  • Claim Your Provident Fund: Stepwise Guide to PF Withdrawal
  • October 20, 2023

The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is a social security and retirement fund scheme in India. Administered by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) , it is a mandatory savings scheme for salaried employees of public and private organizations in India.

Under the EPF scheme, both employees and employers contribute a percentage of the employee’s salary towards the EPF account. This fund accrues interest and serves as a financial safety net for employees during retirement or in case of emergencies.

However, it also offers withdrawals for various purposes, such as housing, medical expenses, and education. Let us learn how to withdraw your PF amount and what are the valid reasons for the same.

Reasons for PF Withdrawal

In India, employees can make PF withdrawals for various reasons, including:

  • Full and Final Settlement : If you are leaving a job permanently, you can opt for a full withdrawal of your PF balance. This is applicable when you are not planning to work in any establishment covered under the EPF scheme for two months or more.
  • Partial Withdrawal for Specific Purposes : You can make partial withdrawals for specific purposes like medical treatment, house construction/purchase, home loan repayment, education, marriage, or financial emergencies. The specific circumstances and amounts vary for each purpose.
  • Pre-Retirement Withdrawal : If you are nearing your retirement age, you can withdraw a portion of their PF savings to meet financial needs before the official retirement date.
  • Retirement : When you retire from active service after attaining the age of 58 or above, you can opt for a full withdrawal of your PF balance.
  • Migration to a New Country : If you are moving abroad permanently and are not planning to work in an establishment covered under the Indian EPF scheme, you can apply for PF withdrawal.
  • Death of Employee : In case of your death, your nominee or legal heir can claim your  PF balance.
  • Absence from Work : If you have been absent from work for a continuous period due to physical or mental health reasons, you can apply for PF withdrawal. This usually requires a medical certificate.

Different Methods of PF Withdrawal

In India, you can withdraw from your PF in three different ways: offline, through the EPFO website, and using the UMANG app. The processes for PF withdrawal vary based on your reasons for withdrawal and the mode of application, along with your employment status, the organization you worked for, and the specifics of your PF account.

Withdrawing PF Offline

If you have a valid reason and are eligible to apply for PF withdrawal offline, you can follow the stepwise procedure outlined below:

Step 1- Obtain the PF withdrawal form : If you are a member of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), you can download Form 19 (for PF withdrawal) from their official website.

Step 2- Fill the Form : Fill in the required details in the form accurately. This includes your personal details, PF account number, date of leaving the job, reason for leaving, bank account details, and contact information. In some cases, your previous employer’s attestation may be required on the form. Make sure to get it signed and stamped by your employer.

Step 3- KYC : Attach a copy of your Aadhaar card, PAN card, and bank passbook/cancelled cheque as KYC documents. This will help in verifying your identity and bank account.

Step 4- Submit the Form : Submit the filled and signed form along with the necessary documents to your regional EPFO office. You can locate your nearest EPFO office using the EPFO office locator provided on the website.

Step 5- Processing Time : The processing time for PF withdrawal can vary. Generally, it takes around 15-30 days, but it might take longer in some cases, depending on the circumstances.

Step 6- Approval and Payment : Once your application is approved, the PF amount will be transferred to the bank account mentioned in your withdrawal form. You will receive a confirmation message on your registered mobile number/mail.

Withdrawing PF Amount from the EPFO Website

To apply for online PF withdrawal, follow these steps:

Step 1- Activate UAN : Make sure your Universal Account Number (UAN) is activated. The UAN is provided by your employer and is required for online PF transactions.

Step 2- Login to UAN Portal : Visit the UAN portal of the EPFO website ( https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/ ) and login using your UAN and password. If you haven’t registered, you can do so by clicking on the ‘Activate UAN’’ link on the portal.

Letter of Withdrawal Template

Withdrawal letter email examples.

Have you changed your mind about applying for a job? When you started your job search, it might have seemed impossible that you’d ever voluntarily withdraw your application with a company.

Especially if you’re unemployed or have been eager to make a change for some time, you may have started off eager for a job—any job. And now, here you are, trying to figure out how to leave the interview process with a prospective employer, before they’ve even extended an offer .

You may be wondering if it’s rude to drop out in the middle of the process, or if you’ll burn your bridges with the employer by leaving after they’ve invested time interviewing you. If so, it might help to know that you’re not alone.

Candidates end the job interview process with companies more often than you might think, and for all kinds of reasons.

Withdrawing also doesn’t have to sour the relationship with the employer or the hiring manager. Go about this the right way, and you’ll be able to work with these folks again later on, should your situation change.

Here are tips on how and when to withdraw an application for a job, what to write, and examples of withdrawal letters to review.

Why Do Job Seekers Withdraw Their Applications?

You know why you’re withdrawing your application, but it may allay your anxiety somewhat to know that your reason is only one of many. Job seekers end the interview process for many reasons, including:

Accepting another job. Most professionals pursue multiple leads when looking for work, so it’s common to receive one offer while you’re still interviewing elsewhere. While it’s acceptable to ask for a bit more time to consider another offer that seems imminent , you may decide to take the one in front of you. In this case, you’d need to withdraw from the process with the other employer.

The hiring process. For some candidates, the hiring process itself can be an issue. A HireVue survey reports that some of the top reasons for withdrawing include the applicant's time being disrespected during the interview, poor rapport with the interviewer, the length of the process, and the job description not matching what was advertised.

Realizing the job isn't a good fit . During the interview process, you’ll learn about the company’s culture, goals, opportunities for advancement, salary, and so on. You may discover that your needs are incompatible with the employer’s requirements. If so, it’s a good idea to look elsewhere.

Relocation. Perhaps your spouse is being transferred out of town for their job, or maybe you’re going back to school or moving to a new area for personal reasons.

Family needs. A family member may be ill and need you to care for them, or perhaps your spouse is in the military and is deploying, necessitating a move closer to relatives who can help.

Whatever the reason, the most professional thing to do in this event is to notify the employer with a letter of withdrawal promptly.

People sometimes worry that withdrawing their application will burn a bridge with the company. In fact, if you are certain the job is not right for you, withdrawing your application is a favor to the company.

It saves them time and effort and allows the company to focus on candidates who are still interested in the position. Employers would prefer to avoid making job offers that are rejected . The key to avoiding any soured relationship is to be polite and prompt with your withdrawal letter.

In your letter, you don’t need to provide a reason for withdrawing your application. You are simply letting them know that you no longer wish to be considered for the position. If you decide to include a reason, keep it positive. If the job just isn’t a good fit, you can say so without implying anything negative about the company or their staff.

You should send the letter as soon as you know that you are no longer interested in pursuing the job, to allow the hiring manager to focus on viable candidates.

How to Format the Letter or Email Message

  • Use standard business letter format. If you send your letter via postal service, you should format it as you would any professional business correspondence.
  • Begin with your contact information , followed by the date and the employer's contact information. Your letter should begin with a polite salutation, and then express the reason you are writing.
  • Thank them for the time they have spent considering you for the position.
  • End with a professional closing.

When you send your letter of withdrawal via email, you don’t need to include the employer’s contact information. The subject line should include your name and “Withdraw Application.” Begin the letter with your salutation followed by a paragraph (or two) stating your intention to withdraw your application from consideration, and thanking them for their time.

Close with your name and contact information.

Download the withdrawal letter template (compatible with Google Docs and Microsoft Word) or see below for more examples.

PF Withdrawal Rules After Resignation: How To Withdraw PF Online After Leaving Job?

Updated on : Apr 4th, 2023

10 min read

The total Employees’ Provident Fund ( EPF ) amount consists of the contribution made by the employer and employee and the accumulated interest on the amount.   Under the Employee Provident Fund Act 1952, once you attain 58 years of age, you can claim the total PF corpus on retirement. However, in certain conditions, you can claim it before attaining the age of 58.

Typically, there is a 2-month waiting period after resignation, after which you can withdraw your entire PF amount. If you want to know the procedure to withdraw PF online after resignation, scroll down and read further.

Eligibility for PF Withdrawal After Resignation

You need to fulfil certain conditions to be eligible to withdraw your PF amount, which is as follows:

  • You must serve a notice period of one month or pay the corresponding amount to the employer.
  • You must complete two months of continuous service with your current employer.
  • Your personal details must be updated on the EPFO portal.

Procedure for PF Withdrawal After Resignation

Here is the procedure for PF withdrawal after your resignation:

  • The first step towards withdrawing your PF balance is to submit Form 19 (PF Settlement Form) to your current employer. You can easily obtain this form from the  official website of EPFO or the nearest EPFO office. Before submitting it to your current employer, you must sign the form. You must also submit a cancelled cheque or a copy of your bank account’s passbook.
  • In case you change your job, you can transfer your PF account from your previous employer to the new one to avoid incurring tax on the interest. You can do this simply by submitting Form 13 to the current employer. After submitting the form, your current employer will verify all necessary details and approve your withdrawal request. The entire process may take approximately 20 days from the date of form submission.
  • After withdrawal request approval, your accumulated PF amount will be automatically credited to your bank account after 30 days from the date of approval.

How to Withdraw From an EPF Account Online?

In today’s era of digitalisation, making a withdrawal request for a PF amount is hassle-free. Simply visit the EPFO portal and submit a withdrawal claim using your UAN. All you need to do is follow these simple steps below:

Step 1: Visit  EPFO’s official portal and enter your UAN and password to sign in.

Step 2: Click on the 'Online Services' tab. In the drop-down menu, choose the 'Claim' option.

Step 3: Once redirected, enter your bank account number and click ‘Verify’.

Step 4: Click the ‘Yes’ to continue and select ‘Proceed with Online Claim’.

Step 5: Under the ‘I want to Apply for’ tab, select the type of withdrawal claim you want to apply for.

Step 6: Select the ‘PF Advance’ form. Explain the reason behind the EPF amount withdrawal and submit your application. You may be asked to submit documents for verification.

Step 7: After the approval, the PF amount will get credited to your bank account.

Taxation Of PF Withdrawal After Resignation

The Employee Provident Fund is a retirement benefit in which you and your employer contribute 12% of your salary towards EPF. The withdrawal amount consists of the principal amount and the interest earned.

PF withdrawal becomes taxable depending on the time of withdrawal. For instance, if you withdraw before five years of continuous service, the taxability differs from the PF withdrawal after five years of continuous service.

If you want to withdraw the PF amount after completing five years of service, then your entire amount, including the principal and interest earned, would be tax-free. However, the investment and interest earned would be taxable if you want to withdraw the PF amount beforehand.

However, if the primary reason for discontinuation of service and withdrawal of the PF amount falls under any of the following reasons stated below, it shall not be taxable:

  • Discontinuation of employer’s business
  • Medical emergency (Illness or disability).

Impact on Future EPF Contributions

EPF is a retirement savings option providing assured returns and tax benefits. However, withdrawing the EPF balance before completing the required five years of continuous service will reduce your retirement benefits. Additionally, your future EPF contribution will get impacted as the withdrawn amount will be taxable.

The PF amount is a part of your salary, which the employer deducts on your behalf every month. After your resignation or retirement, you can claim the PF amount accordingly. You can withdraw this PF amount by filling out the ‘Composite Claim’ form on the EPFO website. Make sure to go through all the information discussed about PF withdrawal in this article before filing a withdrawal claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the common reasons for pf withdrawal rejections.

Your PF withdrawal request can be rejected for various reasons. This includes inaccurate or incomplete details, mismatch in details, insufficient balance, duplicate applications, etc.

How much PF will I get after my resignation?

It generally depends on the situation based on which you are withdrawing your PF amount. For instance, if you wish to withdraw the PF amount before five years of continuous service, you will need to pay tax on the withdrawn amount. On the contrary, if you want to withdraw the PF amount after five years of continuous service, it is typically tax-free .

Can I withdraw the full PF amount after my resignation?

Yes, you can withdraw the full amount after your resignation. As the amount is taxable in certain conditions, it is always advisable to transfer the PF balance to the new employer's account. You can also keep it invested for a long tenure in order to earn interest and tax benefits.

Is it mandatory to withdraw PF after resignation?

No, it is not mandatory to withdraw the PF amount after resignation. If you do not withdraw your PF after your resignation, the account will remain active and will continue to earn interest. You can also keep it inactive until you decide to transfer or withdraw it to a new employer .

Is it possible to remain an EPF member even after retirement?

Yes, it is possible to remain an EPF member even after retirement. If you have reached your desired retirement age but still continue to work, you can remain an EPF member.
