Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school's average GPA for its current students.

With a GPA of 4, Auburn requires you to be at the top of your class . You'll need nearly straight A's in all your classes to compete with other applicants. Furthermore, you should be taking hard classes - AP or IB courses - to show that college-level academics is a breeze.

If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 4, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate . This will help you compete effectively against other applicants who have higher GPAs than you.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Only a few schools require the SAT or ACT, but many consider your scores if you choose to submit them.

Auburn hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Otherwise, don't."

Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Auburn will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students. We therefore recommend that you consider taking the SAT or ACT, and doing well.

Auburn SAT Requirements

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school's average score.

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

Auburn has the Score Choice policy of "Highest Sitting."

This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. Of all the scores they receive, your application readers will consider the SAT score from your single highest test date (the sum of math, reading, and writing).

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and Auburn only considers your highest score on a single test date, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit your strongest score. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your SAT score is currently below a 1304, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it . You don't have much to lose, and you can potentially raise your score and significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Auburn ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, Auburn likely doesn't have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 27

The average ACT score at Auburn is 27. This score makes Auburn Moderately Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 24, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 30.

Even though Auburn likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 24 or below, you'll have a very hard time getting in, unless you have something else very impressive in your application. There are so many applicants scoring 27 and above that a 24 will look academically weak.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 27 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

We weren't able to find the school's exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send in to Auburn, so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 27.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

Auburn considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is moderately selective, strong academic performance will almost guarantee you admission . Scoring a 1370 SAT or a 30 ACT or above will nearly guarantee you admission. Because the school admits 43.7% of all applicants, being far above average raises the admission rate for you to nearly 100%.

If you can achieve a high SAT/ACT score, the rest of your application essentially doesn't matter. You still need to meet the rest of the application requirements, and your GPA shouldn't be too far off from the school average of 4. But you won't need dazzling extracurriculars and breathtaking letters of recommendation to get in. You can get in based on the merits of your score alone.

But if your score is a 1240 SAT or a 24 ACT and below, you have a good chance of being one of the unlucky few to be rejected.

How to apply to Auburn University for Fall 2024

Summer is over, and another application cycle has begun. The Fall 2024 application is officially open on our website and on the Common Application, and the first deadline is approaching. With September 15th right around the corner, we wanted to share some useful information and hopefully answer questions about the Fall 2024 admissions process.

1. When should I apply?

For Fall 2024, admission decisions will be released in rounds. There are 4 Early Action (EA) rounds this year. For scholarship consideration, you must apply and be accepted in one of the EA rounds. EA decisions are non-binding. This means that you do not have to commit to Auburn if you are accepted in an EA round. The Regular Decision deadline is February 1st. To have a complete application file, all required materials must also be received by the deadline.

2. What are we looking for in an application?

Admission to Auburn University is competitive. When you apply to Auburn, the Admissions staff carefully reviews your academic achievement, and each application is given personal consideration. As a land-grant institution, we understand and embrace our responsibility to serve the citizens of the state of Alabama. We focus on successful applicants who demonstrate the greatest potential for success and can live up to the Auburn Creed.

Middle 50% The ideal candidate will have achieved an academic GPA at or above our middle 50% GPA, demonstrated academic excellence and participated in challenging coursework during high school. As a guideline, the middle 50% profile for students enrolling in Fall 2022 was:

ACT: 23-30 (Alabama Resident)

ACT: 27-31 (Non-Resident)

SAT: 1160-1370 (Alabama Resident)

SAT: 1240-1370 (Non-Resident)

GPA: 3.85-4.31

Early Action – Preliminary Academic Review  We select our freshman class through an evaluation that includes a preliminary academic review of an applicant’s academic performance. Our initial review focuses on the rigor of classes, GPA, and test scores as well as a deeper dive into a whole student. We consider the mix of in-state and out-of-state students. As a land-grant institution, our mission is to serve Alabama residents. Academic factors in our review include:

  • ACT or SAT test scores for students applying with a test score. 
  • Your 9th-11th grade point average including weighted and unweighted. 
  • Grades earned in core curriculum courses. 
  • Planned 12th-grade courses. 
  • Pattern of grades over time. Marked improvement in academic performance as demonstrated by academic GPA and the quality of coursework completed or in progress. 
  • The number of college preparatory, Advanced, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), honors, gifted, and transferable college courses completed and achievement in those courses. 
  • Academic performance relative to other applicants at their high school and the learning opportunities available in their high school. 
  • Outstanding performance in one or more specific subject areas.
  • Academic area of interest. 

3. Do I need to send my ACT or SAT scores?

Auburn University is a test-preferred institution; we recommend that students take and submit official ACT and SAT scores for admissions. Freshman admission is based mainly on your high school courses, grades, and academic rigor. While we encourage students to submit standardized test scores, they are not required to be considered for admission or scholarships.

If you are applying with test scores, official test scores are required for a completed application. Official test scores must be submitted directly from the testing agency.

Auburn University School codes are:

Applicants with at least a 3.6 GPA and unable to test will be reviewed holistically through our test-optional pathway.

**Starting Fall 2024, Auburn University will accept the ACT Superscore Report. Auburn will calculate a superscore for the SAT and any individual score reports from ACT. Only your best testing result will be used for admissions and scholarship consideration.

***If your GPA is not on a 4-point weighted scale or on a 100 pt scale, Auburn will recalculate your GPA. If the recalculated GPA is less than a 3.6 GPA, official test scores will be required to receive an admissions decision.

5. Should I apply through the Auburn website or Common App?

You can submit your admissions application online at  auburn.edu/admissions  or through the  Common Application . Choose the application you’re most comfortable with; there’s no preference given to either application. The same information will be reviewed whether you apply through our website or through Common App. We highly encourage you to submit the application you start, as filling out both applications may delay your application from being processed. A completed application file includes a submitted admissions application, an application fee or fee waiver, your high school transcript and official ACT/SAT scores if applicable.

Auburn University is located in Auburn, Alabama and touts a total of 22,658 undergraduate students with a 19:1 student-to-faculty ratio. Although the university began as an all-male private liberal arts institution, it is now represented equally by men and women, and international students from 91 countries. It is ranked by USNews and World Report as #103 in National Universities, and #46 in National Public Universities. The acceptance rate 78%.

Auburn University Application Essay Prompts

The questions posed on the Auburn application are limited to 2000 characters, which should clock in at around 300 words, depending on the writing style. Although this may seem like a hefty amount at first, this limit is actually quite difficult to achieve when describing yourself as a viable candidate for admission. Being concise is crucial in college applications such as this one, as you are trying to simultaneously convey your personality to an admissions officer, gain their trust as a responsible student, and depict yourself as a forward-thinking go-getter.

Describe extracurricular activities, including leadership positions, in which you have participated.

This question seems to ask for a list, but as the application itself already asks for a resume, one should be careful when approaching it. Rather than list out every single extracurricular activity you have participated in, you should hone in on perhaps two or three that you have the most passion for, and in which you have spent the most time in. That way, your descriptions will be more informative than those given on your attached resume, helping to bring more depth to your character.

Doing so also gives the admissions readers a more holistic idea about what your typical week looks like and creates a realistic persona of who you are, rather than just a list of things that you do or did. It is advisable that you include activities in which you held leadership positions (noted in the prompt) to present yourself as a responsible student who is up for tasks not necessarily associated with school or participation.

For example, if involvement in Girl Scouts was a large part of your time, your response could resemble this:

  • When I joined my local Girl Scout troop in fourth grade, I found a different, refreshing outlet to explore and articulate my opinions. I progressed through the levels and received numerous badges and pins for my work. However, during my freshman year, a new program called the Girl Advisory Bureau was launched, and I applied to represent Girl Scouts throughout the Greater Los Angeles region. While representing the organization, I was given the opportunity to share one of my most personal stories regarding mental health. In front of a hundred adults, I divulged for the first time my battle with depression and which steps I took to work on not only my personal health but also raising awareness about such a sensitive yet crucial topic to the public. Through Girl Scouts, I fostered a sense of bravery as well as service in myself and utilized such skills to push for mental health awareness in my community as well as personal growth by opening up about my experiences. As a Girl Scout, I have expressed my opinions, worked with others, and further developed my confidence, courage, and character to speak my mind.

Make sure to address some sort of growth within this experience, and how you continue to learn and discover yourself through these sorts of activities. It is important to note that as you discuss these extracurriculars, you should phrase the response in a way that demonstrates that these activities were beneficial to your growth but that YOU were the one to ultimately drive your growth and understanding of the world and/or yourself.

Describe your employment experiences, including positions held, job responsibilities, and dates of employment.

This question should be approached in a similar fashion as the one above, except using employment experiences. If you have had employment experiences, this is a place in which you can not only divulge the dates of employment and job tasks, but also how you fit into the company and what you did to extend your reach past just your responsibilities. Express that you earned many new (or unexpected) skills associated with the job, and how that can apply to your future either professionally or personally.

For example, if you were a cashier at a clothing store:

  • When I worked at Forever 21 over the summer after my junior year, I had no idea that I would learn so much about the nuance of fashion marketing. As a sales representative, an exceptional amount of meticulousness and attention to detail were required to keep operations running smoothly. Floor sets were switched out almost once every two weeks, which involved working midnight shifts. Further, I employed methodical and calculated approaches to each table and mannequin, and collaborated with the sales team to design the most approachable looks for the products. Everything was done so that the customer would resonate with the aesthetics while never glimpsing the chaos behind the scenes of revamping a two-story clothing store. I was baffled by how at Forever 21, and in any business, employees actively promote and create the company brand.

Describe your reasons for selecting Auburn University and why you believe you will be successful at Auburn.

This is another question through which the admissions officers at Auburn want to gauge your interest. You can approach it similarly to other “Why us?” essays, so feel free to check out CollegeVine’s “Why Us” essay guide . Essentially, Auburn wants to understand how you would contribute to the university if accepted, as well as how much you care about being a part of the community. You could write about not only how their motto and/or values align with yours, but how the surrounding college town (as well as the student body) are a great fit for you.

Here is a brief example that highlights a specific opportunity at Auburn and ties it to a personal interest:

  • The feeling of being in the air is liberating to me. Whenever I am off the ground, my mind recalibrates, and I become a more patient and level-headed person. Auburn’s Aviation Program provides an opportunity for me to pursue and deepen my somewhat unorthodox interest that I otherwise would never had considered beforehand. As a history buff, I value the military affiliation that Auburn promotes, as its aviation program first took off during World War II and has maintained its strong connection to air force methods. In addition, I am ecstatic at the possibility to start flying during fall semesters, which allows for a head start that most other programs do not offer.

Provide other information about yourself that you would like considered in your application review, including any special circumstances which may have adversely affected your high school performance.

This is the place to let admissions officers know about any extenuating circumstances. Perhaps your grades took a dip one semester because you were ill for an extended amount of time. Perhaps you were experiencing some family issues that took away from your extracurricular activities. Perhaps you were financially unable to attend a certain internship or program. If you do respond, your explanations should be concise and emotions should not be depicted in detail. Simply explaining what was happening at the time and how it affected your performance will suffice. If there were no extenuating circumstances you experienced, feel free to either leave this section blank or write that there were none during your high school experience. You don’t need to respond in an essay or narrative style; simply summarize and be comprehensive.

What are your goals after college, and how do you think that your selected major at Auburn will help achieve those goals?

Essentially, Auburn University and its admissions officers want to know whether you have a goal that you are working towards, and how much thought you put into your future at the university. This is your opportunity to show your extensive research into Auburn’s majors and how your studies will apply to your future life, as well as why you think that major is unique from other majors offered at various colleges. Even if you want to study something that many other colleges and universities offer, you must explain in this section why you think that major program is the best fit for you. In your response, you must identify your goal and align it with specific opportunities at Auburn.

For example, if you were particularly interested in conducting research at Auburn, the university offers a fellowship program that is incredibly unique if you are in the College of Science and Mathematics. This fellowship program allows students to conduct part of their research off-campus and helps connect you to local mentors in case you want to extend your research into the summer and do not want to or are unable to stay on campus. This incredible opportunity is also equipped with funding!

Here’s an example:

  • My curious mind always wants to dig deeper for the truth, which I believe makes me suited for research. I am particularly interested in conducting biomedical research while studying biological sciences for a pre-medical track to not only continually learn about the nature of our bodies but also to extend that knowledge to help improve people’s lives, and Auburn is the perfect place for me to pursue that dream. I would flourish under the research fellowships available through the College of Science and Mathematics, as they provide guidelines on how to find mentors and raise funding creatively. At the same time, these fellowships still afford a great amount of leeway and freedom to express my creativity in attempting to understand the topic of my choice. Admission Requirements

Policies and procedures for admissions, application for admission, admission of transient graduate students, provisional admission, mcnair scholars, active military personnel, correspondence work unacceptable, student classifications, master's accelerator program.

Departments make admissions decisions based on the compatibility of the applicant’s goals with departmental resources, the availability of spaces for new students, and a holistic evaluation of the applicant’s potential for success in the program. Other considerations might typically include standardized test scores, grades and/or GPAs, letters of recommendation, writing samples, research or applied experience, and interviews.

To be considered for admission, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

The applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution or provide proof of equivalent training from a recognized academic institution outside the United States. Equivalency is determined by international evaluators in the Graduate School.

The applicant must be in good standing at the institution last attended.

The applicant must submit standardized examination scores (GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, and/or IELTS) if required for application to the degree program. Applicants with an earned doctorate (Professional, EdD, PhD) from an accredited institution whose instruction is in English may be exempted from this requirement.

The successful applicant normally will meet one of the following: a) a GPA of at least 2.75 on all undergraduate course work at an accredited United States institution in fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree; b) a GPA of at least 3.0 on all graduate course work at an accredited United States institution in fulfillment of the requirements for a graduate degree; or c) an acceptable GRE or GMAT score as determined by the program to which the applicant applies.

Applicants whose native language is not English must submit: 1) TOEFL scores of at least 550 on the written test (213 on the computer-based test); 2) 79 on the Internet Based Test with at least 16 in each section; 3) IELTS overall band score of at least 6.5; or 4) demonstrate English proficiency during an oral examination (interview) satisfactory to the examining committee and approved by the graduate dean.

The applicant must be recommended for admission by the graduate faculty in the applicant’s area of study. Departments may (and frequently do) establish higher standards than those described here, and may require that applicants submit additional materials. Applicants should contact the department to which they seek admission for information about additional requirements.

The applicant must disclose all institutions beyond secondary school, including Auburn University, which the applicant has previously attended; similarly, all course work and/or degrees must be disclosed. Withholding information requested on the application for admission, including attendance at any other institution, or giving false information, may make the applicant ineligible for admission to the university or subject to dismissal.

Final evaluation of application files will not occur until all of the above requirements have been met. Applicants will be notified by the dean of the Graduate School when an admissions decision has been made. Some departments, operating with a limited number of spaces for students each year, make final decisions for the fall semester in early spring.

Applications for resident and non-resident students are accepted for all curricula; however, the number of students and academic credentials of the applicants accepted for admission are determined by the availability of facilities and faculty.

Admission of Transfer Students

Transfer applicants must provide official transcripts (not duplicated or faxed copies) from each college attended, including any at which the applicant enrolled while in high school. A minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale on all college work attempted and eligibility to re-enter the institution last attended are required to be considered for transfer admission. 

To apply for graduate study, submit to the Office of Graduate Admissions:

A formal application. Applications for admission are submitted online at www.grad.auburn.edu. Domestic applications must be accompanied by a fee of $60; international applications must be accompanied by a fee of $70. These fees may be paid online via credit card. 

Unofficial transcript(s) from all institutions that were attended. If admitted to a program, applicants will be required to submit a final official transcript from each institution, sent directly from the institution(s), prior to registration. Official transcripts may be sent at any time but will be required before registration. An applicant who, because of current enrollment, cannot provide final transcripts at the time of application, should submit the incomplete transcripts from the current institution. Applicants do not need to provide transcripts for credits earned at Auburn University.

Standardized general test scores may be required for graduate program admission. A waiver of standardized test scores may be available in certain circumstances – please check the Graduate School’s Test Score Waivers webpage for current information. Prospective graduate applicants should check with individual departments for specific program admission requirements. International applicants must also submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores. Applications and dates for these tests may be obtained at many colleges and universities; by writing the Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000; by telephoning (609) 771-7670 for the GRE, (609) 771-7330 for the GMAT, or (609) 771-7100 for the TOEFL; or by accessing the Educational Testing Service website at www.ets.org .

Additional Materials. Academic programs typically require additional materials to evaluate an applicant’s potential for graduate study. Prospective students must also contact the department in which they wish to study to obtain information regarding additional admission requirements, such as writing samples and letters of recommendation. With the exception of the application, official transcripts, and standardized test scores, which should be sent to the Graduate School, materials requested by programs should be sent directly to the academic department.

Admission to any graduate degree program is granted by the dean of the Graduate School upon the recommendation of the department of proposed study. Applications and all other relevant material must be received by the Graduate School at least 45 days before the first day of class of the semester in which the student wishes to begin graduate study. International applicants should submit all required materials at least 90 days before the first day of class of the semester in which the student wishes to begin graduate study. However, most academic units make admission decisions several months in advance. Thus, applicants should check with the department to which they seek admission to determine when materials should be submitted. Approval is valid for a maximum of 12 months beyond the beyond the entrance date given on the application, with the approval of the program admitting the student. If the student does not register during this period, a new request for approval must be submitted. Application materials become the property of Auburn University and may not be returned to the applicant or forwarded to other institutions.

A graduate student in good standing in an accredited college or university may be admitted as a transient when faculty and facilities are available. To be eligible, the student must submit a special Graduate Transient Form prior to the beginning of the semester for which transient status is requested. The form, available from the Graduate School or on the Web at www.grad.auburn.edu, must bear the signature of the student’s department head and graduate dean or his/her designee. Transient status is granted for one semester only and does not constitute admission or matriculation as a degree candidate.

First-time applicants to Auburn University’s Graduate School who hold the bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution (or who provide proof of equivalent training from a recognized academic institution outside the United States) and who are otherwise academically qualified but who do not meet certain other requirements for admission may be admitted on a provisional basis. 

These other requirements include but are not limited to the following: 1) scores above the minimum required on standardized tests of English language proficiency, 2) scores above the minimum required on the GRE or GMAT, or 3) the submission of official documentation (e.g., transcripts).

Departments may set higher standards or may not consider students for provisional admission.

International students whose English language proficiency is marginally below the Graduate School’s required levels are required to enroll in Auburn University’s Auburn Global program and satisfy proficiency requirements before enrolling in graduate-level course work. 

Other students who are admitted on a provisional basis are given an opportunity to demonstrate that they can perform graduate-level work and can be expected to make reasonable progress toward earning a graduate degree. They may also be required to remedy deficiencies in undergraduate preparation by taking upper-division courses.

Provisionally admitted students must demonstrate their ability to perform at the graduate level by obtaining a “B” grade point average (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) in their first 12 semester hours of graduate-level work. These 12 semester hours must be completed within the first three consecutive semesters following admission.

Students admitted on a provisional basis will be fully admitted to the Graduate School only when all conditions for admission have been met, including the completion of at least 12 semester hours of approved graduate-level courses at Auburn University with a grade point average of at least 3.0.

Students admitted provisionally who fail to satisfy all conditions for admission within the allotted time period will be dismissed from the Graduate School.

The Graduate School recognizes the achievement of students who have successfully completed a Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program by waiving the Graduate School application fee. A letter confirming participation in the program is required.

The Graduate School recognizes the contributions of students actively serving in the United States military by waiving the Graduate School application fee. A letter confirming active duty status is required.

Study by correspondence shall not be counted toward a graduate degree.

For administrative purposes, Auburn University students are assigned to a class level. Those that apply to graduate students are:

  • MST — Students who hold full admission to Master’s programs.
  • EDS — Students who hold full admission to Specialist in Education programs.
  • PHD — Students who hold full admission to Doctor of Philosophy programs.
  • GCRT — Students admitted to an approved Graduate Certificate program.
  • GND — Students who hold a Bachelor’s degree (or post-baccalaureate degree) may apply for admission to the Graduate School as a non-degree student for personal development, to obtain or renew certification, or to take a limited number of courses preliminary to enrolling in a graduate degree program. No more than 12 hours of credit earned while enrolled as a non-degree student may later be counted toward a graduate degree; however, students officially enrolled in an approved graduate certificate program may count up to the maximum number of credit hours allowed by the certificate program toward a graduate degree. Non-degree students who later decide to pursue a graduate degree must re-apply for admission to the Graduate School and the graduate degree program.
  • GPR — Students who meet requirements for provisional admission except that they have not taken the GRE or GMAT (if required by the admitting program) or have not submitted all transcripts. This classification is for one semester only, and satisfactory scores and/or all transcripts must be submitted by the end of that semester. This classification cannot be used by international students, who must submit official transcripts and satisfactory scores on all required examinations before they are admitted.

The Master's Accelerator Program (MAP) eases the transition from a bachelor’s degree in your home country to graduate school in the U.S. It provides three simple routes to enter your graduate program at Auburn. MAP combines credit-bearing courses from your master’s degree with additional support, teaching, and cultural experiences, helping to ensure your future success. All MAP students complete a comprehensive series of English language, research, and professional development modules (the Professional Development Suite), and a series of credit-bearing graduate courses (the Academic Suite) prior to transferring into their intended degree program.

Auburn Global offers four ways for international students to enter their graduate program. The entry path that is best for you will depend on your qualifications and personal preferences. Choose from the Integrated Master’s Accelerator, the Master’s Accelerator (one term) or Master’s Accelerator (two or three terms). Students in the Master's Accelerator Program are enrolled in a minimum of 14 clock hours in Fall and Spring semesters, and 9 clock hours in summer.

Auburn offers 23 graduate programs through the Master’s Accelerator Program, in engineering, education, mathematics, and public administration, and community planning.

MAP students take a core curriculum* and credit bearing courses from their chosen master’s degree.

Auburn University 2020-21 Application Essay Question Explanations

Auburn University asks applicants to respond to four wordy prompts in 100 words each. In order to stand out, you’ll need to write succinct, brief responses that pack a punch!

Auburn University has a strong institutional mission of service and community. Briefly describe a group, organization, or community that you have been involved with. How long have you been involved with this community? What was your role? Did you seek assistance or additional information to expand your understanding of and ability to contribute to this community? (100 words)

Due to the very limited word count, we recommend you get strategic about how you want to answer this prompt. Try to answer the core of the questions throughout your response, rather than simply listing off facts. Admissions has likely already reviewed your activity list, so take this opportunity to give them insight into your community service experience that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to glean from your application. Maybe you want to focus on the relationship you developed with one of the kids you tutor or the art of holding water cups at just the right height for 5k runners to grab as they speed past on a charity run. Don’t hesitate to get creative with your approach. It’s always easier to cut down your response than to add more.

Briefly describe a situation where you or someone else was not being treated fairly. What did you do at the time and why? Would you do anything differently if that same situation occurred today? Has this event impacted or changed who you are now and if so, how? (100 words)

The admissions department at Auburn University wants to accept students who aren’t afraid to stand up for what they believe in or challenge the status quo, but you don’t have to be a protest organizer to impress admissions here. It can be just as bold to address internalized biases with your parents or to request discrimination training for teachers at your school after an insensitive remark in class. Ultimately, the key to writing an excellent response to this prompt is in the details. Don’t just tell admissions about something bold or brave you’ve done recently; tell them why you did it and maybe even share how you would like to continue to challenge the status quo in the future. Finally, don’t forget to reflect on how the event in question changed who you are. Admissions loves them some self-reflection!

Describe a strong interest or passion of yours. How long have you had this passion, and why does it interest you? What have you learned about yourself through your involvement in this activity; how will this knowledge benefit you as a student at Auburn? Did you have a mentor, support person, or someone who encouraged your interest in this area, and if so, how? Cite a specific goal you achieved and how you achieved it. (100 words)

What would your life be mundane without? Elaborate on an activity or passion you are super excited about or is unusual for someone your age. Your response should reflect your priorities and how you process the world around you, as well as answer all aspects of the prompt at hand. Do you go to Civil War reenactments on the weekends that fuel your love for history and battle trivia? Did these weekend adventures also reveal your interest in performance? Do you take care of stray pets that, one day, you hope to save through veterinary work? What is it about animals that makes you want to dedicate your life to saving and healing them? Did you inherit your animal love from your dad who used to work as a farmhand? Use your experiences to tell admissions something about you they wouldn’t already know. What gives your life meaning? Why do you wake up in the morning? What are you working toward?

Describe an example of a situation where you were given a directive or decision that you disagreed with. What was your role in this situation; were you in a leadership role, a position where others looked up to you, or a contributing member of this group? How did you communicate with others about this decision? What was the outcome? Would you do anything differently? (100 words)

Engaging others in meaningful conversations about issues that are important to you can be incredibly intimidating, and the Auburn University admissions committee knows this. Nevertheless, we have all experienced standing up for what we believe in some capacity, so comb through your memory to identify a time when you had an uncomfortable conversation with coworkers, family members, or even your best friend. Maybe your boss told you to lie by omission to a customer. Did you voice your discomfort? Were you able to clearly communicate your perspective? Perhaps your camp counselor advised you to do something that you just didn’t feel was right. How did you broach the subject and what was the outcome of your conversation? You don’t need to have changed company policies or even someone’s mind to impress admissions here. You just need to show that you’re not afraid to speak up about important issues and engage with those who may have different opinions than you. College will present you with a plethora of opportunities to meet and interact with people who live by different moral codes. Show Auburn that you’re game to learn, listen, share, and grow.

Competitive Merit Scholarships

Competitive merit scholarships are renewable for four years. First-year students must enroll summer or fall immediately following high school graduation to receive consideration.* Consideration

  • First-year students accepted for admission by early February receive automatic consideration. A scholarship application is not required.
  • Consideration is based on high school GPA and standardized test score. Verify Auburn has received your academic information in the Applicant Portal. The high school GPA that determined eligibility for admission will be the same GPA that determines eligibility for scholarships. Auburn will accept the ACT Superscore Report. Auburn will also calculate a superscore for the SAT and any individual score reports from ACT. Only your best testing result will be used for scholarship consideration. Updated highest scores from individual tests must be received by Auburn by January 10. Scores received after this deadline will not be reviewed for competitive merit scholarship consideration.
  • Scholarships are awarded competitively. Consideration does not guarantee an award. Each entering class competes with itself. Actual awards are determined based on the number of qualified admitted students, the credentials of those applicants, and available funding.
  • First-year students accepted for admission earlier are more likely to receive an award.
  • Scholarships are awarded mid-November, mid-December, and mid-February.
  • Recipients are notified by email to their  Auburn email account and by postal mail to their permanent address.

Scholarships for National Merit Finalists

Consideration

  • First-year students named National Merit Semifinalists must complete the scholarship application through AUSOM by February 15.
  • National Merit Finalists should contact the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to name Auburn University as their first choice institution by May 15.  For more information how students qualify as National Merit Finalists, please visit  National Merit Scholarship Corporation .
  • National Merit Finalists receive a stipend of $4,000 over four years at $1,000 per year.
  • Depending on eligibility as determined through completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)*, eligible students may receive an additional $1,000 annually.
  • National Merit Finalists who are Alabama residents may receive the National Scholars Presidential Scholarship valued at $42,000 over four years at $11,000 per year , which will replace a previously awarded competitive merit scholarship.

*The FAFSA is the only form a student is required to complete to be considered for student assistance from any of the Title IV, HEA programs except for information needed to ensure the student’s eligibility for such assistance (e.g., information needed to complete verification or to demonstrate compliance with the student eligibility provisions of the HEA and the regulations). Additional information, if requested, will be listed on the student’s AU Access My Finances page after we receive the results of the FAFSA. Scholarship Payment and Renewal

To receive scholarship funds, students must enroll for a minimum of 12 credit hours each term by the last day to add courses for the term (the 15 th  class day). Scholarship funds are applied as a credit to the student’s university billing account at the amount indicated in the scholarship award letter. Scholarship awards are divided equally between fall and spring semester and disbursed a maximum of 10 days before the semester begins.

Competitive merit scholarships are available for a maximum of eight semesters, independent of academic program. To be eligible for renewal, students must have a minimum 3.0 unadjusted Auburn GPA and have earned a minimum of 24 Auburn credit hours from fall to spring of the current academic year. Eligibility for scholarship renewal for the upcoming academic year is reviewed at the end of spring semester.

Students who plan to enroll summer term and wish for their competitive merit scholarship to be applied during that term should email the Office of University Scholarships. Scholarship funds requested for summer term will contribute to the maximum eight semester total.  Students must be eligible for scholarship renewal at the end of spring semester to request payment for summer term.

Students who are unable to enroll at Auburn for an expected term for any reason should contact the Office of University Scholarships. Exceptions are granted for students who obtain a medical resignation or military withdrawal or participate in the Cooperative Education Program. Students who obtain a medical resignation or military withdrawal or participate in the Cooperative Education program during the fall or spring semester of an academic year may be granted through the summer term to meet renewal requirements.

Competitive merit scholarships may only be applied toward the completion of a first undergraduate degree. Students may use scholarship funds for professional study (i.e. pharmacy or veterinary medicine) or an Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s (ABM) Program, provided they have not already completed a first undergraduate degree, have semesters of eligibility remaining, and are eligible for renewal.  Students who graduate early are ineligible to receive the balance of unused funds in their final semester and may not apply unused funds to graduate study or a second undergraduate degree.

MA and PhD Requirements

Review of applications for fall semester begins in January. To receive full consideration for admission and financial aid, your completed application must be received in our office by the first business day after January 15.

Admission is competitive for all programs, especially for the PhD. In considering applicants, the Graduate Studies Committee looks for students who will benefit from our programs, who will succeed in our programs, and who will add vitality and diversity to the intellectual community of the Department of English through their contributions as graduate students and teachers. The Graduate Studies Committee looks at the whole application, basing its decisions on several kinds of information: grades, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose or professional goals, a writing sample and CV.

Highly ranked candidates for the MA and PhD programs usually present the following:

  • a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (not necessarily in English or writing)
  • an excellent academic record
  • excellent writing skills, as demonstrated by an academic writing sample and by work in undergraduate writing courses
  • strong letters of recommendation
  • clear statement of purpose

How to Apply and What to Submit

Applications to the MA and PhD programs are accepted for fall term only. To be considered for admission, your completed application must be received by the first business day after January 15. If positions remain available after the first round of admissions review, we will consider applications submitted later.

Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies if the deadline has passed and you would still like to apply to the program. All applicants are automatically considered for financial aid in the form of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA); there is no separate application or deadline for the GTA.   

Materials submitted for the MA and PhD applications include:

  • transcripts for all prior degrees
  • a statement of purpose
  • a writing sample
  • three confidential letters of recommendation
  • a curriculum vitae 

Statement of Purpose

The Statement of Purpose is a one to two page single spaced document describing your reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in English and your academic background, experience, and long-term goals. PhD applicants should describe how they plan to build on the skills and interests they developed at the master’s level. MA applicants may wish to indicate which of our three concentrations they plan to pursue (literature, composition and rhetoric or creative writing), although a concentration does not have to be declared officially until the second year of study. We would also be happy to know if you are considering more than one concentration at this stage. 

Writing Sample

Your writing sample should take the form an analytical essay submitted for an English class or closely related field of study. A writing sample submitted with an MA application should range from 10-15 pages; PhD writing samples can be longer, but generally not more than 25 pages. Include a bibliography of all sources. Overall, the topic of the paper is less important than the potential it reveals for successful writing at the graduate level, and we encourage you to consult with a faculty member at your previous or current department for guidance about what to submit. MA applicants planning to concentrate in creative writing should submit a sample of creative writing along with an analytical essay.

Letters of Recommendation

Your application should include three confidential letters of recommendation from current or former professors who can comment in detail on your academic work and potential for success as a graduate student and GTA. Letters should be submitted electronically by your referees. The graduate school application form will automatically email them to request a letter.

Application Process

  • Complete the online application form and pay the application fee. Your application does not become official until the fee has been paid.  
  • Request that official transcripts for all prior degrees be sent to the Graduate School . 

MTPC Requirements

Admission to the Master of Technical and Professional Communication program is competitive. In considering applicants, the technical and professional communication faculty looks for students who will benefit from and succeed in the program and who will add vitality and diversity to the intellectual community of the Department of English. The faculty looks at the whole application, basing its decisions on several kinds of information: academic grades, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, a writing sample and CV.

Highly ranked candidates for the MTPC program usually present the following:

  • excellent writing skills, as demonstrated by academic or professional writing samples and by work in undergraduate writing courses or professional writing experience

The Application Process

Although applicants may request admission in any semester, those who wish to be considered for graduate teaching assistantships or any available graduate assistantships should apply by January 15 to receive full consideration for an assistantship beginning in the fall semester. All application materials should be submitted through the Graduate School .

Writing sample

The writing sample should be 8-10 pages of academic or professional writing. The sample should include documentation of sources and a list of references or bibliography. Applicants who have been in the workforce may submit a substantial professional document, such as a proposal or technical manual, with a cover memo explaining their role in preparing the document and the audience and purpose for the document.

Three letters of recommendation

The three letters of recommendation should typically include at least two letters from current or former professors who can comment on the applicant's academic work. The third required letter may be from another faculty member or from a supervisor or employer.

The statement of purpose should address in one to two single-spaced pages the applicant's reasons for choosing graduate study in technical and professional communication at Auburn University. The statement should briefly discuss the student's academic background and any relevant work experience and should provide the committee with an overview of the student's professional goals.

Requirements for International Students

The Department of English welcomes qualified applicants from outside the U.S. International applicants must meet the same standards of admission as other applicants and submit the same application materials. In addition, international applicants must meet a minimum set of language and financial requirements as established by the Auburn University Graduate School . These requirements are described in more detail below: 

Applicants whose native language is not English must score at least 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper version (pBT), 213 on the computer version (cBT), or 79 on the internet version (iBT). Additionally, successful applicants must score minimums of 16 on the listening, reading, speaking, and writing components of the iBT. Auburn will also accept a minimum score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.

The international student must have sufficient funds to cover all fees, transportation, and living expenses. The Graduate School has no funds for scholarships or fellowships and cannot guarantee other forms of financial aid. An Official Statement of Finances and certified evidence of a sponsor's financial capability must be submitted. Forms are available on the Graduate School web site .

All international students are required to subscribe to Plan II of the Student Insurance Program or provide evidence of equivalent coverage. Information is available at the Auburn Medical Clinic .
