Enemy Movie Review: A no-frills action thriller that strikes the right emotional chords

Rating: ( 3 / 5).

Enemy is not only a film with lots of weaponry, but also one that takes a different type of gun—the Chekhov's gun—quite seriously. There’s quite a bit of evident foreshadowing as well. A dialogue like, "Naan un rani-a thookiten parthiya?" is followed by a shot of a girl close to one of the leads getting kidnapped. A shot that lingers on a digital board, is later followed by the villain hacking into it. Does all the familiarising get us excited throughout the film? The results are varied. You go ‘wow’, but you also go ‘meh’.

Cast: Vishal, Arya, Mirnalini Ravi, Mamta Mohandas

Director: Anand Shankar

Where the film excels in though, is with the emotions. Though we are puzzled about how the leads, Chozhan (Vishal) and Rajiv (Arya), orchestrate missions and evade the law enforcement—like every other action film—it is the 'why' that is of interest. Both men in the film are aware that they can't inflict pain on each other physically, and so, they aim for each other's hearts. Though this isn't an entirely novel idea on the silver screen, the way Anand Shankar builds everything on top of a solid backstory, involving Prakash Raj and the two kids, makes for interesting cinema.

Some may be slightly confused by terms like heat-radiating paints, photographic memory and remote-controlled pacemakers, but if you enjoy these gadgets and the novelty, you are guaranteed a fun ride in this film that is full of such concepts. Though the film doesn't quite outwit the audience with reveals, it keeps trying. Excluding the overlong video call episode of Arya, the film steadily throws you something new to be invested in.

While logic can take a backseat in such action affairs, it does get disconcerting when some basic questions don’t seem to get answered. "Why didn't the leads choose to settle their score by combat when they met for the first time as adults?" "How did one of the leads walk away scot-free, after killing a foreign minister?" "How did Mamta's Anisha guard her identity for decades, while having an obvious surname?"

For these reasons and more, the film isn't Vishal's career-best, but the actor is very much back to form, after some mellow outings recently. The dancing reminds you of his Chellame days, and he looks the part as the alpha male, excelling in action sequences and looking at home with the performance as well. I found it a tad strange that the character seemed to, for some reason, show high levels of concern for Non-Resident Tamils. It is a part of the narrative, sure, but the treatment feels like an advertorial aimed to project the actor as a saviour.

Arya as an actor has the gift of a disarming smile, it’s one that can conceal kind intentions or black malice. It’s hard to truly predict what's underneath until he chooses to reveal it. And this comes in extremely handy for his character, Rajiv, in Enemy . Though Vishal holds an upper hand in action, Arya charms with his style. His 'I have seen everything' attitude in the film explains what Rajiv could have potentially gone on to become such a cold person.

In many action-thrillers, the customary love track and songs come through as speed breakers, but even these elements are quite enjoyable, in the context of this film being a festival release. The sequences are written not to dilute the essence of the main plot.

Enemy is a simple, yet refreshing action thriller, that is self-aware of its potential and refrains from biting more than it can chew. Even the social message towards the end is subtle. Sometimes, it’s better not to aspire for the skies, and pick a level that’s reachable. It’s why Enemy feels like such an efficient film.

Enemy Movie Review (2021)

Enemy Movie Review in English

Enemy Movie Cast & Crew

Vishal and Arya's multi-starrer film, Enemy has hit the screens amidst a fairly good anticipation among the film buffs. Directed by Anand Shankar, this film features Mirnalini Ravi as the female lead and Prakash Raj, Mamta Mohandas, and Thambi Ramaiah in supporting roles. Here is what Enemy is all about.

STORY:  Enemy traces the story of two childhood friends, who turn foes due to one's ego and jealousy. Chozhan (Vishal) and Rajiv (Arya), in their early teens, are trained by Rajiv's father, an ex-CBI officer (Prakash Raj) to make them join the Police. But, certain situations make them part ways and years later, Chozhan becomes a departmental store owner and Rajiv becomes an underground hitman. Fate brings them together once again and they decide to lock horns against each other. What was the conflict between them and who won the face-off forms the plot of Enemy.

SCREENPLAY, DIALOGUES, & DIRECTION:  Enemy has a good premise and when the basement is quite strong, you are bound to be invested in seeing what the film has in store. The idea is definitely interesting and is worthy of being made as a film. Director Anand Shankar builds up the film with several interesting elements which makes the first half fairly engaging, setting up a solid groundwork for the faceoff. However, in the second half, the cat and mouse game isn't packed with solid moments to hold your attention. You pretty much know how Arya's character is going to react to a situation and how Vishal's character will respond. This is where the screenplay faces issues and as a result, the film becomes a mixed bag.

Had the second half been packaged in an engaging fashion with exciting moments, the final product would have been better. With a seamless writing and engaging second half, Enemy would have been a solid action drama. Arya's character had the potential to become an iconic villain on the lines of Siddharth Abhimanyu of Thani Oruvan, but due to a cliched writing and predictable characterization, his actions don't look threatening. Leaving aside these shortcomings, if you are a fan of stylish action entertainers, Enemy could turn out to be a good watch.

CAST:  Vishal is quite impressive as Chozhan and he delivers a fine performance. Action being his forte, the star actor is effective. Arya looks menacing and smart as Rajiv and, it is good to see him on the other side of the play. However, in the emotional scenes, Arya's performance lacks completeness. Prakash Raj, despite appearing in a short role, leaves his mark with measured performance. Thambi Ramaiah as an innocent father does justice to his character. Mirnalini Ravi looks pretty on screen, but, coming to the acting part, she isn't given any responsibilities as she just appears in a brief number of scenes.

TECHNICAL:   Thaman's songs do not have his trademark touch. Sam CS' pulsating score complements the film's subject and it helps in adding energy to the scenes. RD Rajasekhar's cinematography looks solid making the film look neat and rich in terms of visual quality. Raymond Derrick Crasta's racy cuts work in favor of the film.

SO?   A film like Enemy needed a strong writing with a highly engaging second half!

Verdict Vishal and Arya hold this middling action-drama to a decent level!

Galatta Rating: ( 2.5 /5.0 )

If you’re looking out for the storyline of Anand Shankar’s ENEMY starring Vishal and Arya in the lead roles, it’s very much noticeable in the trailer, where we come across couple of friends (played by Vishal and Arya), who turn into foes later. So what’s actually propelling the cat and mouse game between them? That’s the plot of Enemy directed by Anand Shankar, director of movies like Arima Nambi and Iru Mugan. While Irumugan might have witnessed mixed response, there’s something unique about Arima Nambi as the screenplay was excellent. In particular, not all Tamil thrillers start on a high-octane note and Anand Shankar kept us engrossed with the gripping edge-of-seat first half in that movie. Similarly, he endows audiences with a high-end raciness in the first hour of Enemy. Disappointingly, much similar to Arima Nambi, the second half gets scattered directionless.

Be it another release of this festive occasion or Enemy, our Tamil filmmakers have now brought forth an unwanted challenge upon themselves – To impress the Telugu audiences. This lets us put forward a humble request to them – Please make movies for Tamil audiences and don’t step out of our zone. This doesn’t mean not to make a movie outside Indian backdrops, but the ingredients and treatment. Enemy doesn’t demand for songs, but still, the intention of roping in SS Thaman is clearly blatant, which is to impress the neighboring region. The songs in turn become the main hampering gripping screenplay. On the other hand, the writing too gets weak after 30 minutes from the title credits. The cat-and-mouse game is appreciable and the climax is the peak of Anand Shankar’s creative spell, but still, a couple more engrossing sequence would have made a good impact.

Vishal and Arya have never missed to score brownie points when they are given substantial characters. This movie is no exception for them as they have lived their roles to the fullest. In particular, the action block sequences are extremely excellent. They have come up with their best in the emotional scenes as well. Their performances in the climax scene are excellent. Mrinalini Ravi and Mamta Mohandas have done their roles neatly. Prakash Raj and Thambi Ramaiah are good. RD Rajashekar as usual enthralls us with his top-notch cinematography, especially the climax scene. The songs by Thaman and BGM by Sam CS are just average.

If Anand Shankar had crafted a gripping narrative writing, Enemy would have been a stupendous entertainer. For now, it’s a watchable movie, especially for the ones, who aren’t much used to Hollywood and International thriller genre movies.

Verdict: Despite outstanding performances by Vishal-Arya and a decent plot, the screenplay hampers the intensity in many places.

Enemy is a film written and directed by Anand Shankar and produced by Vinod Kumar under the banner Mini Studios. The film has Arya and Vishal in the lead roles while Mirnalini Ravi, Prakash Raj, Thambi Ramaiah, Karunakaran and others play crucial supporting roles.

Rajiv (Arya) and Chozhan (Vishal) are childhood friends who are trained by Paari (Prakash Raj) to become police officers. However, circumstances separate them after Paari dies. 25 years later, one of them becomes good and the other gets involved in terror activities. Who comes up on top in this cat and mouse game forms the rest of the story.

The initial scenes of the film where the childhood versions of Arya and Vishal get trained - though short in time establish the characters really well. Their traits and intelligence levels are registered properly and is consistent throughout the film. In a way, this serves as a drawback too, because it makes both their character arcs monotonous.

Commercially, this film can satisfy you because of the superbly choreographed action sequences. Vishal and Arya, both look their part and sell their characters well. Prakash Raj, Karunakaran, and Thambi Ramaiah chip in with useful contributions and support the story well. All these roles do make an impact, irrespective of the screentime.

The film's screenplay suffers from predictability but still ends up engaging us. Some of the scenes in the first half look out of place but have relevance towards the end. But since they are out of place, they look forced, and we know that they are going to reappear as references in the second half.

Although the film looks like it's intelligently written on the surface level, when you go deeper, the flaws are glaring. A couple of songs in the first half also serve as speed breakers. The background score by Sam CS is impactful and helps the film punch above it's weight.

At a lot of places, it is the background score that keeps you engaged to the screen. While there's nothing novel or unique in the film, the way it has been packaged deserves praise. The climactic fight between Arya and Vishal is worth the hype and it is elevated by RD Rajasekhar's stunning camerawork and Raymond Derrick Crasta's slick editing.

Overall, the film works well technically and engages you well. The entertainment quotient is mostly fulfilled by the various action scenes and the film does justice to the action-drama genre. Vishal and Arya carry the film throughout on their shoulders and also save it from disappointing you. Though not a great film by any means, Enemy will satisfy you.

A stylish action thriller about two friends turned foes, that’s got everything interesting on paper, but mishits the mark when translating onto screen. The movie sets its base strongly in the opening 25 minutes, but later the shallow rivalry setting doesn’t connect any bit emotionally, letting it down for most of its run. The visuals, BGM and performances from Vishal, Arya and the entire cast were good. On the whole, ends up a below average thriller.

Easily one of the worst second halves a film can have.Liked the storyline but poor and lethargic screenplay.Prakashraj's portion with two kids and Sam CS's bgm are the only positives. Arya is a big miscast he is not at all terrifying.

In a nutshell it's an average action drama with forced parenting message at the end.

Jack Russo

India’s commercial cinema maximalism applied to the most minuscule of details. The unwavering insistence on photographic memory is both plot point and genre construct itself, the tool through which Shankar sights beats to constantly unveil even more minute details that too are quickly extrapolated all the way into twists which are forced to one-up each other per the game of cat & mouse. Still, far too long and far too invested in the usual assembly of buddy comic relief, inconsequential romantic leads (there’s a musical number about the friendzone!) and social melodrama to pay proper respect to its finer qualities as an occasionally ultraviolent blast of junk physics, sadistic moralism and glass smashing mayhem - the set-piece where a villain is trying to hack into a politician’s pacemaker as a means of inducing a heart attack while the hero attempts to save her by shooting it out of her chest is everything these films should aspire to be.

When was Enemy's released?

Who will star in enemy, who is the director of enemy, who is the cinematographer of enemy, who is the editor of enemy, what is genre of enemy.

1996: In Ooty, Chozhan Ramalingam and Rajiv Paarirajan are two friends who are trained by Paarirajan, Rajiv's father who is an ex-CBI officer. He enables them to join the police force. Although given equal training, Chozhan appears to best out Rajiv, causing the latter to turn jealous of the former. One day, Chozhan and Rajiv are playing chess in which Rajiv wins. While Rajiv leaves Chozhan pondering over the outcome, he sees Paarirajan dead on the floor. The boys are escorted to the police station and although Chozhan tells the inspector and Ramalingam, Chozhan's risk-averse father, that he can bust the killer using his skills, Ramalingam takes Chozhan away, leaving Rajiv alone.

2021: Chozhan becomes a departmental store owner, run by Ramalingam in Singapore. However, he has now evolved into a part-time vigilante and secretly thwarts minor crimes and corruption to help the Tamil community, One day, a gas company near his store suddenly bursts, which kills 11 Tamil people and severely injures five more. Chozhan nabs Joseph, the painter, who is behind the mess and hand him over to the police. The next day, the Indian External Affairs minister, who comes to Singapore to address the Tamil people struggles to speak at the gathering and Chozhan immediately senses that her artificial cardiac pacemaker had been tampered with, and shoots to save her.

Chozhan is caught by the police but is later released after they realized that he saved her. As soon as Chozhan tips off the police, they capture the culprit at a hotel revealed to be Rajiv, who is now a hardened assassin, who was hired by the Beijing corporate businessman to kill the External affairs minister. However, Rajiv escapes by threatening the policemen by killing their families. Chozhan meets up with Rajiv, who reveals the incident that happened on the day they separated: Rajiv was confronted by Paarirajan who berated him for misusing his skills to loot some money, which made Rajiv kill his father. He also overheard him saying that Chozhan would eventually overshadow Rajiv in anything, thus inciting him to develop a permanent deep hatred for Chozhan.

Upon hearing this, Chozhan warns that he would pay for his mistakes. Instead, Rajiv argues that he has evolved and grown in multiple ways and is way too advanced for Chozhan to intercept, while challenging him to rescue one of his close ones that he would soon kidnap. Chozhan calls everyone for a surprise engagement with Ashvitha. He did this to make sure his loved ones are always with him so none of them get kidnapped by Rajiv. At his engagement with Ashvitha, Chozhan realizes that his cousin's daughter, Pinky has gone missing from her school excursion. Soon, Rajiv contacts him and informs him that he kidnapped Pinky from her school to kill her, but Chozhan responds by abducting Rajiv's pregnant wife Anisha. Chozhan threatens to kill Anisha if anything happens to Pinky.

Chozhan and Rajiv meet in order to exchange their kins. As Rajiv releases Pinky over to Chozhan, Chozhan says that he would not let go of this issue easily. He makes a deal with Rajiv: he will safely transport Anisha back to India if Rajiv surrenders to the police for the deaths of the 11 people. Rajiv agrees reluctantly and surrenders himself. As Chozhan transports Anisha to the airport, The hitman, who was sent by Beijing businessman to kill Rajiv learns about Anisha's connection to Rajiv, where he follows and slits her throat in the washroom. In prison, Rajiv finds out about Anisha's death on TV and is anguished. He thinks Chozhan had broken his deal and escapes the prison, by swallowing prawns making him choke and allergies. He plots against Chozhan by kidnapping the children of his area and addresses the community that in order to save their children, Ramalingam must die.

Rajiv attempts to brainwash someone into shooting Ramalingam to ensure the safety of their children. No one does so, so Rajiv extorts Ramalingam alone to commit suicide by drinking rat poison. In the meantime, Chozhan saves the children. When Chozhan returns to his community with the children, Ramalingam dies, not before telling Chozhan to finish Rajiv. Chozhan confronts Rajiv inside a skyscraper and after an intense combat, Chozhan kicks Rajiv off the building and grabs him by his leg. In the end, he divulges that he wasn't Anisha's murderer and the Beijing corporates were behind it. Rajiv gets shocked after knowing the truth and tries to convince Chozhan to pull him up, but Chozhan drops him off the building leading to his death. Several years later, Chozhan takes his son and lays flowers on his father's grave, and also on Rajiv's grave.

  2. Enemy Movie Review: A no-frills action thriller that strikes the right

The sequences are written not to dilute the essence of the main plot. Enemy is a simple, yet refreshing action thriller, that is self-aware of its potential and refrains from biting more than it can chew. Even the social message towards the end is subtle. Sometimes, it's better not to aspire for the skies, and pick a level that's reachable.

Michael James ★★. A stylish action thriller about two friends turned foes, that's got everything interesting on paper, but mishits the mark when translating onto screen. The movie sets its base strongly in the opening 25 minutes, but later the shallow rivalry setting doesn't connect any bit emotionally, letting it down for most of its run.
