits;

Subtraction Problems up to 150

Each sheet consists of working out the answers to a set of 5 or 6 subtraction word problems up to 50, 100 or 150.

There is a space on each sheet for working out, using whichever method you wish your child to use.

There are also UK versions of some of the worksheets which use pounds (£) instead of dollars($).

Using these sheets will help your child to:

  • become familiar with the language of subtraction: difference, minus, less, ...
  • recognise subtraction word problems;
  • subtract with numbers up to 50, 100 or 150.

Smartick

Examples of Second Grade Word Problems with Solutions

In today’s post, we are going to see a selection of Second Grade word problems that usually appear at the end of a Smartick session for children with a second-grade level . You will also get a chance to see the solution for each problem.

Ready? Let’s go!

How To Correctly Solve Any Problem

  • Read the word problem carefully! You should understand what is being asked very clearly.
  • Write down the data.
  • Complete the operations and always write down the results for each.
  • Write the solution very clearly and respond to what the problem asks.

Second Grade Word Problems

Let’s practice with a selection of Second Grade word problems from Smartick.

Word Problem 1

Second Grade Word Problems at Smartick session

For this word problem, Smartick has given us the solution and it is up to us to select the correct question.

The answer is: ”They were planting 38 chestnut seeds.” Let’s take a look at each option to see which would work with this answer, we’ll use the process of elimination.

  • How many more chestnut seeds than oak seeds were they planting?  This is asking us about the different types of seeds, but the solution is only asking about chestnuts so this question is not what we are looking for.
  • Are fewer chestnut trees or fewer oak trees expected to grow? This answer isn’t the one we are looking for because the answer only gives us information about chestnut seeds.
  • How many more poplar seeds than oak seeds were they planting? Nothing was mentioned in the word problem or the answer about poplar trees.
  • How many chestnut seeds were they planting? Here were are being asked about the number of chestnut seeds that were planted and the solution tells us the amount that was planted. This is the question that we are looking for.

Word Problem 2

Second Grade Word Problems at Smartick session

This word problem is asking how many tablespoons of oil have been added to a stew, and we know that there were 20 tablespoons more added than the 9 tablespoons that the recipe called for. So we need to know how many tablespoons in total were added to the stew.

9 + 20 = 29

29 tablespoons of oil were added to the stew.

Word Problem 3

Second Grade Word Problems at Smartick session

Here, we are being asked to calculate the total number of clocks. To help us solve it, we can create a drawing using the information from the word problem. It tells us that there are 2 clocks on each shelf, and there are 6 shelves.

Word problem for second graders.

Word Problem 4

Word problem for second graders.

First, we are asked which operation we need to use to solve the problem and are provided with the options of addition and subtraction. Let’s read the word problem carefully to see which would work best…

Second grade word problems.

There were 6 oranges before Diego added more, and now there are 10. Therefore, the difference between the amount in the bowl now, and the amount there was before, is the amount that Diego added. If we add the numbers, adding the larger quantity to the lesser quantity, it does not give us the number of oranges Diego added to the bowl. However, if we subtract the smaller quantity from the larger quantity, we should find the difference.

The answer to the first question would be: 10 – 6.

And the solution to the word problem: 10 – 6 = 4 .

Diego added 4 oranges.

I hope you have learned something new from this selection of second grade word problems that appear during our daily Smartick sessions. If you would like to learn more about other primary school math topics, register with Smartick and try it for free.

2nd grade problem solving problems

Teaching Word Problems in 2nd Grade

If you’re looking for a better way to teach word problems, and more importantly, want your students to be more successful in solving word problems, I’m here to help. Teaching word problems in 2nd grade doesn’t have to be a challenge.

Why is teaching word problems in 2nd grade so hard?

When I first started teaching, I taught my students to use keywords, underline and circle, highlight and box…and yet, it didn’t help. They still didn’t know when to add and when to subtract.

And, my students didn’t understand or perform any better.

It didn’t help that I wasn’t consistently teaching or letting my students practice solving word problems.

Word problems have always been a source of contention for my students no matter what grade I taught (1st, 2nd, and 4th), and have always been something I’ve taught haphazardly as part of an adopted math curriculum.

Most math curriculums offer the following:

  • 1 or 2 word problems at the end of each lesson, but don’t actually offer a way to teach students how to solve word problems
  • 1 chapter on “problem solving”

And seriously, neither of those is helpful.

I wanted my students to get daily, strategic word problem practice.

And guess what? When I started teaching word problems in 2nd grade in a consistent, strategic way, my students were less frustrated, and much more proficient word problem solvers.

So, what’s the solution?

Now, I follow a 4-day teaching plan, and assess on day 5.

I no longer teach key words or underlining, circling, highlighting, and/or boxing…instead, I teach my students to look for patterns in how word problems are structured…word problem situations.

In addition, I dedicate 5-10 minutes each day for word problem teaching and practicing.

There's a better way to teach word problems, and students will be successful in solving word problems. Teaching word problems in 2nd grade can be easy!

How do I know what to teach?

I start with the standard.

Honestly, no matter what I’m teaching this is where I start. I need to know exactly what the expectation is, so then I can help my students master it.

The Common Core standard for 2nd grade says:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.A.1

  • Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

While many states no longer use the term “Common Core” many of their adopted standards are the same, or at least similar.

MAFS.2.OA.1.1 (Florida Standards)

  • Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

There's a better way to teach word problems, and students will be successful in solving word problems. Teaching word problems in 2nd grade can be easy!

So here’s what 2nd graders need to be able to solve:

  • Addition/Subtraction within 100
  • One-Step & Two-Step
  • Put Together

When you look at what 2nd graders are supposed to do, it’s no wonder teaching word problems is so difficult, not to mention students actually getting the hang of them.

There's a better way to teach word problems, and students will be successful in solving word problems. Teaching word problems in 2nd grade can be easy!

How I teach word problems in 2nd grade:

At the beginning of the year, students are introduced to our word problem routine after the first couple of weeks of school.

I explain that word problems are like stories we have to read, and understand what’s going on in the story. We call these word problem situations.

Then, I teach students that there are 4 things they should always do when they solve a word problem:

  • Write a Number Sentence
  • I explain to students that I can’t hop inside their brains to see what they’re thinking, and if I don’t know what they’re thinking, I can’t help them become better word problem solvers.
  • Students can draw a picture, use a fact family, base 10 blocks, and/or the standard algorithm.
  • I look to see that the student has the correct answer.
  • For example, instead of just saying “4,” my students write, “Cheyenne has 4 dogs.” This is important to connect math and writing, but also helps students check to see if their answer actually answers the question asked in the word problem.

2nd grade problem solving problems

Launching the word problem routine is all about modeling and routine. It doesn’t take long for students to get the hang of it.

I’ve done the hard work for you – I have 2nd grade word problems for the entire year, ready for you!

There's a better way to teach word problems, and students will be successful in solving word problems. Teaching word problems in 2nd grade can be easy!

What’s the 2nd grade word problem routine?

On Mondays, I introduce the word problem situation. I find it helpful to have students “act out” the situation. Use the example on the situation poster/anchor chart to show students the pattern. (I teach students that the underlined portions of the number sentence are pieces we know, while the square represents the unknown.)

Model and solve the practice word problem, and provide feedback to students.

There's a better way to teach word problems, and students will be successful in solving word problems. Teaching word problems in 2nd grade can be easy!

For the next 3 days, we model and solve a word problem that has the same situation as Monday. So we’re not skipping around. This is very systematic.

Finally, on Fridays, students complete 2 word problems on their own following the same situation we’ve used all week.

For differentiation or extension, students can write a word problem on the back of their assessment that follows the same situation they learned that week. This is such a great way to see if students really understand the situation we learned that week.

There's a better way to teach word problems, and students will be successful in solving word problems. Teaching word problems in 2nd grade can be easy!
