God has created such a beautiful world. Every element in it contributes at every stage to enhance its charm. Moreover, it is the diversity that fascinates each of us.

How wonderful it would be like to live the life of some other creature, experiencing something you have never before. Not only our body would change, but also our thoughts would change too. I wish I were a butterfly to experience these changes.

Life as a butterfly

I shall carry their pollen and spread them all over the world. With those magnificent wings of mine I would travel the whole world and make many friends on my way. How great it would be to roam down the clear sky, as well as make way to the rainbow.

Not only shall I bring smile to the faces of children that would enjoy my flight, but also I would hide myself amongst the flowers if they try to catch me and sit on their noses when they feel exhausted. The thought of children forces me to look into my childhood.

About childhood

I would have been born just like an ordinary creepy caterpillar. I would have been judged by people for damaging plants and vegetation. Furthermore, they would have seen me as a notorious and useless being. To end that worthless life I would have cover myself in a cocoon.

Being isolated from world, I would have searched reasons to die, but instead of ending my life so early I may have found reasons to live. Once, I found my worth in this world transformation would have occurred. With a bright morning I would have transformed from an ugly looking creature to a flawless butterfly with grateful movements.

Comparison with humans

Now the world who doesn’t seem to like me would suddenly rejoice in delight. Moreover, they won’t expect much from me and would love the way I am. What’s more, if I compare myself to them? I shall have nothing to worry. My life would be full of adventures every day.

I shall be free from stresses and burdens of society. Furthermore, there would be no need for me to acquire education or even building any house. Likewise, money would have no value for me. I shall live my life the way I wanted, independent of the prospective of others.

After being a butterfly I would live a small but meaningful life. There is so much to have in this world. Every little event has some fun element hidden in it.

Not only humans but other creatures have their own way of living. Everyone has their own meaning of happiness and freedom. One’s happiness should not be at the cost of others’.

Anatomy and parts.

The butterfly’s anatomy as an insect consists of three main body parts: the head, thorax, and abdomen. That being said, their wings and antennae are also included as their body’s main parts.
Adult butterflies have antennae, which are sensory appendages attached to the head. Their antennae function for butterflies to detect smell and balance. Butterflies have two antennae that end in small round balls.
A pair of palps and proboscis are also located on the head, which serves as the feeding and sensory center. Furthermore, a pair of antennae and a pair of a butterfly’s compound eyes are made up of thousands of ommatidia, which each allows them to sense light and images.
The thorax is made up of only three jointed segments: the prothorax, mesothorax, and metathorax, which all descend from a primitive segment.
There are two jointed legs in each section of the thorax. The thorax also has two wings, one pair of forewings and one pair of hindwings.
Butterfly wings are made of hardened membrane, which is reinforced by veins and covered in tiny scales. Each scale is only one color. Butterfly wings have intricate designs created by thousands of scales organized in intricate patterns and interlocking one another like shingles on a roof.
The abdomen is made up of 10–11 segments that taper to the end. Each segment has membranes in between that allow articulation and movement. The external genitalia are located at the end of the abdomen.
The butterfly’s history can be traced back to the mid-Eocene epoch, approximately 40 to 50 million years ago. The evolution of butterflies and caterpillars is inextricably linked to that of flowering plants because they both feed on them.
Butterflies, which most likely evolved from moths, account for approximately 45,000 of the 220,000 Lepidoptera species.
Butterflies are found all over the world, with the exception of Antarctica, and are especially abundant in the tropics; they are divided into eight different families.
Some scientists believe butterflies evolved during the Cretaceous period which was often referred to as “The Age of Flowering Plants”, when continents were arranged differently and climates were very different. That was the peak of angiosperm radiation.
For how the major lineages of butterflies became distributed around the world, researchers who accept a Cretaceous age favor vicariant zoogeographic hypotheses , whereas those who accept a Tertiary age rely on dispersalist hypotheses .

KINDS OF BUTTERFLIES

Listed below are some of the most common and notable butterflies today:
Swallowtail Butterfly – Their name is derived from their distinct tail-like extensions that emerge from their hind wings. However, some of these species do not have tails. The male and female wingspan of these butterflies range from 8 to 90 mm.
These butterflies come in a wide range of colors and patterns, which include red, yellow, as well as orange, on green, black, or even blue backgrounds.
Brush-footed butterfly – These butterflies are also known as “four-footed butterflies” at times. This other common name is driven by the fact that these butterflies have only four functional walking legs. Most species’ wingspan ranges from 35 to 90 mm, or 1.5 to 3.5 inches.
The brush-footed butterflies’ wings are typically brown, yellow, and white, with various colored patterns on their undersurfaces, which are typically duller in color.
American Snout Butterfly – The American snout butterfly, also known as the common snout butterfly, belongs to the Libytheinae subfamily of the Nymphalidae family. They are mostly found in South and North America, and their name is derived mainly from their extremely long and intricate snouts.
Red Admiral Butterfly – This is a large and strong-flying butterfly that is typically found in gardens and parks. These are very different and distinct kinds of butterflies that originated primarily in Ireland and Britain.
Their male to female wingspan ranges from 67 to 72 mm. These butterflies are normally found in warmer climates, but they prefer to migrate north during the spring and autumn seasons.
Monarch Butterfly – The Monarch butterfly is the most beautiful and is also known as the king of all butterflies.
Their magnificent orange, black, and white markings, which include vibrant orange wings with black veins, white dots, and black borders, make them easy to identify.
The term “monarch” originated as a form of homage to King William III of England, who was also given the title “Prince of Orange.”
Karner Blue Butterfly – These are small and delicate kinds of butterflies that are considered an endangered subspecies of the small blue butterfly.
They were once common along the northern edge of the blue lupine range, which stretches from southern Maine to eastern Minnesota.
Blue Morpho Butterfly – The Blue Morpho butterfly’s wings are a magnificent vibrant blue with jet black edges, as the name suggests.
This species, like many others, is among the world’s largest butterflies, owing to the size of their wingspan, which ranges from 5-8 inches.
American Painted Lady Butterfly – This butterfly, also known as the American lady, can be found throughout North America .
Whereas these species are widely known for their stunning appearance, naturalists are most interested in them due to the unique nests made by their caterpillars, which are unique to this species only.

BUTTERFLY BEHAVIORS

Butterflies bask in the sun because they are ectotherms, which means they get their heat from outside sources.
Before they can fly, they must spend time in the sun with their wings spread in the morning and throughout the cooler days, raising their body temperature to around 85 degrees.
A male and female butterfly mate by clasping the ends of their abdomens together and remaining that way for up to 12 hours to ensure that no competitor fertilizes “his” eggs.
A butterfly develops through a process called metamorphosis. This is derived from a Greek word meaning transformation or change in shape.
Eggs are laid on plants by the adult females. These plants will then become the food for the hatching caterpillars which will grow up to 2 inches before hatching.
When the caterpillar stops eating, it becomes a pupa. The pupa is also called a chrysalis – which is suspended under a branch, hidden in leaves or buried underground. All the parts of a butterfly develops inside before hatching as an adult.
The nectar of most butterfly species comes from flowers, however some butterflies prefer fruit juices, tree sap, and even dung or carrion.
They eat using their proboscis, which curls up when not in use, regardless of the source. Butterflies dip their proboscis into the liquid and draw it up into their bodies.
Butterflies do not sleep, but they do rest with their wings closed. The undersides of their wings are patterned to provide excellent camouflage, which allows them to land and appear to vanish from view, a fairly close way to avoid predators.

VULNERABILITY AND CONSERVATION

Butterflies are threatened by a variety of factors, which include habitat loss, climate change , disease, pesticides, and invasive plants. More localized threats, such as overgrazing and roadside mowing, can also be detrimental.
Furthermore, the majority of butterflies on the verge of extinction are rare endemic species with a limited geographic range or very specific habitat specifications.
There are several ways to prevent the declining population of the butterflies and this includes supporting organizations that aim to protect the butterflies as well as providing advice to landowners and managers on how to conserve and restore habitats.
Furthermore, in order to help in the conservation of the butterflies, farmers must avoid the use of pesticides.
Joining the fight to stop climate change could also help because seasonal temperature changes cause changes in the weather cycle, which causes disruption to the butterfly’s entire flight cycle.
By doing so, this could help in terms of the butterflies’ food, habitat, and even migrations .

Butterflies are the most beautiful insects. Their patterns, colours and diligence provide artistic ideas to designers. Butterfly images are widely used in art and jewellery, media artworks and furnishings. Butterflies fly from one flower to another. But some butterflies go a lot further. They like to spend winter in warm places so they fly south when the weather is cold. In spring, they come home. They are also a great helper to gather pollen. When they come into contact with flowers, pollen sticks to their bodies. They then transfer the pollen to the flowers’ pistils, resulting in pollination. There are about 17,500 species of this beautiful creature around the globe.

Butterflies are valuable in three ways for humans. Firstly they are helpful to pollinate plants. They carry pollen from one plant to another to make seeds and new plants. Secondly, they are effective for just being around us. They help people by just being so pretty to provide colours around us. Most importantly they remind us of our Creator who made such a beautiful world. Their wonderful designs point to the wisdom of God.

Butterflies and moths are related to the groups of insects called Lepidoptera. There are some differences between them as butterflies are day-flying insects and you may find moths in night mostly. Also, butterflies are bright coloured insects with long clubbed antennae while moths are not very bright in colours and lack clubs at the end of antennae. Simply you can say that butterflies are fancy moths.

All about Butterflies explores the life cycle of a butterfly and why it is so unique in the world of insects. Students will learn a little bit about each stage. They will also learn related vocabulary, including larva and pupa.

The “Options for Lesson” section contains a few extra ideas for activities you could add to the lesson. One suggestion is to assign students a butterfly species to research and present to the class. Another idea is to get butterfly kits and raise butterflies in the classroom. Students can release them outside once they emerge from their pupae!

Lesson Objectives and Overview: All about Butterflies teaches students all about the stages of a butterfly’s life cycle. Students will learn some vocabulary that relates to the subject matter and discover the different parts of a butterfly. This lesson is for students in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the yellow box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and the number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. For this lesson, you will need to provide scissors, colored pencils or markers, glue, and construction paper.

Options for Lesson

You will find several suggestions in the “Options for Lesson” section of the classroom procedure page that you can consider using as well. One suggestion is to allow students to work in pairs for the activity, but still ensure each students presents their own display. Another suggestion is to assign students a specific species of butterfly to research and present to the class. You can specify the type of presentations students must prepare, or you can provide them with some freedom to choose. Another option is to purchase commercial butterfly kits and allow students to raise and release them. One other option, depending on the season, is to take the students outside and locate and observe the butterflies.

Teacher Notes

Introduction to butterflies.

There are two pages of content in the All about Butterflies lesson plan. The first page provides information about the butterfly and what makes it an insect. Most of these insects are beautiful, with bright and colorful wing patterns. There are nearly 20,000 different species of butterfly throughout the world. Students will discover that they can find butterflies in a wide variety of habitats. A butterfly can live in a forest, the Arctic tundra, or a backyard.

Students will learn that one thing that makes the butterfly incredible is its lifecycle. Butterflies undergo the process of metamorphosis. This is the process by which a caterpillar turns into a butterfly. The caterpillar is one of the stages of the life cycle of a butterfly. Its cells turn into the cells of a butterfly during the process, which is one of nature’s most amazing natural phenomena.

Parts of a Butterfly

Because it is an insect, the butterfly has certain parts that all other insects have. In other words, it has six legs, two antennae, a head, compound eyes, a thorax, and an abdomen. Students will discover that all insects have these traits in common. Butterflies have good eyesight and can sense the air for nectar to feed on. They can find this nectar in fruits and flowers. Adult butterflies have a long, tube-like tongue that sucks up pollen. This means that, like honey bees, they help pollinate flowers. Students might be surprised to learn that a butterfly’s taste buds are on their feet, not their tongue!

Most butterflies fly in a way that is similar to birds. Monarch butterflies actually migrate thousands of miles to lay eggs. When those eggs hatch, the new cycle of butterflies will then travel back to the original location to start a new life cycle. Some of these beautiful insects fly up to 40 miles an hour! Most, however, can only fly between five and 12 miles an hour. These creatures are delicate, so it is important to treat them carefully.

The second content page provides students with a graphic that displays the life cycle of a butterfly. Stage one involves the eggs, which attach to leaves. This stage lasts for up to a couple of weeks, depending on the species. The adult female lays the eggs, which are about the size of a pinhead. Inside the eggs, caterpillars begin to grow. Once they fully develop, the caterpillars hatch from the eggs, beginning the larva stage. Their strong jaws allow them to eat leaves. They can grow up to a couple inches long. This stage only last about 5 to 10 days. Students will discover that some caterpillars shed their skin up to four times during this short period!

The pupa stage is next. In the pupa stage, the caterpillars attach themselves to a branch or underside of a leaf. One last time, they shed their skin and begin the process of metamorphosis. This stage takes up to 10 days before the butterflies are ready to emerge. Stage four, then, is when the full butterflies emerge from the pupa. A butterfly can live anywhere between just a week to a full year, depending on the species. A butterfly’s goal is to lay reproduce and lay eggs. When it does so, the life cycle begins once again.

Here is a list of the vocabulary words students will learn in this lesson plan:

Metamorphosis: the process by which a caterpillar becomes a butterfly
Larva: the second stage of the process of metamorphosis during which the insect resembles a worm or caterpillar
Pupa: the stage at which a caterpillar or larva attaches itself to a branch or leaf to begin metamorphosis

ALL ABOUT BUTTERFLIES LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The All about Butterflies lesson plan contains three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. Each of these worksheets will help students solidify their understanding of the lesson content. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to know when to administer each worksheet to your students.

BUTTERFLY DISPLAY ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

For the activity, students will create a poster that displays the life cycle of a butterfly. They will color each of the four pictures that represent one of the four stages. Next, they will cut out the pictures and glue them, in order, onto a piece of construction paper. Then they will label the stages and write some information about each stage. The title for each display will be the same: The Life Cycle of a Butterfly.

MATCHING PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet includes two sections. The first section contains a list of 16 descriptions and a word bank that contains the four names for each of the life cycle stages. Students must match the information to the correct stage. The second part requires students to name the six parts of every insect and then define metamorphosis .

ALL ABOUT BUTTERFLIES HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

Students will first look at two pictures of butterflies. Using the terms in the word bank, they will draw lines and label the pictures with the correct terms. Next, they will draw lines to match the pictures to the correct life cycle stage they represent.

Worksheet Answer Keys

There are answer keys at the end of the lesson for each of the three worksheets. For the activity, answers will vary when it comes to the extra information students write on their displays. However, the key provides the correct order of the four stages and the correct labels. For the practice worksheet, the answer key provides the correct answers in red. The two short answer questions for the second section may vary from student to student, but their answer should generally match the answer key.

Likewise, there may be some variation in the first section of the homework assignment. The answer keys shows acceptable answers for the labeling of the butterfly pictures. Students’ answers for the bottom section, however, should match those of the answer key. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.

Butterfly Life Cycle

Butterflies are considered to be the prettiest insects and belong to the order Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera is a greek term that defines the “scaly wings” of an insect which is true in the case of butterflies. These scaly patterns that are placed on the wings of butterflies in colourful designs give every butterfly a distinctive look.

Although butterflies fall under the order Lepidoptera, butterflies primarily fall under the superfamily known as Papilionoidea.

Metamorphosis in butterflies is complete metamorphosis because of its distinctive stages: the egg, the larvae (caterpillar), the pupa (Chrysalis) and the adult stage. The insect’s physical features are different in all the stages of metamorphosis.

1) The Egg – Stage 1:

The female butterfly lays the egg on the surface of a leaf or a stem. The egg is tiny, oval or cylindrical and varies in colour. The popular larvae form of a butterfly known as the caterpillar gradually grows inside the egg. These eggs hatch according to the favourable conditions outside, if it’s warm the eggs faster otherwise it takes a few weeks.

2) The Larva (Caterpillar) – Stage 2:

The larvae or in this case a caterpillar that hatches goes on an eating rampage. In this stage, they eat, moult and repeat that process constantly. After hatching the caterpillar is extremely hungry and eats constantly. The caterpillar eats its way out of the egg and then continues to eat plants in the outside world.

3) The Pupa (Chrysalis) – Stage 3:

The caterpillar forms a vessel around it, called the ‘pupa’. Inside the pupa, the caterpillar gradually grows and develops. During this stage, the pupa creates skins around the vessel that makes the exterior hard. The chrysalis protects the pupa till it transforms into a butterfly and breaks out of the vessel.

4) The Adult – Stage 4:

The most prominent stage known to human beings is the adult stage when the Chrysalis breaks out of the vessel with colourful scaly wings. At first, these scaly wings are folded against the body of the butterfly because of its brittle nature. Their body is covered with a layer of tiny sensory hair. And with the help of their leg, they taste. They come in different colours like red, white, green, yellow and sometimes multicolored.

They live on the nectar from flowers. I love catching a butterfly. The final stage of a butterfly’s birth is a cocoon. Moths, a variety of butterfly which is not colourful and becomes active after sunset.

The Three Butterflies

There were three brother butterflies - Neeli, Peeli, and Lali. They were the most beautiful butterflies in the world, as well as best friends. Rangberangi, their mother, had taught them everything they knew. She taught them several things, but the most essential thing she said was: “to remember is that you must always rely on and support one another.”

“Even though you soar on tiny gossamer wings, you will be stronger than the Sun, Wind, and Rain combined. You're simply regular butterflies, weak and vulnerable on your own. As a result, never disappoint one another,” she added.

Neeli, Peeli, and Lali grew up and wanted to travel the globe, as any good fairytale character must. As a result, they ventured forth, encountering wonders they had never imagined were possible. They soared around restlessly, excited and laughing as if there was no tomorrow.

Then they were seen by a cruel, black cloud that was envious of their joy. "Let's see how faithful they are to each other," he chuckled to himself. "I'm going to put them to the test."

He started to pour. Neeli's wings, Peeli's wings, and Lali's wings were all soaked with wet, heavy wings, they soon found it impossible to fly. They shouted out, "We must find some refuge before our wings are harmed."

Red blossoms glistened on a Gulmohar tree. "Please, Gulmohar, let us take refuge among your flowers till the rain cloud passes."

"I can accept Lali, the red butterfly, since my flowers are red," Gulmohar explained. But I'm afraid I won't be able to take the other two."

"If you won't take in my brothers, I won't seek refuge here," Lali remarked fiercely. Peeli and Neeli attempted to persuade Lali to change his mind, but he refused.

Then they came to the Kachnar tree's blue mauve blossoms. The rain began to fall more heavily now, as the dark cloud became irritated that his scheme had failed. "Beautiful Kachnar," the three begged, "please provide us with cover till the rain stops..."

"In my blue blooms, I can protect Neeli," the tree said, "but I can't take in the other two."

"Then I, too, shall not seek refuge here," Neeli said. As the cloud got more enraged, the rain drowned them. "I will never abandon my brothers," said Neeli.

When they arrived at the Amaltas tree, which was dripping with a thousand golden blossoms, the same thing happened. "If you won't help my brothers,” Peeli remarked, "I'll do without your support as well."

They then took off together. When he recognised the brothers' love and dedication, the cloud turned white with humiliation.

Soon after, the Sun shone through, and Neeli, Peeli, and Lali soared off cheerfully, once more exploring the great world.

Everyone wants to be beautiful and attractive and get everyone's attention like a butterfly. I like butterflies very much and today I have come up with an essay on If I were a Butterfly. So let us start with the essay.

If I were a Butterfly.

I and my sister had visited a garden close to our house recently. My sister likes to click photos so she was busy clicking pictures in the garden. The garden was beautiful it was filled with colorful flowers but I was not interested and was getting bored.

When we returned back to our home my sister started showing photos clicked by her in the garden to our family members. She had clicked a photograph of a beautiful butterfly. Looking at the photo everyone was talking about the beauty of that butterfly, at that time a thought came to my mind what if I were a butterfly, and I started to imagine what will happen if I became a butterfly.

When I will become a butterfly I will get so colorful and beautiful wings. Watching the integrated design of mine wings people will always talk about my beauty and appreciate me. Photographers like my sister will always be behind me to take my beautiful and attractive photos.

If I were a butterfly then I would fly from one place to another and there will be no one who will stop me. I will require no permission to go out of the house and the most important thing I will not have to face any traffic problems.

As a student, I have to study so much, after finishing school I have to go to the tuition, and once I return back home I have to finish with both the homework. I don't even get time to play. But if I were a butterfly then there will be no need to study, and there is no question left about school and tuition. And I will able to play for the whole day flying from one flower to another flower.

How great it will be being a butterfly, if we are hungry we can eat whatever we want. I want to sleep we can sleep anywhere without any disturbance. If I were a butterfly than life would be so beautiful isn't it?.
