ભારત એક તહેવારોનો દેશ છે. ભારત દેશમાં બધાજ ધાર્મિક, સામાજિક તથા રાષ્ટ્રીય તહેવારોની ઊજવણી ખૂબ જ ધામધૂમથી થાય છે. એમાં પણ દિવાળી ભારતના લોકોનો એક લોકપ્રિય તહેવાર છે. દિવાળીએ હિન્દુ ધર્મનો મુખ્ય તહેવાર છે.

દિવાળી ગુજરાતી મહિના પ્રમાણે આસો મહિનામાં આવે છે. આસો મહિનાનો છેલ્લો દિવસ એટલે અમાસ આસો મહિનાની અમાસના દિવસને દિવાળીના દિવસ તરીકે ઊજવવામાં આવે છે. દર વર્ષે ઑક્ટોબર અથવા નવેમ્બર મહિનામાં દિવાળીનો તહેવાર આવે છે.

વિક્રમ સંવતનો છેલ્લો દિવસ એટલે આસો વદ અમાસ અને એના બીજા દિવસ થી વિક્રમ સંવતનું નવું વર્ષ શરુ થાય છે. તેથી નવા વર્ષની ઉજવણી આનંદ અને ઉલ્લાસથી કરવામાં આવે છે. સમગ્ર દેશમાં દિવાળીનો તહેવાર ખૂબ જ ધામધૂમ થી ઊજવવામાં આવે છે.

રામાયણ અનુસાર ભગવાન શ્રી રામે રાવણનો વધ કરી અને 14 વર્ષનો વનવાસ વિતાવ્યા પછી દિવાળીના દિવસે અયોધ્યા પરત ફર્યા. અયોધ્યા વાસીઓએ ભગવાન શ્રી રામના સ્વાગતમાં ઘેર ઘેર દિવા પ્રગટાવી રોશની કરી. અયોધ્યા વાસીઓએ ભગવાન શ્રી રામ, લક્ષ્મણ અને સીતાજીનું સ્વાગત ખૂબ જ ધામધૂમથી કર્યું.

દર વર્ષે આસો મહિનાની શરૂઆતથી જ દિવાળીની તૈયારીઓ શરુ થઇ જાય છે. લોકો ઘરની સાફસફાઈ કરે છે. લોકો ઘરની દીવાલો અને બારીબારણાં પર રંગરોગાન કરાવે છે. લોકો દિવાળી માટે નવા કપડાં, ફટાકડા, સુશોભનની વસ્તુઓ, નાસ્તા અને મીઠાઈઓ વગેરે જેવી વસ્તુઓની ખરીદી કરે છે.

ઘણા લોકો જાતજાતના નાસ્તા અને અલગ અલગ મીઠાઈઓ ઘરે પણ બનાવે છે. લોકો દિવાળીની ખરીદી કરવા માટે બજારમાં ઊમટી પડે છે. દિવાળીના દિવસોમાં બજારમાં લોકોની ભીડ જામ થઇ જાય છે. દિવાળીના દિવસોમાં લોકો મકાનો અને દુકાનો પર વીજળીના તોરણોથી રોશની કરે છે.

દિવાળીમાં મોટી મોટી ઇમારતો પણ રોશનીથી ઝળહળી ઊઠે છે. સ્ત્રીઓ ઘરના આંગણામાં દિવા પ્રગટાવે છે. સ્ત્રીઓ ઘરની બહાર સુંદર રંગોળી પણ બનાવે છે. રંગોળીની સાથે સાથે સાથિયા પણ કરે છે. અમુક લોકો આખા ઘરને રોશની કરીને શણગારે છે.

દિવાળીનો તહેવાર એટલે પાંચ દિવસનો તહેવાર. ધનતેરસ, કાળીચૌદસ, દિવાળી, બેસતુ વર્ષ અને ભાઈબીજ. ધનતેરસ ના દિવસે લોકો લક્ષ્મી પૂજન કરે છે. ધનતેરસે લોકો સોના ચાંદીના દાગીનાની ખરીદીને શુભ માને છે. એટલે જ લોકો ધનતેરસ ના દિવસે સોના ચાંદીના દાગીના ખરીદે છે.

કાળીચૌદસના દિવસે કાલિકામાતાની, ભૈરવની, હનુમાનદાદાની તથા ઘંટાકર્ણ મહાવીર ભગવાનની પૂજા થાય છે. દિવાળીના દિવસે ચોપડા પૂજન કરે છે. ચોપડા પૂજન કરીને ફટાકડા પણ ફોડે છે. બેસતા વર્ષના દિવસે લોકો દેવમંદિરે દર્શન કરવા જાય છે. બેસતા વર્ષના દિવસે લોકો એકબીજાને “સાલમુબારક” કહે છે.

લોકો નવા વર્ષમાં વડીલોને પગે લાગી ને આશીર્વાદ લે છે. તેઓ પોતાના સગાંવહાલાંને નવા વર્ષની શુભેચ્છાઓ પાઠવે છે. બેસતા વર્ષના દિવસે નૂતન વર્ષાભિનંદન પાઠવવા માટે આવેલા સગાસંબંધીઓ અને મિત્રોને મીઠાઈ તથા અન્ય વાનગીઓ ખવડાવવામાં આવેછે. દિવાળીમાં ખાવાની વાનગીઓમાં મઠિયા અને સુંવાળી ખૂબ જ પ્રખ્યાત છે.

ભાઈબીજના દિવસે ભાઈ બહેનના ઘરે જાય છે. બહેન ભાઈનું ભાવતું ભોજન જમાડે છે. અને ભાઈ બહેનને યથાશક્તિ પ્રમાણે ભેટ આપે છે. દિવાળીમાં આપણે કોઈની સાથે મનદુઃખ થયું હોય તો પણ આપણે તે ભૂલી જઈને નૂતન વર્ષની શુભેચ્છાઓ પાઠવવી જોઈએ. દિવાળી એ અંધકારને દૂર કરીને પ્રકાશ ફેલાવવાનો તહેવાર છે.

દિવાળીએ નાના બાળકોનો પ્રિય તહેવાર હોય છે. બાળકો દિવાળીની આતુરતાથી રાહ જોતા હોય છે. શાળાઓમાં પણ દિવાળીની રજાઓ આપવામાં આવે છે. બાળકોને દિવાળીમાં નવા નવા કપડાં પહેરવાની મજા પડી જાય છે. બાળકોને ફટાકડા ફોડવાની પણ ખૂબ મજા આવે છે. આમ, દિવાળીમાં બાળકો આનંદ આનંદ માં આવી જાય છે.

વિશ્વની પ્રત્યેક પ્રજા કોઇને કોઇ પ્રકારના ઉત્સવો ઉજવીને જીવનમાં ઉત્સાહ અને પ્રેરણાનું સિંચન કરતી હોય છે વર્ષ દરમિયાન એક હજાર જેટલા ઉત્સો થાય છે. જેમાંથી ઘણાં ઉત્સવો વહેતા સમયની સાથે પોતાનો પ્રભાવ ગુમાવી બેઠા છે. જયારે ઘણા ઉત્સવો હજી ૫ણ જીવંત છે. જેમાં ભારતીય સંસ્કૃતિના દર્શન થાય છે.આ બધા જ ઉત્સવોમાં સૌથી વધુ પ્રભાવશાળી ઉત્સવ છે દિવાળી.

દિવાળી એટલે ઝગમગતાં દિવડાઓનો ઉત્સવ. આ ઉત્સવ સંસ્કૃતમાં ‘દિપાવલી’ અને પ્રાકૃતમાં ‘દિવાલિયા’ નામે જાણીતો છે. દિવાળીએ ભારતનો અતિ પ્રાચીન ઉત્સવ ગણાય છે. પ્રારંભમાં આ ઉત્સવ ઋતુ ઉત્સવના રૂ૫માં હતો ૫છી સિધુ સંસ્કૃતિના યુગમાં આ ઉત્સવ નેસર્ગિકરૂપે ઉજવાતો હતો. ૫છી સમય જતાં એ કૃષિ ઉત્સવ તરીકે ઉજવાતો થયો ત્યાર૫છી એણે લોકઉત્સવનું રૂપ ઘારણ કર્યુ.

દિવાળીનો ઉત્સવ વાઘબારસ, ધનતેરસ, કાળી ચૌદસ, દિવાળી, બેસતુ વર્ષ અને ભાઇબીજ એમ છ દિવસ સુઘી ચાલતો તહેવાર છે.

દિવાળી આવે એ ૫હેલાં જ લોકો પોતાના ઘરની સાફ-સફાઇ કરી દે છે. જુની વસ્તુઓ કાઢીને નવી વસ્તુઓ વસાવે છે. નવા ક૫ડાં ખરીદે છે. બહારગામ રહેતાં લોકો દિવાળી આવતા પોતાના વતનમાં ફરે છે. દિવાળીએ પોતાના કટુંબ સાથે હળીમળીને ઉજવાતો ઉત્સવ છે. નાના-મોટા સૌ ભેગા મળીને આ ઉત્સવ મનાવે છે. ફટાકડા ફોડે છે. રોકેટ છોડે છે. વગેરે દ્વારા સૌ આનંદ મેળવે છે.

દિવાળીના તહેવારમાં ધનતેરસ ના દિવસે ધન(લક્ષ્મી)ની પૂજા કરવામાં આવે છે. દેવોના વૈધ ધન્વંતરી નો આ જન્મદિવસ ગણાય છે.  લોકો પોતાના ઘરમાં ધનની પૂજા કરે છે. દુકાનદારો દુકાનમાં રહેલા સાધનોની પૂજા કરે છે. અને નવીન ચો૫ડાથી નવા હિસાબની શરૂઆત કરે છે. આ દિવસે સ્ત્રીઓ વહેલી ઉઠીને વડના પાંદડાંના ૫ડિયા બનાવી તેમાં દીવા પ્રગટાવી નદીઓમાં તરતા મૂકે છે. આ દિવસે ઘણાં લોકો પિતૃઓનું શ્રાધ ૫ણ કરે છે. અને ગાયોના ધણની પૂજા કરવામાં આવે છે. ગાયોને રંગથી રંગવામાં ૫ણ આવે છે.

કાળી ચૌદસના દિવસે ગામડાઓમાં ખેડૂતો ઉકરડા ભરીને ખેતરમાં નાખે છે. શકિતના કે દેવીના પૂજકો તેમજ ભૂવાઓ ભૂતને બાકળા નાખવા જાય છે. ઘણા ભૂવા રાતવેળાના સ્મશાનમાં જઇને સાધના કરે છે. આ દિવસે આંખોમાં મેશ આંજવાનું મહત્વ ઘણું મોટું છે. એના માટે એક કહેવત જાણીતી છે.

‘કાળી ચાૈદસનો આંજયો ઇ નો જાય કોઇથી ગાજયો

 કાળી ચૌદસ ૫છી દિવાળી આવે છે. ત્યારે આ દિવસ પુરબહારમાં ખીલી ઉઠે છે. દિવાળીની સવારે આંગણા સાફ કરી રૂપાળી રંગબેરંગી રંગોળી પૂરાય છે. રાત્રે દીવા પ્રગટાવી ઘર ઝગમગતું કરાય છે. આ દિવસે બાળકો નવા ક૫ડાં ૫હેરી ફટાકડા ફોડે છે. મીઠાઇ ખાય છે. ઘરમાં ૫ણ અવનવી વાનગી આ દિવસે બનાવવામાં આવે છે. આખુ આકાશ આ દિવસે રોશની ભર્યુ લાગે છે. 

દિવાળી ૫છીનો દિવસ એટલે બેસતુ વર્ષ. આ દિવસે વહેલી સવારે ગામડાની સ્ત્રીઓ ઘરમાંથી અળસ કાઢે છે. હાથમાં કાળું ફૂટેલું હોલ્લુ કે તાવડીના કટકા લઇ ‘અળસ જાય ને લક્ષ્મી આવે’ એમ બોલતી બોલતી ઉકરડે નાખવા જાય છે આ દિવસે લોકો પોતાના સગાવહાલાઓને મળવા જાય છે તેમને નવા વર્ષની શુભકામના પાઠવે છે. એકબીજાને મોઢુ મીઠુ કરાવે છે.

નવાવર્ષ ૫છીનો બીજો દિવસ ભાઇબીજ તરીકે ઉજવાય છે. આ દિવસે યમરાજે પોતાની બહેન યમુનાને ત્યાં ભોજન કરેલુ એવી માન્યતા રહેલી છે. તેથી આ દિવસે ભાઇ તેની બહેનના ઘરે ભાવપૂર્વક ભોજન લે છેે. ભાઇ બહેનને ઉ૫હાર ૫ણ આપે છે. ૫છી ભેટે છે.

ભારતના ઉત્તર ભાગમાં આવેલા પંજાબ માટે દિવાળીનું ઘણું મહત્વ છે કારણ કે 1577માં આ દિવસે અમૃતસરમાં સુવર્ણ મંદિરનો પાયો નાખવામાં આવ્યો હતો. અને આ દિવસે શીખ ગુરુ હરગોવિંદ સિંહને જેલમાંથી મુક્ત કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા.

ભારતના દક્ષિણ ભાગમાં આવેલા રાજ્યો જેમ કે તમિલનાડુ, આંધ્રપ્રદેશ વગેરે દ્વાપરમાં કૃષ્ણ દ્વારા નરકાસુરને માર્યાની ખુશીમાં કૃષ્ણની પૂજા કરીને દિવાળી ઉજવે છે.

વિદેશમાં દિવાળીની પ્રકૃતિ

નેપાળ – ભારત સિવાય પાડોશી દેશ નેપાળમાં પણ દિવાળીનો તહેવાર ખૂબ જ ધામધૂમથી ઉજવવામાં આવે છે. આ દિવસે નેપાળના લોકો કૂતરાઓનું સન્માન કરીને તેમની પૂજા કરે છે. આ સિવાય તેઓ સાંજે દીવો પ્રગટાવે છે અને એકબીજાને મળવા તેમના ઘરે જાય છે.

મલેશિયા – મલેશિયામાં મોટી સંખ્યામાં હિન્દુઓને કારણે આ દિવસે સરકારી રજા આપવામાં આવે છે. લોકો પોતાના ઘરે પાર્ટીઓનું આયોજન કરે છે. જેમાં અન્ય હિન્દુ અને મલેશિયાના નાગરિકોનો સમાવેશ થાય છે.

શ્રીલંકા – આ ટાપુમાં રહેતા લોકો દિવાળીની સવારે ઉઠીને તેલથી સ્નાન કરે છે અને પૂજા માટે મંદિરમાં જાય છે. આ ઉપરાંત દિવાળી નિમિત્તે અહીં રમતો, ફટાકડા, ગાયન, નૃત્ય, ભોજન સમારંભ વગેરેનું આયોજન કરવામાં આવે છે.

આ બધા સિવાય આ તહેવાર અમેરિકા, ન્યુઝીલેન્ડ, મોરેશિયસ, સિંગાપોર, ફિજીમાં સ્થાયી થયેલા હિન્દુઓ દ્વારા ઉજવવામાં આવે છે.

દિવાળી પર ધ્યાનમાં રાખવા જેવી બાબતો

ખાસ કરીને લોકો દિવાળી પર ફટાકડા ફોડે છે, આ ફટાકડા ખૂબ જ ખતરનાક છે. મોજ-મસ્તીમાં હોવાને કારણે અનિચ્છનીય અકસ્માત થવાનું જોખમ રહેલું છે. તેથી તહેવારના તહેવારો દરમિયાન સલામતીનું પણ સંપૂર્ણ ધ્યાન રાખવું જોઈએ.

અતિશય ફટાકડા સળગાવવા

ઘણા જંગલી પ્રાણીઓ ફટાકડાના અવાજથી ખૂબ ડરે છે. આ ઉપરાંત વૃદ્ધો અને ગંભીર રોગોથી પીડિત દર્દીઓને પણ આ અવાજોના કારણે મુશ્કેલીનો સામનો કરવો પડે છે. આ સાથે દિવાળીના બીજા દિવસે પ્રદૂષણમાં પણ વધારો થયો છે.

The fire crackers burnt on this day are a complete put off. Burning crackers is said to be a ritual on Diwali. People burn thousands of crackers in the name of ritual on this day each year. This results in the increase in pollution levels in the atmosphere. The sky turns hazy and the consequences are harmful. It gives way to many health problems. This is especially unsafe for asthmatic patients, heart patients, pregnant women, elderly people and infants. It is difficult to step out on Diwali as well as days after the festival.

The burning of crackers does not only pollute the air but also causes noise pollution. It is particularly disturbing for sick and elderly people, small kids, students and animals.

Eco-Friendly Diwali: A Good Idea

It is high time we must behave as responsible citizens and stop burning crackers to celebrate Diwali or any other occasion for that matter. We must celebrate eco-friendly Diwali.

We must say no to crackers and advise those around us to do the same. Parents must take this as their responsibility to tell their kids about the negative repercussions of burning crackers. Kids must also be sensitized about the same in the schools. This will help in bringing down the fire works on Diwali.

Apart from the measures that people can take at their end, it is important to put a check on the sale of fire crackers. The government must intervene for the same. The production and sale of fire crackers must be banned or at least some restriction should be put on the same.

Diwali is a sacred festival. We must maintain its sanctity by celebrating it the right way. We should refrain from burning crackers owing to the harmful effects it has on the environment that ultimately impacts life on Earth.

Diwali is the most significant Hindu festival celebrated all over the India in the autumn season every year. The spiritual significance of this festival indicates the victory of light over darkness. It is a five days long festival celebrated by the people with huge preparations and rituals. It falls every year in the month of October or November. Many days ago of the festival, people start cleaning, renovating and decorating their homes and offices. They purchase new dresses, decorative things like diyas, lamps, candles, puja materials, statue of God and Goddess and eating things especially for Diwali.

People do worship of God Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi for getting wealth and prosperity in their life. They perform puja on main Diwali with lots of rituals. After puja, they get involved in the fireworks activities and then distribute gifts to each other among neighbors, family members, friends, offices, etc. People celebrate Dhanteras on first day, Naraka Chaturdasi on second day, Diwali on third day, Diwali Padva  (Govardhan Puja) on fourth day, and Bhai Dooj on fifth day of the festival. It becomes official holiday in many countries on the day of festival.

Celebration of Diwali with Family without Crackers

Diwali is my favorite festival of the year and I celebrate it with lots of enthusiasm with my family members and friends. Diwali is called as the festival of lights because we celebrate it by lighting lots of diyas and candles. It is a traditional and cultural festival celebrated by each and every Hindu person all over India and abroad. People decorate their houses with lots of candles and small clay oil lamps indicating the victory of good over evil.

Family members spend their most of the day time in preparing house (cleaning, decorating, etc) to welcome the festival with grand evening party. Neighbors, family members, and friends gets collected in the evening party and enjoy the party with lots of delicious Indian dishes, dance, music, etc all through the night. Houses look very attractive in white wash, candle lights and rangolis. High pitch music and fireworks makes the celebration more interesting.

People go to their home by taking off from their job, offices and other works; students also book their train around three months ago to easily go to their home on Diwali festival because everyone wants to celebrate this festival with their family members in the home town. People generally enjoy the festival by feasting, bursting crackers and enjoying the dance with family and friends.

However, it is prohibited by the doctors to got outside and enjoy firecrackers especially people suffering from lung or heart diseases, hypertension, diabetes, etc. Such people have to knock the doctor’s door because of consuming highly saturated food and sweets in high amount and lack of exercises and pollution caused by crackers in these days.

Significance of Diwali

Diwali festival is celebrated by the people with great revelry and lots of fun and frolic activities. It becomes the happiest holiday for Indian people in the year and celebrated with significant preparations. It is the festival of high significance for Indian people during which people clean their homes, decorate, do shopping, buy new things including gifts, kitchen utensils, appliances, cars, golden jewelry, etc and perform so many rituals.

There are many ancient stories, legends, and myths about celebrating this festival. Girls and women of the home do shopping and make rangolis in creative patterns on the floors near to the doors and walkways of home. There are little variations in the celebration of this festival according to the regional practices and rituals.

The spiritual significance of this festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and victory of good over evil. It is celebrated to honor the Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi and God of wisdom, Ganesha. Its religious significance varies according to the region all through the country. Somewhere, it is celebrated to honor the returning of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana to their home after long exile period of 14 years (according to Hindu epic Ramayana).

Some people celebrate it to remember the return of Pandavas to their kingdom after 12 years of Vanvas and one year of agyatavas (according to Hindu epic Mahabharata). It is also believed that it was started celebrating when Goddess Lakshmi was born after churning the ocean by the gods and demons. Diwali celebration also indicates the start of a new Hindu year in the west and some northern parts of India. It is celebrated by the people of Sikh religion to mark the Bandi Chhor Divas by lighting up the Golden Temple. It is celebrated by the people of Jain religion to mark the Nirvana attained by the Mahavira.

Pollution on Diwali

Together with the Diwali celebration, there is indirect increase in the environmental pollution all over the world because of the bursting of various types of firecrackers during this festival. Such firecrackers are very dangerous as they release toxic pollutants like sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and so many etc which gets intermingled into the air and causes variety of ailments like asthma, bronchitis, hypertension, etc. It affects the people of all age group however those people who already suffer any type of ailment. Together with the human beings, it also affects the lives of animals, birds and other living beings due to air and noise pollution.

Now-a-days, there is a campaign run by the government to celebrate pollution free Diwali all over the country. Schools and various organizations also organizes various demonstrations prior to the celebration to educate and aware students for pollution-free festival. Environment and pollution departments also do many efforts by publishing pollution free news in the various newspapers to aware people and curb noise and air pollution because of firecrackers. Bursting sound-emitting firecrackers has been banned by the Supreme Court especially during 10 pm to 6 am.

Air and water pollution is also caused by the decay of remnants of fireworks and deluge of garbage like empty bottles, papers used to light off rockets, gift wrappers, dried flowers, etc at the nook and corners of the city. We all should practice celebrating the pollution free Diwali every year in order to save and enjoy the natural beauty of environment forever.
