Critical thinking apps aren’t the sweet spot of mobile app design.

Most of the more popular apps are focused on social media, productivity, or what always seem to be mindless games. The fact that most apps  don’t  force users to think critically doesn’t mean that it isn’t possible, however. The lack of cognitively demanding apps is more of an indictment of the users than the technology itself.

There are many apps that do promote critical thinking–and often extended critical thinking and learning at that. These aren’t clinical ‘critical thinking building’ programs either, but rather often enjoyable exercises in strategy, tactics, and problem-solving thought. So below, we’ve collected 25 of these critical thinking apps. Most are for grades 8-12, but several are for students as young as kindergarten.

See also What Is Critical Thinking?

Helping students think critically is less a matter of direct instruction, and more a matter of providing them with access to dynamic tools with unique and playful barriers or goals that require the best strategy they can muster, while providing instant feedback to the player as they go. Though they’re not learning specific academic content in most of these apps, they are practicing extended thinking over a period of time that encourages them to look at digital circumstances with a critical eye.

critical thinking app ios

Gone are the days where children were expected to memorize facts and recite them at any given time. Instead, it is hoped that children will develop critical thinking skills so that they can analyze situations, think about different outcomes, and present well-reasoned conclusions. To help children develop critical thinking skills, there are some apps, tools, and resources. Here is a list of the top seven.

  • Guess the Code

While this app is presented as a game, it is actually a great way for children to look at patterns and sequences, and try to figure them out. The app generates different color combinations, and it is up to the user to decipher the pattern and enter the next color.

  • SimplePhysics

Physics can be a daunting subject, but the new way of approaching it makes physics more of a hands-on subject that gets students to engage in problem-solving actively. SimplePhysics provides games and puzzles that test the limits of students’ critical thinking skills.

  • A Clockwork Brain

This app has a range of games in such categories as memory, attention, language, reasoning, and dexterity. Critical thinking is strengthened as children must work quickly to solve the problems before moving on to more challenging puzzles.

  • Civilization VI

Now in its sixth iteration, this modern computer game is not just fun; it’s actually a place for children (and adults) to use the full extent of their imagination and critical thinking skills. The game starts with the dawn of humans, and it is up to the player to help them achieve civilization through each time period. Users must decide what it takes for a culture to evolve and this is no easy task.

  • Whooo’s Reading

One of the most important steps in the journey towards critical thinking is the ability to read and interact with books. Reading is more than just memorizing letter combinations. It is about understanding the motive behind characters and the importance of setting. It is about connecting plot developments with real life and making connections between the two. To help students engage more when reading, Whooo’s Reading is a program that works to connect books at a deeper level. As a result of this program, students often increase their love of reading and as a bonus, do better on reading exams.

Social media has become pervasive in today’s culture, and while platforms like Twitter and Instagram can lead to more harm than good for most youth, social media can be used to an educator’s advantage. Edmodo provides a platform for students and teachers to engage in collaborative projects that help to foster creative thinking skills. It is a tool that can be used to bring students’ ideas together.

  • Highlights Every Day

This app is a nostalgic treat for anyone that eagerly awaited their monthly Highlights magazine subscription. Updated for today’s technological world, Highlights Every Day is an app that features engaging puzzles, stories, and videos.

Critical thinking should be fostered because it creates students who actively engage in the world around them. It prepares children for a world where they will become adults and will need to navigate life. Critical thinking skills can be developed in fun, creative settings through the use of these apps, tools, and resources.

17 Best STEM Apps For Kids

Sharing is caring!

10 best STEM apps for kids - The Homeschool Scientist

The best STEM apps for science?  Wait, isn’t science best hands-on? Well, I am a big hands-on science advocate, but we are in the age of coding, computer technology, and apps! For our children to be competitive in the workplace, they need to be familiar with apps and the technical skills they help develop.

I used to hate it when my oldest played so many video games. Now that he is grown and a mechanical engineer, we have talked about kids, computers, gaming, etc. He was that generation that had the first Game Boys. His recent comments on kids, screen time, and gaming, “Screen time has to be in moderation. Kids still need Legos. And the software engineers I know say the best in their field spent time gaming as a kid…and still do enjoy it.”

So, we list these with the disclaimer…All in moderation, review the apps first by using them yourself for awhile, use parental controls, and stay on top of what’s going on when your child is using an app or on a website.

7 Mobile Games Apps That Will Develop Critical Thinking Skills In Your Child

Looking to boost the critical thinking abilities of your child? These mobile apps-based critical thinking games for kids can help your six to nine-year-old child develop this ability.

7 Mobile Games Apps That Will Develop Critical Thinking Skills In Your Child

Thirty-five-year-old 'quiet' Meera was at her explosive best when she noticed her eight-year-old daughter Snigdha immersed in a smartphone. "Keep that phone away! You are going to get sucked into that screen now," yelled Meera.

Does this remind you of your own conversations with your child?

Phones and tablets are seen by many parents as a source of irritation. But, several mobile apps are actually changing the way our children are exploring the world.

Research suggests that when a primary schooler plays critical thinking games for kids, he is likely to pick up several skills that will help him solve problems, draw inferences, make predictions, reason better and validate choices. All these are elements related to 'critical and independent thinking'.

Critical thinking is an important skill your child should develop. In today's 'hi-tech' world, your child will be swamped with information. So, your little critical thinker would need to make informed choices.

Nowadays, schools and universities around the world list critical thinking as an important part of the overall curriculum.

So, as a parent, the onus is on you to lay the foundation for your child to develop this skill as early as possible.

Stuck at home due to the Covid-19 Pandemic? Family-In-Corona-Out is here to help you beat the blues!

What does critical thinking include?

To the surprise of parents around the world, children between the ages of six and nine seem to get wiser overnight. According to Piaget's stages of development, children at this age become skilled at carrying out higher order mental operations, processing logical thoughts and even reversing a mental process in their head. In short, they are giving first glimpses of their critical thinking abilities. You shouldn't be surprised if your seven-year-old figures out that the milk you just poured into the big glass (which fills only half of this glass) is the same amount of milk that was in the small glass (which fills to the brim). Your child is actually resisting passivity, and is starting to explore and reconstruct new and old ideas and beliefs. Critical thinking is often described as reasoning in an open-ended manner with an unlimited number of solutions, which involves defining, analysing, arguing, evaluating, and problem-solving.

7 Critical thinking apps for kids

Encourage and hone critical thinking skills in your child by introducing him to the right kind of activities. Today, we look at some fabulous critical thinking games that can help you do just that.

Here's a list of seven popular and highly-rated critical thinking games apps that help in developing critical thinking in children between six and nine years of age.

City Island 3

If your child loves to build and break 'em down, then City Island 3 is the perfect choice. It is a building simulator game where a player starts with an empty island on which he designs and builds a city from scratch. Your child will bring to the fore his spatial reasoning , analytical and problem-solving skills. The infrastructure of the city, and the businesses that it needs to generate money to invest further is planned and created solely by the player. It will be interesting to see your child employs his logical reasoning. He will figure out that for more income, he needs to build more houses and accommodate them in the available space. The player also has to balance his profits in a way that he has enough money to pay the employees to run the businesses. Almost like a crash course in entrepreneurship and business studies, City Island 3 requires decision-making skills that are based on accurate inferences and predictions. It is a fun critical thinking app for children thanks to its features, which make it challenging and equally creative.

Penguin Rescue

This is a thrilling 'match-3' game, whose visual appeal is enough to keep your child rooted to it. The game has three levels, where the player must clear the table with the least number of moves possible. You will see how this keeps your child's fingers and brains running in 'Speed' mode. Logical processing of visual information and decision-making abilities are thoroughly tested in this critical thinking game. Unlike other match-3 games, this one has expert-designed levels where the layout is often moved around to increase the complexity of the game. Your child will easily get tuned into this thinking skills game as she strives to achieve the assigned objectives to complete every level with varied degrees of challenge.

This critical thinking puzzles game allows your child to practice swift and accurate reasoning skills as he tries to connect a series of (similar) coloured circles using an unbroken line. Don't be surprised if your child does not give your phone back to you after being introduced to this game. This app also has puzzles that increase in difficulty with each level. It can also be tweaked to introduce a time trial mode where your child must solve as many puzzles as possible. It is a lesson in effective decision-making skills under stressful situations.

Microsoft Minesweeper

This overlooked gem among the free games apps needs no introduction. It is a logical game that requires analysis of visual and numerical information to figure out the presence of mines that can 'blow up' the game. When your child feels confident, she can step up the difficulty level of the game by increasing the number of grids on the Minesweeper. Beware parents! Once your child figures out how to predict the presence of mines by using the revealed numbers, she is sure to get addicted to this simple-yet-challenging game.

Birds and Blocks 2

This is one of the critical thinking games for kids designed to hone their reasoning abilities. Your child needs to ensure that birds with clipped wings, that can't fly, do not touch the ground or fly off the screen. But, the twist comes when you realise that it is up to the child to get the bird to a safe stone block while avoiding the unsafe blocks on the way. Your child will have to employ his critical thinking skills to figure out which blocks to use - the normal ones, the bouncy ones or the ice blocks that the birds slide off from. With almost 120 levels, this game is fun and exciting!

Toon Clash Chess

No other game can beat chess when it comes to challenging your child's brain to think critically. Chess teaches your child to make predictions and inferences - key inputs for coming up with solutions. Toon Clash Chess, a child-friendly chess game, has three levels of difficulty that allows for a gentle learning curve for your child to explore and learn the game confidently. Your child can change the settings of the game, and use the unique action 3D characters with hundreds of fun arcade-style animations. He can also play the game at three provided locations.

Puzzles and Pixies

How can your child resist a game with pixies and puzzles? This brilliant matching game will push your child to use her logical processing abilities. She will need to decide how to string together similar-coloured butterflies in a way that they can summon a powerful pixie helper. The longer the strings, the more powerful the pixie gets, who can then save her forest using her newfound power. With almost 200 levels to conquer, this game induces a sense of responsibility for the environment in a young mind while also honing her intellectual skills.

All of these apps can be downloaded for free on both iOS and Android devices. These critical thinking apps will not only engage your child with devices in a productive manner, but also nurture the genius of critical thinking in her. In no time, your child will grow to be a sound critical thinker. Prepare yourself for some intriguing questions along the way.

10 Mobile Games That Will Sharpen Your Mind In Your Downtime

10 Mobile Games That Will Sharpen Your Mind In Your Downtime

Mobile gaming apps have come a long way in the last few years, and that’s probably a bit of an understatement. The rise of Apple Arcade has meant that folks are actively choosing to pay for and play quality mobile games. It’s a far cry from the days of “this is a game I have to play while on the toilet.” Though I’m sure those still exist. What we love most about the developing platform is that there are dozens of game genres available for our phones: shooters, RPGs, puzzle games, etc. But, if we’re talking about simple, brainless entertainment and time-passers, brain training games and puzzle apps have emerged as one of the most wildly popular mobile game genres on the planet.

We love brain training games because they aren’t just fun, they condition our brains to be better and sharper. Memory retention, abstraction, divided attention, word memory — a good brain game has it all. And if you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, we think it’s about time you did. Here are 10 of the best mobile brain games, puzzle apps, and concentration games out there.

Can Games Make You Smarter?

Playing games can make you smarter in a number of ways. For example, strategy games like chess can improve problem-solving skills and critical thinking, while memory and attention-based games can improve memory and attention. Learning games, such as those that teach coding or math, can help to improve specific skills and knowledge.

And you don’t have to sit down in front of a board with a group of people to get the benefits. Mobile games can be just as good for brain health if they’re designed to challenge cognitive skills. Of course, not all mobile games are created equal in terms of their cognitive benefits (no, that first person shooter isn’t going to help with memory loss).

Identifying Quality Critical Thinking Apps for K-12 Students

James Alexander Gordon on 9th March 2020

This proposed presentation discusses the essential criteria for the evaluation of iOS-based K-12 critical thinking mobile applications (apps) and reports on the findings of an evaluation study. (The study examines iOS-based apps on the App Store because it offers most educational apps.) The study attempts to answer the following two questions: (a) what are the criteria that are conducive to the selection of critical thinking apps for K-12 students?, and (b) what are the apps available that meet the criteria? Scholars have widely recognized that critical thinking is key to students’ personal and professional success. Educators have accordingly developed curricula, instructional strategies, and assessments to enhance students’ critical thinking. Recently, the educational community has integrated technological innovations, such as apps, into instruction that fosters critical thinking. However, the lack of evidence-based guidelines in the selection of the apps can undermine instructional effectiveness. This study fills this void by adapting an evidence-based evaluation instrument and subsequently uses the instrument to identify quality critical thinking apps for K-12 students. The instrument contains three major evaluation categories (i.e., content, pedagogy, and design) that researchers consider essential in critical thinking instruction and app design. Each category includes a list of evidence-based items. With the assistance of the instrument, the study uncovers a limited number of apps that meet the criteria. This presentation shares the findings of the evaluation, highlights three critical thinking apps that are considered having educational values, and discusses implications for future practice and research.

6 Best Language Apps For Critical Thinking Skills

Picture of Jefbeck Eje

  • , March 9, 2024

A portrait photo of a pensive young girl holding her phone behind the Language Apps For Critical Thinking Skills texts.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably downloaded many language apps, hoping to find the right one. But did you know the best ones can sharpen your brain, too?

Yes, it’s true. I’ve been searching around for a while now. So I thought, why not share my top picks with you? That’s why I’ve got six language apps for critical thinking skills you’ll need when learning a new language, or new languages, if you’re a polyglot. We’ll start strong with the Ling app . It’s unbeaten, not gonna lie, but let’s look at some options.

Quick Summary:

  • Native speaker audio
  • Spaced repetition
  • Leaderboards and challenges

At a glance:

  • Best For Comprehensive Learning: Ling
  • Best For Conversational Practice: Busuu
  • Best For Authentic Content: FluentU
  • Best For Real-Life Immersion: Memrise
  • Best Innovative Technology: Mondly
  • Best For Customized Learning: Lingvist

1. Ling – Best App For Comprehensive Learning & Real-Life Scenarios

The first time I used the Ling app , I was genuinely impressed by how it intertwined critical thinking with language learning. The lessons? They’re set up like games. And these games challenge you to think, not just click.

For example, the Ling app ’s quiz is not about simply remembering a word. You’ll find yourself diving deep into the context, considering various options, and making educated choices. This mental workout is what makes the Ling app stand out.

And then there are the real-life scenarios through its chatbot. Let’s say you’re navigating a lesson about ordering food in Japan. Sure, you’ll learn to say, “Can I have some sushi?” in Japanese. But mentally, you’re stepping into that Tokyo sushi bar, predicting the chef’s reactions, and strategizing your interactions.

While many critical thinking apps touch on real-life situations, the depth and authenticity the Ling app brings to these scenarios are noteworthy. This makes it a prime pick for those eager to sharpen their critical thinking while learning new languages.

2. Busuu – Best For Interactive Conversational Practice

Busuu feels like you’re jumping into a conversation from the word go, but with guidance. With this app, you’re chatting, actively participating, and thinking ahead.

One of Busuu ‘s highlights is that it lets you engage with native speakers , helping keep you alert. While doing this, you’ll consider cultural contexts, decipher potential slang, and craft thoughtful replies.

From my experience with it, Busuu’s active participation is what hones critical thinking. While the Ling app immerses you in detailed scenarios, Busuu thrives on spontaneous, real-time interactions.

It’s like the difference between practicing a speech and having an impromptu debate. Both need skill, but one demands agility and quick wit.

Devices:  Android, iOS, Web

Busuu Overview

Busuu focuses on active, conversational practice with native speakers, sharpening quick thinking and cultural awareness.

3. Memrise – Best For Immersive Real-Life Situations

Memrise is another great app for those who prefer learning a language in context, as it gives you a firsthand experience with video clips with real local speakers.

But here’s what’s interesting: real people don’t follow scripts. They have unique accents, local lingo, and a natural conversational pace, making each clip within Memrise a mini-challenge.

When learning via this method, you’re actively breaking down the dialogue, grasping the backdrop, and sometimes, making educated assumptions based on the context. This way, Memrise ensures you’re always on your toes, pushing your language and critical thinking skills to the forefront.

Memrise provides immersive experiences with real locals, offering natural dialogues and context-based challenges for in-depth learning.

  • Monthly premium:  $14.99
  • Yearly premium:  $89.99
  • Lifetime subscription:  $199.99

4. FluentU – Best For Authentic Content & Interactive Learning

FluentU aims for its users to experience a language as it’s genuinely spoken. True to its word, it offers a vast array of real-world videos that let you learn your target language in context, catching nuances you would miss otherwise.

But why does this matter for critical thinking? With each video, you’re doing more than watching and listening. You’re gauging the mood, catching cultural hints, and understanding the bigger picture.

For example, watching a documentary about a carnival in Brazil isn’t simply about comprehension. Instead, it’s a deep dive into cultural insights, regional accents, and the particularities of the event. That’s how Fluent U’s videos make you think deeper and understand better.

While other language apps for critical thinking skills , like the Ling app , gave me a structured path, FluentU gave me a vast landscape to explore and think about.

FuentU Overview

FluentU uses real-world videos to teach language, emphasizing cultural insights and comprehensive understanding through authentic content.

Another interesting feature of Mondly is its AR (Augmented Reality) lessons. With them, you get a virtual language teacher who introduces you to a world in which to practice conversations in a safe environment, relying on the phrases you’ve learned.

In my opinion, Lingvist’s precision is one of its greatest strengths. While the Ling app provides a wide-ranging, scenario-based approach, Lingvist focuses on your specific needs. This guarantees every session is a blend of language learning and critical thinking.

Why Use Language Apps For Critical Thinking Skills?

Language apps do wonders for the brain, and it’s not all about learning new words. Think of them as a fun brain workout session. Here’s a deeper dive into their benefits:

  • Brain Challenges: Each word or phrase in a language app is a puzzle piece. Your brain determines where it fits, helping you recognize patterns and connections.
  • Decision Time: When a language app quizzes you on the right word for a sentence, it’s more than a test. It’s an exercise in weighing options and refining decision-making skills.
  • Memory Training: Recalling that tisch means “table” in German? That’s your brain flexing its memory muscles, storing and retrieving information.
  • Active Learning: Language apps demand your full attention. They ensure you’re constantly thinking, analyzing, and synthesizing information.
  • Mistakes as Lessons: Got something wrong in the app? No worries. The feedback is an opportunity to reflect, adjust, and improve, helping you fine-tune your language skills.

Learn Languages With Ling!

I know that selecting a language app that also enhances critical thinking requires a thoughtful approach. A good tip is to consider your objectives. Do you want to learn by talking to native speakers? Maybe an app like Busuu can help. Do you prefer a more customized teaching style? Perhaps Lingvist is a better choice.

However, among the language apps for critical thinking skills available, the Ling app stands out . That’s because its seamless integration of language learning with fun exercises and a gamified interface help make the process much more engaging.

In addition to that, the Ling app’s focus on all language skills at once—listening, reading, writing, and speaking—gives you a more holistic learning experience. And this is accompanied by features such as pronunciation practice with a chatbot, a section to review each unit’s content, and instant pronunciation feedback, among many others.

Interested? Download the Ling app from Google Play and the App Stor e . You’ll join millions of language learners on this journey and also give your brain the workout it deserves!

The start of a new era for Siri.

With an all-new design, richer language understanding, and the ability to type to Siri whenever it’s convenient for you, communicating with Siri is more natural than ever. Equipped with awareness of your personal context, the ability to take action in and across apps, and product knowledge about your devices’ features and settings, Siri will be able to assist you like never before.

With a double tap on the bottom of your iPhone or iPad screen, you can type to Siri from anywhere in the system when you don’t want to speak out loud.

An iPhone is shown with step-by-step guidelines on how to schedule a text message to send later

Tap into the expansive product knowledge Siri has about your devices’ features and settings. You can ask questions when you’re learning how to do something new on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and Siri can give you step-by-step directions in a flash.

Siri, set an alarm for — oh wait no, set a timer for 10 minutes. Actually, make that 5.

Richer language understanding and an enhanced voice make communicating with Siri even more natural. And when you refer to something you mentioned in a previous request, like the location of a calendar event you just created, and ask ”What will the weather be like there?” Siri knows what you’re talking about.

A notification in the Apple TV+ app reminds you that a contact shared a show recommendation with you

Apple Intelligence empowers Siri with onscreen awareness , so it can understand and take action with things on your screen. If a friend texts you their new address, you can say “Add this address to their contact card,” and Siri will take care of it.

Snippets of information like calendar events, photos, and notes shows the many sources Siri can draw from

Awareness of your personal context enables Siri to help you in ways that are unique to you. Can’t remember if a friend shared that recipe with you in a note, a text, or an email? Need your passport number while booking a flight? Siri can use its knowledge of the information on your device to help find what you’re looking for, without compromising your privacy.

Photos library is shown on an iPhone along with a search description. A second iPhone is open to a single photo favorited based on the search. A third iPhone shows the photo incorporated into a note in the Notes app.

Seamlessly take action in and across apps with Siri. You can make a request like “Send the email I drafted to April and Lilly” and Siri knows which email you’re referencing and which app it’s in. And Siri can take actions across apps, so after you ask Siri to enhance a photo for you by saying “Make this photo pop,” you can ask Siri to drop it in a specific note in the Notes app — without lifting a finger.

Great powers come with great privacy.

Apple Intelligence is designed to protect your privacy at every step. It’s integrated into the core of your iPhone, iPad, and Mac through on-device processing. So it’s aware of your personal information without collecting your personal information. And with groundbreaking Private Cloud Compute, Apple Intelligence can draw on larger server-based models, running on Apple silicon, to handle more complex requests for you while protecting your privacy.

Apple Intelligence Will Infuse the iPhone With Generative AI

Craig Federighi standing next to a large screen that reads Apple Intelligence

Apple is finally getting into the generative artificial intelligence game—with a little help from an unlikely partner in OpenAI .

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced Apple’s long-awaited AI reboot at the company’s Worldwide Developer Conference in Cupertino, California, today. What the company is calling Apple Intelligence, available in beta this fall, includes a handful of features that will shape the iPhone, iPad, and Mac experiences in ways large and small. Apple also gave Siri, its currently-limited voice assistant, a significant generative AI overhaul.

The company also announced that it will incorporate outside AI models into its software, starting with OpenAI’s ChatGPT later this year, making clear that the experience will be opt-in only and won’t require a ChatGPT subscription. Siri will determine whether a query can benefit from accessing ChatGPT, and then ask for approval to share information with the model. Apple said it would tap into other AI models in the future as well.

“We’re excited to partner with Apple to bring ChatGPT to their users in a new way,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in a statement. “Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation, and this partnership aligns with OpenAI’s mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone.”

Until now, Apple has been conspicuously absent from headlines about generative AI. Competitors like Google and Microsoft have rushed to embrace the technology ever since ChatGPT burst onto the scene in late 2022. Apple has apparently been biding its time, developing a comprehensive strategy that touches on many of its products and services.

Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering at Apple, said the company’s new AI strategy will focus on privacy and security. In addition to stressing privacy-friendly, on-device AI use cases, Federighi introduced what the company calls Private Cloud Compute, a technology that claims to protect data even for more intensive AI tasks that necessitate the cloud. “Your data is never stored or made accessible to Apple,” he said.

Apple showed off Apple Intelligence across numerous apps. A feature called Writing Tools, available systemwide, can clean up your text for grammar and readability, and adjust the tone to be more friendly or more professional. Apple's so-called Image Playground will let you create images across Apple like in Messages and Notes, including AI-generated images of contacts in three different styles: sketch, illustration, and animation. You'll also be able to create custom emoji with generative AI, a feature Apple calls Genmoji. And an AI refresh to Siri will make the assistant better able to handle complex spoken commands and better able to search for information even if a command is ambiguous.

Apple will also offer smaller generative AI algorithms that run on devices. It says these algorithms will be snappier and better protect users’ data. The company will face a balancing act in emphasizing privacy and security while also pivoting to greater use of generative AI.

It had been widely rumored ahead of WWDC that Apple was working on a deal with OpenAI. On the face of it, Apple and OpenAI would seem particularly unlikely bedfellows. Apple tends to move cautiously and carefully when delivering new products, emphasizing attention to detail, obsession with the user experience, and stunning design. OpenAI is best known for throwing a powerful but experimental new AI technology into the world and watching what people do with it.

The OpenAI deal could make a lot of sense for Apple though, as it seeks to jumpstart its use of large language models. Allowing Siri to tap OpenAI’s chatbot will ensure users can access the most advanced offering on the market while reducing its own reputational risk if things go awry with the most challenging queries. The strategy will also buy Apple time while its own AI models catch up to what OpenAI can offer today.

“With Apple’s announcement, all the technology giants have now staked out their initial strategies for generative AI,” says Andy Wu , an associate professor at Harvard Business School who studies tech companies’ use of AI. Wu says that despite being relatively late to the game, Apple has a significant opportunity because of its vast user base.

However, Wu says that the cost of running powerful generative AI models along with managing their tendency to fabricate information will pose new challenges for the company. “Deploying the technology today requires incurring those risks, and doing so would be at odds with Apple’s traditional inclination toward offering polished products that it has full control over,” he says.

For now, though, Apple has at least made its AI strategy known. Now all it has to do is see that plan through—without hitting the pitfalls that have vexed every other tech giant so far.

Calculator for iPad does the math for you

Apple

One way to know for sure that you’re at a developer conference: The crowd gets really excited when you announce a new Calculator app. The addition of the app got (by far) the biggest applause pop at WWDC 2024 so far. Granted, the company has an hour or so left to announce all of its intelligence features.

iOS’ perennial tips calculating app is finally coming to the larger screen. The feature utilizes the additional screen real estate to bring new features that the company couldn’t really jam into the iPhone. The biggest arrival here is the addition of Math Notes: The additional feature does the math for you.

The feature that makes iPad an even more interesting option is the academic segment, though plenty of teachers will no doubt balk at an app that does all of the work for users. And we thought we had it good with graphing calculators back in the day.

Draw a formula with the Apple Pencil, and the on-board AI will do the difficult job of actually solving the problem. Apple briefly noted during today’s event that the feature is also coming to macOS Sequoia . Both it and iPadOS 15 should be arriving later this year.

Apple also announced visionOS 2 for the Vision Pro as well as updates to the Photos app .

Description.

"This app is the gold standard if you want to help your little one learn how to have fun while learning patterns." Learning Patterns helps your child develop critical thinking and mental reasoning skills thus expanding a very important part of their mind. Plus, even adults will have fun playing with this app at the more advanced levels. :-) Approved by parents, teachers, and kids the world over. Learning Patterns is an exciting interactive game that helps you learn how to recognize and complete patterns all with just the touch of your finger. Pattern recognition and completion represents an important developmental skill for kids of all ages. The interface is so easy to use that even a toddler will delight in moving their first objects around the page. The app supports two modes to learning patterns. In the first mode, you decide the type of objects you want to use to learn to recognize patterns such as numbers, letters, images, etc. Once you start, the app will start with the most basic patterns such as ABABAB and it automatically increases the difficulty based on the users skills. The difficulty increases in two ways. First, the patterns get increasingly difficulty. Second, the missing tile moves from the last place to the second place and later the last two tiles are missing. The second mode allows you to zero in on specific patterns and lets students master that pattern with a huge variety of different images. The patterns included in this app are: ABABAB AABBAA ABBABB AABAAB AAABBB ABCABC ABCDAB ABCCBA IF there are other types of patterns you would like us to add please let us know and we can easily get them added. In total, the app focuses on 8 unique patterns and includes 3 levels of difficulty for each pattern like this: ABABA? A?ABAB ABAB?? The app also comes with over 25 unique collections of items to learn patterns. This way you can learn patterns by letters, numbers, colors, shapes, dots, balloons, hats, fruits, vegetables, animals, vehicles, etc. The huge variety of patterns and collections means that there are almost an infinite way of learning patterns which ensures to keep kids excited and engaged vs. getting bored by always staring at the same content. Not only that, at the end of every session you automatically get a beautiful summary to see exactly how your little one did. HEROIC SUPPORT Heroic Support is not just what we do. Ratings and Reviews

Great teaching app.

My favorite app for my daughter is this one now. Why I think it deserves to be top of my list is because it's not only teaching pattern recognition in a very fun way but it's using letters and numbers to do it. What that means to me is she is learning pattern, letters, and numbers all from 1 app. And she loves it on top of all that! Couldn't ask for a better app although I know this creator will surprise me with another great app as they always do.
I babysit during the day, and Learning Patterns Pro has become part of our 'learning time' routine. Kids at this age are just starting to develop critical thinking skills, and the app is a fun and interactive way for them to practice. I highly recommend it for teachers, parents, and family with kids under age 5. There are several other awesome apps by this developer, so be sure to check out those too!

Another great app

Learning Patterns Pro is a great app for teaching your child pattern recognition. My daughter LOVES playing it. If it wasn't for my battery life she would prob play it all day. There are of course different levels for your child so they can actually move up and have a sense of accomplishment which any parent can tell you is key to any learning aid and to keep the kid using it.
