History of Kolkata: A Classic Journey of the City of Joy

Kolkata is the present day capital of Indian state West Bengal and among the few metro cities of India. The city is also famous as the ‘city of joy’. Situated at the eastern bank of river Hooghly, Kolkata is also India’s one of the largest cities. History of Kolkata dates back to the rule of Mughals before the British renamed the city as Calcutta.

The name Kolkata also has gone through several transformations from the history of its origin. Kolkata was known as Kolikata or Kalikata before the British developed the city and named as Calcutta.

Origin of the name Kalikata (Kolikata)

There are several theories that explains about the origin of the name Kalikata or Calcutta.

One theory mentions the name was derived from Hindu goddess Kali. According to this theory, the original name of the place was ‘Kalikshetra’ or the land of Kali. However, many people disagree to this theory.

Another theory states that the name Kalikata was a combination of two words Kali and kata. Kali means lime and kata denotes to burnt shell. Many experts believe, the region may have got the name since it had many shell-lime manufacturing units then.

Kolkata before British rule

There is not much historical record of Kolkata before the British traders settled in Bengal.

However, the existence of Kolkata is definitely visible in 15th century history. Bengali poet Bipradas of 15th century, had mentioned about Kalikata in his Manasa Mangal kavya (poem).

The rent rolls of Mughal emperor Akbar (1556–1605) also had mentions about Kalikata.

Trade set up in Bengal by East India Company (EIC)

History of Kolkata is formally noticeable rather documented after the British settlement in Bengal. However, it was never an easy job for the British EIC to build their factories and set up trade in former Calcutta.

British East India Company (EIC) agents made several attempts to set up trade at various places of Bengal and Bihar. Records suggest EIC agents even visited during period of Ibrahim Khan (1617-1624), who was Mughal Subahdar for Bengal Subah.

Several documents show how the British were beaten and wiped out from Bengal by forces of Mughal Empire . But they came back again and again to Bengal.

But Mughal emperor Aurangzeb did soon realize the amount of revenue he was loosing from British trades. Also company ships near Visapur, Maharashtra was causing trouble in pilgrimage to Mecca. Aurangzeb accounted these factors and ordered Ibrahim Khan, Governor of Bengal province to allow company to return in Bengal.

Ibrahim Khan asked Job Charnock to return to Bengal. But this time, Charnock refused to return without any written ‘firman’ issued to EIC. However, East India Company had to pay an annual tax of Rupees 3,000 to the Mughals according to the firman.

Foundation of Calcutta

Job Charnock, with Ibrahim Khan’s verbal assurance, arrived at Sutanuti in 1690 with 30 English soldiers. Charnock’s arrival proved a remarkable transformation in the history of Kolkata. The Mughal emperor’s firman took few months and eventually issued in 1691.

The region on the eastern bank of river Bhagirathi-Hugli (secondary branch of river Ganga) seemed perfect for setting up trades for EIC. However, Job Charnock died in 1692. But before he died, all proceeding towards foundation of Kolkata was set up.

British East India Company brought three villages in 1698, from a local landlord Sabarna Chowdhury. The purchase of Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kalikata was indeed a remarkable transformation in history of present Kolkata. EIC kept developing the three villages and declared the region as Presidency city of Calcutta in 1699.

History of Kolkata: development as a city

After acquisition of land, East India Company started establishing factories very quickly. They also began colonial developments in the new presidency city of Calcutta.

Construction of Fort William

East India Company wanted to construct a fort at Calcutta to protect their factories. But Ibrahim Khan did never accept the request.

In 1695, an Afghan commander Rahim Khan sieged the Hooghly town. Surrounded by enemies, the EIC requested Ibrahim Khan to allow fortification to protect EIC factories. Forced by the situation, Ibrahim Khan finally granted permission to build a fort at Calcutta.

Although the grant of fortification was subject to factory protection only. But his orders did not specify them properly. EIC misused the order and started building the fort immediately with available resources.

The EIC completed the construction of old Fort William by 1696. However, EIC named the fort in 1700 after the British King William III.

Black hole massacre at Old Fort William

In June, 1756, Siraj ud Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal, sieged the fort and the city.

Nawab’s army had put the surviving British soldiers into an 18 feet X 14 feet dark cell on the evening of 20 June 1756. Many soldiers died of extreme suffocation on the same night. On the next morning when the cell was opened, only 23 soldiers out of 146 remained alive.

A lot of disagreements exist on the numbers of soldiers died in that Black hole tragedy of 1656. Some records mention that only 64 prisoners were sent into the Black hole. 21 soldiers could only survive from Black hole massacre of Calcutta.

Siraj also renamed the city as Alinagar, after his maternal grandfather and previous Nawab Alivardi Khan.

Robert Clive arrived in Calcutta with a task to recapture the city and the fort from Siraj’s army. Next year in 1757, he defeated Siraj ud Daulah in the Battle of Plassey . The defeat of Nawab eventually influenced a dramatic turn around in the history of Murshidabad and Bengal. But EIC abandoned the old Fort William and planned to construct a new fort. The construction of New Fort William started in 1758 and completed in 1781.

The headquarters of the  Indian Ordnance Factories  was also established at New Fort William.

Writers’ Building of Kolkata

In 1772, Calcutta became the capital of British India.

EIC felt the need of consolidating the trading operations in India very soon. For this they needed to have an administrative office for junior clerks. The building got the name Writers’ Building as the clerks were known as writers.

Built in 1777, Writer’s Building had served administrative office and later, secretariat of Bengal province in British India. The building kept expanding until 1947, where 13 more blocks were added to the main block in different phases.

Writers’ Building or ‘Mahakaran’ served as Secretariat for the Government of West Bengal post Independence of India. However, the building has been temporarily discarded in 2013 for necessary renovation works. Hence the secretariat has been temporarily shifted to Nabanna at Howrah.

Transformation of education and social life in Kolkata

The importance of Calcutta enhanced a lot as it turned out to be the first capital of British India. It was only 2nd city of the British Empire then, just after London. Today’s city of joy was also renowned as the city of palaces during 18th century.

This transformation also reflected in education and social lives of 18th century’s Calcutta.

In 1780, the Calcutta General Publisher started printing India’s first newspaper.

Asiatic Society of Bengal

Sir William Jones founded Asiatic Society of Bengal by in 1784. The society and sir Jones started working very closely with many Indian scholars on various Indo-European languages. Hindu Pandits of Kalighat also worked very closely with the society.

As a result, western cultures started merging with Indian Hindu cultures. It gave a massive boost to Calcutta’s intellectual life.

Indian Museum Kolkata

In 1814, the Asiatic Society of Kolkata founded the Indian Museum, the largest and oldest museum in history of India. Danish botanist Nathaniel Wallich was the main curator of the museum.

The largest museum of India has a very large collection of  rare antiques, armours and ornaments, fossils, skeletons, mummies and Mughal paintings.

Educational developments

As the time progressed, western style institutions started developing in 19th century’s Kolkata.

In 1817, the Hindu College (presently, Presidency College) was established with efforts from Ram Mohan Roy, David Hare and Radhakanta Dev. The primary objective was to educate Hindu students in English and other European literatures.

Sanskrit College of Calcutta, established in 1824, aimed to provide indigenous education to the civil servants. The institution played a major role in Bengal’s educational reformation. For first 27 years, the college did not have any principal and were headed by a secretary only. Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar became the first principal of Calcutta Sanskrit College in 1851. The college rose to its prominent height during his principalship.

Kolkata got its first medical college in 1835 when Lord William Bentinck established Calcutta Medical College. The institute became the first English medium institute of India. Calcutta Medical College also was the second medical college of Asia studying Western medicine.

Sati prohibition act of 1829

Sati was probably the most culpable Hindu practice of 18th century. Hindu widows had to sit beside her deceased husband’s funeral pyre and immolate herself.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy raised his voice against the practice of Sati and started his campaigns against it. He also got commendable support from the British Christian evangelists. Finally in 1829, Lord William Bentinck brought the regulation act to declare the practice of Sati as illegal. The act applied across entire jurisdiction of British India as a punishable offence. It brought the much wanted end of practice of Sati in entire India.

Remarriage of Hindu widows

Young Hindu girls of 11-12 years being forced in marrying old men of 60+ years were very common then. As a result, they had to spend majority of their life as windows and suffer many social tortures. Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was the first to marry a Hindu window and help them lead a normal life. He also took a leading role in Hindu widow remarriage campaigns.

Contribution of Kolkata in freedom struggle of India

Calcutta had been the epicenter of India’s initial freedom struggles.

Revolt of 1857

The first freedom movement of India started from Barrackpore military barracks, from the suburbs of Calcutta. A spark ignited by Sepoy Mangal Pandey on 29 March 1857 eventually shook the pillars of the British empire. The unrest had spread many other military camps across British India giving it a grand volume.

Indian National Association

Indian National Association was the first recognized nationalist organization of the British India. Surendra Nath Banerjee and Ananda Mohan Bose founded the Indian National Association in 1876. The association soon became an important forum for Indian nationalists from various parts of the country.

The Association gave the young middle-class community a political platform on a more democratic basis. Surprisingly the association did not include big business leaders or landlords as members but mostly educated young men, lawyers, and journalists.

In 1883, Calcutta held the first all India national conference. It eventually gave birth to the Indian National Congress.

After foundation of Indian National Congress, the association lost its political importance. But the Indian National Association is still credited for initiating an idea to build a forum with leaders from all parts of the country.

Contribution of Calcutta in building Indian National Congress

Sir Umesh Chandra Banerjee became the first native president of Indian National Congress. He was also the first to advocate self-rule by Indians. Sir Surendra Nath Banerjee was another personality who provoked nationalist mindset in late 19th century.

In 1921, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose joined National Congress under Gandhiji’s leadership. Netaji became president of Congress in 1938.

Other freedom movements of Calcutta

Secret rebel organizations like Jugantar and Anushilan Samiti were active in Bengal during early 20th century. These organizations had used violence in their anti-British movements. Many of Jugantar and Anushilan Samiti members killed, arrested or deported to Andaman cellular Jail by the British.

Sri Aurobindo, Bipin Chandra Pal were the most eminent nationalist leaders in history of early 20th century Kolkata.

Influence of Bankim Chandra’s Vande Mataram song

Vande Mataram, a poem from Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s Anandamath influenced freedom movements of India. Rabindranath Tagore sang the song in a political context during 1886 session of Indian National Congress. Since then the song became the marching song for all forms of India’s freedom struggle.

Indian nationalist and philosopher Sri Aurobindo referred Vande Mataram as the National Anthem of Bengal. However, the British government had banned the song. National activists whoever defied, either were arrested or beaten.

On 24 January 1950, Vande Mataram became the National Song of India, adopted by Constituent Assembly of India.

Formation of Indian National Army or Azad Hind Fauz

Although the first Indian National Army formed in Japan. But Kolkata still had a very deep link with history of Azad Hind Fauz.

Rash Behari Bose firstly formed Indian National Army or INA on 1 September 1942 in collaboration with Japanese army. In December 1942, the Japanese disbanded the INA post few disagreements with INA commander Mohan Singh. Later in 1943, Subhash Chandra Bose revamped INA with war arrested British Indian soldiers from the battle of Singapore.

Rash Behari Bose handed over the charges of INA to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Initially, Netaji had so much faith in Gandhiji’s non-violent freedom movements (1921-1939). But in 1939, he left Indian National Congress realizing that World War II was the best time to build military ally with foreign countries to make India free from the British. The British government had house arrested Netaji at his Elgin road residence. However, he managed to escape secretly and reach Berlin, Germany seeking military support from Adolf Hitler.

Arts and literature between 18th and 20th century Kolkata

Kolkata had also been the epicenter of literature between 18th and 20th century’s history of India. The city had given birth to many writers and poets which is marked as Renaissance of Bengal or Bengali Renaissance.

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), a Bengali poet, writer, composer, philosopher and social reformer who reshaped Bengali arts and literature in 19th and 20th century. In 1913, Rabindranath Tagore became the first non-European and also the first lyricist to win Nobel Prize in Literature.

The famous song ‘Jana Gana Mana’ written by Rabindranath Tagore became the National Anthem of India. After freedom of Bangladesh in 1971, his another song ‘Amar Sonar Bangla’ also became the National Anthem of present Bangladesh. Rabindranath Tagore was the first to address Subhash Chandra Bose as Netaji which the entire nation followed thereafter.

Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (or, Chatterjee)(1838-1894) was another influential poet, novelist and journalist of late 19th century. His inspiring novels influenced many nationalist activists. Vande Mataram, the present National Song of India belongs to his novel ‘Anandamath’. Bankim Chandra’s sanskritized Bengali novels him as ‘Sahitya Samrat’ or King of Literature.

Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) dedicated his life in teaching and guiding the youths on social services and character building. His lectures and speeches across had inspired many youths across the world. Many young Indians came forward to serve the nation.

Cultural life of Kolkata

The culture of Kolkata concerns the music, art, museums, festivals, and lifestyle within Kolkata.

Durga Puja, the world famous festival of Kolkata earlier were limited among the rich and royal families of Kolkata. But during mid 19th century Bengal’s favorite festival got its most renowned communal form. Kolkata’s first ‘Sarbojonin Durga Puja’ or ‘Barowari Durga Puja’ happened 1910 off to Balaram Bose ghat of Adi Ganga. Efforts were taken jointly by the locals of Kalighat and Bhawanipore.

The city of Kolkata also had a very long history of commercial theatres. Star Theatre of Batibagan was built in 1883. Later with arrival of group theatres in the decade of 1940s, craze of commercial theatres had dropped a lot.

Group theatres of Kolkata, having no such profit making agenda, mostly focused on highlighting social messages. Hence, they played a key role in social reformation during 20th century’s Kolkata. Nabanna (1944) is considered to be the first among the group theatres ever played in Kolkata.

The city of dreams, the city of unhindered zeal and fervour, Kolkata is the heart of India. It is a magnificent city characterized by august rivers, handsome bridges, stupendous and majestic monuments, and the hustle – bustle on streets. This city is a living megacity which boasts of culturally rich ethnicity and exemplarily awarded leaders and laureates. This city has witnessed ancient, dignified and omnipotent dynasties rise and fall and has had innumerable rulers from the primitive period to the medieval British Viceroys and the contemporary leaders.

The real heart of the city lies in its people. The people of Kolkata are ‘food lovers’. The succulent and luscious delicacies including ‘Kosha Mangsho’, ‘chingri’ and ‘ilish maach’, ‘Shukto’, ‘Phuchka’ and mouthwatering sweets like Rasogullas and chomchoms provide prominence to the city. The capital of West Bengal, Kolkata is also one of the four metropolitan cities of India. Being a hub of culture the ‘City of Joy’ sways in exuberance and ecstasy in October, during the auspicious occasion of Durga Puja. The people remain engrossed in various activities throughout the ten days of the festival. They engage themselves in pandal hopping, worshipping the idols of the Goddess and satisfying their hunger. The luminescence and embellishment in the city throughout the year are most praiseworthy.

One can experience and explore all the colours of life in this city. The city is prominent for its heritage, literacy and art. The legendary filmmaker, Satyajit Ray and the distinguished and eminent poet and author, Rabindranath Tagore come from this city. Renowned Bollywood actors like Rani Mukherjee and Mithun Chakraborty also belong to this city. No one can forget to mention the Prince of Kolkata – ‘Sourav Ganguly’. Some sundry other significant monuments and obelisks give this city a sign of special recognition; Victoria Memorial, Shaheed Minar, Fort William being some of them. The memorable Howrah Bridge and the captivating Vidyasagar Setu which lie on the banks of the river Ganga exhibit the splendid architecture of the city. At evening, one can glance upon the resplendent sea-green river waters, the boats returning to the shore and experience the serenity and tranquillity while in the Princep Ghat. Kolkata was the first city in India to offer underground metro services. Moreover, travelling within the city is quite convenient as one can avail traditional hand-pulled rickshaws, trams, yellow taxis and steamers. The scenery is always yellowish blue in Kolkata.

There are delights and surprises at every moment in this city. If one is taking a train to Kolkata, the fuss at the Howrah Station is sure to raise his spirits who gets attracted by the balloon sellers, the sweet shops and the florists. The city also has many museums and galleries. The Indian Museum, for instance, is the largest museum in the country and the National Library is also a place for rejuvenation for avid readers. One must pay a visit to The ‘Missionaries of Charity’ or other old age homes and orphanages. The greatest possible attraction of the city is the horse carriage (Tonga) ride which is a must. There is no end to amusement in this city. The colonial relic is still intact with the names of countless dense streets in Kolkata. And, it doesn’t end there.

The Alipore Zoo and Botanical Gardens are perfect sites for nature lovers. Thousands of creatures and plants are found in these sites, making Kolkata intensely exquisite. The Eden Gardens and the Salt lake Stadium are world-famous stadiums where numerous celebrated players have made records. It is also an ideal place for shopping. Tourists from around the globe visit New Market, Burr Bazar, and Maidan to shop. With the arrival of Christmas, the city is full of glee and a visit to Park Street to view the lightings and ornamentations is a compulsion for many. This city was and is also home to many freedom fighters and reformers like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Rani Rasmoni and Raja Ram Mohan Roy.

The culture of Kolkata is strengthened when the citizens take pride to speak and converse in the regional language, Bengali. The best part of the city is its affordability. The city can be equally enjoyed by the rich and the poor. It offers great quality and services at minimal rates.

However, every rose has a thorn. With the rapid growth in industry and technology, the city is experiencing modernization. However, a major problem that this city has been facing for these recent years is pollution. Air pollution from factories and engines being the chief medium, other types of pollution are also prevalent. The increase in slums which serve as pockets of poverty and sundry other aspects perhaps makes this city no different from the other metropolitan ones. The regular traffic on roads and the huge population are other negativities that prevail. However, the positives inevitably outweigh the negatives. Kolkata is a city that cannot be compared with others. It always opens its heart and embraces me and I grasp the love that it delivers for me.

The bustling capital of the Indian state of West Bengal, Kolkata is a living megacity which boasts of culturally rich ethnicity and exemplarily awarded leaders and laureates. It has been the pot boil of various historical movements and literary renaissances.

Jawaharlal Nehru once said, “Kolkata is the city of processions, of political manifestations”.

It is also a home for many great artists and revolutionists like Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, Subhash Chandra Bose, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Mother Teresa and Satyajit Ray. There are various aspects to this third most productive and populated metropolitan city of India.

History of Kolkata

 The East India Company took over the trade and gave the name Calcutta in the 17th century. It was a huge colonial city and the capital of the British Indian empire till 1911. Later the capital was shifted to Delhi owing to the growing nationalism among the demography.

It was also the busiest and biggest trade port under the British empire. Western education and influences first came in India in Calcutta where it became a global city due to the amalgamation of European sciences and literature with Indian art and traditions. It was the hub of independence movements and revolutionary ideas.   

Architecture 

• North Kolkata : This is the area which was most inhabited by the British and the 19th century Victorian style architecture is testimonial to that. It is brimming with overpopulated dwellings and greatly active bazaars. Shyambazaar, Chitpur, Shobhabazaar, Dum Dum, Maniktala are popular centers.  
• Central Kolkata : This is the important business hub of government and private offices like the RBI and the High Court. The Maidan is often cited as the ‘lungs of Kolkata’ as it is in the heart of the city. Victoria Memorial and Kolkata Race Course are present in its vicinity. Central Park and Millennium Park are also popular areas.  
• East Kolkata : This is relatively new and is recently been planned and developed. The Salt Lake City or Bhidannagar, Rajarhat (New Town), Beliaghata are centres of IT and telecommunications industry.  
• South Kolkata : This is the locality which is considered posh and highly developed. Lansdowne, Santoshpur, Golf Green, Ballygunge and Alipore are main attractions. The headquarters for the Eastern Command of the Indian Army is at Fort William.  

  Climate  

 Mostly moderate, climate in Kolkata is fairly pleasant and tropical. The summers which extend from March to June are hot and humid. The winter is not harsh. The coldest month is January where temperatures have sometimes gone to 5 degrees Celsius.

The months of April to June entail heavy rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms. This time is called the ‘kal- boishakhi’. The pollution levels are alarming and increase the risk of lung cancer and other diseases needs to be curbed with.  

 The sex ratio in Kolkata is 899 females per 1000 males (this is lower than the national average). According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is above eleven million and the literacy rate is 87.14%, higher than the national average. Bengali Hindus are a majority.

They worship Goddess Durga and celebrate Durga Pooja with utmost fervour. Kolkata is known for making enchanting sculptures of Mahishasurmardini (Goddess Durga who killed the demon Mahishasur). People here also have great academic inclination.

This place is different from other cities of India because it focuses on football and sports other than just cricket. Residents of Kolkata are known to be modern, logical and intelligent. Marwadis, Biharis and Assamese people are large minorities.  

Kolkata is the major centre for finance and commerce in Eastern India. It is the only city in the east to have an international airport.

Once, it was the financial market of India but due to drop in economy post independence, when leftists kept hurdling the offices with strikes and extreme militant unions marred the commerce scene in the city, the city suffered decline in its popularity as a financial hub and began to be called ‘the dying city’.

It has, however, gained steady progress again and is now a big competition even to international cities.  

Often dubbed as the ‘City of Furious, Creative energy’, the culture, media or sports chapters in this city are a vivacious kaleidoscope of the creative and modern minds of Kolkata. People here love to eat – the innumerable sweets, fish dishes and savoury snacks available at every household and nook and corner of the city is the heartbeat of its culture.

‘Sondesh’, a sweet made of milk extract or ‘chhena’ and ‘rasgulla’, a syrupy white milk ball, are evergreen favourites. Among main dishes, various gourmet fish curries and recipes are something Kolkata and in general Bengalis pride themselves on.

Kolkata’s street food game is top notch as well – inspired by European pallet, the Kathi Roll or noodles served within an egg white wrap is unanimously the number one snack voted by college and office goers. It is a dreamland for foodies. Even in the field of fashion and media, the public is inspirational.   

It is often said that Kolkata houses India’s best singers and aplomb talent for fine arts. Various universally acknowledged painters, writers, singers, dancers, sculptors, engineers and scientists take pride in calling Kolkata their home.

Writers’ Building by Thomas Lyon: Kolkata’s first three storied building

This is achieved by reorienting contemporary approaches to urban planning by urban designers to create a more flexible model per the demand of the present living conditions. This new approach is known as Urban Heritage . 

Urban heritage is a passive setting to the broader scope of development of modern cities keeping in mind the historic discipline. It takes an ethical, inclusive, and holistic approach to urban planning and heritage conservation by creating a stronger ground for the sustainable growth of cities in the future.

Architecture has been a part of a revolution for a long time. Architecture in the long run was a silent statement to convey certain thoughts and emotions. Our architectural history doesn’t just concern the key elements of an adopting style but also the historic value for a strong understanding of prevalent past occurrences. Believe it or not but most of these remarkable old buildings have caused a commotion in the past that led to massive history-changing movements. 

One such politically, socially, and historically influencing building is the Writers’ Building .

This heritage building was the first three-storied building of Colonial Calcutta. Writers’ building is a 150-meter-long building that covers the entire northern stretch of the Lal Dighi pond and sits at the center of historic B.B.D. Bagh. This grand old structure was designed by architect Thomas Lyon in 1777 and now serves as a secretariat building of the State Government of West Bengal . Writers’ Building is the epitome of classic European architecture in India.

Locally known as Writers’, the building was originally meant to serve as a principal administrative office to accommodate junior clerks or ‘writers’ of the British East India Company (EIC). The distinct Greco-Roman architectural style of the structure holds a portico in the central bay and several marvelously carved statues lining the terrace namely Justice, Commerce, Science, and Agriculture. The sculpted work of William Fredric Woodington in 1883 includes the figurines of Greek gods along with a sculpture of the Roman goddess Minerva capturing attention from the pediment. Red exposed brick surface adds to its splendor.

Being intertwined with the social, cultural, historical, and political ethos of the city, the building kept evolving over the years. Initially, the simplistic structure comprised 19 residential living quarters outlooking three sets of windows each. In 1800, an iconic façade was created with 32ft high majestic Ionic columns supporting a 128ft long veranda to accommodate the Fort William College and the Government Engineering College within its premises. 

The period between the years 1879-1906 saw the addition of two new blocks, accessible by impressive iron staircases . Writers’ had a large courtyard with seven blocks before independence which increased to 13 by the year 1970. A French Renaissance-style makeover was given to the building under the rule of British Governance, to make it appear more ornate and almost palatial in terms of its architecture.

The Writers’ Building has been a silent witness to many political events that made a major impact on the times. Among the many notable events that occurred during the building’s lifetime, the most memorable one was the assassination of the infamous Inspector General of Prisons, Lt Col NS Simpson by three Bengali revolutionaries – Benoy Basu, Badal Gupta, and Dinesh Gupta, after whom the BBD Bagh got its unique identity.

The importance of the Writers’ building is still afresh and immersed in the hearts of the Kolkattians as it is a reminder of the journey from suppression to oppression leading to independence . From flourishing trade to revolutions, murders to celebrations, slavery to freedom, the Writers’ has been a silent spectator to all. 

A testimony of the historical evolution, this landmark structure bears the history on its façade and figurines, for tourists to admire. This historic treasure now lays majestic and barren, as it is undergoing restoration. Writers’ building still manages to retain its grandeur from its glory days and remains a heritage site and a renowned tourist location in the city of Kolkata.

Born as Narendranath Dutta on 12 th January 1863 in the holy and divine place of Kolkata, Swami Vivekananda was a great Indian saint. He was a figure with “high thinking and simple living”. He was a great pious leader, a philosopher, and also a devout personality with great principles.  His eminent philosophical works comprise of “Modern Vedanta” and “Raj Yoga”. He was a principal disciple of “Ramkrishna Paramhansa” and was an initiator of Ramkrishna Math and Ramkrishna Mission . He thus spent his whole life in the dispersion of the values embedded in the great Indian culture.

Childhood Days

Swami Vivekananda , the son of Shri Vishwanath and mother Bhuvneshwari Devi was called by the name “Narendranath Dutta” in the early days. Narendra was a child of unquestioned expertise and intellectual capability who used to take grasp of all his school teachings at first sight.

This excellence was recognized by his Gurus and thus was named “Shrutidhar” by them. He possessed manifold talents and skills comprising of swimming, wrestling which were a part of his schedule. Influenced by the teachings of Ramayana and Mahabharata, he had bottomless respect for religion. “Pavan Putra Hanuman” was his ideal for life.

Narendra was a lover of heroism and mystical by nature. Despite his upbringing in a spiritual family, he owned an argumentative personality in his infancy. His entire beliefs were assisted by an apt rationale and judgment behind them. Such a quality made him even put a question on the existence of the Almighty. He thus visited several saints and asked each one “have you seen God?”His spiritual quest left unanswered until he met “Ramkrishna Paramhansa”.

Meeting with Ramkrishna Paramhansa and Harmonization of Indian Culture

Swami Vivekananda met Ramkrishna Paramhansa for the first time when the latter visited his friend’s residence in Kolkata. Conscious of the supernatural powers of Swami Vivekananda called him to Dakshineshwar. He had a deep insight that Swamiji’s birth was a boon to mankind for the upliftment of the universe. Fulfillment of his spiritual inquisitiveness made he finally acknowledge Ramkrishna Paramhansa in the figure of his “Guru”. He was moved from darkness to illumination by his “Guru”. As his deep gratitude and reverence for his Guru made him travel all the four directions for the diffusion of his Guru’s teachings.

Swamiji won the hearts of everyone by his incredible speech at Chicago by addressing the audience as “Sisters and Brothers of America”

Vivekananda quoted these words” I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal tolerance but we accept all religions as true.” Thus, he set forward the worth of Indian religion exhibiting the values of universal acceptance, oneness, and harmony despite multiplicity in cultures.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose once said,” Swamiji harmonized the East and the West, religion, and science, past and the present and that is why he is great.” He played a prominent role in ending India’s cultural remoteness from the rest of the world.

A figure of highest ideals and great thoughts, Swamiji was an inspiration for the Youth of India.  Through his teachings he wanted to fill the young brains with the powers of self-realization, character formation, to recognize inner strengths, service to others, an optimistic outlook, tireless efforts and a lot more.

His famous quotations include, “Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached.” He also added that anything making a child physically, intellectually and spiritually weak must be rejected as a poison. He also emphasized on an education that leads to character formation.

His establishment of “Ramkrishna Math” and “Ramkrishna Mission” was a sign of “Guru Bhakti”, his sacrifice, austerity, and service of the poor and the downtrodden people of India. He was also a founder of Belur Math.

He spread the message of divinity and the true aims of scriptures. This great patriotic monk of the Mother Earth took his last breath on 4 th July 1902 at Belur Math.

Swamiji carried the messages of the rich and varied heritage of Indian culture and Hinduism, non-duality, selfless love, and service towards the nation. His mesmerizing personality with the highest virtues illuminated the young minds. His teachings aroused the realization of the power of the soul in them.

Thus, we celebrate his “Avtaran Divas” 12 th January, as the National Youth Day with great zeal and enthusiasm.

About the organizer

The Society of International Law and Policy (‘SILP’) of the National University of Juridical Sciences is an academic society that seeks to create awareness about contemporary international issues of legal importance. The Society runs the SILP Blog which has been recognized as one of the Top 30 International Law Blogs .

It seeks to develop a synergy between law and policy at the international level while recognizing that geo-political trends in the transnational space have impacts at the municipal level. This essay competition seeks to further discourse on relevant topics in contemporary international law.

SILP is inviting submissions for the “2 nd NUJS SILP Essay Writing Competition 2024”.

Details about the event

The 2nd NUJS SILP Essay Competition is being organized in collaboration with the NUJS Centre of International Law and Diplomacy. This competition aims to further discourse on relevant topics in contemporary international law. Participants in this pan-India competition have a chance to win cash prizes, publication opportunities, and merit certificates from NUJS.

Essay Themes

• South Africa v. Israel: A Gateway for a Communitarian Approach in International Law.
• Nuclear Disarmament in the 21st Century: A Way Forward.
• Contribution of General International Law to Various Fields of International Law.

These are broad themes. Participants are encouraged to narrow them down further.

Eligibility Criteria

Students currently enrolled in any program in any recognized Law School / College / University in India may make a submission.

Online submission via Google Form.

Registration procedure

Direct submission via Google Form mentioned at the end of this post.

• First place: Rs 5000 and merit certificate
• Second place: Rs 3000 and a merit certificate
• Third place: Rs 2000 and a merit certificate

The top ten entries will be considered for publication on the SILP Blog or released as a special edited volume.
