How To Be An Ideal Student

Being an ideal student is not as hard as it seems. In fact, with a few simple tips, you can make being a good student easy and second nature. Here are four tips to help get you started—

Come To The Class Prepared | This means having your materials ready and knowing what the assignment is. It also means being respectful of your teacher and classmates and not talking while the teacher is speaking.

Do your homework | This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s important to actually do the work, not just copy it from someone else. Not only will you learn the material better, but you’ll also get better grades.

Get Involved In Extracurricular Activities | Being active in activities outside of school shows that you are well-rounded and have interests outside of academics. This can look great on college applications and resumes.

Stay Organised | This includes keeping track of your assignments, materials, and deadlines. It also means having a place for everything and putting things back where they belong. If you can stay organised, you’ll be able to avoid last-minute stressors.

Following these tips will help make you an ideal student and set you up for success in the future.

Essay on Ideal Students in 500 Words

Every student dreams of achieving great success in life. Parents, from an early age, enroll their children in good schools where teachers educate children about the world and provide them with a platform where they can explore their skills and master them.

A student holds great importance in a country’s future. Today, India has a population of more than 1.4 billion people, out of which 265 million are students. Not every student possesses the same level of intelligence. Some are naturally born with intelligence, while others struggle to fit in. Albert Einstein, the renowned theoretical physicist, once said, ’ Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.’

It is not easy to become an ideal student. It requires discipline, consistent hard work, cooperation and collaboration with other students, and patience.

Consistency is the Key

An average student aspiring to become an ideal student must consistently work hard towards his studies and goals. There is a popular quote, ‘Rome was not built in a day.’ It means that to achieve something, you must work consistently and deliberately. As students, we are often impatient and expect the world to turn around quickly. Therefore, we must patiently focus on our goals.

Respect Everyone

As a student, it is expected that we respect everyone around us. When we learn to respect people, our behaviour is appreciated, and it shows that we care about other people’s feelings. Not just elders and teachers, but among other students as well, we must respect each other. By doing so, we can create a positive environment where everyone can feel valued and respected.

Studies show that when a person receives respect, there is an increase in his or her confidence level. Simple gestures like ‘Good morning’, ‘Hello, how are you?’, etc. can be great ways to show respect towards others.

Maintain Discipline

An ideal student always maintains discipline, whether it is about academics, career goals, personal life, or general life. Discipline allows students to develop self-control and self-regulation. Students can learn to resist temptations that might interfere with their learning, such as procrastination, social media distractions, or negative peer influences.

Discipline also allows students to take responsibility for their decisions and choices. It can teach valuable virtues such as patience, resilience, and perseverance. Therefore, every student who learns discipline can develop strong character traits that serve them well throughout their lives.

An ideal student is always enthusiastic and disciplined in his studies. He respects his teachers, fellow students and elders, and he always creates a positive environment with his charismatic personality. No student is equally intelligent, and that is why every student must be encouraged to become a better student, child and citizen.

Qualities Of An Ideal Student

An ideal student is one who is fully conscious of his duties and responsibilities. He paves the way for the younger generations. The students of today are the leaders of tomorrow. A nation can progress if the students have high ideals before them. A student who scores high marks, is not necessarily an ideal student. He may set a new record in the school but can prove to be a total failure in his real life. An ideal student should be an embodiment of simple living and high thinking. He is fearless and bold enough to face the trials and tribulations of life.

An ideal student lives in accordance with the rules of conduct and discipline. This is the time of life when the foundation of character is laid. It has aptly been said that if wealth is lost, nothing is lost; if health is lost, something is lost; and if character is lost everything is lost.

A student without any sense of discipline, is like a ship without a rudder. It sails adrift and never reaches the harbour. He must follow the rules of the school and ought to obey the orders of his teachers. He should select his friends intelligently and wisely. He must be fully conscious to ensure that no evil tempts him. He knows very well that a single rotten apple spoils the whole basket.

An Ideal Student Essay

An ideal student knows that he owes a lot to his parents. He never forgets to look after them when he enters his adult life. He is a servant of humanity. He shares the worries and problems with the members of his family. He takes keen interest in social service. He should be active in finding out solutions to various problems prevalent in the society.

Our country needs such students who have muscles of iron and nerves of steel. They should be able to dive deep into the secrets and mysteries of the universe. They should be determined to do their duty even at the risk of their own lives. Such students alone can help the nation in achieving prosperity and all round development.

They remain focused on their goals and continue working towards them until they are achieved.

These are just some of the qualities that make up an ideal student. If you possess these qualities, then you have what it takes to be successful in your studies.

What Makes an Ideal Student?

There is no one answer to this question as different students have different strengths and weaknesses. However, there are certain qualities that all ideal students share. They are hardworking, motivated, and always willing to learn. They also have a positive attitude and are able to work well with others.

Academic Performance

An ideal student is someone who gets good grades, is well-behaved in class, and takes an active interest in their education. They are the type of student that teachers love to have in their classroom.

Academic performance is important for several reasons. First, it is a reflection of how much a student knows and understands the material they are being taught. Good grades show that a student is able to comprehend and apply what they have learned. Secondly, academic performance is a predictor of future success. Students who do well in school are more likely to go on to college and have successful careers. Finally, good grades can lead to scholarships and other opportunities that can help students further their education.

There are a few things that students can do to improve their academic performance. First, they should make sure they understand the material they are being taught. If there are concepts that they do not understand, they should ask their teacher for clarification or get help from a tutor outside of class. Secondly, students should be organized and keep track of assignments and due dates. Having a system in place will help them stay on top of their work and avoid missing deadlines. Finally, students should take practice quizzes or exams to prepare for assessments. By doing this, they can identify any areas where they need additional review and focus their studying accordingly .

Non-Academic Performance

An ideal student is not only academically successful, but also excels in other areas. Here are some non-academic performance tips for students:

1. Get involved in extracurricular activities: Participating in activities outside of the classroom can help students develop leadership skills, build character, and learn to work well with others.

2. Serve the community: Giving back to the community is a great way for students to develop a sense of responsibility and civic engagement.

3. Be a good role model: As a student, you have the opportunity to set an example for your peers. Make sure you are setting a positive example by being respectful, hardworking, and kind.

Discipline and Responsibility

Every student must maintain a good discipline so that they can succeed academically. They must be responsible for their own learning and be able to take charge of their own lives. A good student will always be on time for class, do their homework and turn in assignments on time. They will also participate in class and pay attention to the teacher. Lastly, a good student will always show respect to their elders and peers.

Positive Attitude towards Learning

It is said that attitude is everything. This could not be more true when it comes to learning. A positive attitude towards learning is essential for a student to be successful.

A positive attitude towards learning means having a willingness to learn new things. It means being open-minded and willing to try new things. It means having a positive outlook on learning, even when it is challenging.

A positive attitude towards learning also means being motivated to learn. A motivated learner is one who is excited about learning new things and who is willing to put in the effort to learn. A motivated learner is also one who perseveres when faced with difficulties. They don’t give up easily and they keep trying even when it seems like they are not making progress.

So, how can you develop a positive attitude towards learning? Here are some suggestions:

Find something that you are interested in: If you are interested in what you are learning, you will be more likely to have a positive attitude towards it. When you find something that sparks your interest, pursue it and learn as much as you can about it.

Set goals: When you have specific goals that you want to achieve, it will help you stay focused and motivated. Having short-term and long-term goals will give you something to work towards and help keep you on track.

Create a positive environment: Learning should be fun! Create an environment that is conducive to learning,

Involvement in Extracurricular Activities

In an ideal world, every student would be fully involved in extracurricular activities. However, this is not always possible. Some students have to work to support their families or themselves, while others have health problems that prevent them from participating. Nevertheless, every student should try to get involved in at least one extracurricular activity.

There are many benefits to extracurricular involvement. First, it looks great on college applications. Colleges want to see that you are well-rounded and have interests outside of academics. Secondly, extracurriculars can help you make friends and develop social skills. If you are shy or introverted, getting involved in a club or sport can help you come out of your shell. Finally, extracurriculars can teach you important life skills such as time management and leadership.

Of course, you should not get involved in extracurricular activities just for the sake of it. Make sure to choose activities that you are genuinely interested in and will enjoy participating in. There is no point in forcing yourself to do something that you hate just for the sake of looking good on paper. With that said, there are plenty of extracurricular options out there so there is bound to be something for everyone. Get out there and get involved!

Responsible Use of Technology

It is responsible use of technology that helps students learn how to use devices in a way that does not interfere with their education. For example, using social media in moderation can actually enhance learning by providing a means of communication and collaboration outside of the classroom. Additionally, using technology to supplement learning can be beneficial when used appropriately. For example, looking up definitions online or watching instructional videos can help fill in gaps for students who are struggling with a concept. However, it is important to note that too much reliance on technology can actually impede learning. This is because students need to develop critical thinking skills in order to synthesize information from multiple sources. When students only rely on technology, they may not develop these important skills.

An ideal student is someone who strives for excellence and puts in the effort to achieve their goals. They are driven, organized, and strive to stay ahead of the curve while also being open-minded and respectful of others. It is important that schools foster an environment that encourages students to become ideal students by providing them with the right tools and resources they need to succeed. With a little bit of hard work, dedication, and support from teachers, parents, peers, and mentors; any student can become an exemplary role model for others in their school community.

Ideal student essay – 1 (200 words).

An ideal student is good in academics, takes part in extra-curricular activities, well-behaved and well-groomed. He is somebody everyone wishes to be like and wants to be friends with. Teachers are also fond of such students and they are appreciated wherever they go.

A student can be moulded into an ideal student with constant help from parents and teachers. Parents play a significant role in shaping a student’s life, as they watch their parents closely and try to imbibe their qualities. Parents should teach their children about discipline, hard work, responsibility and moral values, and everything that promotes the overall development of their children. Proper communication should be made by the parents with their children and guide them accordingly. This will generate confidence in them and help in shaping them into ideal students.

Teachers also play an important role in a student’s life. A teacher’s responsibility is not only educating children but also providing an all-round development to children. A teacher should have the ability to assess every student’s capability and mould them accordingly into ideal students.

An Ideal Student

Duties of an Ideal Student

9 best essays on ” an ideal student”, not difficult to be somebody.

It is not difficult to be something or somebody but it is difficult to be something or somebody particular.

In his famous play, “As You Like It,” Shakespeare presents the following picture of a schoolboy.

“The whining schoolboy, with his satchel And shining morning face, Creeping like a snail, Unwilling to school.”

Shakespeare’s picture of schoolboy

This is certainly not the picture of an ideal student. Moreover, Shakespeare was obsessed with boys, education only, as there was not much of female education even in England. But, now we have, even in India, girl students in large numbers and many of the girl students are outshining the boys in every field, particularly in the academic sphere.

An ideal student’s habits

An ideal student gets up early in the morning and takes regular exercise. He goes to school daily on time. He attends every period and never plays truant. He can never imagine being one of the drop-outs. He is very attentive in class and also does his homework regularly. He visits the library frequently but the canteen only for a short period when necessary.

In the classroom

An ideal student may be humorous and even if naughty, he is never so in the class. He never makes a noise in class. Nor does he ever ask foolish questions or raise trivial issues. But when the teacher says anything beyond his comprehension, he boldly stands up and requests the teacher to clarify his point. For this, and for his excellence in studies and other fields, he is always in the good books of his teachers. He does not feel humiliated or frustrated at the time of some failure. It is because he believes that the ultimate aim of man should be to serve humanity without being noticed by anyone. So, he does not believe in fame but tries to serve his brethren in pure and simple terms in a selfless way.

Service to mankind – his aim

An ideal student arranges blood donation camps and eye donation camps. He takes part in such national programming as pulse polio drops for children below five years and vaccination. He can also make it a routine to visit a hospital and serve the sick for an hour every Sunday.

Studies, sports, co-curricular activities, etc.

An ideal student takes part in cultural programmes being held in his school. He also takes part in some sports.

Helping the weak students

An ideal student helps the weak students. If he is a brilliant student, he may teach the weak students free of cost.

In conclusion, we can say that an ideal student is one of the most striking stars in the galaxy of the student community. Such a student respects his elders and teachers and hence becomes the apple of everybody’s eyes.

The Responsibilities of An Ideal Student

A student can never be educated until and unless he does not put his heart and soul into the cause of education. A student is a person who devotes himself to the pursuit of knowledge and learning. The pursuit of knowledge demands hard work and full devotion. Unfortunately, the students do not realize their duties.

In practical life, only those students come out with the best colours, who have acquired maximum knowledge.

An ideal student enjoys learning. He goes deeper and deeper in search of the knowledge. He is not a bookworm. He knows that a healthy body is necessary for a healthy mind. He takes interest in all the activities that promote his physical health. He goes to the playground with, the same pleasure and enthusiasm with which he studies in the library. An ideal student is not unsocial. He loves his fellow students and participates in all the collective activities.

The ideal student respects and honours his teachers. He knows the place of teachers who are opening the gate of glories for him. He is humble and obedient. The more he learns from his teachers, the more grateful he is to them. The more knowledge he gets, the more humble he becomes. He is always regular and punctual. He does not participate in adverse and negative activities. He confines himself to his studies and tasks. He does not waste his time in useless deeds. He is kind and generous.

Essay No. 04

An ideal Student

An ideal student is one who is fully conscious of his responsibilities. A student may be very good in his studies but he need not necessarily be an ideal student. They may even prove failures in their practical life. An ideal student should believe in simple living and high thinking. This was the idea of Mahatma Gandhi. He should be bold and fearless, full of discipline and high character. He should be discerning in choosing his company and should abide by the rules and orders of his teachers. He should also be dutiful towards his parents and elders. An ideal student is also an ideal member of society. He has a duty towards his country. He is a lighthouse for the guidance of the younger generation. He is a pride of the nation.

Essay No. 05

The very word: “Student” denotes a person fond of studies. But ‘studies’ do not mean just bookish knowledge, but real knowledge of men, society, nature, mind, etc. Such variegated knowledge can be obtained only by a person of strong mind and will, good heart, and sound health. So, the very connotation of being an ideal student is one’s keen interest in developing an all-round personality.

By going into detail, we can say that an ideal student has a thirst for knowledge. He has the curiosity to learn and understand new and new things about man and nature. He has a regular routine for doing everything. Thus he is regular and punctual. He gets up early in the morning, takes regular exercise, has his bath, and goes to his school and college in time. He devotes his time to studies whole-heartedly and is in the good books of his teachers whom he respects sincerely, as he respects his parents. He helps the weak students in their students and never makes fun of them. If others outdo him, he accepts their superiority with humility. He may have a healthy competition with them, but he is never jealous of them. Similarly, he plays one or the other game, but with a sportsman’s spirit.

An ideal student is very particular about his character and manners. He is truthful, honest, and frank. He does not find fault with others but tries to get rid of his own drawbacks if any. He has no evil habits like drinking, smoking, gambling, etc. He is a great patriot and is ready to die for his country. He knows that by making himself strong in body and mind, he is also serving the national cause, because, as Emerson says,

“Not gold but only men can make A nation great and strong.”

An ideal student is very studious. He knows that an idle man’s brain is the devil’s workshop. He does the right thing at the right time. He believes in his own sincere effort. He does not believe in underhand methods. For instance, copying in the examination can never be his motto. He is not only a voracious reader and a good player but also a good speaker and writer. He believes in bringing constant efficiency to his work. He has a positive and optimistic attitude towards life. Failures do not depress him, nor do successes turn his head. He has a balanced mind and personality.

Essay No. 06

An ideal student is one who is conscious of his responsibilities and duties and is an embodiment of virtues. He is ideal for his fellow students and is an asset to both his family and country. The motto of an ideal student is to live a simple life and think high. The one who has enough courage to face the trials and tribulations of life is a truly ideal student.

An ideal student should take a keen interest in the social services and the politics of his country. He should care for his family, as he owes them a debt, by looking after them in their old age. He should also respect his teachers and elders and should have some regard for all religions. He must believe in the unity and integrity of his country.

An ideal student is not only a bookworm but also understands the value of keeping good health by playing games and taking part in extracurricular activities.

Moreover, he observes discipline and never takes part in rallies, strikes, or demonstrations. He selects his friends wisely. An ideal student is always ready to live up to high values in life.

What to avoid in college application essays | College Connection

ideal student for essay

An important part of the Common Application, which is accepted by more than 1,000 colleges, is the personal essay. Students are given six options as prompts, as well as a seventh option which is to share an essay on a topic of choice.  So, students can write about anything at all.

The essay is an integral part of the application, as it is typically viewed by all the schools to which a student applies.  It is the one section where students have the opportunity to share what is unique about them and what qualities they will bring to their future college community.

To make their essay stand out, students should avoid some common pitfalls.

Do not cheat. That means students should not turn to ChatGPT or to another person  to write their essay. This should go without saying but, sadly, it does need to be said. College admissions officers know what the “voice” of a teenager sounds like, and that’s exactly what they’re looking for.

More: Top colleges where 'B' students are accepted | College Connection

Do not write about mental health issues. Although many young people, as well as those in every age group, deal with such issues, it is important not to share that information. Due to privacy laws, colleges are not able to contact parents if students struggle with depression, substance abuse, or any other troubling behavior. Therefore, students should not raise a red flag, or they will most likely find their applications in the “rejected” pile.

Do not be redundant. One’s personal essay is not the place to itemize the extracurricular, volunteer, and work experiences that are all included in the Activities section of the Common App. If there is one activity that dominated a student’s high school experience and is particularly compelling, it can be the topic of the essay. But students must elaborate on how they were profoundly impacted by their engagement.

More: How where you live affects your college admissions chances | College Connection

Do not recycle successful essays that were submitted by prior applicants. Often, students turn to the multitude of articles showcasing essays written by students who were admitted to Ivy League and other elite institutions. What worked for a prior student will not be effective for another as it’s not their story. It’s vital for students to share their genuine story using their authentic voice.   The key to writing a thoughtful, introspective essay is to start early, carefully consider the story you want to share, and then do so in your very own style.

RNC Montage Nods To Viral Racist Incident In Celebration Of Anti-'Woke' College Students

Phillip Jackson

Social Justice Reporter

People arrive at Fiserv Forum for the Republican National Convention Thursday in Milwaukee.

A clip of white college students mocking a Black woman was included in a video montage praising anti-“woke” college students at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday.

The original video , which was filmed at a pro-Palestinian protest at the University of Mississippi, went viral this spring. In it, a white male counterprotester mocks a Black woman by making monkey sounds, while others gesture and yell in her direction.

The clip included in the montage did not show anyone making obscene or racist gestures but was easily recognizable as being from the high-profile incident, which was widely condemned.

“Not all college students have gone woke. They should be celebrated,” the narrator says in the RNC video.

Neither the Trump campaign nor a spokesperson for the RNC responded to HuffPost’s request for comment.

University chancellor Glenn Boyce said in a statement at the time that the students’ actions displayed “hostility and racist overtones.”

“As a public institution, we are committed to supporting the rights of our students, faculty, and employees to express their views in a respectful manner and to assemble peacefully as guaranteed by the First Amendment,” he said. “However, some individuals at the demonstration acted in ways that conflict with our university’s values.”

One of the students was kicked out of his fraternity following the incident, Mississippi Free Press reported . The university also launched a conduct investigation into an unnamed student after the protest, according to Time .

Biden campaign spokesperson Sarafina Chitika told HuffPost that the video shown at the RNC pushed further division.

“Donald Trump promised unity at his convention. Instead, he delivered bigotry, division, and straight-up racism that turned dog whistles into bullhorns,” Chitika said. “The video elevated by Trump and his RNC is beneath the office of the President, and it’s proof that their empty pandering to voters of color is nothing more than lip service to paper over decades of racism.”

Turnitin's AI Detection: What You Need to Know

Turnitin's AI Detection: What You Need to Know

Students and teachers are facing new challenges with AI in education. Tools like the Turnitin AI checker have been created to help keep schoolwork honest. This AI checker, which started in April 2023, has gotten much attention from students and teachers.

Let's look at what Turnitin says: They think their AI detector can spot computer-written text 98% of the time. That's a big claim. But here's something interesting - it's not just looking for ChatGPT-3 anymore. This tool tries to find writing from many different AI models, even the newer ChatGPT-4.

How does this tool actually work? And can we trust it? What AI detector does Turnitin use? If you're a student worried about your work being wrongly marked as AI or a teacher trying to keep things fair, it's essential to understand this tool. Let's learn more about how Turnitin finds AI-written work.

How Does Turnitin Detect AI?

The Turnitin AI detector uses intelligent ways to spot AI-written text. It doesn't just look for easy-to-spot patterns. Instead, it uses complex math, machine learning, and language study to find writing from AI tools.

Here's how it works:

  • It breaks the text into smaller parts, usually a few hundred words each.
  • Each part gets a score between 0 and 1. 0 means a human probably wrote it, and 1 means AI probably wrote it.
  • It combines all these scores to guess how much of the whole text was written by AI.

What ai checker does Turnitin use, you ask? Well, Turnitin's system is trained to notice language that's typical of Large Language Models (LLMs). For example, it looks for word-choice patterns that match how AI models predict the next word in a sentence based on what they've learned.

Is Turnitin AI Detector Accurate?

Is Turnitin ai detector accurate? Turnitin says its AI writing detection model is correct up to 98% of the time. That sounds really good, but let's consider it carefully. No AI detection tool is perfect, and that includes Turnitin.

Here's an important detail: Turnitin tries to keep its mistakes under 1% for papers with more than 20% AI-written content. This means that for every 100 papers indeed written by humans, less than one should be wrongly marked as AI-written. That's good news, but it also shows that mistakes can happen.

Think about this: In a class of 200 students, up to two might be wrongly accused of using AI. While this doesn't happen often, it can cause serious problems. That's why it's essential to use the Turnitin AI checker as a helpful tool, not the final decision-maker.

Turnitin keeps testing its system to improve it. Sometimes, while trying to avoid marking human work as AI, it might miss some AI-written text. It's tricky to balance catching AI content and not unfairly marking human work.

AI Writing Models Identified by Turnitin

When asked "can Turnitin detect AI?" the answer is yes — but with some limits. The system was first trained to find content written by models like ChatGPT-3 and ChatGPT-3.5 and their variations.

Turnitin has also been tested with ChatGPT-4 (especially ChatGPT Plus) and says it can usually detect its output. However, as AI technology quickly changes, the system needs constant updates to keep up with new models.

It's important to know that Turnitin currently only works with English texts. This means it's good for schools mainly dealing with English papers, but it won't work for writing in other languages.

Making Sense of Turnitin's AI Results

Understanding what Turnitin's results mean is important for both teachers and students. The AI writing detection indicator shows a percentage, but what does this number tell us?

This percentage shows how much of the submitted text is likely written by AI. But there's a catch: it's based on 'qualifying' text. This means it analyzes normal sentences but not lists or bullet points.

Let's look at an example. Imagine a 2000-word essay. If 500 words are in bullet points or other special formats, Turnitin's AI detector will only look at the remaining 1500 words. If it says 30% is AI-generated, that's actually 30% of the 1500 words, not the whole essay.

It's also good to know that Turnitin scores each part of the text from 0 to 1. Scores from 0.5 to 1 are usually marked as AI-generated, depending on how they fit with the rest of the content. This careful approach helps make a more accurate judgment but also needs to be understood correctly.

Breaking Down the Similarity Report

While Turnitin's AI detection is impressive, it's different from its plagiarism checking. The Similarity Report is a separate tool that compares submitted work to Turnitin's big database of sources.

The Similarity score, shown as a percentage, tells how much of the submitted text matches existing sources. This is different from the AI detection score and helps to keep schoolwork honest in a different way.

Teachers need to understand the difference between these scores to avoid misunderstanding results and possibly making unfair accusations against students.

The Turnitin AI checker is a helpful tool, but it's imperfect. Yes, it's pretty good at finding AI-written text, but we must remember that no technology is flawless. The key is to use it wisely, along with our own judgment. After all, keeping schoolwork honest is about more than just running text through a checker.

Students applying to UK universities will not need to write personal statement essay

ideal student for essay

People applying to university will no longer have to write an essay for their personal statement, Ucas has confirmed.

Instead, those applying to start in 2026 will answer three guided questions.

The admissions body Ucas said it is to level the playing field for disadvantaged students.

The move comes after longstanding concerns that the existing personal statement favours advantaged students who can get more support.

It is hoped the structured questions will provide students from all backgrounds with a better understanding of the key information universities and colleges want to know about them when making admissions decisions.

Ucas data suggests the gap in university application rates between the most and least advantaged students has widened in the last year.

Currently, applicants set out their skills, experiences and their reasons for applying for a course in a text box – which can be up to 4,000 characters.

But from September 2025, students who are applying for 2026 entry to university or college courses will answer three questions:

Why do you want to study this course or subject?

How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences helpful?

Previous Ucas research found 79% of students felt the process of writing the personal statement was difficult to complete without support.

Ucas surveyed potential applicants about to start their personal statement, and found more than three-quarters prefer the new three-question format.

The answers to those questions will still be up to 4,000 characters long, combined.

The number of 18-year-olds in the UK applying to undergraduate courses has risen slightly this year.

But the application rate from the most disadvantaged backgrounds has fallen slightly to 25% in England, while rate for the most advantaged has increased to 61%.

Jo Saxton, chief executive at Ucas, said: “Today’s figures show that whilst positive progress has been made, there is still much to do.

“The changes to the personal statement, along with our recent fee waiver for students in receipt of free school meals, are all part of Ucas’s contribution to the sector-wide effort to ensure more people from disadvantaged backgrounds can benefit from the life-changing opportunity of higher education.

“During my time in schools, I saw first-hand how the personal statement can help students really clarify and articulate their ambition, but also how challenging it can be for those with less support.

“The new approach, with guided questions, aims to give greater confidence to those students, as well as their teachers when advising on how to secure their dream course.”

Kevin Gilmartin, post 16 specialist at the Association of Schools and College Leaders (ASCL), said: “This is a very welcome change. The current ‘text box’ approach is far too vague and has favoured students who are able to draw on support from family members that have previously been to university and submitted personal statements themselves.

“The switch to structured questions will provide much needed clarity to students about what information they should be including.

“These questions should also be of more use to admissions tutors than the old-style personal statements, which research has shown were barely being read in many cases.”

A report by the Higher Education Policy Institute (Hepi) think tank last year suggested that university applicants’ personal statements are read for just two minutes on average.

Lee Elliot Major, professor of social mobility at the University of Exeter, said: “This welcome reform strikes the right balance between a more structured approach to deter fabrication, while not limiting the opportunity for applicants to personalise their statement.

“I believe it is a significant step in making the university admissions system a little bit fairer for all applicants.”

UCAS to replace personal statement essay with three questions to help disadvantaged people

UCAS surveyed potential applicants about to start their personal statement and found more than three-quarters prefer the new three-question format.

Students applying for university through UCAS will be required to answer three questions under new plans to help support people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Under the current system, prospective students have been filling out a free-response essay for their personal statement, which can be up to 4,000 characters long.

But amid concerns the task helps advantaged people who can get support, the essay will, as of September 2025, be replaced with three mandatory questions.

The questions are:

• Why do you want to study this course or subject?

• How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

• What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences helpful?
