About the Driver Theory Test

In order to obtain a full Irish driving licence, you must first take and pass the driver theory test. The driver theory test in Ireland is a computer-based assessment that assesses your knowledge of all aspects of motoring. It is based on current road traffic legislation and the Rules of the Road – the official road user guide which forms the basis of road safety in Ireland. This can be downloaded here:

  • Rules of the Road (pdf)
  • Rules of the Road (Irish version; pdf)

The questions that you will come across are knowledge-based and will be randomly chosen from a bank of almost 800 questions from five categories. These categories are:

  • Control of vehicle
  • Legal matters/rules of the road
  • Managing risk
  • Safe and responsible driving
  • Technical matters

How the Driver Theory Test Works

The driver theory test is taken on a computer, using a touch screen or a mouse and keyboard. You don’t need to be highly proficient at using computers to take the test. Prior to the start of the test, you will be shown a short tutorial that will provide you with instructions on how the test works. In order to familiarise yourself with the test, you will be given the option to answer two practice questions. If you have any questions or concerns at this point, staff will be on hand to help.

The test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 45 minutes. Each question has four possible answers. Only one of these answers is correct. There is a square box next to each option. You need to tick the one which you think is the correct answer. If you change your mind about an answer, you may choose another one. If you’re unsure about a question, you may skip it and return to it at a later stage. Before finishing the test, you can review your answers and change any you’re unsure about. If you have answered all the questions to the best of your ability with time to spare, you can end the test and leave early.

In order to pass the test, you need to score 35 out of 40.

Watch the following about what to expect at the test centre on the day of your test:

YouTube video

There are five steps of the driver theory test process:

You should plan to arrive at the centre 15 minutes before your test appointment time. You will be welcomed by members of staff and your appointment time will be confirmed. Please note, if you arrive late for your driver theory test, you won’t be allowed to sit the exam and you will lose your test fee. Please also bear in mind that you won’t be allowed to bring anybody to accompany you at the test centre. If you bring someone with you, they will have to wait outside.

Identification

Remember to bring the correct form of identification with you. Any one of the following forms of identification will suffice:

  • Public Services Card (PSC)
  • Passport (Irish passports and other passports valid for international use only)
  • Irish Passport Cards
  • National Identity Card from EU/EEA Member States or Switzerland

If you do not present any valid forms of identification at the test centre, you won’t be permitted to sit the exam and you’ll lose your fee.

You will then be checked in and asked to provide the required proof of your identity. You cannot take personal belonging into the test room so staff will give you a key for a secure locker.

Verification

When it’s time to take your test, you will be introduced to the Test Centre Administrator (TCA). You will be asked to provide your signature once more and have your photograph taken.

Once your test details are confirmed, the Test Centre Administrator will show you to your workstation and explain how the computer equipment works. You will then start the test. There will be a short tutorial that you may use to become familiar with how the test works. If at any time you need assistance or have a problem, raise your hand and the administrator will assist you.

Soon after finishing the test, the administrator will hand you a score report.

Test Results

You will receive your test result shortly after finishing the driver theory test at the test centre. You will be given a score report with your results. This report will list the five categories of questions and tell you how well you did in each of them.

If you pass, you will be presented with a pass certificate. You will now be able to apply for your Learner Permit. This can be done on the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) website. You will need your Public Services Card and verified MyGovID to proceed with your online application. You can then start learning how to drive on Irish roads.

Your certificate will be valid for two years from the date you pass your driver theory test. If you don’t apply for your Learner Permit within this time period, you will have to pay for and retake the test.

Lost theory test certificate

If you lose your driver theory test certificate, you can request a replacement by calling the Candidate Service Team on 1890 606 106 (Lo-call rate). They are available Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM (excluding public holidays). You will need to provide your name, address, date of birth and test confirmation number. You will find the test confirmation number in the letter or e-mail you received after you booked your test. You will be charged a non-refundable fee of €15 for a replacement certificate. Payment can be made by Mastercard or Visa Credit/Debit Cards.

If you fail, the report will list the categories where improvement is required. You should go away and practice these topics before applying to take another driver theory test. You will need to wait 3 working days before you can sit another theory test. For example, if you sat the test on Monday, the soonest you could take another test would be Friday.

There is no limit to how many times you can take the test.

Appealing a result

If you’re unhappy with the outcome of your results, you have the right to appeal. You can do so by:

  • Speaking to the driver theory test supervisor and completing an appeal form at the test centre before you leave; or
  • Contacting the Candidate Service Team on 1890 606 106 (Lo-call rate) who will ask you to complete and return an appeal form via email. The Candidate Service Team are available Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM (excluding public holidays).

You have a maximum of 10 working days from the date of your test to appeal the result. After your request is received, your test will be re-marked. You will receive the results of this within 5 to 10 working days. If you decide to appeal, you will be charged a €15 fee which will be refunded to you if the result is overturned. Payment can be made by Mastercard or Visa Credit/Debit Cards.

If the original result was found to be incorrect, you will be provided with a new driver theory test certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the driver CPC course?

The purpose of the CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) driver course is to ensure that professional drivers possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to perform their duties safely and effectively. It aims to enhance road safety, reduce the risk of accidents, and improve the standards of professional driving across various sectors. Through the CPC driver course, drivers gain insights into topics such as road regulations, vehicle maintenance, hazard awareness, and eco-friendly driving practices, equipping them with the competence and confidence to navigate diverse driving situations responsibly.

The CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) driver modules are structured to be completed at a pace of one module per year, allowing drivers to gradually build upon their knowledge and skills over time. This approach ensures that drivers have ample opportunity to absorb and apply the information learned in each module, promoting a thorough understanding of key concepts and enhancing their competency as professional drivers.

However, it's worth noting that drivers are not restricted to completing one module per year. They have the flexibility to complete all required modules within a shorter timeframe if they wish to do so. This means that drivers can choose to undertake multiple modules in a single year if they prefer a more intensive or accelerated learning schedule.

You will be presented with 40 MCQs. Some applicants get overconfident and think that multiple-choice questions are easy and can be done without studying. This is not the case. You need to study well to be able to attempt these questions.

Secondly, they are randomly selected by the computer. To pass the test, you need to get 87.5% marks i.e. 35 MCQs correct.

Your knowledge of road rules, vehicle control, hazard awareness, risk perception and other topics will be checked.

You will get 45 minutes to complete the test.

After you pass the theory, you will be called for the practical exam. Remember, the exam takers don’t comment on your driving during the test, so don’t worry if they seem quiet.

Initially, the exam taker might ask you a few general questions regarding driving. Next, you will drive for more or less five miles under different traffic and road conditions.

If you are looking for material to help you pass the exam, we recommend trying the free tests which are available on The Theory Test Ireland . We have mock tests which are the same as the real ones. You can take as many attempts for practice as you want!

Definitive Guide to Getting Your Driving License in Ireland

Are you wondering how you can apply for your driving license in Ireland? No worries. This article covers all that you need to know. The NDS (National Driver Licensing Service) issues both the driver’s license and learner's permit.

Prerequisite to Getting Your Driver’s License

You need to meet the following prerequisites before you apply for a driver’s license in Ireland.

  • Be a resident of Ireland.
  • Live in Ireland for a minimum of 185 days a year.
  • Have been living in Ireland for at least a year before you attempt the driving test.

4 Steps to Get Your Driving License

1. Pass the Theory Test: Even before you give the practical test, you need to pass the theory test. For this, you need to study from the official material provided. To be sure that you understand the test pattern, appearing for mock tests is a good idea. If you want to try free tests, you can always go and check out the number of free tests available on this website. Next, apply for the official test online on the RSA website .

2. Get a Learner Permit: Once you have passed the theory test, you can apply for your learner’s permit with the NDLS . This can be done online or by visiting them in person.

3. Practice: After you get the learner’s permit, practice with a professional. You can get essential driving training courses for learning to drive.

4. Pass the Test: When you are satisfied that you know how to drive properly and can pass the practical test, you are ready. You can go and give the test.

The last step in getting your driving license is to apply for a full license after you get your Certificate of Competency. This is given to you when you clear the test and is valid for 2 years.

Getting your Perfect Driving Test Score - Tips and Tricks

Once you have passed the theory test (refer to our article How to Ace your Mock Theory Test), you will be required to pass the practical driving test. Don’t worry, breathe! First of all, relax! This article includes the top tips that will help you pass the test.

1. Study Well

The book is easily available for download online or can be purchased from any local bookshop. Along with the book, it is a good idea to get a good grasp on the offences and familiarise yourself with them. The better prepared you are, the better it is for you.

2. Complete all the Lessons and Pre-Tests

We always recommend being on the safe side. According to law, you are required to complete 2 dozen ETLs (essential training lessons) with an instructor. But, take as many as you want to.

3. Prepare like a Pro

Pre-preparation is essential. Keep all your documents in check a day before. Get your car checked too. Reach the center 10 minutes earlier than the reporting time.

4. Remain Confident, Focused and Calm

Self-confidence goes a long way. Even the best drivers are unable to perform well when they panic. Therefore, it is important to stay calm, focused and confident. Tell yourself “I am prepared for this, I can do it.” Breathe deep and slow.

5. Keep a Good Distance

Learn the golden 2-second rule. There should be a distance of at least 2 seconds between the car in front of you and your car. During training, keep a greater distance.

6. Observe your Surroundings

Keep an eye open and see every yield sign, red light etc. Be careful not to miss any. If you miss one, you will fail. Remember one thing: never speed up!

How to Ace your Mock Theory Test

Are you about to apply for your Irish driving license? First of all, congratulations! When it comes to driving tests, it is not only about how you drive your vehicle. You need to understand the rules and regulations of driving. The theory is equally important. The basic things that you need to know are:

  • The Rules of the road
  • What do road signs stand for
  • What are the risks that can occur on the road
  • Road traffic and its characteristics
  • Basic vehicle maintenance
  • What to do in case of an emergency etc.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. If you are about to apply for your mock theory tests, practice will make you perfect. You can go through the book as many times as you want to, but attempting tests is the better option. You will know exactly where you stand.

3 Steps to Ace Your Mock Theory Test

1. Attempt a Mock Theory Test: By attempting test questions, you can know how well-prepared you are. For example, try the car theory test to check your understanding of the relevant material.

2. Pick a Topic: Go slow and go topic-wise. When it comes to the actual test, it is computerised. The computer will randomly pick 40 questions for you which will need to be attempted. No one can say for sure that the questions will come from a particular topic. So, it is important to understand and learn each topic thoroughly. Once you are done with a particular topic, attempt the mock test topic-wise.

3. Practice, Practice and Practice: Pick online tests that are just like the real ones. With Theory Test Ireland, you can practice tests day and night. Moreover, they are as good as the real ones.

With our mock tests, you can practice tests 24/7 for free. With a proper test, you will be able to ace your actual test with ease.

What Happens After You Pass Your Driving Tests?

Did you just pass your theory and practical exam? Well Done! Surely, it is a time to celebrate. Undoubtedly, the first thing you might want to do is to get on the road and show off your driving skills. In fact, you don’t get the drive immediately but have to apply and get your driving license.

Certificate of Competency

Firstly, you are issued with a certificate of competency. This is not your driving license. Until you get an official driving license, you need to abide by the rules of the learner’s permit. This certificate will be liable for 2 years.

If you are unable to apply for your driving license during this time frame, you will have to go through the entire process again.

Once you get the driving license, you need to be very responsible. Your life and the life of people around you depend on you. People who pass the automatic vehicle test can only drive an automatic vehicle.

Rules and Regulations for Novice Drivers

  • The first two years you drive, you will drive in a vehicle that has N-plates.
  • You can’t accompany or sponsor a B-category learner driver
  • A 20 mg drug alcohol level applies to you.
  • After 7 penalty points, you will be disqualified.

Remember: The learning process does not end with the driving test. Even the most experienced drivers can end up in accidents. Many factors affect driving ability. These are road and lighting conditions, weather, traffic conditions etc.

With time, you will gain experience and think you are a pro. This is dangerous. When you have years of experience behind you, you can become overconfident. This is not right.

Be vigilant, be prepared, be cautious. You can never be careful enough on the road. Lives depend on the way you drive. So, be careful and responsible on the road!

What does CPC Module 2 assess?

Module 2 of the Driver CPC qualification consists of case studies based on real-life scenarios. These scenarios demonstrate situations you may face and need to be able to deal with in your working life. The case study test allows you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding and assesses you on how to put your knowledge and skills into practice. Remember, this module requires you to use what you have learned to make your own judgements on each scenario. The CPC Module 2 assessment lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes and tests you on 6 to 8 case studies. You will then be asked between 5 and 10 questions about the scenarios in each case study. Answers can be provided in 4 ways but will usually either be from a multiple-choice list or require you to click on certain areas of an image or photograph. As mentioned, you have to pass the Driver CPC Case Study Test before you are able to take Driver CPC Practical Demonstration Test ( CPC Module 4 ).

As a professional driver of large goods vehicles, you could encounter any of the circumstances in the case studies during your working life. The questions asked are designed to make you think about how you should behave in each scenario. The Driver CPC Module Case Studies also assess 3 key skills:

  • Your knowledge – You will be tested on your basic ability to recall factual information.
  • Comprehension – You will be tested on your basic ability to understand situations you may face in your working life.
  • Your application of knowledge – You will be tested on your ability to practically apply your knowledge and understanding to real-life situations.

What can you expect in the CPC Module 2 test?

As outlined above, the test will last 90 minutes and be made up of between 6 and 8 case study scenarios. Before the test starts, you have 15 minutes to get to grips with how the testing equipment works. This means you will have 75 minutes in which to answer the questions on the case studies. You will be using a Visual Display Unit (VDU) like the one used for the Theory Test.

Each case study has between 5 and 10 questions asked about each scenario. However, whether you have 6 or 8 scenarios in your test you will always be asked a total of 50 questions. To register your responses, you can either use the mouse or the touch screen functionality of the VDU.

If you have already sat the multiple-choice and hazard perception tests for Module 1, then you will be familiar with how to use the VDU.

CPC Module 2 Questions and Answers

There are four possible ways you will be asked to answer the questions appearing on the right of your screen. These four ways are detailed below:

1. Multiple Choice Questions

As in the Module 1 theory test, some questions will require you to choose just ONE correct answer from a list of possible options.

2. Multi-response Questions

You may also have been asked questions like these in the theory test. For multi-response questions, you are required to select more than one right answer from a list of options.

3. Audio Questions

Some questions about the case studies require you to listen to an additional audio clip. You will need to listen to an audio clip to be able to answer these questions. Audio questions require you to choose just ONE correct answer from a list of options.

4. Hot Spot

Hot spot questions require the use of the mouse or a touch screen to click on appropriate areas of photographs or illustrations.

During the 15 minutes before the test starts, you will have the chance to practice answering questions asked in each of these ways. However, the practice questions will not be scored.

Once you have answered all of the questions relating to a case study you can click on the ‘next’ button located on the bottom left of the screen. This will take you to the next case study until you have completed 50 questions. You are able to double-check or change answers in previous case studies at any time if you realise you answered something wrong.

The CPC Module 2 pass mark

As of 21 st March 2011, the pass mark for the Driver CPC has gone up to 40. You will be asked a total of 50 questions, so need a pass mark of 80% to pass your Driver CPC. Once you have passed Module 2 you will have 2 years to pass the Driver CPC 4 practical demonstration test.

How to prepare for the Driver CPC

In order to prepare for the Driver CPC module 2, there are a number of simple steps you can undertake. The key is to revise using example questions. However, note that the questions you will be asked during the test will not be exactly the same as the questions you revise. Nevertheless, they will be a variation of the questions and revising gives you the chance to be prepared with the knowledge required to answer the questions however they may have been asked. You should also:

1. Understand the Driver CPC

It will be useful to understand each of the different modules involved in the Driver CPC before taking this test. Make sure you understand the differences between Modules 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the Driver CPC.

2. Practice with our online resources

It is vital to practice with example questions. Our CPC module 2 practice material covers everything you need to pass the test. This includes:

  • Safe and Fuel-Efficient Driving (SAFED)
  • Load safety
  • Securing loads
  • Regulations governing carrying certain load types
  • Regulations that govern the prevention of trafficking
  • Regulations that govern driver hours and tachographs
  • Health & Safety at Work
  • Keeping yourself fit for the job
  • Dealing with emergencies
  • The role of a driver in a company or organisations
  • Organisation of freight transport
  • Other techniques for safe driving

3. Make sure to read example questions

You will need to read example questions on each of these areas. Make sure to read a variety of questions for each topic area to ensure you richly understand the subject.

4. Practice

It is a good idea to randomly practice answering questions from each of these sections. You may find you are more comfortable in some areas than others. Once you feel you are ready, it is advisable to take a practice test.

5. Practice tests

Once you have practised answering questions for each of the sections, it is a good idea to practice under exam conditions. This will help you feel more comfortable on the day of the test.

You will receive the results on the day of the test as they are available within 10 minutes of completing the test. The pass letter is dated and you have two years to complete Part 4 of the Driver CPC from this date.

If you fail Module 2 of the Driver CPC, your results letter will explain why you have failed and provide feedback. You can book a re-test on the same day but this will take a minimum of three working days to be cleared and approved.

Steps to become a professional bus driver.

This is an overview of the steps you must take to become a qualified professional driver in your chosen licence category.

To obtain a category D (CPC bus) driving licence you must hold a full valid, category B (car or light van) driving licence and successfully complete all the relevant Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) requirements. You must also prove your identity and your entitlement to a driving licence or learner permit. This means proving that you are at least 21 years of age when applying for a category D (CPC bus) learner permit, that you are normally resident in Ireland, that you have a valid address and personal public services number (PPSN), and that you are medically fit to drive. You should also ensure that your vehicle is safe, roadworthy, insured, taxed and displays L-plates.

If you previously obtained a full category D1 (minibus) licence on or before 9 September 2008, you may be exempt from some or all Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) requirements.

The theory test is computer-based and user-friendly. You can book an appointment to take the bus theory test at one of our 40+ theory test centres nationwide.. The theory test checks your knowledge of topics such as the Rules of the Road, risk perception, eco-driving, hazard awareness, and safe driving behaviour. When you pass the theory test you are issued with a theory test certificate. This is valid for up to two years.

The case study test requires you to answer questions on three real-life situations a professional CPC bus driver might face. The test is computer-based, user-friendly and takes about 120 minutes. You have the option to sit your case study test at home or in one of the 40+ theory test centres nationwide. When you pass you are issued with a case study test certificate. This is valid for up to two years.

A learner permit allows you to drive on all public roads, except motorways, for the purposes of learning to drive a bus and only drive when accompanied by someone who has held a full, valid driving licence in the same category for more than two years.

To prepare for your practical driving test, it is recommended that all new first-time category D (CPC bus) learner permit holders take lessons with an RSA Approved Driving Instructor. These will help you develop the additional driving and road safety awareness skills you will need to drive a bus professionally.

Before taking the practical driving test you must have passed the category D (bus) or combined C and D (truck and bus) driver theory test, hold a valid category D (CPC bus) learner permit and have passed the case study test. The practical driving test checks your knowledge of the Rules of the Road, your ability to drive competently and safely in accordance with those rules and with regard for other road users. The test takes about 90 minutes. It's a combination of questions to test your knowledge and a practical test of your driving skills and awareness.

Before taking the walkaround test you must have passed the category D (bus) or combined C and D (truck and bus) driver theory test, hold a valid category D learner permit, have passed the case study test and passed the practical driving test. The walkaround test checks your ability to keep both your vehicle and passengers safe and secure. The test takes about 30 minutes. We recommend that you complete both your practical driving test and walkaround test on the same day.

When you pass the practical driving test you are issued with a certificate of competency. When you pass the walkaround test you are issued with a copy of the tester's marking sheet. Both are valid for up to two years. You must apply for a category D (CPC bus) driving licence within that time. This allows you to drive on all public roads, including motorways, but not in a professional capacity. If you are still a category B (car and light van) novice driver, you must display N-plates on any vehicle you drive for the first two years.

Once you get your category D (CPC bus) licence you must then apply for your driver CPC card. You cannot drive professionally until you get this card. You must have passed all four CPC tests (driver theory test, case study test, practical driving test, and walkaround test) before you can apply for a full category D (CPC bus) card.

Getting your driver CPC card is just one step in becoming a truly safe and competent professional bus driver. You should continue to drive carefully and build up your experience in different traffic, weather, lighting and road conditions. The Road Safety Authority offers a range of learning materials that will help you develop your road safety awareness and skills. To stay qualified and maintain your driver CPC card you must attend mandatory RSA training every year for five years.

You can now easily manage all your driver services, tests, permits and licences online on MyRoadSafety.
