10 Things You Must Do to Be Successful in Business (and in Life)

Here are stories from several successful entrepreneurs who live a successful life as well..

father with son

There have been thousands of books written about what it takes to be successful in business, and a thousand more about achieving success in life as well. You can find another thousand articles on the web that discuss the topic, and a thousand more will be written tomorrow. With such a broad subject and with so many things that can play a role in making us happy, it can be difficult to boil it down to a short list of things that anyone can read and apply in their lives.

However, across those thousands of books and articles, among the countless legends and stories, you'll find some common themes woven throughout. You'll find principles about us as human beings that many of us think about but never try hard enough to achieve. You'll hear about ideals and decisions that we all wish we could aspire to but often fail to understand. Here are ten of those things you'll find among the tales of those who achieved success in business (and in life) - which ones do you currently have and which do you need to obtain?

1. Be Fearless

Want to know why becoming successful in a business venture is considered such a daunting feat by society? While there are obvious hurdles to face, one of the biggest challenges is in overcoming the fear of jumping into a business in the first place. Most people dream all day about launching a successful business while watching the clock tick at their mundane day jobs. The reason they never quit the security of a paycheck is because they are too scared by the unknown that comes with starting a business. If you want to separate yourself from that crowd, you need to learn how to manage your own fears. Don't worry, you're not alone. When I quit my job to start my business, I was making double my salary outside my day job than I was inside working my eight hour job. I still had that huge fear of failure.

However, this is only the beginning of the road for those who want to be truly successful in business. Overcoming your fears and getting started is noble, but the true tests of a fearless entrepreneur will be constant, from initiating a conversation at a networking mixer, asking for the sale on a major deal, severing ties with a partner who is causing harm to the venture, and perhaps the most frightening of all situations - watching a business fail (it happened to Henry Ford twice before he designed his famous assembly line!) One who can fail miserably and not be scared to dust themselves off and try again and again until they are successful is truly fearless.

2. Understand Finance

Now, people all the time will talk about how a well known business brand started at one time in someone's basement or garage, so much that it's become a romantic notion of sorts that going from rags-to-riches is what really identifies a true entrepreneur. The reality of most successful businesses ventures couldn't be farther from the truth - if you want to make it, you're going to need money. However, that doesn't necessarily mean you need to have a lot of it when you're just getting started, but more importantly understanding how finance works and how to use your money to grow in the smartest way.

Robert Kiyosaki is most famous for teaching the world about the importance in how financial literacy plays such a crucial role in the lives of successful entrepreneurs. Those who live from paycheck to paycheck are also those that fill their lives with liabilities - car and house payments, credit cards, and other materialistic things that cost them money. Those who are financially literate, however, understand the importance of building assets - things that make them money instead. Once you start having a positive asset column, you can then learn how to make even more money through investing. To be a successful entrepreneur you need to know how to take money and make it work for you.

3. Grow As A Leader

Once you harness your fears and make the leap to starting a business, you've already begun the journey of becoming a leader. As we'll discuss shortly, your ultimate success will have a lot to do with how you help others find their own. Many of us hold successful entrepreneurs on a pedestal much like football fans hold a star quarterback or wide receiver in high regard. However, there's always a team that these individuals lead that ultimately leads to their success. You must learn how to be a leader on some kind of level in order to motivate others to join you in your venture, believe in what you preach, or give you money for a product or service that you offer.

Just because you need to possess leadership qualities does not mean that everybody successful in business has to be the CEO, face of the company, or person "in charge". When Google started to really grow, the company's founders brought in a successful CEO in Eric Schmidt to come in and run their company - they were engineers, not CEOs. The ability to lead a team or lead the masses can sometimes come down to just having the right charisma and message to get the right people to do the things that need to be done in order for the entire thing to just work . A great soldier may be good at leading troops on the field, but not managing the entire war. An amazing product designer may also be a lousy salesperson. But a great leader will discover what they do best and where their weakness lies, and know who to put where in order to ensure that their company is one that achieves real success.

4. Use Your Leverage

One of the greatest challenges that will stand in the way of an entrepreneur from getting what they want is understanding what "to do" with the opportunities that fall in their laps along the way. This is where leverage becomes such an important concept that people going into business need to understand, and it takes a certain kind of mind to think "outside the box" in situations to find the value in a new relationship or circumstance. The same people who are too scared to quit their day jobs are also the same people who do not know how to leverage the assets and relationships in their life. A successful entrepreneur, on the other hand, is constantly finding ways to create profits and new opportunities each and every day.

The simple adage "when life hands you lemons, make lemonade" is a great example of using leverage to move your business forward. Many people will make the lemonade and drink it themselves. A true entrepreneur will make lemonade and sell it to those without lemons, and use the profits to buy more lemons or move into another business. While today a polarizing political figure, Donald Trump is a great example of an entrepreneur who time and time again used leverage to acquire crucial pieces of real estate or strike very lucrative business deals. Love him or hate him, his book The Art of The Deal is a great resource on how leverage can make someone mega successful.

5. Acquire Partners

We talked earlier about how becoming a leader is one of the most important qualities one needs to "move the chains" in the game of business. In order to achieve greatness as a leader, one must then have a team of individuals who believe in the mission in order to move forward. That's where assembling a great team of partners plays such an important role in any profitable business. Many start out alone and the wearer of many hats, but a business can only scale so far if there is only one source of energy, of inspiration, and of the actual sweat equity it takes to keep the lights on.

As we will see in understanding the meaning of success both in business and in life, a true "business owner" is one who does not need to be a part of the day-to-day operations in order for the business to run and stay profitable. The classic book " The E-Myth " is a great story of how many try (and fail) at running a business all by themselves. Instead, you need to take those leadership skills and motivate others to take their own specific skillsets and apply them together as a team for the greater good of the company. This doesn't just include employees, but also includes knowing who to shake hands with, how to create strategic partnerships, and how to use that leverage we previously discussed to convince others to have an interest in your venture. And once you reach a certain level of success, it will be an even greater feeling when you get to share it with all who helped make it possible.

6. Having the Right Attitude

So far we've discussed some of the most important concepts you need to understand in order to achieve success in business - but how do you exactly justify what is true success? Is it money, or sales, or the influence your actions have over the environment around you? Ultimately real success in business only matters if it also equates to success in life, and that all starts with having the right attitude towards it. Nobody cares about those who are rich but hate the world they live in. Everyone knows the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge, the jaded old man that had all the money in the world but did nothing but create misery for others.

To have a truly happy and fulfilling life, it's important to know what's really important and to develop values around what you can do each and every day to make that world a reality. Sure, many who start a business venture want to achieve a certain level of financial independence. But what does one do with those riches once they finally have them? Those with the attitude that having money means they can buy more "things" to surround themselves with in order to feel superior to others will never be successful in their life. The entrepreneurs who focus on how they can create wealth that can help others and solve problems have the right attitude needed to obtain true happiness and be seen in a positive light by their peers and partners, and are the true embodiment of the word "success".

7. Showing Gratitude

We live in a world that is changing each and every day, at a speed that any of us can really truly appreciate. Technology over the last 30-50 years has altered the way we communicate not only with our neighbor and loved ones but our business contacts around the world. The generations that have grown up with this technology often take it for granted, never once stopping to "smell the roses" and to realize that they live in an amazing time in history and that much of what they have in their lives - everything from the electricity powering their lights, the cars that help them get to their next meeting, to their smartphones in their pockets are all things they should very much be thankful for.

Those who are happy in both business and if life are those who are grateful for the world they live in. These are the people who make sure to thank the barista for their coffee in the mornings, who open the door for others, who actually listen to those who they have conversations with. Successful entrepreneurs should never forget all the people, places and things that have played a role in their lives that helped them get from their humble beginnings to where they are today. The next time you're flying on a plane, remember the comedian Louis CK's amazing observation that you're "sitting in a chair in the sky", and be grateful for all the wonderful things we get to experience every day.

8. Staying Healthy

Your money and success isn't going to do you any good if you're not around to use it - so why would you live your life so dangerously that you would sacrifice your health? What good is all the passion you have for your business dreams if you're not going to be around to see them come true? Too many of us get caught up in the game of life that we never think about the damage we all do to our bodies along the way. As entrepreneurs our days are so full of work and juggling projects that are lunch breaks become mere small breaks in the day where we shove fast food down our throats to get rid of our hunger. I personally inhale my food.

Our nights turn into a time where we sometimes burn the candles at both ends, turning the stress of the day into an excuse to ease the pain with alcohol and drugs. While we worship the celebrities who died before their time, is that how we define success in life? Our obsession with money and material things makes us greedy and insecure of who we are and how others perceive us. Without our health, we can never truly achieve success. A leader needs to be strong, and we're not just talking about a lean body or muscles here - your mind has to be healthy in order to persevere through the day and not only achieve the success you're looking for, but to be able to enjoy it as well.

9. Keeping the Right Friends

We've discussed the importance of not going it alone along your path to building your business, and this same ideology applies to your personal success and happiness. What's the point of doing anything if you don't have special people in your life to share it with. No one wants to be the Bruce Wayne of their city, the quack who owns the huge dining room table with no one to dine with.

People are social by nature, and it's important to have a life outside of those you work with. Your friends are people to share your experiences with, who will be there to high-five you with every victory and also pick you up after every failure. Make sure they are also the ones who have the same attitude, give back gratitude, and remain a positive force in your life. Those who feed off of negative energy are the ones you can bring the whole house crashing down around you.

10. The Importance of Family

We've discussed in detail why we become entrepreneurs in the first place, and the importance of deciding what goals we're trying to achieve. Most will begin the journey with dollar signs in their eyes, or seeking some level of power. Many times these things are personal and selfish, but one who is seeking true success in their lives will be doing so not just to share with their friends, but more importantly their families.

Not everyone has the greatest of childhoods, and no one is expected to share wealth with their siblings just because of blood. Not every entrepreneur has a soulmate, not will we all have children. It is important, however, to think about success beyond just the material or power one might ultimately yield. Real success lies in having a positive influence on those who you call family and those who will eventually remember, and hopefully continue, the legacy you leave behind.

10 Characteristics of Successful Entrepreneurs

Female entrepreneur taking a business call

  • 07 Jul 2020

Multiple factors go into starting a successful business venture, including a strong concept and initial funding. But, perhaps the most important ingredient is the entrepreneur. These are individuals who must transform their ideas into a fully operational business.

If you’re thinking about launching your own venture, you might be wondering if you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur . But first, what’s an entrepreneur, and what do they do?

Access your free e-book today.

What Is Entrepreneurship?

While entrepreneurship is commonly thought of as the process of starting a business, there are several nuances to consider.

In the HBS Online course Entrepreneurship Essentials , entrepreneurship is defined as “the pursuit of opportunity beyond the resources currently controlled.” An opportunity can be a myriad of things, but the course describes it as "a proposed venture to sell a product or service for which customers are willing to pay more than the required investments and operating costs.”

Entrepreneurs —either as individuals or in teams—discover opportunities throughout their personal and professional lives. They form hypotheses on ways to deliver value to customers and perform structured tests to validate their ideas. This often involves recruiting teammates through networking and investing funds to determine how they’ll deliver a product or service at an acceptable cost.

Great entrepreneurs come from all walks of life. In Entrepreneurship Essentials, it’s noted that “there’s no single personality profile, and it’s important to pay attention to the entrepreneurial team, rather than focus on the individual.” And while that's true, there are certain characteristics and skills that are particularly important for entrepreneurs to have when starting and leading a venture.

Here are 10 characteristics shared by successful entrepreneurs.

10 Characteristics of Successful Entrepreneurs

1. Curiosity

Successful entrepreneurs have a distinct personality trait that sets them apart from other organizational leaders: a sense of curiosity. An entrepreneur's ability to remain curious allows them to continuously seek new opportunities. Rather than settling for what they think they know, entrepreneurs ask challenging questions and explore different avenues.

This is validated in the online course Entrepreneurship Essentials , where entrepreneurship is described as a “process of discovery." Without curiosity, entrepreneurs can’t achieve their main objective: discovering new opportunities.

The drive they have to continuously ask questions and challenge the status quo can lead them to valuable discoveries easily overlooked by other business professionals.

2. Willingness to Experiment

Along with curiosity, entrepreneurs require an understanding of structured experimentation, such as design thinking . With each new opportunity, an entrepreneur must run tests to determine if it’s worthwhile to pursue.

For example, if you have an idea for a new product or service that fulfills an underserved demand, you’ll have to ensure customers are willing to pay for it and it meets their needs . To do so, you’ll need to conduct thorough market research and run meaningful tests to validate your idea and determine its potential.

3. Adaptability

Entrepreneurship is an iterative process, and new challenges and opportunities present themselves at every turn. It’s nearly impossible to be prepared for every scenario, but successful business leaders must be adaptable.

This is especially true for entrepreneurs who need to evaluate situations and remain flexible to ensure their business keeps moving forward, no matter what unexpected changes occur.

4. Decisiveness

To be successful, an entrepreneur has to make difficult decisions and stand by them. As a leader, they’re responsible for guiding the trajectory of their business, including every aspect from funding and strategy to resource allocation.

Being decisive doesn’t always mean being correct. Entrepreneurs need the confidence to make challenging decisions and see them through to the end. If the outcome turns out to be less than favorable, the decision to take corrective action is just as important.

5. Self-Awareness

A great entrepreneur is aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Rather than letting shortcomings hold them back, they build well-rounded teams that complement their abilities.

In many cases, it’s the entrepreneurial team, rather than an individual, that drives a business venture toward success. When starting your own business, it’s critical to surround yourself with teammates who have complementary talents and contribute to a common goal.

6. Risk Tolerance

Entrepreneurship is often associated with risk. While it’s true that launching a venture requires an entrepreneur to take risks, they also need to take steps to minimize it.

While many things can go wrong when launching a new venture, many things can go right. According to Entrepreneurship Essentials , entrepreneurs who actively manage the relationship between risk and reward position their companies to “benefit from the upside.”

Successful entrepreneurs are comfortable with encountering some level of risk to reap the rewards of their efforts; however, their risk tolerance is tightly related to their efforts to mitigate it.

7. Comfort with Failure

In addition to risk-management and calculated decision-making , entrepreneurship requires a certain level of comfort with failure.

“Of startups that have more than one employee, 70 percent survive at least two years, half last at least five years, and a quarter last 15 years,” says Harvard Business School Professor William Sahlman in Entrepreneurship Essentials . “Even then, only a small fraction of the survivors get to be significant employers.”

The reasons for failure are vast and encompass everything from a lack of business scalability to low product-market fit . While many of these risks can be avoided, some are inevitable.

Despite this, entrepreneurs must prepare themselves for, and be comfortable with, failure. Rather than let fear hold them back, they maintain a positive attitude to allow the possibility of success to propel them forward.

8. Persistence

While many successful entrepreneurs are comfortable with the possibility of failing, it doesn’t mean they give up easily. Rather, they see failure as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Throughout the entrepreneurial process, many hypotheses turn out to be wrong, and some ventures fail altogether. Part of what makes an entrepreneur successful is their willingness to learn from mistakes, ask questions, and persist until they reach their goal.

9. Innovative Thinking

Innovation often goes hand-in-hand with entrepreneurship. While innovation in business can be defined as an idea that’s both novel and useful, it doesn’t always involve creating an entirely new product or service. Some of the most successful startups have taken existing products or services and drastically improved them to meet the changing needs of the market.

Although innovation doesn’t come naturally to every entrepreneur, it’s a type of strategic mindset that can be cultivated. By developing your problem-solving skills , you’ll be well-equipped to spot innovative opportunities and position your venture for success.

10. Long-Term Focus

Most people associate entrepreneurship with starting a business. While the early stages of launching a venture, such as securing funding , are critical to its success, the process doesn’t end once the business is operational.

According to Entrepreneurship Essentials , “it’s easy to start a business, but hard to grow a sustainable and substantial one. Some of the greatest opportunities in history were discovered well after a venture launched.”

Entrepreneurship is a long-term endeavor, and entrepreneurs must focus on the process from beginning to end to ensure long-term success.

Introduction

Market analysis, competition analysis, factors or costs, calculating the set up costs and the working capital, measurements, conclusions and recommendations, reference list.

The desire for one to employ him or herself is a dream that many people try to achieve in the early stages of life but how one can be his or her own boss depends on many factors. Starting up an own business is one of the few ways in which one can achieve this but creating a successful business requires a good combination of a good idea and the driving power to do it.

A successful business requires skills, experience, and ability to make a dream come true as most of the times it involves personal sacrifice particularly during the start up stage. When starting up a business it is necessary to conduct a feasibility study on how successful the business is likely to be under the existing conditions. The objective of this research is investigating how feasible and profitable is it to start a new business. The feasibility study involves among others the following:

The question that comes to one’s mind when starting a business is whether there is a sustainable market for the product or service you want to offer.

Before one starts a business there is need to investigate whether there is a sustainable market for the goods or services that one wants to offer by assessing the consumers of your products, how many they are and the form they want the product to be in, the price the customers might be willing to pay for your products and whether the market is a permanent one or a seasonal one and the existence of both supplementary and complementary products to your goods and services.

After assessing the above and deeming the results positive then you can move into the next step of investigating who your competitor will be in the market.

Satisfaction that you have a reliable market is just the first step in the business development process. After you are satisfied that a reliable market exists, the availability of the market and the possible rivals you are likely to face in the market becomes the next big issue. This is done by analyzing who the direct and indirect competitors are.

The direct competitors are those individuals selling similar products as yours. A deeper knowledge of what they offer, charge, what they do well, and what they are not and the existence of any gaps that you may use to woo customers on your side is very important. Indirect competitors are those other business players who deal with complimentary products to the goods and services you want to offer.

The importance of studying these indirect competitors is that they may be a distraction to your customer pool by offering cheaper complementary products and thus causing a shift from your products to their products thus the necessity. After you have done the above analysis and the playground seems comfortable the next question that comes into your mind is how affordable the enterprise is.

Among the worst mistakes that any business entrepreneur can make is underestimating the start up costs and the operating capital required to run the business until the break-even position is achieved. It is always important to make accurate estimates as sources of extra capital in future may be limited. For example if one wants to start a French beans importing business it is very important to make accurate estimates of the required capital both for starting up to the point where the business will break even.

Realistic forecasts boosts one’s confidence and the ability to meet own commitments. When you set the required costs straight it means you won’t require extra capital after the business has started and thus there are chances that the business may run successfully without shortages in the required running capital.

There are many types of costs that a business entrepreneur incurs in the process of starting a business and they include costs of sales, professional costs, administrative costs, transaction costs classified as either fixed or variable costs among others as indicated by Webber (n.d).

With the available cost on one side and the costs that may be incurred on one side, calculating the initial costs gives one a chance to consider the items which are of high necessity and giving them higher priorities compared to those lowly placed depending on the capital available. Accurate estimates reduce the gap between the real budget and the expected budget and thus placing the business in a comfortable position (Anon, 2009).

The working or operating capital is the amount of money needed to keep the business running. For a sustainable business one has to allocate enough working capital in order to ensure the business runs successfully. It is important to factor out the fixed and the variable costs so as to know the required capital.

Fixed Costs

Fixed costs are the fixed expenses the business has to incur irrespective of the sales made. The costs required when investing in the fixed assets such as the cost of machinery or the cost of land among others.

Machinery or plant costs: these are the costs required to buy the required machinery if the business demands one.

Land costs: these are costs of buying the piece of land or paying for the rent if you are leasing the land.

Stock costs: these are the costs required for buying the initial purchases which will be needed by the business.

Variable costs

These are the costs related to the delivery of one’s product or service. These costs usually relate to the activities going on within the business. They include;

Transaction costs: these are the costs which the business will incur during the negotiation process.

Administration costs: these are the costs which the business will have to incur when enquiring about any expertise information that may be required. Others include what the authority will charge you in order to issue you with a license allowing you to start the business.

Wages: the costs incurred when paying the workers or your own salary. Wages vary with the size of the business and the ongoing activities.

Costing and Pricing

When setting prices it is advisable for one to set prices which can cover the costs of production in addition to generating some profit. The business owner should take into consideration the costs which will be incurred during the start up and the running process so as to ensure the product set prices covers everything.

Other costs which should also be taken into consideration are the hidden costs (Garrison, Noreen & Brewer, 2006). Hidden costs are those costs which are incurred during the process of conducting the business such as the transportation cost or the transaction costs many people do not include them but to know the real business situation, it is always advisable to include them.

The involved costs will be measured in terms of dollars by measuring the expected costs and benefits and then estimating how long it will take to reach break even point. The break even point is that time when the costs are equal to the benefits and the business is neither incurring profits nor losses. It indicates the costs have all been covered and it is a very helpful point in knowing how long the business will take before it can cover all the costs so as to allocate enough running capital to the business (Holland, 1998).

Cost Benefit Analysis

Evaluating quantitatively whether to start the business:

The last step in doing a feasibility test involves calculating the costs and the benefits involved in what is referred to as cost benefit analysis. The method involves simply adding up the value of benefits and then dividing with the costs involved in order to know how long it should take before the business breaks even (Nas, 1996).

A business man is deciding whether to start a business of importing French beans from Africa. The following are the costs he is likely to incur:

Transport costs(road from the farmers to the airport)$500
Search costs$100
Storage costs$250
Negotiation costs$150
Transaction costs$1250
Plant and machinery$4000
Operating costs$500
Purchasing costs$1250
BENEFITS
Sales$10500

Pay back time: (8000/10500) = 0.7619048.

It will take approximately 9 months to reach the break even point.

From the above analysis we can summarize by indicating that the above business idea has got higher chances of succeeding. If the entrepreneur would like to reach break even point faster he should find ways of reducing transaction costs or search for more market opportunities in order to increase the revenue earned reducing the fraction further.

When starting a business, there are different types of cost that one must incur before the business can succeed. It is very important to calculate all the estimated costs that may be required in order to avoid surprises. Ensure you have enough capital to help you run the business until it has grown to fund for its own expenses. It is always advisable to talk with the people in the industry and enquire for as much information as important as it may be.

The support of the family is another vital factor that I can recommend for anyone starting the business so that incase of failure at least you may have somewhere to run to. Many people, as they start businesses, do not assess their emotional ability of dealing with some of the challenges that may come up during the start up stage and thus since there will always be the discouragements and the disappointments, prepare yourself psychologically for any outcome.

Shubham Kumar

Shubham Kumar

Walking on the path of entrepreneurship is not a cup of tea for everyone. It is a choice to take the difficult challenges to create a mark in society. It is a journey full of inevitable ups and downs to make this world a better place. Well, as it was said Rome was not built in a day, one can’t become a successful businessman overnight. Even if you are working hard succeeding as an entrepreneur is tough. You need business acumen and the right mix of skills especially dealing with people.

As per U.S SBA, 66% of startups fail within the first year of launch. What’s more, Entrepreneurs Organization says over 50% of startups fail within the first two years. So, it becomes essential for one to find how to become a successful businessman and operate business smoothly. So here are some tips to be a successful businessman.

16 Tips To Become A Successful Businessman

Don’t Be Afraid of Risks Ask for Advice Keep Moving Be Curious Your Team Is Everything Innovate, Innovate and Always Innovate Focus On Results and Not Reasons Know Your Customer Well Be a Leader Make Critics Your Friend Make Your Business and Work Your Worship Follow Basic Rules You Will Feel Burned-Out, Get Used to It Have a Vision Don’t Settle Challenge Yourself

Don’t Be Afraid of Risks

You have chosen to be an entrepreneur and one of the most exciting parts of being an entrepreneur is the thrill and exhilaration you get to feel if something works. Even if something doesn’t work, admit a mistake, learn and move on. Always encourage new ideas to flow experiment with them and then make it work for you.

Ask for Advice

Are you usually the smartest guy in the room? If so, you’re in the wrong room. If you will go deep into the life of successful entrepreneurs you will find that mentor-ship is a fact they all mention and is what enabled them to get where they are.

You can get advice from financial institutions, professionals and industry gurus, among others, but to be a successful businessman you have to seek advice before making major moves.

Keep Moving

If you don’t have a particular skill and knowledge, don’t wait or stop. Hire an employee or get a freelancer to get it done for you. You never know how much it can cost you to keep a task pending for later. It is good practice to keep the business going in any situation.

One habit every successful businessman follows is to read widely and frequently. Know what your peers are doing and how people have to make it big. The more knowledge you will be the more informed and quick the decision you can take.

Your Team Is Everything

If you were an employee once, you must have thought “It must be so nice to work from home , I wish I could do that!” Create a home-like environment for your employee. Talk and discuss with them. The more you will tell them, the more they will share. Inspire them.

Innovate, Innovate and Always Innovate

Innovation should be the core of your business. The only thing that keeps a company running in today’s time is innovation. It is what keeps you ahead of your competitors . Innovation doesn’t mean coming up with something new just for the sake of it but coming up with something which will help your customer with a greater result.

Focus On Results and Not Reasons

There are reasons and there are results, the only thing that matters for a great businessman is the results. Reasons are full of emotional biases and are often wrong. Rather than guiding your business on the backend of assumptions, build it on data.

Know Your Customer Well

You think you have a billion-dollar business idea and it took one year to build the product. Now you go to the market and find that nobody actually needs the product. So did you really build any product or startup? NO! First, know your customer and build what your customer wants . Try to give them the best experience in whatever way possible.

Be a Leader

Successful businessmen have to work with a team and take tough decisions on a day to day basis. You need to have confidence in all these because the team follows the leader. To become a successful entrepreneur, one must know the qualities of a good leader. Remember a good leader is someone who motivates others in every situation.

Make Critics Your Friend

Take as much feedback from as many people as you can about whatever idea you have to seek critical feedback. Ask them what's wrong. People don't like to complain or point out faults, but that's what will make your business stronger.

You don't have to agree with them or necessarily follow their suggestions . But the more feedback you have, the more information you’ll have to make the right decisions for your business.

Make Your Business and Work Your Worship

If you want to become a successful businessman, be passionate & strong about what you are doing. Either it's 100% in or 100% out. There is no middle ground, there never is. U.S SBA reports over 47% of startups to fail when owners rest on their laurels. Mark Zuckerberg goes to work daily as does Bill Gates of Microsoft, among other successful entrepreneurs. Why should you leave others to run the show?

Follow Basic Rules

Being a young entrepreneur doesn't exempt you from registering your business, keeping records and paying taxes. Following these simple rules now will save you from legal and administrative headaches later.

You Will Feel Burned-Out, Get Used to It

You never know when things are going to start coming at you that you can’t control. Somethings might backfire and you might lose all hope. There is so much uncertainty that at one point in time you might feel you have lost almost everything. One must have a strong will and should be hopeful no matter what the situation is.

Have a Vision

Know what change you want. With vision, you can think about your capabilities and resource. Being a businessman, not having a clear vision or goals is the most dangerous thing to business and to yourself too. To become a successful businessman, you must know what goals you have to achieve and what changes need to be done to achieve those goals.

Don’t Settle

As it is said, there is always room for improvement. A businessman always sees where things are going wrong and how they can be improved. No matter how good your business is going currently, one must look for opportunities to improve more.

Challenge Yourself

If you want to be a thriving as well as become a successful businessman, you will have to challenge yourself no matter what happens. No one else is going to push you, so it’s up to you to do it.

20 Must-Read MBA Essay Tips

Business essay tips

Business school admissions committees care about more than (just) your  GMAT scores and GPA —they want to know who you are and why you belong in their program . Your MBA essays are your best chance to sell the person behind the résumé. They should tie all the pieces of your business school application together and create a comprehensive picture of who you are, what you've done, and what you bring to the table.  Here's a roundup of our best MBA essay tips to keep in mind as you begin to write.

How to Write an Unforgettable B-School Essay

1. communicate that you are a proactive, can-do sort of person..

Business schools want leaders, not applicants content with following the herd.

2. Put yourself on ego-alert.

Stress what makes you unique, not what makes you number one.

3. Communicate specific reasons why you're great fit for each school.

Simply stating "I am the ideal candidate for your program" won't convince the admission committee to push you into the admit pile.

4. Bring passion to your writing.

Admissions officers want to know what excites you. And if you'll bring a similar enthusiasm to the classroom.

5. Break the mold.

Challenge perceptions with unexpected essays that say, "There's more to me than you think."

6. If you've taken an unorthodox path to business school, play it up.

Admissions officers appreciate risk-takers.

7. Talk about your gender, ethnicity, minority status or foreign background....

But only if it has affected your outlook or experiences.

8. Fill your essays with plenty of real-life examples.

Specific anecdotes and vivid details make a much greater impact than general claims and broad summaries.

9. Demonstrate a sense of humor or vulnerability.

You're a real person, and it's okay to show it!

BONUS: Don't Make These MBA Essay Mistakes

1. write about your high school glory days. .

Admissions committees don't care if you were editor of the yearbook or captain of the varsity team. They expect their candidates to have moved onto more current, professional achievements.

2. Submit essays that don't answer the questions.

An off-topic essay, or one that merely restates your résumé, will frustrate and bore the admissions committee. More importantly, it won't lead to any new insight about you.

Attend UNC's top-ranked online MBA program without putting your career on hold. See how.

3. Fill essays with industry jargon.

Construct your essays with only enough detail about your job to frame your story and make your point.

4. Reveal half-baked reasons for wanting the MBA.

Admissions officers favor applicants who have well-defined goals. However unsure you are about your future, it's critical that you demonstrate that you have a plan.

5. Exceed the recommended word limits.

This suggests you don't know how to follow directions, operate within constraints or organize your thoughts.

6. Submit an application full of typos and grammatical errors.

A sloppy application suggests a sloppy attitude.

7. Send one school an essay intended for another—or forget to change the school name when using the same essay for several applications.

Admissions committees are (understandably) insulted when they see another school's name or forms.

8. Make excuses.

If your undergraduate experience was one long party, be honest. Discuss how you've matured, both personally and professionally.

9. Be impersonal in the personal statement.

Many applicants avoid the personal like the plague. Instead of talking about how putting themselves through school lowered their GPA, they talk about the rising cost of tuition in America. Admissions officers want to know about YOU.

10. Make too many generalizations.

An essay full of generalizations is a giveaway that you don't have anything to say.

11. Write in a vacuum.

Make sure that each of your essays reinforce and build on the others to present a consistent and compelling representation of who you are, what you've done, and what you bring to the table.

How to Write an Introduction for a Business Essay

A business essay introduction sets the tone for the entire paper and captures the reader's attention. Here are some steps and tips to help you write an effective introduction for a business essay:

  • Understand the Purpose of the Introduction

Clearly understand the purpose of your essay. Are you providing an overview of a business concept, analyzing a case study, or arguing a specific point? Tailor your introduction accordingly.

  • Start with a Hook

Grab the reader's attention with a compelling hook. This could be a relevant quote, a surprising fact, a rhetorical question, or a thought-provoking statement. The goal is to make the reader want to continue reading.

  • Provide Context

After the hook, provide some background or context related to the topic of your essay. Help the reader understand the significance and relevance of the subject matter in the business world.

  • Thesis Statement

Clearly state your thesis or the main argument of your essay. This should be a concise and focused statement that outlines what the reader can expect from the rest of the essay. Make sure it is specific and reflects the purpose of your writing.

  • Outline the Scope

Briefly outline the main points or areas that your essay will cover. This gives the reader a roadmap of what to expect and helps them understand the structure of your essay.

  • Use Clear and Concise Language

Keep your introduction clear and concise. Avoid unnecessary jargon or complex language that might confuse the reader. Aim for clarity and precision.

  • Be Relevant

Ensure that every sentence in your introduction is directly related to the topic of your essay. Avoid going off on tangents or providing excessive information that doesn't contribute to the main points.

  • Consider the Tone

Choose a tone that is appropriate for your audience and the nature of your essay. Business essays can vary in tone, from formal and academic to more conversational, depending on the context.

Case Studies

A case study is an in-depth analysis of a specific business situation or problem. It involves extensive research and data analysis to provide recommendations.

Case studies often showcase the application of theory to real-world business scenarios.

In today's highly competitive business environment, it's essential for companies to have effective marketing strategies that can help increase sales and generate revenue. In this case study, we will examine how Company X, a leading retailer, was able to increase their sales through an innovative marketing approach.

Company X was facing tough competition from other retailers in the market. They needed to find a way to differentiate themselves and attract more customers. They decided to focus on their customer experience by offering personalized recommendations, exclusive discounts, and rewards programs. They also implemented a multi-channel marketing approach that utilized social media, email marketing, and targeted advertising.

Their efforts paid off as they saw a significant increase in customer engagement and sales. Their personalized recommendations and rewards program helped to build customer loyalty, while their multi-channel marketing approach helped them reach a wider audience.

Furthermore, Company X also used data analysis and optimization to continuously improve their marketing strategies. They tracked their marketing campaigns and analyzed the results to identify what worked and what didn't. This allowed them to adjust their approach and optimize their marketing spend.

In conclusion, Company X was able to increase their sales by implementing effective marketing strategies that focused on the customer experience, utilized a multi-channel approach, and used data analysis for optimization. Their success shows that with the right marketing approach, businesses can achieve their goals and stand out in a highly competitive market.

Research Papers

Research papers involve a more academic approach to business writing. They typically require an extensive literature review, data analysis, and original research.

Business research papers aim to contribute new knowledge to the field of business. These often involve a hypothesis or research question.

The relationship between employee satisfaction and company profitability has been widely studied and documented in academic literature. A number of studies have consistently shown a positive correlation between employee satisfaction and company profitability (Bockerman & Ilmakunnas, 2012; Saks, 2006). When employees are satisfied, they are more engaged, productive, and committed to the success of the company. This leads to increased profitability and a competitive advantage in the market.

Employee satisfaction also has a significant impact on reducing employee turnover and associated costs. Studies have shown that when employees are satisfied, they are less likely to leave their jobs, reducing recruitment and training costs for the company (Harter, Schmidt, & Hayes, 2002).

Moreover, employee satisfaction can lead to positive word-of-mouth advertising and increased customer satisfaction. Satisfied employees are more likely to provide excellent customer service, leading to increased customer loyalty and repeat business (Heskett, Sasser, & Schlesinger, 1997).

Therefore, it's essential for businesses to prioritize employee satisfaction by providing a positive work environment, opportunities for growth and development, fair compensation, and benefits. Businesses should also regularly assess employee satisfaction levels and address any issues promptly.

In conclusion, the evidence shows that employee satisfaction is a crucial factor in the success of a company. By prioritizing employee satisfaction, businesses can increase profitability, reduce turnover costs, and improve customer satisfaction. It's essential for businesses to invest in employee satisfaction and consider it a corporate social responsibility to gain a competitive advantage in the market and achieve long-term success.

Argumentative Essays

Argumentative business essays aim to persuade the reader to adopt a particular point of view or take a specific action. They present an argument and use evidence and logic to support their claims.

Argumentative essays can address various business topics such as management practices, ethical issues, or market trends.

Benefits of Telecommuting for Companies and Employees

Telecommuting, or working from home, has become increasingly popular in the business world in the United States and globally as well. While some employers are still skeptical about the effectiveness of telecommuting, there are many benefits to this work arrangement for both companies and employees.

One major benefit of telecommuting is increased productivity. Studies have shown that employees who work from home are often more productive than those who work in traditional office settings. This is likely due to a combination of factors, including fewer distractions, less time spent commuting, and greater flexibility in scheduling.

Another benefit of telecommuting is reduced overhead costs for companies. By allowing employees to work from home, companies can save money on office space, utilities, and other expenses. This can be especially beneficial for small businesses or startups that are operating on a tight budget.

Telecommuting also has benefits for employees. It can reduce stress and improve work-life balance by allowing employees to spend more time with their families and avoid long commutes. It can also be a valuable perk for attracting and retaining top talent, especially in industries where remote work is becoming increasingly common.

Of course, there are some potential downsides to telecommuting as well. For example, it can be more difficult to collaborate with colleagues and build strong relationships with coworkers when working remotely. Additionally, some employees may struggle with self-discipline and motivation when working from home.

Overall, however, the benefits of telecommuting for both companies and employees are clear. By embracing this work arrangement, businesses can increase productivity, reduce costs, and improve employee satisfaction and retention.

Comparative Essays

Comparative business essays compare and contrast two or more topics or ideas. They typically analyze the similarities and differences between the topics to evaluate their pros and cons.

Comparative essays can focus on various aspects such as products, companies, markets, or strategies.

Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are two of the biggest soft drink companies in the world. Both companies have been in competition for decades, and their marketing strategies have evolved over time. This comparative essay will analyze the marketing strategies of Coca-Cola and PepsiCo.

Coca-Cola is known for its classic marketing campaigns that focus on emotions and memories. One of their most famous campaigns is the "Share a Coke" campaign, where the company personalized its products with customers' names. This campaign helped Coca-Cola increase its sales and improve customer loyalty.

PepsiCo, on the other hand, is known for its focus on youth culture and celebrity endorsements. The company has collaborated with popular musicians and actors such as Beyoncé and Michael Jackson to promote its products. This marketing strategy has helped PepsiCo attract younger consumers and improve brand recognition.

When comparing the marketing strategies of Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, it is important to note that both companies have their strengths and weaknesses. While Coca-Cola's emotional marketing approach has helped it establish a strong brand identity, PepsiCo's focus on youth culture has helped it appeal to a wider audience.

In conclusion, the marketing strategies of Coca-Cola and PepsiCo differ significantly, but both companies have been successful in their own right. It is up to each company to determine which marketing approach works best for them and their target audience.

Choosing the appropriate essay type can help you in effectively conveying your message to the target audience.

How to Structure Your Business Essays

As you begin writing your business essay, it's important to structure it in a clear and organized way.

Here's a step-by-step guide with business essay samples to help you do just that:

Executive Summary

The executive summary is a brief overview of your entire essay. It should summarize your main points and highlight your recommendations.

This section should be written after completing the essay, as it gives a clear picture of what the essay covers.

Here is how you start a business essay sample:

This essay provides an in-depth analysis of the marketing strategies employed by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. The essay highlights the similarities and differences between the two companies' approaches to product development, distribution, and advertising. Based on the analysis, recommendations are made for how each company can improve their marketing strategies to better meet the needs of their target audience. The implementation plan outlines the steps necessary for each company to execute these recommendations successfully.

Introduction

The introduction sets the stage for the rest of the essay. It should introduce the topic, provide background information, and explain the purpose of the essay.

Here is a business essay introduction example:

In recent years, the concept of telecommuting has gained popularity as a means of increasing productivity and reducing costs for companies while providing flexibility for employees. This essay will explore the benefits of telecommuting for both companies and employees, including increased productivity, cost savings, and improved work-life balance. Additionally, the essay will discuss potential challenges associated with telecommuting and provide recommendations for successful implementation of a telecommuting program.

Industry Analysis

In this section, you'll conduct a thorough analysis of the industry in which the business operates. You should examine factors such as competition, market trends, and customer behavior.

Here is a sample industry analysis

An analysis of the soft drink industry reveals a highly competitive market dominated by two major players, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. Both companies have a strong global presence and compete fiercely for market share. Recent trends in the industry show a shift towards healthier beverage options, with consumers becoming increasingly health-conscious. This has led to a rise in demand for low-sugar and low-calorie alternatives, such as sparkling water and fruit-infused drinks. In addition, technological advancements in the industry have allowed for greater customization and personalization of products, with companies using data analytics to better understand consumer preferences and target their marketing efforts.

Key Issues or Problems

This section should identify the main issues or problems faced by the business. You should provide evidence to support your claims and analyze the impact of these issues.

Here is an example paragraph:

In recent years, the XYZ Corporation has faced several key issues that have impacted its bottom line. One of the main issues is increasing competition from new entrants in the market. This has led to a decrease in market share and reduced profit margins for the company. Additionally, there has been a shift in consumer preferences towards more environmentally-friendly products, which the company has been slow to adapt to. These issues have caused significant concern for stakeholders and highlight the need for the company to address these challenges in a timely manner.

Solutions or Recommendation

Here, you'll provide solutions or recommendations to address the issues identified in the previous section. Your solutions should be well-supported and feasible.

For instance:

To address the issues of low employee morale and high turnover rates, the company should consider implementing an employee engagement program. This could include regular employee feedback sessions, recognition and reward programs, and opportunities for career growth and development. By investing in their employees' well-being and growth, the company can create a more positive work environment and reduce turnover rates. Additionally, the company should consider implementing a mentorship program to provide guidance and support to new employees, which can also contribute to employee retention and overall job satisfaction.

Implementation Plan

For this part, you'll outline a plan for implementing the solutions or recommendations you've proposed. This is sort of a description of the business model you suggest.

This section should be detailed and include specific action steps.

For example:

The implementation plan for our proposed solutions will involve several key steps. Firstly, we will need to gather a team of experts to oversee the implementation process. This team will be responsible for coordinating with various departments within the company, such as global marketing and operations, to ensure that the plan is executed smoothly. Secondly, we will need to allocate the necessary resources, such as funding and manpower, to carry out the plan. Finally, we will need to establish a timeline with specific deadlines for each action step, so that we can track our progress and make adjustments as needed.

Finally, you'll wrap up your essay by summarizing your main points and reiterating your recommendations.

This section should be clear, concise, and impactful.

In conclusion, this essay has highlighted the importance of customer relationship management (CRM) systems in modern businesses. The analysis of industry trends and key issues facing businesses has shown that effective use of CRM can improve customer satisfaction, increase sales, and ultimately lead to a competitive advantage. Through the proposed solutions and implementation plan outlined in this essay, businesses can overcome the challenges of implementing a new CRM system and reap the benefits. It is recommended that businesses invest in CRM and continuously evaluate their usage to stay ahead of the competition in the ever-changing market.

By following this structure, your business essay will be well-organized, coherent, and easy to follow for your readers.

Do you want to be a successful businessman?

If you expect this to be a list of tips about marketing or why social media is so important, then think again. Instead, we will focus on the most important asset when it comes to becoming a successful businessman – you.

Often, a lack of knowledge or confidence lies at the root of failing at something in life. So, imagine the difference it will make if both of these areas are no longer an issue. Would this change your perspective and belief in your ability to become a success at pretty much anything?

Well, that is where these person-specific tips will change things for you.

I will take you through 15 simple points that will alter your perception of yourself. By doing this, it becomes easier to overcome personal obstacles or difficulties that have the potential to hold you back in business.

With this guide, you will not only find it easier to become a successful businessman, but a more successful person in general.

So, are you ready to become a success?

1. Make Grit Your Foundation

Finding that ‘inner grit’ will lie at the heart of your foundation as a successful businessman.

Grit evolves into determination and perseverance, which is essential in achieving success. Grit stops you admitting defeat as soon as things get tough. Furthermore, it pushes you onwards even when others have their reservations.

No businessman can be a success without having this grit. [1]

Look to your past where you showed this grit to understand its positive impact on what happened next. Since it worked before, it creates a strong pathway in your mind that grows as you conclude that grit achieves results.

Understand your own inner grit, which motivates you, which pushes you forward and inspires you to achieve your goals. Nourishing those inner strengths and gifts will enhance your own special asset, yourself.

2. Work to Reduce Your Fear

Fear can destroy everything, and not only your business. [2]

Fear cripples you. It changes your way of thinking. It challenges your ability to carry out the correct actions. It inhibits your intuition which is pivotal to your success. Besides, it stops you taking those calculated risks that can push you forward.

Take time to think about your fears and where they stem from. Often, it’s only an illusion or a sign of an incorrect belief or way of thinking.

Was it justified? Did it protect? Did it impede? Seek to both understand and rationalize your fears to dilute their power. As Richard Branson said in 2015, [3]

Overcoming fear is the first step to success for entrepreneurs.

Identify those fears and build your confidence in those areas even with small steps. The more confident you are, the less power fear has at its disposal.

Remember there is positive stress, that is the one that says, ‘Get up and go’ and then there is the other which holds you back. Use your get up and go motivator and work on dropping fear.

This guide can hep you conquer whatever fear you have:

How to Overcome Your Irrational Fears (That Stop You from Succeeding)

3. Visualize Your Future on a Daily Basis

Do you day-dream about your future? Visualization makes it easier to turn it into a reality.

But, avoid thinking about the house or luxurious vacation. Instead, be sensible and tangible with your visions. Also, define them as clearly as possible since that will make your visions more real.

Write down your visions or sketch them with the pathway that you wish to follow. Any successful businessman knows what they are doing, where they are going and how to get there thanks to visualizing it.

Take a look at this article and learn to visualize:

How to Become a Person Who Can Visualize Results

4. Get Honest with Yourself

Being honest with yourself is often not nice nor easy. Identifying areas where you’re weak in can be soul-destroying; but only if you allow it to affect you.

People who are successful accept that it’s impossible to be good at everything. They will either learn new skills or outsource to resolve the issue.

Set aside time to be hard on yourself. Note the areas where you accept that you’re lacking. Even ask others who know you for their input.

Remember, this isn’t a personal attack but to see where extra help can stop those weaker areas from hampering your career. Through this process, you’ll find your positive strengths too and know what you’re working with.

5. Be Willing to Absorb New Information

Nobody knows everything. Business evolves constantly, and so as information.

This isn’t about gaining qualifications. It’s about studying and understanding the field you work in. You learn new ideas, theories, or methods and reduce the chances of making costly mistakes.

Take time to learn from successful people you admire: read case studies that you find on City of Hype , identify common issues and see how others overcame them.

Learn to be a sponge that soaks up information that’s relevant, and then act upon it.

Embrace change or at least learn to like it. Change is something you can count on and is important for the dynamic businessman.

6. Be Prepared to Commit

Committing to yourself and your career is a long-term must. Even a businessman who appears to be an overnight success has put in both effort and work to get to that position.

Some struggle to achieve success because they find it difficult to commit to the process. They are anxious or fail to have the passion that is required for success.

Commit to yourself, your business and your family. You need to understand what you are doing this for and develop that grit; write it down and look at the reasons; be in it for the long road and not some quick fix which could be your undoing.

You need to know your goals and zero in on how to achieve them while being aware that this can take years and that’s nothing unusual.

Seeking motivation from those that are winning in their chosen fields can help as this can refresh the goal you have and keep it real.

7. Tackle Your Stress and Anxiety

Here’s something you may not have expected us to say. Get help!

A study carried out by the University of California states that 72% of entrepreneurs are affected by some mental health issue. From this, stress and anxiety play a significant role in these statistics. [4]

Realizing that business incorporates stress and anxiety lets you counteract it before it becomes a problem. While some stress is good, learning how to deal with it so it never undermines what you’re doing makes sense.

Seek out a stress expert or talk to a counselor who can help you face your stress in life and prevent it from bleeding over into your career.

If you’re not very good at asking for help, this article is useful for you:

Afraid to ask for Help? Change Your Outlook to Aim High!

8. Focus on Personal Growth Rather Than on Business

There is no successful businessman without personal growth. In fact, the stronger and more confident you are, the easier it will become.

Working on your character, your understanding of things or your weak points makes sense. Which parts are you unhappy about? Who can help with this? Realize you are never a finished product, and accept it.

Look at the earlier point regarding your weak areas and work on improving them.

Also, have a strong foundation for yourself by seeking ways to improve what you already have. The core of success is within you; it’s a case of helping it to emerge. Maximize your strengths and try to mentor someone. It may reignite your inner introspection and enable you to move forward with confidence.

9. Understand the Way in Which You Make Decisions

Do you act on impulse or do you procrastinate too much?

Coming to terms with how you make decisions tells you a lot about your personality. Over-thinking can mean a lack of confidence while impulsive decisions shows recklessness that increases the risk of making a mistake.

Study what successful businessmen say about their own decision-making . Understand their processes and what works for them to formulate your own approach. It may be uncomfortable at first but if it makes things smoother, then your confidence will grow.

10. Work on Your People Skills

If your people skills are inadequate, then life will be tough. After all, you have to deal with people at some point.

Poor skills results in damaged belief in you and an inability to trust. Poor people skills also cost businesses billions of dollars per year due to bad experiences with customer service.

You don’t need to be able to talk to everyone, but work on your posture, and how you project your voice. Consider faking your confidence until it becomes easier too. Look at where you did well and feel inspired as a result.

11. Become Involved in Networking

Being unable to network in any form will result in your business failing. As your people skills improve, so will your ability to network. Not networking affects your self-esteem and limits your business growth potential because the two go hand in hand.

If you lack in confidence, then start networking close to home and gauge the response. Move on to people who are perhaps not quite so close and also gauge their reaction.

Getting a positive reaction increases those positive vibes and networking will become easier, as will dealing with people in general.

Networking is a strange thing, the more you network the easier it becomes. Most successful businessmen have an easy style when networking and they do it without even thinking.

Networking also becomes a habit once you start a positive habit you want to practice early on.

12. Understand the Need to Sacrifice

To succeed, you must understand the need to sacrifice. This applies to your social life, time with hobbies, even having to drop salary to gain experience to then move forward.

Being unwilling to sacrifice indicates a lack of passion and commitment.

Look at areas of your life that are distractions. How could you reduce them to boost your career? Where is the wasted time and energy?

No successful businessman ever got there by only putting in 50%. You must put this near the top of your list of priorities.

Learn the concept of balance and understand that there is a time for everything. Don’t over sacrifice, instead learn to balance like a pro.

13. Plan Every Aspect of Your Life

Planning equates to structure, and you will not be successful without it. I mentioned how successful businessmen know where they are going as they have visualized it. Well, change this to planning and the rules are still the same.

Plan when you will sleep, plan when you will eat and plan the order in which things must be done. You can outsource your marketing while you sleep. If your day is quite regimental, then there is less room for mistakes. You know what needs to happen and when, so nothing should be a surprise.

This may sound boring, but it is effective in saving you time and helping you take advantage of opportunities as they arise.

14. Nourish Yourself

Giving your body the correct fuel to get it through the day will make a huge difference. Ignoring your nutritional needs has a negative impact on your energy levels and your ability to think. This results in an increased chance of making mistakes.

You must commit to having a shut-down time each day. Consider reducing artificial light in the evening to encourage better sleep. Some of the techniques you can use to help you relax include exercise, meditation , healthy eating, avoiding sugar and caffeine and actually making time to stop work to eat.

Creating a business is exciting stuff but you have to make time to rest, to eat and to have fun. Remember the idea of balance?

15. Have Time for Yourself.

It cannot be work, work and more work. Having time for yourself and doing things that you enjoy or find relaxing will play a key role.

You must force your mind into thinking about something else to prevent fatigue. You must have that cut off time where you go back to your life pre-business.

Note what you like to do, and how long it usually takes. Then, look at your planning schedule from earlier and see how it can all fit in. With perfect planning, it will be easier than you think.

The Bottom Line

You may have a number of areas to work on. You might also have the best business or career mapped out already. But if you’re lacking in these core areas, then you will burn out, lose motivation or even give up your goal soon.

These points will lead to the success you are looking for. By taking into account the above points, you could place yourself well ahead of the pack and the competition when it comes to business sense.

The Science of Strong Business Writing

  • Bill Birchard

how to be a successful businessman essay

Lessons from neurobiology

Brain scans are showing us in new detail exactly what entices readers. Scientists can see a group of midbrain neurons—the “reward circuit”—light up as people respond to everything from a simple metaphor to an unexpected story twist. The big takeaway? Whether you’re crafting an email to a colleague or an important report for the board, you can write in a way that delights readers on a primal level, releasing pleasure chemicals in their brains.

Bill Birchard is an author and writing coach who’s worked with many successful businesspeople. He’s drawn on that experience and his review of the scientific literature to identify eight features of satisfying writing: simplicity, specificity, surprise, stirring language, seductiveness, smart ideas, social content, and storytelling. In this article, he shares tips for using those eight S’s to captivate readers and help your message stick.

Strong writing skills are essential for anyone in business. You need them to effectively communicate with colleagues, employees, and bosses and to sell any ideas, products, or services you’re offering.

10 characteristics for becoming a successful entrepreneur

What is an entrepreneur?

The 4 types of entrepreneurs, what are the qualities of a successful entrepreneur, 5 common mistakes to avoid as an entrepreneur, improve your entrepreneurial skills, are you ready to build the future.

It all starts with an idea.

Starting a company can be intimidating. You may need to take out a loan, lease a commercial property, or hire staff. The details can feel overwhelming .

But if you’ve been working a 9–5 for years, you might feel like you’ve stopped growing. You’re grateful for the people who helped you grow because now you’re ready to use your skills in your own business venture. You know have entrepreneur characteristics and want to know where to start.

The right person will thrive in this environment. They have the entrepreneurial spirit necessary to make it happen and will feel more at peace running their own company than they ever would in an office job.

An entrepreneur is someone passionate and innovative who creates a new business. Their business doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel — your favorite neighborhood cafĂ© is a business, too — but it takes an entrepreneurial mindset to bring their ideas to life.

Entrepreneurship is all about pursuing opportunities. It’s about looking for areas to provide a service or a new product the public might need. It’s also about taking the initiative to bring your ideas to life.

For example, in the 1970s, Steve Jobs noticed computers were popular among hobbyists but inaccessible to the average consumer.  He saw an untapped market with huge potential — he just needed to create user-friendly products. From the Apple 1 computer to the iPhone, he did exactly that. His company became one of the most profitable businesses in the world .

At their core, entrepreneurs are individuals who start a business. But on a deeper level, they’re people who innovate. Someone who starts a business is comfortable with discomfort and pushing the limits of their comfort zone. They see challenges and think of creative ways to overcome them . They fill society with new ideas and keep refreshing the old ones.

When we think of an entrepreneur, we might think of big names like Henry Ford or Bill Gates. But you don’t have to fund a Fortune 500 company to walk in their shoes.

Entrepreneurs come in many forms, whether they yearn to be their own boss or disrupt the status quo. Here are some common types of self-starters you might run into:

1. The inventor

This person wants to create the next big thing. They see the big picture, imagine products or business ideas that don’t exist yet, and work to bring them into reality.

2. The small business owner

Small business entrepreneurs employ less than 500 workers. These people operate everything from small consultancies to popular local restaurants. They understand the value of hard work and leading a talented team of employees.

3. The online entrepreneur

Whether it’s a side hustle  or a full-time job, these entrepreneurs make the Internet work for them. They might sell products on Etsy, maintain a popular financial blog, or develop software to distribute online. But no matter what, they have a direct relationship with clients through their online business.

4. The home business owner

These people use their homes as their home base. A family plumbing business might use its home garage to store equipment. On the other hand, an artisan soap maker could use the basement as their production line. These people make their space work for them.

Female-Seamstresses-Working

Starting a new business comes with an inherent amount of risk . You can do everything right, but external events could lead to a negative outcome. While there’s no formula for entrepreneurship, there are good or bad entrepreneur characteristics.

Here are some skills you need to become a successful entrepreneur:

1. Discipline

The number one quality of an entrepreneur is self-discipline . You need to do the work — even when you don’t feel like it.

If you have a day job, this could mean working long hours . You'll need the self-motivation to wake up early or stay up late as you start your new venture.

2. Curiosity

The best entrepreneurs always want to learn more . They ask good questions and look for opportunities to grow themselves and their business. These people don’t dwell on what they think they know but instead, change their opinions when presented with new information.

Curiosity to learn is just part of how they approach the world.

Friends-Making-Art

3. Creativity

This is the spark that drives many successful startups. Creativity isn't just for creatives , it's a skill that everyone can cultivate. Entrepreneurs always look for creative ways to solve problems or deliver a service, often with limited resources.

They look in many different places for inspiration, and their creativity helps fuel their love for what they do . Find what gives you ideas and use it as your fuel. To cultivate this skill, lean on habits that support creativity. It could be music, meditation , or meeting new people.

4. Willingness to try things

As an entrepreneur, you’ll constantly be presented with new tasks that challenge your skillset. Resourcefulness goes hand-in-hand with experimentation and problem-solving. Be ready to get creative, think outside the box , and pull from your vast network, experiences, and skills to take on a challenge.

Prepare to watch your solution fail, too. It’s inevitable, and every failure is an opportunity to learn and improve on your ideas.

If you strategize well and outline metrics for tracking success, you can quickly make adjustments and find appropriate solutions. Show your product to a trusted group of friends, read market research to see if there’s adequate demand, and stay up-to-date on the latest industry news.

These strategies will help you take calculated risks while trying new things.

In the business world, you’re only as good as your word. Honesty and integrity are important traits of an entrepreneur. These personality traits will reap several benefits:

  • You will develop a reputation as a strong and honest communicator
  • Your employees will value your leadership
  • Clients will know you can deliver on your promises
  • People will be more willing to lend you money for your next idea
  • Your community will support you during tough times

6. Always have a plan

Successful businesses leave little up to chance. They look far into the future , with backup plans to adapt to unexpected events.

You should have a vision for your company 5–10 years from now . To bring that vision to life, you can use the SMART goal-setting method to set short and long-term business goals .

These are goals that are:

  • Specific: What is the exact outcome you’re hoping for?
  • Measurable: How will you know you achieved this outcome?
  • Achievable: Is it reasonable for you to expect to achieve this goal?
  • Realistic: Can you arrive at your goal with your current resources?
  • Time-Bound: Do you have a clear deadline for your goal?

Each goal should build on the last, bringing you closer to your vision and closer to reality. Also, remember that a lot can change over the years. You’re allowed to adjust your plan if needed.

7. Understanding the value of self-care

Great leaders understand that exhaustion and overwork are a recipe for disaster. They may have all the skills in the world. But, without proper wellness , they won’t be able to execute. Budgeting time for self-care will pay you back tenfold.

The same philosophy applies to your employees. Make sure they understand the value of their work and encourage them to rest when they need it. They will pay you back with a positive attitude and stronger work ethic.

8. Taking risks

Risk takers often do well as business leaders. But you should be clear on your approach, and have a backup plan ready to go should things go awry.

This is a characteristic of a good entrepreneur because business owners often need to go off the beaten path. This can be scary but entrepreneurs must set aside their fears and take the leap needed to make their vision come to life.

9. Adaptability

The world is constantly changing — and so is how we do business. Entrepreneurs have no shortage of unexpected challenges and surprise opportunities, so they must act quickly and efficiently.

This adaptability is what makes a successful business, and it’s particularly true for entrepreneurs with a Millennial workforce . Rather than trying to force templates that worked in the past, entrepreneurs must be flexible to changing norms like hybrid work models and offering better employee work-life balance .

10. Persistence after failure

Successful entrepreneurs understand that failure isn’t the end of the world. Instead, failure is a rehearsal for success. Persisting despite any roadblocks increases your confidence, conviction, creativity, and innovation.

If you fail, you learn lessons to apply to the next challenge and teach yourself you’re grittier than you thought. All that radical thinking may lead to radical results.

It’s easy to make mistakes if this is your first time launching a business, but maybe we can help you avoid a few. Here are some things to look out for:

1. Not sticking to your budget

It’s easy to get carried away when you’re starting out. Be careful not to blow your budget too quickly. Stick to the essentials for now, like hiring the right staff, investing in the right tools, and building out your client list. The rest will come later.

2. Making ill-advised hiring decisions

Your business will thrive or die based on who you hire. Choose your employees wisely. Look for people who share your entrepreneurial mindset and have experience working at a new business.

It’s also useful to find people who have different expertise than you to cover any of your blind spots. If you think you're team could use assistance in getting up to speed, you might want to think about providing them with business coaching .

3. Setting unachievable goals

Don’t expect to make the NASDAQ in your first year. Set achievable goals when you’re starting out. Stick the to SMART method we outlined above.

4. Forgetting to delegate

You hired great people. Use them! Many entrepreneurs don't know how to delegate to others or they're afraid to. Consider whether you need to own a task. You can't control everything so only keep the most important ones.

Assign tasks based on others' strengths, set clear expectations, and check in with them regularly. They’re your team and they will deliver.

5. Making decisions out of fear

Clear your head before making big decisions. Emotions like fear, anger, or frustration can cloud your judgment.

When you encounter a stressful situation, take a step back, be mindful of your feelings , and approach the problem later with a clear mind .

Businesswomen-Meeting-In-A-Modern-Studio

Modern leaders need an increasingly long list of managerial skills . Here’s what you should work on as you develop your business:

  • Persuasiveness
  • Problem-solving
  • Communication skills
  • Flexibility
  • Self-motivation
  • Active listening

You might have the seed of an idea — but now it’s time to water it.

With careful training, planning, and execution, you can watch your idea grow into a successful business. Before you know it, customers will be enjoying the fruits of your labor.

10 tips for becoming a successful entrepreneur.

Wilbert is the Founder and CEO of  Think Act Prosper , a global media and education company.

An entrepreneur is someone who comes up with ideas, products or services to solve problems for the world. The path of entrepreneurship is built differently for every individual, but all successful entrepreneurs need to be prepared for failure and criticism, and they should constantly be learning and improving themselves.

There is no secret recipe or holy grail to becoming a successful entrepreneur, but here are 10 tips to assist you on the journey ahead:

1. Develop a business plan.

A business plan materializes your ideas onto paper and helps you to envision how your business will be operated. In brief, your business plan should at least answer the following questions about your business:

‱ What is your product or service? What are your priorities?

‱ Where will you be operating your business? Where do you want to be in five years?

‱ When will your business operate?

‱ Why should people buy your product/service?

‱ Who is your target segment? Who is your competition?

‱ How will the day-to-day operations be run? How will you deal with unforeseen emergencies?

These are just a tiny sample of questions to start your brainstorming process. The more questions you can answer, the more clarity you have about running your business.

2. Be frugal.

Think twice before buying anything or signing a lease. To determine if the expenditure is a necessary and good investment, refer to your business plan and ask yourself how your purchase will contribute to the success of the business, as well as any additional costs you could be incurring, such as depreciation and maintenance costs. Always aim to do more with less , and look for ways to reduce costs, such as bartering with other companies.

3. Continuously educate yourself.

Be a voracious learner. You can attend live seminars or classes online. I also recommend reading books by a successful entrepreneur you admire. Even if they aren't in the same field as you, you could learn a lot from both their successes and failures. Observing how they solve problems can give you tips on resolving your quandaries.

4. Build a winning team.

Behind every successful business is a reliable and competent team. This can include engaging an online personal assistant or working with a skilled accountant. Considering sales are the lifeblood of every business, I recommend making your first hire someone who can facilitate revenue by either increasing sales or making the sales process more efficient. I also recommend recruiting people who can take charge of multiple things for greater efficiency.

The key is to recruit the best people to help you achieve your goals, but more importantly, people who share your vision. Every teammate might bring a different skill set to the table, but the entire team should always be on the same page about the company’s vision and values.

5. Find a mind-body-soul balance.

Make sure you eat healthily and find time to declutter your mind. Your personal wellness is as important as your company’s bottom line. Even if your office is at home, find ways to unplug from work and recharge by going for a walk or exercising to release some endorphins (your body’s natural feel-good chemical). Excessive stress is detrimental to your health. Remember that your business thrives only if you do.

6. Take advantage of free marketing tools.

Some free marketing tools such as Google My Business and social media can be used for marketing and promotion. Many businesses create Facebook peer groups to spread the word and interact with like-minded people.

A valuable lesson I learned was that having excellent marketing on a decent product or service is better than having little marketing on an excellent product or service. The more people who know of your company, the better. Moreover, this ties in with tip No. 2 about being frugal and doing more with less: If you can gain publicity for no cost, why not?

7. Find a mentor.

Having a mentor you can trust is a valuable asset. Whether you’re in a mastermind group or have stayed in touch with your former teachers or other business associates, guidance is always valuable. Work with someone who has climbed that very mountain you are trying to navigate to shorten your learning curve.

8. Don't be afraid of networking.

Don't be afraid to seek help. Most of us have contacts who can contribute to our success. I’m not saying you should call them up and immediately start pitching to them, but you can always meet them to catch up over coffee or a meal and see if there is any way that they’re able to help.

You could also start with LinkedIn, which was meant for business networking in the first place. A friendly greeting and introduction with no expectations of any outcome is all it takes to start a conversation with a stranger. It might seem unpleasant and awkward at first, but the more you do it, the easier it becomes. I believe your network is your net worth.

9. Be financially prepared.

Starting a business always costs more than anticipated. You can allocate part of your revenue into an emergency fund to prepare against unexpected financial emergencies. As a last resort, you might have to take loans or inject your own money into the business. However, always pinpoint the root cause of the financial problems and resolve them if they are within your scope of control.

10. Invest in insurance.

Risk management is a major part of an entrepreneur’s work. Every decision carries its own risk, some of which are completely unpredictable. No one will ever be able to predict what could happen tomorrow, so you should spare no expense to keep your business and property protected. I've observed many business owners who regret not purchasing insurance, only after misfortune strikes and their bill comes due. Consult an insurer to find out how to protect yourself and your business. Your future self will be thankful that you did.

How to Write a Business Essay: an Ultimate Guide

Avatar photo

Table of Contents

Writing an essay can be boring. A lot of essays are basically the same thing over and over again. You write an introduction, then you write your supporting paragraphs, and then you create a conclusion. Overall, the process is not a lot of fun, and you can often feel as though you are simply going through the motions for the sake of churning out extra work. But since you have to write an essay, it’s worth considering the many ways that you can make the process faster and easier. In this ultimate guide, we’ll discuss the best way to write a business essay so you can get through the process faster and with relatively little trouble.

A graphic of a man sitting behind a desk, writing, with the title text: "Business Essay Writing Guide"

It might seem obvious, but the first thing you need to do when you write an essay is to read the essay question. You need to be sure you understand each part of the essay question and how the parts of the question work together. You would be surprised how many students only glance at the question and then write a paper that only partially addresses the assignment. You don’t want to lose points because part of your paper isn’t on topic. If you find any parts of the paper that you don’t understand or that require explanation, be sure to contact your instructor for clarification before you start writing.

Read the essay rubric

These days, most essays have a grading rubric included with the question. A grading rubric is like a cheat sheet for writing your essay. When you review the essay rubric, you’ll see exactly how your instructor will grade your paper and what your instructor will be looking for. When you write your paper, you will therefore know exactly what to include and how to write about it in order to maximize your points—and you’ll also see what you can spend less time on because it won’t contribute to your overall grade.

Make friends with your library

Many students automatically turn to search engines like Google in order to research their papers, but this is not the most effective way to find high-quality business sources for your paper. Instead, take advantage of your library’s databases. Your college or university library will likely have dedicated business databases that collect high-quality academic articles on business topics. Using these resources in your paper will make your essay stronger and more effective, and it will put your paper on a solid academic footing.

Compile your sources before you write

Many students use the start-and-stop method to write their papers, composing a sentence or two and then stopping to look up more information in order to keep going. This, however, is an inefficient way to work. A better way is to read through your research sources before you start and copy into a separate file a series of quotations and facts that you might use in your paper, creating in-text citations and reference list entries for each before you start. Doing so will make sure that you don’t have to stop for research and have a ready bank of pre-cited material to work with as you write.

Outline before you write

Outlining is an important skill that will both save you time and improve the quality of your essay. Take time before you write to lay out your paper from beginning to end. Start with your thesis statement and carefully lay out the body paragraphs with a topic sentence, supporting details (including research, quotes, and citations ), and a closing paragraph . Plan your transitions to link paragraphs together. Any amount of outlining can be helpful, but the more effort that you put into outlining at this stage, the easier it will be to write your paper, and the less likely it will be that you get stuck in a tangent that goes nowhere or meander into a point that requires you to change your thesis and revise you whole essay.

Remember to revise and proofread

When you finish the draft of your paper, you aren’t done yet. The first draft is rarely the finished product. You should always set aside time to read your work back and to make revisions to make it clearer. You also need to carefully proofread for mechanical grammar, punctuation, and syntax issues to ensure that your paper is as close to perfect as possible. What Is a Startup Business Concept?

A startup business concept is essentially the seed from which an entire venture grows. The initial spark of inspiration sets the foundation for everything that follows. This concept typically arises from identifying a gap or inefficiency in the market or recognizing an unmet need or problem potential customers face. Entrepreneurs then conceptualize innovative solutions to address these challenges, whether a new product, service, or approach.

The concept defines the startup's unique value proposition, outlining what makes it stand out in a crowded marketplace. For example, a startup concept might involve developing a mobile app to streamline a tedious process, creating a sustainable alternative to an existing product, or offering a niche service tailored to a specific audience.

Once a startup concept is formulated, it undergoes refinement and validation through market research, feasibility studies, and prototyping. This stage involves gathering feedback from potential customers, testing assumptions, and assessing the concept's viability in the real world. Entrepreneurs analyze market trends, competitive landscape, and consumer preferences to fine-tune their concept and ensure it aligns with market demand.

Additionally, they evaluate the concept's scalability and potential for growth, considering factors such as market size, revenue potential, and scalability. Through this iterative process, the startup concept evolves into a robust business model that serves as the blueprint for the startup's operations, guiding decisions related to product development, marketing strategy, and resource allocation.

8 tips to craft a winning business essay for success

In this article, we will explore eight key tips that will guide you toward success in creating a winning business essay . From understanding the nuances of the subject matter to presenting your ideas with clarity and conviction, these tips will empower you to craft a remarkable piece of written work.

8 great tricks for writing a winning business essay

When it comes to writing a winning business essay, using effective strategies can make all the difference. By implementing the following eight tips, you can enhance your essay’s quality and increase the chances your business writing has a maximum impact on your target group of people.

Choose a topic

The first step in writing a great college assignment is choosing the right topic. Often students are given topics to work with, simplifying things as they only need to ensure that their content aligns with the subject and the project’s scope. When handed the freedom to choose, however, you have to make sure that your business topic is relevant, interesting, and narrow enough to be covered in the length indicated. For the best topic, review available evidence through preliminary research, ensuring that there are enough sources to support your writing.

Brainstorm and outline

Once you have understood what is expected, brainstorm ideas and create an outline. Outlining saves you time and ensures you stick to the topic. It includes your main points and allows you to gather evidence and examples for your essay. Write down what you can think of relating to the topic for a good outline.

You can develop these ideas further in readiness for the writing process through research. Sure, you will need to create a thesis statement to guide you with the outline. A thesis is a statement or two at the end of your opening paragraph, presenting your primary argument and telling readers what to expect from the writing.

Follow the right format

Use the conventional format to create your essay, opening with a good introduction before going into the body paragraphs. Only have one idea in each paragraph, explaining it in detail using evidence before moving to the next idea. Use transition phrases and sentences to tie your writing together.

Stick to the right note

Your tone of voice, when you write a business document, matters as it helps you establish and balance your brand. Experts indicate that business writing demands consistency across all written communications. It means creating a unique voice to maintain in all your documents, allowing audiences to identify with your material.

When prospects and potential clients view the material, they should instantly associate it with your product. It is ok if you need to learn how to create an outstanding paper; you can always hire a reliable service like EssayUSA to work on your task.

Get to the point quickly

There is no place for small talk in business writing. Readers will have limited time to consume your content; you cannot spend it going through unnecessary information. So, to create exceptional writing for business. Ensure that you get to the point as soon as possible. You don’t want to distract your readers before they get to listen to your main message.

Your safest bet is ensuring your content is scannable, allowing readers to find the most crucial information in your essay easily. If possible, include headings and subheadings in your writing, making sure the structure of your document is easily accessible to your readers.

Be clear and concise

One of the vital things you can do when writing a business document is to ensure clarity and conciseness. Experts recommend using plain language to write business papers. There is no need for lengthy and distracting paragraphs. You need to keep your writing short and clear, articulating your points in as few words as possible.

Expert writers also use specifics to highlight their points, avoiding being vague in their business writing. Always keep the goal of your writing in mind throughout the process.

Avoid clichés and jargon

Read and understand the instructions.

When writing a business essay for an academic project, there will be a set of instructions you are expected to follow. These indicate what the student will achieve within the project’s scope and outline elements like formatting, citations, length, and the number of sources. Before writing your assignment, ensure these guidelines are clear by reading them multiple times. Ask your professor to clarify elements that seem vague or complicated.

Crafting a winning business essay requires a combination of skill, knowledge, and creativity. By implementing the eight tips discussed in this article, you can create an impactful essay that will impress your professors, colleagues, or clients.

With practice, persistence, and dedication, you can achieve success in the world of business essay writing. So, start writing, and let your words inspire and captivate your readers.

how to be a successful businessman essay

I'm a millennial mom of 3, and I rely on my mom's financial assistance

  • I'm a millennial mom with three kids and my mom helps me out financially.

Insider Today

Although my dad has helped out over the years, my 64-year-old mother — a retiree and recent widow after my stepdad died in 2023 — supports me the most. Stating this makes me cringe. I feel immense shame over being in midlife and heavily reliant on my parents.

Without a doubt, my mom expected to be free of dependents decades ago. At 40, she was planning an early retirement . But here I am, 39, unable to save a cent, in need of her financial support. While she lives alone, my kids and I occupy her townhouse.

Although I pay rent to her, it is well below market rate , utilities and internet are included, and accommodations are made when I don't have enough to pay. And that's not all. Over the years, she has gifted me vehicles, loaned me money, and given me cash outright.

At one point, I felt like I was on a good financial path

At 19, with my mom and stepdad acting as guarantors and contributing a $35,000 deposit that I later paid back, I became a homeowner of a townhouse like the one I am in now. I was otherwise financially independent, worked three jobs, had a good chunk of money saved, and my life was planned out. It looked like I was headed in the right direction.

So, where did I go wrong? Simply put, several bad investments of different kinds — dead-end relationships, attempts at pursuing education, and career choices — led to my current state of financial affairs.

I got married in 2009 while I was in university, and after putting nearly $20,000 toward a degree — all of which came from a registered education savings plan set up by my mom — I dropped out of school to start a family. Five years and two kids later, my marriage ended.

After my divorce, I went back to school

We settled outside court and, with his parents' guidance, split the assets my parents had helped me acquire. We also shared the debt, including a sizable amount I was completely oblivious to. To this day, I am not entirely sure how so much shared debt was accrued , but I assume a large portion was my ex-husband's education expenses and purchases he put on credit cards. Ultimately, I was left without the place I had owned for 10 years, chasing minimum-wage jobs. I spontaneously decided to become a practical nurse to put myself in a better position.

After spending 18 months in full-time studies, acquiring additional specialized training, and working as a nurse, I was depleted. Not only was I feeling the effects of financial strain from the cost of school, but physical, mental, and ethical exhaustion had taken hold.

Still, I resolved to pursue further education. I switched to a focus on psychology instead of nursing to establish a career I was passionate about that aligned with my values and would allow me a better work-life balance. I was aware that I would be in it for the long haul.

Typically, to get a master's degree, a person will dedicate nearly seven years to their education: four years toward their bachelor's degree and two and a half years in a master's program. And that's only if they are taking a full course load. However, my course load has reflected my situation as a single mom; while other students typically enroll in five courses a semester, I have only taken three.

Another pregnancy made it hard to keep up, and I asked for help

I thought I could simultaneously pick up nursing shifts and study, but an unexpected pregnancy decimated the chances of that. Although I tried to find a job from home — a remote position where I could work around a new baby and fit into my already stretched schedule — I was unsuccessful. I was unemployed, my student loans were insufficient to live off, and the little resources I had dwindled away, leaving me reliant on borrowed money.

With inflation and the lack of other social support for parents in my position, after two years of staying at home with my youngest, I was drowning in debt . Luckily, I could still continue with school by signing up for remote education courses.

Typical expenditures such as vehicle repairs and maintenance, dental fees, vet bills, and costs associated with raising kids continued to drain my bank. Feeding, clothing, sheltering, and shuttling around growing kids all but obliterated my budget. I would rack up my two credit cards and then, as soon as I got my student loan, would pay them off. But the interest charges were astronomical, and I was doing a terrible job juggling it all.

I hit a breaking point one day, and after crying to my mom about my Visa debt, which was nearly $12,000, she offered to help me out. She loaned me money to pay off that debt and told me I could pay my rent when I received my next student loan payment.

Even though I feel embarrassed by my financial situation, I feel blessed. Not everyone has a family to back them like this. It seems no matter my age or what I need, my parents will come to my rescue, and I know I will do the same for my kids.

As I am set to graduate next summer, I am one step closer to accomplishing my long-term goal of obtaining a master's in counseling psychology. While this means at least two and a half years of graduate school and more money, it will allow me to help people how I've always wanted to. And this is all possible because I have the support of my family. Though it's embarrassing to acknowledge how much help I've had to ask for along the way, I hope one day, in my career, I will support others to pursue lives that bring them happiness.
