The field of Writing Studies has evolved over the past fifty years. As a fully-fledged discipline for pedagogy, research, and practice, the importance of Writing Studies has been recognized by the University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences as an essential component of teaching, learning, and scholarly inquiry.  The new Department of Writing Studies, established in 2022, is the College’s 21st department.

Writing Studies offers courses in support of UM’s General Education Requirements for written communication skills, as well as a variety of discipline-specific courses.  The Department houses the university's three Writing Centers: at the Richter Library Learning Commons, Coral Gables; at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science; and at the Miller School of Medicine (appointments offered online and in-person).  Through its various specialized programs and initiatives, the Department contributes to the improvement of writing skills for all UM students and faculty.

The Department is housed in the Ferre Building, 1000 Memorial Drive (adjacent to the Foote Green and next to Merrick fountain).

How to Get Into the University of Miami: Acceptance Rate and Strategies

The University of Miami received nearly 50,000 applications for a spot in their 2024-25 freshman class, nearly double the amount received just a decade ago. With high-quality academics, a thriving sports and Greek scene, and an enticing location near South Beach and the Florida Keys, it’s not hard to see why students from around the globe are lining up for a chance to become a Hurricane. It’s no wonder the University of Miami acceptance rate has fallen below 20%.

With selectivity at an all-time high, today’s applicants need to bring a lot more to the table than those who were accepted into UMiami a generation ago. The intent of this article is to give those considering applying to the University of Miami a complete understanding of the following topics:

University of Miami’s Overall Acceptance Rate – Class of 2028

In creating the Class of 2028, UMiami admitted 19% of the 48,141 students who applied in the 2023-24 admissions cycle.

University of Miami Early Decision Acceptance Rate – Class of 2027

Those who are serious about attending UMiami should definitely consider applying via binding early decision . This school offers two rounds of early decision—ED I in November and ED II in January. While official Class of 2028 ED statistics have yet to be released, the Class of 2027 ED acceptance rate was 60% compared to just 19% for those who applied in the regular cycle.

What GPA do you need to get into UMiami?

Among enrolled 2023-2024 first-year students, the average GPA was 3.8. Moreover, 65% of enrolled students had a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

What class rank do you need to get accepted to UMiami?

Among enrolled 2023-24 first-year students, an impressive 64% hailed from the top 10%, while 87% earned a place in the top 20%.

What is the minimum SAT or ACT score for UMiami?

According to statistics for the Class of 2027, the mid-50% SAT range for enrolled freshmen was 1340-1450, and mid-50% ACT range was 30-33.

Admissions Trends & Notes

• The number of applications received and acceptance rate has held steady for the past three years.
• 60% of first-year Class of 2027 students spoke two or more languages.
• Those who apply early action also receive a significant boost to their admissions prospects, but not as high as ED.
• 29% of the incoming class hailed from Florida; 64% were non-Florida residents and 7% were international.
• 44% of the Class of 2027 identified as students of color.

Who Gets Into the University Of Miami?

Let’s look at the demographics of The University of Miami undergraduates:

29% of the incoming freshman class hailed from the state of Florida. Historically, the next five most common states of residence are:

• Massachusetts
• Pennsylvania

As at any highly selective university, competition is toughest among those hailing from states with endless streams of qualified applicants (the entire Northeast & the West Coast). If you hail from a less populated state like Hawaii, the Dakotas, or Montana, your location is more likely to provide a boost to your admissions chances.

Looking at ethnic identity, the breakdown of the Class of 2027 was as follows:

• Asian American: 5%
• Hispanic/Latino: 20%
• Black or African American: 8%
• Two or more races: 5%

The breakdown of the Class of 2027 is notably split in favor of women:

• Female: 53%

UMiami’s yield rate—the percentage of accepted students who elect to enroll, divided by the total number of students who are admitted—was 26%, up nearly ten points from last year. This is now comparable to other schools like Boston University (24%), Villanova (26%), and the University of Richmond (24%).

How the University of Miami Rates Applicants

There are seven factors that the University of Miami ranks as being “very important” to their admissions process: rigor of secondary school record, class rank, GPA, standardized test scores, the essays, and extracurricular activities. The factors rated as “important” are: talent/ability, character/personal qualities, volunteer work, and work experience.

The admissions process at the University of Miami is a holistic one. In the admissions office’s own words:

“We consider the circumstances and/or educational opportunities that were available to  you . Did your grades dip the year after you had to move across the country? We get it because we read your application in a holistic way. Are concerned the two AP classes you took won’t be enough to be competitive for admission? Well, we know that your school only offers three, so taking two out of three is an extremely demanding curriculum! Are your SAT scores not meeting our published average? Doesn’t matter, because we know that first-generation college students may have limited resources… Were you the captain of your volleyball team in your sophomore year, then moved to a high school with a premier, state championship-winning volleyball team where you didn’t see as much playing time? Hey, as long as you’re a good teammate!”

On the subject of teammates, it definitely also helps if you are recruited as an athlete to join one of the Hurricanes’ 15 Division I sports teams; there are just under 400 varsity athletes at the university.

Tips for Applying to the University of Miami

If you plan on joining the 49,000+ UMiami hopefuls for the next admissions cycle, you should know the following:

• The University of Miami will be continue to be test-optional for the 2024-25 cycle.
• The University of Miami does not consider interviews in the admissions so it is imperative that your personality stands out on your Common App and supplemental essay as well as through your teacher/counselor recommendations.
• The University of Miami weighs “ demonstrated interest ” as “considered” in the admissions process. Therefore, you will be judged on whether or not you made a campus visit, contacted an admissions officer, etc.
• Make sure to dedicate sufficient time and effort to the supplemental essay(s) required by UMiami. In the 2024-25 cycle, there is one prompt that every applicant must answer:

Miami Medical School Secondary Application Tip #1: Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami values the following in its study body: 1) ample clinical experience, 2) research, and 3) past experiences and future commitment to improving the health of diverse cultures.

As much as possible on the University of Miami secondary application, highlight your clinical experiences and research work. Show your direct impact on patients. For example, if you are part of an undergraduate journal student organization, you can talk about what you learned about research and how you applied it to your research projects during undergrad. Additionally, in the COVID-19 question, leadership essay, or community service work, you can highlight patient stories.

If you are still a premedical student not yet applying to medical school, make sure to write down all your volunteer and community service work using our AMCAS workbook . Set on a lake in the center of Coral Gables, Florida, seven miles from downtown Miami, University of Miami is a private research university with a total student population of around 17,000. The University comprises 12 undergraduate and graduate schools and colleges, including its College of Arts and Science, College of Engineering, School of Architecture and 6 other pre-professional schools. How Hard Is It to Get Into University of Miami?

For the 2019–2020 admissions cycle, University of Miami received 40,131 applicants, of which 13,280 were accepted. This means that last year, UMiami acceptance rate was 33% , making it a moderately selective school. That same year, UMiami received 1,357 early decision applicants, of which 830 were accepted, which yields a 61% acceptance rate for early decision. UMiami also has a non-binding early action option .

The average high school GPA of UMiami’s Class of 2024 was 3.6. 13% had a GPA of 4.0 . 25% had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99 , and a similar 24% had a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74.  

Of the 36% of Colgate’s class of 2024 who submitted class rank, 51% graduated in the top 10% of their high school class, and 78% graduated in the top 25%. 95% graduated in the top half. 

While standardized test scores are normally required for applicants, University of Miami is test-optional for students applying for the Spring or Fall 2022 semesters. Of the students who enrolled in Fall 2020, the top 25% of students scored above a 1400 on the SAT , and above a 32 on the ACT.

How to Improve Your Chances of Getting into University of Miami 

1. achieve at least a 3.6 gpa while taking the most challenging classes available.

As the average GPA of enrolled Colgate students last year was a 3.6, in order to be a competitive candidate, you should aim for at least a 3.6 GPA. In addition, Colgate wants to see that you’ve challenged yourself, so you should try and take advanced honors, AP, or IB classes.

Selective schools like Washington and Lee receive a massive number of applications and use a tool known as the Academic Index to sort through them. Academic Index consolidates your entire academic performance into a single number which is used to see if you meet a school’s academic standards. If you fail to meet a college’s Academic Index threshold, you risk not having your application read. 

If your GPA is lower, and you’re still a freshman or sophomore in your high school, check out our tips for increasing your GPA . If you’re a junior or senior, it will be harder to increase your GPA, so the easiest way to increase your Academic Index is to get a higher test score.

2. Report your SAT scores if above 1400, and ACT if above 32

While standardized test scores are optional for students applying for Fall 2022 enrollment, University of Miami will still consider your test scores if you submit them. For next year, students who does not submit test scores will not be at a disadvantage from those who do. That being said, a high standardized test score is a valuable way to display your academic aptitude in addition to your transcript. If you do take the SAT or ACT and score in the 75th percentile of UMiami students, which is a 1400 on the SAT or a 32 on the ACT, reporting your scores will likely give you a boost.

3. Write engaging essays and supplement responses

In addition to the Common Application personal essay, University of Miami will require you to write a 250-word response to the UMiami supplemental essay prompt. With UMiami’s focus on a student’s character and personal qualities, as well as real-world applications of skills, the essay is the perfect place for applicants to show his or her strengths , character, authentic voice, and written eloquence.

4. Highlight any work or volunteer experience

The school values putting theory into practice, and wants students who have a stake in how they choose to spend their time. Underlining your work or volunteer experience will show UMiami that you have engaged with the real world and that you are invested in putting your skills to practice.

5. Apply Early Decision

University of Miami’s early decision acceptance rate is 61% , while the regular decision acceptance rate is 33% . A student has almost a two-fold increase in chances of acceptance when they apply early decision to UMiami, even after accounting for profile strength. If you have your heart set on UMiami, applying ED can be a great way to show your commitment. However, keep in mind the drawbacks to applying early decision. You’ll have less time to refine your application, fewer financial aid packages options, and there’s the obvious inability to try your hand at other colleges if you do get into your ED school.

Miami Is Entering a State of Unreality

No amount of adaptation to climate change can fix Miami’s water problems.

Floodwaters as high as the hood of Perez’s gray Toyota Yaris stalled the car; he pulled onto the median and called for roadside assistance, but it never came. Thousands of other commuters found themselves in similar straits: About a foot and a half of water had fallen across South Florida—the product not of a hurricane or a tropical storm but of a rainstorm, dubbed Invest 90L, a deluge that meteorologists are calling a once-in-200-years event. It was the fourth such massive rainfall to smite southeastern Florida in as many years.

“Rain bombs” such as Invest 90L are products of our hotter world; warmer air has more room between its molecules for moisture. That water is coming for greater Miami and the 6 million people who live here. This glittering city was built on a drained swamp and sits atop porous limestone; as the sea keeps rising, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts that South Florida could see almost 11 extra inches of ocean by 2040. Sunny-day flooding, when high tides gurgle up and soak low-lying ground, has increased 400 percent since 1998, with a significant increase after 2006; a major hurricane strike with a significant storm surge could displace up to 1 million people . And with every passing year, the region’s infrastructure seems more ill-equipped to deal with these dangers, despite billions of dollars spent on adaptation.

Thirty years ago, when the dangers of climate change were beginning to be understood but had not yet arrived in force, the creeping catastrophe facing Miami might have been averted. But as atmospheric concentrations of carbon reach levels not seen in 3 million years, politicians promise resilience while ignoring emissions; developers race to build a bounty of luxury condos , never mind the swiftly rising sea. Florida is entering a subtropical state of unreality in which these decisions don’t add up.

A massive network of canals keeps this region from reverting to a swamp, and sea-level rise is making operating them more challenging. The biggest canals, run by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), offer primary drainage; smaller canals are operated by municipalities and private entities. The majority of these canals drain to the sea during low tides using gravity. But sea-level rise erodes the system’s capacity to drain water—so much so that SFWMD has already identified several main canals that need to be augmented with pumps. The scary part about last week’s flood is that it didn’t happen during particularly high tides: Less rain, or rain that fell at a gentler rate, would have drained away easily. Other adaptation initiatives are under way. Miami is overhauling how it deals with stormwater , and has installed pumps and backflow valves in vulnerable and low-lying neighborhoods. Miami Beach has spent about a decade raising roads, installing pumps, and improving its infrastructure in a multimillion-dollar effort to buy time.

But the amount of rain that did fall last week is the sort of extreme-weather event that infrastructure planners don’t design for, if only because it would be too expensive to construct stormwater systems capable of moving that much water that quickly. “Nowhere can withstand this much rain,” Bryan McNoldy, a senior researcher at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, told me. At his home in Biscayne Park, he slept uneasily on Wednesday night after nine inches of rain fell in just 11 hours. “That’s definitely more than what my area can ingest,” he said on Friday. Just a few more inches of rain would have meant water coming up through his floorboards.

The state government isn’t exactly ignoring the rising water. Governor Ron DeSantis and his administration have attempted to address the havoc caused by the changing climate with his $1.8 billion Resilient Florida Program, an initiative to help communities adapt to sea-level rise and more intense flooding. But the governor has also signed a bill into law that would make the term climate change largely verboten in state statutes. That same bill effectively boosted the use of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, in Florida by reducing regulations on gas pipelines and increasing protections on gas stoves. In a post on X the day he signed the bill, DeSantis called this “ restoring sanity in our approach to energy and rejecting the agenda of the radical green zealots.”

Climate researchers , for their part, refer to this strategy as “agnostic adaptation”—attempting to deal with the negative effects of climate change while advancing policies that silence discussion or ignore climate change’s causes. On Friday, at a press conference in Hollywood, Florida—which received more than 20 inches of rain—DeSantis repeated his message, emphasizing that “we don’t want our climate policy driven by climate ideology.” The Earth’s carbon cycle—which has not witnessed such a rapid increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide in the past 50,000 years—is without ideology. The carbon goes into the atmosphere, and everything that follows follows. In Miami, as the water levels rise, researchers predict that low-lying neighborhoods across the region will lose population. Eventually, Florida’s policies of agnostic adaptation will have to deal with this looming reality, where adaptation is clearly impossible, and retreat is the only option left.

Photo School Started by WWII Navy Combat Photog Continues to Produce Champions

“He inspired thousands of young photojournalists including me,” posted Amy Sancetta , who won a 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography along with The Associated Press team that covered the 1992 presidential election. “He was a champion, and yet when I began, he championed me.”

Scott was born 100 years ago this August; Ohio University plans a back-to-school tribute showcasing his award-winning work, equipment, and achievements.

“The legacy has grown,” said Terry Eiler , professor emeritus at Ohio University who co-founded its visual-communications program with Scott, his father-in-law.

“The ability to share knowledge and develop talent is a powerful gift,” said Eiler. “Just as impressive is starting something that keeps going after you’re gone.”

Forty-six visual journalists from Ohio University have won Pulitzer Prizes, says Tim Goheen, director of Ohio U’s School of Visual Communication.

Marcus Yam of the Los Angeles Times won a 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for “raw and urgent images of the U.S. departure from Afghanistan.” Born in Malaysia in 1984, Yam earned a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Buffalo in 2006. When he switched to photography, Yam enrolled in a “boot camp” program at Ohio University.

Hands-on Experience

As an uber-teacher and mentor, Scott was an evangelist for experience.

Yam recalls a year of hands-on transformative photo work at Ohio University that gave him “permission to embrace the unknown.” As a student, he immersed himself in the unincorporated hamlet of Shade, Ohio to compile a photo essay.

“That experience in Shade set the foundation for my career,” Yam said. “I had a sense of being unleashed. It gave me the confidence to go anywhere.”

Getty Images also won a 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for coverage of the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Drew Angerer , who graduated from Ohio University in 2011, was on the Pulitzer-winning team at Getty . In Louisville, award-winning Ohio U alumnus Dan Dry has photographed the Kentucky Derby 46 times.

“Chuck Scott,” said Dry, “made such an impact on my life.”

Shortly after he graduated from Ohio University last year, photographer Ryan Grzybowski was contacted by a producer in Los Angeles who was making a film about the first Ukrainian athlete signed by WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment).

The producer wanted to use photos of Olena Sadovska taken by Grzybowski in 2021 at a high school swim meet in Ohio. His photos were included in the film that aired this year on Roku.

Yes, Grzybowski was compensated for the use.

“That’s definitely a life lesson from Chuck Scott,” said Eiler. “Respect photo rights!”

University of Miami Verbal Commit Breaks Leg In Scrimmage; Out for the 2024 Season

The 2024 high school season is officially over for Miami Central 4-star safety Amari Wallace.

It's over before it started.

Wallace participated, with the rest of his Central teammates, in a possible non-sanctioned scrimmage with another high school on Wednesday. He suffered a compound fracture to one of his legs according to a report filed by High School on SI.

He was supposed to be an early enrollee at the University of Miami and was already slated by recruiting experts to compete for one of the two starting safety positions. Now, his status for the 2025 season is unknown. According to the report, the average recovery time for a compound fracture of the leg could be as much as 15 months.

Wallace might have to take a medical redshirt his freshman season.

The situation surrounding the injury has been called into question.

High school football practice is not supposed to start in Florida until July 29. Full-contact practices are not slated to begin until Aug. 3.

Scrimmages between schools must be sanctioned by the Florida High School Athletic Association. It has not been determined if this scrimmage was sanctioned by the FHSAA.

High School on SI reached out to the principal and the coach of Miami Central, to determine the facts and circumstances of this incident. Neither party has responded.

Wallace is a recent Miami commit and selected the Hurricanes over Auburn, Louisville and Louisiana State. All verbal commitments are non-binding. Wallace was going to sign with the Hurricanes during Early National Signing Day in December.

Wallace had three interceptions as well as six passes defended and one caused fumble last season. In 2022 he helped Miami Central win the Florida 2M state championship.

The University cannot issue a statement on a player who is not yet signed to a National Letter of Intent. Miami Hurricanes On SI will monitor the situation and report the facts as they come to light.

Looking From Space, Researchers Find Pollution Spiking Near E-Commerce Hubs

Research showed truck-related releases of nitrogen dioxide, which can cause asthma, concentrated around some 150,000 warehouses nationwide.

They are mammoth warehouses large enough to fit football fields inside them, handling many of the more than 20 billion packages Americans send and receive each year.

But for people who live around them, the round-the-clock semitrailer traffic at these giant hubs significantly worsens air pollution, according to a new NASA-funded study that tracked pollutants from space.

The research, led by scientists at George Washington University, is the first of its kind; it used satellite technology to measure a harmful traffic-related pollutant called nitrogen dioxide, zooming in on nearly 150,000 large warehouses across the United States. They found that nitrogen dioxide, which can lead to asthma and other health problems, jumped 20 percent on average near the warehouses. At the busiest facilities the increase was higher.

“The average warehouse built since about 2010 looks a lot different than the warehouses that were built prior to that, with lot more loading docks, a lot more parking spaces,” said Gaige Kerr, the lead author of the study and an assistant research professor of environmental and occupational health at the Milken Institute School of Public Health of George Washington University.

“They’re also increasingly being built in dense clusters next to other warehouses, and attract a lot more traffic, specially heavy-duty vehicles. And that’s very bad when it comes to pollution.”

The research underscores how logistics hubs have fast become a significant contributor to pollution as American heavy industry, a traditional source of pollution, has receded over the past decades and as the power sector has cleaned up its power plants.
