Why is it important to save your scholarly work in a digital library?

  • Wide access: The Internet allows researchers and scholars around the world easy access to your scholarly work. This is especially important for those who live or work in remote countries or regions or sparsely populated areas where access to scholarly publications may be limited.
  • Preservation and dissemination of knowledge: The preservation and dissemination of scientific works on the Internet ensures the preservation and dissemination of knowledge that can be used to advance science. This helps avoid duplication of research and facilitates access to previous works, which contributes to faster human progress.
  • Citation: Storing research papers online at a specific address provides a permanent link to your work, making it easier for other scientists to cite and use your research. It also helps to increase your citation index in academia.
  • Archiving: Storing research papers online ensures that they are archived and preserved for the future. This is important so that researchers can access previous works and use them in their own research.
  • Dissemination of ideas: Keeping scientific papers online provides an opportunity to disseminate ideas and research results to a wide audience. This can lead to a broader discussion of ideas and a faster dissemination of knowledge in the scientific community.

What can I save in a digital library?

  • E-books: digital versions of books , which can be saved in PDF, DJVU, or other e-book formats.

Why is the digital library free for authors and readers?

  • Accessibility. Free access to information makes it available to all users, regardless of their financial status or location. This is important to ensure equal access to education and information for all.
  • Dissemination of knowledge. The purpose of digital libraries is to disseminate knowledge and information throughout the world. Free access to information contributes to this goal because it allows people to access the latest scientific discoveries and other important information resources.
  • Social effect. Many authors, especially those who publish their works in the electronic library, do not receive direct financial benefits from their publications, but do so in order to promote science and disseminate knowledge. Providing free access to their work helps them achieve this goal.

Planet versus Plastics

Plastic waste has infiltrated every corner of our planet, from oceans and waterways to the food chain and even our bodies. Only 9% of plastic is recycled due to factors including poor infrastructure, technical challenges, lack of incentives, and low market demand.

“We need legislation that disincentivizes big oil from producing plastic in the first place, coupled with enforced single use plastic taxes and fines,” says Desiree LaBeaud , professor of pediatric infectious diseases and senior fellow at   Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment . “We also need truly compostable alternatives that maintain the convenient lifestyle that plastic allows us now."

Plastic presents a problem like no other. Stanford scholars are approaching it from many angles: exploring the connection between plastic and disease, rethinking how plastic could be reused, and uncovering new ways of breaking down waste. In honor of Earth Day and this year’s theme – Planet vs. Plastics – we’ve highlighted stories about promising solutions to the plastics challenge.

Environmental changes are altering the risk for mosquito-borne diseases

research writers kenya

Our changing climate is dramatically altering the landscape for mosquito-borne diseases, but other changes to the physical environment - like the proliferation of plastic trash - also make an impact, as mosquitos can breed in the plastic waste we discard.

Since this study published, HERI-Kenya , a nonprofit started by Stanford infectious disease physician Desiree LaBeaud , has launched HERI Hub , a brick and mortar education hub that educates, empowers and inspires community members to improve the local environment to promote health.

Using plastic waste to build roads, buildings, and more

research writers kenya

Stanford engineers  Michael Lepech  and  Zhiye Li  have a unique vision of the future: buildings and roads made from plastic waste. In this story, they discuss obstacles, opportunities, and other aspects of transforming or upcycling plastic waste into valuable materials.

Since this white paper was published, students in Lepech's  life cycle assessment course  have explored the environmental and economic impacts of waste management, emissions, and energy efficiency of building materials for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Arts. In addition to recycled plastic, they proposed a photovoltaic system and conducted comparison studies to maximize the system’s life cycle. This work is being translated into an upcoming publication.

Stanford researchers show that mealworms can safely consume toxic additive-containing plastic

research writers kenya

Mealworms are not only able to eat various forms of plastic, as previous research has shown, they can also consume potentially toxic plastic additives in polystyrene with no ill effects. The worms can then be used as a safe, protein-rich feed supplement.

Since this study published, it has inspired students across the world to learn about and experiment with mealworms and plastic waste. Stanford researchers involved with this and related studies have been inundated with requests for more information and guidance from people inspired by the potential solution.

Grants tackle the plastics problem

Stanford Woods Institute has awarded more than $23 million in funding to research projects that seek to identify solutions to pressing environment and sustainability challenges, including new approaches to plastic waste management.

Converting polyethylene into palm oil

research writers kenya

This project is developing a new technology to convert polyethylene — by far the most discarded plastic — into palm oil. The approach could add value to the plastic waste management chain while sourcing palm oil through a less destructive route.

Improving plastic waste management

Plastic bottles in a trash pile

This project aims to radically change the way plastic waste is processed via a new biotechnology paradigm: engineering highly active enzymes and microbes capable of breaking down polyesters in a decentralized network of “living” waste receptacles.

Writing the Introduction/Background of a Research Article

Writing the introduction and background of a research article can be daunting. Where do you start? What information should you include?

A great place to start is creating an argument structure for why your research topic is relevant and important. This structure should clearly walk the reader through current, relevant literature and lead them to the gap in the literature that your topic fills. To do this I use the following 4-step argument creation structure.

  • Create argument funnel questions/statements
  • Harvest article quotes that explain/backup each of the argument funnel questions/statements
  • Organize article quotes to best support each section of the argument funnel
  • Write prose that utilizes the article quotes to progress your argument from most well known to your specific topic

1. Argument Funnel Creation

Create an argument funnel with statements that take the reader form the most well known and widely accepted knowledge connected to my topic down to your specific research topic.

research writers kenya

Completed Argument Funnel Example

When creating your funnel statements think about what research exists related to your topic. Where are the gaps in the existing literature? How do you know those are the gaps? If you get stuck, think about the 50,000 ft view of your topic and how you would explain the necessity of your research to people not in your field.

2. Harvesting Article Quotes

Find research articles that pertain to each of your funnel statements to back them up with evidence. As you find the articles put them into a citation manager (e.g., Zotero) now to save yourself time later. While reading the articles, pull (copy and paste) article quotes/excerpts that MAY be relevant. Pull more than you think you need, especially duplicates of the same idea by different authors to strengthen your argument. Store your quotes/excerpts in a document organized by your funnel statements with in-text citations with the page number you pulled it from. The National Academy of Engineering reports can be valuable top of funnel resources.

3. Organizing Article Quotes

Once you have harvested many article quotes for each of your funnel statements, organized them in an order that walks your reader through the literature landscape in a logical way. As you do this assume the reader doesn’t know anything about your topic so start at the beginning. Chronological order is a good place to start but may not always fit your argument. Think about your quotes/excerpts as puzzle pieces, where do they logically fit together?

4. Writing Prose

Now that your article quotes are organized, summarize the quotes in your own voice with appropriate citations. This is the time to begin including transition/connecting words and phrases between summarized quotes to bring your reader through your argument. Don’t forget to include “so what?” sentences and phrases after summarized quotes. In other words don’t only report what other authors said or found, tell the reader why that is important to your argument.

Trump's defense used a jury consultant to research and help them select jurors

Donald Trump

The New Yorkers who could decide Donald Trump’s fate were vetted in real time on Friday by the former president’s defense team.

As the potential alternate jurors were being questioned by prosecutors seeking to convict Trump of illegally paying hush money to a porn star , and by defense attorneys trying to keep him out of jail, a jury consultant hired by Trump's legal team was watching the candidates closely for telltale signs of possible bias while simultaneously feeding the defense attorneys her impressions.

Follow along for live updates

Meanwhile, other jury consultants say, it is likely that a team of researchers working with the jury consultant were doing social media and other online searches to fill out the picture of every potential juror and sending that information to Trump’s lawyers in the courtroom.

“All this has to happen relatively quickly,” said veteran jury consultant Jo-Ellan Dimitrius of Dimitrius & Associates, who has been following the case and identified the firm working for Trump as Magna Legal Services.

The Philadelphia-based firm did not respond to a call from NBC News but court records show that Magna served as Trump’s jury consultant when was ordered to pay $83.3 million in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll for defaming her in 2019.

It was not immediately clear if the Manhattan District Attorney’s office used its own jury consultant to vet jurors and a spokesperson for the agency did not return numerous phone calls from NBC News.

By midday, jury selection had been completed and Trump's first trial was heading for opening arguments.

Using jury consultants for vetting has become a fairly common practice.

“In my experience, there’s usually a consultant sitting behind the lawyers with a laptop who is feeding information to the lawyer doing the questioning of jurors,” Dimitrius said. “They usually have the home office doing the social media checks and other searches because the primary role of the consultant in the courtroom is to listen and watch the jurors and give feedback to the lawyers.”

Sometimes the background checks of potential jurors are being done even before the questioning begins, Dimitrius said.

“Generally on the morning of jury selection you get a list of potential jurors,” she said. “So we will take an iPhone photo of the list and send it back to the office where they’ll start their searches.”

Tampa-based jury consultant Michael Boucher of TCS, who has worked on a number of high-profile cases in New York City, like former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s failed libel case versus the New York Times, echoed Dimitrius.

“In a case like this, we would set up a laptop on the podium and use a messaging app to stay in contact with the lawyers questioning the jurors,” Boucher said. “Not only are you feeding the lawyer information, you are finding on the jurors online, you’re trying to help guide the lawyer asking the questions. Lawyers, at times, sometimes get too far into the weeds and they need assistance so they can come up with follow-up questions.”

At the same time, Boucher said, “We’re watching the reactions of the other jurors waiting to be questioned and feeding that information to our legal team. That way, when the next potential juror steps up we already have a sense of where they stand.”

Boucher said in his experience Manhattan jury pools tend to be sophisticated, well-educated and thoughtful. But cases involving polarizing figures like Trump or Palin “sometime attract what we call 'motivated jurors,' with strong feelings either for or against" them.

“It’s very hard to find anybody who doesn’t have an opinion about Trump,” he said.

NBC News Legal Analyst Danny Cevallos, an attorney who practices in New York and elsewhere, agreed.

“In virtually every other case in the world, there’s not a strong chance that the jurors have tweeted about the defendant or posted on social media," Cevallos said. "This is the rare one-in-a-million case where there’s a good chance all of us have retweeted or tweeted something about Donald Trump."

Renato Stabile, managing director at Dubin Research & Consulting in New York City, said the ability to track social media has revolutionized the way juries get picked — and how jury consultants do their jobs.

“Before you just had to rely on what jurors said in court, and I think lawyers depended a lot more on their experience and gut, and maybe unfortunately, stereotypes that were either correct or incorrect and their past experience," Stabile said. "Now you just get such a better sense of what jurors are really all about based on the articles they’re liking, what they’re reposting."

Examining social media is "probably the most important part of jury selection,” said David Oscar Markus, a criminal defense attorney who, among others, successfully defended former Tallahassee mayor Andrew Gillum against charges of lying to the FBI .

“Lots of folks will come into court and say, ‘Yes, of course, I can be fair,’ or, ‘I have feelings about this one way or the other, but I can put all those aside and give the prosecution and defense a fair shake'," Markus said. "But then, once you see posts, even if they’re old posts, they reveal sort of the jurors’ true feelings.”

‘Our Work is More Important Now, Than Ever’

‘Our Work is More Important Now, Than Ever’ .

Headshot of Amy Ben-Arieh

Amy Ben-Arieh (LAW’07, SPH’08)

Amy Ben-Arieh, an alum of BU’s public health and law dual degree program, responds to questions about her passion for bioethics and discusses her new role as the executive director of The Fenway Institute, one of the world’s preeminent LGBT health and HIV research, education, and policy organizations.

Megan jones.

For Amy Ben-Arieh , an alum of the law and public health (JD/MPH) dual degree program at Boston University, the universe of LGBTQIA+ research feels like home.

“Stars aligned,” Ben-Arieh says of her recent appointment as the new executive director of The Fenway Institute , one of the world’s preeminent LGBT health and HIV research, education, and policy organizations. “It is rare in this life that you can spend your time doing what you love, what you are passionate about, and get paid to do it.”

Ben-Arieh credits her passion for the queer community and keen interest in research ethics to her upbringing. Her childhood was split between Minnesota, where she lived with her parents and attended school, and Maine, where she often visited her grandfather in the coastal, resort town of Ogunquit. Her grandfather aside, she says, both her family and the Ogunquit community are “very queer.”

Something was happening in Ogunquit in the late 1980s and early 1990s, though, recalls Ben-Arieh, “People who were there one summer were not there the next summer—people we knew were disappearing.”

A mystery to many at the time, the origin story of the AIDS epidemic in the U.S. is now well-known: thousands of previously healthy, young men suddenly died of rare, aggressive cancers and pneumonias. The vast majority of those affected were gay.

When a personal friend was diagnosed with AIDS and later died right around the time that highly active antiretroviral therapy was first becoming available, the senseless loss prompted Ben-Arieh to join the Minnesota AIDS Project (now Rainbow Health Minnesota ). Every Tuesday night, from middle school through her undergrad at the University of Minnesota, she helped stuff envelopes to solicit donations for an annual walk to end AIDS. “It was this consistent thing in my life,” she says.

Another significant influence in Ben-Arieh’s life was that of her “adopted” grandparents, an older couple who took her family under their wing when they first moved to Minnesota and had no other connections in the area. They shared their experiences as Holocaust survivors—including participation in the Nuremberg Trials —with Ben-Arieh, who was particularly fascinated by the Nuremberg code , a set of principles articulated in the aftermath of the Second World War to guide the ethical conduct of human-subjects research. She decided at a young age, she says, to make research ethics the focus of her career, and went on to study philosophy in college before coming to BU to complete a JD/MPH.

“I was very interested in the faculty, but also, at the time, [BU] was one of the very few schools that was doing the joint degree in law and public health, and I really saw that as my path forward,” says Ben-Arieh, who graduated from SPH in 2008. “[I saw] medical-legal partnerships as really crucial to how healthcare was going to be functional in the future, and I wanted to prepare for that.”

After graduation, she worked her way up to chair of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) committee at Mass General Brigham (MGB), where she was responsible for all human-subjects research conducted at MGB-affiliated institutions, including Mass General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, McLean Hospital, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, among others. Although the role encompassed nearly everything she had dreamed of, in 2016, when she saw there was an opening at Fenway Health , “it was clear I had to jump,” she says. “As much as I loved my time at MGB, that was where I knew I wanted to be.”

Ben-Arieh has now been with Fenway Health for seven years and counting.

With Amy Ben-Arieh, SPH alum and new executive director of The Fenway Institute

Q: Reflecting on your time as a student, which SPH professors or courses had the most notable impact on your career trajectory? How do you feel your education at BU, particularly in the MPH program, prepared you for your new role?

Wendy Mariner and George Annas literally wrote the book on public health law. I think when folks were talking about vaccine mandates and all these things, the first person I [contacted], even 20 years later, [was] Wendy, being like, what do you think about this? Because that is who I wanted to hear from. As someone who has thought so deeply about these issues, I was confident that [she] would not [have] a reactionary response. In terms of how the degree prepared me, I think that that public health lens is crucial if you have a community focus. Community health, environmental health, they are so solutions-oriented and people-centric; it is a way to center the things that are important. Many of my colleagues also have MPHs. I appreciate the outlook; I think there is incredible intellectual curiosity, a real commitment to doing good in the world, to living into your values. When I see that someone has intentionally studied public health, it is expressing a lot to me about their commitment to community.

Q: Fenway Health has a rich history of advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights. What do you see as the most pressing issues facing sexual and gender minority populations today and how do you plan to address them?

That is a really big question. I think one of the biggest challenges we are facing right now is just the larger political climate. To a degree, we are insulated in Massachusetts, but no one is an island. Research does not happen in one location at one moment; we have collaborators around the country, and we are at a point now where the way we ask questions, the words that we use, how we write grants, all of it is being impacted by this overarching climate of intolerance. Folks are worried that it is going to impact academic freedom and their pursuits going forward.

I speak on this topic quite a bit and inevitably, the folks who most want to talk about it are the folks in the impacted states, because we are still there, LGBTQIA+ folks are still living in those communities, we still have healthcare needs, and so, figuring out how to navigate in this new environment is really important.

Q: What are some of the areas of research that you hope to prioritize during your tenure as executive director?

We are very focused on health equity matters and issues that are impacting Black, indigenous, or people of color. My favorite research story from Fenway is the pre-exposure prophylaxis study. The Fenway Institute was involved in the earliest study that was rolled out in the United States around a pill that you could take to not contract HIV. Since that time, we are now all the way to a place where people can get an injectable a few times a year and not get HIV. We have gone from the research on that all the way through [to where] we have now implemented it at our community health center. To watch that happen has been so gratifying.

Another thing, that my colleague Taimur Khan is talking about a lot, is DoxyPEP . We are having a resurgence of a lot of STIs—syphilis, gonorrhea—around the country, and DoxyPEP is such an important tool to prevent illness. I think it is really going to change the landscape. [DoxyPEP] is post-exposure prophylaxis , so if someone is out on weekends and has had unprotected sex, or thinks they are somehow at risk, they can go to their doctor on Monday and say, “Hey, this is what happened,” and they can get DoxyPEP. It has been used more widely in Europe than the United States. It is a big deal; it is such an important tool.

Q: What are some of the strategies that you plan to use to engage the local community to ensure that your work at The Fenway Institute reflects the needs and voices of the people you intend to serve?

One of the things that—I am going to lean on my IRB background a little bit—we look for in our research project is how the community was engaged, and the decisions around it. We are always looking for: What was your community engagement strategy? Did you have an advisory board? What did they advise on? How did they meet? How do you intend to disseminate the information afterwards? I think that is a piece that often gets lost. We get so focused on—when I say we, I mean the broader scientific community can get so wrapped up in enrollment, recruitment, getting through the study, and then publishing, that that last piece, that connection of returning the results to the community, interpreting it for the community, gets lost. And that is something that we really focus on a lot at Fenway: What is that communication plan?

Q: You mentioned the dissemination of information being really important to your mission at The Fenway Institute. Have you encountered any challenges around misinformation in the community, and have done any work around combating misinformation?

This is not TFI-specific, but certainly, there is a lot of community mistrust of science. We have a lot of very prestigious academic institutions in and around Boston who have not always served every member of our community equally and with respect, and so, that mistrust is warranted. And our focus there is really around being accessible, and accessibility and community competency does not just mean splashing rainbows on things and having a lanyard that says my pronouns. It is really about accessibility; it is about universal design. Can people come in? Can they read your signage? Do you have translators? Thinking about accessibility in a multidimensional kind of way. We really work on that with all of our research in the same way that Fenway does in their care.

Q: What advice would you give current students at BUSPH who are interested in pursuing careers that focus on LGBTQIA+ health advocacy and research, and similar things to what The Fenway Institute does?

Show up, show up at all the events, everything that interests you, meet all the people, this is not a place where shyness serves. Also, serve on an IRB. Everybody should serve on an Institutional Review Board. If you are at all interested in health and equity and justice, that is where the rubber meets the road. And they always need community members with diverse voices, so they need your voice, too. It is a deeply gratifying, very tangible way that you can be involved in the research enterprise.

Partnership with Kuhenza for the Children: Assistant Professor Kathryn Quissell, PhD Led Research Team to Kenya

This past November 2023, Public Health Sciences Assistant Professor Kathryn Quissell led a research team of four UVA students (Sona Kalatardi, Momore Del-Davidson, Seth Tersteeg, and Meagan Gillette) to Kilifi County, Kenya, on the east coast of the country. They conducted research with Kuhenza For The Children , a non-governmental organization (NGO) that serves to transform harmful perceptions of disabilities into those that enhance the lives of children with disabilities. During their week in Kenya, they learned more about Kuhenza’s work, and the work of nurses and community health promoters in the healthcare system, identifying strengths and gaps in services for children born with disabilities. Their work ultimately served two main research projects: geographic information system (GIS) mapping of households and facilities, and the creation of a survey that will be used to assess the stigma against disabilities present in the healthcare system.

The team began the week by touring different levels of healthcare facilities, from the lowest level of dispensaries to Level 4 Hospitals. They were also able to talk with community health promoters and nurses about their experiences treating children with disabilities and the training they receive on disability conditions. With more background information, the UVA and Kuhenza teams worked together to draft a baseline survey of beliefs, knowledge, and behaviors that will be distributed at health facilities throughout the county beginning in May 2024. For the GIS mapping component, the team had the opportunity to travel to and visit some of the families that are served by Kuhenza. They were able to meet families and community members both within and beyond Kuhenza’s network, and discussed their experiences within their respective communities. GIS coordinates were captured to see where children with disabilities live in relation to schools, health facilities, and other important public services.

Two HFA Students Awarded Five College Prose and Poetry Prize for Creative Writing

South College in Spring

UMass Amherst undergraduate students Andrea Peter ’25, a comparative literature major, and Livvy Krakower ’24, an English major, were among the 2024 Five College Prose and Poetry Prize recipients honored at a reading and reception April 18 in Hampshire College's Harold F. Johnson Library.

Celebrating creative writing of all genres, the Five College Prose and Poetry Prize, formerly PoetryFest, was reinstated in 2023 after a hiatus due to the pandemic. The contest received 150 total submissions from students representing UMass Amherst, Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith colleges, and The Care Center of Holyoke this year.

“For me the most amazing thing about the Five College Poetry and Prose competition is to meet fellow writers from other institutions,” says Krakower, a winner for prose who also won the prize in 2023. “Each college in the consortium is so unique and I am thankful that I have been able to hear pieces I would never hear if not for the competition.”

Peter won a poetry prize in the competition.

“Thanks to Five Colleges, Inc., and our English departments for supporting this work,” says Donna LeCourt, chair of the UMass Amherst English department. “Prizes to undergraduates are important and help to build their reputations in literary and professional communities. The opportunity for our graduate students to judge and manage literary awards provides exceptional professional development and helps distinguish them as creative leaders. I’m happy to see this prize come back to the Five College community.”

“I had a wonderful time judging the prose prize,” says 2024 prose judge and UMass Amherst MFA candidate Danielle Bradley, who was joined on the judging panel by fellow UMass Amherst MFA candidate and poet Ide Thompson ’24. “All of the submissions were impressive, and it was so special to hear many of the winners read their submissions at the reception.”
