Naane Varuven movie review: Dhanush owns the screen in Selvaraghavan's best work in recent times

Naane varuven movie review: dhanush and selvaraghavan’s reunion bears fruit in the form of a well-told, even if slightly predictable, supernatural thriller..

Selvaraghavan’s Naane Varuven, which marks his reunion with Dhanush after a decade, works purely because it was under promoted. The fact that the team didn’t even release a trailer actually helped the film leave the desired impact and surprise the audiences to a large extent. This is Selvaraghavan’s best work in recent years and in a refreshing departure from the kind of cinema he’s been making, we get a commendable thriller. The film tries to blend together multiple genres and it succeeds in making that concoction click, despite a slightly predictable second half. Also read: Naane Varuven teaser: Dhanush faces off against himself in intriguing thriller

Naane Varuven movie review: Dhanush brings his usual excellence to this well-made thriller.

The story revolves around twin brothers Prabhu and Kathir (both played by Dhanush). After a series of incidents, Prabhu and Kathir get separated and go on to live separate lives on their own terms. Many years later, Prabhu is happily married and his life revolves around his daughter, Sathya. He rejects the idea of having another child because he doesn’t want the love he has for his daughter to be shared. One day, he begins experiencing some paranormal activities in his house and it affects his daughter. Convinced that she’s possessed, he reaches out to a psychiatrist who is also a spiritual guru. He hires a team of young ghost-busters to help him save his daughter but little does he know that the attempt will actually make him learn who’s behind the possession. The revelation forces him to cross paths with his long-lost twin brother and what follows forms the crux of the story.

The entire first half is terrifically built, and full credit to Selvaraghavan for taking the paranormal route devoid of the tropes usually associated with such stories. There are enough chilling moments in the first half to make someone appreciate why Selvaraghavan is a master storyteller, especially when he’s making stories in his zone.

However, the film feels largely predictable when it reaches the second half and there’s a certain urgency in completing the story without even making one invest in the conflict between the brothers. If only the second half was able to create the same impact as the first, Naane Varuven would’ve worked even more effectively.

As usual, Dhanush owns both the roles and even though as the bad guy Kathir, he gets to play to the gallery; it’s as Prabhu that he is far more believable. In Selvaraghavan’s world, you can find many Kathirs but it’s rare to come across a Prabhu and Dhanush own him so well.

There’s not much scope for other actors as the story is largely based on Dhanush’s dual roles and the child actors who get some meaty parts which they handle maturely. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s score plays a key role in amplifying the mood of the film.

Naane Varuven Movie Review: Dhanush does all the heavy-lifting to elevate this stale horror flick

Director selvaraghavan’s naane varuven, starring dhanush, elli avrram and indhuja ravichandran, is a simplistic psychological horror flick that is bogged down by a sluggish second half. the first half is a total hoot though, says our review..

Listen to Story

Dhanush's Naane Varuven hit the theatres on September 29.

  • Dhanush's Naane Varuven hit the theatres on September 29.
  • The film is directed by Selvaraghavan.
  • Naane Varuven is a psychological horror film.

Director Selvaraghavan and Dhanush’s Naane Varuven is clashing at the box office with Mani Ratnam’s mighty Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 (which is releasing on September 30). Naturally, the latter took the lion’s share of screens across Tamil Nadu, leaving only a chunk for Naane Varuven. In other words, Naane Varuven has a solo release only today, September 29. It was surprising that neither Selvaraghavan nor Dhanush were seen promoting the film, which is taking on Ponniyin Selvan. But, that’s where the surprise lies. As Naane Varuven approaches the interval, you are spellbound by how little you know about the film. You hear screams that ‘Selvaraghavan’ is back. But, friends, I’m sorry, that’s where the good parts end.

Dhanush plays the roles of identical twins, Kathir and Prabhu. While Prabhu is the goody-two-shoes, Kathir is the evil one. He is so evil that his mother, based on an astrologer’s prediction, decides to abandon Kathir at a temple. 20 years later, we see Prabhu leading a happy life with his wife (Indhuja) and daughter Sathya. However, their perfectly happy lives are interrupted by paranormal activities. Sathya is talking to her ‘imaginary friend’ Sonu and soon, she is possessed. What does Sonu want? What is the deal with Prabhu’s twin, Kathir? How are their lives intertwined? Selvaraghavan’s Naane Varuven tries to explore all these in the film.

The biggest justice one can do to Naane Varuven is to know nothing about the film before watching the film. It is when Naane Varuven surprises you the most. Now we know why Dhanush and Selvaraghavan didn’t promote Naane Varuven. As we expect a psychological thriller, Selvaraghavan throws in some spectacular horror elements that spring a surprise. The first half of Naane Varuven has Selvaraghavan written all over it. We see his quirks and trademark elements that are nonchalant and impressive.

But, when the big reveal happens in the second half of Naane Varuven, you can easily be disappointed. It’s as if the halves of the film were written by two different people. The latter half of the film treads a clichéd path and the climax is distastefully done. Naane Varuven enjoys a free fall in the second half and takes the audience with it. There are stale ideas, lousy execution and an illogical ending, which is unintentionally funny.

It is Dhanush (in his two roles) who does all the heavy lifting to save this sinking ship. Dhanush, with his excellent acting, manages to establish the two characters - Prabhu and Kathir - distinctly. Indhuja Ravichandran, as the doting wife, doesn’t have much to explore, rather than just getting jealous of the dad-daughter relationship. Elli AvrRam, in her cameo, delivered a neat performance. Hiya Davey, Pranav and Prabhav have better roles when compared to the female leads and their performances are adequate.

After Dhanush, it is Yuvan Shankar Raja’s brilliant music that elevates a rather muddled script like Naane Varuven. When Dhanush’s Kathir walks in to the ‘Veera Soora’ theme music, you automatically cheer for the bad guy. Cinematographer Om Prakash’s visuals add an eerie feeling that is in sync with the script.

Naane Varuven sees Dhanush exploring the psychological horror genre. Sadly, it is a missed opportunity because of its sluggish second half.

Naane Varuvean Movie Review: Selvaraghavan Makes A Comeback With His Goodluck Charm Dhanush!

Naane Varuvean is a psychological thriller that is the brainchild of Dhanush and his director-brother Selvaraghavan. The duo has united after a gap of 11 years for Naane Varuvean , which has the story and script written by Dhanush himself. All of their earlier films have gained cult status and remained classics of Kollywood.

Naane Varuven

In the movie, Dhanush portrayed a dual role and Selvaraghavan too played an important role of Soomarajan. The movie is awaited by the fans of the duo and it is a surprise that the film had no heavy promotions.

Naane Varuven

Kathir and Prabhu (Dhanush) are twin brothers who are poles apart in behaviour. While Prabhu is a docile and good-natured man, Kathir is a disturbed individual, who comes across as a sociopath.

The story shifts to Chennai after 20 years and it cuts to Prabhu getting married to Bhuvana (Indhuja). They give birth to a daughter, Satya. However, the happiness in the family begins to change when Satya has visions of a person in her dreams. She begins communicating with him.

After visiting a Psychiatrist, Prabhu learns that Satya is being tormented by an imaginary character whom she calls Sonu. Who is Sonu? What is the relation between Sonu and Satya? What happened to Kathir?, is all about Naane Varuvean that you have to find out on the screen.

Performances: Without a doubt, Dhanush has outshone himself as an actor and he has been doing that with each of his consecutive films. He showcased distinction between both the characters he played. The rest of the cast have done the needful and played their characters dutifully. The child actor who performed the character of Satya played her role very well.

Technical Aspects: Without Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score, the film wouldn't be as good as it turned out to be. His music is the heart of the film and Om Prakash's visuals and angles are just brilliant. Naane Varuvean has trademark Selvaraghavan style and is particularly visible in 'Rendu Raaja' song.

What's Good: The film's runtime is crisp and perfect. A slight drag by even ten minutes would have made a lot of difference and the film's editor has to be credited for the same. Performances, technicalities, and direction worked in sync for Naane Varuvean . Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score is exceptional. Om Prakash's cinematography breathed life into the narration.

What's Not So Good:

The movie's second half is not as gripping as its first half. The climax is rather predictable and ends with a regular commercial film formula.

Naane Varuvean is a clean and decent psychological thriller suitable for the family audience. The movie is a great comeback for Selvaraghavan to his core and the brothers' duo created another remarkable film.

Naane Varuven movie review: An underwhelming yet dark and intriguing thriller

Selvaraghavan and Dhanush and back together after a decade and this time, they choose yet another dark theme. With a short runtime and clean screenplay, Naane Varuven’s exploration of psychopath is intriguing.

Naane Varuven movie review: An underwhelming yet dark and intriguing thriller

Language: Tamil

Selvaraghavan and Dhanush have come together after Mayakkam Enna and the brothers in Naane Varuven present a tale of twin siblings. Only, unlike the real-life relationship, the one in their film is filled with danger, trauma, physical and mental abuse. To be honest, films by Selvaraghavan starring Dhanush have always excelled in capturing the dark recesses of a human mind. In Selvaraghavan’s directorial debut Kaadhal Kondein starring Dhanush, they explored the dark side of possessiveness and obsession. In Pudhupettai , the two of them painted the town red by delving deep into the life of a thug. In Mayakkam Enna , the two of them explored the depths of depression. Now, they explore the darkness that could exist in a relationship between siblings.

Research papers suggest that psychopaths show symptoms of their condition as a child. They torture animals and revel in the pain that they cause their pet project. Kathir , in Selvaraghavan -directorial Naane Varuven , is one such psychopath. He lights the skirt of a girl in the neighbourhood on fire and does it purely for cheap thrills. He refuses to apologize for his mistake and holds grudges long enough to exact revenge, and this includes his family members. He stabs his father, locks his twin brother Prabhu in a storage trunk and has no qualms about his actions. Textbook actions of a psychopath really. Unfortunately, his widowed mother decides to abandon him instead of finding a way to treat him, or leave him to the authorities.

What makes Naane Varuven really interesting is how it blends fantasy and science to propel the plot forward. Prabhu grows up into a responsible father, one who continues to be affected by his childhood, but one who doesn’t let his trauma direct his life. There is initially no news from Kathir, on the other hand. It is as if he has disappeared from Prabhu’s life. He only exists in fleeting moments of Prabhu’s flashbacks. Until Prabhu’s daughter returns from a vacation as a changed person. Interestingly enough, the moments in the run-up to this exact moment are light and sweet. It is as if the makers want the audience to get ready for a misfortune to strike Prabhu’s family. The restlessness is apparent, and after Prabhu’s wife mentions how uneasy she had felt in their daughter’s room, the tone of the entire film shifts. It goes from light and vibrant to grey and heavy.

Beyond the mix of fantasy and fiction, however, Naane Varuven is underwhelming at large with some impressive moments interspersed just enough to keep us from getting bored. One of the highlight moments in the film occurs when Kathir, who is settled in Chopta as an adult, shows his true colours to his family. That moment is raw with his family’s fears, his pain at his inability to hide his true self long enough and Kathir’s reminders that he had been abandoned once before. Even as Kathir moves in darkness, their enough light surrounding him to highlight that he had truly become a monster. One that wanted to believe that he deserved a family.

He did not care about imprisoning people in the name of love, and until the very end, he is painted as nothing but a monster. Just as it should be. This also serves as one of the problems in the film. Despite being a psychological thriller, the film moves at a snail pace. Fortunately, the short runtime of 2 hours and 11 minutes, and a clean screenplay ensure that the film doesn’t become too much of a drag.

Overall, Naane Varuven has its moments, and the exploration of Kathir’s character is intriguing As a whole, however, the film needed to be a tad bit more dynamic. Especially the way they arrive at a resolution to the central conflict is just laden with unnecessary weight.

Rating: 3 (out of 5 stars)

With a potent lead in Dhanush, and good child actors, this could’ve been a far more effective film had the writing cared to reveal characters beyond the plot.

'Naane Varuvean' movie review: A delicious setup tapers off

Poster of Selvaraghavan's Naane Varuven

Naane Varuvean begins when you learn that a disturbed young boy has set a young girl’s skirt on fire. Welcome back to my world, Selvaraghavan seems to be saying. Soon, someone else speaks of the pleasures of hunting a human as opposed to an animal. Someone else is said to possess eyes that seem to be radiating something demonic, and the filmmaker captures this sinister stare compellingly.

There’s something wildly enjoyable about seeing Selvaraghavan do things that are so unusual in our cinema, that few filmmakers show the stomach for. In his films, there are moments so dark, so persuasive in craft, that it’s impossible not to feel a primal rush. In Naane Varuvean, I felt a glorious high at interval point. The framing has a grinning girl in the foreground, and a man in the background, who’s frozen in fright. In between, we see the slow-motion walk of another man from behind him. Yuvan’s ritualistic theme track does the rest. It’s also enjoyable that Selvaraghavan returns to something more emotional, more intimate with this film.

I would be remiss, however, not to emphasise the pleasures of the first half. I enjoyed that the filmmaker takes on the overdone horror space and shows that with some tasteful touches, a novel experience can still be created. Among the many impressive visual choices is one vintage Selvaraghavan shot of Prabhu (Dhanush) standing near a locked door, while people around him scamper about in panic. Also, as this film is about a haunted child, it’s important to raise the point that our cinema usually either adultifies children or shows them as hapless victims. The writing of Naane Varuvean establishes the victim, young Sathya (a hugely impressive Hiya Davey), as an individual capable of self-reflection. At one point, she even protests against the condescending gaze of adults around her. I found Sathya to be a really likeable child, and this made the horrors she faces even more frightening.

How far behind can science be in a horror film? In Naane Varuvean, there are some new-age ghost-hunters, and there’s a psychiatrist too (Prabhu), but there’s no real foray into this age-old conundrum between science and religion.

Dhanush is terrific as Sathya’s docile father, Prabhu. Watch him radiate helplessness at being unable to help his daughter. My favourite is a scene on a terrace where one moment, he’s advising her from a position of reassurance and maturity, but then, he hears one frightening word and that cripples him into a state of fear and uncertainty. Dhanush is wonderful in these vulnerable spaces as Prabhu. Rather strangely, it’s the other character—the dynamic Kathir—that doesn’t cause as much impact as you would expect—especially after an explosive reveal. Dhanush laces Kathir with confidence and charm, but the character is simply not shaded with enough detail for us to understand—or be upset by him.

Kathir feels rather hollow, and the film doesn’t quite seem to make up its mind on the why of his violence, on the nature-nurture debate that usually surrounds such criminals. Where you feel sympathy and goodwill for Vinoth (Kaadhal Kondein), and where his violent dance feels like catharsis in a sense, it’s hard to feel anything for Kathir. And so, when you get a similar ritualistic dance and Yuvan jumps in with a haunting score, there’s the uncomfortable realisation that grisly murders might well be getting repurposed as entertainment. You are left rather confused about the objectives of the film, concerning Kathir. Does it aim to offer us morbid satisfaction? Does it aim to showcase a rot in the society? There are no great pleasures in the second half.

Naane Varuvean begins with the introduction of two brothers, and goes on to introduce two more brothers, but never sinks deep into either relationship. The name of one brother is said to strike paralysing fear into the other, and yet, not much gets made of this bond. Duality is a constant theme in this film. I mean, there are two sets of twins. Does it get any more dual than that? This film speaks of good and bad, light and darkness, god and devil… I suppose there’s bitter irony in how the film itself has turned out to be an exercise in duality. The first half is riveting, but…

Director: Selvaraghavan Cast: Dhanush, Hiya Davey, Indhuja Rating: 2.5/5

Naane Varuven review: Twitter heaps praises on this nail-biter starring Dhanush

The past few hours have seen a sea of reviews flood the interwebs. In focus? Supernatural thriller Naane Varuven starring South India’s beloved actor Dhanush. Here’s a quick look at what Twitter had to say after exiting the theaters.

A suspense-thriller following the lives of twin brothers Prabhu and Kathir – played by Dhanush – lit up the big screens across India recently. The story goes that the two get torn apart after a series of events – leading their separate lives on their own terms. Prabhu is content with his married life until he begins witnessing paranormal occurrences around him, which also happen to affect his only daughter. What follows is consultations with a psychiatrist-spiritual guide, a team of ghost-busters, and a tete-a-tete with his long-lost sibling. Directed by Selvaraghavan – of the Aayirathil Oruvan fame – the movie’s score is by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

Naane Varuven reviews on Twitter

The movie is being hailed as one of Selvaraghavan’s finest works. Dhanush’s duality and acting prowess has moviegoers buzzing as well. By and large, Twitter’s been raving about the first half of the film which is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. The second is believed to be a bit slow and predictable but not enough to take away from the movie-watching experience. Here’s a peek at what the chatter around the feature has been about so far.

Naane Varuven is surprisingly good, neatly done- doesn’t under do/ overdo anything. Dhanush is terrrrrrific and yuvan’s score is excellent as usual. Naane Varuven Review: Is Dhanush's psychological thriller worth your time and money? Read this NOW

Naane Varuvean Movie Review: Dhanush will play two characters in the psychological action thriller film. The brothers' fourth project as actor and director together is the film.

Actor Dhanush is back on the big screen after finding success with Thiruchitrambalam. His brother Selvaraghavan is directing his most recent film, Naane Varuvean. The brothers' fourth project as actor and director together is the film. Dhanush will play two characters in the psychological action thriller film.

Naane Varuvean

The anticipation for this psychological thriller, which debuted today, September 29, is insane. Dhanush and Selvaraghavan collaborated on the script for Naane Varuvean, which features both of them. This is a confluence of unexpected events that nobody anticipated.

Dhanush has written a movie twice, most recently for this one. Prior to it, he wrote and directed his first film, Pa. Paandi. Given the subject and the director, Dhanush's writing for the movie creates an odd buzz.

Because Ponniyin Selvan 1 had gotten so much attention, the movie didn't receive as much promotion. Despite not opening on the same day, the historical fiction opens tomorrow. It will be interesting to watch whether this affects Naane Varuvean's box office results.

In an interview, producer Kalaipuli Thanu said "I have watched Naane Varuvean 15 times. I never watch my films this many times." The producer is known for his blockbuster hits such as Kandukondein Kandukondein, Kaakha Kaakha, Thuppaki, Theri, and Asuran among others.

In a recent interview, the producer of Naane Varuvean, Kalaipuli S Thanu, disclosed that the Singapore censor board, which screened the film, referred to Naane Varuvean as "Selvaraghavan's return." Umair Sandhu, a well-known social media user associated with the foreign censor board, has added to this by posting his critique of Naane Varuvean to his tales. It states:

Naane Varuvean has Yuvan Shankar Raja for music and features Indhuja Ravichandran, Elli Avram, among others. The movie meets Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: Part One (PS-I) at the Tamil box office.

While the teaser revealed that both Dhanush characters are family men, how one of them turned into a raging murderer and why does he have the other Dhanush on his radar as well, remains unanswered. With the film passing censors everywhere, the movie's first set of reviews have been revealed and they have both been strongly in favour of the team.
