Do you sometimes wonder what would happen if we went back to times where we didn’t have smartphones? Or for some reason the resources behind the technology that produces these devices were no longer available and that’s it…no more smartphones.

Would your world fall apart or could you survive?

Now probably the people who are my age, which is a generation that has witnessed life without smartphones in their adult lives, are more resilient and would say

“sure I could try”

with a little self-doubt.

Among the generation of our parents and grandparents might be even some people who have never used them or made them a part of their lives (although probably rather rare).

Those who are younger though, aka the Gen Z, most of whom lived with technology in their youth as well as young adulthood, would probably find it a bit more difficult to imagine such a scenario.

I’ll help. So, let’s go back to imagining.

It’s morning. You wake up to the sound of your old fashion alarm clock, if you have nowhere to go or a super reliable biological clock you just wake up in your own rhythm. You look at your partner if you have one, or your pet if they like sleeping on your bed, or simply look out of your window. Maybe you even go and open that window, breathe a little bit of the fresh air while you observe the bustling of the streets or listen to the chirping of the birds depending on where you live.

You move on to start your morning routine, like go to the toilet, brush your teeth, maybe do a little meditation or a morning yoga if you are a fan, go prepare a breakfast and slowly enjoy it. All of this without thinking if someone has sent you a message last night, without checking the online news to see if the world has gone down or not, without having your morning portion of social media feed filled with what people you haven’t seen in years have been doing in moments they choose to show you and whatever kind of advertisement your algorithm thinks you might like.

Imagine making it until the end of breakfast without all that brain pollution.

Now you have to dress and get out. You don’t know the weather? Get a thermometer or wait, you did indeed feel the temperature once you opened the window this morning. I think you can do it! So go and put some clothes on and get out.

Maybe you have to get to your workplace. I hope you do know the way since you have to do that every day.

But maybe you have a different appointment and have to get somewhere new.

Let’s say, the unemployment agency has decided that you should stop being a lazy bum and take a re-education course about how to be a more acceptable human being for the labour market. How do you get to that coaching session in the middle of nowhere without your cell phone?

Now this is a tough one.

In the past, there were wise humans on the streets to whom you could ask directions to. Nowadays, everybody pulls out their phone. You can’t do that, nobody has smart phones anymore.

Probably there is chaos in the streets with everyone asking each other where to go. The opportunists are selling bundles of street maps for 20€ each. Luckily, the agency has told you which train to take and where to get off. So far so good. You go and take your train. They are so nice that they even drew a little map of the streets you need to take once you get off. That’s easy, you just follow the little sketch. If it was the wrong way go back and try the other side to see the street name you are looking for.

You might be a little late but they understand because it’s your first day without the online maps. You’ll get better.

Now you listen to whatever the course is about without your phone beeping, without all the distractions. You have really absorbed all the information they have to give you. You see that it’s all trash and you are helpless.

You want to go back home. It will be easier this time. Just take the streets backwards and get on the train.

You are frustrated. Worried about the future. Not sure what it is that you are meant to do. Not sure who you are yet to be. So many feelings, thoughts and questions.

There is no smartphone to pull out to google:

“Is it normal to feel sh*t?”.

You can also not look at your social media feed to numb all these feelings and forget what it was that made you feel awful.

You take a detour.

There is a cute ice cream stall near the train station. You pick your two flavours; strawberry and chocolate.

You chat a little bit with the owner. He complains about his life without the smartphone. You nod along and show compassion.

For a stupid reason or a no-reason, you are filled with hope. You hop a little when walking to the train. You strangely smile at the people and the angry dog on the train. Maybe it’s the sugar. Maybe it’s the hormones. Maybe it’s the fact that you can’t possibly be hopeless for so long.

You get out feeling: I’ve got this.

Now you go try to chase that feeling.

Maybe you ruin the kick you got from that feeling by doing something impulsive, something that you thought you wanted. Like go and buy a very expensive camera deciding you are going to be an amazing street photographer. Then you feel too shy to photograph the people on the street. The technology is too complicated. You don’t get the whole light thing. You never liked Physics. But it’s OK. You’ll sell it back with a decent price. Everybody makes stupid decisions.

You’ll be better next time.

Or maybe you did make a “strategically” good decision and went to the library. You were always a bit of a bookworm. You found a book that gave you a little bit of a clarity, that offered one perspective to make sense of the crazy world you now live in, without the smartphone. You feel better. You don’t have that hyped, hopeful post-ice cream mood. But you do feel good. You feel like you got this, this time you say it to yourself less high-pitched and more grounded.

You start writing your heart out. Words flow one after another. It feels like either you needed to express yourself so badly or you were dying for an opportunity to produce.

You feel like you have done something.

Now go enjoy that feeling.

Maybe invite a friend over for a coffee. How? Go ring their bell or use one of those old phones. Thank God you have written down some phone numbers before the whole thing went down.

Or take your lovely dog for a walk.

I think you will be fine without the smartphone.

If you live abroad just tell your family you’ll only be available through arranged Skype dates.

While communication technologies have penetrated to the lives of contemporary society, it does not positively contribute to its adequate cultural, psychological and social development.

Ladies and gentlemen, today my team plan to prove the affirmative speaker’s argument is not well-grounded because it distorts the current data on negative influence of mobile phone use. My argument will provide a wider picture on social, cultural, and political contexts that are negatively influenced by the wireless technology.

My first speaker will elaborate on the negative impact of mobile phones on human health, which can persuade the audience that living without mobile phones is possible because this lifestyle is much healthier.

My second and third speakers will focus on detrimental effects of living with mobile phones in cultural and political terms. The exploration of all these outcomes can prove the living without mobile phones is much better.

Affirmative speakers recognize that mobile media and communication networks have captured the entire global community that cannot imagine their daily activities without phone use.

All meetings, conferences and appointments are now arranged by means of these portable devices because it is incredibly fast and convenient. However, overuse of mobile phones deprives people of face-to-face communication and makes them less interested in visiting their friends and relatives.

More importantly, daily use of cell phones can pose harm to human health due to the influence of phone radiation. In a broader sense, use of telecommunication technologies makes people more dependent on social opinion and political power that often manipulates society for their own purposes.

Power and mobile communication, therefore, shape a dangerous synthesis depriving people of personal, objective evaluation of various events.

The fact that society is constantly developing is undeniable and the invention of mobile inventions is a logical outcomes. However, technological progress does not always contribute to the improvement of societal welfare.

Hence, emergence of wireless technology creates a wider access to information and people, but deprives people of face-to-face communication (Ganguly et al 2011). Reference to previous history of development proves that society can flourish without use of mobile phones.

The point is that older generations are not so dependent from cell phones as their descendants (Walsh et al., 2010). Indeed, young people embracing technology are more likely to employ wireless technologies rather than take advantage of live communication.

Despite this face, the possibility to minimize the use of cell phones is possible as soon as numerous researches introduce the persuasive arguments about the harmful effect of their frequent utilization.

As it has been mentioned previously by affirmative team, mobile phones constitute an inherent element of daily life. However, within a health care perspective, mobile phone radiation can have negative consequences for human health.

Although recent studies have not approved the connection between radiation emission and cancer emergence, there are still other negative outcomes, such as thermal heating, which pose risks to human health. According to Ganguly et al. (2011), hazardous influence of mobile phones is under the focus of most scholars due to the increased demand for wireless technologies.

In particular, the researchers insist, “most of the heating effect occurs on the head surface, facial nerves and surrounding sift tissue causing increase in temperature by a fraction of a degree” (Ganguly et al. 2011, p. 370). Many other negative outcomes can make the modern society think over the reduction of mobile phone use.

Certainly, total refusal to use mobile phone in daily life is impossible, particularly for the representatives of Generation Y and Generation Z. These layers of population have grown up along with the simultaneous invention of these telecommunication devices. Therefore, their lifestyles could not be changed immediately.

Although the affirmative speaker focuses on the development of innovative technologies as the way to societal welfare, the emergence of innovative technologies has had an adverse effect on social and psychological development of the global communities.

This is of particular concern to the shifts in communication approaches, as well as daily activities. However, these changes could not be regarded as absolutely positive, although these technological introductions contribute to the emergence of a new society with new moral and ethical values that differ much from older generations (Nassiri et al. 2012).

Dependence on these cell phones in these terms can distort individuals’ understanding of social and cultural identity. Nassiri et al. (2012) have also found interesting data about the connection between personality traits and mobile phone use.

In particular, they have discovered, “…extraversion and neuroticism have from two major personality factors related to dependent on mobile phones” (Nassiri et al. 2012, p. 114). The studies, therefore, prove that use of wireless technologies creates an overwhelming impact on human behavior, personality, and consciousness, leading to loss of self-awareness and self-esteem.

The possibility to live without mobile phones can also be supported by the greater concern with political influence and its dominating power in the sphere of media and telecommunications.

In this respect, Goggin (2011) focuses on historic perspective to underline the insignificance of communication in lives people. In fact, most media companies have become dependent on mobile phones as the most popular media platform for mass mailing and advertising.

Life Without a Cell Phone: Benefits and Outcomes

Since prehistoric times, man has sought ways to make his life easier through inventions. The last century has witnessed the creation of the most epic inventions which have revolutionalized human life. One invention which has had a major impact on human life is the cell phone. Despite being a relatively new communication technology, cell phones have within the last two decades gained unrivaled prominence as the preferred medium of communication. At present, it is estimated that 80% of the world population use cell phones, and nearly all homes own at least one cell phone. In this essay, I shall speculate on how life would be like if the cell phone was never invented. I shall then make recommendations on how to best live life without this device.

In today’s society, the use of cell phones has become an integral part of not only our social network but our life as a whole and it is now almost impossible to imagine a world without the cell phone. Personally, the greatest benefit of my cell phones is its portability, which virtually allows me to be in many places at the same time. I can monitor several activities in different places all with just a push of a button, saving me a lot of time and other resources.

My social life has also greatly been enhanced by this invention. It has enabled me to constantly stay in touch with my friend through phone calls irrespective of how far they are. Using the texting capability, I can send and receive multiple messages to and from several correspondents.

This increases efficiency as well saves me considerable time and cost. Cell phones are not limited to the basic function of making calls, and with internet capabilities, cell phones can double up as mini computers. This allows me to instantly download information, catch up on the latest news, views, and movies, communicate with my friend through different social networks, send and receive important business information, and the best part about all this is I can do it anywhere at any time.

Life would be significantly different without the presence of the cell phone. To begin with, people would not be able to deliver urgent messages promptly. The time taken to communicate would also be significantly increased since cell phones allow people to talk instantaneously. Without the cell phone, long distant communications would be complicated making it difficult to keep in constant touch with friends or relatives who may live far away. The coordination capabilities that cell phones facilitate would also be hampered and in instances such as rescue operations, the success rates would be significantly reduced.

Cell phones have undoubtedly made slaves of men. We are constantly forced to act on the information which we receive through our cell phones without breaks. Cell phones bring about a lot of pressure and cause unnecessary worries as a result of their immediacy. Real relationships have also suffered as a result of the pressure that mobile phones create since, in the present time, people are still obligated to deal with work issues even from their homes.

Before the invention of the mobile phone, people enjoyed some solitude while at home or on travel since then they did not have to tackle work or other emerging issues then. The mobility in which cell phones afford us has resulted in us losing touch with each other on the streets or at work where we are too engrossed with our electronic devices to even acknowledge other people around us. With these considerations in mind, it can be suggested that we would be better off without cell phones.

While cell phones have become an integral part of modern life, it is still possible to envision a life without cell phones. As has been noted, the greatest merit of cell phones is its ability to enable people to make plans.

People can still live without cell phones by making plans in advance and sticking to them. To help foster relationships over long distances means such as constant letter correspondence can serve the purpose of helping people to keep in touch as well as vocational visits. While this may not be as timely as cell phones, the time and effort that a person puts in the task may enhance the long-distance relationship. Without the constant distraction of cell phones, we as humans can get to enjoy solitude and discover ourselves.

In this essay, I set out to envision a life without cell phones which currently serve a major role in our lives. I began by articulating the roles that cell phones play in my life to demonstrate their importance. I then described how life without cell phones would be and evaluated my thoughts as to whether we would be better off without cell phones. Life without a cell phone would be less efficient and communication efforts would be more difficult than they presently are as a result of cell phones. Even so, the very benefits of cell phones have turned us into a connected people who are overwhelmed with information. Our lives would therefore be more fulfilling without the pressure that cell phones create.

To use mobiles is for them to be up to date. They avail themselves of the opportunity of the internet connection in their mobiles and do whatever they like to do. Obscene video clippings and some other versions of immoral entertainment are now available in mobiles. Therefore, the students have now tremendous fascination for the mobiles. Consequently, instead of studying, concentrate on using mobiles for sheer fun.

Another demerit is that because of the excessive use of the mobiles different companies plunge themselves into doing profitable business. Consequently, numerous towers have been erected for the network of mobiles. It is well known that a particular wave which is responsible for the mobile network does harm to the ecological balance of the environment. It is evident in the pale colors of the trees and fruits adjacent to the mobile towers.

Thus, it is the time to be conscious of the abuse of the mobiles. The concerned authority should take immediate steps to stop immoral business which is proliferating in abusing mobiles. All should remember that the sole purpose of mobile is to communicate. Entertainment may be available in the network of mobiles. But there should be no immoral design. Above all, the government should restrict the use of mobiles, so much so that anti-social activities may not be done through mobiles.

Today, no one can imagine life without a smartphone. That’s because mobile technology has not only changed our lives, but in some form we have become slaves to it. Many of us can definitely notice the anxiety which may overcome us, when we forget to take our smartphone with us. We have this sense that we are losing contact with reality, resulting in panic. 

Sometimes, when we’re not calling, texting, or even waiting for an important call, we are still gripping the phone tightly in our hand, almost like a crutch. Often, the phone absorbs so much of our focus and attention that we forget about others, we forget to connect with those around us - because we are staring at a screen in front of our face. 

This brings us to an interesting question: Would you be able to survive a few hours, a day, a week - without a smartphone and the Internet?

These days, many people, especially young people, can't imagine life without a cell phone, or rather without a minicomputer with the Internet - because that's essentially what smartphones are today. Perhaps without smartphones they would not be able to do so many things! For instance, some individuals might think that it is not worth stopping to talk to a stranger, to ask for directions, since a smartphone comes with a GPS application. Why involve another person in our daily life struggles, when a mini computer can assist us in finding our way. 

If you’re like me, you might remember the world before mobile phones and the Internet? It's hard to believe that people didn't always have phones in their pockets. That's why pay phones were so important. And even before that, there were telephone operators who would facilitate long-distance and international calls. 

These days, it is not uncommon to see the whole family looking at their smartphones instead of talking to each other. Often even on the Christmas table - next to crockery and cutlery - lie the smartphones. Although the phone allows us to communicate quickly and effectively with anyone, anywhere in the world, in a way, it also takes away our ability to have a meaningful conversation. The type of conversation with eye contact and body language. The smartphone is present everywhere, and momentarily turning it off or leaving it at home can feel like part of us is missing. 

Even 15 years ago, owning a smartphone was something that wasn’t so common. Even though most people had mobile phones, they were usually not of the “smart” variety. Today there are fewer and fewer people who do not use digital technology in some form. There’s no denying that the smartphone changed our life. However, we must be careful, because excessive and mindless use of these devices can turn into an addiction.

Our smartphones have become such an integral part of our lives that even our sleep is disrupted by them. The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with our natural sleep patterns, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Additionally, constantly checking our phones before bedtime can cause anxiety and make it even more difficult to wind down. Using your smartphone as an alarm clock can also be problematic, as the temptation to check notifications and social media can make it harder to fall back asleep after being woken up. I spent a year living and working without a phone, and it radically improved my life. Here are 6 things I learned.

For the past fifteen minutes, I had been standing at the agreed intersection, wondering whether my friend was still coming to pick me up before our tennis game. But I can't call or text him —since I no longer have a phone. For the moment, I wait, trust, and read as the clock keeps ticking.

As I ponder whether I should walk back home, a car honks from a distance, flashing its lights. My friend waves.

As we make our way to the courts, my mind backtracks.

A few weeks ago, my phone's charge port stopped functioning, and as an experiment, I decided to see if I could go without a phone for two weeks. When my two weeks were up, I didn't feel ready to have a phone again. Without a particular time frame in mind, I decided to extend the experiment and it ended up lasting an entire year.

Like many of us, I found that I spend too much time on my phone, and was way too reliant on it.

According to research from Insider Intelligence , Americans spend an average of 4 hours and 31 minutes a day on their phones. Research from the tech care company Asurion found that Americans check their phones an average of 96 times a day, or around once every ten minutes.

Even if you manage to avoid looking at your phone 96 times a day, research says that just having a phone around can negatively impact your cognitive abilities. A 2017 study published in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research found that "even when people are successful at maintaining sustained attention — as when avoiding the temptation to check their phones — the mere presence of these devices reduces available cognitive capacity."

Given those negative impacts, I wanted to know what would happen if I suddenly gave up my smartphone – whether I'd feel better or worse, more productive or less capable of doing my job. Like so many others, I'd treated my phone as a crutch – there to entertain me when I was bored, or remind me of a fact or event that I'd forgotten. I'd gotten so dependent on it that I wasn't sure who I was without it. But I wanted to find out.

I learned to let go of the anxiety of feeling disconnected

I'm a writer and content creator, and I found that when I sat down to write, not having my phone next to me allowed me to get into a deeper state of flow. I also run a business focused on educational travel. But since travel was halted due to the pandemic, and we had no groups moving around, there was nothing particularly urgent.

I wasn't a very active social media user when it came to Facebook or Instagram, but I relied a lot on WhatsApp and iMessage for my daily communications, and I mostly handled email from my phone. I found that when I checked my emails or messages on the computer after coming back from a tennis game, for example, nothing pressing had happened. It took time, but eventually, the anxiety I felt from being disconnected began to wane.

Suddenly, I could wake up and center myself instead of picking up the phone as my first action of the day. The absence of a phone allowed me to do some much-needed self-examination. What was I feeling anxious about? Why did I feel the need to be instantly available to all people?

I also realized how much I relied on my phone for basic things, like remembering phone numbers.

I knew the phone number of friends I had met over ten years ago — pre-cell phone — but I couldn't recall the contact numbers of anyone I had met recently. I'd been relying more on my phone's memory instead of mine.

I now needed to write down someone's phone number and then wait and call them from my landline if I wanted to reach them, which made my communication more intentional. Instead of sending half-hearted texts and juggling multiple conversations at once I was forced to engage with one person at a time.

I was forced to face my feelings when I found myself alone

With a phone, when I needed instant gratification, I would message someone to gain validation, but I could no longer do this. With no on-demand apps available, my escape routes were blocked. If I was at a bar, sitting by myself, and I started feeling uncomfortable, I could no longer use my phone as a distraction. I had to face my feelings. The same applied to difficult conversations. I noticed how other people looked down at their phones, avoided the topic, and attempted to sort it out later through text. But I didn't have that easy out.

It presented some logistical challenges

There were, of course, also logistical issues that I needed to deal with without a phone.

For example, I couldn't order an Uber unless I borrowed somebody's phone, which I did when I had no other viable option in sight—and overall, things required more logistical planning, at least initially. Some things took longer than originally expected, and I had to do more communicating upfront with people when it came to making plans.

It forced me to learn to be a better communicator

I was forced to learn how to communicate better. I was also forced to undo the default instinct to pull out my phone to get directions. I'd been so used to having a GPS do the work for me, but without a phone or Google Maps, I had to ask for help — to actually talk to other people and ask for directions.

Not always being available made my employees more self-reliant

Needing help, and learning how to ask for help also transformed how I run my businesses. I realized that colleagues might know better than me when it came to certain topics, and it did not make me any less worthy. If we really want to build a team, we need to learn how to be open to receiving help along the way.

I had prided myself on being instantly responsive to everyone at my company. Now that this was not an option, people had to adjust and seek out their own solutions. Even if it was harsh at the beginning — many people around me did not like the change — it led to much-needed shifts because I was no longer always available.

I realized I was more of a micromanager than I thought. I became aware of how many problems could be sorted out by my staff if I trusted them, instead of always trying to be the savior. This helped my business be less dependent on me, and it also opened up the space for other people to step up to the plate.

Gradually, I felt a deeper sense of inner peace, which also allowed me to have greater focus on my work. Instead of waking up being instantly responsive, and interrupting my flow to respond to all the messages on my phone, I could be fully present with whatever I was doing.

I learned that I can have a healthier relationship with my phone

Before this, one of my most phone-intensive activities was my educational travel business, which, as I mentioned, had halted its ground operations. However, as travel returned, I was due to co-lead a program in New York.

I felt I needed a phone to do my job, so a year after my phone-free experiment began, I reactivated my mobile contract.

This would be a test of whether I would use the device or it would use me, but I'm proud to say it's been the former more than the latter.

As of now, I keep a "deep work" approach where I maintain office hours to respond to apps like WhatsApp or Telegram but otherwise try and stay away from my phone.

Of course, it is not always flawless. Sometimes the desire for instant gratification comes, and I turn to my texts. Or there are times when I'm in social groups, and the conversation is boring, and because I don't want to hurt people by leaving, I turn to my phone to check the latest ATP or Premier League scores.

But overall, I feel a lot better, and my anxiety about feeling connected to the world has dwindled over time. My awareness has increased, and so have my communication skills. I have a phone, but it's not my life — it's a tool I use when I need it. One of my proudest achievements is that I now have important conversations in person (or by a video call when the person is not in the same place as me) instead of attempting to escape the situations through vague texts or simply ghosting.

Smartphones aren't good or bad — they simply amplify the consciousness of their users. It can improve our lives or worsen them. Whether we make our phone our ally or our enemy is a choice.

Overview: How do we communicate with people who aren’t nearby? Today we can simply reach into our pockets, grab our mobile phone, and dial a number. But 130 years ago there were no phones to be had (except for the experimental one in Alexander Graham Bell’s workshop). But there was still an urgent need to communicate with people far away, even then!

This lesson explores the ways in which people communicated without telephones, the limitations of these methods, and thus the reasons for the invention of the telephone.

Guiding Questions:

• How did people communicate before there were telephones?
• Why do people need to communicate over long distances (and why do we need phones to do it)?

Suggested Activities: Before doing any reading or research, ask students how they would communicate with one another without the use of their phones (and without computers!). Would they send messengers? Would they use the post office to send letters?

Next read and discuss the various methods that were used historically to communicate: smoke signals, couriers, and, finally, telegraphs. Ask students to list (either on their own or as a group) the advantages and limitations of each, and discuss these in class. For instance, smoke signals are limited in terms of how much information they can get across and the environment in which they can operate; couriers can get very specific information across (through letters, etc.) but are hampered by distance (taking days or weeks to reach their destinations); the telegraph overcame these distance and time limitations, but still needed to have an encoder on one end and a decoder on the other.

Use the information in “Smoke Signals” to have the pairs of students create and “send” messages to one another (not, obviously, using real smoke, but just describing the “puffs” of smoke through gestures and working out a code between them). Demonstrate how intervening terrain (e.g., other students) can block the signal.

If you have time, you can also demonstrate how a telegraph works and discuss Morse code with the students. Have them use Morse code to write letters to one another. Then discuss the ways in which this is still more difficult than simply talking over the telephone.

Assessment: This lesson can be evaluated strictly on class participation and the ideas discussed. You can also have the students write an essay after the lesson comparing the telephone with the other communication methods discussed and discussing the ways in which the telephone is better (or worse!).

Extension: How has email and instant messaging changed the way we communicate (from, for instance, just using the telephone)? Is something lost in not being able to hear a person’s voice? Are emoticons a good substitute or indicator of how a person feels? What about the effect of cell phones on family life (e.g., parents always on the phone to work, less time for kids), friendships, health, etc.?

Mobile phones are currently banned in all Australian state schools and many Catholic and independent schools around the country. This is part of a global trend over more than a decade to restrict phone use in schools.

Australian governments say banning mobile phones will reduce distractions in class , allow students to focus on learning , improve student wellbeing and reduce cyberbullying .

But previous research has shown there is little evidence on whether the bans actually achieve these aims.

Many places that restricted phones in schools before Australia did have now reversed their decisions. For example, several school districts in Canada implemented outright bans then revoked them as they were too hard to maintain. They now allow teachers to make decisions that suit their own classrooms.

A ban was similarly revoked in New York City , partly because bans made it harder for parents to stay in contact with their children.

What does recent research say about phone bans in schools?

We conducted a “scoping review” of all published and unpublished global evidence for and against banning mobile phones in schools.

Our review, which is pending publication, aims to shed light on whether mobile phones in schools impact academic achievement (including paying attention and distraction), students’ mental health and wellbeing, and the incidence of cyberbullying.

A scoping review is done when researchers know there aren’t many studies on a particular topic. This means researchers cast a very inclusive net, to gather as much evidence as possible.

Our team screened 1,317 articles and reports as well as dissertations from masters and PhD students. We identified 22 studies that examined schools before and after phone bans. There was a mix of study types. Some looked at multiple schools and jurisdictions, some looked at a small number of schools, some collected quantitative data, others sought qualitative views.

In a sign of just how little research there is on this topic, 12 of the studies we identified were done by masters and doctoral students. This means they are not peer-reviewed but done by research students under supervision by an academic in the field.

But in a sign of how fresh this evidence is, almost half the studies we identified were published or completed since 2020.

The studies looked at schools in Bermuda, China, the Czech Republic, Ghana, Malawi, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States. None of them looked at schools in Australia.

Academic achievement

Our research found four studies that identified a slight improvement in academic achievement when phones were banned in schools. However, two of these studies found this improvement only applied to disadvantaged or low-achieving students.

Some studies compared schools where there were partial bans against schools with complete bans. This is a problem because it confuses the issue.

But three studies found no differences in academic achievement, whether there were mobile phone bans or not. Two of these studies used very large samples. This masters thesis looked at 30% of all schools in Norway. Another study used a nationwide cohort in Sweden . This means we can be reasonably confident in these results.

Mental health and wellbeing

Two studies in our review, including this doctoral thesis , reported mobile phone bans had positive effects on students’ mental health. However, both studies used teachers’ and parents’ perceptions of students’ wellbeing (the students were not asked themselves).

Two other studies showed no differences in psychological wellbeing following mobile phone bans. However, three studies reported more harm to students’ mental health and wellbeing when they were subjected to phone bans.

The students reported they felt more anxious without being able to use their phone. This was especially evident in one doctoral thesis carried out when students were returning to school after the pandemic, having been very reliant on their devices during lockdown.

So the evidence for banning mobile phones for the mental health and wellbeing of student is inconclusive and based only on anecdotes or perceptions, rather than the recorded incidence of mental illness.

Bullying and cyberbullying

Four studies reported a small reduction in bullying in schools following phone bans, especially among older students. However, the studies did not specify whether or not they were talking about cyberbullying.

Teachers in two other studies, including this doctoral thesis , reported they believed having mobile phones in schools increased cyberbullying.

But two other studies showed the number of incidents of online victimisation and harassment was greater in schools with mobile phone bans compared with those without bans. The study didn’t collect data on whether the online harassment was happening inside or outside school hours.

The authors suggested this might be because students saw the phone bans as punitive, which made the school climate less egalitarian and less positive. Other research has linked a positive school climate with fewer incidents of bullying.

There is no research evidence that students do or don’t use other devices to bully each other if there are phone bans. But it is of course possible for students to use laptops, tablets, smartwatches or library computers to conduct cyberbullying.

Even if phone bans were effective, they would not address the bulk of school bullying. A 2019 Australian study found 99% of students who were cyberbullied were also bullied face-to-face.

What does this tell us?

Overall, our study suggests the evidence for banning mobile phones in schools is weak and inconclusive.

As Australian education academic Neil Selwyn argued in 2021 , the impetus for mobile phone bans says more about MPs responding to community concerns rather than research evidence.

Politicians should leave this decision to individual schools, which have direct experience of the pros or cons of a ban in their particular community. For example, a community in remote Queensland could have different needs and priorities from a school in central Brisbane.

Mobile phones are an integral part of our lives. We need to be teaching children about appropriate use of phones, rather than simply banning them. This will help students learn how to use their phones safely and responsibly at school, at home and beyond.

  The mobile industry witnessed a massive revolution with the Global System for Mobile communication’s (GSM) launch in Europe in 1991. With the introduction of Orbitel TPU 900, mobile phones were no longer for only business use. Mass production of these handsets made it easy for the common people to own a cost-effective consumer cell phone with a digital display. However, Nokia was the first company to produce cost-effective cell phones for the masses and launched Nokia 1011 in 1992.   

• Mobile phones went beyond calling 

  During 1992-1998, people witnessed a massive change in mobile phones’ features. Many cell phone companies introduced text messaging, downloadable ringtones, fun emojis, and built-in cameras during that time.   

• Feature phones with a splash of colors 

  Nokia was one of those companies that played an extraordinary role in the evolution of mobile phone technology. The first-ever mobile phone with a colorful display was launched by Siemens in 1997. In 1998, Nokia launched the first-ever fashion-oriented mobile phone series named “Xpress-on” with interchangeable covers. In 1999, the former produced a fully-colored feature phone named Nokia 7110. The most demanding feature of those cell phones was built-in cameras. In 2000, mobile phones with built-in cameras marked their existence in the world of photography. It almost changed people’s perspective that they can only click pictures with a camera. Gradually, cell phones started being used as an alternative to digital cameras and became the photographers’ favorite.   

• Mobile data revolution and more 

  In 2003, the 3G network was first introduced in the UK. It boosted the download speed up to 2MBPS. A company named RIM launched a mobile phone series named ‘BlackBerry’ that offered email facilities to the mass. Additionally, Sony-Ericsson Z1010 made video-calling immensely popular among the youth with its new front-facing camera.   

• When the Smartphone arrived 

  The year 2007 witnessed the revolutionary introduction of smartphones in the global market. Touchscreen cell phones gradually erased the traditional button method in phones.  Though the LG Prada series was the first touchscreen mobile phone in the market, the Apple iPhone series became successful in having a powerful brand value and superior touch screen potential. Smartphones became the center of modern life within a very short period. The following years have seen numerous extraordinary changes in smartphones’ features, including:  

• Introduction of 4G in 11 cities 
• Voice recognition feature from Google Voice 
• Apple launched Siri (A voice recognition device) in the market 
• Samsung added a built-in heart rate monitor to Galaxy S5 

  The ultimate Android and iPhone era (The present scenario) In today’s world, two of the most popular mobile models are iPhones by Apple and Android smartphones produced by a few renowned phone manufacturers, including Nokia, LG, HTC, Xiaomi, and Oppo. However, the first-ever Android phone was the ‘G1’ (launched in 2008) which had a slide-out keyboard and limited touchscreen access. During that time, Microsoft also decided to produce a brand new series of smartphones with their own windows operating system. Thus, they named the series “Windows Phone”.    The Android smartphones allow users to install third-party mobile applications that they can use for various purposes. For example, they can install WhatsApp and Facebook to communicate with their friends, Flipkart and amazon can be used for shopping online, Swiggy and Zomato for are there for ordering food online, or google maps can be used to navigate your way to a location. We can also install emailing apps, dating tools, word processors, and even video games on our smartphones. These smartphones include high-quality cameras that offer a larger-than-life experience of clicking extraordinary pictures and shooting incredible videos.   Mobile phones can also be used as safety tools. It is an easy way to ensure the safety of our loved ones. We can also track their locations through GPRS in case of any emergency. We can reach out for help in major circumstances like accidents or physical illness.   

• Multi-utility device

  Apart from easy communication facilities, mobile phones provide several other benefits. We can use cell phones to set reminders and alarms, make calculations, click pictures while traveling, set the daily work schedule via the calendar, shoot videos, and send emails. We can also use it as a torch by switching on the flashlight. Mobile phones also include a Bluetooth facility enabling us to transfer important files and documents from one device to another.    Nowadays, people even use mobile phones as wallets to make money payments. One can now easily transfer money from their bank account using different payment apps. Easy access to bank accounts and their past transactions has made banking easier, quick, and hassle-free. Besides all these uses, mobile phones can also be used for professional purposes.   Mobile phones have become a source of interruption in our lives. A mobile ring can distract us in between our studies or work and ruin our concentration.   

• Creating distance among loved ones 

  Nowadays, people have no time to spend with their loved ones. Many of them use phones even when they are with their close ones. That’s how mobile phones are creating a never-ending psychological distance between family members, relatives, friends, and other people.   

• Causes mental and physical health problems 

  Many researchers have linked excessive use of mobile phones to some serious mental and physical health consequences among every age group, including heart diseases, eyesight problems, nerve diseases, insomnia, internet addiction, behavioral changes, substance abuse, anxiety, depression, migraines, and even cancer. Additionally, it can have a negative effect on a child’s psychological growth and brain development.   

• Loss of privacy and money wastage 

  Losing privacy due to excessive use of mobile phones is a major concern among today’s youth. With the help of social media, anyone can know about your location, profession, family, and other private details that they can use for harmful purposes.
