We humans have always professed to love these animals. Unfortunately, our love lasts only till the animal is able to work for us. As soon as he gets sick or old or injured, our love for it ends. Because mankind is a selfish race. And only loves somebody till he is hale, hearty, and useful. No sooner does a utility of an animal end than he is disposed to either off be killed by the butcher or to fend for itself on the roads or in the Wilderness. On its part animals have never been unkind to humans, examples of Alidrocles and the lion, Chetak, and Rana Pratap are some of the shining instances that have proved that animals are not beasts that they are portrayed to be.

Love & Compassion Towards Animals and its Impact on Our Lives

July 31, 2020 by Dikshi Gupta

essay on my love for animals

Do you own a pet? Did you ever have one? If not, do you love animals?

Do you know that Human beings are called Social Apes? The primary difference between a human being and an animal is that humans have a better sense of right and wrong; they can speak their hearts out. Have you ever experienced that feeling of kindness and love for animals? Love and bonding with an animal? It might either be with your pet or wild animals. When we talk about pets, people generally restrict themselves to dogs and cats, which is not true. People also tend to keep rabbits, birds, horses, turtles, fishes, etc. as pets.

In the past, animals were domesticated for specific use like dogs for tracking and house safety, and cats for killing rats. However, today, owning a pet is primarily because of bonding and love towards animals, as pets are considered a part of the family. Most of the pet owners would agree that their pets sleep in their room or their bed as well, in a few cases, at night; they celebrate their pet’s birthdays, or they grief their demise as it leaves an emptiness in their life and completes their pet’s last rites just like that of humans.

A Girl With A Labrador

Kindness and love for animals are closely associated with the goodness of one’s character. Also, one may confidently advocate that the one who is cruel and harsh to animals cannot be a good man. Developing connection and empathy with animals is a vital part of our social development as well. One of the findings in some research is that people with pets survive longer than people with human social support alone. When we play with a pet, oxytocin, a love hormone, is released in our body and has multifold benefits. Our interactions with animals can impact physical and emotional health, and the following are some of the importance of animal compassion in human lives-

  • It reduces stress.
  • It diminishes your aggression and increases generosity.
  • It improves mental health by reducing loneliness, depression, and anxiety.
  • It increases your trust, bonding, and attachment and overall socializing skills.
  • It Relaxes our autonomic system, which includes blood pressure, cortisol, and epinephrine levels.
  • It minimizes the possibility of cardiovascular diseases and increases longevity by lowering our BP and cholesterol.
  • It promotes empathy and compassion in people.

Girl Sleeping with Cat

However, owning a pet makes you their master but does not give you the right to abuse them. When you love animals and are kind to them, they repay that love exponentially. However, each of them has a different way of expressing it. They tend to express their affection commonly by licking, cuddling, tail-wagging, jumping in the air, offering their paws to shake hands, leaning against, and following their master. Whatever the case is, being compassionate towards animals makes you nothing but a kinder more gentle, and giving person.

Do you know why some people love animals so much?

Have you ever wondered why sometimes we love our pets more than our relatives or next-door neighbours? Does this astonish you that how two completely different species can make each other so happy? Or ever thought why should we be compassionate towards animals? It is because people disappoint and betray, but the animals will never do. A few reasons are as below-

  • Animals are a great companion. Dogs are often known as the best friend of a man. There is nothing comparable to the joy of coming home to see a companion who eagerly waits for you.

A Kid with his Dog

  • Pets love you unconditionally and without any expectations. They do not care if you are skinny or obese, rich or poor, black or white. All they demand is your presence, your love, your voice & touch, and nothing else.
  • Pets are loyal to you. In a world where humans can’t trust each other, you can blindly trust your pet as they cannot talk behind your back and never betray you.
  • Animals are the most supportive audience without any argument. You can always talk to them, confide in your darkest secrets with them. They are there all the time when you need them, and they ask no questions and pass no criticisms.
  • Pets bring you contentment . No matter how tiring or unpleasant a day you had, they will always be there to welcome you and make you feel pampered and relaxed.

A Happy Couple with their Dog and Cat

  • Animals are divine mirrors, and the more you love them, they will reflect the same. They do not understand evil or jealousy. They also do not judge you, unlike humans.
  • Animals share emotions. They can laugh when you laugh, cry when you cry, and feel distressed when their master is sad.
  • Animals also help lonely people to discover a sense of meaning or purpose in their lives by filling a void.
  • Even when you do not treat your pets well, they still come to you and teach you forgiveness, love, empathy towards them, and other humans as they are increasingly becoming desensitized towards others.
  • Pets bring you closer to Mother Earth and let you stay connected to your roots. When we watch wild animals in their territory, it reminds us to be humble about our strength and dominance.

A Man With His Dog.

As they say, ‘A part of our soul remains unawakened until we have loved an animal.’ So, having a pet can be an incredibly fulfilling and rewarding experience. It comes with great responsibility and is a privilege too. It will take nothing away from you to be kind to an animal. Instead, it will give you all their love and affection. Loving animals will make you rich beyond measure, despite the few possessions or little money you have. However, love towards animals is not just restricted to household animals if you do not have an animal as a pet, you can show your love by feeding the hungry stray animals or helping the injured or sick animals by contacting animal welfare agencies to provide them shelter and treatment.

A Happy Family

To conclude, I believe being compassionate towards animals will make more room for compassion among people, weaving more empathy, and fill us with respect, dignity, and love for others. Make sure the next time when you look into an animal’s eyes, you do not see an animal. You should see a living being, a friend, a soul, and a companion.

Why is your heart #ForTheAnimals? Check out these activists’ inspiring stories

Spending time with different species, getting to know their unique personalities, and learning their stories can change our entire perspective on animals. Our supporters shared what first inspired them to spread kindness and compassion for animals.

essay on my love for animals

E very day, we’re inundated with messages telling us that humans are superior to animals—to the point where it’s perfectly legal for humans to subject animals to horrific forms of cruelty and violence. But, we don’t have to accept this idea. Instead, as we learn more about the different species who share our world, we can choose to treat animals with care and compassion.

Around the world, people show their passion for helping animals in different ways—whether it’s raising awareness for the benefits of leaving animals off your plate and going vegan, or [taking to the streets]( https://thehumaneleague.org/article/disrupt-costco-headquarters "Changemakers disrupt "business as usual" at Costco headquarters") to protest against the ways companies exploit animals. But, no matter how they take action for animals, all of these changemakers have one thing in common: they’re guided by an unwavering commitment to creating a better world for animals.

We asked our community what first inspired them to make a difference for animals, and their stories touched our hearts and minds. Read their stories to learn how a little bit of compassion can change the lives of humans and animals alike.

Why you're for the animals

Because chickens are friends, not food.

I always loved birds and animals. 12 years ago, I read a newspaper story that told the story of a terrified pig at a slaughterhouse being beaten with a metal bar as it tried to climb a wall to escape. I was horrified. No animal should ever be made to suffer like that and with the story about slaughterhouse workers mistreating animals. I put my plate down and went vegan immediately. I had never eaten chicken as a child. My folks had chickens and they were my friends! There are so many products that are cruelty-free in supermarkets now so if you love animals, don't eat them.

Moira Brabender

Because we should love every species—not just dogs and cats.

When I sit with my dog and cat and see their personalities and know how they feel love and pain and I think of those who are tortured and caged up, it breaks my heart. The realization that these forgotten animals feel pain, have personalities and families just like humans and yet are treated like nothing. I have to fight for them because they deserve love and respect and to live in a world without pain and neglect.

Because cows can give us kisses .

I was 16 years old, walking down a road in Puerto Rico when a cow came up behind me and licked me. I thought the cow was kissing me. In retrospect, she was just trying to lick the sweat from my back, but at age sixteen I thought it was a kiss. At that moment, I was determined never to eat meat again. I am a vegan, I love all.

Maureen Vidal

Because animals aren’t commodities .

I first became aware of the atrocities that take place every day on factory farms through PETA and other animal welfare groups, and realized that we don’t see farm animals as animals at all, but only as commodities for our use, without regard to their extreme fear and suffering.

Marilyn V. Ridley

Because one book can change your entire perspective on animals.

I read Peter Singer's book Animal Liberation over 33 years ago and it changed me in an instant. I was always an animal lover. As a child I picked up worms from the sidewalk where they were drying up and put them back in the grass. I argued with the nuns in first grade who told me I could not love a dog. I told my anatomy teacher in nursing school I could not and would not dissect a cat. He said as long as I could pass the lab final I didn't have to do it. I went vegetarian immediately upon reading Animal Liberation . That also involved what brand of paper towels I bought, what cosmetics I used (cruelty-free), and what clothes I wore—no more wool or leather. Going vegan was a work in progress and I finally did so this year after being more active with signing petitions and sending emails for the animals and posting those on my Facebook newsfeed.

Mary Helen Barletti

Because animals belong in the garden, not on your plate.

I adopted a lop eared bunny rabbit, two years ago. I watched him hopping and running around my garden. As I watched him, and loved him, I decided I could no longer fool myself into believing I was a rescuer of animals, as I had animals on my plate. That's why I stopped eating meat. I'm now en route to being vegan. Yay!

Julie Alicia Witherow

Because one friend can set you on the right path for life.

Pizza place. 1986. I was eating pepperoni slices and asked my friend Chuck about his choice of pizza. He replied, "I like animals so I don't eat them." I knew that was the path for me so I started walking it, and never looked back.

Michael Chutich

WAM7731

Because every mother pig in a gestation crate deserves to feel the sun on her face.

I was already plant-based, but the moment I became vegan was watching a labrador retriever roll around in the grass. I visualized a mother pig incarcerated her whole life in a small cage, who would never feel the pure joy of rolling in the grass and feeling the sun on her face. I resolved then and there that for the rest of my life I would do everything I could do to make sure every animal lives safe, free and happy.

Karen E. Rubio

Because it’s not just about us, it’s about the animals .

I have been vegetarian for forty years. It was all about me, what I liked and didn’t like, and my health. With the help of Veganuary, I became vegan four years ago. One of the videos Veganuary shared was about The Humane League. Now it is no longer about me, it is about the animals. Veganuary and The Humane League revealed that epiphany. Ending the abuse of animals raised for food, that is the ultimate vision.

Janice E. Spencer

Dog with pig hero

Because speciesism is wrong.

When I actually realized the term “speciesism,” my heart ached for those who cannot stand up for their right to live. I owe my vegan journey to The Humane League. THL is the reason why I choose veganism!

Zakia Z. Rahman

Because humans aren’t superior to animals.

I have always had a kinship with animals. As I have grown older and been exposed to their plight on every continent in every corner of the world, visited upon them by humans, I have been increasingly adamant in my advocacy for them. We are not, by and large, the superior beings we claim to be, and in many ways, they are superior to us.

Randall K. Foreman

Because Bambi made us all cry.

I have known that I was for animals since the day I was born. Truly. I hurt mentally and physically when I hear of any cruelty. YES, I was one of the many who cried at Bambi!

Pam Lightfoot

Katie's Story

Because chickens deserve better .

Vegetarianism goes far back on my mother's side of the family. I've been surrounded by vegetarians for my whole life (except for my dad's side of the family). My sister always told me, "Their death is painless." I didn't budge and kept convincing her to become vegetarian. Then I discovered this site one day. I read "Chickens Deserve Better" and saw the picture. It still haunts me. I will continue being a prideful vegetarian. I will make an impact with The Humane League.

Are you for the animals, too?

Feeling inspired? If you’re for the animals, you’ll be in great company in our Changemaker community. Every day, we work together to end the cruelty of factory farming and build a kinder future for animals. Take action with us now.

Feature image of Short Essay on My Favourite Animal

All animals are amazing but my favourite animal is the dog. Dogs are very loyal and make great pets. They love their owners and protect them from dangers. Dogs are largely carnivorous and eat meat, bones, organs, and some plant-based food.

Dogs are closely related to wolves, coyotes, and foxes and were domesticated by man thousands of years ago. They served as companions during hunts as well as protectors and guards. Today, dogs are mostly kept as pets at home and are treated as family members. However, there are many dogs who live miserable lives on the streets and are uncared for. We must take care of dogs and be kind to them.

Short Essay on My Favourite Animal Cat in 200 Words

I love all animals but my favourite animal is the cat. Cats are small and cute. They have tiny paws, sharp claws, and a furry body and tail. They have beautiful bright eyes which glow in the dark. They are commonly found in colours like black, white, brown, ginger, and orange.

There are more than 60 different varieties of cats. Cats are carnivorous mammals and love to eat different types of fish like tuna and salmon. They also eat meats like chicken, turkey, beef, some whole-grain foods, and eggs. In the wild, they are known to catch rats, mice, lizards, snakes, and other small animals for food.

Cats know how to take care of themselves and don’t demand much attention from their owners. Hence, they make great pets for people who work full time and live in small apartments. Cats love their freedom and space but they also love their owners.

They will always be there to cheer you up when you need them. They love to purr and rub against their owners to show them their affection. Many pet cats bring dead mice, twigs, and other things that they like to their owners as a token of appreciation. Each cat has a unique personality and they always make their humans happy.

Short Essay on My Favourite Animal Lion in 400 Words

All animals are unique and amazing in their own ways. I love them all but my favourite animal is the lion. Lions are wild animals and their natural habitat includes scrublands, grasslands, savannahs, and rocky hills. They were historically found in many places around the world but now, due to loss of habitat and illegal hunting activities, they are mostly found in zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, and reserves. However, they can still be found in the wild in Africa as well as in the Gir forest in Gujarat, India.

Lions are majestic animals and are known as the ‘King of the jungle’. There are many different subspecies of lions, like Asiatic lions, Barbary lions, Congo lions, Transvaal lions, and African lions. Male lions have a beautiful signature mane around their neck and are much larger than the females of the same species. Male lions are known to act as the protectors of the pride while the females do all the hunting.

Pride is a family unit of lions that may contain a few lions, a dozen or so lionesses, and their adolescent and young ones. Each pride has its own territory and lions mark and defend these areas by roaring and scent-marking. These territories are fiercely defended against intruding lions and male lions may sometimes get into huge fights over their territories.

Lions usually prey on medium to large animals like zebras, antelopes, hippopotamuses, and buffaloes but they can also kill and eat smaller or larger animals, depending on the need. They are also known to eat animals killed and left by other predators. Lionesses stalk their prey from nearby cover and then leap and lunge at its neck, biting and strangling it until it is killed. Members of the pride then come forward to feed on the kill. An adult lion can eat about 34 kilograms of meat at once.

Lions usually breed once every year in captivity but in the wild, they breed once every two or three years. Lion cubs are born with dark spots on their fur coat which fade away as they mature. They can follow their mother after 3 months and can participate in hunting after 11 months.

However, they still need assistance and can not survive on their own before two years of age. The cubs become adults at about three to four years of age and while most female cubs become members of their mother’s pride, male cubs are forced out and become nomads.

Lions are incredible animals and have always intrigued me. They are truly the ‘kings’.

In the session above, I have written three essays on three different animals. You can choose any of those according to your requirements. I have also tried to write the essays in a very simple language that every student can easily understand. My Favourite Animal Essay

Our favourite animals are those that we thoroughly love and adore. They are indeed the ones whom we admire for their appearance, behaviour, and traits. We enjoy reflecting on and discussing them. Animals display their affection in various ways, just like people do. Here are a few sample essays on “My Favourite Animal”.

My Favourite Animal Essay

100 Words Essay On My Favourite Animal

Cats are the most popular pet in families nowadays. Since they are so adorable, cats are my favourite animal. My cat is named Bella, and I like her black and white fur, tiny paws, and adorable tail. We are made to love them even more by their little glittering eyes. When Bella was only three months old, we took her in as a stray cat. Bella likes being around us even if she does not seek much attention. She likes to eat meat and various fish, with tuna being her favourite.

She comes running to me as soon as I return from school and begins licking my hands. She understands my gloomy state and keeps sitting next to me, acting as if she is trying to comfort me. She has a special way of showing affection.

200 Words Essay On My Favourite Animal

Animals are beloved of humans. One of my innermost desires is to have a pet. Pets serve as family members as well as bring joy to their people.

Why I Love Rabbits | Rabbits are my favourite animal. The pleasure of keeping rabbits as pets is in their beauty. Long ears, silky fur bodies, and jittery noses are some of their features. Rabbits also love to bite on anything and everything. They appear even cuter with their small mouths and typical chewing patterns. Fresh produce, grass, and other fruits like pineapple are some of their favourites. They like vegetables the most.

My Pet ‘Sniff’ | My pet is a rabbit named Sniff. She is white. It was a gift from my uncle. Her paws have borders that are brown, and have lovely red eyes. She is enthusiastic. After school, I meet her when I am back home, and we play. She likes coriander leaves, so when I first get awake in the morning, I feed her some. She occasionally approaches me and climbs up on my bed before I even open my eyes. I cuddle my rabbit, Sniff, and cherish my bunny beyond all others as she is my best buddy.

500 Words Essay On My Favourite Animal

Dogs are my favourite animals. Dogs are favourite animals of a lot of people, so it is common to find them kept as pets in homes. The loyalty of dogs to humans has been proven. Dogs, in my opinion, are better at understanding human emotions than other human beings. In general, dogs are wonderful friends and are incredibly devoted to us humans. They are appropriately referred to as “man’s best friend” for this reason.

Characteristics Of Dogs

Following are some general characteristics of dogs:-

The physical characteristics of dogs include four legs, two eyes, two ears, one nose, and one tail.

They come in a variety of sizes and forms, and their teeth can consume both normal food and flesh.

Doberman, German Shepherd, Labrador, and Golden Retrievers are just a few of the various breeds of dogs. Several of these breeds are intelligent and smart.

Dogs can be any one of a wide range of colours, including white, grey, brown, black, and spotted.

Dogs As Companions

Playtime with my dog is something I really enjoy. My dog and I regularly go on walks, and anytime I am upset, he comes to sit by my side and cheers me up with his adorable eyes.

The fact that dogs never hurt young children and instead adore them without condition is one of the wonderful behaviours I have observed in dogs. Even yet, they defend them against damage of any kind. Our pet friends are dependable companions that lessen our sense of isolation. They are sympathetic and empathic with us. Both as guardians and buddies, they are ideal. They are great learners since they pick up a lot of knowledge when they are trained and perform tasks in the same manner.

The police and other investigation agencies often use dogs for helping them solve mysteries and investigate.

Bones, meat, fish, and various organs are typical foods that my dog eats. Grains, vegetables, and milk are additional options. If dogs are domesticated, they should be offered a healthy diet.

Dogs’ Faithfulness

The dog is believed to be a dedicated and devoted creature. For their owner, they are loyal and loving. In the same vein, I would like to cite an example.

My Neighbourhood Dog | There was a German Shepherd dog in my locality. He was named Simba. The dog sensed the robbery that occurred in my neighbour’s home six months prior and began howling to alert the family. He did his best. Regrettably, he was seriously hurt. The fact that he continued in their fight even after suffering injuries and the robbers allegedly escaped the house was reported in the papers the following day. This shows great bravery. The way a dog stood up for someone, not even man could.

Love For Stray Dogs | I adore dogs, but it does not imply I only love dogs that have been petted. I love and care for stray dogs as much. Being unable to communicate their hunger or distress, animals nearby should be taken care of. Because of this, we should respect and care for the animals in our vicinity and show responsibility. They are an integral part of our environment.

Why I Love Dogs

Dogs are loyal and protective, always standing by their owners. They are smart, understanding commands and gestures. Dogs are also great companions, providing comfort and company.

The Joy of Having a Dog

Having a dog is like having a best friend who’s always happy to see you. Dogs bring joy and happiness, making our lives more beautiful. They teach us about unconditional love and loyalty.

In conclusion, dogs are my favourite animals due to their loyalty, intelligence, and companionship. They truly are man’s best friend.

250 Words Essay on My Favourite Animal Dog

The dog, often hailed as man’s best friend, has been the most loyal and affectionate animal to humans for thousands of years. My favourite animal, the dog, is not just a pet but a family member, offering companionship, emotional support, and even protection.

Symbol of Loyalty and Devotion

Dogs are renowned for their loyalty and devotion. They are capable of forming deep emotional bonds with their human caretakers, exhibiting an unparalleled level of loyalty. This is not merely an anthropomorphic interpretation of their behaviour; scientific studies have shown that dogs can experience similar emotions to humans, including love and attachment.

Intelligence and Trainability

Another reason why dogs are my favourite animal is their intelligence and trainability. Dogs are capable of learning a wide range of commands, tricks, and tasks, making them extremely adaptable. They are used in various fields such as search and rescue, therapy, and even in detecting diseases like cancer.

Emotional Support

Dogs provide emotional support, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Their unconditional love and companionship can significantly improve mental health. Dogs have been used successfully in therapy settings, helping people cope with a range of mental health issues.

In conclusion, dogs are not just pets but companions, protectors, and even healers. Their loyalty, intelligence, and ability to provide emotional support make them my favourite animal. They enrich our lives in countless ways, giving us love, companionship, and a sense of purpose.

500 Words Essay on My Favourite Animal Dog

The animal kingdom is a vast and diverse realm, teeming with a myriad of species, each unique in its own way. Among all, the dog, often referred to as ‘man’s best friend’, stands out as my favorite animal. This essay explores the reasons behind my fondness for dogs, focusing on their intelligence, loyalty, and their role as companions.

One of the primary reasons I admire dogs is their intelligence and trainability. Dogs have been proven to understand human emotions and gestures, often responding in ways that showcase their cognitive abilities. They can be trained to perform complex tasks, from fetching items to assisting the police and military. Dogs’ intellectual capabilities are not merely limited to obeying commands; they also exhibit problem-solving skills, memory, and even a sense of time. This cognitive prowess makes dogs not just pets, but partners in various human activities.

Loyalty and Emotional Connection

Dogs are renowned for their loyalty, a trait that has been celebrated in numerous tales and anecdotes throughout history. This loyalty extends beyond simple companionship; dogs often form deep emotional connections with their human counterparts. They exhibit a unique empathy, sensing human emotions such as joy, sadness, and stress, and responding in kind. This emotional bond is perhaps why dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years and continue to hold a special place in many households.

The Role of Dogs as Companions

Dogs serve as more than just pets; they are often seen as members of the family. Their playful demeanor and unconditional love provide emotional support and companionship, which can significantly improve the quality of life for their owners. Dogs are known to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, promote social interaction, and even improve physical health through the encouragement of regular exercise. Their companionship extends beyond the home, as dogs also serve crucial roles in therapy, from aiding individuals with physical disabilities to providing comfort in hospitals and care homes.

In conclusion, my fondness for dogs stems from their intelligence, loyalty, and the companionship they offer. Their ability to understand and respond to human emotions, coupled with their trainability, makes them an integral part of human society. Their unwavering loyalty and deep emotional connection make them more than just pets; they are family. The companionship they provide not only enhances the quality of life for their owners but also plays a crucial role in therapy and care. Indeed, the dog is not just my favorite animal but also a testament to the profound bond that can exist between humans and animals.

Essay: Love of Animals

Samples / Social Issues March 31, 2011

Sample Essay

Words 1,320

Another type of love that leads to harm is the love of animals. It is better than the love of things because an animal understands your passions as a human being and has the capability of returning love too. Nevertheless, this type of love is still not as great as the love of human beings. The dilemma of loving animals is that it is a one dimensional relationship. It is dictated by you and you define the creature because you love it so much you expect it to become human which in essence is inhumane because after all, an animal as an animal, it is not human. Matthias Bier talks about the treatment of animals in the book Violent God-image: An Introduction to the Work of Eugen Drewermann. (2004) Examples of inhumane treatment of animals not only have to do with animal testing or being non-vegetarian. Inhumanities upon animal consist of doing anything to an animal that tries to make it closer to a human being such as dressing it up like a human, giving it a bath with human shampoo, or giving your dog a pedicure. An animal’s true essence is to be in the wild or in whatever environment it comes from and any humanization that human beings impose on an animal ends up being torturous for the animal. Humans fail to realize that an animal might be tortured by being treated as a human. Your own conception of good is imposed on the animal whereas it might not be good for them. For example, although we might think it is nice to give our pets a shower in our bathtub the chemicals we use on our bodies might be harmful for them and cause allergic reactions.

Opinion It’s not so ‘terribly strange to be 70’

essay on my love for animals

I turned 70 today, a young age for an older person to be, but it is the oldest I have ever been by a long shot. It has been well over six decades since I learned in arithmetic how to carry the one, and the rest has sped by like microfiche.

One big juicy, messy, hard, joyful, quiet life. That’s what my 70 years have bequeathed me.

In my teens, already drinking and drugging, I didn’t expect to see 21, and at 21, out of control, I didn’t expect to see 30. At 30, I had published three books but, as a sober friend put it, was deteriorating faster than I could lower my standards.

Then at 32, I got clean and sober, the miracle of my life from which all other blessings flow. My son was born three years later. The apple fell close to the tree: My son went off the rails, too. He and his partner had a baby at 19, which had not been in my specific plans for him, but you know the old line: If you want to make God laugh, tell Her your plans.

The baby, soon to get his learner’s permit, turned out to be the gift of a lifetime. My son got clean and sober 13 years ago, and the three of us grew up together. Then after a long search, I met this brilliant, kind writer guy and, three days after I started getting Social Security, I married him. Yesterday, I published my 20th book, called “Somehow.” Today, when I woke up, I was 70. Seventy!

I think that I am only 57, but the paperwork does not back this up. I don’t feel old, because your inside self doesn’t age. When younger people ask me when I graduated from high school and I say 1971, there’s a moment’s pause, as if this is inconceivable and I might as well have said 20 B.C. That’s when I feel my age. But I smile winsomely because, while I would like to have their skin, hearing, vision, memory, balance, stamina and focus, I would not go back even one year.

My older friends and I know a thing or two.

In general, though, I know how little I know. This is a big relief.

essay on my love for animals

I know that my lifelong belief, that to be beyond reproach offers shelter and protection, is a lie. Shelter is an inside job, protection an illusion. We are as vulnerable as kittens. Love fends off the worst of it.

I know now that everyone is screwed up to some degree, and that everyone screws up. Phew. I thought for decades it was just me, that all of you had been issued owner’s manuals in second grade, the day I was home with measles. We are all figuring it out as we go. Aging is grad school.

I know a very little bit about God, or goodness, or good orderly direction. I am a believer, but I don’t trouble myself about ultimate reality, the triune nature of the deity or who shot the Holy Ghost. I say help a lot, and thanks, and are You kidding me??? Have You been drinking again, Friend?

I know about something I will call cloak hope, most obvious to me in the people who swooped in and helped me get sober in 1986, and swooped down again in 2012 for my child. In my case, an elderly sober woman named Ruby saw me in my utter, trembly hopelessness — afraid, smelly and arrogant; she swept in and took me under her wing. She wrapped her cloak around me and was the counternarrative to all I believed at 32, i.e., that I needed to figure things out, especially myself, and who to blame.

I know the beauty of shadows. Shadows show us how life can gleam in contrast. Sunshine might be dancing outside the window, but the wonder is in the variegation, with fat white clouds bunched up on the right casting shadows on the hills and gardens, and brushstrokes of gray clouds on the left and — most magical — the long narrow shawl of fog right across the top of the ridge. The day is saying, Who knows how the weather will morph, but meanwhile so much is possible. And that is life asserting itself.

I know life will assert itself. Knowing this means I have a shot at some measure of pliability, like a willow tree that is maybe having an iffy day.

I know everything is in flux, that all things will turn into other things. I am uncomfortable with this but less so than in younger years. Michael Pollan wrote, “Look into a flower, and what do you see? Into the very heart of nature’s double nature — that is, the contending energies of creation and dissolution, the spiring toward complex form and the tidal pull away from it.” So I don’t sweat feeling a little disoriented some days.

I have grown mostly unafraid of my own death, except late at night when I head to WebMD and learn that my symptoms are probably cancer.

I know and am constantly aware of how much we have all lost and are in danger of losing — I am not going to name names — and am awash with gratitude for lovely, funny things that are still here and still work.

I know how to let go now, mostly, although it is not a lovely Hallmark process, and when well-wishers from my spiritual community exhort me to let go and let God, I want to Taser them. But I know that when I finally tell a best friend of my thistly stuckness, the telling is the beginning of release. You have to learn to let go. Otherwise, you get dragged, or you become George Costanza’s father pounding the table and shouting, “Serenity now!”

I know that people and pets I adore will keep dying, and it will never be okay, and then it will, sort of, mostly. I know the cycle is life, death, new life, and I think this is a bad system, but it is the one currently in place.

I know I will space out and screw up right and left as I head out on this book tour, say things I wish I could take back, forget things, sometimes onstage, and lose things. I just will.

I recently went to Costa Rica, where my husband was giving a spiritual retreat, and I forgot my pants. My pants! And last month, I went to give a talk at a theater two states away and forgot to bring any makeup. I am quite pale, almost light blue in some places — think of someone from “Game of Thrones” with a head cold — and ghostly under bright lights. When I discovered this omission, I was wearing only tinted moisturizer, powder on my nose and light pink lip gloss.

I gave myself an inspiring pep talk on my inner beauty, the light within. And then I had a moment of clarity: I asked the person driving me to the venue to stop at CVS, where I bought blush and a lipstick that was accidentally brighter and glossier than I usually wear. I looked fabulous. Age is just a number when you still know how to shine. And I shone.

The Troubling Trend in Teenage Sex

A pile of bed linens on a night stand next to a bed.

By Peggy Orenstein

Ms. Orenstein is the author of “Boys & Sex: Young Men on Hookups, Love, Porn, Consent and Navigating the New Masculinity” and “Girls & Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape.”

Debby Herbenick is one of the foremost researchers on American sexual behavior. The director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University and the author of the pointedly titled book “Yes, Your Kid,” she usually shares her data, no matter how explicit, without judgment. So I was surprised by how concerned she seemed when we checked in on Zoom recently: “I haven’t often felt so strongly about getting research out there,” she told me. “But this is lifesaving.”

For the past four years, Dr. Herbenick has been tracking the rapid rise of “rough sex” among college students, particularly sexual strangulation, or what is colloquially referred to as choking. Nearly two-thirds of women in her most recent campus-representative survey of 5,000 students at an anonymized “major Midwestern university” said a partner had choked them during sex (one-third in their most recent encounter). The rate of those women who said they were between the ages 12 and 17 the first time that happened had shot up to 40 percent from one in four.

As someone who’s been writing for well over a decade about young people’s attitudes and early experience with sex in all its forms, I’d also begun clocking this phenomenon. I was initially startled in early 2020 when, during a post-talk Q. and A. at an independent high school, a 16-year-old girl asked, “How come boys all want to choke you?” In a different class, a 15-year-old boy wanted to know, “Why do girls all want to be choked?” They do? Not long after, a college sophomore (and longtime interview subject) contacted me after her roommate came home in tears because a hookup partner, without warning, had put both hands on her throat and squeezed.

I started to ask more, and the stories piled up. Another sophomore confided that she enjoyed being choked by her boyfriend, though it was important for a partner to be “properly educated” — pressing on the sides of the neck, for example, rather than the trachea. (Note: There is no safe way to strangle someone.) A male freshman said “girls expected” to be choked and, even though he didn’t want to do it, refusing would make him seem like a “simp.” And a senior in high school was angry that her friends called her “vanilla” when she complained that her boyfriend had choked her.

Sexual strangulation, nearly always of women in heterosexual pornography, has long been a staple on free sites, those default sources of sex ed for teens . As with anything else, repeat exposure can render the once appalling appealing. It’s not uncommon for behaviors to be normalized in porn, move within a few years to mainstream media, then, in what may become a feedback loop, be adopted in the bedroom or the dorm room.

Choking, Dr. Herbenick said, seems to have made that first leap in a 2008 episode of Showtime’s “Californication,” where it was still depicted as outré, then accelerated after the success of “Fifty Shades of Grey.” By 2019, when a high school girl was choked in the pilot of HBO’s “Euphoria,” it was standard fare. A young woman was choked in the opener of “The Idol” (again on HBO and also, like “Euphoria,” created by Sam Levinson; what’s with him ?). Ali Wong plays the proclivity for laughs in a Netflix special, and it’s a punchline in Tina Fey’s new “Mean Girls.” The chorus of Jack Harlow’s “Lovin On Me,” which topped Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for six nonconsecutive weeks this winter and has been viewed over 99 million times on YouTube, starts with, “I’m vanilla, baby, I’ll choke you, but I ain’t no killer, baby.” How-to articles abound on the internet, and social media algorithms feed young people (but typically not their unsuspecting parents) hundreds of #chokemedaddy memes along with memes that mock — even celebrate — the potential for hurting or killing female partners.

I’m not here to kink-shame (or anything-shame). And, anyway, many experienced BDSM practitioners discourage choking, believing it to be too dangerous. There are still relatively few studies on the subject, and most have been done by Dr. Herbenick and her colleagues. Reports among adolescents are now trickling out from the United Kingdom , Australia , Iceland , New Zealand and Italy .

Twenty years ago, sexual asphyxiation appears to have been unusual among any demographic, let alone young people who were new to sex and iffy at communication. That’s changed radically in a short time, with health consequences that parents, educators, medical professionals, sexual consent advocates and teens themselves urgently need to understand.

Sexual trends can spread quickly on campus and, to an extent, in every direction. But, at least among straight kids, I’ve sometimes noticed a pattern: Those that involve basic physical gratification — like receiving oral sex in hookups — tend to favor men. Those that might entail pain or submission, like choking, are generally more for women.

So, while undergrads of all genders and sexualities in Dr. Herbenick’s surveys report both choking and being choked, straight and bisexual young women are far more likely to have been the subjects of the behavior; the gap widens with greater occurrences. (In a separate study , Dr. Herbenick and her colleagues found the behavior repeated across the United States, particularly for adults under 40, and not just among college students.) Alcohol may well be involved, and while the act is often engaged in with a steady partner, a quarter of young women said partners they’d had sex with on the day they’d met also choked them.

Either way, most say that their partners never or only sometimes asked before grabbing their necks. For many, there had been moments when they couldn’t breathe or speak, compromising the ability to withdraw consent, if they’d given it. No wonder that, in a separate study by Dr. Herbenick, choking was among the most frequently listed sex acts young women said had scared them, reporting that it sometimes made them worry whether they’d survive.

Among girls and women I’ve spoken with, many did not want or like to be sexually strangled, though in an otherwise desired encounter they didn’t name it as assault . Still, a sizable number were enthusiastic; they requested it. It is exciting to feel so vulnerable, a college junior explained. The power dynamic turns her on; oxygen deprivation to the brain can trigger euphoria.

That same young woman, incidentally, had never climaxed with a partner: While the prevalence of choking has skyrocketed, rates of orgasm among young women have not increased, nor has the “orgasm gap” disappeared among heterosexual couples. “It indicates they’re not doing other things to enhance female arousal or pleasure,” Dr. Herbenick said.

When, for instance, she asked one male student who said he choked his partner whether he’d ever tried using a vibrator instead, he recoiled. “Why would I do that?” he asked.

Perhaps, she responded, because it would be more likely to produce orgasm without risking, you know, death.

In my interviews, college students have seen male orgasm as a given; women’s is nice if it happens, but certainly not expected or necessarily prioritized (by either partner). It makes sense, then, that fulfillment would be less the motivator for choking than appearing adventurous or kinky. Such performances don’t always feel good.

“Personally, my hypothesis is that this is one of the reasons young people are delaying or having less sex,” Dr. Herbenick said. “Because it’s uncomfortable and weird and scary. At times some of them literally think someone is assaulting them but they don’t know. Those are the only sexual experiences for some people. And it’s not just once they’ve gotten naked. They’ll say things like, ‘I’ve only tried to make out with someone once because he started choking and hitting me.’”

Keisuke Kawata, a neuroscientist at Indiana University’s School of Public Health, was one of the first researchers to sound the alarm on how the cumulative, seemingly inconsequential, sub-concussive hits football players sustain (as opposed to the occasional hard blow) were key to triggering C.T.E., the degenerative brain disease. He’s a good judge of serious threats to the brain. In response to Dr. Herbenick’s work, he’s turning his attention to sexual strangulation. “I see a similarity” to C.T.E., he told me, “though the mechanism of injury is very different.” In this case, it is oxygen-blocking pressure to the throat, frequently in light, repeated bursts of a few seconds each.

Strangulation — sexual or otherwise — often leaves few visible marks and can be easily overlooked as a cause of death. Those whose experiences are nonlethal rarely seek medical attention, because any injuries seem minor: Young women Dr. Herbenick studied mostly reported lightheadedness, headaches, neck pain, temporary loss of coordination and ear ringing. The symptoms resolve, and all seems well. But, as with those N.F.L. players, the true effects are silent, potentially not showing up for days, weeks, even years.

According to the American Academy of Neurology, restricting blood flow to the brain, even briefly, can cause permanent injury, including stroke and cognitive impairment. In M.R.I.s conducted by Dr. Kawata and his colleagues (including Dr. Herbenick, who is a co-author of his papers on strangulation), undergraduate women who have been repeatedly choked show a reduction in cortical folding in the brain compared with a never-choked control group. They also showed widespread cortical thickening, an inflammation response that is associated with elevated risk of later-onset mental illness. In completing simple memory tasks, their brains had to work far harder than the control group, recruiting from more regions to achieve the same level of accuracy.

The hemispheres in the choked group’s brains, too, were badly skewed, with the right side hyperactive and the left underperforming. A similar imbalance is associated with mood disorders — and indeed in Dr. Herbenick’s surveys girls and women who had been choked were more likely than others (or choked men) to have experienced overwhelming anxiety, as well as sadness and loneliness, with the effect more pronounced as the incidence rose: Women who had experienced more than five instances of choking were two and a half times as likely as those who had never been choked to say they had been so depressed within the previous 30 days they couldn’t function. Whether girls and women with mental health challenges are more likely to seek out (or be subjected to) choking, choking causes mood disorders, or some combination of the two is still unclear. But hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation — judging by what research has shown about other types of traumatic brain injury — could be a contributing factor. Given the soaring rates of depression and anxiety among young women, that warrants concern.

Now consider that every year Dr. Herbenick has done her survey, the number of females reporting extreme effects from strangulation (neck swelling, loss of consciousness, losing control of urinary function) has crept up. Among those who’ve been choked, the rate of becoming what students call “cloudy” — close to passing out, but not crossing the line — is now one in five, a huge proportion. All of this indicates partners are pressing on necks longer and harder.

The physical, cognitive and psychological impacts of sexual choking are disturbing. So is the idea that at a time when women’s social, economic, educational and political power are in ascent (even if some of those rights may be in jeopardy), when #MeToo has made progress against harassment and assault, there has been the popularization of a sex act that can damage our brains, impair intellectual functioning, undermine mental health, even kill us. Nonfatal strangulation, one of the most significant indicators that a man will murder his female partner (strangulation is also one of the most common methods used for doing so), has somehow been eroticized and made consensual, at least consensual enough. Yet, the outcomes are largely the same: Women’s brains and bodies don’t distinguish whether they are being harmed out of hate or out of love.

By now I’m guessing that parents are curled under their chairs in a fetal position. Or perhaps thinking, “No, not my kid!” (see: title of Dr. Herbenick’s book above, which, by the way, contains an entire chapter on how to talk to your teen about “rough sex”).

I get it. It’s scary stuff. Dr. Herbenick is worried; I am, too. And we are hardly some anti-sex, wait-till-marriage crusaders. But I don’t think our only option is to wring our hands over what young people are doing.

Parents should take a beat and consider how they might give their children relevant information in a way that they can hear it. Maybe reiterate that they want them to have a pleasurable sex life — you have already said that, right? — and also want them to be safe. Tell them that misinformation about certain practices, including choking, is rampant, that in reality it has grave health consequences. Plus, whether or not a partner initially requested it, if things go wrong, you’re generally criminally on the hook.

Dr. Herbenick suggests reminding them that there are other, lower-risk ways to be exploratory or adventurous if that is what they are after, but it would be wisest to delay any “rough sex” until they are older and more skilled at communicating. She offers language when negotiating with a new partner, such as, “By the way, I’m not comfortable with” — choking, or other escalating behaviors such as name-calling, spitting and genital slapping — “so please don’t do it/don’t ask me to do it to you.” They could also add what they are into and want to do together.

I’d like to point high school health teachers to evidence-based porn literacy curricula, but I realize that incorporating such lessons into their classrooms could cost them their jobs. Shafia Zaloom, a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, recommends, if that’s the case, grounding discussions in mainstream and social media. There are plenty of opportunities. “You can use it to deconstruct gender norms, power dynamics in relationships, ‘performative’ trends that don’t represent most people’s healthy behaviors,” she said, “especially depictions of people putting pressure on someone’s neck or chest.”

I also know that pediatricians, like other adults, struggle when talking to adolescents about sex (the typical conversation, if it happens, lasts 40 seconds). Then again, they already caution younger children to use a helmet when they ride a bike (because heads and necks are delicate!); they can mention that teens might hear about things people do in sexual situations, including choking, then explain the impact on brain health and why such behavior is best avoided. They should emphasize that if, for any reason — a fall, a sports mishap or anything else — a young person develops symptoms of head trauma, they should come in immediately, no judgment, for help in healing.

The role and responsibility of the entertainment industry is a tangled knot: Media reflects behavior but also drives it, either expanding possibilities or increasing risks. There is precedent for accountability. The European Union now requires age verification on the world’s largest porn sites (in ways that preserve user privacy, whatever that means on the internet); that discussion, unsurprisingly, had been politicized here. Social media platforms have already been pushed to ban content promoting eating disorders, self-harm and suicide — they should likewise be pressured to ban content promoting choking. Traditional formats can stop glamorizing strangulation, making light of it, spreading false information, using it to signal female characters’ complexity or sexual awakening. Young people’s sexual scripts are shaped by what they watch, scroll by and listen to — unprecedentedly so. They deserve, and desperately need, models of interactions that are respectful, communicative, mutual and, at the very least, safe.
