How to Make Interesting Presentations for Software Projects .

No matter how good your website or app might be, if you cannot communicate its value to your client or employer, your hard work will be overlooked. Here's a guide on how to create interesting presentations for your next software project.

Know Your Presentation Audience

Don't start by just slapping a bunch of slides together. Instead take a moment and think about who you're going to present to. This might be your boss, a potential client or an interested crowd at a conference. Think about the background knowledge your audience will posses or what it might be missing out on. Reflect on their interests. Most of the time people are not attending presentations just because they like hearing you talk. So figure out what they're looking to get out of your presentation. This might be technical knowledge, inspiration as well as strategical or economical insights.

Besides knowing such on-topic aspects about your audience, it could also come in handy to have some general conditions on your mind. This might include the time your audience is willing to spend with you. Will your listeners be relaxed or are they in a hurry and barely able to attend your presentation? You don't want people to miss your key points because they already had to leave.

Define a Goal for Your Presentation

Now that you know the people you'll be talking to, you can figure out what to give them. What's the message you want to get across? What's the goal you're trying to achieve with your presentation? You might want to get support for your next software project. You'd like to get funding for building a website or app. Maybe you're trying to sell some software you've created. Or maybe you want to show the progress of your software project to your employer or client.

Defining a specific goal for presenting your software makes crafting the actual presentation a lot easier. At every step you can ask yourself whether some slide you're going to show or a certain thing you're going to say is beneficial for reaching that goal - if it's not, throw it out.

Defining Goal and Audience for Your Software Project Presentation

Outline A Story

Creating a story doesn't mean you have to write a screenplay. Instead construct a cohesive outline for your presentation. I like doing this by creating some placeholder slides with certain keywords and topics. Make sure that every part of your presentation fits with the next one so that your listeners won't get lost.

I'm not a book author, but just like design has it's principles, storytelling has some as well. Start with a brief setup explaining what your presentation is all about and foreshadow where the story will be going. It's highly subjective whether a story is good. Relatability is a key factor for liking a story - that's why you researched your audience. Now you can carefully select on which parts you'd like to go into details.

All good stories have a twist. It's still a presentation so there might just not be a real twist to your topic. Still, what I mean by that is don't spill all your beans in the first five minutes. Try to intrigue the audience by leading up to something. That could be the demonstration of your software, some exciting feature or the results of a proof-of-concept trial.

Address obstacles you overcame along the way, but don't make yourself look bad by mentioning every mistake you made - that's not an interesting story, is it?

Slide Design

Don't get me wrong, I know that some people are that good at public speaking, their slides don't matter. Other times you might not even need slides and rather just stand there by yourself or with some other props. However, when presenting software projects, having some slides is usually a good idea because it's pretty difficult to convey designs and technical concepts with words only. Having off-putting slides though might still be worse than having none at all. Here are some tips that can go a long way.

Less Text, More Content

You've probably heard some arbitrary upper limit for bullet points to slap on a slide - like no more than four or five. The problem with this rule is how people apply it: they just move their remaining bullet points to the next slide.

You'll get out of this dilemma, if you stop thinking in bullet points. Instead focus on the goal of your presentation and design slides that'll help you reach it. Below you can see some layouts I like to use.

Layouts for Content-focused Slides

Replace text with graphics wherever possible. People are naturally more receptive for graphical representations. An ad-hoc diagram you create directly on the slide can convey much more than plain bullet points. It does so by the means of boundaries, grouping and connections.

When doing these kind of diagrams don't try to fit everything in them. Focus again on what kind of understanding you want to achieve. You can also leverage diagram standards like UML or BPMN, but keep in mind that not everyone knows these notations by heart. Some plain boxes and arrows can go a long way and it's better to have a simple diagram that's helping people instead of a complex one that's not.

If you've developed a website or app, or anything with a user interface really, you've probably got a lot to show. You can also include design iterations describing how you got to your final result. However, don't bore people by showing every single interface (or state of the same interface) there is.

It can also be illustrative to see a mockup of your project in action - like someone holding a phone with your app open or a laptop showing your website. This will display your product in a professional and realistic look allowing people to easily picture themselves using it.

You'll find mockup resources and templates on graphics marketplaces which you can then assemble using photo editing software like Photoshop.

Don't be afraid to sacrifice a whole slide to one word or number - the impact will be worth it. This could be the number of users you have, the revenue your app made or how many orders your software processed. You might also put a quote from some famous figure to give your statements more weight - though don't overdo it with that, rule of thumb: one quote max per presentation.

When you're showing images you never want to ask during presentation whether everyone can make out what's on it. Either zoom into the parts you're talking about or slice up the image.

Simple and Consistent

Limit yourself to a few font configurations consisting of font-family, font-size, font-style and color. This will give your presentation a clean look and provide consistency. Also, especially when working with little diagrams like shown above, try to work meaning into your color coding by using the same colors for roughly the same things.

Having a limited set of layouts can also be beneficial because it will allow viewers to know faster where they should be looking.

One thing I also sometimes like to do is picking an icons for each specific topic and use those consistently throughout the presentation. This could be a map when you're talking about how you planned things out or a target when it's about goals reached. If you keep to a handful different icons, you'll make these topics easily recognizable allowing you to spice up what would've otherwise been just text.

Templates & Resources

I often see people creating their presentation with a theme based on a popular movie or show. I'd advise you to refrain from doing so as you probably don't want to get into problems with copyright infringement when your slides or a video of your presentation end up on the web. Rather stay with unlicensed resources and give credit where credit is due.

Just because you think you're not very skilled at design doesn't mean your presentation has to look bad - there are templates for that! SlidesCarnival and Slidesgo are great places for free-to-use presentation templates. They list them by color, style and occasion enabling you to always find something that fits your project. They come with inspiring placeholder slides, pre-defined color schemes and a bunch of icons.

Showing your app or website in action or doing a live coding session is somewhat the holy grail of software presentation. They can leave a major impact but might seem a bit daunting. The key here is preparation and some practice. Figure out the conditions for your demo and prepare accordingly:

  • Will you have access to internet? Can your demo work without internet?
  • What kind of connections are available for the projector? Bring your own adapters if necessary.
  • Does your demo rely on external services (like some API) and what will you do if those services are not available?

When all falls apart skip the demonstration or, even better, have a pre-recorded video of it ready to show. This way you won't waste your precious presentation time and the audience's attention span on fixing your demonstration.

Also, for a professional impression, do some cleaning up. Clear your desktop of anything that's not related to the presentation. Close every program you don't need as you probably don't want to have delicate mail notifications during showtime. Hide the bookmarks bar of your browser not only to keep those from prying eyes but also to have more room when showing a website or web app.

Practicing Your Presentation

Practicing your presentation will not only make you more confident, you'll also know roughly how long it's going to take. Therefore don't rush while practicing because it's just practice .

You can write down some speaking notes but don't script your presentation to a point where it feels awkward. It's not the end of the world if you say something differently or forget to say it at all - after all a presentation is a live performance.

It can also be really helpful to have a test audience while practicing. This will make transitioning to a real audience much easier and you get valuable feedback early on. If there's no one available, you could still record yourself using your phone.

Knowing your audience, having a clearly defined goal and proper slides might also reduce stage fright, allowing you to have a good time when presenting your next software project. Getting your software release right is one of the key points of ensuring your application is a success. A successful app means lots of profits.

Release management is a relatively new but rapidly growing discipline within software engineering. As systems, software development processes, and resources become more distributed, they invariably become more specialized and complex.

Additionally, software products (especially web applications) are normally “never done” and often in a continual cycle of development, testing, and release process, often running on evolving platforms with growing complexity.

Shipping products from development to system test and user acceptance test often require dedicated resources to oversee the integration and flow of development, testing, deployment, and support.

In this article, aimed at professionals involved in software development projects, we explore successful release management best practices and some of these processes.  This article will be of interest to developers, test analysts, development and release managers, CTOs and IT operations team responsible for shipping software products.

Why Release Management

Let‘s explore just some of the reasons why you might want to adopt a more formal release management process for your software projects.

Manually deploying releases is painful and always contains an element of risk.  Introducing a formal release management removes a lot of the manual overheads associated with publishing and releasing software manually.

Consider for a minute, you‘re deploying an ASP.NET website, you may have environment-specific application settings in the web.config file (connection string and so on).  Naturally, these need to change each time a release is published.  

Configuration changes like these can be a pain to track manually as you promote your website through the release path.

Each time code is checked in by a developer, the CI suite can invoke a suite of unit tests, execute and analyze the code quality (as per standards defined by the Team) and report this back, almost immediately, to the developer that performed the code check-in.

Developers can be notified if a change has broken something and test analysts can find bugs before software releases are formally shipped.

Software release management best practices

Environments.

The first thing in software release management best practices is to decide on the environment architecture you want to adopt.  

Deployment architectures can vary. A common 4 tier architecture is DEV, TEST, STAGING, and PROD.  Or to give them their full names, development ,  system   testing ,  staging , and  production .

Your software products should transition in order from DEV through to PROD.  You may wish to add a User Acceptance Testing environment that sits between STAGE and PROD.  

Doing so lets the client validate the release post system test by your team and allows you to release software only after the client has deeded it “production ready” status.

  • Development

The development environment (dev) is the environment in which changes to software are developed, most simply an individual developer’s workstation.

The enviroenment for software development process differs from the ultimate target environment in various ways – the target may not be a desktop computer (it may be a smartphone, embedded system, headless machine in a data centre, etc.).

Even if otherwise similar, the developer’s environment will include development tools like a compiler, integrated development environment, different or additional versions of libraries and support software, etc., which are not present in a user’s environment.

System Test

The purpose of the test environment is to allow either automated tests or human testers to exercise the new and changed code. After the developer accepts the new code and configurations through unit testing in the development environment, the items are moved to one or more test environments.

Upon test failure, the test environment can remove the faulty code from the test platforms, contact the responsible developer, and provide detailed test and result logs. If all tests pass, the test environment or a continuous integration framework controlling the tests can automatically promote the code to the next deployment environment.

Staging is an environment for final testing immediately prior to deploying to production. It seeks to mirror the actual production environment as closely as possible and may connect to other production services and data, such as databases.

For example, servers will be run on remote machines, rather than locally (as on a developer’s workstation during dev, or on a single test machine during the test), which tests the effect of networking on the system.

The primary use of a staging environment is to test all installation/configuration/migration scripts and procedures before they are applied to the production environment. This ensures that all major and minor upgrades to the production environment will be completed reliably without errors, in minimum time.

The production environment is also known as live, particularly for servers, as it is the environment that users directly interact with.  Deploying to production is the most sensitive step; it may be done by deploying new code directly (overwriting old code, so only one copy is present at a time), or by deploying a configuration change.

This can take various forms: deploying a parallel installation of a new version of code, and switching between them with a configuration change; deploying a new version of code with the old behavior and a feature flag, and switching to the new behavior with a configuration change that performs a flag flip; or by deploying separate servers (one running the old code, one the new) and redirecting traffic from old to new with a configuration change at the traffic routing level.

These, in turn, may be done all at once or gradually, in phases.

Coding Standards as software release management best practices

Now that you understand the key environments that you should configure to support release management it‘s time to turn your attention to the code itself.  Coding standards and conventions serve several purposes:

  • They help create a consistent “look” to code thereby allowing developers to focus on the content and not the layout.
  • They allow developers to understand the source code more quickly as assumptions can be made based on previous experience.  For example, in a service-oriented application, you‘d have stored procedures, data access layers, logic layers and a service layer – all passing distinct objects such as DTOs and Data Contracts.
  • Promotes code reuse and maintenance.

Code Layout

Ensuring your code is neatly formatted makes it easier to read.  From a developer‘s perspective, there‘s nothing worse than being assigned a defect, “lifting the hood” on the code to find out you‘re looking at a brownfield mess.  

What follows are some pointers that will ensure your code is nearly formatted and standardized in terms of look and feel.

  • Use the default Code Editor settings (four-character indents for tabs etc).
  • Only one statement per line.
  • Only one declaration per line.
  • At least one blank line between method definitions and property definitions.
  • Use parentheses to make clauses in an expression obvious.  For example, in calculations like this:

Some argue that your code shouldn‘t need comments, I disagree.  A few choice words or XML comments can give new developers an overview of what the underlying class or method is trying to achieve.

The only things to be mindful of are:

  • Comments should be placed on a separate line, not at the end of a line of code.
  • If you have too many comments, your code is too complex.  Refactor your code.
  • Create get only properties if said property is not be changed by the caller.
  • Provide reasonable names for all properties.
  • Provide default values for properties.
  • Don‘t throw Exceptions from property getters.

Class Names

  • Use a noun or noun phrase to name a class.
  • Use Pascal case.
  • Use abbreviations sparingly.
  • Do not use a type prefix, such as C for class, on a class name. For example, use the class name FTPStream rather than CFTPStream.
  • Do not use the underscore character (_).

Method Names

  • Use Pascal case
  • Provide descriptive names, think about what it‘s wider purpose is
  • Use verbs or verb phrases
  • Reveal the intent of the implementation, e.g.  SendJSONData  should be renamed to  PostTweet

Source Control

You can‘t have an effective release management strategy without implementing a source control product.  How else are you going to easily maintain numerous iterations of your product, implement features, maintain previous releases and merge code between concurrent development streams?

There are many source control products to choose from such as Visual Studio Team Services and Git.

File Management

Source control allows you to manage the workflow of code files as they pass from one developer to another.  Depending on your preferences, source control products allow you to define both shared and exclusive file access to code files.

If, for example, you configure your source control product to enable “exclusive access”, then only one developer can work on that file at a time.

Historical Archive

As developers check code in and out of the source control product, the data store builds an archive and snapshot of each file with an accompanying changeset id (assuming Visual Studio Team Services or TFS for the time being).

If required, it‘s easy enough to restore any version-controlled file from this archive should you need to undo any breaking changes.

Source control products often allow you to automate repetitive tasks by giving you the option of executing a command from a batch file such as running a database script.

Depending on the number of developers and size of your software project, introducing a branching strategy can help accelerate the build process and make maintenance tasks and feature development easier to manage.

The Branching mechanism allows developers or teams to work in isolation from the “main source code branch” and there are many strategies you can adopt.

A deep dive into branch planning is beyond the scope of this blog post but if you‘re considering it, it‘s important to consider the following:

  • How big is the team?
  • How often do you need to ship the product?
  • How stable does the build need to be?

It‘s important to only branch when you need to as branching introduces additional tasks such as source repository maintenance and merging tasks.  

If you‘re the only developer in your team, it‘s unlikely you‘ll need to implement a branching strategy, that said, you might decide to maintain one branch for hotfixes and another for features.

Some common branching scenarios and their definitions:

  • Release – Branch to stabilize code you want to release. You can branch before release, avoiding the need to lock down the main branch.
  • Maintenance – Branch to maintain a previously released build.
  • Feature – Branch to isolate feature development that might make the rest of the project unstable.
  • Team – Branch to isolate sub-teams so that they can work without being subject to breaking changes, or that they can work towards unique milestones. These are very like feature branches.

Continuous Integration

Once you have your application code safely stored in your source control provider, another important element of in release management is continuous integration (CI). 

CI is the automated process of integrating code changes and merging all developer code in the source control repository. It provides near-instant feedback as to the integrity of the build and gives development and quality assurance teams confidence in the current build.

Regular Check-ins

Developers should strive to check in code daily, no code should be left checked out overnight – it may break the build!

Cloud platforms such as Windows Azure allow you to configure workflows which integrate with source control products like BitBucket, GitHub and Visual Studio Team Services.  Azure will then pull the most recent updates from your project once committed to any of these source control providers.

Your CI strategy should be self-testing.  Developers should write unit tests that automatically get invoked during an automated build.

Database updates naturally have to be synchronized with code deployments and deployed at the same time.  These can be hard to maintain.

Rollback scripts should be considered if a build/release initiated by the CI platform fails, otherwise you could invalidate the integrity of the database schema or data itself.

Promoting through Release Paths and Change Management

This deserves a series of blog posts but let us cover the basics.  With the environments mentioned earlier (DEV, SYSTEM TEST, STAGING, and PROD) in mind, your software should only transition through each of the environments when “signed off” by the respective function such as development or system test.

As a team, you need to decide on a workflow that best suits your project.  At a high-level, a typical set of release management processes include:

Each function will naturally have its own set internal checkpoints. Your developers will manually test code. They can also supplement this with automated unit tests that can be run on demand. Test Analysts will execute test plans and may also write automated test plans using products such as Selenium . 

Processes within each function serve to act as a checkpoint prior to transitioning your software from one environment to the next. Ignore this phased approach at your peril!

Test Automation 

Test Automation and Continuous Integration go hand in hand when it comes to software release management best practices. Always strive to automate as many unit tests as possible. If your team find themselves routinely testing a suite of use cases then automate these.  

Yes, it may take some time to initially setup your project to adopt TDD approach but the benefits outweigh this initial overhead.

By automating unit tests, you can test an entire application with just a few clicks and get almost instant feedback thereby allowing you to pinpoint code failures in your application.

From a developer‘s perspective, automated unit tests save you from waiting until the product has been promoted to a system test environment for QA analysts. They also serve to prevent your product from regressing when change requests are implemented. 

If you‘re working on a legacy or “brownfield” application that doesn‘t contain any automated unit tests, tackle the high traffic risk areas first.  Don‘t worry about having 100% test coverage initially, otherwise, the task may get too overwhelming.

After your product has passed all developer and system tests (and UAT if you have that environment too), you need to release to production. If this development has been done in a separate branch out-with the root/master branch, then these changes must be merged back into the root.

Most popular source control tools will prompt you to resolve any conflicts in a difference review window, this lets you amalgamate code from all developers.  You need to take care during this exercise as it‘s this new merged version that will be promoted into your production environment.

  • Only merge the code from the development branch to the master branch when you want to deploy, don‘t try to merge anything in advance otherwise, you‘ll give yourself unnecessary work.
  • Schedule major releases to production on scheduled date/time which everyone is aware of, with the aid of analytics tools, you can establish which time of the day is best.  You‘ll want to pick a time when there aren‘t many active users.
  • If you can, present a “down for maintenance page” for the user community.
  • Ensure you have key personnel around for a few hours post-upgrade should you need to apply a hotfix.

Release Notes

  • Use your source control provider to generate release notes that contain all new features and share with the team and user community
  • Circulate documentation or implementation guides across each function (test/devops, etc.) that lets them know exactly what needs to be deployed and how.
  • Delete any additional branches after you have completed your merge to keep the source control repository clean.
  • After the deployment is complete, perform key smoke tests to check everything is working as expected in the production environment.
  • As a rule of thumb, don‘t perform upgrades on a Monday or Friday!

Tracking Issues as software release management best practices

With your software now out in the wild its over to the users, and you can be assured that users will use your product in ways you never anticipated.  They will no doubt raise issues or defects and you need to manage them accordingly.

There are many tools that can help you do this such as  JIRA  and  Visual Studio Team Services  (VSTS) that make it easy to handle defects.

For example, with VSTS, you can raise defects on your Kanban Board against the original User Story or Product Feature.  This makes it easier for your team to track the original change requests and lets them identify any code changes and respective test scripts that were written and executed.

When you have defects in your issue tracking software, you can push them through your release management process and the release management cycle starts all over again!

Evernote  is normally thought of as just note-taking software, but it does provide the option to create a presentation you can share online or with an audience. In that regard, it's a little more limited than the other options in not being dedicated presentation software. However, as an easy and handy way to pull together a presentation quickly, it could serve as a backup or last-minute option, especially if Evernote is already being commonly used by you.

LibreOffice Impress  is part of the open-source suite offered as a free alternative to Microsoft Office, and comes with a powerful array of tools and editing options for your presentation, not least working with 3D images. It's supported by a large community, so it's easy to find an array of additional templates. If there is a limitation it's that it's software you download and install rather than web-based, but any presentations created should be easily portable to the web if needed.

Adobe Spark  does things a bit differently, as rather than just use images it's geared toward video as well. This makes for potentially more powerful multimedia presentations, especially as Adobe also has a big selection of photos and images available for its users. There is a free tier for core features but requires a subscription for custom branding, personalized themes, and support.

Slides  comes with a lot of features in an easy-to-use interface, and involves setting up presentations using drag and drop into an existing grid. It's also internet-based so there's no software to download, and it only requires a browser to use and access.

The ability to customize a presentation to the smallest details. This varies depending on the number of advanced features in the platform, like the ability to set different transitions to each slide, the ability to add customized elements or to design/code the final outcome of the slides to the last font size and color code.

Keynote is basically an improved PowerPoint, it offers the same approach to creating slides, but offers nice and clean customizable templates, a simple interface and great details like smart guides.

The biggest issue with Keynote is the long learning process that it requires. Similar to Microsoft's tool, you'll need to sit down for a few hours to learn to use the platform, and another larger set of hours to make a professional presentation.

Visme is a web based platform for building presentations. Their familiar interface is similar to PowerPoint, but they have successfully simplified a complex UI to a nicer and more understandable navigation. 5- FLOWVELLA

Flowvella is available on the Mac App Store as a desktop application. It provides a simple interface (certainly cleaner than Microsoft PowerPoint and somewhat similar to Apple Keynote) and some very nice design templates, which set good grounds so you can start building a nice looking set of slides on top of them. This is by far their biggest strength! If you want to start from scratch, however, you might feel a little lost creating something that looks good.

We found, however, that the oversimplified interface makes some basic options hard to find, like changing the color of a shape. Also, while running as a desktop app it still requires an Internet connection to download some elements, which can lead to a slower performance than a 100% desktop tool.

Update: We also read recently that they launched a tvOS app for the new AppleTV, making them, as far as we know, the first presentation tool to leverage the new platform.

The premise of Canva is an ‘amazingly easy graphic design software'. It lets you create anything from print design to banners and presentations. They provide an easy to use interface with a huge selection of pre-built designs that you can modify to your liking.

These pre-built elements let you quickly draft a nice presentation even if you have no design skills, but it does require you to drag and drop and arrange the content of your slide, which can become time consuming.

8- HAIKU DECK

'Slides' is a nice website that lets you create and share presentations online. Formerly slides(dot)io and slid(dot)es, they finally settled for slides(dot)com. This startup was founded by Hakim El Hattab and Owen Bossola in Stockholm, Sweden, and it makes use of the reveal.js framework that we mentioned above.

Slides has a nice web interface that encourages you to create a nice and clean presentations, however, it still depends on the user’s ability to manipulate the elements and arrange them in a nice style. Still, their pre-defined formats and their grid system help guide you to a better result.

On April 20, 1987, the first version of PowerPoint was released. Because we love the software so much (and we know many of you readers do, too!), we wanted to celebrate PowerPoint’s 33rd birthday with a whole article dedicated to its origins, history, and use cases! 95% of presentations are created with PowerPoint, 30 Million PowerPoint presentations are given everyday, and 500 million people all over the world are using the software. So without further ado, let’s dive into the success story of PowerPoint - with the early beginnings and the development throughout the different versions (except for version 13, which was skipped due to triskaidekaphobia concerns ).

Timeline & Version History

5. july 1984: the idea was created.

Robert Gaskins was hired by Forethought Inc. as vice president of product development. His task was to create a new software for graphical personal computers like Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh. Already 1 month later, Gaskins came up with the idea of PowerPoint. Back then, the project description was labeled as "Presentation Graphics for Overhead Projection". For the next year they continued to work on the first specification of the software.

November 1984: Start of development

Development officially started under the name "Presenter". However, they started to work on the Macintosh version first. The first developer besides Gaskin was Thomas Rudkin, who joined after 6 months.

January 1987: Funding by Apple

To continue development, the team needed more money. Apple's Strategic Investment Group selected the company for its first investment. One month later, when they announced the software at the Personal Computer Forum in Phoenix, famous Apple CEO John Skully reportedly said "We see desktop presentation as potentially a bigger market for Apple than desktop publishing".

21. January 1987: The name PowerPoint was established

Originally, they chose to keep the name "Presenter" for the final software. However, to everyone's surprise, when they tried to register the trademark, their lawyers replied that the name was already used by another software product. The team had to find a new name quickly and thought about "SlideMaker" and "OverheadMaker". According to Gaskins, one night he came up with "Power point" randomly under the shower. Initially, nobody liked it, but when his colleague Glenn Hobin independently had the same idea (he saw a sign on an airport reading "POWER POINT"), they took it for an omen and stuck with the name. The reason why the name now is a single word with an upper-case P is that back then it was required in the naming of all Macintosh software applications. The common belief that PowerPoint got its name because it "empowers" people is therefore wrong.

20. April 1987: PowerPoint 1.0 (Macintosh)

The first 10.000 copies of the first version of PowerPoint for Macintosh shipped from manufacturing by Forethought Inc. The release was received quite well by the media, commenting it "People will buy a Macintosh just to get access to this product."

July 1987: Acquisition by Microsoft

In early 1987 Microsoft started an internal project to develop a software to "create presentations". Shortly after, they heard that a company called Forethought had nearly finished such a software. The successful release of PowerPoint 1.0 convinced Microsoft to buy the company entirely.

May 1988: PowerPoint 2.0 (Macintosh)

One year later, the second version of the software was introduces. It included color, more word processing features, find and replace, spell checking, color schemes for presentations, guide to color selection, ability to change color scheme retrospectively, shaded coloring for fills.

May 1990: First Windows version of PowerPoint

Almost 3 years later, the presentation software was finally released for Windows PCs. It was announced at the same time as Windows 3.0 and was using the same version number as the current Macintosh variant (2.0).

May & September 1990: PowerPoint 3.0

It was the first application designed exclusively for the new Windows 3.1 platform. New features were: full support for TrueType fonts (new in Windows 3.1), presentation templates, editing in outline view, new drawing, including freeform tool, flip, rotate, scale, align, and transforming imported pictures into their drawing primitives to make them editable, transitions between slides in slide show, incorporating sound and video.

February & October 1994: PowerPoint 4.0

The new version included among others: Word tables, rehearsal mode, hidden slides. Moreover, Microsoft first introduced a standard "Microsoft Office" look and feel (shared with Word and Excel), with status bar, toolbars and tooltips.

July 1995: PowerPoint 95 (new version naming)

To align PowerPoint with all other Office applications, Microsoft decided to skip versions 5 and 6 and instead call it PowerPoint 95.

October 2003: PowerPoint 2003

The 2003 version was the first to include the now called "Presenter View": tools visible to presenter during slide show (notes, thumbnails, time clock, re-order and edit slides). Furthermore, it included an option to "Package for CD" to write presentation and viewer app to a CD.

January 2007: PowerPoint 2007

It brought a new user interface (a changeable "ribbon" of tools across the top to replace menus and toolbars), SmartArt graphics, many graphical improvements in text and drawing, improved "Presenter View" and widescreen slide formats. Another major change was the transition from a binary file format, used from 1997 to 2003, to a new XML file format.

June 2010: PowerPoint 2010

This release added: sections within presentations, a reading view, save as video, insert video from web, embedding video and audio as well as enhanced editing for video and for pictures.

October 2012: PowerPoint for Web was released

The first time ever, the presentation software could be used in your web browser without any installation.

January 2013: PowerPoint 2013

Changes: online collaboration by multiple authors, user interface redesigned for multi-touch screens, improved audio, video, animations, and transitions, further changes to Presenter View. Clipart collections (and insertion tool) were removed, but were available online.

July 2013: First PowerPoint app for Android & iPhone

Finally the famous presentation software came on your mobile device with the first versions for Android and iOS. Giving presentations but as well basic editing of slides was already supported on the small screens. However, there wasn’t an iPad optimized version just yet.

September 2015: PowerPoint 2016

New things in 2019: Morph transition, easily remove image backgrounds, inserting 3D models and SVG icons and a handy Zoom feature.

LAS VEGAS, March 07, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- HP Amplify — NVIDIA and HP Inc. today announced that NVIDIA CUDA-X ™ data processing libraries will be integrated with HP AI workstation solutions to turbocharge the data preparation and processing work that forms the foundation of generative AI development.

Built on the NVIDIA CUDA ® compute platform, CUDA-X libraries speed data processing for a broad range of data types, including tables, text, images and video. They include the NVIDIA RAPIDS™ cuDF library, which accelerates the work of the nearly 10 million data scientists using pandas software by up to 110x using an NVIDIA RTX™ 6000 Ada Generation GPU instead of a CPU-only system, without requiring any code changes.

RAPIDS cuDF and other NVIDIA software will be available as part of Z by HP AI Studio on HP AI workstations to provide a full-stack development solution that speeds data science workflows.

NVIDIA CUDA-X Speeds Data Science on HP Workstation Solutions Pandas provides a powerful data structure, called DataFrames, which lets developers easily manipulate, clean and analyze tabular data.

The NVIDIA RAPIDS cuDF library accelerates pandas so that it can run on GPUs with zero code changes, rather than relying on CPUs, which can slow workloads as data size grows. RAPIDS cuDF is compatible with third-party libraries and unifies GPU and CPU workflows so data scientists can develop, test and run models in production seamlessly.

As datasets continue to grow, RTX 6000 Ada Generation GPUs provide 48GB of memory per GPU to process large data science and AI workloads on Z by HP workstations. With up to four RTX 6000 GPUs, the HP Z8 Fury is one of the world’s most powerful workstations for AI creation. The close collaboration between HP and NVIDIA allows data scientists to streamline development by working on local systems to process even large generative AI workloads.
