At the heart of all forms of discrimination is prejudice based on concepts of identity, and the need to identify with a certain group. This can lead to division, hatred and even the dehumanization of other people because they have a different identity.

In many parts of the world, the politics of blame and fear is on the rise. Intolerance, hatred and discrimination is causing an ever-widening rift in societies. The politics of fear is driving people apart as leaders peddle toxic rhetoric, blaming certain groups of people for social or economic problems.

Some governments try to reinforce their power and the status quo by openly justifying discrimination in the name of morality, religion or ideology. Discrimination can be cemented in national law, even when it breaks international law – for example, the criminalization of abortion which denies women, girls and pregnant people the health services only they need. Certain groups can even be viewed by the authorities as more likely to be criminal simply for who they are, such as being poor, indigenous or black. 


Racial and ethnic discrimination.

Racism affects virtually every country in the world. It systematically denies people their full human rights just because of their colour, race, ethnicity, descent (including caste) or national origin. Racism unchecked can fuel large-scale atrocities such as the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and more recently, apartheid and ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya people in Myanmar.

In India, members of the Dalit community are targeted, by members of dominant castes, for a range of human rights abuses. These crimes, which include gang rapes, killings and the destruction of their homes, often go uninvestigated by the police because of discriminatory attitudes which do not take crimes against Dalits seriously.

Amnesty International has also documented widespread discrimination faced by millions of Roma in Europe, including the threat of forced evictions, police harassment and the  segregation of Roma children in school.

Discrimination against non-nationals, sometimes known as xenophobia

but discrimination against non-nationals is frequently based on racism or notions of superiority, and is often fuelled by politicians looking for scapegoats for social or economic problems in a country.  

Since 2008,  South Africa  has experienced several outbreaks of violence against refugees, asylum seekers and migrants from other African countries, including killings, and looting or burning of shops and businesses. In some instances, the violence has been inflamed by the hate-filled rhetoric of politicians who have wrongly labelled foreign nationals “criminals” and accused them of burdening the health system.

Discrimination has also been a feature of the response of authorities to refugees and asylum seekers in other parts of the world. Many people in countries receiving refugees and asylum seekers view the situation as a crisis with leaders and politicians exploiting these fears by promising, and in some cases enacting, abusive and unlawful policies.

For example,  Hungary passed a package of punitive laws in 2018 , which target groups that the government has identified as supporting refugees and migrants. The authorities have also subjected refugees and asylum seekers to violent push-backs and ill-treatment and imposed arbitrary detention on those attempting to enter Hungarian territory.

We at Amnesty International disagree that it is a crisis of numbers. This is a  crisis of solidarity . The causes that drive families and individuals to cross borders, and the short-sighted and unrealistic ways that politicians respond to them, are the problem.

Discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people

Everywhere in the world, people face discrimination because of who they love, who they are attracted to and who they are. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people risk being unfairly treated in all areas of their lives, whether it’s in education, employment, housing or access to health care, and they may face harassment and violence.

Some countries punish people for their sexual orientation or their gender identity with jail or even death. For example, in October 2019, Uganda’s Ethics and Integrity Minister announced that the government was planning to introduce the  death penalty  for consensual same-sex sexual acts.

In 2019, Amnesty International documented how gay and trans soldiers in  South Korea  face violence, harassment and pervasive discrimination due to the criminalization of consensual sex between men in the military; and examined the barriers to accessing gender-affirming treatments for transgender individuals in  China . We also campaigned to allow Pride events to take place in countries such as Turkey, Lebanon and Ukraine.

It is extremely difficult, and in most cases, impossible for LGBTI people to live their lives freely and seek justice for abuses when the laws are not on their side. Even when they are, there is strong stigma and stereotyping of LGBTI identities that prevents them from living their lives as equal members of society or accessing rights and freedoms that are available to others. That’s why LGBTI activists campaign relentlessly for their rights: whether it’s to be free from discrimination to love who they want, have  their gender legally recognized  or to just be protected from the risk of assault and harassment.

Gender discrimination.

In many countries, in all regions of the world, laws, policies, customs and beliefs exist that deny women and girls their rights.

By law, women cannot dress as they like (Saudi Arabia, Iran) or work at night (Madagascar) or take out a loan without their husband’s signature (Equatorial Guinea). In many countries, discriminatory laws place limits on a woman’s right to divorce, own property, exercise control over her own body and enjoy protection from harassment.  

In the ongoing battle for justice, hundreds of thousands of women and girls take to the streets to claim their human rights and demand gender equality. In the USA, Europe and Japan, women protested against misogyny and abuse as part of the #MeToo marches. In Argentina, Ireland and Poland, women demonstrated to demand a stop to oppressive abortion laws. In Saudi Arabia, they called for an end to the driving ban, and in Iran, they demanded an end to forced  hijab  (veiling).

All over the world, women and girls have been at the forefront of demands for change.  

Yet despite the stratospheric rise of women’s activism, the stark reality remains that many governments around the world openly support policies, laws and customs that subjugate and suppress women.

Globally, 40% of women of childbearing age live in countries where abortion remains highly restricted or inaccessible in practice even when allowed by law, and some 225 million do not have access to modern contraception.

Research by Amnesty International confirmed that while social media platforms allow people to express themselves by debating, networking and  sharing  , companies and governments have failed to protect users from online abuse, prompting many  women  in particular to self-censor or leave platforms altogether.

However, social media has given more prominence in some parts of the world to women’s calls for equality in the workplace, an issue highlighted in the calls to narrow the gender pay gap, currently standing at 23% globally. Women worldwide are not only paid less, on average, than men, but are more likely to do unpaid work and to work in informal, insecure and unskilled jobs. Much of this is due to social norms that consider women and their work to be of lower status.

Case study: Menstruation and the taboos around it

“That time of the month”, “Aunt Flo”, “crimson wave”. In many parts of the world, the stigma around menstruation goes far beyond euphemisms. Trying to change attitudes has resulted in some activists being arrested or interrogated for taking a stand.

Samikshya Koirala, from Nepal, got her period for the first time at the age of 11. Not only was she banished from home for five days, but she was also forbidden from touching male members of her family for 11 days and was not allowed to enter the kitchen for 19 days.

She’s now part of an Amnesty International student group, which aims to reverse negative attitudes around menstruation.

“We’re making videos, hosting rallies and running community programmes in rural areas for boys and girls. When we hear kids talking about these issues openly, it’s a proud moment for us. In Nepal, we need to start changing mindsets around the superstitions surrounding menstruation – and I think we’re doing a great job so far,” Samikshya said.

Discrimination based on caste

Discrimination based on work and descent (also referred as caste discrimination) is widespread across Asia and Africa, affecting over 260 million people, including those in the diaspora. Owing to their birth identity, people from these communities are socially excluded, economically deprived and subjected to physical and psychological abuse. Discrimination based on work and descent is deeply rooted in society, it manifests itself in everyday lives, in individual perceptions to culture and customs, in social and economic structures, in education and employment, and in access to services, opportunities, resources and the market. Discrimination is perpetuated from generation to generation, and is in some cases deeply internalized, despite the existence in some countries of laws and affirmative action to tackle it. Amnesty International is committed to work in tandem with partners in advocating for the rights of communities affected on the basis of work and descent.  

Discrimination based on disability

As many as 1 in 10 people around the world lives with a disability. Yet in many societies, people with disabilities must grapple with stigma, being ostracized and treated as objects of pity or fear.

Developing countries are home to about 80% of people with disabilities. The overwhelming majority of people with disabilities – 82%– live below the poverty line. Women with disabilities are two to three times more likely to encounter physical and sexual abuse than women without disabilities.

In  Kazakhstan , current laws mean that thousands of people with psychosocial and intellectual disabilities have been declared “incapable” by law and put in the care of a guardian. Under this system they cannot exercise their rights and are not able to challenge the decision in court.

Amnesty International has also documented serious human rights abuses suffered by people with disabilities in  Somalia , where they are at risk of forced marriage, rape and forced evictions.

Case study: Fighting to improve accessibility in Kyrgyzstan

In Kyrgyzstan where persons with disabilities are often labelled as “invalids” and “diseased”,  Gulzar keeps on fighting for her dignity.

Gulzar Duishenova is a Kyrgyzstani woman who lost the use of her legs in a traffic accident. She now uses a wheelchair, but lives in a society where persons with disabilities face daily discrimination. One of these forms of discrimination is accessibility; from going to the doctor, to getting on public transport.

But Gulzar is fighting to change this. She has made it her life’s mission to ensure that persons with disabilities can live in dignity. The accessibility issues she faces have only strengthened her resolve to demand a better life for herself and others.

After years of campaigning by activists like Gulzar, in March 2019 Kyrgyzstani President Sooronbay Jeenbekov  signed into law the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities  which paves the road to the effective inclusion of 180,000 people living with disabilities in the social and economic life of Kyrgyzstan. 

“If people with disabilities and older people live well, the whole of society lives well. I also want to say it loud and clear that nothing about us should be done without us,” says Gulzar.

During thousands years, every civilization on the planet had elements of discrimination. Obviously, modern society is no exception. Every time when European colonizers occupied somebody’s land, it led to formation of isolated social groups and peoples. Most extreme types of discrimination often developed into such horrible things as a genocide or slavery. In some countries, discrimination wasn’t enacted at the legislative level, while in other countries discrimination was legislated. This phenomenon was called Apartheid. Along with these extreme forms of discrimination, human civilization also invented other, relatively soft forms, which are often reflected in immigration laws, as well as in disenfranchisement. Often we can observe discrimination in hospitals and schools; discrimination is often presented in media and public opinions. Some ethnic groups suffer from discrimination more often, throughout the whole world’s history. Such groups are the Jews, and the Roma (also known as Gypsies).

The meaning of discrimination is often related to another term, which is “disturbing”. In the Oxford Dictionary, such a term is explained as anxiety, and distress, as well as other bad mental states caused by unfairness and irritation. Therefore, such a state is often caused by various types of discrimination, since it is nothing but an unfair treatment of somebody who belongs to a particular race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and so on. Usually the reason for such an unfair treatment is prejudice. Most people who suffer from discrimination feel frustration, and anger. It may often cause anger addressed to people who caused such an unpleasant emotional state. However, there are many consequences of discrimination for both victims and victimizers, so in this essay, we decided to consider common effects of discrimination.

First of all, discrimination is not a new problem. Almost all human societies throughout world’s history suffered from different forms of discrimination. Usually people don’t try to understand whether or not this representation is true. In turn, stereotypes form prejudice. Prejudice is our judgment of a person based on stereotypes about his or her race, gender, and so on. Generally, these two things form a strong basis for discrimination. The only particular feature of discrimination is that it also includes unfair treatment. Within discrimination, people support certain actions against victims of prejudices and stereotypes. Generally, attitude forms a certain type of prejudice, and actions form discrimination.

Indirect discrimination includes such situations, where neutral positions or actions cause effects of discrimination. Along with these two major types of discrimination, we must mention institutional discrimination, which involves discriminatory practices, laws, and procedures within a certain company, social institution, or even country. Here we are talking about procedures that cause discriminatory consequences. A striking example of institutional discrimination is the South African Apartheid.

Discrimination rarely causes a certain single effect. Usually effects of discrimination multiply and each effect leads to several new consequences. Discrimination is often related to such thing as social distance. It’s always easier for people to judge those who are not related to their social group. The more far some group of people stands from the majority, the easier for the majority is to discriminate them.

Talking about causes of discrimination, we must highlight one thing that often forms discriminatory behavior among adults. Discrimination can be learned. Most people who support discrimination were raised by parents who support the same ideas. Teachers also may form discriminatory behavior of their students. Such effects often become stronger due to political and economic discrimination. Inequality, ignorance and prejudices cause a lot of negative effects on many levels. Not only affects discrimination peace within a particular country, but also a world peace as well. This is a reason why many international organizations provide new instruments and laws, in order to stop discrimination worldwide. However, despite the fact that such organizations introduce new incentives, these incentives rarely are something more than just papers and agreements. The Black Lives Matter movement has likely caused you to think more about racism and is probably making you question some of your own beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors.

A little self-reflection might reveal some uncomfortable truths—such as ways in which you might be having racist thoughts or exhibiting racist behaviors without even realizing it. This self-reflection may also come with feelings of guilt and shame, so it is also important to start with forgiveness.

Modern-day racism exists because of the current circumstances that we were all born into. While we did not have a hand in designing things the way they are but we do have a hand in helping rectify the situation.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to embark on an anti-racism journey. Raising your own awareness of any biases and stereotypes can be key to breaking down barriers.

1.  Acknowledge Modern Day Racism Exists

Although some people assume that anti-discrimination laws have eliminated racism from society, studies show that this isn’t the case.

Ethnic minorities still experience a great deal of prejudice and discrimination. Studies have found that minorities are:

  • less likely to receive adequate care from physicians.
  • less likely to receive employment offers.
  • judged more harshly for crimes they commit.
  • more likely to be shot by police officers.
  • treated with more suspicion in public places.

These are just a few examples. Clearly, many individuals experience racism on a daily basis in many different ways.

So it’s important to acknowledge that minorities are still facing ongoing discrimination. Recognizing that racism exists is the first step toward creating positive change.

Listen to the experiences of other people. When you hear other people's situations and stories, be willing to listen with an open mind.

2. Recognize Your Prejudice

If you think things like, “I’d never do anything racist,” you might want to check yourself. Research shows people who claim they’re never prejudiced are the most likely to be prejudiced.

A 2019 study published in Personality and Individual Differences found that “the least egalitarian individuals tended to be those who overestimated their levels of egalitarianism the most.”    

Participants were asked to report how egalitarian they believed they were compared with other people in regard to race. Then, they stated how favorable they felt about Black people in the workplace. Finally, participants completed the Implicit Association Test to measure their implicit biases related to race.

Researchers found that those who reported being the most egalitarian displayed the most implicit bias toward Black people.

Other studies have uncovered similar results. People in privileged groups are more likely to deny the existence of bias.   And among young people, there’s an impression that racism is “not that bad anymore” or that it only occurs in extreme circumstances.  

Some even believe that prejudice against white people is a more serious cause for concern than prejudice against Black people.  

Keep in mind that no one is completely prejudiced or not prejudiced at all. It’s a continuum, and everyone possesses stereotypes and biases to some degree that affect how they interact with individuals from other races.

It is important to remember that our brains are wired to recognize differences, which evolved to protect against the general threats of the world. The biases we have are still running on this same internal system.

3.  Take a Test to Identify Your Biases

Project Implicit is a non-profit organization that helps people identify hidden biases. They offer a free test that can help you discover thoughts and feelings about people of other races that you might not be conscious of.

After all, on the surface, you may think you’re accepting of people from all races. But the truth is you likely have some stereotypes and biases that you might not even recognize.

Take this free test , and discover a bit more about your hidden biases.

Taking this type of test can be helpful, but it is also important to stay alert in order to identify and challenge biases that you may have. Being mindful of other people's responses to your interactions can also be helpful as well. For example, if someone seems offended by something you said or did, inquire about that further.

4. Learn About Yourself

You might think your anti-racism journey should start with learning about others. But developing more self-awareness first can be key to helping you gain insight into your beliefs.

A 2009 study published in the International Journal of Cultural Relations found that individuals can become more culturally competent by exploring their own historical roots and values.  

Developing a better understanding of your ancestors and their experiences, and thinking about how your family functions as a group, can help you see the ways these have impacted you. It can make you more aware of your own biases while sparking curiosity about other cultures and races.

In her book The Body is Not an Apology , Sonya Renee Taylor promotes the concept of radical self-love, which involves loving your body and your whole authentic self. She believes that part of the root of biases we have stems from personal shortcomings. By learning to accept ourselves more authentically, we can then improve as a society.

Another way of learning about yourself is to consider enrolling in individual therapy to explore the issue of bias and racism.

5.  Learn About Other People

Educate yourself about other races as well. Learn about the history of racism and discrimination, and strive to learn more about what other people are experiencing today.

Read books, watch movies, and review articles that describe other people’s experiences.

You don’t have to stick to just scientific journals and documentaries. You may find many fiction books give insight into unfamiliar backgrounds too.

Get your news from a variety of sources. Watching the same channel and reading articles from the same website only gives you one view. Learn from many different people, and you’ll see there are many ways to tell the same story.

6. Interact With People of Different Races

There’s no substitute for first-hand experience. Talking to people who are different from you, working with people of other races, and interacting with them in all sorts of circumstances can help you gain the most insight.

You’ll learn a lot when you listen to people . But don’t ask them to educate you on racism. Asking them to do more work—or essentially try to explain their daily experiences—places more burden on them.

You also may need to purposely get involved in new activities so you can interact with people outside your usual social circle. Volunteer, join a club, or attend an event you might not normally attend so you can interact with different people.

Another thing you can do is to visit different parts of the United States as well as other countries, when permissible. Many organizations also organize and host cultural events and festivals, which is something else you might want to consider.

 7.  Enroll in a Course

Whether you sign up for an online course, or you attend a college class, diversity education can help reduce your bias.

A 2001 study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that students who were enrolled in a prejudice and conflict seminar showed significantly reduced implicit and explicit anti-Black biases compared with the control group.  

This study shows that biases can be changed—even the ones that seem automatic. Learning about your stereotypes can significantly reduce your levels of prejudice. A more recent 2012 study also supports these findings, suggesting that anti-prejudice training and intervention could lead to significant long-term reductions in implicit race bias.  

Some resources that can help reduce racial bias:

  • Look around for online courses, or contact your local college to see if they offer diversity classes.
  • There has also been a recent explosion in content designed to educate and inform people about racial issues.
  • There are a number of free programs and webinars available online to the public. 
  • There are also a number of independent scholars that have courses available.
  • Local libraries also often have book clubs and programs designed to promote diversity and racial understanding.

Ideally, you would take a comprehensive approach rather than just selecting one or two of these offerings. Challenging and actively fighting bias is a psychologically intense and long-term dedication, so the more resources you have to support your efforts, the better.
