Monthly Homework

) but many of the activities were "unstructured" and my parents just weren't following through with them. I needed something more structured that I could actually see was done. I used the concept of a monthly homework calendar but paired it with a packet for recording the work. I did include some "unstructured" assignments (like counting or singing) but there is one paper/pencil activity for each day. Each day has a specific page in the packet to complete. The skills reflected in the homework are based on the scope/sequence of Open Court phonics and our shared reading program. I send the complete packet home at the beginning of the month and have children return it each Friday so I can check that the work is being completed. This system has worked wonderfully! I have much better participation and it is far less time consuming for me.

Homework in Kindergarten: is it a good idea and how you should do it to make it valuable to your students and their families? Take a look at this monthly homework  for kindergarten printable and editable calendars .

Giving homework in kindergarten can be hard. You need parental involvement, and it can be difficult for some families to find time to complete it. One of my co-workers wanted a monthly calendar that students could do with their families. I created these editable monthly homework challenges so that families can complete the activities on their own time. They won’t need a lot of materials, and they can easily be done in a few minutes.

Keep reading to see what these are all about !

Homework for Kindergarten Printable Calendars

There are 16 challenges to complete every month. Some of them involve writing, some of the activities are hands-on. There is a mix of literacy, math and science challenges.  You only print and send home 1 page per month, no more worrying about photocopying a whole packet for each student.

They are editable!

I have made them editable so that you can change up the challenges to match up with what you are teaching that month. It is editable in PowerPoint, and all you have to do is type in the activity you want your students to complete.

Most asked questions:

Is this mandatory homework for your students? No. We don’t enforce homework for our students, if parents want something to work on at home, they can do these activities. I don’t believe in punishing kindergarten students for not doing their homework – that’s something out of their control.

What do you do when students bring back the completed homework calendar? We celebrate! We highlight their work to the rest of the class, I put a sticker on it and write an encouraging note and send it back home.

Do you have these available in Spanish also? I send my homework home in both English and Spanish.

' src=

I do not, but they are editable so you can change the activities to Spanish if you would like to use it!

I love this idea and I do want to try it in my classroom. I’m just curious on how you track it to see if they have been doing the things on the calendar. Honor system? Not much parent involvement in my school area. Just seeing how to get my parents and the student show me what they have done the work at home.

I don’t check to make sure all students do it. We do not have mandatory homework in kindergarten, so this is just for families that need ideas for home.

THE Best Way to Handle Kindergarten and Preschool Homework

Shared by Mary Catherine 29 Comments

Learn how to create a meaningful preschool homework plan for your students using a homework calendar. Be sure to check out the rest of my free preschool printables next!

Below I’ll share how to incorporate a preschool homework calendar into your plans. These homework activities are perfect for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten students.

Be sure to note that this isn’t a “traditional” homework plan. Not by a longshot! Instead, it’s focused on hands-on, age-appropriate activities (rather than inappropriate worksheets and such).

Families reading and building together with text that reads preschool homework

“Miss Mary Catherine, what about homework? Her brothers have homework most nights, and I could really use some help in that department.”

Questions like this one aren’t unusual at preschool and kindergarten Back-to-School Nights or Meet the Teacher gatherings. At least not for me.

Parents want the best when it comes to their children’s education, and it’s often assumed homework is an integral part of that.

But early childhood educators want to do what’s developmentally appropriate and best for their students – and research has shown that traditional homework doesn’t fit into that. So how to do we merge each of these viewpoints?

Table of Contents

Do We Really Need Preschool Homework?

As I mentioned above, I’ve noticed that many parents ask about homework. I think some people assume school and homework go hand-in-hand. I’m referring here to the traditional view of homework, with kids sitting down at the kitchen table to fill out pages and pages of worksheets.

I’m inclined to disagree with that, especially when it comes to early childhood students. Young kids need hands-on learning experiences , both at home and at school, to grasp important early learning concepts. I most definitely don’t think the traditional worksheet homework is appropriate for young kids.

Listening to books read by their parents, free play time at home, and maybe some additional hands-on learning activities are more along the lines of the kind of homework I recommend.

The BEST Way to Handle Kindergarten and Preschool Homework

So we’ve established that sit down, pencil to paper homework isn’t that great for preschool and kindergarten. How, then, should homework be handled?

My suggestion: create a preschool homework plan centered around monthly activity calendars.

Explain the research to the parents, and have a quick chat about developmentally appropriate practice . Stress the importance of down time after school, and encourage daily reading snuggled up with the kids.

At this point, parents might still want something more. That’s where the homework calendars come in.

Kindergarten and preschool homework calendars full of hands-on activities

Kindergarten and Preschool Homework Calendars

The printable homework calendars I’ve sent home are definitely not preschool worksheets . They include a variety of tasks that kids can do – sometimes with their families, and sometimes on their own. My goal is for my students, and their parents, to see how learning can take place in a wide variety of ways. Additionally, kiddos with older siblings love having their own “homework” to complete like their big brother or sister.

To put together homework calendars for your students, brainstorm ideas that cover topics such as:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Gross motor skills
  • Helping others
  • Self-help skills

Try to keep the daily activities simple, with some ideas the kids can do on their own and some they can try with their parents or siblings. Some of the calendar ideas can relate to your preschool themes , seasons or holidays, or everyday helping tasks.

These homework calendars can go home in their personalized folders at the beginning of the month, with the kids returning them at the end of the month. They can also just be used as suggestions when parents ask about homework for preschool kiddos.

Preschool Homework Ideas

As I mentioned earlier, using monthly calendars for preschool homework is NOT like traditional paper-and-pencil homework. The calendars are meant to be filled with developmentally-appropriate activities kids can do at home.

If you need some ideas to add to the calendars, here you go:

  • Go for a walk outside and count the trees.
  • Tell your family about what you did on the playground today.
  • Listen to a family member read a book.
  • Try to do 5 jumping jacks.
  • Draw a picture of your favorite animal.
  • Sing a song to your family.

As you can see, these are simple and very appropriate activities for young children. And none of them are focused on tracing the number 1 twenty times.

I’d love to hear your thoughts now! How do you handle preschool homework (or kindergarten homework)?

A Year’s Worth of Preschool Homework Calendars

I’m so excited to share with you how you can get a hold of the rest of the calendars now! I’ve received a lot of wonderful emails asking for an entire year’s worth of calendars. Thanks so much for reaching out – I love hearing from you!

So here it is – a full year’s worth of editable homework calendars. It’s a set that includes homework calendars for every month of the year. Each calendar is an editable printable, and there are three versions:

  • One has seasonal clip art,

Then print out the calendar and share with your students’ parents. You’re welcome to leave everything the way I’ve written it too. That’s what I am loving about editable PDFs – the flexibility of customizing documents.

Supplies to Keep at Home

Our homework calendars have some great examples of short learning prompts to give to challenge your children with. On top of those prompts, I think it’s really important to spend quality time playing with your children each day as well.

But it can be difficult to bring out our-inner child to play with our actual child. That’s why I’ve created this list of some things to play with your kids. Check it out below!

I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.

  • Build with blocks
  • Play with toy vehicles
  • Pretend play with various play sets
  • Play dress up with costumes and masks
  • Work a puzzle
  • Play age-appropriate games with the whole family
  • Bounce, throw, and kick playground balls back and forth
  • Color in coloring books or draw pictures
  • Read stories
  • Draw with sidewalk chalk
  • Create crafts
  • Let your child decide!

Just follow your child’s lead and the two of you are sure to have a blast! Remember – your child will cherish any time you spend with them. They’ll cherish that quality time even more when you’re investing in them and doing something they love. So don’t worry about embarrassing yourself or looking silly. In my book, the sillier – the better!

Any early childhood teacher that has had child development knows that that kind of pressure on young children is not age appropriate. I would not put recommend a preschool or kindergarten that required their students to do real homework.

I have sent home games that children really like and want to share with parents. I have also suggested games and activities that parents can do with their child to help develop a skill but I always emphasized the need to be careful not to force a child to do an activity.

July 31, 2017 at 11:21 am

Love your ideas! That’s why I like the activity calendars – suggestions for families but no stress if it gets done or not. Definitely no traditional homework (I honestly don’t like it for elementary school either).

Confessions of a Homeschooler

Kindergarten Calendar Worksheets

Good morning to all you kindergarten teachers out there! I have another fun free kindergarten printable worksheet for you today! To help Tinker Bell with her number writing practice, I created some blank printable seasonal calendar worksheets .

kindergarten seasonal calendar worksheets

–> Click here to download the Kindergarten Monthly Calendar Worksheets <–

(Downloading: If you have troubles downloading, RIGHT click on the download link and select “SAVE LINK AS”. You will then be prompted to save the file to your computer.)

I only show a few calendars above, but this download includes 17 different calendar choices!  While I am located in the United States, I know I have several international followers as well so I created calendar themes that will fit the needs of everyone no matter your location. (Or at least I tried to anyway! Let me know if you need a different image and I’ll try to accommodate.)

How do you use the Monthly Calendar Printables?

Each month I pick a new Calendar based on our season, and have her write in the number for each day. I keep the calendar worksheet in her math workbox and so she just adds a new number every morning. On Mondays she adds the numbers for the prior Saturday and Sunday to her page. When that month is completed, we pull out a new month worksheet and start all over!

These monthly calendar worksheets great practice writing numbers, counting, and also helps them get used to seeing a calendar, and noting what day today is, what yesterday was, and what tomorrow will be. And even what month of the year it is.

I hope you enjoy the Kindergarten Monthly Calendar Worksheets !

These activities are part of my K4 Curriculum geared towards kindergartners. If you have a preschooler you might want to check out my Letter of the Week Curriculum , click on the images below to see more activities.

Thank you for these! This is exactly what I was looking for, and I love that my kinder gets to write the numbers in herself!

Hello I am searching for your I Can Write My Name worksheet for February through June please.

The I Can Write My Name worksheets are part of my Daily Learning Notebook, you can find it here: https://store.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=70_104

Dear Erica- I ordered your K4 curriculum for the second time recently. This is the second time the CD is not reading for me, my computer tells me it is blank? I also purchased the Letter of the week curriculum and I have no problems with it. Can you advise? Kim

Thanks for being so kind and generous with your printables. I love these calendars and hope they help me teach my kiddos about the months of the year. Again, thank you so much!

Thank you so much for not having the names of the months on the calendars! Here in the Southern Hemisphere, January hits the scorching 100s, so having things with snowflakes on it is fairly confusing for my four year old.

Thank you so much. As a first year Kindergarten teacher with little in the way of budget at my school, and nothing in the way of time, I really appreciate that you have made these freely available. I am adding one to the homework pack I am sending home with my students for winter break.

Greetings from Australia! I have been searching for some suitable worksheets and ideas and found them all right here! Thank you very much

Thank you so much for this calendar. We are moving, somewhat unexpectedly, mid-year to another state and I have the privilege of homeschooling my children for a few months. However, I’m scrambling to put good, solid work together and I came across your website…and you are giving this planner away for free!! Thank you for your generosity.

Do you still have the calendars with the traceable numbers? I purchased the kindergarten book with the hope they were in the bundle. They appeared to be in bundle picture. My 4&5 year old are just learning to write numbers so I was hoping for the traceable version.

Yes, I update the calendars and put them on my blog free for download every month, you can also get the updated 2020-2021 calendars in the Preschool Daily Learning notebook.

Free Printable Worksheets for Kindergarten

Kindergarten worksheets are a wonderful learning tool for educators and students to use. This is why we have and will continue to create hundreds of free kindergarten worksheets that are designed to fit into a standard kindergarten curriculum . The main focus of our kindergarten website is to provide free educational resources. In these difficult economic times, we believe kindergarten teachers and parents can benefit greatly from our printable kindergarten worksheets.

What Free Kindergarten Worksheets Would You Like to See?

We have conducted extensive research on the types of kindergarten worksheets teachers and parents use the most. It is not a perfect science and we know we can always be doing a better job to serve you. If you have suggestions on what kind of kindergarten worksheets we should create or what categories we should expand on, we would love to hear from you. Is there a kindergarten worksheet that you just love and would like to see more of? Please let us know using our contact webpage, via email, on Facebook, or through Twitter. Thank you for your time in advance!

The First Kindergarten Website to Utilize Modern Web Technology

Our entire collection of kindergarten worksheets have been made into a free web app powered by HTML5. HTML5 does not require the Flash plug-in that most educational websites use to provide interactive content. This means that our kindergarten worksheets will work almost anywhere. Kindergartners can now complete the educational worksheets on the iPad and other forward-thinking devices. The free kindergarten web app we have developed makes use of the iPad's multi-touch feature. Kids can use their fingers to draw, write, and solve problems directly on the free kindergarten worksheets. Teachers and parents can then print the completed kindergarten worksheet. Our free online kindergarten app also works on desktop and laptop computers running modern web browsers like Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer 9+.

The Importance of a Good Early Childhood Education

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, having the firm foundation of early childhood education will ensure children's success in life. It is also imperative that students develop critical thinking and problem solving skills during their first year in school as well as establish an appreciation of who they are in a social society. Teachers are able to implement these worksheets in a variety of early childhood lesson plans. Even though our "kindergarten worksheets" are designed for kindergarten students, they are also useful for children that are in preschool or first grade. These diverse kindergarten worksheets will create a fun learning environment that ultimately assist in cultivating valuable critical thinking, cultural, and linguistic skills.

Kindergarten Worksheets to Print, Download, and Use Online

Our fun kindergarten worksheets are broken down into four main areas. They are math, English, general learning, and holiday worksheets. These categories are then divided into different subjects so that parents and teachers can easily find the free printable kindergarten worksheets they are looking for. The kindergarten math worksheets section includes addition, subtraction, counting, fractions, place value, graphs, measurements, pattern words, and numbers. The Kindergarten English worksheets section offers reading, alphabet, writing, phonics, vocabulary, sight words, opposites, rhyming words, and spelling. The general learning section provides science, Spanish, social studies, dinosaurs, health, zoo, foreign languages, butterflies, and kindergarten coloring activities. The last section is our kindergarten holiday worksheets. This includes Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Halloween. We also offer summer, winter, spring, and fall printable worksheets. All of the kindergarten worksheets on our website can be printed out, downloaded for later use, or used directly online. Anyway you choose to use our free kindergarten worksheets, we hope they help enhance the students' appreciation for education.

Kindergarten Homeschool Schedule (includes a free printable)

Kindergarten Homeschool Schedule, pic of activities

This Kindergarten Homeschool schedule is ideal for most families. It’s short and simple to follow, It doesn’t require a full day of teaching. Homeschooling kindergarten can be done in less than three hours a day and that includes a short break and circle time.

What follows is a daily kindergarten homeschool schedule idea for you to follow. I’ve also included a free printable if you’d like to download one for yourself. There are also ideas for creating a flexible homeschool schedule in this post too.

This post contains affiliate links.

Daily Kindergarten Homeschool Schedule

7:30-8:45am-breakfast & chores.

Whatever time your kindergartener has breakfast, keep it set at the same time everyday (at least during the school week). This is a good start time allowing your child to have breakfast and if this applies to you, this is also a good time to do some religious reading to your kids a the kitchen table.

After breakfast your kindergartener could complete some simple chores such as making the bed and wiping the kitchen table and chairs. It’s not about perfection. It’s about responsibility and order. You could assign 1-2 chores daily (the same ones each day of the week for consistency).

This may be the perfect time to put any dishes away that were in the dishwasher from the night before, clear out breakfast dishes,  and take out any frozen food from the freezer if needed for dinner.

9:00-9:30am-Circle time (calendar, weather, read aloud)

Circle time is great because if you have more than one child, you could include all the kids in circle time. You can make it real simple and do the calendar (today’s date, yesterday, and tomorrow), and then talk about the weather. Finally, include a read aloud that could be enjoyed. Most Kindergarten kids don’t mind repetition, so it’s okay to read the same book more than once in the same week!

9:30-10:15am- Language Arts – (Reading/Phonics Lesson)

Reading, Writing, and Math are the core of any kindergarten curriculum so it’s ideal to do this first in the day. You never know if things come up that will derail you from your schedule. Keeping the core subjects as early as possible works best for most families. I do discuss alternatives later on in this article.

You want to be sure you have a reading component here. I discuss what I use in my article, best kindergarten homeschool curriculum .

10:15-10:30am-Snack Break (15 minutes)

A quick bathroom break, snack, and stretch, is usually all that’s needed to recharge before getting into the next subject.

10:30-11:00am-Math

A quick lesson (if there’s a new concept in the day’s workbook), and working through two pages of math can be done in half an hour or less. I don’t recommend doing more than two pages of math at the kindergarten level. It’s just the right amount of work for most kindergarteners. We use Horizons Math for Kindergarten.

11:00-11:15am-Handwriting Practice

This part of the day could be done somewhat independently. This time is dedicated to practice forming letters properly. You could even have an older child oversee this part to free this time up for you. If you have other kids, you could use this time to help them with another subject too.

11:15-:11:45am-Social Studies, Science , or Art

For the subjects of social studies, science, and art, it’s best to alternate between the subjects. This means you don’t do social studies and science every day. You pick one and do it that day. For example, Monday and Tuesday could be social studies, Wednesday and Thursday could be science,  and art could be on Fridays.

This is what I would recommend for Kindergarten and you don’t need to spend more than half an hour at this level.

Reading a good book on a particular topic and writing a summary sentence would be sufficient. I have some more recommendations in this post .

12:00pm-Lunch

Done with homeschool for the day! This is one of the joys of homeschooling. For the little ones, you could really be done by noon.

Afternoon Free-Play Activities

If the weather permits, after lunch would be a great time to get outdoors and have the whole family get some physical activity time. Whether it is just in the backyard, or a nearby park, or even to run some errands, getting outside daily is important, even for a short while.

After lunch, I tend to prefer having some quiet time activities first for an hour or so, and then go outside if the weather permits.

The afternoon is great for kindergarteners to do some puzzles, play games, listen to nursery rhymes, play music for dancing , play with playdough, coloring, drawing, and any sort of imaginative play.

If your child is the type that loves to do school all day (some do!) and would like to do some type of worksheet, choosing a logic activity from this workbook is an excellent idea.

But really, this is the time for your kids to mostly play!

Flexible Kindergarten Homeschool Schedules and Tips

Time of day.

While I have presented a kindergarten homeschool schedule that is ideal for most families that homeschool, you don’t have to stick to that one exactly as it is. This is the beauty of homeschooling!

If you prefer to start a little later in the day that is okay too. Just know that that will mean, you will finish later too.

Perhaps you prefer to break up your homeschool schedule in two parts- morning work and afternoon work.

Whatever works best for your family.

Keep in mind that most homeschool families have a preference for homeschooling in the morning because kids are most relaxed and not tired out from the day yet.

How Many Days a Week Should I Homeschool Kindergarten?

Many homeschoolers, including myself, homeschool 4 days a week. Others do choose to homeschool 5 days a week.  If you are homeschooling a Kindergartener year-round, 3 days a week could work too.

Homeschoolers often choose to homeschool 4 days a week so that the 5th day could be used for getting together with a homeschool group for half a day..

If you haven’t already looked for one, start researching in your area for a homeschool group your kindergartener could be a part of at least once a week.

Should I Homeschool Year-Round?

Some families prefer to homeschool year-round while others prefer to follow a traditional school year. I personally prefer a year-round schedule but with a few short winter breaks and a summer break.

What is best for your family?

This is something to think about when creating and deciding on a kindergarten homeschool schedule.

Tips and Tricks For Staying on a Set Homeschool Schedule

  • set a timer – If you know that certain subjects can easily drag on, for example math, set a timer for when you should be ending that part of the day. You may instead just want to set your timer at the start time for homeschool if you find it helps to make sure everyone starts on time.
  • get older kids to help younger ones – Think about what tasks in your homeschool day could be delegated, if any.
  • schedule independent work for older kids – while working with your kindergartener, if you have older homeschoolers, schedule homeschool subjects that they could do independently such as handwriting, typing, grammar exercises, or memory work.
  • stay consistent as much as possible – especially for little ones, the more you can establish a routine of following a homeschool schedule, they better it will be for your kindergartener and you too! Kids thrive with a routine because they know what is generally expected of them.

Free Printable Homeschool Kindergarten Schedule

If you’d like a template to map out your own homeschool kindergarten schedule, I’ve made a template that you can download for free! You don’t have to sign up for anything to get it either. Simply click here to view and print!

Final Thoughts

Your homeschool kindergarten schedule does not need to be long, complicated, or rigid. A short and simple schedule that allows for flexibility will do wonders for your homeschool! By focusing on the core subjects of reading, writing and math, with some occasional additions in other subjects, your kindergartener can still find lots of playtime in their homeschool day!

40 ENGAGING Free Kindergarten Worksheets for School and Home Learning

kindergarten monthly homework

With everyone home on an extended “vacation”, lots of teachers and families are looking for free kindergarten worksheets. But little kids don’t like to sit and do worksheets all day! (nor should they).

You don’t want to add to their screen time either.

Enter hands-on worksheets and printables!

In a classroom setting, these can involve special materials that families might not have at home. To help out, I’ve rounded up a selection of some super engaging worksheets and printable activities that use items families are likely to have on hand.

Free Early Literacy Worksheets & Printables

Many of these free kindergarten worksheets and activities are also perfect for academically advanced preschoolers.

Printable Alphabet Activities

Working on letter sounds, letter recognition, and writing letters doesn’t have to be boring with these fun printable activities!

alphabet worksheets and printables

Clockwise from the top right:

Ducks-in-a-row letter matching worksheets  – I show these being used with do-a-dot markers, but children could also use cotton balls and paint, or just color with crayons.

Circus Play Dough and Letter Mats – a fun, creative way for kids to practice pre-reading and letter knowledge skills.

Easter Egg Letter Recognition worksheets – color these with crayon and then paint with watercolor – or just color the whole thing.

Spring Alphabet Worksheets – these are designed to be filled in with stamp markers (a.k.a. emoji markers), but you can also use a cotton swab and paint. Kids LOVE these!

Transportation Alphabet Playdough Mats – another fun playdough mat for learning ABCs, sure to appeal to preschoolers.

kindergarten literacy printables

Bunny Hop Alphabet Board Game – Get the kids hopping while they name letters and letter sounds.

Alphabet Chart Activities – print one or two color pages and use it for several different letter practice activities.

Lego Duplo Animal Alphabet Cards – bring along reluctant learners and enthusiastic builders with these clever free printable cards.

Early Reading and Writing Printables

4 Seasons Emergent Readers – these free printable booklets can be personalized with your child’s name to make reading time extra-relevant.

The Little Red Hen Activities – practice fluency with the free emergent reader and letter sounds with a cute printable activity.

Robot Sight Word Game – type in the sight words your child is learning. Or, you could even use it to teach letter identification, letter sounds, or math facts. There are several other themed game boards available too, including a Unicorn and a Dinosaur version.

Sequencing Cards – story sequencing is an important reading comprehension skill, and these cards are an engaging way to practice it.

Letter Collage – Make it easy for little learners to “write” with these printable alphabet pages

Free PreK/K Math Worksheets & Printables

Some of these are more for preschool or struggling kindergartners, while others are more advanced or come in several levels.

Printable Continent Puzzle – okay, this is a puzzle, not a worksheet. But if you want to fit in some hands-on geography this is a fun way to teach about the continents.

Not pictured, but these look like good free resources for kindergarten social studies:

Needs vs. Wants Worksheet – cut, sort, and paste the needs and wants cards in this kindergarten social studies activity.

Community Helpers Puzzles – match community workers with the tools they use, with help from some simple sentences.

Community Helper Hats – print out these adorable hats for some educational pretend play!

Hungry Caterpillar Hole-Punching – retell the favorite story while working on fine motor skills. Not everyone has a hole punch, but for those that do this is super fun!

Dot Dabber Butterfly worksheets – If you have a kid who loves using bingo dot markers, they won’t want to miss dabbing on wings to these butterflies.

Make a Face – print out this simple page and fill in the face in one of the 5 suggested ways from materials you have at home.

Lion’s Mane Cutting Activity – use this cute free printable template for some fun scissors practice.

  1. Monthly Homework

Monthly Homework. About 6 years ago I decided to simplify my homework program. Rather than giving weekly homework packets (mostly worksheets), I decided to try giving monthly assignments. I had tried this in the past (using the monthly calendars from the book Kindergarten Homework) but many of the activities were "unstructured" and my parents ...
