Night Drive: Fasten your seat belts for this thriller-diller
Sometimes, small is big. With Night Drive, Vysakh seems to have operated on this mantra as he delivers a tight thriller filled with performances grounded in reality, unlike his last few outings.
With a simple story, complex screenplay, and no big names to snatch the limelight away from the plot, Night Drive makes for an absolutely engrossing watch from the moment go.
Georgy (Roshan Mathew) and Riya (Anna Ben) are dating each other. They decide to go for a peaceful night drive on Riya's birthday when things go haywire, changing the tone of the night and the movie. The harrowing moments the characters go through make up the plot of Night Drive.
Kappela movie review: A compelling narrative with outstanding performances
Anna Ben, Roshan Mathew, Sreenath Bhasi impress in 'Kappela' trailer
The movie opens with Georgy, who is an Uber driver, and takes a comic route giving little clues on what's in store.
Vysakh then gradually shifts gears and raises the tension, turning the air into 'full-thriller mode' right at the interval, and leaving the audience glued to their seat.
The second half is all about delivering on the tagline of Night Drive, which is, “The hunted become the hunters”. The crew has done a fabulous job of ensuring the audience feel the tension till the last minute.
The chemistry between Roshan and Anna deserves a special mention, besides their thoroughly convincing individual performances. Indrajith, who plays a police officer, proves yet again that he is grossly underrated in the industry.
Kalabhavan Shajon also delivers a satisfying performance. Siddique, who has been on the lookout for flashy roles recently, catches our attention as the minister who talks in a unique style.
The remaining cast, which includes Renji Panicker, Muthumani, Prasanth Alexander and Santhosh Keezhattoor, have done their bit decently.
Abhilash Pillai, who wrote the screenplay, deserves a pat on the back for presenting the story in a nerve-racking manner.
Shaji Kumar, who is the director of photography, has done a beautiful job capturing the night's eeriness and calmness with his frames. That, coupled with Ranjin Raj's background score, and you have a quality thriller on your hands.
Vysakh, though known for his larger-than-life movies (Pokkiriraja, Pulimurugan), is a director who can experiment with genres of any scale. Movies like Vishudhan and Night Drive are an example of this.
If you're still looking for a hero in Night Drive, it's the story. Making a thriller that resonated with the audience is by no means easy. By successfully establishing a connect with the audience, Vysakh has yet another winner in Night Drive.

What if one long ride at night turns your lifeupside down, and the hole you fell in keeps getting deeper? Vyshak's Night Drive is a story of one such car ride. The film has Anna Ben, Roshan Mathew, Indrajit Sukumaran, and Siddique in pivotal roles alongside Kalabhavan Shahjohn, Kailash, Muthumani, Renji Panicker, and Prasant.
Night Drive follows Riya, a bold journalist whose recent exclusive led to an NIA investigation on Kerala's Tourism Minister's Gold smuggling operation. She is in a relationship with her childhood friend, George, who is an Uber driver, trying to get a job abroad. On the night of her birthday, Riya and George go on a night drive to celebrate the occasion. During their drive, the couple gets into an accident. How the duo handle the consequences of the accident forms the crux of the story.
Vyshak is known for his mass movies like Pulimurugan, and such movies are what the audience would expect from the director. However, Night Drive is different from such films; for instance, Vyshak movies tend to be extremely hero centric but Night Drive focuses on more than one character. Moreover, the number of mass dialogues are at a low in this movie, which is certainly a plus.
A big credit goes to newcomer screenwriter Abhilash Pillai, who has created a moderately engaging screenplay. Even though the entire film takes place in a single night, the movie doesn't feel muchstretched—at least in the first half. Moreover, even at slower moments, you are kept at the edge of your seats to find out what happens next.
Roshan as George and Anna as Riya are brilliant as they accurately portray the desperation that their situation calls for. Indrajit as always can pull off a grey character effortlessly. Similarly, Siddique as a corrupt government official is the norm in many such movies. Prasanth's Udaippu plays the role of that comedic relief efficiently. Unfortunately, Renji Panicker's character became a mere cameo, with scenes lasting for a few minutes.
Despite its neatly written screenplay, Night Drive is not without its faults. For instance, while the first half of the film has a good pace despite an avoidable song, the second half became a bit lengthy with an unexpected twist added simply to create a mass moment towards the climax.
An entire fight sequence was avoidable and felt even forced, eventhough they were shot well. Regardless of all this, Night Drive is watchable but highly predictable thriller for the weekend.

Night Drive: An Engrossing and Super Amazing Thriller
We bring you the movie review of Night Drive
Night Drive After directing superstar blockbusters such as Pulimurugan and Madhura Raja, director Vysakh takes a “smaller” approach with his latest film, Night Drive. The film is a thriller set over the course of one night and stars Roshan Mathew, Anna Ben, and Indrajith Sukumaran in the lead roles. Is the ‘experimental’ attempt successful for the filmmaker known for his massy entertainers aimed at the frontbenchers? Night Drive is a welcome addition to the director’s filmography, but it suffers from poor writing, and bizarre character turns.
Vysakh is well-known for his masala films centred on the hero. With commercial elements in place, his films such as Pokkiri Raja, Pulimurugan, and Madhura Raja starred influential actors such as Mammootty and Mohanlal. In many ways, Vysakh is regarded as a director who creates mass entertainers while keeping an ear to the ground.
That’s why Vysakh’s collaboration with filmmakers like Anna Ben and Roshan Mathews, who work in different styles and aesthetics, is intriguing. As Roshan stated in an interview before the release of Night Drive, this film combines elements from the type of films he and Anna make with Vysakh’s school of filmmaking. To be fair, the film does have that feel to it. While its narrative style is reminiscent of cinema from a decade ago, its story is quite current. Instead of a happy marriage, it appears to be a clash of two generations and two styles.
The film depicts what occurs throughout one night. The main characters are introduced quickly in the film. Roshan plays Georgie, an Uber driver dating Riya, a television journalist played by Anna Ben. Their conversations reveal that they are also childhood friends. On the other hand, a senior politician, Rajan Kurup (played by Siddique), is worried that his involvement in gold smuggling will be revealed soon, resulting in his arrest. He sends his most trusted men to transport the smuggled gold to a safe location. The film begins with Roshan and Riya deciding to go for a night drive, which has long been Riya’s desire.
Riya insults Benny in front of everyone, and they both leave. They are in an accident, and Benny is the officer in charge of investigating what happened to their vehicle. In retaliation for insulting him earlier, he intimidates the two.
Roshan Mathews portrays a typical well-mannered guy who is well-liked by all. His transformation into an aggressive, sometimes hysterical man is reminiscent of his performance in Kappela. The performance of talented actor Anna Ben falls short of justifying her role as a fiery journalist. Indrajith’s acting felt animated in the first half, but he more than makes up for it in the second. Kalabhavan Shajon did an excellent job.
Georgy (Roshan Mathew), an Uber driver who wants to move to Dubai for a better future, and Riya (Anna Ben), a popular news channel reporter known for her exclusive stories, are childhood friends who are now dating. On Christmas Eve night, after going on a night drive to see the holiday lights, things take a bad turn when Riya, who is driving, gets into an argument with police CI Benny on the way back (Indrajith).
Soon after, her car collides with a man who jumps in front of it, exacerbating the situation. The man who was hit had stab wounds, and they are now suspected of a murder attempt as well.

Meanwhile, a senior politician (Siddique) is scheduled to be searched and questioned by the NIA the following day in connection with a gold smuggling case. The rest of the thriller revolves around how the two stories are connected and who is the accident victim who connects the two threads.
This time around, director Vysakh, known for his mass entertainers like Pokkiriraja and Pulimurugan, gives us a more subdued film. It’s just under two hours long, which is ideal for an action-packed thriller that never drags. Abhilash Pillai’s crisp, neat storytelling style fills the plot with twists and suspense. Vysakh’s treatment makes it feel like a new political suspense thriller in which an innocent couple is made scapegoats for the smuggling scam.
Roshan Mathew’s transformation from a soft-spoken young man to an action hero is brilliant. Indrajith, as usual, brings something unique to each role, and he appears to excel at playing police officers. Anna Ben and Siddique perform their roles with the usual aplomb that has become almost a given for them. In smaller roles, Kalabhavan Shajon, Muthumani, Alexander Prashant, and others are excellent, though Ranji Panicker is wasted as Anna Ben’s father.
Under the lens of cinematographer Shaji Kumar, Kochi city appears to sparkle. He almost makes you rediscover the city in a new and exciting light. Ranjin Raj’s background music complements the situation well, though it can be a little loud at times.

An innocent long drive to celebrate a birthday turns into a Kafkaesque nightmare for a young couple in the 2022 Malayalam film ‘Night Drive’.
Directed by Vysakh and written by Abhilash Pillai, the plot is the highlight of this political thriller, even if its packed with too many co-incidences to carry things forward. Actors Anna Ben and Roshan Matthew who were last seen together in the 2020 ‘Kapella’, play the lead pair in this one too. Anna Ben is popular regional news anchor Riya Roy, credited with breaking a gold-smuggling case involving a state minister. Roshan Matthew is Riya’s boyfriend Georgy, an Uber driver (an upgrade, since he drove an auto in Kapella) who wants to move to the gulf for better opportunities. The two seem to be a sweet practical couple, who go out on a drive late night, but get entangled in a dangerous political game after their car meets with an unexpected accident. To make things worse, the couple had a tiff with cop who is now in-charge of their case.
It takes time for the story to interesting, director Vysakh slowly sets things in place to introduce the first major twist, so until then the viewers may feel a little restless about scenes don’t have any context yet. But once the conflict begins, the pace picks good speed and every character’s presence falls into place like a jigsaw puzzle. The journalist-driver couple’s attempts to outwit the system forms the crux of the movie.
Anna Ben is spunky enough as the well-read confident journalist Riya, however Roshan Matthew has a limited set of expressions and isn’t able to give any sort of edge to Georgy. Indrajit Sukumaran overshadows the protagonists as the arrogant cop handling their case. Siddique as corrupt minister Rajan Kurup looks straight out of an actual state assembly, emulating subtle nuances of a politician well. The police-politician nexus and how a corrupt system can turn tables against the most upstanding citizens is portrayed in a very ‘in your face’ manner.
‘Night Drive’ follows Aristotles’ rule of drama when it comes to ‘unity of time’ – the entire story takes place in a period of 24 hours, with clever (if sometimes contrived) little twists and turns which will keep viewers guessing what’s going to happen next. It almost gave me second-hand anxiety, which is a compliment to the makers really, that’s the kind of effect thrillers should have on the audience. I guess.
The climax matches the expectations set up by the makers, however, not before an unnecessary emotional sequence meant to make either viewers empathize with or admire Riya and Georgy. So there’s a bit of sob story stuffed in, followed by an exaggerated action fight… a clear attempt to give the film a more mainstream touch towards the end, maybe a lot of viewers would like it. I didn’t. Thankfully, the emotional detour doesn’t take the climax’s thunder away and ‘Night Drive’ ends with a clear dawn.
It’s a 7.5/10 from me. You can stream it on Netflix.

Night Drive Malayalam Movie
One of the best things about Vysakh's movies is that they are unpretentious. Take the gloriously OTT Pokkiri Raja, for instance. The characters in Pokkiri Raja do not behave like they are making some serious masterpiece. Instead, they act like they enjoy the process, making that silly film more enjoyable for the audience. I walked out of Night Drive with a similar feeling, though it is a completely different film from Pokkiri Raja.
Vysakh weaves a modern incident like the Kerala gold smuggling case into the script. A big politician is facing jail time for his involvement in the smuggling case. He tries to cover up his deeds before law enforcement comes knocking on his doors.
In a parallel track, a young couple, Anna Ben's Riya and Roshan Mathew's Georgie, are on a night drive to celebrate the girl's birthday. But their car crashes into a man on the road. It should make them a witness, but a corrupt law enforcement system tries to make them the masterminds behind a crime.
Night Drive is neither a whodunit suspense-thriller nor a howdunit. It has definite characters, and we know who are on the wrong side and the right side of the law. What keeps us engaged in the proceedings is our eagerness about what is going to happen next and how the good characters are going to get out of this mess. Vysakh keeps the tone of the film light enough to ensure that we do not take it too seriously. He also narrates the story with some confidence and derives consistently good performances.
Indrajith Sukumaran plays a cop we are familiar with, but he is such a good actor that his part never becomes uninteresting. He conveys his feelings about the case with his eyes and occasional pauses. This actor is so good that he could let the audience know the intentions of his character without too many dialogues. Roshan Mathew and Anna Ben make for a good couple. Even when the film tries to highlight the love angle between them, the actors ensure that it does not become overboard. Siddique plays the over-the-top politician character as only he can. On the other hand, Kalabhavan Shajohn does a decent job of playing the bad cop role for the nth time.
Characterization is not a strength of Vysakh, though. Siddique's role is a stock character. At the start, it seems that Anna Ben has a promising role to play here, but the more you analyze it, the less convincing it seems. Ben plays a journo, but she does not use her journalistic clout enough to help herself and her boyfriend get out of trouble. It is a case of lazy writing when the heroine only becomes a spectator of the action around her at one point. The movie also has a slightly problematic approach to juvenile crime in that it kind of condones that form of crime. But these are not quite major deal-breakers because Vysakh maintains a light mood for the most part.
Night Drive will not earn Vysakh any brownie points for filmmaking. The lighting seems way off at many points in the film, and the bits of comedy are puerile. Notwithstanding all those flaws, Night Drive is a coherent film that succeeds in entertaining the audience.

Night Drive (2022) Malayalam Movie Review – Veeyen
‘Night Drive’ sticks to a routine format and follows a wan path that leads nowhere. With a wobbly screenplay that lacks suspense and surprise, this is a Roshan Mathew film that I’m in a hurry to forget.
In the final scenes of Vysakh’s ‘Night Drive’, set in some forsaken warehouse, Riya (Anna Ben) sits sipping a steaming cup of coffee, as she gleefully watches her saviour sweetheart Georgy (Roshan Mathew) bash up the bad guys black and blue. The girl had been abducted for ransom just a few minutes back, and if you are left wondering if they have started serving hot coffee in designer mugs to captives at thug dens, you will certainly be not blamed.
Riya is a firebrand TV journalist with a leading channel, who has just managed to drive a minister (Siddique) to the brink of resignation, through her expose on his involvement in a gold smuggling case. Her boyfriend Georgy is an Uber taxi driver who is instantly likeable with his charming ways. Its Christmas eve and Riya’s birthday to boot, and the couple decide to go on an ill-fated night drive.
For the first twenty minutes of the film at least, almost every scene set in different locations in the script, has a string of blue lights stretched across, leaving a bokeh of blue shimmers in the background. Be it the bakery or the minister’s house, the wayside teashop or the hospital – the blue sparkle makes almost every scene appear visually alike, leaving you in tremendous doubt if it’s a motif that the film maker has in mind.
Perhaps it’s an overdose of the blue tint that gets to you, but ‘Night Drive’ does take quite awhile to set itself in momentum. An argument with the local Circle Inspector (Indrajith) leads to Riya rubbing him the wrong way, and when after a heated argument she rams the car onto a man scurrying across with a sack of gold, its payback time for the irked police officer.
Despite this intriguing premise, ‘Night Drive’ doesn’t really kick into gear, and strikes you as a watered down version of some better thrillers that had driven by this road before. It’s a messily cobbled together story that lacks the flourish and the shrewdness, and is neither much of a mystery nor a particularly thrilling tale for that matter.
We have at least a couple of inconsequential characters played by actors of repute – like Renji Panicker playing Riya’s drunkard dad or Muthumani awkwardly essaying the corrupt Commissioner of Police. While these characters are just pure evidences of a deficiency in depth, there are plenty of other characters as well that grab much screen time and space but are barely etched out in precise terms.
‘Night Drive’ doubles my disappointment, especially since its lead actor Roshan Mathew is one who has wowed us time and again with his incredible talent. Ditto for the female lead, Anna Ben. What is disheartening is that this is perhaps not the film that should have brought these dynamic performers together, since there is hardly anything here for them to munch on! Or even for seasoned actors as Indrajith or Siddique, who are offered zilch opportunities to venture out of stereotypical roles.
The film is decently captured on camera by Shaji Kumar, who goes out of his way to flood his night frames with beam lights and flashes galore. Ranjin Raj’s background score is intrusive and strikes quite a few dissenting notes on account of its (in)appropriateness. Sunil S Pillai’s editing is crisp, but even at a running time that clocks just about a couple of hours, there are instances when the film appears a bit too stretched out.
There is some awkward action that comes right at the end, which is mostly ruined by the coffee sipping heroine proudly gawking at her boyfriend’s fancy moves. ‘Night Drive’ sticks to a routine format and follows a wan path that leads nowhere. With a wobbly screenplay that lacks suspense and surprise, this is a Roshan Mathew film that I’m in a hurry to forget.
Verdict: Thriller Sans Thrills

An innocent long drive to celebrate a birthday turns into a Kafkaesque nightmare for a young couple in the 2022 Malayalam film 'Night Drive'. Directed by Vysakh and written by Abhilash Pillai, the plot is the highlight of this political thriller, even if its packed with too many co-incidences to carry things forward.
In a parallel track, a young couple, Anna Ben's Riya and Roshan Mathew's Georgie, are on a night drive to celebrate the girl's birthday. But their car crashes into a man on the road.
