Choose the format that best highlights your strengths and accomplishments. Remember that employers receive hundreds of resumes and may only glance over them to find those that catch their eye. You need to ensure that yours will catch their eye by paying attention to your resume’s organization, appearance and content.

STEPS IN WRITING A RESUME Steps in writing a resume

Examine your background., translate the details into the best language for a resume., write a rough draft., review the rough draft., write final draft., the look of your resume.

• Use action words to describe skills, completed tasks, job responsibilities.
• Expect to write more than one draft.
• Quantify with numbers, dollar amounts and percentages whenever possible (For example, “Organized event for 200 people which raised $2,000 for club charity fund raiser”).
• Be brief, concise and action oriented.
• Use bullets to set off each major idea.
• Error-proof your resume.
• Spelling, punctuation, typing errors, erasures, and correction fluid marks will screen you out from being considered for an interview.
• Use bond paper in white, eggshell or cream with black print.
• Be sure to leave plenty of margin space (approximately 3/4 to one inch).
• Better to use two pages than to squeeze everything on one page.
• Use standard print style for easy reading.
• Use letter quality or laser printers. Photocopies should be sharp and clean. Black spots, smudges or shadows are not acceptable.
• Special effects are primarily used for the creative industries of public relations, advertising, marketing and the media. Others should be conservative in nature.
• It is unnecessary to put the word “Resume” at the top of the page.
• Listing job objectives can be restrictive. Your objective may be to get an interview for every job for which you qualify.

When you find an opportunity that energizes you, be ready to APPLY.

Step 1: know what it is and what it is not, what is a resume.

A resume is a one-page document that highlights your background, skills, and experiences. It shows your “personal brand” to a potential employer, showcasing your relevant skills and experiences for the desired internship or job.

What a Resume is NOT

A resume is not a lengthy novel detailing every experience. It should also avoid inaccurately representing your achievements or merely listing job duties without accomplishments.

Step 2: Think Before You Write

Use the job description as your guide. Highlight skills and experiences on your resume that match the company’s requirements.

• Identify the necessary skills for the position and the keywords the employer is seeking.
• Consider using job scanning software like “Word Cloud” to evaluate keywords.
• Assess how your experiences and capabilities align with their stated needs in the job description, including curricular, volunteer/leadership, and work-related experiences.

Step 3: Accomplishment Statements

Accomplishment statements highlight your skills by citing specific results, and quantitative results where you can. Simply listing duties from your job description is not enough.

Ask yourself the following questions:

• What was the purpose of this work? What goals was I contributing to? How did I go beyond basic job duties? How did I stand out relative to my peers?
• Did this work save time/money, increase customer satisfaction, design/improve a process or policy, etc.? Did I achieve more with less? Did I complete something ahead of schedule/budget?
• Did I receive a promotion and/or recognition during my employment?

Examples of basic vs. professional accomplishment statements:

Camp counselor – basic.

• Worked with kids at an overnight camp
• Led daily activities

Camp Counselor – Professional

• Collaborated with a team of six peers to implement educational, individual and group recreational and social activities during four two-week sessions at a traditional girls’ overnight camp
• Led a group of five, experienced cabin leaders and three leaders-in-training for a division of 56 female campers ages 10 – 12 during four successive two-week camp sessions

Step 4: Use sample accomplishment statements

Step 5: Guidelines

Following these guidelines increases your chances of landing an interview. Remember, your resume is a snapshot of your skills and capabilities for the role, serving as your personal brand for the reader.

• Keep it to one page.
• Use a professional font style, size 10-12, without colors or fancy fonts.
• Include title, organization, location, date, and highlight accomplishments showing relevant skills. Be positive and honest about your experience, skills, and capabilities.
• Arrange entries in reverse chronological order.
• Begin each bullet point with an action verb .
• Prioritize bullets based on relevance to the job description.
• Proofread meticulously for flawless punctuation, grammar, and syntax.

Goodwill’s Career Services begin with an evaluation conducted by a Career Navigator to learn about you and determine which services will be most useful. Our Career Navigator will then assist in your job search, from online classes and training to webinars, virtual and drive-thru job fairs, and preparing for interviews—in person, or from the convenience of your home. Meet with a career navigator to discuss your future. Planning may include determining your career interests, building your resume, and addressing personal needs to help you achieve your goals. This individualized process may also include educational, transportation, and childcare assistance.

Obtain the skills you need to pursue your job and career goals. Skill-building may include short-term credentials to advance your career as well as community and university degree programs. Goodwill services are free, but there may be fees charged by our community college partners. In these cases, tuition assistance is available for those who qualify.

Ability services.

Goodwill’s Ability Services Program provides training and job placement assistance for persons with disabilities. The self-paced format offers assessment and planning, career coaching, resume preparation, Career Readiness Certification, wellness support, and education, job readiness, and skills training. Access Center

The Access Center offers a unique opportunity for adults to earn their high school diplomas, GED, or HSE. Students receive individualized services and support from a career coach to help guide their process to success and job placement assistance. In addition, they receive help from instructors in coursework while earning a credential in a skill area that is in high demand with employers. Career Connections

Goodwill’s Career Connections Centers offer free, personalized services to aid in your job search including resume-writing assistance, skills assessment, career coaching, access to computers, help with interviewing skills, and job placement services. NCWorks Career Centers

Goodwill is the one-stop operator for NCWorks in seven counties in partnership with Piedmont Triad Regional Workforce Board. These counties include Davie, Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin. Goodwill Industries of Central NC partners to provide services in Caswell and Rockingham Counties. In partnership with the High Country Workforce Board, Goodwill provides services in centers in Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes Counties.

The services offered through these partnerships include an array of employment and educational services for both youth and adults funded primarily through the Workforce Investment Opportunity Act (WIOA). In addition, WIOA funding supports youth programming in Buncombe and Transylvania counties. NCWorks Career Centers are a resource for anyone who is eligible to work in North Carolina. Professional Center

At Goodwill’s Professional Center in Winston-Salem, professionals seeking a competitive edge in their job search can receive free assistance with networking skills, interviewing strategies, salary negotiation, social media, and image consulting. The Center also provides career transition services for companies and can connect employers to qualified candidates. The Prosperity Center

The Prosperity Center is as a United Way collaborative of Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina and Financial Pathways of the Piedmont addressing needs identified to assist individuals and families improve their financial stability and economic status. The Center provides vocational and financial training and coaching. As clients learn to improve their earned income, realize available work support income, and manage all their income, they are better prepared to improve their financial status and weather economic storms. We know that people will experience ups and downs in their economic journey; our goal is that they are better equipped to rebound from the downs when they happen. Project Re-entry

The mission of Project Re-entry is to provide transition services for former offenders returning to Alexander, Buncombe, Catawba, Forsyth, Davidson, Davie, Henderson, Iredell, Rowan, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties after serving active prison sentences. Project Re-entry works with the NC Department of Public Safety to provide a system of pre- and post-release services that begin with inmates up to eighteen months prior to release. Long-term services continue after the inmates are released.

Goodwill partners with the Piedmont Triad Regional Council to offer employment and training services that help former offenders find jobs and become productive members of the community. Project Re-entry also works with former offenders in the community that are within 30 days of their release from any state or federal prison facility.  In the last year alone, approximately 400 former offenders have secured employment through the Project Re-entry program. Skill Building

Goodwill provides an array of targeted skills training programs, largely in partnership with the community college system. These short-term programs train students to become employable in high-demand fields such as healthcare, customer service, and hospitality industries, trades skills such as welding, office technology, culinary, professional truck driver training, and many others. Students may also choose to take stackable credentials in some locations so that they can enter the workforce with one credential and add training or credentials to their career track while working.

Skills training classes are offered in Buncombe, Catawba, Davidson, Forsyth, Haywood, Henderson, Iredell, and Rowan Counties. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

Veterans Services

Goodwill’s Veterans Services Program provides holistic services to enhance the lives of veterans and their families through Goodwill programming and in collaboration with like-minded partners. Employment and training services are offered at no cost, including assessment and planning, career coaching, resume preparation assistance, LinkedIn profile set up, job skills training (scholarships available), job placement, and connections to other community resources.  Email to learn more.

Youth Programs

Goodwill offers a variety of free, year-round services to help youth ages 14 to 24 reach their full potential, both vocationally and academically. Some of the services include job readiness training, paid work experience opportunities, communication skills training, individual career plans, assistance in obtaining a high school diploma or GED, and access to other resources needed for future success. Offered in partnership with other community organizations, these programs walk students through the steps of self-discovery and get them on the path to vocational and educational success. Crosby Scholars Community Partnership

The Crosby Scholars Community Partnership is an affiliate organization of Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina. The two organizations have shared goals in that Crosby Scholars helps remove barriers to college and Goodwill helps remove barriers to employment – lack of education is increasingly becoming the primary barrier to employment.  Crosby Scholars currently serves Forsyth, Iredell, and Rowan Counties. Foster Youth Programs

Goodwill partners with Buncombe County Health and Human Services to offer the ECHO program, designed to help foster youth build a network of relevant services to establish ongoing connections with family, friends, mentors, the community, employment, education, financial assistance, skills training, and other resources to facilitate the transition to adulthood. NextGen Youth Services

In partnership with the Piedmont Triad Regional Workforce Development Board , Mountain Area Workforce Development Board , and Goodwill Industries of Central NC, the NextGen Youth Program aims to provide a structure and sense of accomplishment in the lives of youth served. The program is comprised of two main components: education and employment. Completion of a secondary education program is the primary goal. Staff members also provide post-secondary education counseling and career preparation guidance. NextGen serves youth ages 16-24 in Buncombe, Caswell, Davie, Forsyth, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Transylvania, and Yadkin Counties.
