Importance of teamwork.

One of the most effective methods of organising labour in recent years has been teamwork. Many organisations have realised that cooperation helps employees perform better, which improves organisational performance. Teamwork can increase both individual and organisational performance. Through constructive comments, feedback, experiences, and viewpoints, teamwork aids in the development of the employees' abilities and perspectives. Teamwork is a crucial tool for doing various tasks precisely and effectively. Because responsibilities are allocated relatively among all team members, there is less work to be done, which helps employees perform better without feeling pressured.

My Teamwork Story

We can use my school project as an example; We had two days to create a working model based on scientific principles. This required planning and a great extent of preparations, and if I tried to do it alone, there was a chance I would forget something. Therefore my friends and I created a group of a few people and distributed the work amongst ourselves.

Everyone completed their assigned tasks and did them correctly, following all the necessary steps. Ultimately, we achieved good results, and our team came second in the science project competition. Thus, teamwork is critical as it increases productivity and saves time. It also gives us the confidence and courage to work hard.

Rules Of Teamwork

Discipline | There is always a time restriction for a task, and when working in a team, you should be mindful of the time and accomplish your assignment appropriately. In addition to the time, other disciplinary requirements must be met. There should be mutual respect between the team members and a safe space where everyone’s opinion is heard.

Sound Communication | Consider a team of five that follows their leader or senior member. However, there should also be freedom to voice one's opinions; working as a team does not only include obeying instructions; members should also have this flexibility. As a result, the team works well together and each member gives their all and performs admirably.

Proper Work Assignment: Each of us has unique skills; thus, assigning work that matches our interests for successful outcomes is essential. We should continue to study, but when time is limited, we should work wisely to get good results.

Proper Goal: The team captain makes sure that everyone on the team is aware of what the project entails. What exactly do they need to do? And what else are they able to change? All these factors will drive other people's thoughts in the appropriate direction. Without clarity, a team can devise new solutions or approaches to finish a task.

My Story Of Teamwork

In the inter-school football tournament, our team was in the final. But unfortunately, we were two goals down. Only 15 minutes were remaining. We knew we cannot make it if we don't unite amongst ourselves for these last few minutes. We had a quick team talk during the drinks break and decided to give it all and communicate among ourselves. In the 83rd minute, we scored one goal, and it was 2-1. We pushed hard, and the entire team gave everything they had in their arsenal. We knew at this point individual brilliance won't work.

We needed team effort. Finally, in the 89th minute, we scored another and equalised it to 2-2! We were so happy and pumped up at the same time. We scored another goal in the extra time and made it 3-2 for us. We eventually won the tournament and realised that teamwork is the ultimate key to success and victory.

Specific abilities are required for a project to be successful or for a task to be completed. The most crucial factor is teamwork; you can accomplish any of your goals if you have a fantastic team. However, even a team of highly skilled individuals cannot work effectively as a unit unless they have a strong bond based on mutual respect. If you enjoy sports, you may easily understand the value of cooperation since it takes the entire team to succeed; when they all play well, they can do anything. It takes more than one good player to win a game.

Introduction

This teamwork reflection is regarding a leg surgery we performed at The Alfred last month. We needed to perform surgery on a patient who got an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on his leg in a car accident. We were a team of 5 including nurses and doctors. The surgery was successful because everyone performed their tasks responsibly.

After describing the main focus of the reflection, you are ready to move on to the next step i.e. elaborating on the objective of the whole project. Simply put, you have to describe the key objectives of the project that you wish to achieve through your teamwork.

The main objective of the surgery was to rebuild the ligament with a tissue graft in order to ensure that the patient can smoothly perform his regular day to day basis tasks on his own.

Succeeding that, you will elaborate on the responsibilities of the team in detail. To elaborate, you will effectively define which team member of your group was assigned which task. Here, you can also elaborate on the various leadership theories that were applied at the team level. We were a total of five members were responsible for performing the surgery

1. Surgeon - He was responsible for taking out the graft from other tendons in the knee or thigh areas.

2. Anesthesiologist - I was responsible for deciding the level of anesthesia that needs to be given to the patient from time to time.

3. Nurse anesthetist - She was the assistant to the anesthesiologist and was supposed to take care of the temperature of the patient and other functional changes occurring in the body.

4. Circulating nurse - He was responsible for helping the surgeon throughout the process of surgery.

5. Surgical tech - Surgical tech was responsible for ensuring that all the tools are available in the surgery room and will hand them out as per the surgeon’s instructions.

During the surgery, we were a group of diverse teams in which the members were of different social groups. They were moving really fast with every step during the surgery, so, I got a little anxious through the whole surgery.

Personally, I learned that with time and experience, people gradually build their speed in performing different tasks. Additionally, I also got to learn how to work professionally with a team of highly skilled surgeons.

Step 1 - Describe the main focus of reflection

Gone are the days when a single doctor or dentist or other health organization practitioners could solely deliver high-quality care that could easily satisfy their patients. Today, it requires a good tea to offer satisfactory service to the patients. The complexity of the care that patients need today highlights the need for health professionals to collaborate and communicate clearly with each other (Eddy, Jordan & Stephenson, 2016). We learned this through our recent experience which will be described in this reflection.

This teamwork reflection will confer our experience of taking care of old age people about a week ago. We were 4 team members that were supposed to visit Berengarra Residential Aged Care Facility and take care of old aged people. The reason that we were assigned this job was that the previously assigned team failed in performing their duty due to a lack of responsibility. Although we also faced some challenges, eventually we took care of everything and successfully performed our duty because of our collaboration and teamwork.

Step 2 - Elaborate on the objectives of the project

The main objective of this project was to effectively take care of the elderly people that need the utmost care and support because of a lack of energy to even perform basic daily tasks. Moreover, most of the people in old age care centers are suffering from worry or distress due to leaving their homes because of ample reasons such as abandonment from their homes. People living in the old age care center often experience depression and in old age. This is either the result of living alone or due to a lack of connection breakage with their culture of origin. This results in an incapacity to actively participate in the activities of the community (Singh & Misra, 2009). Hence, another objective of this project was to connect with the old age people and give them the support and care they deserve at this age.

We were a team of 5 people and we all divided our responsibilities as per the handling of different essential activities every day. To maintain confidentiality, I will address each member as members 1, 2, 3, and 4. Team member one was responsible for the food committee and was supposed to look after all the meals in terms of their quality and the timely serving of the meals. In different old age centers, old people often lack the energy to perform daily personal tasks such as changing and bathing.

So, team member 2 was responsible for taking care of the bathing and dressing assistance of elderly people. Team member 3 was me and I was accountable for medication assistance for the elderly people and for ensuring that every patient gets their medications on time. Lastly, team member 5 was responsible for coordinating with the housekeeping team and ensuring proper sanitation at the whole place, and keeping the place disinfected.

Step 4 - Final status of the objective

After a month, we were relieved from the duty, and in our final evaluation our supervisors evaluated the place and took the feedback and we got good feedback and ratings. This implies that we were successful in achieving our ultimate goal and providing efficient service to the old age center. Secondly, we got blessings from the elderly and this indicated that we were successful in achieving the second objective of providing a satisfactory service to the old age people.

Step 5 - Highlight the main challenges

Through the whole tenure we worked at that old age center, we encountered a few challenges. Firstly, as it was a completely new place to us, So, it was challenging for all of us to adjust to the new environment. So, it took us some time to adjust to their daily routines and learn their daily routines. Besides, the last team that was in charge was accused of a lack of responsibility, so it was pressure on us to avoid that tag for us.

On a personal level, as I was in charge of medication for the patient, there were 20 patients under my supervision. Hence, it was quite challenging for me to keep a record of all the patients and the time and name of the medicines that were supposed to get delivered to the target audience. So, I took assistance from team member 1 who was in charge of the food committee. He had this tool on his iPad where he stored all the data and kept a track of all the medication easily and suggested the same to me. He assisted me effectively and we divided up the number of patients to effectively maintain the record.

Through this whole experience we learned how crucial coordination and collaboration are in the healthcare sector. If we would have not divided our work or assisted each other, it would not have been possible for us to successfully take care of the old age people. It was our collaboration and trust in each other as a team that made us successful in achieving the target and getting good feedback from our superiors.

On a personal level, I learned that there will always be difficulty in handling different situations and it is always good to ask for help if needed rather than handling it all on your own and messing it up by doing it alone. Besides, I also learned that technology can be a great helping hand if used effectively.

On a team level, for the future we would ensure that we calm ourselves down and try our best to adapt and blend the environment as soon as possible to effectively work on giving the best services. Besides, we would also have frequent team meetings every day to ensure that if any team member needs any sort of help or assistance with their tasks.

On the other hand, if similar situations occur again, on a personal level, I would definitely ensure that I would learn more about different applications that can offer assistance to me in managing different records.

I learned this through the effective experience I had in my second year of doing a Master's in Nursing with a Specialty in Nursing Administration and Management at the University of Texas Arlington. I was in a group of 5 people and we were assigned the task of creating a PowerPoint presentation.

We all agreed on the topic, “How health practitioners can support families of children with autism spectrum disorders”. All the team members together decided and made me the team leader and on their suggestion only I distributed the tasks among the teams.

There were two major objectives of this project. Firstly, we wanted to find out the different ways through which we can support families of children dealing with autism spectrum disorders. The major reason for this objective was that as nurses there often comes a time when we would have to support the families of children dealing with different disorders. While preparing for this presentation, we would understand various methods through which we can offer support to the families of children dealing with ASD.

The second crucial objective of this task was our teachers wanted us to know how to work in teams effectively. The major reason behind the same is that nursing teams are often instructed to handle a bunch of patients or wards in different sections. Learning how to work in a team would give us clarity on how we can work together effectively to get the desired results.

We were in a group of 5 members and to maintain the confidentiality of the names, I would refer to each member as Student A, Student B, Student C, Student D, and me. While keeping in mind the capabilities and key skills of all my team members, I decided to give them the task that suited their capabilities. Student A - Student A was very good with research and had in-depth knowledge about how to find relevant and high authority-certified research papers. Besides, the topic of the presentation majorly required in-depth research about finding different ways to support families of children with ASD. Hence, student A was responsible for finding all the relevant research papers, theses, and dissertations related to the topic of the presentation.

Student B voluntarily decided to take the responsibility of digging out the relevant information because she liked reading. Once all the relevant literature had been selected, then Student B was responsible for shunting out all the relevant information that needed to be added to the PowerPoint presentation. For student C, we decided to give the responsibility of arranging the data in a presentable form. The major reason behind the same was that it was pre-decided that C might not be able to get the task done because of his interview round. So, as part of the contingency plan we decided to give student C the minimum work because even if the work doesn't get done, nobody has to bear an extra burden. Student D had a specialized certification in PowerPoint presentation so we decided to give him the duty of creating the final presentation. Me, as everybody decided, I would be the team lead so I was responsible to give the final presentation in front of the whole class.

Step 4 - Describe the final status of the objectives

Everybody in my team did proper work as per their assigned responsibilities. Although as a part of the contingency plan we decided to give student C minimal responsibilities possible he also finished his work on time before going to the interview. I believe this objective was successfully attained because we had everything planned in advance along with pre-decided responsibilities for everyone. As everyone knew what they had to do even when we faced challenges during the language barriers or lack of coordination, everybody did their part very well. However, when it was my turn to present the presentation in front of the whole class, I got a little nervous and even fumbled in some places during delivering my presentation. But in the end, we were successful in achieving the main objective of working together irrespective of some challenges we faced. Moreover, we also learn so much about how to support families of children with autism syndrome disorder.

We had to encounter various types of challenges that we had to face during this presentation. Even I personally had to experience some of the challenges. At the team level - as we were still studying under a remote structure, for the team level we faced communication challenges because there were many people who did not have high-quality internet connections in their homes. Besides, two of the team members belong to other nationalities so we also faced language barriers as a major challenge during communication with them. Language barriers in a multinational team often lead to reduced participation in team communication (Tenzer, Pudelko & Zellmer-Bruhn, 2021).

On a personal level, I am an introvert by nature and somehow also lacked confidence in public speaking. As I was the one who had to present it in front of the entire class, I was a little nervous and also thought that I would not be able to present it meticulously.

Through the whole experience, on a personal level, I learned how crucial communication skills are in my nursing profession. The reason is irrespective of this presentation in the future as well I would have to interact with the families of the patient or with the patient. Hence, I have to socialize and would have to work on my communication skills as well. Good communication skill does not only rely on the physical abilities of nurses, but also on education and experience (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2014).

On the team level, I gotta know that cordiality and planning are really crucial in any team for the successful accomplishment of the desired goal. Irrespective of the fact that we had a language barrier or connectivity issue, as everything was well-planned everybody did their part very well.

In the future, I personally feel that I would like to make two changes to the action plan that we followed in this experience. On an individual level, I would definitely take some of the communication skill courses from different learning apps and would even practice public speaking to socialize comparatively better to this experience. On the team level, if the situation occurs in the remote working structure again, then I would prefer to use various project management software or different applications that could help us with coordination and planning more effectively.

The success of any workplace majorly depends on teamwork and collaboration between its employees. A group accomplishes the highest amount of accomplishments when it is completely focused on a task and completely utilizes every participant’s ability. The most important factor that impacts the success of team collaboration is trust. Without trust, the team significantly runs the risk of deteriorating over time (Bennett & Gadlin, 2012). I learned this from a recent experience I had in my company when we were assigned a task that we have to perform in a group.

Last month, the superiors of our AB enterprise company assigned us the target of making our website rank in the top 10 search engine results for some particular keywords in the span of 3 months. We were a total of 5 people in the marketing team that was assigned this task 4 months back. After effectively planning everything and using different strategies and tactics, we successfully achieved our target.

The main objective of this project was to convert our website into a revenue-generating website. The first step for achieving the same was it was essential that our website should rank on the first pages of the search engines. Secondly, we were a newly formed team, our employer wanted us to understand the true meaning of the team, collaboration, and trust. Hence, he assigned us this task to let us understand the true meaning of the team.

We were a team of 5 members and out of which I was the SEO content writer with another junior content writer. Along with this, we had 2 members of the technical SEO team and 1 member was from the development team. Both of the content writers including me were responsible for creating engaging content for the website. Technical SEO members were responsible for optimizing the content and pitching for gaining backlinks in order to make the website rank higher. Besides, the responsibility of the developer was to upload the content, set the structure, and ensure that there remains no errors in the development phase so that the target can be achieved.

After working hard for 3 months and working overtime as well, we finally achieved the target and made our website rank for 10 keywords that were related to our niche. Moreover, when we worked together for three months as a team, we bonded and collaborated effectively to get the desired results. We trusted and assisted each other in understanding things and getting the work going so that we can achieve the target by the assigned deadline.

Throughout the whole process, we faced many challenges down the line. On a team level, the senior technical SEO got a stomach infection and was on leave for almost 15 days. In her absence, the other member faced many issues in handling the work alone. But here he asked for my assistance and for this, I had to learn about technical SEO first, and then I assisted him with all his doubts.

On a personal level, as I was leading this project, I also had other responsibilities along with writing the content. So, I faced challenges in managing my work of content writing and other responsibilities. Hence to ensure a proper balance and clear my pendencies, I did work some of the work after office hours as well.

Through this whole project, we all learned that if we collaborate effectively and work together, we can easily achieve any target. Moreover, we realized that trust is really important for the successful accomplishment of the project. Trusting teams can effectively assist in enhancing cooperation and collaboration in processes. Furthermore, this will assist them in managing their interdependencies among their respective areas of expertise (Bond-Barnard, Fletcher & Steyn, 2018). We had three subteams in a bigger circle of the marketing team. None of the subteams interfered with each other’s tasks and everyone took accountability for performing their assigned tasks with utmost efficiency.

On a personal level, I learned that although we together achieved the desired results, taking over responsibilities disrupted my work-life balance and I felt stressed from time to time due to this. Hence, I learned that I need to manage my time during working hours more effectively so that I would not have to do work from home.

On a group level, in the planning phase only, we will break our bigger target into smaller ones. So that, we would effectively be able to keep track of our overall levels of accomplishments. Moreover, in the future, if similar situations occur, we would create contingency plans as well. For example, in this situation, our team member got sick, and the burden of the same was on the other members. So, we would learn little of everything from the next time onward. So that, if anything goes wrong, we would have each other’s support to handle the crisis.

On a personal level, as I have too many responsibilities to handle, I would try to delegate some of my tasks to my juniors. So that, I would be able to focus more on the tasks that need my most attention. The next time, I would also take help from various productivity and time management tools to keep a track of all time I am spending on all the necessary and unnecessary tasks.

To conclude, teamwork is an important part of the work irrespective of the industry you work in. Hence, it is really essential to look back and reflect on the incidents to learn something every time that can assist in enhancing your efficiency. Moreover, the above-given information will effectively assist you in writing a good teamwork reflection as well.

When the Institute of Medicine Committee on Quality of Health Care in America published its 2000 report “ To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System ,” the authors attributed most medical errors to two key deficits: (1) a lack of communication and (2) dysfunctional teamwork. It appeared that the long-standing “doctor-as-captain-of-the-ship” paradigm led to such problems as physician burnout, poor relationships with nurses and staff, and arrogance toward patients’ preferences. Since the institute’s findings were published, medical leadership and training programs have been working to improve teamwork in medical practice and education . 

To better understand the problem, researchers looked at studies from commercial aviation, military, firefighting, and other rapid-response professions in which human error can result in the loss of lives. They found that in high-risk settings, teams make fewer mistakes than individuals do. When teamwork exercises were done to prepare for trauma, anesthesia, and labor and delivery emergencies, hospitals saw improved patient outcomes and fewer errors.

Physicians are now expected to work together with many other professionals when caring for patients. It takes more than one set of skills to solve most medical problems, and no one person can possess all the skills and knowledge required. For example, imagine you are a physician caring for Ms. W., a 35-year-old patient admitted six days earlier for a pulmonary embolism. During her stay, you discover she has a clotting disorder and must remain on anticoagulants for the rest of her life. However, she is uninsured and cannot afford the medication you prescribed. You also learn that the hospital wants you to send her home tomorrow. She is ready for discharge from a medical standpoint, but you are not sure how she will fare on her own.

Luckily, on the second day of Ms. W.’s admission, her nurse called social services, who helped her apply to a program that covers the cost of her medications. They also arranged for free home health visits during the first week after discharge to reduce the possibility that she will return to the emergency room. When your PA was rounding, she realized that Ms. W. has prediabetes, so a nutrition consult was called. The nutritionist discovered that Ms. W. is depressed and craving junk food because her favorite pastime, playing rugby, is now off-limits because of the blood thinners she takes. The nutritionist shared this information with the care coordinator, who arranged for Ms. W. to see an occupational therapist who could teach her safer ways to exercise. After a baseline mental and emotional health assessment, the discharge team arranged for Ms. W. to receive outpatient therapy to help her cope with her new health condition and limitations. 

As a physician, there is no chance you could have accomplished all this on your own. It took at least eight healthcare professionals, in addition to other hospital support staff, to make this patient’s discharge go smoothly. 

Clearly, physicians today rely on the input and expertise of many individuals to plan and coordinate post-hospital care. But perhaps the biggest change to the healthcare team is recognizing that the patient and their family are also vital team members. The patient needs to feel comfortable voicing their concerns and questions and making changes in their treatment plan, if needed. The patient’s family might be enlisted to perform wound care or other essential tasks, and can be educated on how to recognize a complication or side effect. Without their buy-in, treatments are often ineffective. As doctors, we can’t go home with our patients to make sure they are okay, but their families can.

In the past, medical training programs placed a low value on physician rest and wellness. The old attitude was that a dedicated physician could go for days without sleep. However, our increased awareness of the role that fatigue plays in medical error has led to improved safety laws. These days, med students and residents are required to leave the hospital and rest, while failures of programs to enforce these requirements can result in severe penalties. These changes require programs to focus on improved patient handoffs and team communication.

While patients might be concerned about their physician being unavailable, studies have shown that shared responsibility for patient care leads to greater satisfaction among nurses and other team members, as well as better patient outcomes. With a strong team in place, patients soon discover that someone will always be there and that their physician will be well rested and able to handle whatever challenges arise.

Medical school curricula now include dedicated teamwork training. Students and residents are taught how to effectively sign out patients to colleagues when they leave the hospital. Skills such as collaboration, overcoming conflict, prioritizing, and recognizing others’ strengths are explicitly taught and assessed. Students and residents practice code situations so that all team members know their role and can perform in high-stress situations. Med schools not only teach these effective teamwork traits, but they also screen for them at admission. The first place they look for the qualities needed for collaboration is in the teamwork essay.

If you are asked to write an essay about teamwork, first identify an experience when you worked with others (ideally within the past two years). Potential teamwork situations include volunteering , teaching, athletics, research, group projects in school, jobs in retail or the service industry, or other employment settings where working well with others is a key part of success. Passive situations such as shadowing, where you are not directly contributing, are not ideal for this essay.

If your team experienced conflict, describe how you overcame it, making sure to attribute the problem to shared communication issues rather than blaming an individual. If things went well, describe your channels of communication and how you shared in the decision-making. You might also mention people who were not directly on your team but who contributed to a successful outcome. In a work setting, were your customers part of your team? If you were teaching, did your students play a role in their learning? In a research project, did you get help from support staff? Be sure to show your awareness of your teammates’ different strengths and inputs. Medical schools seek people who recognize that the work of a team is better than that of a single individual. Show that you have that perspective.

The essay is only one way that schools identify your teamwork strengths. Admissions committees also look for evidence of teamwork in your activities, interview, and letters of recommendation. They will try to evaluate your ability to be flexible, to recognize and admit when you don’t know something, and to work well with others. 

Schools ultimately want medical students who are able to not only excel in their academics but also work toward a common goal without letting their ego get in the way. Above all, they want people who are comfortable working on a diverse team with a variety of strengths and skill sets. Only through teamwork can we give patients all the resources they need to regain or maintain their health.

If you can answer “yes” to the following ten questions, you’re well on your way to having the teamwork skills medical schools want to see.

  • Do you value the contribution of all team members?
  • Are you flexible and willing to change direction when needed?
  • Do you listen to and accept constructive criticism?
  • Do you avoid blaming others and instead look to systems issues when there is conflict?
  • Do you share credit with others generously?
  • Are you comfortable in both leadership and non-leadership roles?
  • Do you see the strengths of others as complementary to your own?
  • Are you open to further developing your teamwork skills?
  • Do you believe teams accomplish more than individuals?
  • Is respect for others a part of your personal value system?

Introduction

An individual is unlikely to succeed in completing a wide variety tasks alone due to complexities and obstacles. Hence, teams are often required as a means of ensuring efficiency and effectiveness. Teamwork can be beneficial because it helps to divide tasks, allocate roles and sets a clear path for success. It can help to create positive outcomes through reliability and timeliness for attaining objectives which might not have been possible with one person working alone. Teamwork has been defined as an integral component of achieving objectives and targets. A team can include a number of individuals who are entrusted with the responsibility of completing a specific task or project. Successful teams seem to be characterized by clear and precise goals. The leader of the team – if s/he is an effective leader – is able to create a vision for success while other members strive to fulfil the operational details. Each member must be dedicated and motivated while resolving personal conflicts, and a cohesive and disciplined team always strives to attain success through the use of multifaceted strategies. Furthermore, there is a focus on excellence through the use of various approaches. I have served as a member of a mountain climbing expedition. Our team encountered numerous problems and obstacles. In essence, the experience helped me to understand the dynamics of teamwork by focusing on efficiency and effectiveness. This report will seek to analyze and assess the personal experiences gained during the expedition. In short, it will analyze how teamwork can be successful by analysing and evaluating the characteristics of successful teams.

Teamwork can produce significant benefits which ensure the attainment of overall goals. Participants’ attitudes, notions, and outlooks are arguably strengthened as the result of good teamwork. Group discussions enable clear instructions that can remove ambiguity in mutual goals and targets. Teamwork has been identified as an essential component of success and efficiency. Successful teamwork is characterized by highly decentralized management structure (Lee, 2001: Pg 123). Each individual must be able to participate in the process in an efficient and effective manner. In addition, a congenial environment can ensure that innovation and creativity can be applied for complex situations. Effective teamwork is based upon a number of successful outcomes and variables. The first step is that the team must have access to proper expertise, resources, and members for achieving success (Lee, 2001: Pg 123). Leadership is the key to success because it provides guidance and inspiration to complete tasks in an efficient and effective manner. Other competencies have included high levels of dedication and commitment among team members. A shared vision can help to create highly cohesive and disciplined team members, and each member will seek to perform his/her duties because it is a key component of overall objectives. A sense of ‘ownership’ helps the team to perform at optimum levels – this will need leaders to delegate and not micro-manage, of course. Improved trust and communication can help to ensure that the team is able to increase productivity and output.

Problem and Context

I feel that the team was able to successfully develop a shared vision that needed to be completed through mutual collaboration and confidence, and I was able to ensure joint ownership of the problem by using a systematic and logical effort. Empirical studies argue that a team must have a collective idea in order to perform at optimum levels. This vision helps in the determination of realistic objectives. The SMART framework must be utilized for creating such objectives (Mohrman, 2005: Pg 78). My team was strong in the sense that its objectives were clear while individual duties were outlined in a transparent manner. A consensus was developed in which each team member provided suggestions for achieving the objectives.

Yet the team was hindered by a number of obstacles and problems which, if remedied, would have produced a different outcome. At the core level, the leadership was flawed due to the absence of strategic thinking. Leadership must be able to successfully think ‘out of the box’ in order to prepare for the future. Another flaw was that problem-solving measures were carried out in an ad hoc and unplanned manner. This can be catastrophic for teams because problems often hinder the basic objectives of the organization. There is a need for a collaborative approach towards problem solving by focusing on solutions. Finally, there were concerns that the team was hindered by the absence of coherent and disciplined guidelines (Taggar, 2002: pg 315). A team always needs to function according to proper guidance and vision in order to succeed. In short, a team needs to know what it is for, what it is doing, and how it will achieve its goals.

My role in the team was to act as a manager who would be able to fulfil the operational details of our activities. As a manager, I sought to ensure that I possessed high levels of perception and awareness regarding our goal. The five factor model provides a valuable blueprint to understand the personality of managers. I would consider myself to be an assertive and talkative individual (Wellins et al, 2004: Pg 78). This means that I am ready to accept challenges and express my views in a clear manner. My role was chosen based upon a number of personal competencies; it was based upon the desire to increase commitment and dedication towards the goal. In addition, there was the need for a person who would be able to successfully convey the message of the leadership to the followers. This needed to be achieved in a neutral and productive manner so that superior and positive outcomes could be attained. Furthermore, the role meant that I needed to be open and honest about certain ideas and values: such a strategy would lead to high levels of efficiency and effectiveness. Having said this, I experienced difficulties in ensuring that the team would be able to learn new competencies and skills. Empirical studies have documented that teamwork should be based upon the creation of a learning environment because it helps to create self knowledge and self development of followers (Yeatts, 2005: Pg 69). Hence the goal should be to create a collaborative environment where the followers can utilize their own skills as a means of resolving problems and making decisions. My role overlapped in many ways because of the team dynamics that were present in the group: I had to ensure that communication levels were open in the team. This is supported by the theory which states that successful teams need to develop cohesive and disciplined structures as a means of ensuring success in a difficult environment. I performed this role due my natural aptitudes for planning, scheduling, and organizing activities, and, as a consequence, I was able to direct the followers for achieving objectives in an efficient and effective manner (Yeatts, 2005: Pg 69). Teamwork can be successful only if the manager is able to recognize the talents of other individuals. In addition, the manager must be able to delegate tasks and resist the urge to ‘micro manage’ so that a sense of autonomy and ownership can be developed among the followers. A number of factors and competencies helped in achieving goals in an efficient manner: for example, my creativity enabled me to implement solutions to various problems by using a logical approach, and I applied rational thoughts as a means of making decisions as well and making sure I carefully facilitated the debating the strengths and weaknesses of specific approaches (Yeatts, 2005: Pg 69).

Further, I was able to establish rapport and empathy with my team members. Such a strategy can help to enhance the productivity of teams.

Alternative Action

I believe that the team could have undertaken a number of alternative actions in order to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. The manager needs to communicate clearly what is expected of the team to the leader as well as the members, and he should be able to clarify why the team has been created. In addition, I would have chosen the context of the mission for creating a disciplined team (Kirton, 2003: Pg 67). The team members should clearly know why they have been selected to be a part of a certain team. What are they expected to do in order to attain the team goal and can they suggest actions for themselves and their team mates for attainment of the given goal? I also believe that a team should have high levels of commitment and competence. It is extremely important to know if the selected member if fully committed to participating in the team. If the team member is positive about the goal, his role and expertise then he will be motivated to perform at his best level. It is also important to know the team views about its members. It should have the appropriate people who have the required values, notions, and competencies to perform the tasks (Lawlwer, 2001: Pg 96). Also, the manager needs to check if the team has taken the assigned responsibility properly and designed its own mission and plan of action: clear goals and outcomes must be elucidated as a means of ensuring efficiency and effectiveness. I have learned that collaboration is the key for the proper function of teams, and that it should be ensured by the team leader as well as the manager that all members of the team are collaborating and working in harmony – professionally, at least – for the fulfilment of the given task. The team should, more than anything, be clear about the priority of the tasks given and instructions and goals should not be ambiguous. There should be a feedback and suggestion method and information related to the task must be given to the team regularly (Kirkman & Rosen, 1999: Pg 58).

It should be considered whether the organization is ready to accept the suggestions and change and rewards of people who ‘think differently’ and innovatively, or does it reward those who keep the status quo maintained by just ‘plodding along’ and doing what they are told and what they have done before? Team members must be able to coordinate and cooperate in order to achieve the team success, and this can only be done when they are able to work together and be able to share their information and discuss their work with each other – though this does not mean that there cannot be a certain amount of tension and competition between team members (for example, many successful bands and song writing partnerships have been hotbeds of tension and argument!) Developing a team requires the manager to analyze the different cultures from which the team members have come so that he is able to understand the psyche of the members (Lawlwer, 2001: Pg 96).

I have learned that, when a group of people get together in an organized manner and either work together or independently but co-operate to satisfy the customer needs by accomplishing common goals, this is known as a team. These teams are created for long term goals such as a product development team, a departmental team etc, or for a short term such as a team to plan an annual company function, a presentation team, a problem solving team; but generally, the most common types of teams are functional/departmental, cross functional and self managing teams (Brannick & Prince, 1997: Pg 87). In order to complete its goal, each team works according to a plan but not every team is able to achieve success in completing their goals. I have learned that every successful team must be disciplined and cohesive in order to achieve success. In order to build a bond between members of a team, it is essential to focus on collective goals and values. Here the team leader has to make sure that every member of the team is interactive: this will generate informality and frankness between the team members that will help them work more informally and cohesively (Harryson, 2000: Pg 92). I have learned that in a successful team each member knows the essentials of the team: everyone is completely and unambiguously aware of what the more important thing is to the team – what is its ‘reason to be’ – and such teams work well accordingly. In a sport like basketball or football, each member is clearly aware that they have to score in order to win the game and collectively they try to improve their scoring abilities. Similarly, in an organization, if any member of the team is unaware of what is expected of him, he will not be able to perform his best and will also prevent the team from fulfilling its goal; thus, it is highly important – and, in fact, imperative – for the team leader to identify the team goals and communicate these goals to every member clearly.

I have learned that positive communication can enhance the overall success of the team in multifarious ways. Each member should be able to feel – and really believe – that they are working in an environment where they can give positive suggestions to their team matters and offer positive criticisms, develop and share ideas and information, and help each other free from fear or mockery. Open communication among the team members increases productivity (Harryson, 2000: Pg 92).

If a team is small in size, then it is easier to have constructive agreement on actions to be taken, and if the team is diverse and has people who differ in age, gender, culture, class, training, experience –and, perhaps most importantly, opinions and mind-set – then the chances are that more innovative solutions and “out of the box” ideas can be generated. Diversity makes the team more powerful, though diversity as narrowly defined in identity politics terms of race and gender, is arguably nowhere near as important as diversity of thought and ideas. Every time a team goal completes the team leader should make his team members seem valued and allow the team to celebrate its success. In this way, every member of the team feels satisfaction and even joy at their performance in the attainment of goals. This helps boost team morale and will ensure that the team continues to perform well in the next level of goal fulfilment. The celebration can be on a very small scale like enjoying a pizza lunch together (Harryson, 2000: Pg 92).

Teamwork has been defined as the ability of individuals to join each other in order to accomplish mutual goals and tasks. Successful teamwork is based upon a number of factors and competencies. At the core level, it is essential that the team has a direction and purpose in achieving its goals, and each member must be motivated and inspired to perform at optimum levels. Furthermore, individuals need to be selected based upon their knowledge and expertise. A sense of ownership should be given to team members in order to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. Successful teams should always function based upon the presence of smart leadership. A leader needs to guide the followers while giving them sense of responsibility and ownership: this helps to increase their levels of dedication and commitment. My experience in the team has enabled me to learn about various aspects of teamwork. I believe that it is important to have a cohesive structure that allows for resolving conflicts. Team dynamics should be created in such a way that superior outcomes can be attained. Commitment and dedication are important while shared values can be used to develop a sense of trust and confidence.

I would conclude that an efficient team should remove any personal obstacles by focusing on outcomes and respecting the views of each member. Talented and productivity members should be encouraged to apply innovative strategies for resolving complex situations and thus achieve goals.
