Definition of Biology:  

Biology is the natural science that studies living organisms. DNA is the building block of life. Cells are formed from the cascade of events that occur such as transcription and synthesis of proteins from which the cells are built from. Single cell organisms exist, but multicellular organisms have evolved over millions of years. These animals and plants can be classified into many categories and humans are one of these. Like all more advanced lifeforms, humans have a complex range of bodily functions to regulate them. Energy is generated from ingesting food  which is broken down by enzymes to release this form of energy. Plants on the other hand use the power of the sun to capture the energy using photosynthesis. 

Fungi are distinct to both animals and plants. They exist as both multicellular organisms and single cell organisms (yeast). Cell wall composition is different to plants and animals. They contain chitin, a hard substance also found in the hard exoskeleton of some insects. When people think of fungi, they will usually think of the multicellular mushrooms we commonly see and buy from supermarkets. There are three major groups of fungi. 

Multicellular filamentous moulds, macroscopic filamentous fungi often referred to as mushrooms, and single celled mircroscopic yeasts. The ability of single cell organisms to assemble into multicellular organisms is a key characteristic of some fungi.

NCI-Selected Sessions with DCB Involvement

April 7, 2024 (2:30 PM - 3:30 PM) Early-Onset Cancers from Etiology to Survivorship: Funding Opportunities, Resources, and Future Research Needs (NIH02) This session had representation from across NCI Divisions, Offices, and Centers. It provided an overview of the scientific problem and discussed research gaps in etiology, prevention, and survivorship for early-onset cancers. The presentations also shared relevant NCI notices of funding opportunities, activities, and resources related to early-onset cancers.  

April 7, 2024 (4:00 PM - 5:00 PM) Cancer Health Disparities Research Collaborations Across CRCHD and DCB (NIH03) In this session, program directors in DCB and the NCI Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) shared collaborative NCI cancer health disparities research programs, including Basic Research in Cancer Health Disparities funding opportunities , the Integrating Health Disparities into Immuno-Oncology (HDIO) program, and Administrative Supplements to Support Cancer Disparity Collaborative Research . 

April 8, 2024 (10:15 AM - 11:15 AM) NCI Funding Opportunities in Cancer Prevention and Interception (NIH04) In this session, program directors in DCB and the NCI Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP) shared an overview of NCI funding opportunities and programs in cancer prevention and interception agent development that will address existing gaps and challenges in prevention and interception research. They shared information about the Discovery and Development of Natural Products for Cancer Interception and Prevention (DDNP-CIP) , the Cancer Immunoprevention Network (CIP-Net) , and PREVENT . 

April 8, 2023 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) Review and Funding of Foundational Cancer Biology Research at NIH & NCI (NIH05) In this session, Dr. Dan Gallahan (DCB Director), Dr. Shannon Hughes (DCB Deputy Director), and Dr. Amy Rubenstein, (Chief of the Basic and Translational Cancer Review Branch within the NIH Center for Scientific Review) discussed current funding trends in foundational cancer biology research, new grants policies (including the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy ), and changes in peer review.

April 10, 2024 (10:15 AM - 11:15 AM) NCI Artificial Intelligence (AI) Programs and Resources for Advancing Cancer Research (NIH12) In this session, NCI program staff shared NCI funding opportunities, resources, and community activities that support the appropriate development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) in cancer research.

RASP poster presentations capture student research 

Third year Pharm.D. students in the Research and Scholarship in Pharmacy (RASP) pathway presented their research findings to peers, faculty and staff members of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy on April 17.  

“The RASP poster session remains a highlight of our academic calendar, showcasing the remarkable achievements of our students within the RASP pathway,” said Kathryn Morbitzer, Pharm.D., RASP program director and associate professor in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education. “This celebratory event not only highlights the culmination of over a year of dedicated research and innovation, but also marks a pivotal moment for our students as they prepare to present their findings on larger stages and pursue publication opportunities. It’s a joy to witness their growth and success.”  

RASP is a longitudinal, selective pathway within the Doctor of Pharmacy elective curriculum built around a mentored, in-depth, scholarly project. Each student frames an answerable question with a faculty mentor, generates and interprets relevant data and communicates their findings.   

“My time in RASP has tremendously impacted my pharmacy school experience,” said Luke Burton, Pharm.D. candidate, Class of 2025. “I have not only learned the fundamentals of research and what it means to be a pharmacist who participates in research, but I have learned how to collaborate with others and effectively communicate those results to peers, colleagues and patients.”  

Melissa Roverse, Pharm.D. candidate, Class of 2025, examined how the current system of assistance programs for blood cancer patients afford and maintain treatment on newer oral anticancer medications. “These medications have had a really profound impact on improving survival for many of these cancers, but due to their expense, a lot of patients rely on assistance programs to maintain consistent access to their medications,” she said. Her study will pilot methods to be used on a larger scale to answer whether these programs are doing enough and if current access to them is equitable.  

Students in the RASP pathway enroll in three elective courses during their second and third year of pharmacy school where they learn about the research process, gain skills through self-directed learning and conduct research with the School’s world-class faculty.   

“The RASP research experience gave me the opportunity to connect with faculty mentors to a much greater degree than I would have through other courses or extracurricular experiences,” said Emma Smits, Pharm.D. candidate, Class of 2025. Her research identified factors that influence the well-being of postdoctoral fellows in pharmacy programs and the findings will help inform the School’s initiatives to improve well-being among its community members.  

The poster presentations simulate what students would experience at a professional meeting and serve as an opportunity for students to share their project results and develop their presentation skills. Most students continue with their project in their fourth year and, after successfully submitting their research thesis, graduate with honors at commencement.   

“The knowledge and experience I have gained with RASP has truly helped me in all other aspects of my academic life,” said Margaux Meilhac, Pharm.D. candidate, Class of 2025. “I am more confident evaluating literature, writing scientific articles and optimizing experimental design. RASP is a unique opportunity for students, and I think everyone should consider seizing it.”

ECSC is The Eastern Colleges Science Conference, an association of primarily undergraduate colleges and universities. The main function of the organization is to stimulate interest in undergraduate research in the sciences and related fields and to provide a lively forum for the presentation of research papers. Students with their advisors may attend and students may present their research findings in platform or poster presentations as well as full length papers.
