The most common iPad problems and how to fix them

Apple's iPad has consistently marked among the best tablets , and is considered to be a sort of trailblazer in the field in its own right. As a logical result, your first encounters with common tablet glitches are likely to be iPad glitches. If you're not sure what to do to fix your device, that's okay, as you have to start somewhere. Here are some somewhat common problems that we've found plague iPads again and again, as well as some related iPad troubleshooting advice. Take care and read through the issues related to your problem to get started troubleshooting your iPad.

While the following issues are all centered on the basic Apple iPad, they may also apply to other versions of Apple's tablet. We also have guides available to iPad Pro problems as well as iPad Air problems , should you be looking for more device-specific advice.

It should also go without saying that the age-old advice of turn it off and then turn it back on again also applies to your iPad. Our intensive guide about how to reset an iPad — which includes both soft resets and factory resets — may be of additional guidance for you as well.

It can be frustrating if a pixel isn’t working on your iPad. You’ll first notice this as an unresponsive dot on the display that doesn’t change, or stays black no matter what happens. Sometimes there may be more than one pixel like this.

Possible solutions

  • If the pixel still lights up but is simply stuck or never goes to the right color, you can try manually fixing it yourself. Wrap your thumb in a clean cloth and apply gentle, firm pressure to the area of the display with the pixel, slowly moving your thumb as you do so. Sometimes this can help fix any issues the panel is experiencing.
  • Flashing bright, changing colors can also help reset a pixel. You can plenty of Pixel Fix videos on YouTube to run at full screen to help with this, or even find an app that does the same thing.
  • If the pixel is permanently dark no matter what you do, it’s dead. You cannot fix a dead pixel. If it’s a minor issue and not distracting, you can leave it. But it’s a good idea to take your iPad into an Apple Store and ask about a display replacement.

Eager to get the latest iOS/iPadOS updates and all the new features offered? You may discover that your iPad is obstinately refusing to download the update, even if it says it will or if it was scheduled to update at a specific time. Fortunately, this is usually due to not meeting specific requirements needed to update, not a permanent flaw on your iPad.

  • Double check to make sure your iPad is compatible with the latest versions of iPadOS. Check out our lists of iPadOS 16 compatible devices and iPadOS 17 compatible devices .
  • If your device is compatible, you may need to manually update your device. Here's how to download iPadOS 16 and how to download iPadOS 17 manually.

Still not working? Here are some common issues that prevent updates: * Make sure your iPad battery has at least a 50% charge. To be safe, it’s a good idea to just plug your iPad in before you start a big update. * Make sure you are not using a cellular data connection for your internet. The iPad will not start such a big download when on a data connection to avoid using up cell data. * Check that Low Power Mode is turned off. If it’s accidentally enabled, the update probably won’t work. * Disable your VPN if you are using one. While you can whitelist sites on many VPNs, that doesn’t really work for downloading a software update straight from Apple, so disable it for this change, and turn it back on afterward.

You may find from time to time that your iPad screen freezes and remains unresponsive to your touch. You're not alone, as this is a common complaint. The most likely source of the problem is an app, but it’s not always easy to identify which one. If it happens repeatedly, take note of what you have running and try uninstalling it to see if that solves the problem permanently. Whatever the cause, your immediate solutions to quickly troubleshoot a frozen iPad screen are the same.

  • Try restarting your device first by pressing and holding the Power button until you see “slide to power off” on the screen, and then slide to power off. Press and hold the same button to turn it back on. You’ll know it worked when you see the Apple logo.
  • If the screen isn’t responding, you might need to force restart the device in which case you should press and hold the Power button and the Home button at the same time for around 10 seconds. You’ll know it worked when the Apple logo appears. For newer iPads without the Home button, press and quickly release the Volume Up button, press and quickly release the Volume Down button, and then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts.
  • If it stubbornly refuses to react to a restart or reset, then you’ll need to try a restore. Plug it into your computer using the cable provided. Load up iTunes on the computer, select your iPad, choose the Summary tab, and hit the Restore iPad button. This will erase your content, so you may prefer to choose Restore Backup on the Summary tab. Bear in mind that you’ll lose anything you haven’t backed up.

It’s a nightmare with any electronic device when it refuses to turn on at all. Don’t assume the worst, though, it may prove easy to revive.

  • Try holding down the Power button and the Home button together until you see the Apple logo. For newer iPads without the Home button, press and quickly release the Volume up button, press and quickly release the Volume down button, and then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts.
  • Maybe the battery is just empty. Plug the iPad into the wall charger using the original cable and charger that came in the box and wait an hour before trying the first step again.
  • If your iPad turns on but gets stuck during startup, then plug it into your computer with iTunes running and repeat step one, except this time, don't let go of the buttons when you see the Apple logo, keep holding them until you see the recovery mode screen. You should get the option to Restore or Update . Choose Update and it will try to reinstall iOS without wiping your data.
  • If none of this works, then it's time to contact Apple or drop into an Apple Store if you're able to.

iTunes or Finder can sometimes glitch out and not recognize your iPad. Obviously speaking, this can cause major issues with using your iPad as intended. If iTunes or Finder aren’t recognizing your iPad then you can try a few things to solve the problem.

  • Check the battery icon on the iPad when you plug it into your computer. If it has a lightning bolt on it to denote charging or it says Not charging next to it then you know the port and the cable are working and you can move to the next solution. If it doesn’t, then try another port. If that doesn’t work, then try another cable.
  • (If you are running MacOS Catalina you can skip this as you'll be using Finder to interface with your iPad.) Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes. If it’s on a PC then go to Help and then select Check for updates . If it’s on a Mac then hit the iTunes tab and select Check for updates . If you have the latest version or updating makes no difference, try the next solution.
  • Turn the iPad off. Turn the computer off. Turn them both back on again and plug the iPad back in. If you see a Trust this computer alert, unlock your device and tap Trust .

If you find that your iPad won’t charge when you plug it into a power adapter, there are a couple of possible reasons. If it doesn’t charge when you plug it into the computer, it may just be the port you are using, try the power adapter instead. You can see whether the USB port on your computer is charging it or not by looking at the battery icon on the iPad. If it is charging, you’ll see the lightning symbol; if not, it will say Not charging next to it. Some computer ports can’t provide enough juice to charge the iPad, and it will always charge more slowly via the computer, even if it does work. Read on for more ways to troubleshoot and iPad that just won't charge.

  • You want to check if it’s the cable or power adapter itself so, if possible, try the cable and power adapter with another compatible device, or try a different power adapter and cable.
  • It's always worth rebooting your iPad to see if that helps.
  • Some people report success after turning on Airplane mode, so it's worth a try.
  • If the cable or power adapter is not the problem and nothing else has worked, then there could be a fault with the iPad and you’ll need to contact Apple, contact the retailer where you bought it, go into an Apple Store, or take it to a third party repair shop as the culprit could be a damaged battery, or a damaged charge port, both of which are repairable.

Very few users will want an iPad that isn't connected to the internet, but getting connected isn't always easy. Before you start serious troubleshooting, you should check Settings > Wi-Fi on the iPad and make sure that it is turned on. It’s also worth making sure that Wi-Fi is accessible on another device.

  • There’s a reason IT departments the world over tell everyone to turn a device off and on again as a first troubleshooting step — because it so often works. Try turning off your iPad and router and then turn them both on again and wait a few seconds before trying to reconnect.
  • Try telling the iPad to forget the network in Settings by tapping the network name and selecting forget. Turn the iPad off and on again and then reconnect to the network and re-enter the details as necessary. You can also try Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings .
  • Make sure you have the latest iOS software by going to Settings > General > Software update . You should plug your iPad into the power adapter before updating. Older iPads can be updated via iTunes on the Summary tab via the Check for update option.
  • If your iPad still won’t connect then it’s worth checking with your ISP for help or advice. The problem could be related to your specific router. You might want to update the firmware or change the channel.
  • If nothing so far has worked, then you may consider trying to connect to a different Wi-Fi network with your iPad just to test if it works. If not, then it's time to contact Apple for further help.

If you find that your iPad is not its usual zippy self and you are experiencing lag when you navigate, you can try a couple of fixes. You may just have too many things running.

  • Double-tap the Home button and swipe up on each open app or game to close it. If you have a newer iPad without the Home button, then swipe up from the bottom of the Home screen and pause slightly in the middle of the screen to open the recently used apps list.
  • You could also just reset the iPad by holding down the Power button and the Home button simultaneously for 10 seconds. For newer iPads without the Home button, press and quickly release the Volume up button, press and quickly release the Volume down button, and then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts.
  • You really need at least 2GB of free space for smooth operation, so take a look in Settings > General > iPad storage and check. You may need to delete some files or uninstall some apps. Some apps take up more and more space over time, so it can even be worth uninstalling and then reinstalling an app to clear it. You may also consider going to Settings > Safari and tapping Clear history and Website data , then Clear history and Data to clear out your cache, but this will also log you out of websites you've signed into.
  • As a last resort, you might try a factory reset . This will wipe everything though, so make sure you back up first. If you do a factory reset, test the iPad without restoring a backup just to see if it runs any better. If you subsequently restore a backup and it slows down again, then you'll know the issue is with something in the backup.

Cellular data connections dropping can cause serious annoyances as you move about. Obviously, this will be seriously influenced by how good the coverage is in your area. If you have good coverage on the same network with your phone, but the iPad is struggling, you could try a couple of things. First, check in Settings > General > Cellular and make sure it’s on. You could also try a restart. If it continues to be a problem, go through the steps below.

  • Make sure you have up-to-date carrier settings in Settings > General > About .
  • Check that you have the latest iOS software by going to Settings > General > Software update .
  • Remove the SIM card and put it back in again.
  • You can also try Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings .
  • Some people have found success by disabling LTE in Settings > Cellular data > Enable LTE .
  • If none of that works, a factory reset might be worth trying, just make sure you back up first.
  • If you’re still having problems, it’s time to contact your carrier’s support or visit an Apple Store for more help.

Sometimes your iPad will randomly turn off, restart, or have an app crash. You might find that this is a bigger issue on older iPads. You can try a few different things to alleviate the problem. It is quite likely to be related to specific apps, so take note of what you were doing when it crashes and see if a pattern emerges over time.

  • Press and hold the Power button and then slide to power off. Press and hold the button to turn it on again. You could also reset by pressing and holding the Power button and the Home button at the same time for 10 seconds. For newer iPads without Home buttons, press and quickly release the Volume up button, press and quickly release the Volume down button, and then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts. Neither of these solutions is liable to affect a permanent fix, but it may offer some relief.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi and go to Settings > General > Software update to ensure that your iPad has the latest software. If there’s an update available then download it and install it.
  • Open the App Store and select Updates and then update all of your apps.
  • If your crashes are occurring in Safari specifically then try going to Settings > Safari and tap Clear history and website data , then Clear history and data . Note this will log you out of websites that you're logged into.
  • If you’re still having problems then try wiping the iPad with a factory reset and restoring it.
  • If none of the above has worked for you then try contacting Apple. If you’re able to reproduce the crash and you can take it into an Apple Store to show them, then you will be able to get some help.

When everything is running as it usually should, your iPad should take about three hours to recharge. If you own an older model, it still would only take about four hours, at a maximum. That said, many users report that it takes much longer for their iPad to recharge fully. We have a couple of tips to try and speed up the charging process.

  • Make sure your iPad is updated. Infamously, iPadOS 13 caused these types of battery charging issues for many users. If it's an issue with iPadOS, you can't do much except live with it until Apple improves the software and releases a new version.
  • Check your ports and connectors. Look for any signs of damage, grime that's blocking ports, or anything else that may be interrupting the connection. If you aren't sure, try to find another compatible charging cable and switch it out to see if this makes a difference. Do not use an off-brand cable or charger to charge your iPad! If you are using one, stop right away and switch to a version straight from Apple.
  • Make sure your iPad isn't trying to do a lot when you are charging it. Disconnect from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth or put it into Airplane mode first. Don't use your iPad when it's charging, and see how much this helps.
  • Always remember to make sure that your iPad isn't put in a particularly hot or cold place. This can damage the battery and cause long-term problems that can't really be fixed without a full replacement.

We completely understand how frustrating this issue can be, mainly because you likely bought the Pencil to pair specifically with your iPad. We have several solutions to try out to get the two working together again.

  • Make sure you have the right Apple Pencil and iPad. Compatibility issues do exist. We have a full Apple Pencil compatibility guide , and certain Apple Pencil and iPad combinations simply won't work. Also, if you have an iPad Air 2 or earlier model, the Pencil won't be able to work with your screen at all, although some third-party stylus models could work for you. We know, it's confusing. But it's important to find out what Pencil and iPad model you have to see if they can work together.
  • Restart your iPad and try again. When you restart, take a look at Settings and Bluetooth to make sure your Bluetooth is turned on. If you already see the Pencil as a recognized device in the Bluetooth settings, then select the information icon, and choose Forget this Device . Then try reconnecting.
  • Make sure the Pencil is charged. It's obvious, but this problem really does happen a lot.

A bootloop is a glitch where your device gets stuck in a cycle of turning off and turning back on; The iPad continues repeating that over and over again on a seemingly endless loop. We’ve found that these frustrating cycles tend to result from a bug in whatever app you were last trying to use. That said, there could also be a couple of other factors causing the bootloop. We have several recommendations to try out to stop the looping before you take your iPad to the Apple Store for help.

Possible solutions * Wait for an update. Unfortunately, bootloops are often caused by bugs in specific apps or the iPad’s current operating system. In that situation, you just need to wait for an app or OS update to be released. A recent example of this happened in June 2020, when a version of iPad iOS caused iPads to bootloop unexpectedly while working, usually around a minute or so after starting up. Apple doesn’t waste a second when it comes to releasing patches for these problems. Just keep an eye out for new updates. * Force a manual restart, or “soft reset,” and see if it solve the problem. A manual reset is a powerful troubleshooting tool. To start the reboot, hold the Power and Home buttons down for about 10 seconds simultaneously. You don’t have to count it down; you’ll see when the reboot has started because the Apple logo will appear on the screen. Some newer iPads don’t have a Home button. For those devices, press and quickly release the Volume up button, press and quickly release the Volume down button, and then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts. If this doesn’t work, you may need to force a factory reset, unfortunately. Before resetting anything, though, may sure you back up all of your important data. * Go into recovery mode. This feature prevents bootloops and opens the door for your iPad to fully update if your device is stuck in an infinite bootloop. Apple has a full guide , but to explain it briefly — connect your iPad to a computer; then press and release the Volume up button, the Volume down button, the Top button, and then hold the Top button as your iPad restarts. If this is completed correctly, your iPad will reboot into recovery mode. If your device has a Home button, hold the Home and Top buttons simultaneously. Continue holding them until you see that recovery screen.

If you've noticed some display issues with your new iPad mini 6 , you aren’t alone. There have been multiple reports of a “jelly scrolling” effect where both sides of the display are scrolling at different speeds.

According to 9to5Mac , this issue is much easier to spot in portrait mode, and the different rates of scrolling creates a noticeable wiggle as you’re trying to navigate up and down the page. Which isn’t exactly ideal.

The Verge’s Dieter Bohn is one of the users affected by this issue, and managed to get the ‘“jelly effect" on camera - though not without issues. Apparently it’s difficult to get the issue to show up on camera, though by filming in slow-mo Bohn managed to show off exactly what the issue is.

Pretty jarring, right? Bizarrely, according to a reader speaking to 9to5Mac, the issue was also occurring on all the demo units at a nearby Apple Store.

Thankfully, since Apple Store demo units were alleged to be suffering from the jelly scrolling issue, it should already be on Apple’s radar. The downside to this means the problem may be pretty widespread. 

Unfortunately, it’s not clear what the issue is here, and whether this is a hardware issue or some sort of software fault that Apple can patch with an over-the-air update. In any case the only respite seems to be that the effect is much harder to spot in landscape mode.

We’re just going to have to wait for Apple to figure out what’s causing this issue, and what potential fixes are available. Here’s hoping that it’s all a software problem; otherwise Apple’s repairs team is going to end up a lot busier than usual.

The iPad is arguably one of the best tablets on the market. But while many people swear by it for entertainment and productivity, it’s not immune to problems. Most of us know how to troubleshoot common issues on a computer—you just open the task manager and close the troublesome program. But how do you do that on an iPad?

If your iPad is acting up, we’ll walk you through all the most useful troubleshooting solutions you can use to fix. These will cover everything from a quick restart to a complete reset, and everything in between to make sure your tablet is working as good as new.

What Are the Common Issues Many iPad Users Face?

As you use your iPad and install apps over through the years, you might encounter various problems, such as:

  • Your iPad won’t turn on
  • The screen isn’t responding
  • It won’t connect to Wi-Fi
  • An app has become unresponsive
  • The iPad isn’t charging
  • It runs slower than it used to
  • iPadOS randomly crashes
  • You can’t get past the boot up screen

So, if you encounter any of these issues—or others—don’t take your tablet to the Genius Bar just yet. Try some of our basic troubleshooting steps below and see if they’ll fix your issue.

1. Charge the iPad

If you press the Home or Power button and your iPad doesn’t respond at all, check if your tablet is charged. One reason it won’t turn on is that someone might have borrowed your device, used it until empty, and forgot to tell you about it. Alternatively, you might have neglected the low battery sign when you put it away and totally forgot to recharge the tablet.

Also, when you’re recharging the tablet, don’t just plug and leave it. Wait for the iPad to show the charging prompt before leaving it—that way, you can be sure it’s really charging and there’s no issue with the charging cable or brick.

2. Check the Lightning or USB-C Cable and Charging Brick

In case the iPad refuses to charge after you plug it in, check if the issue is with the cable or the charging brick. To do so, try another cable and charging brick combination to recharge your device. If this works, then your tablet doesn’t have a problem, but your charging accessories do.

Before buying a new charging brick or cable, determine which of them has a problem. Test your cable by plugging it into another brick that you know works, then attach it to your iPad. If the tablet recharges, the issue lies with its original charging brick, but if it doesn’t, you need to replace your Lightning or USB-C cable.

3. Close Frozen Apps Completely

Sometimes, you have to deal with an unresponsive app. If the open app doesn’t respond, you might think you’re stuck until the issue resolves itself or your tablet runs out of battery. But don’t despair: you can still recover your tablet. All you need to do is switch to the Recent Apps view.

If your iPad has a Home button, double-click on it to open Recent Apps. If you have a newer iPad without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom and pause your finger in the middle of the screen. Once done, you will return to the Recent Apps view if you have other open apps; otherwise, you’ll see your tablet’s main screen.

4. Force Restart the iPad

For cases where your iPad has completely stopped responding to your taps and button presses, your next option is to force restart your tablet . This can also help fix a variety of other bugs that might be afflicting your iPad. There are different ways to do this, depending on your iPad’s model.

If your device has a Home button, press and hold it simultaneously with the Power button. The screen will go black after around three seconds, and then you’ll see the Apple logo appear after another 12 seconds.

If your iPad doesn’t have a Home button, you’ll have to use this procedure:

  • Quickly press the Volume Up button.
  • Quickly press the Volume Down button.
  • Press and hold the Top button until your iPad restarts.

5. Check for iOS and App Updates

Although force restarting your iPad might clear some temporary issues, some problems might crop up again if they’re caused by a persistent software bug. For this reason, you should check if either the relevant app developer or Apple has released an update for your iPad software.

First, look at your installed apps to see if they need an update. To do so, open the App Store , then tap on your Profile Icon in the screen’s upper-right corner. In the Account view, scroll down until you see Upcoming Automatic Updates . If all your apps are updated, you won’t see it. But if you see this list, tap on Update All .

Now, to check if your iPad has the latest iPadOS version, go to Settings , then tap General > Software Update . A new window will load while your device checks Apple’s servers for any new iOS versions.

If there’s a new version, you will see it under Software Update. Tap on Download and Install . Your iPad will ask you to enter your passcode when you do that. When the download is complete, you’ll see a notification next to General in the main Settings menu. Tap on it, then tap Install Now . The tablet will verify the update, restart, and install it.

If you encounter an error during the upgrade process, here are some ways to fix the iPadOS update process and ensure you’re on the latest version.

6. Free Up Some Space

One factor that many iPad users neglect is storage space. If you only have an entry-level iPad, chances are it only has 32GB or 64GB of storage. While this may seem like ample storage at first, you’ll soon find yourself running out of space as you add photos, videos, apps, and documents.

For an iPad to run smoothly, you should keep at least 2GB of available space. To check your free space, go to Settings , then tap General . In the General view, tap on iPad Storage . From there, you’ll see how much free space your device has left.

We recommend that you enable the Offload Unused Apps option to offload any apps you haven’t used in a while to save space. This will remove the app while keeping all your data saved to the iPad. After doing that, follow these iPhone tips to free up more storage on your iPad .

7. Reset Your iPad’s Network Settings

Another problem that many users run into is their iPad’s inability to connect to the internet. If your iPad won’t connect to a specific network, but can connect to other Wi-Fi networks, then the issue might be with your router. But if it can’t connect to any network, there might be a settings error.

The best course is to reset your iPad’s network settings. This makes the iPad forget all connections saved on it, including any Wi-Fi passwords you saved. Reset this by opening the Settings app, then tapping on General > Transfer or Reset iPad . In the Transfer or Reset iPad window, tap on Reset > Reset Network Settings . Once you’ve entered the passcode, tap on Reset to confirm.

8. Reset All Settings

If any of the steps above fail to resolve your issue, try to reset all settings. This will remove any customizations you made to the settings on your iPad, including inside any third-party apps. But, all your data and the apps themselves will remain.

You will find the Reset All Settings option in the Settings app under General > Transfer or Reset iPad . You then need to tap on Reset > Reset All Settings to execute the command. Like the previous step’s procedure, enter your passcode to confirm your action and tap on Reset to proceed.

9. Erase All Content and Settings on Your iPad

If you find your iPad still not working after all the steps above, it’s time for the nuclear option—reformatting your tablet. This iPad factory reset option removes all the data on your tablet: apps, movies, music, pictures, and everything else. It wipes your tablet clean, making it like new. So, if you’re resorting to this, be sure to back up your iPad to iCloud or iTunes first.

To completely erase your iPad , go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset , then choose the option to Erase All Content and Settings and follow the prompts on screen. Once you’ve completed the reset process, your iPad will then return to the Hello screen from when it was new.

Don't panic if your iPad is stuck on the Apple logo, update progress bar, or in a boot loop. There are a few things you can try to get things working again before getting Apple or a third-party repair service involved.

The iPad occasionally seems to freeze while applying an update or restoring from a backup. This usually involves a small thin progress bar that doesn't seem to be moving. Before going ahead and trying some of the fixes below, give your tablet at least an hour to finish whatever it is doing.

Apple's update progress bars can appear to move at an impossibly slow rate, but as long as they're moving you should leave your iPad alone. Make sure it's plugged in while this is happening to ensure it doesn't run out of power while applying an update.

If you see that the Apple logo is frequently disappearing or your iPad appears to be rebooting itself within a matter of minutes, you're likely stuck in a boot loop and waiting won't help.

The first thing to try is a force restart to see if you can interrupt the process that caused the issue in the first place. If you're applying an update, your iPad will hopefully carry on from where it left off.

There are two ways to force restart an iPad, depending on which model you have:

This applies to any iPad that lacks a Home button. If you swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get back to your list of apps, this applies to your model. It includes modern versions of the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and the iPad mini.

  • Press and release the "Volume Up" button.
  • Press and release the "Volume Down" button.
  • Press and hold the "Top" button until your iPad restarts.

Release the "Top" button when your iPad restarts (ironically, it will show the Apple logo). Wait to see if it restarts. You might want to try this a few times before moving on to the next tip.

Force Restart an iPad with a Home Button

If you have a standard iPad or older version of the iPad Pro, iPad Air, or iPad mini that has a Home button, force restarting is even easier.

  • Press and hold both the "Home" and "Top" (or "Side") button.
  • Release these buttons when you see your iPad restart.

Reset an iPad with Home button

You should see the screen flicker and the Apple logo briefly disappear (before reappearing) when you've done it correctly. You can try this a few times before moving on to see if your iPad boots up as normal.

Putting your iPad into Recovery Mode allows you to update or restore the firmware which should hopefully fix your issue. Be aware that it comes with a risk of data loss, particularly if you choose to restore rather than update.

The first thing you should do is update your Mac to the latest version of macOS, or update your version of iTunes to the latest version if you're using Windows. With that done, plug your iPad into your computer. On a Mac running macOS Catalina or later, open Finder. On a Mac running macOS Mojave or a Windows computer, open iTunes.

Then put your iPad into recovery mode:

  • On an iPad without a Home button:  Press and release the "Volume Up" button, press and release the "Volume Down" button, then press and hold the "Top" button until the recovery mode screen appears.
  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold both the "Home"and "Top" (or "Side") button until the recovery mode screen appears.

From here you can choose to "Update" your iPad using Finder or iTunes, which attempts to update the software without losing data. You can also choose to "Restore" the iPad, which will delete all your data and restore the tablet to factory settings.

DFU stands for "Device Firmware Update" and it's a low-level recovery mode that prevents iPadOS from loading at all. It's a last-gasp attempt to fix any issues plaguing your iPad that may be caused by software that's become corrupted. There are two ways to put an iPad into DFU mode , depending on which version you have:

This applies to modern versions of the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini that lack a physical Home button.

  • Plug your iPad into a Mac or PC and make sure that you have Finder or iTunes open, depending on which operating system you are using.
  • Hold the "Top" (or "Side") button until the screen goes black, then hold down both the "Top" (or "Side") button and the "Volume Down" button for five seconds.
  • After five seconds, release the "Top" (or "Side") button but keep the "Volume Down" button held.

You should see only a black screen when your device is in DFU mode, and Finder or iTunes will notify you that a device was connected in recovery mode.

This applies to iPad models with a physical Home button, including the base-level iPad and older iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini models.

  • Press and hold both the "Home" and "Top" (or "Side") buttons for eight seconds.
  • After eight seconds, release the "Top" (or "Side") button while continuing to hold down the "Home" button.

You should see only a black screen when your device enters DFU. If you see a "Connect to iTunes" message, force restart your iPad (using the instructions above) and try again.

You can now use Finder or iTunes to "Restore" your iPad, which will effectively reinstall iPadOS and hopefully clear up your issue.

If your iPad is under warranty or covered by AppleCare, take it straight to Apple. They should be able to solve your software issues, even if they're caused by failing hardware. You can make an appointment on the Apple Support website.

Even if your iPad isn't under warranty, getting an appointment at an Apple Store might be a good idea. For a simple software restore, you won't be charged. Apple's geniuses may run diagnostics on your device that can lead you to some sort of diagnosis, giving you the option to pay for repairs or not.

If the battery is faulty, you'll get the option of changing it for a fairly reasonable fee. If other hardware problems are to blame, Apple will make it clear what the problem is and give you the option of fixing it. You can then decide whether fixing your old model or just buying a new, more modern iPad is the best path forward.

If there's one thing to take away from a problem like this it's the value of always having a backup. Set up an iCloud backup so that you don't have to think about it, and use iCloud Photo Library to keep your personal media safe . You could also use Google Photos for this, which may better suit Android owners.

Alternatively, you can make local backups of your iPad using a Mac or Windows PC.

We love the iPad. It's a bit like Apple distilled everything that was great about the iPhone and the Mac into a convenient, shiny, handheld device, pausing only briefly to lightly spray its glossy tablet with unicorn tears.

Well, that's what we feel like when it's working.

When it's not, we have to be physically restrained from hurling our iPad out of the window, like an insanely expensive flying disc, while yelling "Now can you access the Wi-Fi?" and laughing like a crazy person.

And Wi-Fi connectivity isn't the only problem you can get with an iPad. There are issues with backing up and syncing, oddball ghost apps, seemingly random jerky performance, and more. The problem, perhaps, is that people look at Apple's iOS devices and see something sleek and simple; they forget that an iPad is a computer.

To be fair, our experience with the iPad has shown it to be at least 99% unicorn and only a tiny amount potential projectile, but when things go wrong it can be frustrating. And that's why we've created this guide, to help you deal with both common and rare iPad problems, making it far less likely that you'll at one point have to sheepishly fish your device out of next door's tree.

How to get the best from AirPlay

AirPlay enables you to wirelessly stream video and audio from an iOS device to an AirPlay-enabled unit, like the Apple TV or an AirPlay speaker system. This means you can often do away with wires and get more use from your Apple TV.

Along with what's available via the Apple TV itself, you can stream from many iOS video apps, such as BBC iPlayer. If you've video files that aren't compatible with iTunes, you can use AirVideo or StreamToMe servers and apps to send video to your iPad, which can be streamed to your Apple TV using AirPlay.

But setting up AirPlay isn't always straightforward. It's on by default on the Apple TV (which you can change in the Settings menu), and most apps include an AirPlay button (a rectangle with an upwards-facing triangle) in the standard playback controls. Tap and select a target (such as 'Apple TV') to stream media.

But some apps - like iPlayer - have proprietary playback controls, and so require you to use the global iOS AirPlay button: launch your app, double-click the home button and slide the app switcher to the right; tap the AirPlay button to select a target, then return to your app.

Note, some apps don't support AirPlay, or will block it, showing a notice on your TV. A few of these work with Apple's AV cables, assuming your TV has the right inputs - check App Store descriptions for details.

My new app won't sync

Sometimes you'll buy a new and exciting app or game in iTunes and it won't sync to your iPad.

When this happens, first ensure you're running the most up-to-date version of iOS for your device. Some publishers are remarkably aggressive in forcing upgrades, including Apple, which demands you install iOS 5 for its iWork apps. Games developers also often support only relatively recent versions of iOS.

If you see errors in iTunes after a sync, or incomplete apps during a Wi-Fi sync (dimmed, with a blank progress bar), it may also be down to a lack of free space. Even if you think you've enough room on your iPad for a new purchase, that might not be so: iOS apps are compressed files, but expand during installation. Games in particular can balloon in size - we've seen 400MB downloads become over 1GB installed.

If a large app won't install, try deleting a few similarly large apps and see if that helps. (You can always back up data - see 'Access all app data'.)

How do I safeguard my data from harm?

People worry about their Mac data, and the sensible ones regularly back it up, in case their Mac keels over. With a mobile device like an iPad, it's even more important to ensure you have backups of your documents, music, photos and so on, in case your device is mislaid, stolen or merely damaged.

Under iOS 5, there are essentially two ways of backing up data. The first is to use iCloud , which stores app and personal data, but not media files from your Mac - those can be restored from iTunes.

To start a backup of this kind, select iCloud in the Settings app and under Storage & Backup, turn iCloud Backup on. This kind of backup can take a long time, depending on what's stored on your device. If you later need to restore from a backup, you can do so by tapping 'Restore from iCloud Backup' on the device setup screen.

The other option is to stick with backing up to iTunes during a sync. But if you do so over Wi-Fi, iTunes only appears to take a backup the first time you sync, unless you restart the app. The Devices section of iTunes' preferences will detail your most recent backup. If it's distant, force a backup by Ctrl-clicking your device in the sidebar and selecting Back Up.

I can't access Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is always tough to troubleshoot whatever the device, because there are many variables. What we'll do here is list common problems and solutions.

First, see if your iPad can pick up the network when next to your router; if so, your settings are fine but your router needs to sit in a more optimal location (at average table height and away from walls).

Should the range be fine, check other devices. If they're not on the network, restart your router. If other devices are fine, toggle Airplane Mode in the Settings app, which will force the iPad to try reconnecting.

Should that not work, select the network in the Wi-Fi section of Settings (tap the right-facing arrow) and tap Renew Lease.

If these tips fail, select 'Forget this Network' in the same pane, hard-reset the iPad, then re-enter your network settings. And if that doesn't work, in Settings go to General > Reset, and tap 'Reset Network Settings' and re-enter your details in the Wi-Fi section.

My iPad's not charging

If you own a smaller iOS device, such as an iPhone or an iPod touch, chances are you sometimes charge it by connecting it to your Mac or to a USB hub. If you do the same with your iPad, there's a possibility that it won't charge up, and you'll see the message 'Not Charging' on your iPad's screen.

This is more often the case with older Macs, but we've also seen this with recent Macs that have a number of USB devices attached. Instead, use your iPad's power adapter to charge it, either directly, or with your iPad sitting in an iPad dock.

Alternatively, try connecting it to a Mac and sleeping the iPad; it will charge, but more slowly, and only when the computer is awake.

If your iPad doesn't charge with the power adapter, ensure the dock connector isn't full of dust by using folded paper to clean it out.

I've got a ghost app

Ghost apps are rare but annoying. Their icons will usually be dimmed and when you try to launch an app, it'll just sit there, doing nothing. Most often, ghost apps are the product of a busted sync attempt, and they're more common when syncing over Wi-Fi.

Getting rid of one can be as easy as holding an icon until they all jiggle and prodding the relevant '–' button, but this doesn't always work.

If that's the case for you, select your device in iTunes and access the Apps tab. Select the relevant home screen, delete the app that's causing problems, and click Apply to sync your device. You might also need to do a hard reset (press home + sleep buttons until the iPad restarts).

Note also that syncing over Wi-Fi takes time, and so if you see loads of dimmed apps with progress bars, your iPad might be working its way through a major update and is best left alone until it's done.

My iPad feels sluggish

One of the remarkable things about the iPad and iOS is how fluid and responsive everything feels - and so it's very obvious if your device suddenly becomes sluggish. You might notice juddering scrolling or animations; in extreme cases, large apps like games will crash on startup.

Typically, this is down to iOS memory management going temporarily bonkers. In theory, background apps should be suspended, and memory freed up for the active app, but on rare occasions this goes wrong.

The quickest solution is a hard reset - hold home and sleep until your iPad restarts. However, you can sometimes get your device running smoothly again by double-clicking the home button, holding an app in the multitasking tray until they all jiggle, and tapping the '–' buttons to kill big games or any apps that run background processes (such as Mail).

iCloud won't sync

A major component of iOS 5 is iCloud, a system that provides behind-the-scenes synchronisation of important content, such as calendars and bookmarks. If an item doesn't sync immediately, don't worry - iCloud isn't instantaneous.

However, if nothing syncs, ensure you're using the same account details on your iPad, Mac and other devices. If needs be, delete all account settings and enter them from scratch.

Also, ensure you've not disabled sharing on your iPad (iCloud in the Settings app) or Mac (iCloud in System Preferences, and also Accounts > Account Information in iCal).

Another syncing problem can involve duplicated data. A fix to stop this is ensuring everything is unchecked in the Info tab when selecting your iPad in iTunes. When upgrading to iOS 5, you may also find device content merges with that from your Mac. Just wait for the process to complete and delete any duplicate content.

I can't print anything

If you've truly caught the iPad bug and want to do some real work on it, it's probable that you'll at some point need to print documents.

The AirPrint feature is Apple's means of doing so - a driverless system that works like magic. The only snag: for it to do said magic, you need a compatible printer, or your iOS device will sadly declare: "No AirPrint Printers Found".

The simplest solution is therefore a printer upgrade - Apple provides an AirPrint compatibility list . But if you don't have money to burn on a new printer, there is a workaround.

Install Printopia ($20, www.ecamm.com/mac/printopia ), activate it via System Preferences, and select the printers you'd like to share with AirPrint-enabled units (such as your iPad and other iOS devices). Once you've done this, your selected printers will appear in the standard iOS print dialog. While $20 isn't free, it's a lot less than buying a brand-new printer!

The App Store app has vanished! With much of the iPad's shiny goodness tied up in grabbing new games and apps, this is a disaster. And with Apple making it easier than ever to 'detach' your iPad from your Mac, it's a double disaster!

But wait! This problem can be rapidly resolved in one of two ways. First, if your iPad is stuffed to the gills, with all 11 pages full of apps, you might have accidentally bumped the App Store app into the 'void' - that mysterious place past the last page. To check, press the home button a couple of times and use Spotlight to search for 'App Store'. If it's there, you can use iTunes to rearrange your icons and put the App Store somewhere more accessible.

If the App Store isn't found in Spotlight, open Settings and go to General > Restrictions, and ensure 'Installing Apps' isn't turned off. (This section also has controls that stop apps being deleted.)

If these options don't work, you might have a problem from a broken sync. Do a hard reset (home + sleep until the iPad restarts), and sync from iTunes. As a last resort, restore from your last good backup.

My iPad's vanished from iTunes

The ability to sync over Wi-Fi in iOS 5 is a big advantage - right up until the point when it doesn't work. Sometimes, your iPad will vanish from the iTunes sidebar, and the 'Sync Now' button in General > iTunes Wi-Fi Sync will be greyed out.

We've had this happen a bunch of times, and the usual culprit is either the Mac or the iPad briefly losing its network connection. Quite often, you can simply toggle Wi-Fi on the iPad (by turning Airplane Mode off and on in the Settings app) and/or the Mac (using the menu-bar Wi-Fi icon) and everything will start working again.

On the Mac side, iTunes might need restarting. If that doesn't work, you might need to restart the iPad and also the Mac, but that's rarely the case. Alternatively, we've found plugging the iPad into the Mac using a cable gets everything back into gear - but who uses wires these days?

How to access all app data

Some apps enable you to access documents using iTunes. You do so by selecting your device in the iTunes sidebar, choosing the Apps tab, and scrolling down to File Sharing. Select an app and you can add and save documents.

The problem is the process is clunky and doesn't work for every app. It's also no good if something goes wrong with your device (so iTunes can't see it) and you need to rescue data.

In this scenario, two apps can help: iExplorer (free) and PhoneView ($20/£13). Both enable you to explore your device much like a hard drive. This means you can grab voice memos, photos that didn't sync properly, music and other media.

In iExplorer, this content is found in the Media folder; PhoneView has a more intuitive interface, where you select media and data types from the sidebar. Both apps also provide access to the Documents and Library directories of individual apps (iExplorer through its Apps list; PhoneView through Apps > Show All Apps). Copy these directories to your Mac and they can later be reinstated.

What to Do if Your iPad Mini Is Not Charging or Charges Slowly

Is your iPad mini charging very slowly or not charging at all? It’s not much good to anyone as a portable tablet if you need to keep it plugged it in all the time. Find out how to tell if your iPad mini is charging correctly and what you can do if it isn’t.

You certainly won’t be the first person whose iPad is not charging or won’t charge . But when you’re having trouble, or if your iPad mini says ‘Not charging’, it can be tricky to know what the cause is. Dodgy cables, faulty software, expired batteries. There are several ways to tell if your iPad mini is charging or not. However, if it was completely dead when you plugged it in, you may need to wait up to an hour before any of them will work.

Your iPad will show a Low Power screen if it doesn’t have enough charge to turn on. If this screen also shows a white lightning connector then your iPad mini is not charging.

On the lock screen, when your iPad mini is turned on, a large battery icon will appear as it first starts to charge. You’ll then see a charging percentage beneath the date.

Finally, the battery icon in the status bar of your iPad mini will have a lightning bolt whenever the iPad is charging. You’ll also be able to watch the battery slowly go up over time.

It should take around four hours to charge an iPad mini from 0–100%. However, the exact time will vary based on the quality of your lightning cable, the wattage of your adapter, the age of your iPad battery, and even the ambient temperature of the room!

For reference, my iPad mini 4 took about three hours to charge to 100% after it died.

There are a few different things you can do to help if your iPad mini is charging very slowly.

Update to iPadOS 17.1

  • Use an official Apple lightning cable or make sure yours is certified MFi .
  • Use an official Apple power adapter with the highest wattage available .
  • Don’t use your iPad mini while it is charging; put it to sleep or power it off.
  • Keep your iPad mini at a comfortable ambient temperature, it will stop charging at 80% if it’s too warm.

The short answer is: Yes . Generally speaking, the larger the charger the faster your iPad mini will charge.  

The original iPad mini shipped with a 5 W power adapter, the same ones used for iPhones. However, later models shipped with 10 W adapters leading to a faster charge. If you have a MacBook from 2016 or later you can use its 29 W adapter to charge your iPad mini even faster.

Barring the 5 W iPhone adapter, wattage of each Apple power adapter is printed on its side.

According to Apple , the iPad mini’s battery will retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 1,000 full cycles. That means you could go from 100% to 0% charge 1000 times. Or go from 100% to 50% charge 2,000 times.

So how long is that? Well, it all depends on how much you use it. If you go through a full cycle twice a week, that means your iPad battery should last a whopping 10 years .

Reduce the brightness to make your iPad mini charge faster.

Apple has a great website with tips for maximizing battery performance across your devices .

The most effective thing you could do is to use it less, but that isn’t why you bought the thing. Alternatively, tweak these settings to make your iPad mini battery last as long as possible:

  • Dim the screen brightness.
  • Turn off Background App Refresh.
  • Set Mail apps to fetch data manually.
  • Turn off Location Services entirely or for specific apps.
  • Reduce the number of notifications that appear on your Lock screen.

If your iPad battery drops below 80% capacity during its first year, Apple will replace it for free under their one-year AppleCare warranty. If you have AppleCare+ on your iPad mini that warranty is extended to two years.

Apple offers out of warranty battery repair for $119 across all iPad models . What’s more, Apple doesn’t actually repair the battery; they replace your entire iPad for this price.

If you’re fairly technical and handy, you could also attempt to replace the battery yourself with a Battery Replacement Kit for your model of iPad. However, we do not recommend doing this if you don’t have any prior experience.

Sometimes, your iPad mini won’t turn on even after leaving it on charge. When this happens, you won’t see a Low Power screen or a Connect to Charge screen. The iPad mini display will simply remain black.

To start, make sure that you’ve been trying to charge your device for at least an hour. If there’s still no sign of life, perform a forced restart. You do this by holding the Sleep/Wake and the Home buttons at the same time. Keep them held down until your iPad mini has turned on and restarted itself, which should take about 45 seconds.

Should that fail to revive your iPad there’s a good chance it hasn’t been charging properly. Check out our tips below to fix that .

Sometimes, an iPad mini sticks on the Low Power screen — even when you’re certain it is charging correctly . This frustrating issue has been resolved for many users by connecting the iPad to a computer.

Once you’ve allowed your iPad to connect to your computer, you should be able to access the device again. It’s worth waiting a bit of time for your device to switch back on. Don’t, however, restore your device unless you’ve already backed up your files.

If you’re still having trouble, try these instructions to restore your iPad mini using DFU mode . But again, ensure you have a backup before doing so!

How Do I Fix an iPad mini That’s Not Charging When It’s Plugged In?

There are several things that could be stopping your iPad mini from charging, covering hardware and software problems. Follow the steps we’ve outlined below to discover the cause and ease your charging woes.

If you can power your iPad mini on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until you’re prompted to s lide to turn off . Power off your iPad mini and leave it turned off for 30–60 seconds before powering it back on and trying to charge again.

Reboot your iPad mini if it isn't charging properly.

You should also check for software updates to iPadOS. These frequently patch software bugs that cause battery performance or charging errors. They can also optimize your iPad mini to use less battery power while you’re using it.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update .

  • Wait for your iPad to update your software. When your device switches back on, enter your passcode and everything should hopefully work normally again.

Apple lightning cables are notorious for splitting and fraying. When this happens, they frequently lose their charging ability. But your lightning cable could be the problem even if it doesn’t look damaged.

Try charging another Apple device using the same lightning cable, if it works then your cable is working fine. If this doesn’t work, check that you’re using either an official Apple cable or a certified Made for iPhone (MFi) cable .

Try charging a different device if your iPad mini is not charging.

Alternatively, try charging your iPad with a different lightning cable. If that works then your original lightning cable is probably faulty. If you bought it from Apple it might be covered by their one-year warranty .

Once you know the lightning cable works, it’s time to test your power adapter. Start by plugging into a different outlet — and make sure it’s switched on!

Then find a different adapter to use. However, know that if your iPad mini shipped with a bulky 10 W adapter, your 5 W iPhone adapter might not be capable of providing enough power to charge an iPad battery.

Alternatively, try charging your iPad mini from a computer’s USB port. Again, this is unlikely to deliver enough power to charge your iPad very quickly, but will give an indication as to whether your original adapter is the problem.

If your adapter is faulty, you might be able to get it replaced under Apple’s one-year warranty .

Shine a light into the lightning port at the bottom of your iPad mini. Look closely to see if there is any build up of lint or dirt inside the port. If there is, this could well be the reason your iPad mini is not charging properly.

Carefully remove the debris using any of the following tools, but make sure you don’t damage the charging elements while doing so:

  • Anti-static brush.
  • Compressed air duster.
  • Clean and dry toothbrush.
  • SIM pin, straightened paperclip, or safety pin.

You could also take your iPad to your nearest Apple Store where they’re usually happy to safely clean your lightning port for free.

The final troubleshooting step is to restore your iPad completely. Doing so will remove all the data and reset the device back to its factory settings.

You should make a backup of your iPad mini first.

  • Go to Settings > Apple ID > iCloud .

We suggest a restore using DFU mode as it completely reinstalls the software and firmware on your device. It’s the deepest level of restore possible and will ensure your charging problem isn’t software related.

Follow this guide to restore your iPad mini using DFU mode.

After all those troubleshooting tips, if your iPad mini is still not charging correctly you probably need a battery replacement. Unfortunately, due to the seamless design of Apple’s iPad, you can’t replace the battery yourself.

Instead, you should book an appointment at an Apple store or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. These technicians should be able to offer you a replacement iPad for the cost of a new battery: $119.

I Can Charge My iPad mini From a Wall Socket, but Not a Computer. How Do I Fix This?

If you’re having issues charging your iPad from a computer but no problems with your wall charger, try these tips to solve the issue.

One of the main reasons why your iPad won’t charge on your computer is because it’s not a trusted device. In other cases, it could be that you haven’t allowed the accessory to connect.

Start by allowing your iPad accessory to connect:

  • Plug your iPad into your computer.

Next, you can add your iPad as a trusted device:

  • Go to your iPad with the device still plugged into your computer. You should see a window asking if you want to trust your device.

Another problem could be associated with the different USB ports on your device. It’s a good idea to firstly try each of these and see if they work. And if that doesn’t work, it’s worth having someone else look at your device.

  • My iPad mini would not charge. At about 3% battery level I eventually tried ‘Reset Network Settings’, and this brought up the charging lightning symbol again, and after a few hours the battery level was 100% again. Thus, you may not need to ‘Reset All Settings’.

Your iPad mini not charging doesn’t have to be the end of your device. Sometimes, simple fixes will help you solve the issue and get back on track. For example, you can try updating your software and to use different USB ports on your computer. Hopefully, something worked in this guide; if it didn’t, you should contact Apple Support.

My Ipad mini will not charge. I tried everything that was mentioned in this troubleshooting guide. Nothing worked. With Louisiana being in lock down I cannot get to an Apple Store. I dont know if its the battery or that the ipad has gotten old. What else should I try until I can get to a store. I use this device all the time.

I use a Belkin charger hooked into my laptop to charge my iPad mini and tonight part of the charging thing went into the Apple iPad.

If I am correct, some of the Belkin charger’s connector end is stuck in your iPad Mini’s charging port.

The safest option is to take it to Apple or an Apple repair center and have them remove the part that is stuck.

However, if you want to try it yourself, we recommend trying to remove the stuck piece(s) using te tools in a standard eyeglass repair kit–these are meant to fix the small parts of your glasses and work quite nicely in small areas like a charging port.

Alternatives include using small tools like tweezers or sewing needles to slowly remove the stuck parts. Just go slowly and carefully.

Hi, I just bought an iPad mini 5 recently and its all ok and keep charge very well, the problem I have is when I plug my iPad into charger, it sometimes takes about 3,4 seconds to start charging and show up the charging icon, I have to mention that I use original apple cable and charger.

I haven’t had this kind of problem with all of my iPhones that’s why it makes me nervous, all I want to know is that is it problem or I should not consider it as a problem?

It’s not a problem. But if you are worried about it and have an Apple Store nearby, set-up an appointment to show them this behavior. They may swap out a new cable/charger for you.

Since you report multiple battery issues with your iPad mini, it’s likely it needs a battery replacement. To check your battery, go to Settings > Battery and take a look at any recommendations and how you use your battery. If you see fairly normal use patterns, replacing your battery is often the best course of action.

If your iPad mini is still under Apple Care, there is no charge for a battery replacement. If not covered, it’s a flat $ 99 USD.

Contact Apple via chat or phone, or set-up an appointment at your local Apple shop to inspect your device.

You can also do this repair DYI by purchasing parts or send it to a local Apple device repair shop.

Sorry to hear about that issue.

We need to determine if the problem is your iPad’s battery or something else, like the cable or charger or the lightning port is clogged.

First, check your iPad’s lightning port and see if there is any debris or lint lodged in there. Check out these tips on how to clean the lightning port .

Next, connect your iPad to a different charger and use a different lightning cable. Power off your iPad Mini and then let it charge for at least 4-6 hours. If it comes on during this time, power it off again.

If you switch the charger and cable and the iPad still doesn’t charge, it’s likely a battery issue.

In that case, we suggest you set-up an appointment with your local Apple Store or contact Apple Support for their battery replacement service. If your iPad Mini is covered under warranty or if Apple determines the battery was somehow defective, there is no charge. For all other cases, when not covered, the fee is $99 for a replacement battery on any model iPad.

iPad Mini Retina – will not charge correctly. If I turn the plug around enough times, then finally I can get a hot connection to charge. But then often it just sops charging willy nilly. It is so unreliable. What is the problem. The old 30-pin adapter I use on my iPhone 4S and iPad work just fine still. It is a problem with the Lightning Adapter. And Apple should address this problem.

I have the mini pad 2 and I have built pc rigs for over 20 yrs , my latest build has the most newest usb compliance with all usb devices yet the mini will not charge on my pc. I don’t believe Apples excuse blaming other peoples hardware. One thing I will note is that out of 3 brand new lightening cables each bought from Apple 2 of them stop charging at less then 90% meanwhile one charges 100% on a new usb charger plug which is also Apple made. I have tested those 2 on other usb charger plugs with the same result while the one works fine and now has me convinced its a Apple flaw! The pc not charging Apple can fix with a simple update but the charging cables need to be inspected better. Heating isses seem to be the common thing for these ipads these days and since their latest ios update I suggest those having the heating issue to not lay it on a flat surface so that it will not overheat.

Hello, my name is Ashleigh. I currently own a first generation ipad mini. I have had it for about 3 years, but I do not know for sure. I have always had very minor issues that were fixable with research. This morning when my iPad was dying, I plugged it in as always. It says it is not charging, but it won’t die when it says %1, which is usually when it begins to fade on me. I tried multiple different plugins, outlets, and computers too, yet it still wasn’t working. I attempted to turn on airplane mode, restart, and it went up to %2 but still doesn’t have the charging symbol. If there are some other ways to try and fix, please let me know. Overall, I have a android smartphone and this ipad mini. I always buy apple for my recreational uses due to the better system, and android for my phone. I have always been very pleased with the two doing their own duties. I am simply having this one small issue. It is a very old iPad mini, so I understand if it’s natural for it to mess up. Responses appreciated, if not have a wonderful day.

The problem seems to be the charging cord itself (on the UBS side) my new mini stopped taking a charge after a few weeks. I noticed one of the terminals or circuits on my cord had developed a green corrosion, and after looking at with a magnifying glass. It looks like the corresponding terminal (on the flip side, same circuit) is also corroded. Possibly from arcing. The cord doesn’t click in or lock, I think the problem is the loose fitting Plug because I used the charging cord from a full size I-pad and it charged fine. I tried a cheap brand universal cord and a message came up that “Apple does not support the use of this charging device” so the warrenty possabily could be voided, so try a Apple charging cord from a reg size I-pad it worked for mine.

I have had no issues charging my ipad mini using the USB port until this week. makes no sense. Nothing has changed with my computer, the ipad still asks me to trust the device and it tells me it’s not charging (it always does that) but now the battery doesn’t turn green as it’s charging. I have a similar problem to yours too. I have an iPad mini for about a year now and my charger got really old. Like the wire has opened up and its all broken apart. So I bought a new charger and it was working perfectly fine for about 1week. After that, one morning I saw that my iPad had 5% charge so I quickly plugged it in to a wall. It wasn’t charging at all!! I didn’t see the sign “Not charging”. But it just wasn’t charging! I’m so sad right now. Please if anyone could help me I would be honored. I can’t buy another charger I mean come on! I just bought this one 🙁

Same problem, apple store told me the plug is at fault as not apple and I should purchase a new apple one . The plug came in the box with the iPad mini. So why is it not apple. It charges fully with my partners plug from his I pad , and within a short time. I can’t charge my new mini from my computer , or my charger in my van, or my iPhone 4 cord which is plugged into the wall (I bought an adapter to change the 30pin to the lightning plug Sold specifically so u can use your old cords, but won’t work!,,

I have a top of the range PC with the latest USB technology and my iPad mini won’t charge off it – I think Apple know there’s major design fault and are fobbing everyone off by blaming on the computer. yeahh I charged mine on laptop and it charged but no fully I had the charger for the laptop on too its a HP it charged up too 86% now my ipad mini wont charge at all because I put it on charge and then came back it wouldn’t on I think it must of been dirt that went through the side edges where the screen is and made something in the mini stop working cause the back felt hot and now I have no idea whats wrong with it I need serious help. 🙁

Returned the mini and got a “real” iPad 4th gen. This is a keeper, so much faster and i like the bigger size now, my eyes don’t hurt from looking at jagged text anymore!

I’ll get another mini when the retina version is out. Perfect iPad 5 would be full sized ipad but with the weight and thickness of the current mini, definitely possible in a years time frame given tech advances.

Got the mini yesterday. Used it till it died and plugged into the wall with supplied gear. I awoke 10 hours later to a 68% charge reading. Terrible! Also this thing freezes up, is hard read with the low resolution screen and it stutters a lot when in use. Iits a lemon rather than an apple. I am taking this piece of crap back!

Apple's updated its website with new information about iOS 15's batch of security patches. The company now says the software patched up an issue that could have exposed a user's private Apple ID information and in-app search history.

It also says iOS 15 patched up an issue that allowed apps to override Privacy preferences.

If you skipped iOS 14.8 or any older versions of iOS, you'll get the security patches from those updates with your iOS 15.8.2 update as well. 

In addition to those patches, iOS 15 comes with some security and privacy upgrades including improvements to Siri. Requests made to Siri are now processed on the device itself using Neural Engine. This makes it more secure. 

If you're an Apple Card user, you'll now get a security code that changes regularly to use when you make online transactions. 

Apple's also included a built-in authenticator that's similar to Google Authenticator. This will let you generate verification codes for enhanced sign-in security under your Passwords.

There's also a Mail feature that hides your IP address.

Apple's iPad Mini 6 has a new display problem.

Apple's new iPad mini 6 is having a bumpy start to life. Despite early reviews being positive, some eagle-eyed users discovered a persistent refresh rate issue earlier this month. Now there appears to be a new display distortion problem affecting some owners, but how serious are either? I sat down with a repair expert to find out.

Last week an iPad mini 6 owner posted on Reddit (via MacRumours ) that when the tablet's display is lightly pressed, the top right corner of the screen flickers - you can watch the video here . The poster described the resultant effect as “distortion and discoloration” and mentioned that it appears in the same spot if pressure is applied around the affected area, not just directly on it. Other users in the thread claimed to have the same issue, with as many saying they haven’t.

What’s concerning is that the Redditor claimed that their replacement unit had the same problem, while another user said their second iPad mini also repeated the display issue. But what is actually causing the screen distortion? Repair specialist Ricky Panesar, CEO of icorrect.co.uk , thinks it is likely that something inside the tablet is pushing on the display. 

“This looks like one of the screws is not quite in properly, or one of the one seals has been double sealed so it's just pushing on the screen.” This, Panesar believes, might be the result of the missing 5G module in the Wi-Fi model.

“The cellular models have an antenna that sits at the top end of the iPad by the power button that lives inside a small module, which is the size of the speakers. So on the Wi-Fi model there's a plastic compartment that Apple put there instead of the antennas because that's how you build an iPad. So I think that something within this is just sitting slightly proud. And we're talking a fraction of a fraction out. So it's nothing to do with the screen itself, as far as we can see from our research, it has nothing to do with how the screens are built.”

The number of complaints about this problem is small at the moment, most of which come from a handful of Reddit posts. There also doesn't appear to be any questions on Apple's support forums. Panesar isn’t sure why some devices are affected while others aren’t. 

“As far as I can see, and everything that I've read and people have reported, it's only in the Wi-Fi models. Have they [Apple] split production over two factories? With one factory putting in the seal one way and the other one isn't? I don't know what the split is because there shouldn't be any variations in this.” 

Panesar also pointed out that part of the issue is the possibility of long-term damage to the iPad's display. In the Reddit user's video it doesn't look like much pressure is applied to trigger the distortion effect, so regularly tapping the display - perhaps from playing video games - could leave an imprint over time.

Display distortion isn’t the only issue affecting the iPad mini. Some owners have also complained about a “jelly scrolling” problem where one side of the display lags behind the other in motion. There are several posts on the Apple community pages , on Reddit and it has been spotted by reviewers. Apple has since claimed that this is normal , but why does it happen? Panesar says the lag likely exists on other iPads, it just isn’t as noticeable. Part of that is down to the size of the iPad mini.

“The iPad mini 6 has all of its controllers sat vertically, not horizontally. So it's refreshing the screen from the side, rather than below. Normally the controller sits at the bottom [of the display] and it's refreshing this way [gesturing up and down] so you're not really going to be able to see that refresh difference."

He continued: “you're trying to take technology built for bigger iPads and shrink it down. You're trying to take a controller that's normally 1.25 - 1.3 times larger, shrinking it down, and making it do the same thing [on a smaller display]. That's harder to do and that's why there are these shifts on one side. But not everybody notices it.”

If you're having issues getting your sixth-generation iPad mini to charge, you are definitely not alone.

In the memo sent to authorized service providers, Apple said that it's aware that some users may report the latest iPad mini as unable to charge after updating to iPadOS 15.5. Apple is advising that service providers and retail staff inform customers to restart the device as a temporary fix while the investigation is ongoing. Crucially, Apple explicitly notes that a hardware replacement of the iPad or its battery will not solve the problem, confirming it's purely a software issue. Apple is currently beta testing iPadOS 15.6, which may solve the problem when it's released to the public.

In a memo sent out to authorized service providers and obtained by MacRumors , Apple says that some sixth-generation iPad mini units are experiencing issues with charging after being updated to iPadOS 15.5. According to the memo, the company is already investigating the issue.

Apple says that users can restart the device as a temporary fix. It also told service providers that the issue is software-related and not to replace devices as a solution for customers.

Apple's temporary solution is an odd workaround. If the iPad dies completely because of its inability to charge, how could you restart it?

You can try a forced restart of your iPad using these instructions:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top (power) button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top (power) button. Only when the Apple logo appears (it might take 20-40 seconds), release that button (ignore all other screens that might appear).

If nothing changes, it might be a screen failure but we, just users like you, cannot diagnose those problems remotely. You'd better make an appointment at an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider and have your device inspected. After checking it out, they'll give you all the available options.

How to share passwords with Apple’s Shared Groups

While most passwords we create should be kept strictly private, there are always some accounts or other secrets we need to share with a limited number of other people. Starting in iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma, you can create groups within Apple’s Passwords system to share and sync passwords securely.

Apple imposes some significant limitations on sharing:

  • Everyone must be running iOS 17, iPadOS 17, or macOS Sonoma (or later, starting this fall) to access items in a shared group.
  • They must be in your contacts list.
  • There’s no support for Android or Windows or for web-based access.

If that fits your sharing requirements, then using Apple’s system could be the best course as it requires no additional software or subscription.

To start sharing passwords on an iPhone or iPad:

  • Go to Settings > Passwords .
  • Tap the + (plus) sign in the upper-right corner and tap New Shared Group .
  • Enter a name into the Group Name field.
  • Tap Add People to populate the group. You can browse the list or start typing their email address, phone number, or name. If someone meets the tests above to be in a shared group, their contact item appears in blue.
  • Tap Create .
  • Choose the passwords that you want to share with the group and tap Move . These passwords are moved from your personal store of entries into this shared group. (You can’t share the same entry with multiple groups.) You can tap Not Now to bypass adding any until later.
  • Choose whether or not you want to notify people you added to the group, which alerts them to an invitation. If you opt not to, they will still see the invitation in Settings > Passwords > Group Invitations .

Create a new sharing group for items you want to have or give common access to among a defined set of people.

  • Open System Settings and click the Passwords item.
  • Click the + (plus) sign to the right of the Search field and choose New Shared Group .
  • Click Create .
  • Choose passwords and click Move or click Not Now .
  • Click Notify via Messages , which creates an invitation message, or click Not Now .

You can move entries into or out of shared groups:

  • In iOS/iPadOS, tap an entry in your main passwords list or in a shared group, then tap the Group pop-up menu to switch between My Passwords or other groups.
  • In macOS, Control-click/right-click a password entry in the main list or in a shared group, and then choose Move to Group >  Group Name . You can also click the i (info) icon to the right of the entry, click the Group pop-up menu, select a different group, and click Done.

To remove a shared group:

  • In iOS/iPadOS, tap the group’s name, tap Manage , and tap Delete Group .
  • In macOS, click the group’s name, click Manage , and click Delete Group .

When you delete the group, Apple alerts you that members of the former group may retain access to passwords you shared, so you should change all those passwords after deleting the group.

Starting this fall with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 Sequoia, the Passwords settings pane or view becomes a freestanding Passwords app. You’ll managed shared groups within that app.
