Dedication, acknowledgements, & preface

Dedication, Acknowledgements, and Preface sections are all optional pages. But, what is the difference between these three?

Dedication — A personal tribute to someone or a group of people. Example: "To my parents."

Acknowledgements — A professional tribute to a person or people who helped you with the thesis. Example: "I wish to thank my thesis advisor for the hours of help in the lab making sure the experiments were set up properly and guiding me through the thesis process."

Preface ( sometimes confused with Foreward or Prologue ) — A very rarely included section that details why you are qualified to write about your topic of your thesis or why you became interested in the topic (for example, an anecdote about a childhood incident that led you to become interested in the topic). Do not confuse this with the literature review; this is more of a personal story.

The Purpose of Acknowledgements

The acknowledgement section of a thesis or dissertation is where you recognise and thank those who supported you during your PhD. This can be but is not limited to individuals, institutions or organisations.

Although your acknowledgements will not be used to evaluate your work, it is still an important section of your thesis. This is because it can have a positive (or negative for that matter) influence the perception of your reader before they even reach the main body of your work.

Who Should I Acknowledge?

Acknowledgements for a PhD thesis will typically fall into one of two categories – professional or personal.

Within these categories, who you thank will ultimately be your decision. However, it’s imperative that you pay special attention to the ‘professional’ group. This is because not thanking someone who has played an important role in your studies, whether it be intentional or accidental, will more often than not be seen as a dismissal of their efforts. Not only would this be unfair if they genuinely helped you, but from a certain political aspect, it could also jeopardise any opportunities for future collaborations .

Professional Acknowledgements

This may include, but is not limited to:

• Funding bodies/sponsorship providers
• Supervisors
• Research group and lab assistants
• Research participants
• Proofreaders

Personal Acknowledgements

• Key family members and friends
• Individuals who inspired you or directly influenced your academic journey
• Anyone else who has provided personal support that you would like to mention

It should be noted that certain universities have policies which state only those who have directly supported your work, such as supervisors and professors, should be included in your acknowledgements. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you read your university guidelines before writing this section of your thesis.

How to Write Acknowledgements for PhD Thesis

When producing this section, your writing style can be more informal compared to the rest of your thesis. This includes writing in first person and using more emotive language. Although in most cases you will have complete freedom in how you write this section of your thesis, it is still highly advisable to keep it professional. As mentioned earlier, this is largely because it will be one of the first things your assessors will read, and so it will help set the tone for the rest of your work.

In terms of its structure, acknowledgements are expected to be ordered in a manner that first recognises the most formal support before moving onto the less formal support. In most cases, this follows the same order that we have outlined in the ‘Who Should I Thank’ section.

When thanking professionals, always write out their full name and provide their title. This is because although you may be on a first-name basis with them, those who read your thesis will not. By providing full names and titles, not only do you help ensure clarity, but it could also indirectly contribute to the credibility of your thesis should the individual you’re thanking be well known within your field.

If you intend to include a list of people from one institution or organisation, it is best to list their names in alphabetical order. The exception to this is when a particular individual has been of significant assistance; here, it would be advisable to list them.

How Long Should My Acknowledgements Be?

Acknowledgements vary considerably in length. Some are a single paragraph whilst some continue for up to three pages. The length of your acknowledgement page will mostly depend on the number of individuals you want to recognise.

As a general rule, try to keep your acknowledgements section to a single page. Although there are no word limits, creating a lengthy acknowledgements section dilutes the gratitude you’re trying to express, especially to those who have supported you the most.

Where Should My Acknowledgements Go?

In the vast majority of cases, your acknowledgements should appear directly after your abstract and before your table of contents.

However, we highly advise you to check your university guidelines as a few universities set out their own specific order which they will expect you to follow.

Plus, the people you thank are often deeply moved by being included—some even go so far as to frame the acknowledgments. Aim to make yours sincere, memorable and something that people will be touched by.

First things first: who should you include in your dissertation acknowledgments? If you’re not sure who to thank, try the brainstorming technique to generate some ideas. Consider these two approaches:

• Make a list of everyone, both professional and personal, who was involved at any point during your work on your dissertation, and then thin down the list from there.
• Make a list of the pivotal aspects of your process and think about who was involved and how they helped.

As you select the people and groups to include in your dissertation acknowledgments, keep in mind that it’s essential to acknowledge your supervisor and anyone else with a visible connection to your work.

It’s an unfortunate reality that not every supervisor goes above and beyond to provide feedback and guidance to the students they are supposed to supervise. However, leaving them out, even if you personally felt disappointed by their involvement or lack thereof, could be seen as a snub.

You should end up with a fairly short list of people to thank. While being mindful of professional etiquette and personal feelings, be choosy about who makes the final cut since your acknowledgments should be limited to no more than a page.

Now that you have your list of people and groups to thank, it’s time to start writing. Before your first pen or keystroke, however, check your university’s guidelines as your institution may have specific rules around what can and cannot be included.

The standard practice is to begin with the formal and then progress to the informal, so the first people to mention would be:

• supervisors
• committee members
• other professional contacts

Use their full names and titles and go into brief detail about how they contributed to your work.

Once those are done, you can move on to the personal thanks, which can include friends, family, even pets. If you are so inclined, it is also considered appropriate to thank God or make mention of spiritual support.

You may also choose to inject a little humor at this point, but don’t get carried away and definitely don’t include sarcasm or critical comments of any kind, including self-critical ones. Remember that the acknowledgments precede your dissertation, so you want to be taken seriously.

A couple more basics that are essential when creating your acknowledgments:

• Position: Acknowledgments should be placed after the title page and before the abstract.
• Perspective: Write from the first-person perspective and speak in your own voice.

First, you need to come up with a list of people you want to thank in your dissertation acknowledgments. As a next step, begin with the formal and then progress to the informal, so the first people to mention would be supervisors, mentors, committees, and other professional contacts. Then, you can move on to the personal thanks, which can include friends, family, even pets.

Who you acknowledge in your dissertation is ultimately up to you. You should, however, thank your supervisor and anyone else with a visible connection to your work. When you have finally completed the gruelling yet wonderful process of writing a book, short story , dissertation, etc., you are then faced with the difficult decision of dedicating this source of all your hard work to someone special. Here are some helpful tips to ease your anxiety and assist you in writing a dedication page.

Picking a person 

The most difficult part of writing this piece of front matter is choosing who you would like to dedicate your work to. Some writers may find it to be the most difficult part of the whole process. When choosing who to write your dedication for, think about the process you just went through and who helped you get through it. This could include a variety of people, including a parent, sibling, or other family member, a spouse or partner, a friend, a supervisor, a colleague, or even a pet. This is a very personal choice and there is no wrong decision.

Naming names

After you have decided who you will write your dedication for, you must decide how you are going to identify them. This will be based on your own personal preference and what is appropriate, according to your relationship with that person. The identification could vary from formal to informal.

On the formal end of the spectrum, your dedication could be addressed to Dr. So and So, Mr. X, or even Mother and Father. In between formal and informal, there are options like Mom, Dad, My sister, My friend, a person’s first and last name (no title), etc. On the informal side, you could use the first name or nickname of someone you know.

Reason for the dedication

The next component in writing your dedication is explaining why you chose this person. Many authors provide a reason for their dedication selections. As with the whole dedication process, this is an extremely personal and subjective decision. The dedication could simply be: "For my mom"; others may choose to explain their decision: "For my mom; without her I would not be here." You may want to write a funny anecdote about the person, an experience you shared, or even a private joke shared only by the two of you. As seen in our example dedication page, there are many types of dedications, each with it's own style. Your reason is completely dependent on your personality and your relationship with the person to whom you are dedicating your work.

Addressing the dedication

There are many ways you can address your dedication. You could write, "I dedicate this book to …", "This is dedicated to …", "To: …", "For: …", or simply just start writing your dedication without any formal address. It should be on its own page so everyone will get the hint that it is a dedication page, even if there isn't any formal address. Take into consideration the person you have chosen to dedicate your work to, your personality, and the formality of your relationship and the address will follow suit.

Alternative dedications

It has been extremely popular over the years to write a dedication page using alternative formats. Authors have used poems or funny anecdotes to express their gratitude. In the past, many dedications were often written in the style of a formal letter.

The most important things to remember when writing a dedication are to keep it simple, concise, and ensure that it truly reflects your personality and your relationship with the person the dedication is for. Writing Your Dedication and Acknowledgements

When it comes to writing a thesis, the chapters get most of our attention – and so they should! They are the bulk of the thesis, and they contain the actual research. But there are other sections to think about as well, and two of them can be particularly fun to write.

The dedication and acknowledgements pages are where you can show your love and gratitude to the people who have helped you to achieve your goals. They tend to be less prescribed than other sections, so you have a little freedom to get creative in the way you express yourself!

While they might seem similar, there is a difference between the dedications and the acknowledgements. The dedication, as the name suggests, allows you to dedicate your thesis to someone (or multiple people). This is quite a personal matter, and dedications are often made to family members, spouses, friends, or community groups.

The acknowledgements page, by contrast, allows you to express thanks for specific contributions, and often features people that the author knows professionally as well as personally. If a person or group helped you by giving advice, funding, mentorship, editorial assistance, or practical support, it’s a good idea to give them a shout-out in the acknowledgements. This is more than just a courtesy – it’s an important part of maintaining your relationships by formally recognising the people and organisations who have made a contribution to your work.

As an example – I dedicated my PhD thesis to several members of my family, and wrote short personal notes about their contributions. In my acknowledgements section, I thanked my supervisor, a mentor, a friend who provided technical advice during my research, and my scholarship provider.

My dedication and acknowledgements sections were fairly conventional, but that doesn’t mean yours have to be! I’ve heard of writers dedicating their thesis to their pets, their computers, and even their local barista. There have even been rumours of one acknowledgements page which included a coupon for a free beer for anyone whose name was listed!

Other scholars have been known to thank:

• Public transport providers “for making the task of writing in buses and trains such an enjoyable exercise” ( source )
• The “spell-check function of Microsoft Word, without whom ‘institution’ would be misspelled differently 197 times” ( source )
• “The U.S. Immigration Service under the Bush administration, whose visa background security check forced [the author] to spend two months (following an international conference) in a third country, free of routine obligations” ( source )

One enterprising paleontologist even proposed to his girlfriend via the acknowledgements section of his journal article. (She said yes, apparently.)

So if you haven’t already, have a go at drafting your dedication and acknowledgements pages. After all, it’s not often you can gush about your favourite people while still technically being productive!

2024 Awards Day

The College of Nursing is proud to celebrate the service, scholarship, leadership and character of our outstanding students each spring.

On April 18 th , the University of South Carolina hosted the annual Student Awards Day on the Horseshoe lawn. This tradition is a celebration of the outstanding achievements of our remarkable students. The College of Nursing recognizes those who have demonstrated excellence in academics, research, service, clinical performance, leadership and community engagement. The awards given this year are as follows: 

Outstanding Research and Scholarship Award: Sydney Reichardt

This award is given to the student who consistently contributed to growing their knowledge of research and scholarship in nursing science.

Sydney Reichardt began working as the ACORN Center Undergraduate Research Scholar as a first-year student. Her contributions to the work are often related to having great insights from a younger generational perspective. She presented significant insights into smartwatch technology at several conferences and is co-author on a manuscript published in 2023 JMIR F ormative Research . Reichardt conducted her own research on quality of life and depressive symptoms in people with POTS . She is building on that work for her honor s thesis and received a South Carolina Honors College grant to support her efforts. Most recently, she presented a poster at the Southern Nurses Research Society conference.

Outstanding Service to the College of Nursing: Claire Powers

This award is given to the student who has consistently volunteered time for the improvement of the college, university, and the nursing profession.  

Claire Powers has played a crucial part as the Community Health Director to keep USC-SNA members active in the community by encouraging nursing professionalism through volunteer activities. Powers coordinated American Red Cross blood drives, Harvest Hope food drives, and Be The Match bone marrow registrations She also worked with the College of Nursing on events to support VA Hospital and Prisma’s Children’s Hospital patients. Throughout the semester Powers organized small groups to volunteer at other organizations such as Midlands Orphan Relief and Harvest Hope’s food pantry.  

  Outstanding Undergraduate Clinical Performance Award: Payton Evans

This award is presented to a student who has displayed evidence of a high level of critical thinking in the clinical area and/or extraordinary patient-centered care.  

Payton Evans ’ dedication to the field is evident in her role as a n urse extern at MUSC Lancaster, where she excel led in the ir Emergency Department. Her peers in the ED recognize d her as an exceptional Certified Nursing Assistant, highlighting her strong work ethic and compassionate approach to patient care. Furthermore, Evans received positive feedback from her instructors highlighting her exceptional clinical skills and commitment to excellence. 

Outstanding Undergraduate Community Service Award: Zoe Bowers    

This award is given for evidence of sustained community service either within a group or individually.  

Zoe Bowers was presented this award for her dedication to serving her community, both within and beyond the university. As a leader within the Student Nurses Association (SNA) at Lancaster, Bowers has held various positions, highlighting her commitment to fostering a supportive environment for her peers. Additionally, she has played a pivotal role as an incoming first-year BSN Good Samaritan Scholarship mentor , serving as a vital community liaison and offering invaluable gui dance t o incoming students. Bowers impact extends to academic support, where she served as an Academic Success Tutor play ing a key role in initiating the Health Science Studio approa ch for nur sing students. Beyond her academic responsibilities, she generously volunteers her time to assist with rec ruitme nt events, including J unior Scholars, Open House events, and Simulation lab tours, highlighting her commitment to inspiring future generations of nurses.  

Outstanding Undergraduate Leadership Award: Natalie Trimble  

This award is given to the outstanding student who has consistently been recognized by peers, faculty, and organizations as an excellent leader.

Natalie Trimble has been active in student government holding multiple positions, including the College of Nursing’s Delegation Chair, Chair of the Health and Safety Committee and first nursing major in an executive position as Speaker of the Student Senate. Trimble served as secretary, vice president, and president of Cocky’s Canine PAALS, and vice president of membership for Omicron Delta Kappa. She also served as a guest speaker in the SCHC 279 course, where she shared tips for success with first-year Smart Start Honors Nursing students . Trimble also attended   t he American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) ’ s 2022 Student Policy Summit .  

The Undergraduate Nursing Impact Award: Kelsey Dailey

This award is given to the student who contributes to the development of nursing's mission of advocacy to support health equity and social justice, particularly for vulnerable populations.  

Kelsey Dailey participated in the Graduation with Leadership Distinction program engaging in an extrinsic experience at Women's Health Hopkins in Hopkins, SC . H er work with Preventative and Prophylactic Women’s Health, specifically providing mental health screenings, education, and resources for underinsured and uninsured pregnant patients during prenatal visits , was presented at Discover USC. This collaborative experience helped her to understand the impact one person can have on their community. 

Academic Excellence Award: Darby Killman

This award is given to a traditional senior student with the highest institutional GPA based on the highest institutional credit hours earned at USC. Along with Darby, six other students were recognized to graduate with an overall GPA of 4.0: Erin Carson, Claxton-Grace Caswell, Bailey Goldschmidt, Claire Powers, Claire Stone, and Sophia Young.

Usu earns seven competition wins at regional asce conference.

The Utah State University student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers made good use of their home turf advantage—placing in seven out of eight events they competed in at this year’s Intermountain Southwest Student Symposium.

Events took place across the USU campus, including the concrete canoe races at Hyrum Reservoir. Roughly 500 students, faculty and volunteers from 16 schools traveled to Logan from the Western U.S. to participate in this annual regional event.

Timber Strong: 1st Place

The Timber-Strong challenge has students design and construct a two-story wooden building that is sustainable, aesthetically pleasing and durable.

A more recent addition to ASCE student competitions, the Timber-Strong challenge has students design and construct a two-story wooden building that is sustainable, aesthetically pleasing and durable. This is USU’s second time participating and second time taking home the top prize.

This year’s theme was “Big Blue’s Barn,” featuring a spot for our beloved mascot to hang out in between football games.

Surveying: 1st place

The surveying competition requires students to use standard field equipment and procedures to solve common problems encountered in the industry. The team had five tasks: 1. Create a topographic map with the provided data and present the map, 2. Record distance based on steps, 3. Use a level and a measuring rod to measure different elevations down to one specific point, 4. Use a total station to stake the corners of a building based on distance and angles, and 5. With the given data, calculate where cuts and fills will be needed for a sewer line. This is the third year in a row that USU students have secured 1st place.

Steel Bridge: 1st Place

The Student Steel Bridge Competition challenges students to extend their classroom knowledge to a practical and hands-on steel-design project.

The Student Steel Bridge Competition challenges students to extend their classroom knowledge to a practical and hands-on steel-design project that grows their interpersonal and professional skills, encourages innovation, and fosters impactful relationships between students and industry professionals. Each student team must develop a concept for a scale-model steel bridge to span approximately 20 feet and hold 2,500 lbs. There are time constraints set in place, and bridges are load-tested, weighed and judged on aesthetics. Returning steel bridge participant Isaac Hilton captained the team.

Construction Institute: 1st Place

The construction institute, a new addition to the symposium, has teams compete to solve a modern-day construction issue.

Teams are presented with a modern-day construction challenge and are given a few hours to prepare and present a solution. This was a new addition to the competitions this year.

Non-Technical Paper: 1st Place

The non-technical paper presentation challenges students to write on an unfamiliar topic. This year, the theme was on the ethical considerations of AI in civil engineering.

Students submitted 2,000-word papers on how an engineer balances regulations and ethics. The paper had to be nominated by the faculty advisor of each chapter. This year the paper was presented by Katie Andersen on the ethical considerations of AI in civil engineering.

Concrete Canoe: 2nd Place

The concrete canoe competition provides students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience by building a canoe out of concrete to test their concrete mix designs and project management skills.

The USU theme was “The Pollinator,” inspired by Utah’s bee-themed symbolism adopted by the early European settlers of Utah.

Captain Brett Safely oversaw the design, quality and presentation of the concrete canoe project. This was his fourth time participating in the conference.

“Bees symbolize a community that works for the good of the whole, each bee does its part to provide for the entire swarm,” he said. “For the future civil engineers studying at USU, the beehive symbolizes us as we work together with the public to support and help one another and to create thriving communities.”

Ursa Major, the 2023 canoe design, made another appearance when the University of Utah and Arizona State University team borrowed USU’s canoe to compete after difficulties with their own.

Transportation: 3rd Place

During the transportation challenge, teams were asked to find a solution to solve the traffic problem on Main Street in Logan.

The Utah Department of Transportation asked teams to analyze traffic issues along Main Street in Logan and present their findings. Intersection design, traffic congestion, highway geometry and transit-modeling were a few examples of the types of problems students encountered.

“I am immensely proud of my students,” said Austin Ball, club advisor for ASCE. “They dedicate their time for months to prepare for this competition and their dedication paid off. We are always thrilled to participate and are equally excited to start preparing for the coming years.”
