Are you planning to use your plan to apply for a loan or pitch to investors? Then it's worth following the format from your chosen sample plan to ensure you cover all necessary information.

But, if you don't plan to share your plan with anyone outside of your business—you likely don't need everything.

About the Total Solar Eclipse Planning Toolkit

The precise alignment required for a total solar eclipse to cross over a specific region, such as Indiana, is a rare and awe-inspiring celestial coincidence. Despite total solar eclipses occurring approximately every eighteen months worldwide, they only occur about every 400 years in the same place.

How to stay safe during the April 8 solar eclipse

Here's how to protect your eyes and stay safe during the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024.

1. Get certified eclipse glasses ahead of the event

2. know when to use solar eclipse glasses, 3. prepare for backcountry travel, 4. pay attention to weather and conditions, 5. stay safe in cities, 6. don't get lost, and avoid traffic jams.

A solar eclipse will be visible across North America on April 8 . 

Everyone in the U.S. will see at least a partial solar eclipse , but only those within the 115-mile-wide (185 kilometers) path of totality will witness the sun's face completely blocked by the moon's shadow for up to 4 minutes, 28 seconds. 

Only during totality — when the sun's face is completely blocked — is it safe to look at the totally eclipsed sun's corona with the naked eye. At all other times, including during the partial phase of the eclipse, you must wear certified solar eclipse glasses to view the sun. 

There are some safety issues to be aware of at other times, too.  Here are six tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable viewing of the solar eclipse.

Solar eclipse glasses are plentiful and inexpensive. Buy them before stocks run low, and get them only from this list of verified suppliers of safe solar filters and viewers on the American Astronomical Society's AAS Solar Eclipse Task Force website. Only then can you be sure that they comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard, which means they reduce visible sunlight to safe and comfortable levels and block all but a tiny fraction of solar UV and IR radiation.

Do NOT use sunglasses, solar filters meant for cameras and telescopes, smoked glass, welder's goggles, photographic or X-ray film, potato-chip bags or DVDs to view the partially eclipsed sun . None of these methods are safe.

You can use solar eclipse glasses to look at the sun anytime. Typically, however, solar eclipse glasses are used to view the sun from the moment the moon starts to cross it — a time known as first contact. You must use solar eclipse glasses to look at the eclipse whenever the sun is only partially covered, which is the entire time on April 8 for most of North America. 

Although the path of totality on April 8 will include several major cities and metropolitan areas, it crosses a lot of backcountry. Many people will chase clear skies, which could take them to areas they hadn't planned on visiting. Remote parts of Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, in particular, are short on facilities and gas stations. So bring everything you need, including a full fuel tank and extra food, water, cash and toilet paper. 

In April, you can expect the unexpected, with everything from snow in the Northeast to tornadoes in the Midwest. In remote areas of the northeastern U.S. and Canada, the mountains, lakes and forests may provide a beautiful backdrop, but conditions in the backcountry that time of year can be difficult.

"Since visitors may not be familiar with the area's ever-changing weather and early spring conditions, our most important role is to share important information about being safe and well-prepared and about the planned events throughout the region," representatives from the Adirondacks' Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) said in a statement . 

ROOST encourages people  to avoid mountain trails and waters. Read up on the climate along the eclipse track , look at weather forecasts and decide the best place to watch the eclipse the day before the event.

If you decide to watch the eclipse from a city sidewalk — perhaps even during a lunch break at work — then watch out. Wandering into roads and other dangerous situations is easier than you might think when you're looking through solar eclipse glasses. The best, easiest and safest eclipse-observing site is an open space or park, which will likely have a much better view of the eclipse than city streets, where buildings could easily block the view. 

The biggest cities inside the path are Mazatlán and Torreón, Mexico; San Antonio, Austin and Dallas, Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Hamilton, Ontario; Montreal Quebec.

Relocating at the last minute in search of clear weather is not particularly recommended unless the roads are clear and you have multiple backup plans. An excellent way to monitor the traffic situation both before and after the eclipse is to use Google Maps or similar apps to monitor live traffic information.

However, you need to know your destination. A great way to begin your research is to use an interactive eclipse map and note the eclipse schedules for various locations in advance. Fred Espenak's Road Atlas for the Total Solar Eclipse of 2024 and Michael Zeiler's Field Guide to the 2023 and 2024 Solar Eclipses ensure you have a spiral-bound hard copy of the path of totality in case you lose your cellphone connection. A great option is to download the Solar Eclipse Timer App , which provides audio commentary on exactly what to expect and when to expect it and instantly tells you if you're inside the path of totality.

House Republican budget calls for raising the retirement age for Social Security

WASHINGTON — A new budget by a large and influential group of House Republicans calls for raising the Social Security retirement age for future retirees and restructuring Medicare.

The proposals, which are unlikely to become law this year, reflect how many Republicans will seek to govern if they win the 2024 elections. And they play into a fight President Joe Biden is seeking to have with former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party as he runs for re-election.

The budget was released Wednesday by the Republican Study Committee , a group of more than 170 House GOP lawmakers, including many allies of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Apart from fiscal policy, the budget endorses a series of bills “designed to advance the cause of life,” including the Life at Conception Act, which would aggressively restrict abortion and potentially threaten in vitro fertilization , or IVF, by establishing legal protections for human beings at “the moment of fertilization.” It has recently caused consternation within the GOP following backlash to an Alabama Supreme Court ruling that threatened IVF.

The RSC, which is chaired by Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla., counts among its members Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and his top three deputies in leadership. Johnson chaired the RSC from 2019 to 2021; his office did not immediately respond when asked about the new budget.

For Social Security, the budget endorses "modest adjustments to the retirement age for future retirees to account for increases in life expectancy." It calls for lowering benefits for the highest-earning beneficiaries. And it emphasizes that those ideas are not designed to take effect immediately: "The RSC Budget does not cut or delay retirement benefits for any senior in or near retirement."

The new budget also calls for converting Medicare to a "premium support model," echoing a proposal that Republican former Speaker Paul Ryan had rallied support for. Under the new RSC plan, traditional Medicare would compete with private plans and beneficiaries would be given subsidies to shop for the policies of their choice. The size of the subsidies could be pegged to the "average premium" or "second lowest price" in a particular market, the budget says.

The plan became a flashpoint in the 2012 election, when Ryan was GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's running mate, and President Barack Obama charged that it would "end Medicare as we know it." Ryan defended it as a way to put Medicare on better financial footing, and most of his party stood by him.

Medicare is projected to become insolvent in 2028, and Social Security will follow in 2033. After that, benefits will be forcibly cut unless more revenues are added.

Biden has blasted Republican proposals for the retirement programs, promising that he will not cut benefits and instead proposing in his recent White House budget to cover the future shortfall by raising taxes on upper earners.

The RSC budget also presents a conundrum for Trump, who has offered shifting rhetoric on Social Security and Medicare without proposing a clear vision for the future of the programs.

Notably, the RSC budget presents three possible options to address the projected insolvency of the retirement programs: raise taxes, transfer money from the general fund or reduce spending to cover the shortfall.

It rejects the first two options.

"Raising taxes on people will further punish them and burden the broader economy–something that the spend and print regime has proven to be disastrous and regressive," the budget says, adding that the committee also opposes "a multi-trillion-dollar general fund transfer that worsens our fiscal situation."

That leaves spending cuts.

The RSC budget launches blistering criticism at "Obamacare," or the Affordable Care Act, and calls for rolling back its subsidies and regulations that were aimed at extending insurance coverage.

Microsoft Copilot is quickly becoming one of the most popular AI chatbots, in part because it offers much of the functionality of ChatGPT Plus for free , but also because its built into every Microsoft product.

Artificial intelligence tools like Copilot can be incredibly powerful, or they can be yet another blank canvas to stare at for hours not knowing where to start. That is the point of Prompt_Jitsu, a series of prompt ideas to get you started.

I'm a big fan of Microsoft Copilot, it builds on the core models found in ChatGPT but with a more consumer-friendly interface and control over the creativity of the output.

Fun prompts for Microsoft Copilot

I’ve tried to create a mixed set of prompts that can be adapted to fit your own needs. For example one prompt is to create a flyer for a fictional music festival you could adapt for anything from a bake sale to a kids birthday party .

1. Planning a vacation

Copilot

We're going to kick things off with some light vacation planning. I've got a busy year ahead and don't see a trip on the horizon, so this is more window shopping — but it is a good chance to see how tools like Copilot can help with inspiration.

For day one it suggested I spend it in Tokyo, suggested Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku and dina at Izakaya that evening. The total trip included visits to Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Horishima and Mount Fuji. I'm exhausted already!

The prompt: “Create a 7-day itinerary for a dream vacation in Japan, including must-visit destinations, unique experiences, and local culinary delights. Offer suggestions for accommodations and transportation options to make the trip planning process easier.”

Remember with AI chatbots you don't have to just rely on a single prompt. You can follow up with requests such as, lets keep it all in Tokyo for the full seven days, now refine the itinerary, or suggest alternative hotels. You can adapt this prompt with the country of your choice, or even make it a city break.

2. Writing a love song

Some weeks with Prompt_Jitsu I'll try to create a theme, this week the theme is cool things to try in Copilot, with no particular link. Although maybe you could use this prompt to create a love song to sing to someone you met in Japan.

The prompt: “Compose a heartfelt love song that captures the essence of a long-distance relationship. Include lyrics that express the challenges, yearning, and unwavering commitment of two people separated by distance but united by their love.”

This prompt will give you a set of lyrics for a love song if Suno is disabled in the plugins menu. If you have Suno enabled it will create a full song with vocals.

In my cases included the following line in the chorus: "Cause you're the sound of my heart, the beat in my chest. Every time you're near, I can't catch my breath." 

3. Promotional poster

Microsoft Copilot Designer

You've got your song, now you need somewhere to perform the track. This next prompt will use Designer, the DALL-E powered image generator in Copilot to generate a poster for a fictional music festival.

The prompt: “Design a series of eye-catching promotional posters for a fictional music festival featuring an eclectic mix of genres and artists. Include elements that reflect the festival's theme, location, and overall vibe, and create designs that would appeal to a wide audience.”

You can adapt the prompt to reflect a real world scenario or event. Adjust the prompt to replace fictional music festival with something like "flyer for ten year old's birthday party" or even "garage sale". You can also edit the image in Designer to change the resolution or adjust any individual feature.

4. Creating a business plan

Microsoft Copilot Designer

You've been to Japan, written a killer love song and created a poster for a fake music festival. Why not now develop a business plan for a clothing line to sell at the fake music festival? Lets make it eco-friendly.

The prompt: “Develop a detailed business plan for a sustainable, eco-friendly clothing line that uses innovative materials and production methods. Include information on target market, product offerings, pricing strategy, marketing approach, and financial projections.”

In my case it offered up a target market description, product offerings, pricing strategy and financial projections. It was just an overview but you can use follow up prompts. It suggests some such as "what are some innovative materials I can use?" and "How do I find ethical manufacturers for my clothing line?".

I also asked Copilot to create an image of one of the products we might sell.

5. Mental health awareness

We've travelled the world, expressed our undying love through song, designed a poster for a music festival and made a business plan to sell eco-friendly clothing. Now its time to put something back into society with a speech.

The prompt: “Write a persuasive speech advocating for the importance of mental health awareness and support in the workplace. Include statistics, personal anecdotes, and practical strategies for creating a more supportive and inclusive work environment.”

In the first response it gave me a rough outline and structure, including bullet points and links for quotes and statistics — so I had to follow up with a request for the full speech.

No business can succeed without social media promotion. This next prompt will generate a series of prompts to promote a pet grooming business, and not just normal promo posts but tips, images and more.

The prompt: “Generate a series of fun and engaging social media posts for a pet grooming business, including tips for pet owners, behind-the-scenes glimpses of the grooming process, and adorable images of freshly groomed pets.”

It gave me five posts and even generated images to use in the posts requiring pictures. It suggested starting with tips for shiny fur, followed by a behind the scenes on a grooming session and at the end a meet the team.

7. Designing a garden

Microsoft Copilot Designer

After all that hard work why not design your dream garden, or at least use Copilot to give you a step-by-step guide to laying a raised garden bed.

The prompt: “Create a step-by-step guide for building a raised garden bed, including materials needed, tools required, and detailed instructions for each stage of the process. Offer tips for selecting the right location, choosing plants, and maintaining the garden over time.”

It effectively gave me a recipe with materials, tools and instructions. It also suggests location ideas, ideal plants and advice on maintaining the garden.

You could follow the prompt with specific requests around style, seasonality or even replace raised bed with herb garden or rockery.

Department of Corrections plan eclipse event for inmates

ST. ALBANS, Vt. (WCAX) - The total solar eclipse is April 8, and as people make individual plans to enjoy this celestial event, the Department of Corrections is planning something big.

Earlier this month, a viewer wrote in asking if Vermont’s prisons would be arranging an event for the eclipse, and the answer is yes. The correctional facility in St. Albans is in the path of totality, and Isaac Dayno from Vermont’s Department of Corrections says inmates will get the chance to view it.

“We are trying to bring elements of Vermont’s communities into our correctional settings. That could be something as simple as viewing an astronomical phenomenon,” said Dayno

DOC says they have arranged eclipse safe-viewing glasses for the inmates.
