Wolfram Alpha Dashboard

The education landscape has experienced a paradigm shift with the advent of digital tools. Amidst a plethora of online resources, Wolfram Alpha stands out as an unparalleled computational knowledge engine.

Designed to serve both students and professionals, it goes beyond simple search to offer answers to complex questions across multiple disciplines. Wolfram Alpha’s unique approach to online search is what sets it apart. Unlike traditional search engines that pull up web pages containing possible answers, Wolfram Alpha computes answers on the fly. This means students get direct and precise answers to specific questions, ranging from mathematical equations to historical data.

Whether you’re a history buff, a budding physicist, or a math enthusiast, Wolfram Alpha has you covered. It spans mathematics, science, engineering, geography, history, and music. Instead of just offering answers, Wolfram Alpha often provides additional information and related topics, encouraging students to explore further and satisfy their curiosity.

Wolfram Alpha is more than just a search engine. It’s a student’s companion in the journey of knowledge. Its computational prowess and extensive knowledge base ensure that students are not merely searching but truly understanding.

Wolfram Alpha’s best features

  • The engine understands natural language, which means students don’t need to phrase questions in a specific technical format
  • With dedicated apps for both iOS and Android, this virtual learning assistant is not confined to a desktop. Whether on a bus or in a cafe, students can have the vast computational power of Wolfram Alpha right in their pocket
  • Numbers and data come alive with Wolfram Alpha’s dynamic visualization capabilities. Graphs, charts, and other visual representations help students grasp complex concepts more intuitively.
  • For students grappling with math problems, Wolfram Alpha doesn’t just provide the answer but can also showcase a step-by-step breakdown of the solution, aiding in understanding and learning

Wolfram Alpha limitations

  • While Wolfram Alpha can handle a wide range of questions, there’s a learning curve involved in phrasing complex queries to get the desired result
  • It might not be the go-to tool for subjective topics, opinion-based questions, or areas that require human judgment
  • For highly specialized academic or research-based questions, the platform might sometimes provide a more generalized answer, which might not delve into the nuances a student or researcher might be looking for

Title: automated black-box prompt engineering for personalized text-to-image generation.

Abstract: Prompt engineering is effective for controlling the output of text-to-image (T2I) generative models, but it is also laborious due to the need for manually crafted prompts. This challenge has spurred the development of algorithms for automated prompt generation. However, these methods often struggle with transferability across T2I models, require white-box access to the underlying model, and produce non-intuitive prompts. In this work, we introduce PRISM, an algorithm that automatically identifies human-interpretable and transferable prompts that can effectively generate desired concepts given only black-box access to T2I models. Inspired by large language model (LLM) jailbreaking, PRISM leverages the in-context learning ability of LLMs to iteratively refine the candidate prompts distribution for given reference images. Our experiments demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of PRISM in generating accurate prompts for objects, styles and images across multiple T2I models, including Stable Diffusion, DALL-E, and Midjourney.

Tool Assignments

As a company, review the tool assignments for each riding position and discuss the use of each tool.

By Forest Reeder

A well-trained and disciplined company knows to never step from their apparatus without a tool in their hand. The firefighting tools carried by company members should complement each other and be able to perform the tasks of the primary company assignment.

Proper size-up and SOGs will further identify what the company members take to the incident scene, but a standard assignement should exist to provide a guideline for what each member is responsible for. Further, these tool assignments may be different for the types of occupancies you respond to. As a company, review the tool assignments for each riding position and discuss the use of each tool.

The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence tools in Scientific Publishing with Wiley

"Headshot of Gaia Tomasello"

Gaia Tomasello Editor in Chief, Advanced Electronic Materials, WILEY

"The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence tools in Scientific Publishing with Wiley"

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) tools and AI-assisted technologies are becoming an increasingly integral part of our modern research landscape and consequently are already impacting the publishing industry as well. The current wave of GAI tools uses vast datasets in order to generate new content instead of using published data to write structured articles. The result is a paradigm shift in publishing and digital economy that will impact the publishers around the globe requiring them to adjust accordingly. It is therefore of paramount importance being aware of the limitations, risks, and potential implications when using them, gaining a deeper understanding of the kinds of data and models on which GAI tools are trained, the accuracy of the results, and the implications for intellectual property and law. In this seminar at the New York University, as a Wiley peer review editor, after a short introduction to our portfolio and the opportunities to publish with our prestigious journals, I will deliver an overview on which kinds of GAI tools can be used when preparing a scientific manuscript, always keeping in mind the scope of enhancing the impact of a scientific text rather than replacing the critical thinking, analysis, and creative thought that it needs absolutely to be preserved. It is an exciting time for the development of GAI tools in research and scientific publishing - and with caution and consideration, we can get the most out of the potential opportunities that they offer.

Bringing decades of IT experience to the classroom

IIT Instructor Patrick Wright

Integrated Information Technology (IIT) Instructor Patrick Wright has been immersed in the IT industry since the 1980s. He held roles such as computer engineer, programmer, vice president and chief information officer before finding his calling in teaching. Since 2021, Wright has helped undergraduate students in the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) hone their interests and apply their skills to real-world situations.

Wright entered the IT field as an Apple Macintosh support technician while earning his bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from James Madison University. Since then, he has addressed the IT needs of numerous industries including legal, health care and government contracts. While working for software developer Tisoft in the 1990s, he was asked to train system managers around the country on new equipment being introduced in their offices—the personal computer.

“With PCs, many employees were given new job duties that they didn’t necessarily ask for. My goal was to break that down for them and make it interesting,” Wright says. “I enjoy breaking down complex things and seeing the lightbulb go off in their heads.”

Teaching is a Wright family tradition. His grandmother was a teacher, as are his son and sister, and his father was a flight instructor. In 1998, Wright followed suit with the launch of Wright Training Consultants, which offers training for technical certifications. Even before starting his own consulting firm, he enjoyed mentoring his staff.

“I always found myself acting as a mentor to staff, helping people develop their careers and grasp ideas they didn’t fully understand. When they get it, that’s the satisfaction,” Wright says.

Wright’s transition from professional training into academia began in 2010 after a chance encounter with Midlands Technical College President Sonny White Jr., who was looking for a business-minded candidate to chair the college’s Information Systems Technology Department. Wright accepted that role and served on the Midlands Tech faculty until joining the CEC in 2021.

“Patrick brings to IIT a wealth of comprehensive knowledge and experience in the information technology field, and he is passionate about sharing that knowledge with students,” says Betty Regan , chair of the Department of IIT . “He has taught many IT courses to corporate and government clients, is a qualified CISCO Academy instructor and has considerable experience with industry certification programs such as CompTIA Security+ and Microsoft Certified Engineer.”

Wright says the biggest difference in teaching in academia versus professional settings is helping students translate what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations. He leans on his industry experience to illustrate various applications.

“I’ve worked in both large and small organizations, so what I bring to the table is showing them what an employer will look for,” he says. “I’ve hired people with these skills, so I can bring a different perspective than the research angle.”

Wright also strives to help students identify their interests under the information technology umbrella. With expertise in areas ranging from programming and databases to network integration, he is well-equipped to help them find their strengths in a broad field. According to Wright, most importantly, IIT students should have a constant desire to learn in the ever-changing field.

“Students have to figure out what slice of IT they want moving forward, but it’s also just as important that they figure out what they don’t want to do,” Wright says. “I like to expose them to different areas and then guide them in a certain area once they become more focused. It’s good to see their passion and to help steer them in the right direction.”

Throughout his career, Wright has taught students aged 18 to 70 in professional environments, continuing education classes and a university setting. His greatest satisfaction is not in the teaching, but what happens after they leave the classroom.

“Lecturing is great, but it’s really special when they come back and share how their education helped change their lives,” Wright says. “One of my students went from flipping burgers to working at CISCO’s largest facility in Raleigh. His education provided a shift in his quality of life and everything that goes with that, from job satisfaction to supporting his family.”

Moscow major projects

Since launching modern Russia’s largest construction program in 2011, Moscow has more than doubled its territory. To catalyze the full potential of this rapidly-growing metropolitan area of 19.5 million people, the City of Moscow’s government pays significant attention to infrastructure as one of the key pillars of urban development—with a current focus on projects that create livable and comfortable urban spaces for both citizens and tourists.

Following its first five years of projects, Moscow was given special recognition for “demonstrating outstanding strategic commitment and ambition” by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP). That period saw 50 million square meters of real estate developed, 370 social infrastructure objects built, and the metro expanded by 30 percent—including 101 kilometers of metro lines and 55 new stations. Innovative finance solutions, necessitated by the city government’s debt-free approach to development, enabled all this whilst maintaining a budget surplus and remaining a net donor region within Russia.

On 30-31 May 2018, the City of Moscow and Mosinzhproekt—a large Russian engineering, construction and project management company—hosted an Innovation Site Visit to showcase Moscow’s major projects to the Global Infrastructure Initiative (GII) community. Through roundtable discussions and site visits with project executives, participants explored where innovation and technology have enabled the step-changes that have allowed Moscow to deliver major projects on a short timeline—and how to apply these lessons to other cities and major projects.

The following insights emerged during GII’s Innovation Site Visit in Moscow:

  • Establish a structure for citizen involvement. Major urban infrastructure projects are an extremely visible expenditure of taxpayer funds while also often being large disruptors of daily life. A foundation of citizen support is essential for success and requires a thoughtful engagement program. In Moscow, citizens are encouraged to participate in the planning process by steering major initiatives through the “Active Citizen” application—a portal for online referendums on topics appropriate for democratic decision-making. To date, almost 2 million citizens have cast more than 90 million votes on over 3,000 issues through the platform. The purpose of this structure is to increase the opportunity for citizen engagement and involvement with their city’s major investments.
  • Manage the disruption ‘cost’. Major urban projects cannot be delivered without disrupting daily life. While citizens can be enrolled to accept the disruption as a necessary investment for a better outcome, equal attention needs to be given to managing the disruption ‘cost’ as to managing real expenditures. For example, MyStreets, a project to upgrade and enhance Moscow’s urban environment through reconstruction of streets and building façades, was disruptive to many citizens and commuters. However, through staging and swift execution, the disruption was minimized and the intended lifestyle improvements were quickly delivered to Muscovites and tourists who traverse newly styled pedestrian streets every day.
  • Invest in technology to optimize sequencing. Moscow’s cohesive vision for urban transformation has allowed early investments in technology to assist future delivery. One of the first projects completed was the centrally-controlled traffic management system which can monitor traffic conditions and urban movement through more than 2,000 traffic cameras and 160,000 CCTV cameras installed across the city. Data collected on current conditions, and knowledge of planned activities, allows real-time rerouting of traffic through the city’s dynamic signage. It also allowed identification and analysis of permanent traffic flow changes that could further ease disruptions like those created by the major construction projects.
Moscow traffic speed increased over 13% in 201.
  • Maximize utility of brownfield sites. A key reason the Moscow Central Circle (MCC), a new light-rail system integrated into the Moscow Metro, was completed in a record four-year period was the repurposing of existing brownfield networks which allowed the installation of modern technology on existing rail transport routes. The MCC’s 31 new stations will revitalize formerly abandoned industrial areas when its next stage of development builds an expected 300,000+ square meters of hotels, 250,000+ square meters of retail, and 200,000+ square meters of offices. This will give districts with historically poor infrastructure access a chance to develop at the same pace as the rest of the city.
  • Leverage PPPs to enhance basic services. To manage public cost and investment while delivering world-class infrastructure, municipalities need access to additional financing tools. Based on a structure that took an act of federal legislation, the MCC is an example of enhancing publicly developed foundations with private services. The tracks and land are owned by the Moscow Metro, with the rolling stock subcontracted to Russian Railways under a life cycle contract with a guaranteed buyback. The innovation is that Moscow Metro is licensing the development rights of its individual stations to private investors. Though all stations will exist under the same covenants, individual investors will assume their station’s construction cost and operational risk and rewards.
  • Create citizen-centric spaces. In addition to serving as open spaces, today’s city residents expect their parks to provide for entertainment and consumer services too. Many modern parks offer architectural features, charismatic vistas, and social, educational, and artistic spaces for all ages. When Zaryadye Park, an area of prime real estate next to the Kremlin was converted to parkland, an international contest resulted in 10 hectares being densely designed for this multi-function purpose. The outcome was two concert venues, restaurants, a parking garage, an entertainment complex, and a biological education center, all neatly camouflaged into a natural landscape that represents Russia’s ecological diversity.
  • Innovate where needed but not excessively. Moscow’s planners and builders did not shy away from technological innovation. The MCC used weldless joint rails to create a smoother and quieter system that is easier on riders and less disruptive to residents living near the railway tracks. The retrofit designs for Luzhniki Stadium were fully modeled in building information management (BIM)—a step which identified more than 100,000 conflict points before they could escalate into project delays. However, the project teams were also careful not to force innovation where it could create unnecessary risk and complications. Instead, they delivered the massive project portfolio by tactically melding innovations with highly-proficient execution of well-known and proven methods.

Tips for time management in college

Julie holkovic shares her advice for managing time as a busy college student.

One challenge that many students face when transitioning to a college schedule and course load is how to manage their time.  This is especially important in engineering since students, aside from after their first year, do not get summers off due to the co-op schedule.

University of Cincinnati civil engineering student Julie Holkovic provides helpful time management tips that she has learned through her five years at the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Julie Holkovic

Civil Engineering

[email protected]

University of Cincinnati civil engineering student, College of Engineering and Applied Science Ambassador, and member of Chi Omega sorority.

Time management is something that is so critical as an engineering student with the course load because it is necessary to have free time to unwind. Through my time at UC, I have been able to keep great grades while also being on the executive board of a sorority, being involved in a student organization and spending lots of time with friends.

Stay organized

Julie Holkovic was an executive board member of her sorority, a CEAS ambassador, and more during her time at UC. Photo/provided

The biggest piece of advice I have for time management is to keep track of everything in one place. Personally, I use my iPhone calendar for this, but Google calendar or different calendar apps are another option. I also utilize the Canvas to-do list on the mobile app. This feature lays out class assignments in chronological order by due date. This makes it easy to prioritize assignments and decide where to start when I sit down to do homework.

Along with keeping everything organized in a calendar, I also set aside a block of time for homework at least twice a week and find it very helpful. For me, I always do homework on Sundays and another day throughout the week depending on my schedule each semester. When I get overwhelmed, it is much easier to take homework one step at a time, beginning with what is due the soonest and going from there.

Having time to yourself is important. Keeping a calendar is helpful to give yourself more free time because it allows you to plan out your weeks in advance so you know when you need to set aside homework time. I also find it helpful to do assignments whenever I have a bit of free time because it allows me to keep my homework load at a minimum.

Utilize organizational tools

The biggest improvement in my time management recently has been getting an iPad. The reason this helped me is because everything I need for my classes is in one place. For instance, I take notes on my iPad, do homework on my iPad, and store class files on my iPad. Having everything in one place like this makes both homework and studying easier because it is all together and ensures I will not lose anything.

If you have an iPad, I love the note-taking app, Notability. If you do not have an iPad, that is no big deal. The main thing is to keep your assignments and schedule organized so you know where everything is and you can access it easily. How you choose to do that (whether it be an iPad, Google Calendar, a written planner) does not matter.

Go to class

My final piece of advice is to always go to class. If you skip class, it will take you so much longer to try to teach yourself what you missed instead of learning from your professors. If you spend one hour in class learning the material, it will save you time in the long run. Odds are, it will take you much longer to try and teach it to yourself. The most important aspects of time management improvement are organization, writing down a schedule, and keeping track of your homework. I wish you all the best of luck and go Bearcats!
