CRITIC’S PICK
For this tennis-pro triad, it’s love, set, match.
‘Challengers’
The highly-anticipated latest from the director Luca Guadagnino (“Call Me by Your Name”) follows three tennis pros as they shift between lovers, friends and foes. It stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist.
From our review:
All three leads in “Challengers” are very appealing, and each brings emotional and psychological nuance to the story, whatever the characters’ current configuration. They’re also just fun to look at, and part of the pleasure of this movie is watching pretty people in states of undress restlessly circling one another, muscles tensed and desiring gazes ricocheting. Guadagnino knows this; he’s in his wheelhouse here, and you can feel his delight in his actors.

Critic’s Pick
A series of powerful vignettes.
‘terrestrial verses’.
Tehranians interact with various cultural officials in their everyday life — finding the right uniform for a daughter’s school ceremony, applying for a job or a drivers license, registering a son’s name — and must navigate the restraints of authoritarian bureaucracy.
Because each vignette is no more than a few minutes long and consists of Kafkaesque conversations that border on the absurd, “Terrestrial Verses” operates with a cumulative effect. It’s death by a thousand pinpricks, a succession of small indignities. Each seemingly simple task is not just saddled with procedural irritations — forms to fill out, appointments to attend, banal questions to answer — but with fear. Suppose your answer to a routine query could incriminate you or there’s no way to prove to an official that you aren’t lying. How would you live your life?
B(oredom). D(etachment). S(tagnation). M(alaise).
‘the feeling that the time for doing something has passed’.
This deadpan sex comedy directed, written by and starring Joanna Arnow in her debut feature follows a woman as she’s dominated both at work and in various B.D.S.M. relationships, none of which seem to bring her fulfillment.
Arnow films her own nude body with the kind of frankness that is called brave because she wants to be more confrontational than arousing. She’s so visible that it takes a beat to remember that someone can be physically exposed and emotionally opaque.
A tear-jerker that’s unusually understated.
‘nowhere special’.
A terminally-ill single father (James Norton) searches for the right adoptive parents to care for his son (Daniel Lamont) after he dies.
After being admonished by a snotty rich client because of slow work, John, taking the adage “you only live once” to heart, eggs the fellow’s house. It’s one of the few moments when the movie deigns to deliver a conventional satisfaction. But the mostly low-key mode of “Nowhere Special” is the right one. Norton is spectacular, but little Lamont delivers one of those uncanny performances that doesn’t seem like acting, and makes you feel for the kid almost as much as his onscreen parent does.
Another Cronenberg progeny with unsettling in her DNA.
In Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature debut, ecological collapse leads Canada to reduce its population by calling on citizens to volunteer for euthanasia. One well-off family discovers that the choice might not be so voluntary.
“Humane” is a thought experiment sprung to bloody life, a cross between the trolley problem and dystopian extinction nightmares. Set in the very near future, it tries to tackle a cascade of ethical questions. Who counts as valuable? What does it mean to be good? If humans wreck the earth, what will we do to survive? Do we even deserve it?
Perfect for arachnophobia exposure therapy.
After a venomous spider escapes from its owner’s care and begins rapidly reproducing, the residents of a low-income housing block must face off against these eight-legged menaces.
There are no fresh ideas in the French creepy-crawler “Infested,” yet this first feature from Sébastien Vanicek scurries forward with such pep and purpose that its shortcomings are easily forgivable. Add a handful of eager young actors, a sociopolitical slam and a claustrophobic location swarming with venomous spiders and you’ll be hunting for the DEET long before the credits roll.
Watch on Shudder . Read the full review .
Your standard musician biopic, but make it spiritual.
‘unsung hero’.
Based on a real family of musicians who have five Grammy Awards between them, this faith-based drama follows a tight-knit clan as they move from Australia to Nashville, and find success in recording Christian music.
Viewer beware: Between the uplift and the cringe, this movie may cause whiplash. Joel Smallbone plays his own father, David, who faces financial and reputational ruin after booking a big concert and failing to pack the house. He resettles the family in the United States, but no job materializes. His pep-talking spouse, Helen (Daisy Betts), and their beatific children pull up bootstraps and practically whistle while they work, but it’s not enough.
A boyish action flick starring a boy named Boy.
‘boy kills world’.
Blood begets more blood when a victim of an attack that left him deaf and mute seeks revenge on the perpetrators.
At least give it up for the stunt crew on “Boy Kills World,” a boneheaded action movie that gives some exceedingly fit performers — its hard-body star Bill Skarsgard very much included — a chance to flaunt their physical skills. To judge from all the grunting, the straining muscles and cascading sweat, Skarsgard, along with a few of his nimble co-stars and an army of stunt performers, puts in serious work to try to make the relentless bashing and smashing, flailing and dying look good. Too bad the filmmakers were incapable of doing the same.

The incoherent drama Browse tries to look like a suspenseful horror movie, but there's nothing scary or thrilling about this rambling dud of a film.
Full Review | Jul 30, 2020
A great deal of the movie consists of unfinished ideas, plot points, story threads, and character arcs.
Full Review | Original Score: 2/4 | Jul 22, 2020
It's a thoughtful, curious piece of work which may not quite be successful in finding its destination but which manages to intrigue along the way.
Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jul 21, 2020
Skip the film if you need an ending that answers the questions raised throughout. But check it out if you enjoy seeing a psychological thriller that makes you come to your own conclusions.
Full Review | Original Score: 7/10 | Jul 20, 2020
With such a tangled mess of a film it is hard to put your finger on what went wrong in the bringing it to the screen.
Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 13, 2020
In a perfect world, this thriller, with its onslaught of stomach-churning "oh no!" moments, would've had a point, something that connected it all together (or at least a conclusion), but it doesn't.
Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 12, 2020
An identity theft "nightmare" that fails every attempted thrill and chill. Quite possibly one of the most unimaginative and unmemorable films I've ever seen.
Full Review | Original Score: .5/5 | Jul 10, 2020
An everyman's identify theft -- or is he just a deluded creeper? -- is fitfully explored in this underwhelming psychological thriller.
Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 7, 2020
Browse feels like glimpsing through a problematic story with little context as to why you should care let alone watch it.
Full Review | Original Score: 2/10 | Jul 7, 2020
This thriller doesn't thrill. It occasionally amuses, and it rarely makes any real sense.

Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story comes to Hulu this week, providing unprecedented access to a band that’s been a global sensation for four decades. As they’ve gotten older, they reflect on their success and discuss their uncertain future as frontman Jon Bon Jovi undergoes throat surgery that threatens his singing career. And on Prime Video, catch THEM: The Scare , the second season of the Little Marvin and Lena Waithe-produced anthology horror show which will once again star Deborah Ayorinde, but in a new role as an LAPD detective whose latest investigation starts to affect her home life.
New on Hulu April 26: Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story
Hulu’s four-part docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story is the 40-years-in-the-making story of one of America’s most enduring rock bands and a profile of the man who lent his name to it, Jon Bon Jovi. 7 top new movies to stream this week on Netflix, Shudder and more April (23-29)
“Anyone But You”, “Monkey Man” and more are streaming this week
It’s set to be a slightly quieter week for new movies but there’s still a handful of exciting flicks arriving on the best streaming services and it’s Netflix that’s taking the spotlight with two noteworthy offerings landing on the popular streaming platform.
This week will see “Anyone But You” arrive on Netflix. This glossy rom-com stars two of Hollywood’s biggest rising talents, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, and is a bit of a throwback to the type of movie that dominated the cinematic landscape in the early 2000s. The big-red streamer is also offering a divisive erotic thriller that features another in-vogue actor, Jenna Ortega. Plus, the next few days will also see some big movies arrive on premium streaming including Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man”.
If you’re looking for the freshest streaming movies this week then check out the full list below. And be sure to also browse the new TV shows to watch this week as well.
'Anyone But You' (Netflix)
“Anyone But You” is the type of high-profile romantic comedy that used to dominate Hollywood, but has increasingly become confined to streaming services in recent years. That’s what made this movie’s box office success at the tail end of 2023 so refreshing, but if you missed “Anyone But You” in theaters now is your chance to enjoy it at home.
Starring two impossibly attractive leads, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, this rom-com starts as many do, with a case of miscommunication. Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) enjoy an enchanted first date before a misunderstanding spoils their budding romance. Brought back together at a destination wedding, their constant bickering threatens to ruin the occasion and the emergence of their respective exes only complicates matters further. Naturally, Bea and Ben make the only logical decision, they decide to pretend to be a couple for the weekend. What they didn’t expect was real sparks to fly ….

'Monkey Man' (PVOD)
“Monkey Man” marks the directorial debut of Dev Patel, and the multi-talented performer not only takes charge behind the camera but also stars in this violent revenge thriller. Patel plays an unnamed protagonist, who moonlights as a combatant in an underground fighting ring. However, the kid’s nighttime activities are just a means to an end, as he’s hellbent on revenge against the city's elite leaders who are responsible for a traumatic childhood event and continue to victimize the poor and powerless.

Much more than “John Wick in Mumbai” (as it’s been crudely described by some), “Monkey Man” is an explosive and extremely violent action thriller with a powerful performance from Patel adding emotional stakes. However, while the character drama is engaging, it’s the tightly choreographed fight scenes that steal the show. Patel proves very capable of putting together action sequences that are dynamic, memorable and, best of all, extremely creative. “Monkey Man” is a real gem.

'Arthur the King' (PVOD)
Movies about man’s best friend are always a winner and “Arthur the King” is the latest flick to explore the special relationship between a pooch and their owner. Based on the 2016 memoir “Arthur - The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home” by Mikael Lindnord, Mark Wahlberg plays the leader of an adventure-racing team who befriends a wounded stray dog while attempting to complete an arduous 435-mile endurance race through the Dominican Republic. The dog is in poor health, and in desperate need of medical attention, but it manages to keep pace with Wahlberg’s team and inspires them to keep pushing forward as they look to complete their lengthy endurance trek. This heartwarming adventure movie is a reminder that the closest companions you can have usually walk on four legs.
‘Housekeeping for Beginners’ (PVOD)
An award-winning drama from writer/director Goran Stolevski, “Housekeeping for Beginners” made a significant splash at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2023. The movie focuses on an unconventional family. The matriarch, Dita (Anamaria Marinca), never wanted to be a mother but finds herself raising her girlfriend’s two daughters after she passes away. Her support system comprises a fake husband and his young lover, and while each member of the odd family unit has their own individual wants and needs, they come together to develop a tight bond that proves to be stronger than the outside forces trying to break them apart.
Buy on Amazon now
'Miller’s Girl' (Netflix)
“Miller’s Girl” brings together Jenna Ortega (star of Netflix’s popular “Wednesday” series) and Martin Freeman for an erotic thriller that asks some very uncomfortable questions. Ortega plays Cairo Sweet, an 18-year-old, completing her senior year of high school. Taking a creative writing class taught by Jonathan Miller (Freeman), an author struggling to write anything new, a class project becomes increasingly inappropriate as the lines between teacher and student start to blur.
“Miller’s Girl” has courted controversy pretty much since its first trailer dropped. The large age difference between its two leads, and the subject matter of a forbidden affair, has understandably caused some fallout. The critics weren’t especially kind to this thriller either, it holds a poor 29% on Rotten Tomatoes . However, viewers were little kinder at 42%, and Ortega’s strong screen presence helps carry the weaker elements, so if you're curious to see what all the fuss is about then you just might want to give “Miller’s Girl” a chance. Just be sure to keep your expectations in check.
Stream on Netflix from April 25
'Infested' (Shudders)
Horror-focused streaming service Shudder is on a bit of a hot streak right now. Last week it offered “Late Night with the Devil”, a refreshing found footage horror that earned critical acclaim when it debuted in theaters last month. And the scary movie streamer is following up that excellent addition with “Infested”, which looks set to be another can't-miss chiller. Critics have been similarly enthusiastic about this creeping movie, it currently holds a very strong 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes .
The movie centers on Kaleb (Théo Christine), a lonely guy about to turn 30 years old. He’s currently locked in a family argument with his sister over an inheritance that has also led to his best friend cutting ties. Fascinated by exotic animals, Kaleb brings home a venomous spider (as you do), and you won’t shocked to hear it soon escapes. Quickly reproducing, these creepy arachnids turn Kaleb’s apartment building into a massive spider web and a battle for survival begins.
Stream on Shudder starting April 26
'Love Lies Bleeding' (PVOD)
Director Rose Glass made one heck of an impression with her directorial debut, “Saint Maud," in 2019. Now, the British filmmaker returns with her eagerly-anticipated follow-up, “Love Lies Bleeding” which hit theaters in March and is now limbering up for its streaming debut. Swapping the psychological horror of her first feature, for a more pulpy thriller with a romantic heart, this over-the-top flick is no less impressive. Glass has assembled a strong cast with Kristen Stewart, Katy O'Brian, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, Dave Franco, and Ed Harris all involved.
The movie focuses on the relationship between a reclusive gym manager named Lou (Stewart) and an up-and-coming bodybuilder, Jackie (O’Brian). On her way to Las Vegas to achieve her dreams, Jackie was supposed to be just passing through. But also feeling an attraction, she gets a little sidetracked. While Lou and Jackie grow closer, their romance brings unexpected violence, as the web of Lou’s criminal family threatens to consume them both.

Jessica Rothe Keeps the Hope Alive for Third ‘Happy Death Day’ Movie
It’s now been five years since the release of sequel Happy Death Day 2U , Christopher Landon’s sequel to the Groundhog Day -style slasher movie from 2017. Both films star Jessica Rothe as final girl Tree Gelbman, and director Christopher Landon had been planning on bringing the character – and the actor – back for a third installment. So… where is it?!
We’ve been talking about a potential Happy Death Day 3 for several years now, with the ball in producer Jason Blum’s court. Happy Death Day 2U scared up $64 million at the worldwide box office, a far cry from the first film’s $125 million. But with a reported production budget of just $9 million, that first sequel was profitable for Blumhouse. So again… where is it?!
Chatting with Screen Geek this week while promoting her new action-thriller Boy Kills World , franchise star Jessica Rothe provided a hopeful update on Happy Death Day 3 .
“ Well, I can say Chris Landon has the whole thing figured out ,” Rothe explains. “We just need to wait for Blumhouse and Universal to get their ducks in a row.
Rothe continues in her comments to Screen Geek, “But my fingers are so crossed. I think Tree [Gelbman] deserves her third and final chapter to bring that incredible character and franchise to a close or a new beginning .”
Back in 2020, Christopher Landon had revealed that the working title for the third installment was Happy Death Day to Us , said to be “different than the other two films.”
In the meantime, Christopher Landon is directing a mysterious thriller titled Drop for Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, along with a werewolf movie titled Big Bad for Lionsgate.

The Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell romantic comedy “Anyone But You” hitting Netflix and an album by Brazil superstar Anitta are some of the new television, movies, music and games headed to a device near you.
Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists : Everyone’s favorite dancing demon doll “M3GAN” comes back to Peacock, a beautiful woman battles hideous beasts in Sony’s video game Stellar Blade, and a documentary detailing Bon Jovi’s early days, rise to fame and breakups and breakdowns.
NEW MOVIES TO STREAM
— The Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell romantic comedy “Anyone But You” is finally on Netflix starting Tuesday. The movie is about two young singles whose magical one-night stand ends in miscommunication and hurt feelings, and then find themselves both in a small family wedding party and staying in the same house. It’s loosely based on Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” Reviews were mixed and the box office started out tame, but it became a slow burn sleeper hit in theaters, earning more than $218 million worldwide. If you’ve been holding out to see what the fuss was about, now is your low stakes chance (it’s also not a bad plane option, which is where this film critic finally watched it). And afterwards, if you need a rom-com palate cleanser, “You’ve Got Mail” is also currently on Netflix.
— Another stealth box office hit, everyone’s favorite dancing demon doll “M3GAN” is coming back to Peacock starting Wednesday. Is it great cinema? Probably not, but everyone who watches it seems to have a fun time (in spite of themselves). Entertainment Weekly’s Leah Greenblatt wrote in her review that, “This is not the morose, carnage-soaked horror of dank basements and clammy night terrors; most of the movie happens in bright daylight, every maniacal head tilt, ungodly hip swivel, and murder-by-gardening-tool calibrated for screams that end not with a gasp but a giggle. M3GAN came to play, and possibly reboot her motherboard for a sequel. Are you not entertained?”
— Finally, if you’ve exhausted all your “Tortured Poets” analysis, you can pivot to watching a Joe Alwyn movie instead. He stars in Claire Denis’ 2022 romantic thriller “Stars at Noon,” which comes to Hulu on Sunday. Based on the 1986 Denis Johnson novel, Margaret Qualley plans an American journalist in Nicaragua during COVID-19 who starts an affair with a mysterious British guy, played by Alwyn.
— AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr
NEW MUSIC TO STREAM
— Shot through the heart, and they’re to blame: Forty years after a bunch of kids from New Jersey got together and formed a great American rock band, a documentary detailing their early days , rise to fame, and best of all — breakups and breakdowns — has arrived. The only Bon Jovi documentary series to feature all members past and present, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story” premieres on Hulu Friday in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in all other territories. Binge all four-parts one after the other or dole them out slowly. However you do it, expect to have “Livin’ On A Prayer” stuck in your head for the next week.
— Anitta , arguably Brazil’s most recognizable global pop singer since Astrud Gilberto sang “The Girl From Ipanema” nearly 60 years ago, is preparing to release a new album Friday. It’s titled “Funk Generation,” her first since the 2022’s “Versions of Me,” and its viral hits “Envolver” and “Girl From Rio” (with its interpolation of the Gilberto classic) made her an international star. She’s long aimed to bring Brazilian sounds to the worldwide music market, and focusing on Brazilian funk is an extension of that desire. “’Funk Generation’ is an album where I celebrate my roots. It’s where I express the power of Rio’s funk in every track its unique, danceable, and sensual beats,” she said in a statement. “It’s a rhythm born in the favelas, where I grew up, and it exudes resistance and art in every community.”
— It is time to give Midwest MCs their flowers: Fresh off a tour opening for Migos rapper Offset , Detroit’s Skilla Baby is preparing to drop a new project on Friday, “The Coldest.” If his trap earworm “Bae,” with its celebratory, ladies-first lyrics (“Bae, you know you’re fine, don’t you?” in the chorus) and the community-focused “Plate” are a taste of what’s to come, the release is going to be delicious.

NEW SHOWS TO STREAM
— “The Big Door Prize,” a sweet, silly dramedy about the residents of a small town turned upside down by the arrival of a machine that reveals a person’s true calling, returns for a second season on Apple TV+. Starring Chris O’Dowd as a local high school teacher, “The Big Door Prize” is based on a book by M.O. Walsh and was one of The Associated Press’ TV shows worth watching in 2023. Season two of “The Big Door Prize” debuted Wednesday. Season one is also still available on the streamer.
— Two teen ghost detectives who appear in DC comic books star in their own series called “Dead Boy Detectives.” The story follows Edwin and Charles, two long-dead teens who spend their afterlife still on Earth and investigating paranormal cases. They’re assisted by a living teen named Crystal Palace who is a clairvoyant. “Dead Boy Detectives” also features Lukas Gage in an over-the-top, comedic role of the Cat King. “The Summer I Turned Pretty” actor David Iacono plays a demon. The ghostly investigations are available now on Netflix.
— Idris Elba and Adam Pally reprise their “Sonic the Hedgehog” characters for the new animated series “Knuckles” on Paramount+. Elba plays Knuckles, an Echidna with super strength, who is adjusting after moving to Earth at the end of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Pally is Wade Whipple, a not-so-bright deputy sheriff. “Knuckles” is part of Paramount’s efforts to expand the popular “Sonic” brand. Ben Schwartz and Tika Sumpter also reprise roles from the films. All six-episodes of “Knuckles” stream Friday.
— Alicia Rancilio
NEW VIDEO GAMES TO PLAY
— Sony’s Stellar Blade takes place on an Earth that’s been mostly abandoned after an invasion by hordes of mysterious monsters called the Naytiba. Enter Eve, a sword- and gun-wielding warrior who has returned to her home planet to help out the few people left, including a scavenger named Adam. The Biblical references pile up — for example, the last city standing is Xion — but the real influence is the popular hack-and-slash epic Bayonetta. If you’ve been craving another flamboyant adventure with a beautiful woman battling hideous beasts, Korean studio Shift Up hopes it’s got you covered. Start swinging Friday on PlayStation 5.
— Electronic Arts’ Tales of Kenzera: Zau is less campy and more down to earth. Its protagonist, Zau, aims to become a healer and, maybe, bring his father back from the Land of the Dead. The aspiring shaman has some nifty parkour skills as well as sun and moon masks, which allow him to, respectively, launch spears and manipulate time as he fights evil spirits. Tales of Kenzera is the debut title from Surgent Studios, which was founded by voice actor Abubakar Salim, and he says it was inspired by Bantu folklore as well as his own experience with grief. The journey began Tuesday on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S and PC.

The Adam Sandler Netflix deal reaches a natural rest stop with the family wedding comedy “The Week Of,” now available on the streaming service. Whether you consider it a charming positive or a lazy negative, Sandler has often made comedies that reflect where he’s at in his own personal life, and he’s clearly already considering the days that his daughters get married, and the natural and sitcomish insanity that can come in the week before such a major event. Yes, “ The Wedding Singer ” is now the “Father of the Bride,” but the lazy writing and production values of these comedies continue to frustrate, even if the film rises above the worst of the Netflix-Sandler deal. There are even times when “The Week Of” works, allowing us to see the more-interesting Sandler of recent films like “The Meyerowitz Stories,” and the film’s undeniably personal undercurrent makes it more tolerable than garbage like “The Ridiculous Six,” but this is still a perfect example of the market that Netflix seems intent to corner: Movies You Can Watch While You Play Games on Your Phone.
Sandler plays Kenny Lustig, the good-natured father of the bride, Sarah ( Allison Strong ). Kenny is a stereotypical Long Islander—listens to sports radio about the Mets every day, loves Billy Joel , has a gigantic family—and a stereotypical dad in that he wants to do everything possible for his daughter’s special day even on a very strapped budget. The bulk of the comedy in “The Week Of” comes from the ways Kenny tries to wheel and deal his way around the high expenses that come with weddings, including hosting the event at a Quality Inn, having a sketchy relative ( Steve Buscemi ) get the booze at the duty free at the airport, and having a 12-year-old nephew DJ. Kenny refuses to do what make sense: allow the father of the groom, the wealthy heart surgeon Kirby Cordice ( Chris Rock ), help out with the bills.
Sandler as the overly-attached father and Rock as the distant one should allow for some fun buddy comedy scenes, but the two rarely share screen time. Rock’s character is woefully underwritten, sketched as the kind of smooth-talking socialite that exists purely to put more pressure on Kenny to make the wedding day more impressive. It’s a shame to see Rock do so little as “The Week Of” spends more time with secondary characters who just aren’t funny like the relative who got out of rehab and so can’t be triggered by any booze or loud noises (at a wedding) or the Maid of Honor intent to make sure everything goes exactly as she wants it to go.
As you might expect, the heartfelt story of a father letting go of his daughter and Sandler’s penchant for extreme humor don’t really mesh. This is a film that features an honestly touching scene in which Sandler completely nails the awkward blend of pride and sadness that a parent feels when he has to let a child go and also features a scene in which Rock massages the ends of an old man’s amputated legs in his sleep, thinking they are breasts. More than most of the Sandler Netflix comedies, it almost feels genuine and heartfelt enough that you think you’re about to like it and then it just goes wrong again. It’s like someone who comes in for a hug and slaps you in the face at the last minute instead.
Of course, the biggest problem with “The Week Of,” as with so many of these Netflix Sandler comedies, is something that’s key to the genre: pacing. Perhaps it’s because running time isn’t as much of a concern on the streaming service as it is in theaters, but Sandler has never met a joke he didn’t want to repeat seven times. It’s that repetition that fits the “background noise” model of so much of Netflix’s programming in that you don’t have to worry about missing a joke because almost all of them are repeated more than once. The economic differences between the families, the triggers for the kid from rehab, a bit about an old man’s incontinence—everything happens again and again. And Sandler’s repetitiveness wouldn’t be as grating if this thing wasn’t nearly two hours long. Cut some of the repeated jokes and there’s a halfway decent comedy in here. As is, it’s kind of like the actual week before a wedding: exhausting.

THE IRON CLAW (2023): Movie Review & Analysis + Von Erichs in Japan WRITE THAT DOWN! A Professional Wrestling Podcast w/ Fumi Saito & Justin Knipper
This week Fumi Saito & Justin Knipper offer up a thorough review of the film, 'Iron Claw - The Von Erich Family Story.' They highlight the movie's retelling of tragic tales plus the vital historical moments that may have been left out of the film, and the challenges of recreating events from wrestling history. Discover how the film captures significant events, including fatal accidents and victories that shaped the Von Erich's wrestling legacy. Their analysis covers major characters from the World Class territory in Dallas who played a large role in the Von Erich family story, talking Bruiser Brody, Chris Adams, and Gino Hernandez, among others. Fumi & Justin's review acknowledges the film's remarkable reconstruction of the Dallas Sportatorium as well as its authentic soundtrack, capturing the late '70s and early '80s era charm. It's not just a wrestling movie, but an emotional story about family, tragedy, and survival. It is a testament to the passion for the sport and the legacy of the wrestling family, the Von Erichs. Today's show offers a unique perspective on the remarkable, yet tragically brief, careers, the controversies, and the unique elements of the Von Erichs' story not generally covered in mainstream media. The two also uncover lesser-known details of the story, like Kerry Von Erich's resilience in the face of adversity, his reputation as an instant sensation as fan favorite "Texas Tornado" in WWF. They also explored the Von Erichs' stint in New Japan and their global tours during their WWE tenure, their friendship with other superstar wrestlers, and their tragic family saga. The film demystifies the backstage world of wrestling which culminates in a bittersweet reunion in the afterlife – a metaphorical representation of the family's long-awaited peace. Despite the heartbreaking history, Fumi & Justin's discussion ends on a positive note, encouraging listeners to watch this eye-opening depiction of the Von Erichs' legacy. (AI + JK)
