  • Setting Lock / Availability Dates

Updated on Dec 08, 2021

In Canvas you can control when content is available to students by setting Availability / Lock Dates.

Availability Dates can be set for activities like Assignments and Quizzes, which determine when students can view the item's description as well as submit / engage with the activity.

Lock Dates are set at the Module level and control when students are allowed to access and view content (i.e. files, discussions, assignments, quizzes, etc.), as well as submit / engage with the items within the Module.

It is possible to use both Availability and Lock Dates to limit and control student access and engagement with course content through these date restrictions.

Availability dates in assignments / quizzes.

Locking a Module makes it so that students can see the items in the module, but when they click on an item (i.e. file, assignment, discussion, etc.) the item page will say that the item is locked until the date you set. No specific content information or engagement is available in items that are in a locked Module.

Unlock or relock your Canvas course after the term ends

On this page:

Unlock a course

Relock a course.

After a Canvas course's term has ended, the course becomes read-only for enrolled students. Instructors can no longer add or remove members using the People tool, send messages to students in the course, or edit course content. As an instructor, to perform these functions after the term has ended, use the Unlock Course button to reopen the course. You can later relock the course using the Lock Course button.

To unlock a Canvas course after the term has ended:

  • Navigate to the course you want to unlock, and from the course navigation menu, select Settings .

Unlock Course button from course's Settings page in Canvas

  • After the page automatically refreshes, your course will be unlocked, and the course end date will be set to one month from the current date. If you're satisfied with this end date, you don't need to take further action.
  • If you want the course to remain open for a longer or shorter period of time, in the "Ends:" field, revise the course end date, and then click Update Course Details to save your changes.

You should now be able to make changes throughout your course. The course will now appear above the "Past Enrollments" heading on your personal "All Courses" page.

To relock a course you have previously unlocked:

  • Navigate to the course you want to lock, and from the course navigation menu, select Settings .

Lock Course button from course's Settings page in Canvas

  • After the page automatically refreshes, your course will be locked and the course end date will be blank.

The course will now appear under the "Past Enrollments" heading on your personal "All Courses" page.

Lock an assignment

You can control when students can access or submit an assignment by locking an assignment. Lock an assignment to restrict students from accessing it until the date you set. Or, you can lock submissions to prevent students from submitting assignments after a date you set (e.g. the day after the due date). Note : these steps do not work for discussion assignments.

Lock an assignment :

  • In the course navigation, click Assignments , then click on the name of the assignment.

interface for locking an assignment

  • Under Assign to , choose the section you wish to lock the assignment for. You can also leave it as Everyone .
  • Under Available From , enter the earliest date students can access the assignment.
  • Under Until , enter the latest date that students can access the assignment. Time of day is optional.
  • Click Save or Save & Publish .

Assignments on Canvas Shouldn’t be Locked.

College is very much a balancing act—attempting to stay on top of assignments whilst also trying to have time for work, hobbies, and friends.

It is stressful enough  without the added anxiety of a constricting timeline. While it is understandable that professors may not want students to barrel ahead blindly–it makes no sense to have these assignments unviewable.

Personally, as a perfectionist who likes following a routine, not being able to view assignments just clogs the gears.

Not being able to see the assignments before the upcoming week makes no sense. What is the worst that can come from students seeing the requirements?

Most would simply want to know what to expect for the coming week, or to perhaps get a head start.

With many assignments being due early in the week, getting access to the assignments on Monday mornings, just makes the work more rushed.

If an assignment is due early in the week, why not allow it to be viewable the week prior? That way, students can get a head start and turn in their best work rather than rushing through the work.

While professors may not want students to turn in the assignments extremely early–it doesn’t mean the students can’t at least view the assignment.

Submissions could be turned off to ensure that students aren’t just turning in work to get it done. This way, students can see the work needed in advance and get started while teachers have peace of mind knowing they can’t turn in the work just yet.

With many college students having a minimum of four courses, it is unrealistic to hide assignments until the week they’re due. This will only cause students to stress out and turn in half-baked work as they have more limited time.

Responsibilities also can creep up at any time, which adds more reason to not lock assignments. If a student knows they have limited time the week an assignment is due, they can go to the unlocked assignment and complete it early so their week is free for whatever task popped up.

While professors may think this will cause students to go ahead of their means, I don’t believe it to be that simple.

If a student were to see an assignment and not understand its meaning–then they can wait for the module to officially begin to be taught. They can keep to their normal routine while students who do understand can get a head start on their work.

Locking assignments only aims to hold students back as they are unable to see what is yet to come. Allowing them to at least view the assignments will help them to better grasp concepts, and get a head start before the due date arrives.

Is there some setting in Canvas to see assignments on the next day?

My dumbass just missed a very important assignment that was really due on Sunday bc the instructor posted it technically for 8 am next day. I understand why they did it: it allows to stay late on the weekend and finish it, but as a result I did not see it on Canvas list view. I just forgot to check for tomorrow bc I was running late on another assignment.

I am afraid that as long as I rely on myself to not forget to check every next day for early-morning assignments, I'll eventually be busy with something, and this will happen again.

Is there some setting for Canvas or maybe a browser extension that allows to see early-morning assignments on the same day in the list view? I am thinking of changing my time zone on Canvas, but it is a workaround that'll mess up all other classes. It can't be that I'm the only Canvas user in the world who ever forgets to check next day assignments :)
