Family Drama Movie Review: A delectable dark comedy
Rating: ( 3.5 / 5).
Morality is a tough nut to crack. When overdone, the story feels preachy, and when under-explored, the film feels insensitive. Here’s Family Drama that doesn’t spend a moment pondering on the ‘correctness’ of the story, with the storyteller not also justifying the morbid actions of its miscreant characters. The situations the writing puts these characters in are dark, and yet, the mood is wickedly humorous. This balance, or should I say, this battle of tone, makes Family Drama , written by Shanmukha Prashant and Meher Tej, a thoroughly compelling film.
Directed by: Meher Tej
Starring: Suhas, Teja Kasarapu, Pooja Kiran, Anusha Nuthula
Streaming on: SonyLIV
The title is fitting, for the crooked dynamics of a family are central to this grotesque premise. When the stringent patriarch of the family threatens to oust his younger, unemployed son, Laxman (Teja Kasarapu) and his new wife, Yamini (Pooja Kiran), were he to fail to procure a job, the son has to come up with an idea to keep a roof over his head. With advice and help from his elder visibly wicked, stoner stepbrother, Rama ( Suhas ), Lakshman convinces his mother, who has been bearing the brunt of an abusive marriage, to poison the father into having him be paralysed forever. The father gets stripped of his motor actions and authority, but this is just the beginning of the film. This morbid opening serves as a preamble to this dark comedy and giving out anything more about the plot would hinder the viewing experience because this film is all about unpleasant surprises and hilarious violence.
The film has only six major characters and that helps keep the narrative tight. The need for secrecy and the threat of divulgence with horrifying ramifications, lingers even in the simplest conversations. In fact, much of the screenplay is about these characters trying to share their secrets despite knowing that doing so poses danger. When a film succeeds in creating tension out of the smallest actions, you can see it’s a product of effective writing. Barring Yamini and Rama’s wife Mahati (Anusha Nuthula), the outsiders, the rest of this family—the father, mother, and the two sons—are all bad people. Some are frightfully evil, the others, simply flawed. ALSO READ||Heads and Tales Movie Review: A light-hearted drama that plays to its strengths
I liked that the film blurs moral barriers. Throats are slit, innocents are murdered, and even the father’s helplessness is mocked. In fact, some of the funniest moments in the film have the father helplessly gnaw at the chaos unfolding in front of his eyes. The scene where Rama mocks his father’s ailment is, of course, insensitive, but watched in the context of this film, it makes you laugh. So is the scene where an uninvited guest finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time towards the film’s ending. You know that a cruel death is imminent, and the scene has an eerie vibe to it, but the idea itself is so outrageous and silly that you can't help but buy it.
Most of the film’s likeableness emanates from the presence and performance of Suhas, who is terrific in handling the unpredictability and volatility of his character. Backed by great writing, the Colour Photo -actor makes you root for a callous character. He can get cloying and yet be menacing. A shot where he appears in the darkness just after the characters make a discovery sends a chill down the spine. Is this film loud in places? Sure, but that’s how Suhas’ character is, and he sells it. Even when he is not on the screen, you are seeking him potentially eavesdropping on others. I wish I could praise the other actors as much, but they are functional at best. Teja Kasarapu as Lakshman is perhaps the weakest link in this film. Pooja Kiran and Anusha Nuthula, too, seem to merely exist in this madhouse. I liked though that all these characters get closure.
It’s rarely that you get a simple, contained, innovative Family Drama , and when it manages to double up as a dark comedy as well, it’s more than you can bargain for.

‘King’ Akkineni Nagarjuna’s ‘Greeku Veerudu’ has released across the world today. The movie has been directed by Dasaradh and Siva Prasad Reddy has produced it on Kamakshi Movies banner. The film has Nagarjuna and Nayanathara in the lead roles. Music has been composed by Thaman. Let us see how the film is.
Chandu (Nagarjuna) is a selfish NRI event manager. He believes in enjoying life, without any commitments and attachments. After the failure of an event, he is dragged to court by PR (Ashish Vidyardhi) and Chandu ends up with a massive fine on his hands.
At this point, he comes to know about his family fortune in India, which is about a 1000 Crores. Chandu does not have any ties with his relatives, so he decides to go to India and win them over for his selfish reasons. His grandfather Ramakrishna Prasad (Vishwanadh) welcomes him with open arms and grows fond of him.
On the journey to India, he runs into Sandhya (Nayanatara), who works for the ‘Make a Wish’ foundation. He develops feelings for her and Sandhya also reciprocates. To appease his family, Chandu requests Sandhya to act as his wife, to which she obliges.
But things unravel once Chandu’s motives become known. What will he do in these circumstances? Will he change as a person? Will he win back the love of his grandfather? That forms the story of ‘Greeku Veerudu’.
Plus Points :
Nagarjuna looks stylish and suave in the role of Chandu. His costumes are superb, as always. He has tried his hand at dances in this film and he has done a good job in the ‘I hate love stories’ song. Nayanathara looks quite beautiful in the film and her costumes are very nice. The screen chemistry between these two actors is quite nice to watch.
Veteran actor K. Vishwanadh has done a neat job in the film. The scenes between Nagarjuna and Vishwanadh have come out well. Character actress Sudha has a few vital scenes and she has done justice to her role.Kota Srinivasa Rao, Bannerjee and Ashish Vidhyardhi are ok. Brahmanandmam entertains in a few sequences.
A clean family drama is at the heart of this film and that will be appreciated by middle aged people and women. The first half is largely decent and just before the interval, the emotional quotient gets a sudden boost.
Towards the end, M.S.Narayana,Vennela Kishore and Brahmanandam succeed in creating a brief confusion comedy of sorts.
Minus Points : The pace of the film is quite slow. Screenplay is not upto the mark and the plot keeps wandering all over the place in the second half. There are some loopholes in the plot.
Graphics work is quite bad. The makers have gone in for matte shots to simulate USA and other foreign locales and these scenes are an eyesore. In fact, these bad visuals end up making people irritated and this spoils the overall viewing experience.
The second half has some bad comedy. The episode in the amusement park, where Nagarjuna tries to fulfil a young kid’s last dream, is quite badly executed. A mindless episode involving Brahmanandam and some dogs is best forgotten.
The marriage drama sequence between Nagarjuna and Nayanathara is quite silly.Venu Madhav, Srinivas Reddy and Dharamavarapu Subrahmanyam are wasted.
Technical Aspects :
Cinematography is quite bad and it is a major letdown. Editing could have been better in the second half. Thaman’s background music is ok. Dialogues are ok in a few places but they could have been better.
Dasaradh has succeeded in getting the emotional moments right. But he should have paid more attention to the comedy scenes and the romantic track.
Greeku Veerudu is a clean family drama. The film has some good emotional moments and fine performances from Nagarjuna, Nayanathara and Vishwanadh. Poor CG shots, slow pace and some cliched moments spoil the experience to a certain extent. Overall, this is a movie that will appeal more to older sections of the audience.

Hi Nanna Movie Review: A Family Drama Weaving Love And Resilience
While film boasts of stellar performances of those in lead, specific narrative paths may feel overtly dramatic..
Star Cast: Nani, Mrunal Thakur, Jayaram, Kiara Khanna, Angad Bedi
Genre: Drama, Romance
Director: Shouryuv
Writer: Shouryuv
Original Language: Telugu
Other Available Languages (Dubbed): Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam
Runtime: 2h 36m
Available on: Netflix
What’s Good: Nani, Mrunal Thakur, and Kiara Khanna deliver stellar performances, breathing life into the characters and dynamics of the heartwarming family drama. The on-screen chemistry between the lead actors creates delightful moments, while the ensemble cast, including Shruti Haasan, Nassar, Priyadarshi, Angad Bedi, Jayaram, and Hemayat Rahman, significantly enhances the film’s appeal.
What’s Bad: Occasional predictability and deliberate pacing may be observed, and specific narrative paths may feel dramatic and cinematic.
Loo Break: Consider taking a break around the 1-hour and 48-minute mark when an item song, ‘Odiyamma,’ featuring Shruti Hassan , unfolds. The song does not significantly contribute to the plot; remember that the narrative picks up pace swiftly after this musical interlude. Plan your restroom break accordingly to avoid missing crucial developments in the storyline.
Watch or Not?: “Hi, Nanna” is a compelling watch, especially for those who can establish a deep emotional connection with the main characters. If you appreciate love stories and romcoms enriched with heartache and a surprising twist leading to a happy ending, this film is tailored to your taste. However, if this genre doesn’t resonate, explore other cinematic options that align better with your preferences.
Language: Telugu
Available On: Netflix
Plot Summary:
“Hi Nanna” unfolds the captivating tale of Viraj, a dedicated single father portrayed by Nani, and his six-year-old daughter, Mahi, skillfully played by Kiara Khanna. As the narrative delicately navigates through picturesque settings and unexpected twists, it explores the complexities of love, marriage, and parenthood, ultimately delivering a cinematic journey filled with emotional depth.
Hi Nanna Movie Review: Script Analysis
The script of “Hi Nanna” might leave some viewers with a sense of déjà vu as it traverses familiar territory within the realm of family dramas. While the narrative unfolds with skillful storytelling techniques and propels the audience through unexpected twists, it may lack the distinctive “wow” factor that sets it apart from similar genres. The film’s reliance on certain old-world tropes and exploring well-trodden themes might contribute to a feeling of predictability, potentially leaving the audience wanting a more innovative and surprising narrative approach.
Despite this, the script successfully engages with emotional depth, delving into the complexities of love, resilience, and family dynamics. While it may not break new ground in terms of originality, the familiarity embedded in the storytelling could resonate with those who appreciate the comforting allure of traditional family narratives. Although not ground-breaking, the script provides a foundation for the stellar performances and emotional resonance that characterize “Hi Nanna.”
Hi Nanna Movie Review: Star Performance
Nani’s portrayal of Viraj in “Hi Nanna” is poignant, showcasing his emotional depth and acting prowess. From his character’s belief in love at first sight to embodying the dedicated father willing to go to great lengths for his daughter, Nani’s performance resonates with authenticity. This role stands out as one of his most compelling avatars, leaving a lingering emotional impact beyond the theater.
In the portrayal of Mahi, Nani’s character’s daughter, young Kiara Khanna, exhibits an adorable charm and displays impeccable acting prowess. Her performance left a lasting impression and surprised me with the depth of her abilities, showcasing tremendous potential for her future career. Kiara’s emotive connection resonates universally, leaving an indelible impact on almost every viewer.
In her role as Yashna, Mrunal Thakur exhibits an extraordinary performance, deftly manoeuvring through the intricate facets of her character with seamless finesse. Her contribution extends beyond mere acting, infusing an additional layer of profound depth into the narrative. The palpable on-screen chemistry she shares with Nani becomes a pivotal element, substantially enhancing the film’s overall emotional impact. Alongside Nani and the other accomplished ensemble cast members, Mrunal Thakur ‘s stellar performance collectively propels ‘Hi Nanna’ to the echelons of a poignant and sophisticated cinematic experience.
Hi Nanna Movie Review: Direction, Music
In his directorial debut, Shouryuv demonstrates a keen understanding of storytelling nuances in “Hi Nanna.” His ability to blend fate-driven elements with poignant narratives showcases a promising start to his filmmaking journey. Shouryuv’s careful pacing and clever storytelling techniques contribute to the film’s engaging experience, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the intricate threads of love, Resilience, and family dynamics.
Hesham Abdul Wahab’s musical brilliance in “Hi Nanna” is a captivating companion to the unfolding narrative. The haunting melody of ‘Idhe idhe’ resonates at crucial junctures, adding an undeniable emotional layer to the film. Wahab’s masterful incorporation of soothing sounds and strategic silences enriches the auditory experience, elevating the overall impact of the storytelling.
The synergy between Shouryuv’s direction and Hesham Abdul Wahab’s musical prowess creates a harmonious cinematic experience in “Hi Nanna.” Sanu John Varghese’s cinematography and Praveen Anthony’s editing further enhance the emotional depth of the narrative. Together, these artistic elements form a cohesive and resonant tapestry that elevates the film, making it a visual spectacle and a symphony of emotions woven into the fabric of the storytelling.
Hi Nanna Movie Review: The Last Word
“Hi Nanna” transcends expectations, providing a cinematic odyssey that intertwines heart and soul. While occasional predictability and pacing concerns emerge, the film’s emotional richness, outstanding performances, and artistic elements harmonize harmoniously, resulting in a captivating viewing experience. Shouryuv, Nani, Mrunal, and the entire cast collaboratively sculpted a splendid film that resonates profoundly with the audience, establishing it as a must-watch for those searching for an emotionally resonant family drama.

Family Star review: Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur’s family drama tests your patience
Family star review: parasuram petla’s vijay deverakonda, mrunal thakur-starrer defies logic in a plot that’s already wafer-thin..
Family Star review: When it was announced that Vijay Deverakonda was teaming up with director Parasuram Petla for the second time, many hoped they would recreate the magic of Geetha Govindam (2018). That film had its own issues, but Family Star struggles to make a mark or even entertain. The Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur-starrer tests your patience, with things only going downhill as the film progresses. (Also Read: Vijay Deverakonda calls his father his Family Star; shares unseen old pictures: ‘You are my strength, my hero’ )
Family Star story
Govardhan Rao ( Vijay ) carries a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders. He might have two older brothers (Raja Chembolu, Ravi Prakash) and a grandmother (Rohini Hattangadi) but he takes it upon himself to run the family, despite being the youngest. He is careful with the family’s finances, constantly reiterating how many kashtalu (problems) he has. When Indu (Mrunal) rents a portion of his home, she changes his life in more ways than one.
Family Star review
The plot of Family Star is so wafer-thin; you can see through it like one of the CGI dosas Govardhan makes for his nieces and nephews early on in the film. But even within the realm of what it is, Parasuram’s film defies logic, making it difficult to sit through. Even worse, it almost feels like Family Star was written by someone who doesn’t know what living a middle-class life is like, making the whole attempt feel caricaturish.
The biggest issue Family Star suffers from is a lack of emotional depth. Everything in the film feels superficial. You don’t feel anything for the lead characters, let alone the supporting ones, with no proper explanation for their motivations.
The supposedly responsible Govardhan often lets out his inner man-child, yet you never understand why those around him put up with any of it. Indu also hides something from Govardhan, but the big reveals (yes, plural) involving her character, come across as plain silly. And the less said about the friction between Govardhan and one of his brothers, the better.
The chemistry
While the core point of Family Star is Govardhan’s pursuit of giving his family a better life, a lot of the film also hinges on his love for Indu and vice-versa. And yet, Vijay and Mrunal hardly have any chemistry, except in a few scenes. That’s not their fault though because Parasuram doesn’t give them space to breathe or a chance to flourish.
He instead chooses to focus on scenes that are meant to be funny, but the jokes don’t really land. There’s an unnecessary scene where Govardhan is mistaken for a prostitute which is played for gags, but all it does is make you cringe. So does his behaviour at the work place. This is why it’s ironic that the infamous ‘iron ee vanchala enti’ (do I need to bend the iron) fight scene unintentionally make you laugh.
Vijay and Mrunal
The only thing Family Star has going for it is Vijay and Mrunal ’s performances. Have we seen better performances from Vijay? Sure. But he’s earnest in playing Govardhan. So much so, that the character’s idiosyncrasies get on your nerves because he plays them so well. He stands out in the film's few emotional scenes, where his character is allowed to feel the hurt, instead of just anger.
Mrunal looks stunning as Indu and tries to give her best, but her lip-sync is so off in the film, that it distracts you from her performance. She gets an emotional monologue at the end, but all you can see is how the words don’t match her lip movement.
In conclusion
Family Star could’ve been a simple, earnest film about a man taking up the responsibility of a massive family and finding love. We could’ve also gotten a film where the protagonist is content with his circumstances till he’s forced to face reality. Instead, you get a film that feels stretched, filled with ridiculous plot points and speeches that make you feel like you're in a time warp. Overall, it’s a shame that Vijay, Mrunal and a cast featuring names like Rohini, Jagapathi Babu, Vasuki and Abhinaya were wasted in a film as middling as this one.

Is Sita Ramam Based on a True Story?
By Aditi Rathi
Sita Ramam was one of the most successful Telugu movies of 2022. Starring Dulquer Salmaan as Lieutenant Ram, the film was released in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam. The romantic drama received primarily positive reviews, and its theme impressed the audience. While the film story has left fans spellbound, many wonder whether it is based on a true story.
Sita Ramam follows the story of a Pakistani student named Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna) who looks for Sita Mahalakshmi ( Mrunal Thakur ) to deliver a letter from her husband, Ram. This is followed by a flashback introducing Lieutenant Ram, an orphan who receives a mysterious letter from Sita during one of his missions. When he returns home, he finds Sita and the two fall in love with each other. However, their love story soon turns tragic when Ram has to go back on a mission.
Is Ram and Noor Jahan’s story real?
Ahead of the movie’s release in 2022, Hanu Raghavpudi revealed that Sita Ramam is a fictional story. However, he did seek inspiration from a real-life incident. During an interview with The Hindu , the director revealed that he found a book that featured an unopened inland letter. This is what inspired him to make the movie.
He said, “The letter I found in that book, in 2007, was from a mother to her son. I gathered that their family is from Vijayawada and the son is living in a hostel. She had enquired about his well-being and asked when he would be home.” The Sita Ramam director added, “It got me thinking, what if the contents of the letter had something crucial that could change the course of events?”
Reportedly, Rajkumar Kandamudi later introduced an army backdrop to the story. Dulquer Salmaan was soon locked in to play the lead role. Moreover, after several reconsiderations, Mrunal Thakur and Rashmika Mandanna were roped in for the roles of Sita and Afreen.
Always lookin' for what's cookin', Aditi is a fan of American sitcoms and Indian cinema. The combination is as quirky as she is. Apart from writing all day, you can catch her playing with her street dogs, painting, or cooking.

Our Mothers review – moving drama about aftermath of unspeakable war violence
Cezar Diaz’s sensitive and humane film looks back at one of the bloodiest periods of the Guatemalan civil war from the perspective of one damaged family
H ere is a thoughtful, restrained drama about one of the bloodiest periods during the long civil war in Guatemala , fought between US-backed rightwing generals and leftwing insurgents. In the 1980s, thousands of men, women and children were killed, mostly by soldiers. Our Mothers starts as a straightforward drama about families, decades later, still looking for relatives who disappeared in the massacres. But what emerges is a sensitive and moving portrait of female survivors – the clue is in the title.
In 2018, Ernesto (Armando Espitia) is a hard-working young government forensic investigator. Director Cesar Diaz follows Ernesto with a low-key documentary-like style as the young man goes about his job locating mass graves and exhuming bodies. One day, an indigenous woman, Nicolasa (Aurelia Caal), walks into his office with a familiar story: more than 30 years ago, soldiers tortured and killed the men in her farming village, then raped the women. Diaz handles the accounts of sexual violence with tremendous sensitivity, giving no more information than needed.
Nicolasa has a photograph of her husband posing with guerrillas who had visited their village shortly before the army raided. Ernesto thinks one of the men in the photo might be his father, a guerrilla who disappeared around this time. At home, his mother Cristina (Emma Dib), a paediatrician, clams up. The past is in the past; she doesn’t want to know. At her birthday party, old comrades and intellectuals sing leftist anthems. One friend is about to testify at the trial of a former soldier accused of rape, but Cristina has apparently refused to give evidence.
Between 1960 and 1996, more than 100,000 Guatemalan women were victims of rape. A more traditional “issue” drama would force a big confrontation between mother and son, but here it plays out in a lower key, in a humane film that feels deeply respectful towards the real-life survivors.

- Trivia In a recent interview with ET, Carell expressed his excitement for his upcoming reunion with his Office co-star. The actor admitted that he has yet to start filming Imaginary Friends, but is full of anticipation for the opportunity to work with Krasinski again saying, "Well, I haven't started working on the film with him yet, but I can't wait. I'm anticipating just joy and fun. I mean, he's the best, and he's a great director. I'll put him through his paces, you know? I'll make him work for it. I might be one of those persnickety actors that doesn't always agree, or won't come out of my trailer. You think you hired somebody that is a friend, but you got that wrong!"

Review: Meher Tej makes a stellar debut with Family Drama, the dark comedy of a family that comes unhinged when a bid is made to topple the abusive patriarch of the family. The way he fleshes out ...
Slim4Shady2 31 October 2021. Family Drama is a brilliant tale that deals with plenty of action and motivation. The type of crime drama is unseen in Telugu Cinema given how unlike the other movies, isn't here to preach any moral values. It talks about the scenario of a family who care less about human values in this materialistic world.
Family Drama: Directed by Meher Tej. With Teja Kasarapu, Pooja Kiran, Shruthi Meher, Anusha Nuthula. A dysfunctional family, a serial killer on the loose and when both the worlds meet, it topples many lives .
The situations the writing puts these characters in are dark, and yet, the mood is wickedly humorous. This balance, or should I say, this battle of tone, makes Family Drama, written by Shanmukha Prashant and Meher Tej, a thoroughly compelling film. Directed by: Meher Tej. Starring: Suhas, Teja Kasarapu, Pooja Kiran, Anusha Nuthula.

Disadvantages. Slow pace. Routine story. Lack of commercial elements. Violence and gory scenes. Rating Analysis. Meher Tej on debut came with a crime thriller titling it in a different manner as Family Drama.
