Swing in Java is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) toolkit that includes the GUI components. Swing provides a rich set of widgets and packages to make sophisticated GUI components for Java applications. Swing is a part of Java Foundation Classes(JFC), which is an API for Java GUI programing that provide GUI.

The Java Swing library is built on top of the Java Abstract Widget Toolkit ( AWT ), an older, platform dependent GUI toolkit. You can use the Java simple GUI programming components like button, textbox, etc., from the library and do not have to create the components from scratch.

In this Java Swing tutorial, you will learn Java GUI basics like-

Container classes are classes that can have other components on it. So for creating a Java Swing GUI, we need at least one container object. There are 3 types of Java Swing containers.

  • Panel : It is a pure container and is not a window in itself. The sole purpose of a Panel is to organize the components on to a window.
  • Frame : It is a fully functioning window with its title and icons.
  • Dialog : It can be thought of like a pop-up window that pops out when a message has to be displayed. It is not a fully functioning window like the Frame.

GUI (Graphical User Interface) in Java is an easy-to-use visual experience builder for Java applications. It is mainly made of graphical components like buttons, labels, windows, etc. through which the user can interact with an application. GUI plays an important role to build easy interfaces for Java applications.

Now in this Java GUI Tutorial, let’s understand how to create a GUI in Java with Swings in Java examples.

The Layout manager is used to layout (or arrange) the GUI Java components inside a container. There are many layout managers, but the most frequently used are-

A BorderLayout places components in up to five areas: top, bottom, left, right, and center. It is the default layout manager for every java JFrame

FlowLayout is the default layout manager for every JPanel . It simply lays out components in a single row one after the other.

It is the more sophisticated of all layouts. It aligns components by placing them within a grid of cells, allowing components to span more than one cell.

Today we will learn about Java GUI programming

First, the GUI components were bundled in a library called Abstract Windows Toolkit (AWT) (platform specific)

Swing components

Platform independent user-interface components (Button, Textfield, TextArea, etc.)

The AWT helper classes (Graphics, colour, Font, etc.) are used to give the “look and feel” specific to the operating system used.

The Swing Class Hierarchy

A Frame is a window that is not contained inside another window.

A Frame is the base that contains other user interface components in Java graphical applications.

The Frame class can be used to create windows.

The ‘Swing’ GUI frame component is the JFrame class

Java GUI classes inherit many methods from their superclasses, including the ability to draw themselves – the paintComponent() method

Creating Frame

By default, a frame is displayed in the upper-left corner of the screen.

It is also displayed as small as possible – hence in example we call : frame.setSize(400, 300);

To display a frame at a specified location, you can use the setLocation(x, y) method in the JFrame class.

This method places the upper-left corner of a frame at location (x, y). Example shows how to get screen size (Toolkit)

Adding Components into a Frame

A Frame alone is not much use. We want to add GUI components such as Buttons, text boxes and labels

Components are always added to Containers. A Container is a Java class (object) that can contain other components.

A JFrame class (and all Swing components) has a Container associated with it. To get it, use the getContentPane () method

Standard JFrame does not give us all required facilities

Recommended method is to derive our own class by extending existing JFrame object, & adding custom data and methods :

myFrame constructor – useful place to write code to add other components to frame

Add additional methods – e.g JButton actionPerformed () handling code

Entry point : main() method can be included within our new class or placed in a separate class, – netbeans prefers separate class & file

Using Panels as Containers

Panels act as smaller containers for grouping user interface components.

It is recommended that you place the user interface components in panels and place the panels in a frame.

You can place panels inside a ‘holding‘ panel.

An event is a type of signal to our program that something has happened.

An event is generated by external actions such as mouse movements, mouse button clicks, keystrokes or by the operating system, such as a timer or a window closing

Java implements a set of classes that encapsulates the behaviour of events - all derived from EventObject

We must supply the code for the JVM to call when an event occurs. (Default – nothing happens !)

Uses ‘Interface’ – Template code that specifies the Methods we must supply, but doesn’t give us the Base class to derive from.

Java Classes can only extend (inherit) from one parent, but can implement a number of interfaces

Create a component that can generate an event E.g. JButton creates an ActionEvent when clicked.

Create a class that implements the listener interface for the event of interest :

Provide the Method for the JVM to call when the event occurs. The ActionListener interface requires an actionPerformed Method

Objective: Display two buttons OK and Cancel in the window. A message is displayed on the console to indicate which button is clicked, when a button is clicked.

The Color Class

r, g, and b specify a color by its red, green, and blue components. r, g, b are ints in range 0 .. 255

You can also use the g.setColor(Color c) method of the graphics class to set the ‘pen’ colour for all subsequent drawing operations

GUI programming has many benefits, both in terms of how you learn to program and what you can do with your programs once they’re written. Java GUI programming allows you to create graphical user interfaces (GUIs) with just the use of Java code, making it much more intuitive and easy to write than other types of code-based GUIs, such as those created using C++ and Visual Basic. Once you’ve learned how to create simple Java GUI programs, you can build even larger, more complex applications that are still relatively easy to manage and use on a day-to-day basis. Java GUI programming, or Java AWT programming, depending on the version of Java being used, can be an incredibly useful skill to have. When you master Java GUI programming , you can use it to create rich user interfaces (UI) in your own programs that allow users to interact with your code without having to dive into the nitty-gritty details of what’s going on under the hood. By reading through this tutorial and completing the exercises provided, you’ll not only be able to understand how Java GUI programming works, but you’ll also be able to use it yourself! Java GUI programming can seem intimidating at first glance due to a large number of GUI components in the Java libraries, but don’t let that deter you from learning how to program with the Java GUI classes. This article will walk you through the basics of Java GUI programming, showing you how easy it is to program your first GUI application. I’ll even show you how to create and manage custom components and handle user events using examples from my own work in the industry as well as my popular online tutorials. By the end of this article, you’ll have a solid foundation for building your own advanced Java GUI applications.

Differences Between Programming GUIs And Other Types Of Programming

In Java, it’s not just about learning syntax (which is important, of course). Instead, you’ll also need to learn how to create a good user interface. If you’re familiar with creating a program that lets users enter data but shows no visual output on screen – such as when you type words into a Word document or numbers into a spreadsheet program – then you’re well-prepared for your first Java GUI programming assignment. While many different programs use GUIs to let users work with information and systems in different ways, all Java programs require them because they allow for user interaction. As you begin working with Java, there are some key differences between developing a GUI application and developing other types of applications that you should keep in mind. This includes thinking about what goes where on-screen and how it will be presented to users. For example, menus usually appear at the top of windows while buttons appear alongside text boxes so that both can be clicked at once. Other elements may include labels, checkboxes, radio buttons, scrollbars, and so forth. Your task is to come up with an idea for an application based around these components and develop its look by deciding what color scheme to use along with whether to use multiple screens or panels.

What do You need To Know Before Learning To Make GUI Programs?

If you’re already familiar with Java and have developed console applications, you may be eager to jump into Java GUI programming. If you address these issues early on, you’ll find it much easier to get started with your first Java desktop program. Let’s take a look at each one in more detail. Applet security – Web browsers warn users if applets can read or write data outside of their own area or try to access sensitive functions like making network connections or system calls. All of these issues can compromise user privacy, so web browsers don’t allow them unless applets explicitly request permissions using standard APIs defined by Sun Microsystems (the organization behind Java). Using sun.* classes – Although not strictly required for working with Java GUIs, using java.* classes like Label and Button will help ease integration with other code. In addition, all JLabel components share common behavior so changing a label’s text automatically updates other instances of JLabel without any additional work by you.

How To Make a Program With a Graphical User Interface (GUI)?

First, you will need to download and install Java. There are several different versions of Java, but they all work similarly. You should have a run file (JAR file) in your start menu or on your desktop called something like ‘java’ or ‘java -jar’. If you can’t find it, search your computer for Java and you should find it. When you open that file, a box may pop up telling you that a security exception has occurred due to an unrecognized publisher. This is normal if you have downloaded Java yourself from Oracle (the official site), so go ahead and click on the [Run] button and then select [Yes]. The java development kit is now installed on your computer! To make sure it works, try typing ‘Hello World!’ into a text editor such as Notepad++ and saving it as hello.txt. Then type java HelloWorld into cmd or terminal (if you’re using Linux). Note that there’s no period at the end of HelloWorld. After running these commands, you should see something similar to what’s shown below. Congratulations! You’ve just written your first program with a graphical user interface! What Is Swing?

The Swing portion of Java’s GUI acronym stands for the graphical user interface. A graphical user interface (GUI) is a layer of software that interacts with and controls graphics (and possibly other forms of input). In many ways, it operates as a layer between you, as a programmer, and your code. When writing programs in Java, you will use something called a GUI to give your users an interface that they can easily interact with. The best way to think about Swing is as an application framework ; it handles all of these tasks for you so that you can focus on making your program work correctly. In fact, you’ll find that learning how to make applications using Swing is pretty easy. Even if you’ve never written a line of code before, by reading through this guide and taking notes, I’m sure you’ll be able to learn how quickly! This tutorial covers everything from basic programming concepts like objects and methods up to more advanced topics like handling events within your application. Swing Components

With Java, you can construct a graphical user interface (GUI) with Swing. Swing is an application framework that supports widget-based interfaces, and it has several useful components such as labels, text fields, buttons, and checkboxes. All of these components can be added to a JFrame object; hence, they form a frame of your GUI window. Later on, in your development journey, you’ll learn about Swing’s advanced components such as lists and trees. Some of those are more complex than basic ones and require significant code to implement; so let’s take one step at a time! In today’s post, we’ll discuss how to create simple GUIs using primitive Swing widgets like text fields and buttons. For example, if you’re working on a program for ordering ice cream cones online, then you might want to add two text fields for selecting cone size and topping selection. This way users can specify their preferences before submitting their order. Similarly, if you’re developing a word processor or spreadsheet application, then users will need some means of entering text into cells or entering numbers into cells containing formulas. These are just two examples out of many different types of applications where Swing components come in handy when creating your GUI windows.

Containers and Containers

Java has a bit of a learning curve. There’s just so much to learn! If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t panic! The good news is that there are some built-in tools and helpful resources that can help make learning Java easier. For example, NetBeans IDE and IntelliJ IDEA both have code-aware features that let you find classes, methods, and variables more easily. With a little effort, you’ll be able to dive in with confidence! This is not an exhaustive list of what your title could look like but it should give you an idea of how to create titles for your professional blogs. Event Handling In Swing Applications

Event handling is done in an application through event listeners. A listener is a piece of code that is activated when a certain kind of event happens. For example, if you want to execute code when your user clicks on a button, you need to create an object of javax. swing.JButton class and add it as an element to JFrame which holds all other widgets/components in its content pane. In order for our widget(button) to perform some action, we need to define methods within our class and then register them with appropriate listeners using a mechanism called ‘event delegation’. The listener could be in different states such as listening or not listening. If a listener is registered with an event source (for example, another component), but there are no active listeners for that specific type of event, then no events will be delivered.

To allow events to reach components in Swing applications, each component has its own listener interface. When events occur on these components, they are passed along until they find their target component’s implementation of their corresponding interface method. If there are multiple implementations of an interface method defined by multiple classes (each implementing one or more interfaces), then Java uses dynamic binding at runtime to choose which implementation should handle each particular type of event. Java Swing | Simple User Registration Form

Swing is a part of the JFC (Java Foundation Classes) . Building Graphical User Interface in Java requires the use of Swings. Swing Framework contains a large set of components which allow a high level of customization and provide rich functionalities, and is used to create window-based applications. Java swing components are lightweight, platform-independent, provide powerful components like tables, scroll panels, buttons, list, color chooser, etc.

In this article, we’ll see how to make a Registration form which includes all the buttons and field in one Form.

Steps:  

1. Create a Java file that contains the main class – Registration. This class will only contain the main method to invoke the required methods.

2. Create another class MyFrame, which will contain the form.

3. In this MyFrame Class, the methods to be made are:

  • Components like JLabel , JTextField , JRadioButton , ButtonGroup , JComboBox , and JTextArea . These components will collectively form the Registration form.
  • A constructor , to initialize the components with default values.
  • A method actionPerformed() to get the action performed by the user and act accordingly.
  • 4. Copy the code of MyFrame class from below.
  • 5. Save the file as Registration.java

6. Compile the file by using javac command.

7. Run the program by calling the main class

This brick breaker game is one of many fun Java projects that has you trying to break bricks at the top of the screen. The player controls a tiny ball placed on a small platform at the bottom of the screen, which can be moved around from left to right using the arrow keys. The goal is to break the bricks without missing the ball with your platform. The project makes use of Java swing and OOPS concepts , among other things.

Data Visualization has become important as it displays data visually using statistical graphics and scientific visualization, to the point where data visualization software has been created. This project displays the node connectivity in networking in data visualization form. This node connectivity can be located at different locations via mouse or trackpad. 

6. ATM Interface

This somewhat complex Java project consists of five different classes and is a console-based application. When the system starts the user is prompted with a user id and user pin. After entering the details successfully, the ATM functionalities are unlocked. 

7. Web Server Management System

This web server management system project deals with the information, maintenance, and information management of the web server. It covers several concepts, including tracing the physical location of an entity, and identifying URL authorities and names.

8. Airline Reservation System

The project is a web-based one featuring open architecture that keeps up with the dynamic needs of the airline business by the addition of new systems & functionality. The project includes online transactions, fares, inventory, and e-ticket operations.

The software consists of four key modules, i.e., user registration, login, reservation, and cancellation. The app allows communication through a TCP/IP network protocol thereby facilitating the usage of internet & intranet communication globally.

9. Online Book Store

This project is mainly developed for bookstores and shops to digitize the book-purchasing process. The aim is to create an efficient and reliable online bookselling platform. It also records sold and stock books automatically in the database.

10. Snake Game in Java

If you are a ’90s kid or an adult you have probably played this game on your phone. The goal of this game is to make the snake eat the tokens without the snake being touched to the boundary on the screen. Every time the snake eats the token the score is updated. The player loses when the snake touches the boundary and the final score is displayed.

  • How To Setup Your Java Environment

Before you start coding in Java, it's essential to have your coding environment properly set up and ready for action.

Being a compiled language that runs on a wide range of devices through the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), Java requires a bit more setup compared to interpreted languages like JavaScript that run directly in web browsers.

Here's how to set up a Java development environment on most operating systems.

Install a Java Development Kit (JDK)

First and foremost, you need the JDK, which includes the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and the compilers and tools needed to compile and run Java applications.

  • Download the JDK: Visit AdoptOpenJDK or Oracle's official Java site to download the JDK. I recommend choosing the LTS (Long-Term Support) version for stability.
  • Install the JDK: Run the installer and follow the instructions. Make sure to set the JAVA_HOME environment variable to the JDK installation path and add the JDK's bin directory to your system's PATH . This is crucial for making Java commands accessible from your command line or terminal.

Verify Installation

After setting up, verify that everything is working correctly.

This should confirm your JDK is correctly set up.

Install a Java IDE or Code Editor

You'll need an IDE or code editor that supports Java syntax highlighting and potentially IntelliSense for code completion.

Eclipse, NetBeans, and IntelliJ IDEA are some of the most popular choices and three of my personal favorites.

That said, I'd also consider Visual Studio Code (VSCode) as this is a hugely popular choice among developers for various languages thanks to its extensive and lightweight feature set and vast library of extensions.

If you do go the VSCode route, head to the VSCode extension marketplace and install the ‘Extension Pack for Java’ from Microsoft, and you’ll be good to go.

Install Git [Optional but Recommended]

If you're really new to coding, you might want to skip this step, but even then, I'd really recommend becoming familiar with Git as soon as you can.

If you want the TL-DR, Git is a version control system that lets you track changes in your code and collaborate with others.

While this step is not strictly necessary for Java development, it's a best practice, especially for larger projects or when working in a team.

Simply download Git from the official Git website , and during installation, you can accept most default settings. That said, you might want to choose your preferred text editor and ensure that Git is added to your system's PATH.

  • If the player guesses the number on the first attempt, the score increases by 5.
