Whether you have experience in the early childhood sector and wish to upskill, or you’re seeking a fulfilling career change, Federation University’s Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) will help you discover how young children learn, and the ways in which – as an expert teacher-practitioner – you can support learning and development through these important early years.

The course takes a hands-on approach to learning, drawing from the advantages of flexible online study. This will allow you to take the next step in your career with the specialised flexibility of online learning coupled with hands-on experience you need to integrate theoretical learning into practice within an early childhood setting. You will nurture children’s social, emotional and language development by designing a stimulating learning environment. Throughout the course you will complete a minimum of 80 days of placements.

Upon graduation you will have everything you need to teach in a variety of early education settings, including kindergartens, pre-schools and day care centres, as well as in special needs settings.

This qualification is professionally recognised by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA), the national regulator of early childhood education and care in Australia. ACECQA accreditation ensures that early childhood education and care services meet high standards of quality and safety.

Real-world placement

'From the first year of my degree, I participated in a professional experience placement organised by QUT. It was a valuable opportunity to create lesson plans, observe, and interact with children. Engaging in placements prepares me for a career in teaching and enhances my skill set.'

The best start in life

I'm currently working as a teacher in an early years centre supporting the children in their learning and development. I get to see children when they come in as young as six months old to when they're five, and see them grow and become their own little people. Their love for learning starts young and we help support and promote that.

Indicative annual fee

A Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) is one that is subsidised by the Commonwealth and applicable only to Domestic students. This means that the Australian Government pays part of your fees towards your program, therefore reducing your program fees, and the remaining amount is paid by you, this is considered your Student Contribution.

To work out how much your Student Contribution will be before you study, you will first need to find out the Student Contribution band your subjects fit into based on their general discipline area. You can then calculate your student contributions to work out the total amount of your contribution.

The Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) is a range of loans introduced by the Australian Government from 2005 to provide fee payment assistance to eligible students. Loans are for Australian citizens studying in Australia or overseas. Permanent residents who hold a humanitarian visa are also eligible if studying in Australia. If eligible you may be able to defer all or part of your Student Contribution through the HECS-HELP loan program. You may also be eligible for OS-HELP if undertaking studies overseas. New Zealand citizens and holders of an Australian permanent resident visa (other than an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) are generally not entitled to HECS-HELP assistance. If you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident your Student Contribution amount must be paid in full by the census date. However, the Australian Government has passed new legislation that changes the way some New Zealand citizens, who hold a Special Category Visa (SCV), studying in Australia will pay their fees. More information is available on the Changes to fees for New Zealand Citizens webpage.

Course information

UNE student studying online on a computer

If you are an experienced early childhood educator looking to become a four-year qualified teacher, UNE’s Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education and Care) is the course for you. This degree is accredited with the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) as an approved Early Childhood Teacher qualification, allowing you to take the next step in your career.

We understand that many of our students are in remote or regional areas, which makes finding professional experience placements a challenge. As a result, most of the placements in this course can be completed in the early learning service where you work, as long as your service caters for babies and meets the National Quality Standard.

UNE's outstanding early childhood team values the practical experience students bring to their studies. This is why our course is designed to extend and hone the skills and knowledge you need to succeed, as well as meeting current sector focus areas.

Why study the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education and Care) with UNE?

This course is designed to meet the growing need for qualified early childhood teachers who share a genuine interest in being an agent for children's development.

It is designed to future proof your career with skills in organisational leadership, contemporary pedagogies and interpersonal skills that are highly valued in a variety of careers.

With a focus on work-life balance, you will gain a broad range of skills and knowledge that will prepare you to become a leader in your field.

One of the standout features of this course is its flexibility. By breaking the course into clusters, you can choose to study in "bite-sized" amounts. Each cluster is made up of two introductory modules and one unit. Introduction modules are half the study load of a unit.

If you are admitted under Rule A, you undertake the introductory modules before the associated unit in each cluster. You can choose to enrol in two modules in one trimester and the associated unit in the next trimester, or you can complete a range of modules before studying the units. It is up to you!

If you are admitted under Rule B, you only complete the unit from each cluster. You can choose to complete most units in any order, subject to some professional experience placement requirements.

Our goal is to help you structure and study your course in a way that works best for you — and we are here to help.

By the end of the course, you will not only further understand the way children learn and develop from birth to five years, but you will also be able to plan and implement enriching, challenging, and stimulating learning experiences.

Furthermore, this degree teaches you how to become an effective leader, implement policies and procedures, and become part of a management team.

What makes our course different?

Professional experience is a vital component of this course, allowing you to apply new knowledge in your teaching practice and reflect on your progress. With UNE, as long as your service caters for babies and meets the National Quality Standard, most of your professional experience placements can be completed in the early learning service you are working at.

Our innovative course is accredited with the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) as an approved Early Childhood Teacher qualification. With our flexible structure, you can study whenever and wherever you want, and you can complete this course part-time or full-time. Prospective students from states other than NSW should contact their state or territory's accrediting body for further information regarding teacher registration requirements.

Depending on your admission basis, the course requires either 45 or 80 days of Professional Experience.

All Professional Experience must be completed in ACECQA-approved centre-based settings.

Make a difference to your career with UNE's Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education and Care).

Commencement in Trimester 3 is only available to candidates admitted under Rule A.

  • Study online

Most of our students choose to study online across three study periods with 24/7 tutor support* and fit study around work and family commitments. Uniquely, our online students are mostly over 30 and bring valuable experience with them. • Study on campus

Many of our students choose to take advantage of the on-campus lifestyle in Armidale, in the beautiful New England region, with access to unparalleled support, accommodation and sporting facilities. These students are often starting their first degree and have left school recently. Through access to academic and career support they get a fantastic start to their careers.

* 24/7 tutor support includes: essay feedback (within 24 hours); live chat 24/7 for generic feedback on academic writing; and subject-specific help at a foundation or first-year level for subjects including mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, business, accounting, microeconomics, macroeconomics and statistics. • Entry requirements

Open enrolment subjects

This degree has eight open enrolment subjects, which students may enrol into without submitting an Application Form. These subjects are: EDC135, EDC153, EDC121, EDC105, EDC163, EDC145, EDC175 and EDC140.

Students who successfully complete at least two of these open enrolment subjects will meet the academic entry requirements for admission to the restricted Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) degree. They will still be required to satisfy all other eligibility criteria.

Open enrolment subjects as electives

Students who do not satisfy all of the Eligibility requirements for this degree, or students who do not intend to apply for admission to this degree, may study the Open enrolment subjects as electives. Please refer to the Award Requirements or Electives sections on your degree page for information about the maximum number of level 1 electives you may include in your degree.

Non-academic Entry Requirements for Teacher Entry

For entry to initial teacher education (ITE) courses, you will need to meet both the academic and non-academic entry requirements.

To meet the non-academic entry requirements, applicants must demonstrate they have the key characteristics outlined by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) as the attributes and motivations common to effective teachers.

To demonstrate this, you will need to complete an online questionnaire as part of your application. The questionnaire must be completed no more than 1 year prior to application.

Completing the online questionnaire

To complete the questionnaire you will require your TISC/OUA/Curtin ID and then follow the link to: Qualtrics Questionnaire

In the online questionnaire, you will be asked several questions to rate your motivation for teaching as well as your involvement in personal learning and/or leadership activities. You will also need to complete two written statements addressing the following categories:

  • Category 1: Your Motivation and Suitability for Teaching
  • Category 2: Your involvement in Personal Learning and Leadership Activities

Once submitted, you will not be able to log back in and change your responses, so please review your responses carefully before submitting.

Complete the questionnaire, review and then submit. Your responses will appear on the screen. Please download the PDF of these responses to your computer for use in your course.

You will also receive an email confirming completion. Please attach this email to your application.

Your responses in this questionnaire indicate the extent to which you meet the desired personal attributes for educators. Your profile in terms of these personal attributes will be considered along with the academic requirements for entry, when determining whether an offer of course admission will be made. You will not receive individual results from this questionnaire, as there is no “pass or fail” mark: your results are considered holistically, in the same way as an interview for a job might be managed.

It is possible that your responses may show that the teaching profession may not be best suited to you right now. If this is the case, you should not consider this to be a personal failure in any way, and you are welcome to contact us to discuss your options.

Special requirements

Working with Children Clearances and Certifications

Students will be required to have a current and valid Working with Children Check as required in the state or country in which the placement provider is located. They will also need to meet any other relevant State requirements before engaging in any work with children or professional experience.

If students have any doubt about their eligibility to acquire these clearances they should contact the local Teacher Registration Authority.

Practicum placement

Professional Experience Placements

All students are required to complete four compulsory professional experience placements as part of designated subjects in the second, third and fourth year of the degree. These placements must be undertaken in a registered school or early learning centre where the language of instruction is English.

Placements must be undertaken on a full-time basis for the number of days shown in a continuous block and students need to plan carefully to ensure they are able to meet this commitment. There is a total of 105 days of professional experience in the degree, which satisfies all States' requirements for teacher registration.

No more than 50% of professional experience days may be undertaken in schools outside Australia. Therefore, students will only be able to complete the first 3-week placement outside Australia and will be required to complete all other placements within Australia.

None of the four professional experience placements can be broken or split into shorter periods.

The third year of the degree includes two professional experience subjects that require a placement in an accredited Early Learning Centre with infants, toddlers and young children (Birth-5 years of age) of 20 days and placement in a school of 20 consecutive days. The Early Learning Centre placement will comprise of a 1 day visit for 5 weeks immediately followed by a block of 15 consecutive days. The final placement of 5 pre-visits and one full school term is the final subject in the degree and cannot be undertaken until all other subjects have been successfully completed. Clearance will be given to enrol in the Internship pending results of all other subjects in the degree.

Students require access to one accredited Early Learning Centre with infants and toddlers (Birth-2 years of age) and three different schools in which to undertake the professional experience placements. Students are expected to be able to travel a reasonable distance to these educational settings in order to undertake their placements. Students cannot complete their professional experience placement in an educational setting where there exists a conflict of interest. For example any setting in which the student or their close family members are employed or attend. Students are not permitted to be paid for a professional experience placement.

Further information about the professional experience placement requirements will be provided to students who have been admitted to the degree. Students who may seek to vary any of the stated conditions and requirements in the various professional experience subject handbooks must contact  [email protected]  prior to enrolling in the subject.

In circumstances where the student is having difficulty securing a placement, the student will need to contact Curtin University as soon as possible prior to the commencement of their practicum pre-visits and placement dates for advice.

Credit for previous study or work

The school-based application must meet Curtin requirements, which are informed by the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia.

Credit for Recognised Learning (CRL) is assessed on individual merit and is awarded for different types of learning, for example, studies you have previously completed or for relevant work experience.

Students must be admitted to an award degree of study before lodging their completed CRL application, along with all required supporting documentation for a formal assessment.

To apply for CRL, please visit the Curtin University website: Credit for Recognised Learning (Advanced Standing)

Degree structure

1. Accreditation requirements mandate that pre-service teachers in a four year program undertake supervised professional experience of no less than 105 days in a formal education setting. Preservice teachers are assessed against the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership Graduate Standards and are awarded a non-graded pass (NGP). Preservice teachers in the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Honours) will undertake 20 days professional experience placement in a child care setting and 30 days in an a preschool setting in order to meet industry requirements as part of the minimum required 105 days.

2. Preservice teachers are required to take the four Professional Experience courses in sequence. All Professional Experience days and blocks must be taken on a continuous full-time basis regardless of whether a preservice teacher is studying in a part-time or full-time mode.

3. Preservice teachers will be required to undertake a Working with Children Check (WWCC) through the Department of Human Services (DHS). The clearance will be valid for five years. The WWCC must be completed prior to being accepted for a placement and can take up to six to eight weeks to be processed. Strict confidentiality is maintained during the DHS clearance process. If a preservice teacher fails to obtain clearance for any reason, the University cannot accept responsibility for obtaining a professional experience placement or any other professional experience activity that a preservice teacher may require to complete the course of study. If preservice teachers cannot undertake a professional experience placement or any other professional experience activity which is a compulsory part of the program, they cannot graduate with an Education Degree from UniSA.

4. Preservice teachers enrolled in programs in UniSA Education Futures and who are completing any in-school or site (ie preschools and childcare settings) observations, activities or professional experience placements, must undertake mandatory training in Responding to Abuse and Neglect prior to the commencement of the activities or placements. In South Australia child protection legislation and policy require all organisations to establish and promote child safe environments. Mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect training is required of all individuals working with children and young people. All preservice teachers undertaking professional experience placements in South Australian government and nongovernment schools and preschools must provide documented evidence (ie a certificate) that shows they have completed all the required training from one of the providers mentioned on the following website. For more information go to the UniSA Education Futures Pre- requisites and Requirements web page.

5. Preservice teachers must complete and provide evidence of completion of Basic Emergency Life Support or Applied First Aid before commencing this course.

6. All preservice teachers must meet the required standard in the national Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) to be eligible for program completion and graduation. Preservice teachers will attempt LANTITE as they progress through their program. Preservice teachers will be required to successfully achieve both the literacy and numeracy components of LANTITE as a prerequisite for enrolment in their final Professional Experience Placement course. The University will provide a range of supports for preservice teachers to help them achieve the required standard. Preservice teachers will be allowed three attempts at each test. Any preservice teacher who fails to meet the standard on three occasions in either the literacy or numeracy test will be counselled regarding options.
